John H. Emmel

CHARLES CITY — John H. Emmel, 90, of 600 Freeman St. died Thursday (July 20, 2006) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2006, at the First Congregational Church, 502 N. Jackson St., Charles City, with Pastor Phil Corr officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 405 Blunt St., Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to John’s services Monday at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the First Congregational Church or the Girls Softball Association, both in Charles City.

John Henry Emmel was born Dec. 8, 1915, to Henry and Nanny (Sindt) Emmel in Montevideo, Minn. He graduated from the Floyd school in 1933.

John was united in marriage to Bernice M. Bauer on March 23, 1937. John was a longtime farmer of both grain and livestock. He was a member of the First Christian Church and its building committee; he was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Floyd County Pork Producers and Floyd County Cattlemen’s Association.

John was also involved with St. Charles Township as a trustee for many years and was a senior representative for the Iowa Caucus. John was a Republican poll worker and received a 20-year award for the AARP Tax Aide Program. John rode RAGBRAI for seven years and BRAT for two years.

John is survived by his three daughters, Marjorie (Joe) Cromey, of Albuquerque, N.M., Darlene (Dean) Vincent, of West Chester, Ohio, and Joyce (Richard) Knight, of Floyd; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Ann (Merlin) McCabe, of Cedar Falls, Mabel (Arnold) Grummer, of Appleton, Wis., and Eileen Heitman, of Charles City; one brother, Marvin (Jean) Emmel, of Toledo, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Betty Emmel, of Charles City.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Mary Emmel, on March 8, 2006; his parents, Henry and Nanny Emmel; an infant grandson; one sister, Leona Neir; four brothers, Arnold, Eldo, Walter and Glen Emmel; and two brothers-in-law, Bernard Heitman and Harley Neir.

Roy G. Waddingham

NORA SPRINGS — Roy G. Waddingham, 96, died Wednesday (July 19, 2006) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Marvin F. Freerksen

MASON CITY — Marvin F. Freerksen, 65, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E., died Wednesday (July 19, 2006) at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Holmes Cemetery in Holmes.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Marvin Fred Freerksen was born on Nov. 24, 1940, to Fred and Mae (Bornholt) Freerksen in Eagle Grove. He attended school in Eagle Grove. Marvin enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 and received his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1966.

He worked for Anderson-Erickson Dairy, Schwans and Ennis Trucking in Clarion. He was a city bus driver for Mason City Transit and Huffman Transportation. Marvin also was apartment manager at the DeVille IV Apartments in Mason City until his retirement.

Marvin enjoyed his grandchildren, coffee at Hy Vee and visiting with his neighbors.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose and Elks.

Marvin is survived by two daughters, Anita (Kevin) Eschweiler, of New Hampton, and Tanya (Don) Bates, of Pleasant Hill; seven grandchildren, Taylor and Logan Eschweiler, of New Hampton, Amanda, Dylan, Ally, Ashley, and DJ Bates, of Pleasant Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mae Freerksen; son, Brian; brother, Jerry; and his close companion, Millie Johnson.

SHEFFIELD — Hazel B. Woods, 98, of Sheffield, died Wednesday (July 19, 2006) at her home.

Lena Mae was born July 18, 1930, in rural Woden, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Boyken) Schmidt. She was raised on the family farm near Woden where she had many fond memories while growing up there. Lena Mae graduated from Titonka High School then attended Hamilton School of Business in Mason City.

She married James J. Hickey Oct. 16, 1950, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City.

She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and church circle.

Lena Mae is survived by a daughter, Linda Kay Miner and husband, Daniel, of Onamia, Minn.; sons, James E. Hickey of Taipei, Taiwan, Joseph H. Hickey and wife, Teresa, of Mason City and Ernest M. Hickey of Mason City; grandsons, Brian and Justin Miner; granddaughters, Alyssa, Brittani and Taylor Hickey; sisters, Marie Schmidt of Mason City, Erna Sleper of Titonka; brother, Ernest Schmidt, and wife, Marilyn, of Mason City.

Lena Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James; and three half-brothers, Dick, Bill and Henry Mayland.

Roy G. Waddingham

Roy George Waddingham was born Feb. 20, 1910, the son of John William and Louise (Jahnke) Waddingham.

