James W. Geesman

March 20, 1917 - July 8, 2006

ROSSMOOR, Calif. — Jim Geesman, a former Mason City resident and World War II B-17 pilot, passed away at age 89 on July 8, 2006, after a brief hospitalization in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Jim was a devoted father of three sons who believed first and foremost in the power of example. An easygoing and selfless man, he spent his entire life caring for and helping others.

He was born in Melvin, Iowa, on March 20, 1917, and grew up on the family farm near Alden, Minn. Like many others during the Great Depression, he dropped out of high school before graduation in order to relieve financial pressure on his large family. Consequently, he placed a high value on education and drew particular satisfaction from seeing each of his children graduate from college and earn advanced degrees.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and took pride in successfully qualifying for pilot’s training. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1944 after training in Santa Ana, Dos Palos and Lemoore, Calif., as well as Douglas, Ariz. He was promoted to first lieutenant after being stationed in England. Between September 1944 and March 1945, he piloted B-17s on 35 combat missions with the 8th Air Force, flying as deputy squadron leader on 15 missions. He was awarded the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters as well as two Bronze Stars.

After returning from Europe, Jim married his wife, Junne, and lived in Long Beach, Calif. In 1950, they were among the initial home buyers in Lakewood, Calif., which was the largest residential subdivision in history when it opened. They spent more than three decades there, living the Southern California dream. In 1970, he bought the house next door so that his mother-in-law and her mother could live near the family.

Jim worked as a salesman in the frozen food, distilled spirits, automobile and real estate industries in his postwar career. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and bird hunting and coaching his sons’ baseball teams. He was still pitching batting practice in his early 50s.

He and Junne retired to Capitola, Calif., on Monterey Bay in 1984, in order to be nearer their three sons who had all migrated to Northern California. Jim turned his backyard into a large fruit and vegetable garden, and nursed Junne through 10 bedridden years of her struggle against rheumatoid arthritis until her death in 1994.

Jim moved to Rossmoor, Calif., in 1955 and renewed his interest in golf. He played regularly with his sons and anybody else who was interested, until being sidelined by macular degeneration a few years ago.

He is survived by his Iowa siblings, Charles, Nina, Florence, Howard and John; his sister, Eileen, of Los Alamitos, Calif.; his sons, John of Orinda, Calif., Jim of Aptos, Calif., and Joe of Berkeley, Calif.; his grandchildren, Victoria Langston, Patricia Bingham, Glenn Geesman, Grace Geesman and Michelle Geesman; and his great-grandchildren, Lauren Langston, Drew Langston and Ryan Langston.
