Annabel Branstad

 

LAKE MILLS — Annabel Branstad, 85, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Jan. 13, 2007) at her home in Lake Mills.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial will take place at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

 

Annabel Branstad was born on May 24, 1921, near Thompson, the daughter of Boal and Helen (Hove) Anderson.

 

On June 2, 1939, she was united marriage to John E. Branstad in the Winnebago Lutheran parsonage. Together they farmed in the area for many years before moving into Lake Mills where she was employed at Fleetguard, now known as Cummins Filtration, where she worked for 27 years until she retired in 1986.

 

John passed away on Nov. 19, 1999.

 

Annabel is survived by her three daughters: Marilyn (Curt) Cornell, of Lake Mills; Janice Branstad of Duluth, Minn.; LeAnn Hagen, of Lake Mills; grandchildren: Gregary (Nancy) Cornell, Angela (Doug) Bacon; Robb (Anne) Napoli-Quisling, Sara (Warren) Brackey, Ryan Quisling, Jeffrey (April) Cornell, and Kevin (Miranda) Cornell; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Jordynn and Josie Brackey; Mitchell Storby; Caleb and Logan Bacon; Edward, Celia and Vincent Napoli-Quisling; Tyler and Lauren Cornell; Tucker Cornell; Alexis Peterson; and Quin Cornell; sisters: twin sister, Thelma Leegaard, of Hoffman, Minn.; Alica Christian, of Foley, Ala.; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Branstad, of Frederic, Wis.

 

Annabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son-in-law, Gary Hagen; three brothers, Albin, Oliver and Earnest Anderson; and two sisters, Hazel Larson and Ora Hofbauer.

Ruth Mergertie Swyter

 

MASON CITY — Ruth Mergertie Swyter, 91, passed away Monday (Jan. 8, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

There will be no visitation as the body was cremated.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2006, at the Britt Christian Reformed Church in Britt, with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating.

 

Ruth, the daughter of Neal and Mirinda Michelsen VanDusseldorp, was born on Sept. 20, 1915, on a farm south of Kanawha. She attended area rural schools.

 

On Jan. 1, 1939, she was united in marriage with Carl Swyter at her parents’ home near Kanawha. The couple farmed on Carl’s home place near Britt in Erin Township, until retiring and moving into Britt in 1978.

 

Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church of Britt. She was a member of the church circle and served on various church committees. She was a long-standing member of the Rebekah Lodge.

 

Ruth enjoyed quilting and doing embroidery work, and made quilts and many embroidery items for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed her flower gardening, reading and keeping up with current events. She also enjoyed keeping in contact with her many relatives.

 

After raising her family, Ruth obtained her GED. She then attended North Iowa Area Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College where she received her LPN nursing degree in March of 1974. In 1976, she received her EMT certification and was a charter member of the West Hancock Volunteer Ambulance Service. She also worked as a nurse’s aide at the West View Care Center.

 

Ruth is survived by three sons, Ross (Sandy) Swyter of Britt, granddaughters, Emily and Hannah; Roger (Beth) Swyter, of Nashua, grandchildren, Michael (Tana) Swyter, and Pam Swyter; and  Robert (Peggy) Swyter, of Hoffman Estates, Ill., grandsons, Robert Jr.,(fiancee Stacy), and William. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl, in 1992; two children. David, in 1943, and Sue Ann, in 1945; and a sister, Mildred Bloxham.

Sarah Adele Johnson

 

BELMOND — Sarah Adele Johnson, 87, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (Jan. 14, 2007) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church west of Belmond, with Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in St. Olaf’s Cemetery.

 

 Sarah Adele, the daughter of Benjamin and Eva Nina (Reese) Fetrow was born on Dec. 12, 1919, in Belmond, Iowa. She graduated from the Belmond High School. She went on to work in clothing stores, Buttrey’s in Mason City, and Stark’s Clothing in Clarion.

 

Adele was united in marriage with Ernest Johnson on July 16, 1950. They lived in town briefly before moving to the family farm.

 

Adele had a natural talent as an artist; she loved to paint. She was also an avid bird watcher. Taking care of her family was her life.

 

Adele was very active in the community, and her church as well. She was a charter member of her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, being a member for 59 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the Kensington Club, and the Ladies Aid at St. Olaf Church.

