Rose was united in marriage to Henry Lewis on Nov. 26, 1914, in Garner. Henry and Rose owned and worked Lewis Produce Store in Klemme together. After Henry (“Heinie”) died in 1944, Rose continued to operate the business herself until she sold the store to Fred Bell in 1946. Rose and Fred were married on Sept. 22, 1946. The couple continued to run the business until retirement in 1978.

Her love for others continued to shine through even in her years at the care center where she was always there to greet the staff and other residents with a warm welcome and friendly smile.

Rose made the best homemade chicken and noodles. It was a favorite with her grandchildren.

Rose had done excellent crocheting and handcraft work and all of her family have heirlooms to enjoy and remember the fruits of her labor.

Those who knew Rose during her life’s journey of more than 110 years will remember her as a hard working, caring and dignified lady who carried herself in a vibrant and meticulous manner until the very end of her life’s journey.

Monsignor Robert G. Hogan

CLEAR LAKE — Monsignor Robert G. Hogan, 73, of 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, died Thursday (March 16, 2006) at Mason City.

A celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery Waterloo.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with a fourth degree K.C. rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Haitian Children in care of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Newman Catholic Schools.

Robert G. Hogan was born in Dyersville on Jan 26, 1933, to Edward and Anastasia (Ungs) Hogan, the fifth of six children, three boys and three girls. The family moved to Waterloo in 1938, where Robert completed grade and high school.

His first thoughts of a career were the usual fireman or policeman, but in his last year in high school, Robert won an academic scholarship to Loras College. With the scholarship and guided by his mother’s strong respect for priests (two of his great-uncles were priests), his career turned to the priesthood.

He was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Dubuque on Jan. 31, 1959. Father Hogan spent the next five years teaching high school Spanish and religion in the Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, Iowa, also serving as associate pastor at St. Athanasius Church in Jesup, Iowa. In 1964, he returned to Waterloo to serve as associate pastor at Sacred Heart Church, again teaching Spanish and religion, this time at Columbus High School. In 1969, he was moved to associate pastor of St. Patrick Church in Dubuque, and teaching Spanish and religion at Wahlert High School. Summers were spent studying Spanish in Washington, D.C., the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. Father Hogan was offered two teaching fellowships at the University of Iowa, but church needs came first and he was assigned in 1972 to Holy Family in Mason City as administrator and member of the team ministry that served Holy Family, St. Joseph, Newman High School and Mercy Hospital, Mason City, and a church in Plymouth, Iowa. In his spare time, he and Father Mel Heman co-owned a light aircraft which they used to travel to various meetings. This lasted until 1980, when he was assigned Pastor of Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque. Assisted by one associate pastor, this continued until May 1985, when he was assigned as finance officer for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. A year later, Father Hogan assumed the added responsibility as pastor of Sacred Heart in Fillmore, Iowa. Holding both positions meant daily trips to Dubuque.

Between 1990 and 1993, Father Hogan was director of educational development and from 1986 to 2003 was director of stewardship for the archdiocese. During the period from 1990 to 1996, he was a member of the National Board of Stewardship and in 1995, served as vice president of the National Catholic Stewardship Council.

In 1992, Father Hogan became Monsignor Hogan, and in 1993 he assumed the pastorship of St. Matthew in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This continued until 1999, when he was assigned to St. Patrick’s in Clear Lake.

Monsignor Hogan was also a member of the archdiocesan finance committee, the archdiocesan investment committee and the St. Raphael Priest Retirement Fund.

Monsignor enjoyed his family, traveling, singing, story telling, his dog, Blaze, and hunting and fishing with the same group of friends for 46 years.

He is survived by three sisters, Virginia Weidner of Waterloo, Kathleen Hogan of Chicago, Ill., and Carol Reyhons and her husband Dick, of Davenport; two sisters-in-law, Lois Hogan of Muskegan, Mich., and Marlene Hogan of Waterloo; and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James E. and Kenneth C. Hogan; and one brother-in-law, Hamilton Weidner.