Roy was united in marriage to Margie Andreasen on Dec. 18, 1933, in Klemme; to this union two daughters were born. Roy and Margie farmed together in the Hancock county area until their retirement.

Roy loved traveling, woodworking and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs.

Roy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Margie Waddingham, of Nora Springs; daughters, Donna (Larry) Gelner of Charles City and Janice (Duane) Colby of Lake Mills; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Kuhlers, of Forest City; sister-in-law, Irene Waddingham, of Klemme; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, John William and Louise Waddingham; siblings, Belle Karsjens, John Waddingham, Doris Tebben, Virgil Waddingham and Bobby Waddingham.

Evelyn Kathryn Brunsvold

ALBERT LEA, Minn. —Evelyn Kathryn Brunsvold, 84, of Albert Lea, Minn., died Thursday (July 20, 2006) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 24, at Grace Lutheran Church, 918 Garfield Ave., Albert Lea, Minn., with the Rev. John Henriksen officiating. Burial will be in Somber Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, Iowa, and one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

The family of Evelyn Kathryn Brunsvold has requested that memorial contributions be made to Somber Lutheran Cemetery in her memory.

Evelyn Kathryn Brunsvold was born on March 29, 1922, in Northwood, the daughter of Albert W. and Ida (Nieman-Hagen) Ewald. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood. She attended kindergarten through the fifth grade at the Northwood public school, and sixth through eighth grade at a rural Worth County school, graduating from Northwood High School in May 1940. Evelyn also attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and later taught in a rural Worth County school for two years.

She was united in marriage to Arnold Brunsvold on June 21, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood. Together they lived in rural Northwood, rural Hanlontown and Forest City, Iowa, and most recently in Albert Lea, Minn.

Evelyn worked as a homemaker, waitress, Avon representative, driver delivering Winnebago motor homes, clerk in the Forest City bakery, courier for Kodak film processing and as a bookkeeper for Arnold’s Windshield repair business.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, dancing, baking and embroidery work, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her children and grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Arnold Brunsvold, of Albert Lea, Minn.; her children and grandchildren, Patricia (Bill) Searles of Albert Lea, Minn., and their family, Troy, Marnie, Shannon, and Natalie, Travis (Marcia) Brunsvold of Bettendorf, Iowa, and their family, Jesse and Nicole, Marilyn (Dick) Helling of Hudson, Iowa, and their family, Kristopher, Aaron and Melissa, Judy Benson of Forest City, Iowa, and her fiance, Rick Becker, of Shakopee, Minn., and her daughter, Tiffany, and Gary (Jennifer) Brunsvold of Yukon, Okla., and their children, Morgan and Garrett. Also left to cherish her memory are her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Calli (Troy’s), Samantha, Dylan and Brooke (Marnie’s), Hanna (Natalie’s), and a baby boy due in September (Tiffany’s).

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a daughter who died in infancy, son, Larry; grandson, Jerimy (Judy’s); and a sister, Irene Gullickson.

Otto J. Schwartz

DES MOINES — Otto J. Schwartz, 85, died of lung cancer Thursday (July 20, 2006) at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, at the Mercy Court Apartments Chapel in Des Moines where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Cremation will follow the service and burial will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manly.

Otto was born in Urbana, Ill., and lived in Mason City for many years before moving to Des Moines five years ago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.

He owned and operated Otto’s TV Sales and Service in Mason City for 30 years, retiring in 1984.

He enjoyed all electronics including computer and ham radio operation.

Otto is survived by his daughter, Rosemary Chodur (John McClain) of Altoona; grandson, Douglas (Diana) Chodur and their children, Alisha and Donovan, of Oakland Acres; granddaughter, Debra (Kevin) Flippo and their children, Michael and Joshua, of Tooele, Utah; grandson, Daniel (Tricia) Chodur and their son, Ethan, of Altoona; and brother, Robert (Joan) Schwartz of Bonita Springs, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda; brother, George; sister, Ruth Mary; and his great-granddaughter, Michelle.

Ruth Wilde

ST. ANSGAR — Ruth Josephine Laura Wilde, 90, of rural Osage, died on Thursday (July 20, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson and AiM Irmgard Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, with visitation continuing one hour prior to service at the church.