 

Adele is survived by her sons, George (Barbara) Johnson and Phil (Laurie) Johnson, both of Belmond; grandchildren, Darien Johnson, Brandon (Ariel) Johnson, Tyler Anderson, and Jayme Anderson; great-grandchild, Savanna Shea Johnson; sister, Jean McNulty, of Des Moines; brothers, George (Betty) Fetrow, of Belen, N. M., and Herb (Jean) Fetrow of Owatonna, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Adele is preceded in death by husband, Ernest; parents, Ben and Nina Fetrow; and brother, Robert Fetrow.

ALLISON — Emory Niehaus, 90, of Allison, died Sunday (Jan. 14, 2007) at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. John’s Evanglical Lutheran Church in rural Greene, with the Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Adeline McCormick

 

DECORAH — Adeline McCormick, 89, of Decorah, died on Friday (Jan. 12, 2007) at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, following a long illness.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 16, 2007, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, with The Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary. There will be additional visitation until 10 a.m. today at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home.

 

Adeline Mae (Waller) McCormick was born on Sept. 3, 1917, the daughter of Andrew and Cora (Skillings) Waller in Patch Grove, Wis. She attended country school and lived in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

 

Adeline married Joseph McCormick on Nov. 23, 1936, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon. To this marriage six children were born. Adeline worked in the food service industry for many years. Adeline retired from Luther College in 1992, at the age of 75, with over 30 years of service.

 

Adeline loved to cook, enjoyed playing bingo, dancing and going to the “Boat.”  Adeline also loved her polka music and scratch tickets. Adeline was always known to speak her mind — no matter what! Adeline worked her whole life to make sure her family had what they needed with no regard for her own material needs. Adeline’s life evolved around her family. A special gleam could be seen when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Everyone should be so blessed to know an “Adeline” in their lifetime.

 

Adeline’s survivors include two daughters, Carol (Carsten) Quam, of Decorah, and Joyce (Gary) Gates, of Scottsboro, Ala.; three sons, Donald (Pat) McCormick, of Decorah, Kenneth (Mary) McCormick, of Clear Lake, and Dale (Jule) McCormick, Decorah; one daughter-in-law: Helen McCormick, of Mission, Texas; 17 grandchildren: Mike (Deb) Quam, Theresa (Randy) Stortz, Brenda (Kevin) Hovey, Erin McCormick, Brian McCormick, Lorie (Don) Easter, Jim McCormick, Cheryl Dahl, Jody (Chris) McCormick, Debbie McCormick, Connie (Tracy) Schroeder, Kevin (Marie) McCormick, Scott McCormick, Susie (Dan) Boehnke, Ernie (Nancy) Moen, Larry (Heather) Moen and Nancy (Wayne) Quade; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Waller, of Poynette, Wis., Sister Mary Dorothy McCormick, and Sister Mary Louis McCormick, both of Dubuque.

 

Adeline was preceded in death by her parents: Andrew and Cora Waller; her husband: Joseph McCormick in 1965; son: Jerry McCormick in 1992; two grandsons: Terry McCormick in 1978, and Kyle McCormick in 2003; three sisters: Genevieve LaPointe, Edna Messerli and Ruth Waller; seven brothers: Elmer, Marlow, Frank, Melvin, George, Robert and Arnold Waller in infancy.

Deryl Wayne Underbakke

 

Deryl Wayne Underbakke, son of Bert and Alida Oswald Underbakke, was born on Sept. 3, 1929, in Rake, Iowa.

 

 He was a graduate of Rake High School and attended Luther College at Decorah. He was an Army sergeant and was a veteran of the Korean War.

 

Deryl passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2007) at his home in Hoover, Ala.

 

Left to honor his memory are his sons, John (Marcia) Underbakke, of Stafford Va. and Clark Underbakke of Pelham, Ala; three grandsons, Jacob, Caleb and Lucas, of Virginia; a brother, Dennis (Alyce) Underbakke, of Forest City, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Deryl was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; his parents, one brother and two sisters.

OSAGE — Maurice Gregory Kathan, 79, of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2007) in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., after an extended cancer illness of 17 years.

MULLAN, Idaho — Albert “Al” Tolzman, 66, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2007) at his home in Mullan, Idaho.

 

A celebration of life was held on Jan. 10, 2007, in Mullan, Idaho. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Nora Springs, Iowa.

 

Al was born in San Francisco, Calif., on July 3, 1940. He attended school in Mason City, and served in the United States Army as an MP.

