J. Harold Baker

BELMOND — J. Harold Baker, 85, a lifelong resident, and farmer, of Belmond, died on Friday (March 24, 2006) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Belmond United Methodist Church. The Reverend Michael Druhl will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., in Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

J. Harold Baker, the son of Guy D. and Mildred (Zook) Baker, was born on Aug. 5, 1920, on a farm in rural  Belmond, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from eighth grade at the Baker School.

As a young man, he began his lifelong passion and career of farming the land, first helping out with the family farming operation and then on his own.

Harold was united in marriage to Lydia Ostendorf, the daughter of Otto F. And Katie (Blau) Ostendorf, on Dec. 14, 1941, at her parents’ home in Alexander. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Cynthia Kay.

Following their marriage, the couple farmed together in rural Belmond, raising crops and dairy cattle for many years. Harold was also a long time seed-corn salesman for “Super-Crossed” Seed Co., today’s “Midwest Genetics.”

Harold’s love for the land and working the fields continued into his 80s when one could often find him in the cab of a tractor or combine diligently assisting his grandsons in the farming operation. Even in the times when he was no longer able to climb into the driver’s seat, his devotion and passion for the farm remained steadfast as he would inquire about how the crops were coming along, what the percentage of moisture was, or share his knowledge with his family about a particular farming task. He was the consumate farmer.

Harold and Lydia were not only partners in the farming operations, they were also partners in life’s journey for nearly 65 years. Harold loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, whether it was a family celebration, on a camping trip, or being a spectator at one of their many extra-curricular activities. He and Lydia were their Number One cheerleaders.

In earlier years, they were avid card players and Harold enjoyed bowling. He was a longtime member of the Belmond Lions Club, and the Belmond United Methodist Church.

In more recent times, one might find Harold peering out across the fields from his farm place west of Belmond watching to see if the grandsons were working the fields in the proper technique, or visiting with family and friends. Harold might also be seen soaking up the sun at the fair as he watched his grandkids participate in various activities, or explored the displays of farm machinery and other exhibits.

He also looked forward to family camping excursions and going out for dinner. He and Lydia might also be seen surrounded by the loving care of their daughter, Cindy.

Those who knew Harold well will also remember his vast knowledge of life on the farm, his sharp wit and straight forward attitude.

Those left to cherish the memory of J. Harold Baker include his wife and life companion of nearly 65 years, Lydia Baker of Belmond; daughter, Cynthia Kay Mayo, and husband, Philip, of Belmond; sister, Ruth Erickson and husband, Robert, of Belmond; brother, Richard Baker and wife, Elaine, of Hampton; grandsons, Philip George Mayo, Jr. “Jody” and wife, Lisa, of Belmond, John Percy Mayo and wife, Michelle, of Belmond, and Eric Thomas Mayo and wife, Christine, of Belmond; great grandchildren, Nichole Marie Mayo, Andrew Taylor Mayo, Corbin Andrew Mayo, Gregory Eugene Collins, Ashlyn Rose Mayo, Victoria Raven Mayo; and many nieces and nephews.