Ruth Josephine Laura (Dutte) Wilde was born to John and Sophia (Seeger) Dutte on Dec. 20, 1915, at their home north of Toeterville, Iowa. She was baptized on Jan. 2, 1916, by the Rev. E.M. Lehmonn at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville. Ruth was confirmed on April 13, 1930, by the Rev. Bosholm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville. She attened school through eighth grade at Drown schoolhouse north of Toeterville.

On Aug. 29, 1943, Ruth married Arnold Wilde at St. Ansgar Emmanuel Lutheran Church. To this union was born two sons, Richard and Frederick. Ruth enjoyed gardening, and always had the coffee on, but was best known for her cinnamon rolls. Every visitor always left with a pan of her cinnamon rolls.

She was preceded in death by parents, John and Sophia Dutte; husband, Arnold Wilde, in 1976; a stillborn son, Frederick, in 1951, and daughter, Marlys Jones, in 1981.

Ruth is survived by her two sons, Richard (Sandy) Wilde of Osage and Allen (Mariedna) Wilde of Osage; six grandchildren, Brian Wilde, Barry Wilde, Joaquin Jones, Janie Jones-Smeby, Julie Dahl and Kevin Wilde; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Walk of Kensett; and son-in-law, Charles Jones of Nashua.

MASON CITY — Cecil “Jim” R. Shultz, 73, of Mason City, died Friday (July 21, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Steve Palo of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Jim was born April 6, 1933, in Northwood, Iowa, the son of Earl and Myrtle (Campbell) Shultz. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955. Jim married Loretta “Pat” Hohenfield in 1956 and they were married for 50 years. Jim worked at various delivery and farming jobs until going to work for Ag Processing where he worked in the maintenance department for 35 years until his retirement in 1990. Jim was a handyman that was always willing and enjoyed to give a hand when asked or needed. Family was important to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim enjoyed attending auctions, camping, fishing, gardening and woodworking. His favorite part of the day was when he could spend time with family and friends having his morning coffee. He could often be found sitting on his front porch relaxing and counting cars.

Jim is survived by his wife, Pat, of Mason City; children, Neil (Sue) Bryant of Mason City, Jerry (Mariann) Bryant of Tracy, Minn., Danny Shultz of Mason City, Patty Donisi of Mason City, Laurie (Marty) Cassel of Mason City and Joe (Jane) Shultz of Mason City; 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gould, Donald and Bobby Shultz; and three sisters, Ruth Vierkant, Bonnie Gabel and Mary Plagge.

Sherwood ‘Woody’ Paullus

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Sherwood “Woody” Paullus of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away at his home Monday, July 10, 2006.

He was born March 1, 1941, to Fritz and Fern Paullus of rural Latimer, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sherrill Hansen. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Paullus; and two sons, Jeff Paullus and his wife, Marie, Brent Paullus and his wife, Missy; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Kristin, Jacob and Sydney; and brother, Fred Paullus. He attended Mason City Junior College in Mason City and Drake University in Des Moines.

He married Sharon Wray on Sept. 3, 1961. Woody was a master sergeant in the United States Army. He was employed by TSC Stores for 27 years as a manager and zone manager, self-employed for six years and retired from Coleman Co. in May 2005. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. The master craftsman enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling with his family and friends.

John Edwin Pauley

MASON CITY — John Edwin Pauley, 89, of 2060 S. Kentucky, Apartment 410, Mason City, passed away Saturday (July 22, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (June 25, 2006) at First United Methodist Chapel, 119 So. Georgia Avenue, Mason City, with the Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins officiating. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Mason City.

John was born on May 24, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Ray E. and Pearl Markham Pauley. He attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. After high school, he went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa graduating in 1939 with a B.A. degree in business. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II, from 1942-1945. He attained the rank of major in the Marine Corps Reserve.

After returning home, John went to work with his father, Ray E. Pauley Company, a sheet metal and heating and air conditioning firm. This Lennox dealership was the oldest Lennox dealership in the United States.

On Jan. 15, 1947, he married Domini V. Haynes at the First Christian Church in Mason City. John became president of Ray E. Pauley Company in 1954 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984. He and Domini then divided the next 20 years living in Mason City and spending the winters at their home in Naples, Fla.