 

His home was in the mountains in Idaho, where he loved to hunt bear, elk, and deer.

 

He is survived by his wife, Brenda, of Mullan, Idaho; and two children, son, John Tolzman, of Nora Springs, Iowa; and a daughter, Tawny (Price) McElroy, of Glendale, Ariz.; two grandsons, Stone and Blade Tolzman, of Mason City, Iowa; his parents, LaVern and Lillian Tolzman, of Havana, Ark.; sisters, Diane (Robert) Neuhring, of Mason City, and Susan (Tom) Berry, of Havana, Ark.; nieces, Lori (Doug) Schmidt, children, Brandon, Jeremy, Steven and Austin, of Nora Springs; Jill (Eugene) Tittsworth, children, Spencer, and Brooke, Van Buren, Ark., Allison (Danny) Hollis, of Fort Smith, Ark., Christie (Jeremy) Rahn, children, Zackary, Ashton, and Page, of Merced, Calif.; Stacey Bosnick and children, Bryeanna, Connor, and Ryan, of Danville, Ark.; nephews, Brad (Lissan) Nuehring, of Mason City, and Brett Tolzman, of Fort Smith, Ark.

MASON CITY — Jack L. Leake, 70, of 302 Second St. N.E. in Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 14 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit in Mason City.

 

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City with the Rev. Charles H. Aurand, officiating.

 

Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where a flag-folding ceremony will be conducted by members of Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

 

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

MASON CITY — Arlyce J. Faille, 68, of 1630 N. Carolina Ave., died Monday (Jan. 15, 2007) at home.

 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Arlyce was born on Feb. 13, 1938, in Sisseton, S.D., to Arthur and Ruby (Harrison) Welch. She attended school in Mason City.

 

On Dec. 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Julian M. Faille in Kankakee, Ill. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, crocheting, sewing, baking and cooking.

 

Arlyce is survived by five children, Steven Faille and wife, Christeen, of Cedar Rapids, Sandra Fett of De Soto, Duane Faille of Mason City, Linda Johnson and husband, Terry, of Snow Mass Village, Colo., and Julie Meier of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Eric, Danielle, Kyle, Brandi, Dionne, Buddy, John, Lindsey and Alex; five great-grandchildren, Sean, Joey, Jayden, Savannah and Brody; one brother, Eugene Welch, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Lois Holmes and husband, Charles, of Mason City; and one half-brother, Charles Jackson Jr. and wife, Barbra, of Rockwell. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Julian in 1982.

CHARLES CITY — Dr. John F. Hitzhusen, 92, died Monday, (Jan. 15, 2007) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St. in Charles City, with Pastor Gayle Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

John Franklin Hitzhusen was born in Cartersville, Iowa, to Ben and Clara (Gaiser) Hitzhusen. He attended and graduated from Rockwell, Mason City Junior College and later the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1940. Dr. Hitzhusen practiced dentistry in Charles City for 56 years, retiring in 1996. He served as a captain in the Army Dental Corps in Iceland. Dr. Hitzhusen had traveled on dental mission trips that had taken him to Mexico and Sierra Leone, West Africa. John’s philosophy in life was “Find a job you love and you will never work another day of your life.”

 

On June 13, 1942, John was united in marriage to Donna Chuick in Princeton, Mo.

 

John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. In addition, his memberships and service included being a charter member of the noon Kiwanis in Charles City, serving on the NIACC Board for 23 years from (1970-1993), the NIACC Foundation from 2001 to 2005, the Floyd County Museum and the Floyd County Fair and livestock auction for many years. John was also a member of both the V.F.W. and American Legion of Charles City.

 

John’s interests and activities included golf and fishing in his younger years, completing home improvement projects for his children, baking and giving away bread and early mornings spent at the YMCA in Charles City.

 

Dr. John is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Linda (Doug) Groesbeck of Charles City and Bill (Vicki) Hitzhusen of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Emily (Jeff) Griswold, Dan Groesbeck, Kate Hitzhusen and Lauren Hitzhusen; and one great-grandson, Ethyn Groesbeck.

 

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Hult and Ann Smith; and four brothers, Henry, George, Leon and Ernest Hitzhusen.

MASON CITY — Jack L. Leake, 70, of 302 Second St. N.E. in Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 14 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit in Mason City.

 

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Charles H. Aurand officiating. Jack Lee Leake was born July 19, 1936, at Mason City, a son of James S. and Helen J. (Meader) Leake. He married Margery Wilson on June 25, 1961.

 

Jack was a 1956 graduate of Mason City High School where he participated in football and wrestling. A 1957 graduate of Army signal school, Jack served in the United States Army from 1956-59 in Korea, where he worked as a photographic lab technician. Following his discharge from the Army, Jack attended the Brooks Institute of Photography at Santa Barbara, Calif., completing its course of study in 1961.

 

Jack worked for White Farm Equipment in Charles City for more than 25 years. Later, he worked at Lewis Systems prior to retirement.

 

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mason City.

 

Survivors include his children, Lori (Eric) Botts of Macomb, Ill., Kathy (Ed) Mahlstedt of Bagley, David (Rebecca) Leake of Nora Springs, Amy Vosburgh of Nora Springs; grandchildren, Meghan, Hayley and Carly Botts, Bryant, Kayla, Andy and Thomas Mahlstedt, Amanda, Marissa and Kara Leake, Chelsea and Hunter Vosburgh; a brother, Harlan (Maureen) Leake, of Mason City; an aunt, Mildred (Charles) McElroy, of Rockford; an uncle, Don Leake, of Mason City; one niece and two nephews.

 

His parents, a son, Mark Lee Leake; and a granddaughter, BriAnna Noel Leake, preceded him in death.

KLEMME — Nadina Kay Sizemore, 37, of Klemme, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 16, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Nadina Kay, the daughter of Randy and Debbie Moore Sizemore, was born Dec. 18, 1969, in Louisville, Ky. She grew up in Henry County, Kentucky, where she attended school. Nadina graduated from the Henry County High School in 1987. After high school, she started working for the State of Kentucky. It was during this time that she met her life’s companion, Nathan Banta.

 

In 1997, Nathan and Dina moved to Klemme. Nadina had been working for the Belmond-Klemme High School as a teacher’s aid for the past four years. Devoted to her family, Nadina’s children were her life. She loved spending time with family and friends.

 

Nadina is survived by Nathan; three daughters, Kelsey, Baylee and Morgan, all at home; her parents, Randy and Debbie Sizemore, of Gratz, Ky.; three brothers, Randy of Gratz, Ky., Scott of Gratz, Ky., and Turner of Louisville, Ky.; father-in-law, Lou Banta and wife, Fran, of Belmond; mother-in-law, Sandy Vestweber and husband, Dennis, of Leland; grandfather-in-law, John Just, of Belmond; grandmother-in-law, Wilhelmine Vestweber, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Rachel Boots and husband, David, of Rowan; brothers-in-law, Tom Banta and wife, Teya, of Garner and Josh Banta and wife, Tasha, of West Des Moines; also surviving Nadina are Traci and Dan Goll, of Garner, Troy and Brook Rasmuson of Belmond, Tom and Dawn Butler of Belmond, Danny Butler of Austin, Texas; as well numerous other relatives and friends.

Bette Delores (Ziesmer) Lovik

Bette passed away in her sleep Monday (Jan. 15, 2007) at Thorne Crest Retirement Center, where she had made her home for the last 18 years.

 

Bette Delores Lovik was born Jan. 7, 1921, to Anna (Herzog) and Edward Ziesmer in Ventura. She graduated from Garner High School. After high school, Bette moved to Lake Mills and worked for a short time at The Graphic Publishing Co. It was in Lake Mills she met and married Dr. Stanley Lovik, DVM. Doc and Bette had four children — Stephen (deceased) and Linda (Bass), Nate, Jackie and Josh Lovik of Iowa City; Shirlee Lovik Kittleman (deceased) and Thomas, Brad and Sara Kittleman of Florida; Tom and Mary (Morris), Julianna and William Lovik of Okemos, Mich.; Rick and Kelly (Shaffer), Ben and Lindsey Lovik of Prior Lake, Minn. Bette is also survived by her sister-in-law, Darlene Ziesmer; a niece, Betty Ann Goll-Muth; and nieces and nephews in Garner.

 

Doc and Betty lived for many years in Lake Mills, where they formed strong bonds with many folks and always had a pot of coffee and some bars ready for unexpected company.

 

Bette was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society and enjoyed playing golf and bridge and in later years frequent games of “Uno” and “Kings in the Corner” with her friends. She was also active in the Literary Club and her Circle at Salem Lutheran Church.

 

Bette’s keen sense of humor, her love for her children and her grandchildren and her strong spirit in spite of her long battle with multiple sclerosis will be cherished and remembered by her family and her friends in Lake Mills, Garner, and at Thorne Crest.

Berdie M. Erickson

 

ADA, Minn — Berdie Erickson, 90, of Ada, Minn., died Tuesday (Jan. 16, 2007) at Bridges Care Community, Ada, Minn.

 

On April 16, 1916, Berdie Mae was born to Orin and Stena (Strand) Galland in Mentor, Minn. She was the sixth of seven children. Berdie was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

 

Berdie graduated from Mentor High School and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in the Twin Cities. It was there that she met E. Raymond Erickson from Clear Lake, Iowa. Ray and Berdie married on Sept. 28, 1940, in Berdie’s hometown of Mentor at Faith Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm near Joice, Iowa. They raised corn, beans, cattle, chickens, pigs, and four rambunctious sons (Philip, Paul, Marcus and Clement).

 

In March 1959, Ray and Berdie and their sons moved to a farm near Ada, Minn. In 1976, they moved to Twin Valley, Minn., and in 1981 they moved to Ada, Minn. In the winter months, Ray and Berdie spent time in Arizona, when they retired.

 

Berdie enjoyed gardening, visiting with friends and family over coffee, Bible studies and traveling. Some of her trips included traveling to Norway, Israel and Egypt.

 

Berdie is survived by three sons, Paul (Bertha) Erickson, Clear Lake, Iowa, Marcus (Marilyn) Erickson, Erskine, Minn., and Clement (Gail) Erickson, Twin Valley, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Erickson, Ada, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother: Wilson (Clara) Galland, Mentor, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; two sons, Samuel and Phillip; one granddaughter, Melissa; one great-grandson, Christopher; two brothers, Chester and Raymond; three sisters, Clara Bouffleur, Viola Grimstad, and Nellie Bergh.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, Minn.

Marcella Halbach

 

STACYVILLE — Marcella Halbach, 86, of Stacyville, died Wednesday (Jan. 17, 2007) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

 

Marcella was born May 2, 1920, at Meyer, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Werner) Gerhartz. She married Fred “Fritz” Halbach on Nov. 26, 1942, at Meyer. They farmed east of Stacyville until retiring and moving to Stacyville in 1980.

 

Marcella was a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and was very active with the Mitchell County Fair Association. She was a member of the Thread Clippers Quilting Club. Marcella was an active member of Visitation Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers in Stacyville.

 

Marcella enjoyed a variety of activities, which included gardening, bowling, golfing, traveling, reading and especially quilting.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Burial will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Visitation Catholic Church, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before services at the church.

Robert J. Fink

 

OSAGE — Memorial services for Robert J. Fink were held Thursday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Osage with Pastor Doug Brown officiating.

 

Robert died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at his home in Brainerd, Minn.

 

Robert was born June 7, 1943, in Osage, the son of Dale and Mildred (Flynn) Fink. He attended Orchard and Nora Springs schools, graduating from Nora Springs in 1961. He was united in marriage to Noreen Newton in 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage and Brainerd.

 

Robert worked at White Farm Equipment (previously Oliver) in Charles City for more than 20 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Osage.

 

Robert loved the lakes and woods and enjoyed wildlife and fishing. His passion was his 1967 Corvette and he enjoyed taking it to car shows.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim.

 

Robert is survived by Noreen Fink of Osage; two sons, Steven Fink of Valley Center, Kan., and his daughters, Alyssa and Kylee, and son, Caleb; and David (Shirley) Fink of Cleveland Tenn., and their four sons, Matthew, Aaron, Andrew and Mason; and a stepgranddaughter, Heather Francel of San Diego, Calif.

Jacinto Barrientes Sr. was born Aug. 15, 1934, in Goliad, Texas, the son of Pablino and Nasaria Garcia Barrientes.

 

Jacinto was always known for his strong work ethic. From the time of his youth until his mid-30s, Jacinto worked as a ranch hand in La Ward, Texas. He was a true-blooded cowboy, breaking horses, roping calves and fulfilling the expected duties of a profession he truly loved. His relatives and friends lovingly nicknamed him “Papa.”

 

On March 30, 1963, in Port Lavaca, Texas, Jacinto was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Ellen Morales. The couple became the proud parents of five children. Jacinto was a wonderful provider for his family and his entire family was his greatest joy and highest priority.

 

After suffering a back injury, Jacinto and his family relocated to Mason City in 1968, where he was employed with the Milwaukee (Sioux Line) Railroad as a track maintainer for the following 16 years. He was a member of the Railroad Union.

 

At this same time, Jacinto and Mary Ellen accepted the privilege of raising their oldest granddaughter, Janelle. In 1999, Jacinto and Mary Ellen moved to Cape Fair, Mo., and soon after the move, he and Mary Ellen both began working at the Fairfield Marriott in Branson.

 

Some of Jacinto’s leisure activities and interests included watching boxing, rodeos and the weather channel on television, vegetable gardening, tending to his yard, dining out with Mary Ellen, reading maps, wrenching on cars, antique shopping, roping and his companionship with his pet dogs. His children recall his love of watching cartoons with his children and later, with his grandchildren.

 

Jacinto will be dearly missed by all who have shared in his life.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary Ellen Barrientes, of Cape Fair, Mo.; his three sons, Jacinto (Jessica Kohler) Barrientes Jr., Jay Barrientes and Jonathan (Nycole Hrubes) Barrientes, all of Mason City; his three sisters, Eloisa Barrientes, Nicholasa Hernandez and Dominga Gaona; and his three brothers, Victor, Pete and Pablino Barrientes.

 

Jacinto will also be cherished in the hearts of his grandchildren, Alex Suhr, Janelle Marie (Marshall) Huffman, Jacinto Barrientes III, Taylor Lawrenz, Jasmine Barrientes, Jessie James Barrientes, Maya Barrientes, Aleah Barrientes and Jayden Barrientes; his two great-grandchildren, Jacob Suhr and Alexa Suhr; and numerous other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding Jacinto in death are his mother, Nasaria Barrientes; his father, Pablino Barrientes; his infant daughter, Janelle Barrientes; and his son, Jessie James Barrientes.

F. Ray Hartson


 

WATERLOO — F. Ray Hartson, 86, father of Rita Blaisdell, of Waterloo and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday morning (Jan. 18, 2007) at Covenant Medical Center, of natural causes.

 

He was born May 9, 1920, in Clinton, the son of Frederick R. and Ethel Grace Stowers Hartson. He married Mary Margaret Cunningham on June 28, 1947, in Clinton. She preceded him in death on April 10, 1989.

 

Ray served in the Army during World War II in France. He worked for Bausch and Lomb for 40 years and then with the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel for more than 20 years. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, serving as a cantor as well as singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Waterloo Elks No. 290, Cedar Falls Amvets and the UNI Athletic Club. He was a past member of the Clinton Lions Club.

 

Ray was active in Troop 87 at Orchard Hill School in Cedar Falls and chairman of the Troop committee. He was past district commander and also served on the executive board of the Winnebago Council of Boy Scouts, representing the council at many national meetings. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and the Saint George Award. One of Ray’s most enjoyable experiences was climbing the Tooth of Time in Philmont, New Mexico.

 

He is survived by one son, Thomas M. (Marcia) Hartson of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Mary Ann (Craig) Lee, of Cedar Falls, and Rita Rae (Wayne) Blaisdell, of Clear Lake; one sister, Jean Alyea of Covington, Ind.; and five grandchildren, Jason (Hanna Kolodziejski) Lee, Erica Lee, Andrew (Tasha) Blaisdell, and Michael and Becky Blaisdell.

 

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt Olivet Cemetery.

 

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball in Waterloo, and an hour before services at the church. There will be a 7 p.m. vigil service Sunday at the funeral home.

Edna Cora Halvorson

 

NORTHWOOD — Edna Cora Halvorson, 96, of Northwood, died Wednesday (Jan. 17, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. Edna had been a resident of the Lutheran Home since Dec. 29, 2006.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, 1406 Central Ave., Northwood, with the Rev. Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial will be in the Somber Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

 

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood. Visitation will also be one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

 

The family of Edna Cora Halvorson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church or to Somber Lutheran Church Cemetery Association in her memory.

 

Edna Cora Halvorson was born on May 5, 1910, in Freeman Township in Freeborn County, Minn., the daughter of Emil and Minnie (Peterson) Nelson. She attended school in Freeborn County, and graduated from Albert Lea (Minn.) High School. Edna received her teachers certificate at the teachers college in Austin, Minn. After completing her schooling, she taught in country and public schools for 30 years in Freeborn County

 

She was united in marriage to Melvin Halvorson on August 16, 1931. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1980.

 

Edna enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards, sewing, making quilts for missions, flowers, especially geraniums, and was making lefse until a year ago. Edna also enjoyed spending time with her family.

 

Edna was a member and very active in her church, at First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, and was a former member of Somber Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — Susan M. Fuller Grove, 42, of Broomfield, Colo., formerly of Garner, died Sunday (Jan. 14, 2007) at Avista Hospital in Louisville, Colo., after a long, courageous battle with colon cancer.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner.

 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Susan Marie Fuller Grove, daughter of Dr. Lyle R. and JoAnne (Thielen) Fuller, was born on Dec. 29, 1964, at Britt. She was the seventh of eight children. She grew up in Garner and graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1983, where she was active in National Honor Society, cheerleading, drama and was on Student Council.

 

She continued her education at the University of Iowa, graduating with a BA in elementary education. Susan then taught for several years in Itasca, Ill. On Sept. 5, 1986, she was married to David Grove, her high school sweetheart. They lived in Chicago, Denver, Cincinnati, and, in 2000, moved to Broomfield, Colo.

 

She is survived by her husband, David Grove, of Broomfield, Colo.; their three children, Patrick, 20, Joseph, 16, and Sarah, 10; her mother, JoAnne Fuller; brothers, Joe, Steve, Mark, John and Greg Fuller; her favorite sister, Tres Brown; and 24 nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Lyle; and her brother Michel.

Greg Kathan

 

OSAGE — Maurice Gregory Kathan, of Osage, passed away Jan. 11, 2007, in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., at the age of 79, after an extended cancer illness of 17 years.

 

He was born Aug. 15, 1927, in Osage, to the late Maurice (Kit) and Merle Kathan. In 1950, he married Rita Quinby; to their union three children were born. In 1966, he married his best friend and loving wife of 40 years, the best catch of his life, Marcella White. Greg served in the Coast Guard at the age of 17 during World War II.

 

Greg loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, the Hawkeyes and spending time with his family and friends. Yearly fishing trips to Canada were a wonderful getaway. He also enjoyed living in Arizona during the winters, fishing for striped bass. Greg was known as a talented and successful businessman for the Carnation Dairy Co. and Kathan Real Estate Inc. in Osage. He will be dearly missed.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Pearl was united in marriage to Donald Patrick Aird; to this union two children were born. Pearl and Donald moved to Mason City, where she worked for Mercy Hospital as a dietary tech for many years until her retirement in 1983.

 

Pearl loved gardening, sewing, reading, and walking; her greatest love was spending time with family and friends.

 

Pearl is survived by her children, Patrick Aird and special friend, Darlene Graves, of Mason City, Scott Aird, of Mason City, and Ruth (Jerry) Bose, of Jacksonville, Ill.; grandchildren, Tanner, Ashley, Donald, and Terri Aird; great-grandchildren, Rachel, Angel and Destiny, along with many other relatives and friends.

Robert T. Kelly

 

BRITT — Robert T. Kelly, 88, of Britt, passed away on Monday (Jan. 15, 2007) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

 

Funeral services for Robert Kelly will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 19, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt with Father Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery near Britt. Military graveside services are under the direction of the Britt Ceremonial Honor Guard.

 

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m. There will be visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

 

Robert Terrance Kelly, son of Frank V. Kelly and Ella (Mullin) Kelly, was born Oct. 28, 1918, on a farm southwest of Britt. He was educated the first five years in the rural schools of Hancock County. Later, the family moved to a farm in Britt township. So his later schooling was completed in the Britt Public Schools, graduating in 1936.

 

After graduation, he worked on the family farm for two years before attending Iowa State College, graduating with a degree in general engineering. In 1942, he started working for Glen L. Martin in Omaha, where they were building the B-26 airplanes. In 1943, he transferred to Seattle as a liaison engineer between Glen L. Martin and Boeing for the manufacture of B-29 bombers. In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy Reserve as an ensign. The war ended in 1945 and he was discharged from the Navy as a second lieutenant.

 

On Jan. 3, 1946, he was married to Evangeline Cruise at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt. He went to Indianapolis, where he worked for 20 years for Factory Insurance Co. as a fire protection engineer. During this time, he also received his master’s degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. Upon the receipt of his master’s degree, he elected to join the staff at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio in the same capacity. Three years later, he went to St. Paul to work for the 3M Co. After 13 years, he retired and moved back to Britt.

 

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the National Fire Protection Association, Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Society of Certified Safety Engineers, the Britt Historical Society and the Britt Library Board. Upon his return to Britt, he volunteered to be the area weatherman with the assistance of Bernard Kunkel.

 

Survivors include his wife, Evangeline; two daughters: Elizabeth (Ken) Gigax and Paula Kelly. He is also survived by his three sisters: Arlene McDermott, Rose Mary Stevermer and Teresa Rottinghaus; and one brother, Paul (Marlys) Kelly. In addition, he is survived by two sisters-in­law: Bonnie Kelly and Noreen Kelly. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Joseph and Francis.

 

After his retirement, Bob was able to enjoy one of his favorite hobbies — traveling. He and his wife spent many years enjoying tours and spending the winter in Arizona, Texas and California.

CHARLES CITY — Naomi “Fran” Huxsol, 89, of Charles City, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Naomi Frances Logan Huxsol was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Persia, Tenn., the daughter of John and Lottie (Pitts) Logan. She attended Stillman Valley High School in Stillman Valley, Ill.

On Oct. 30, 1944, she was united in marriage to Walter Huxsol at Halls, Tenn. In 1946, they moved south of Charles City where they farmed until Walter’s retirement in 1981, at which time they moved into Charles City. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Heritage Club and the Chat-A-Bit Club.

Fran’s interests included cooking, decorating her home, collecting dolls and bells, and reading and working crossword puzzles.

Fran always enjoyed being with her family and looked forward to spending time with them. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was dearly loved and will live on in fond memories by the loved ones left behind.

Living family members include two sons, James (Beth) Huxsol of Brookfield, Wis., and Robert (Laurie) Huxsol of Sahuarita, Ariz.; two daughters, Connie (Van) Hertel of Alton, N.H., and Patricia Huxsol of Charles City; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jo O’Briant of Brownfield, Texas, and Merle Sherman,of Hobbs, N.M.; and three brothers, Robert Logan of Franklin Grove, Ill, Gary (Brenda) Logan of Brownwood, Texas, and William (Jean) Logan, of Ocala, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter, on Nov. 27, 1996; two grandsons, James Huxsol Jr. and David Fisher; three sisters, Hedy McCoy, Jeanette Gilroy and Marlene Ebaugh; a brother, John Logan Jr.; and a son-in-law, Monty Anderson.

Bette passed away in her sleep Monday (Jan. 15, 2007) at Thorne Crest Retirement Center, where she had made her home for the last 18 years.

Bette Delores Lovik was born Jan. 7, 1921, to Anna (Herzog) and Edward Ziesmer in Ventura, Iowa. She graduated from Garner High School. After high school, Bette moved to Lake Mills and worked for a short time at The Graphic Publishing Co.

It was in Lake Mills she met and married Dr. Stanley Lovik, DVM. Doc and Bette had four children: Stephen (deceased) and Linda (Bass), Nate, Jackie, and Josh Lovik of Iowa City, Iowa; Shirlee Lovik Kittleman (deceased) and Thomas, Brad and Sara Kittleman of Florida; Tom and Mary (Morris), Julianna and William Lovik of Okemos, Mich.; Rick and Kelly (Shaffer), Ben and Lindsey Lovik of Prior Lake, Minn. Bette is also survived by her sister-in-law, Darlene Ziesmer; a niece, Betty Ann Goll-Muth; and nieces and nephews in Garner, Iowa.

Doc and Betty lived for many years in Lake Mills, where they formed strong bonds with many folks and always had a pot of coffee and some bars ready for unexpected company. Bette was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society and enjoyed playing golf and bridge and in later years frequent games of Uno and “Kings in the Corner” with her friends. She was also active in the Literary Club and her Circle at Salem Lutheran Church.

Bette’s keen sense of humor, her love for her children and her grandchildren and her strong spirit in spite of her long battle with multiple sclerosis will be cherished and remembered by her family and her friends in Lake Mills, Garner, and at Thorne Crest.