John’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved spending his time with them, and never missed an opportunity to participate in their lives. He also was an avid golfer, fisherman and card player. He made seven holes-in-one during his golfing career. John traveled often to northern Minnesota and Canada to fish with his buddies, and played cards with a passion at the Mason City Country Club. In his later years, he enjoyed meeting up with his morning coffee friends at McDonald’s in Mason City to tell stories and solve the problems of the world. Before an illness curtailed his activity, John could often be seen on early morning walks throughout Mason City and Naples.

During his life, John was a member of the Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Temple, Rotary International, Mason City Country Club, First Methodist Church in Mason City, Marine Corps Reserve, and the Cornell College Alumni Association. He served as president of the Mason City Builders Exchange and as president and director of the Sheet Metal Contractors of Iowa.

John is survived by his wife, Domini; and children: John (Jack) E. Pauley, Jr., Lake Oswego, Oregon, Tom (Ava Marie) Pauley, Forest City and Tris (John) Hasapopoulos, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Seth (Samantha) Pauley, Wilmington, Del., Greta Pauley, New York City, N.Y., Gracie Pauley, Lake Oswego, Oregon, Will Hasapopoulos and his fiancee, Heidi Harapat, of Alexandria, Minn., Catherine (Kit) Hasapopoulos of White Bear Lake, Minn., Callie Hasapopoulos, of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Jameson Pauley of Forest City. In addition, he is survived by his brother-in-law, Stanley Haynes and his wife, Alice, of Mason City and many nieces and nephews. John will also be missed by his many friends, both residents and staff at Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living in Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Pearl Pauley, parents-in-law, Stanley L. and Vinnie Haynes; brothers, Robert Pauley, Harold Pauley, and sisters, Ruth (Verne) Redeker; and Catherine (William) Haynes.

John was an optimistic, outgoing man who had many friends, both young and old, in Mason City and Naples. His sense of humor made him a joy to be around and his love of life was evident throughout his years of life. He will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Franklin Helland Haugland was born on March 24, 1930, in Eden Township, rural Thompson, Iowa, to parents, Oscar and Ellen (Helland) Haugland. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minn., and was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. Frank attended school in Thompson, Iowa, through the tenth grade when he moved with his mother to Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1948.

Following his schooling, Frank worked at the Decker Meat Packing Plant in Mason City.

On Jan. 7, 1954, Frank enlisted in the United States Army, serving at Fort Lewis, Washington, serving until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 6, 1956.

On January 7, 1956, Franklin was united in marriage with Betty Kurth in Tacoma, Wash. Frank and Betty moved to Boulder, Colo., where they owned and operated a motel for several years. The couple then moved to Newport, Oregon, and owned and operated an Oceanside motel.

In the late 1960s, Frank and Betty moved back to Lake Mills, where Frank was co-owner of a shoe store, and became the superintendent of the Rice Lake Golf Course in 1970. Betty passed away on March 8, 1994.

Frank was united in marriage with Wanda (Hermanson) Hanna on Dec. 2, 1995, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided at Rice Lake, rural Lake Mills, Iowa. Frank enjoyed and kept active at the Rice Lake Golf Course where he was the groundskeeper for 21 years. In 1986, Frank received the Iowa Golf Association Superintendent of the Year award, and he retired from his work in 1991. Frank kept busy owning Rice Lake Golf Carts and continued with the business until 2001.

In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking (especially Kumla) traveling, having coffee with his friends, and giving golf cart rides to his grandchildren. Above all, Frank had a keen sense of humor which he maintained throughout his illness.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda of Lake Mills; step- children, Randy Hanna and his wife, Geralyn of Joice, Tim Hanna and his wife, Kimberly, of Lake Mills, Beth Edwards and her husband, Grant of Albert Lea, Minn., Paul Hanna and his wife, Denise, of Elbow Lake, Minn., and PFC Jay Hanna and his wife, Mandy, of Mackenbach, Germany; grandchildren, Melanie Henderson and her husband, Aaron, Cory Hanna and his fiancée, Abby Larson, Chelsea Hanna, Nicole Hanna, Dayna Edwards, Zachary Edwards, Benjamin Hanna, Christopher Hanna, Jessica Dahl and her husband, Dean, Allison Hanna, Dylan Hanna, Blake Hanna and Tyler Hanna; one great granddaughter, Kadence Henderson; two brothers, A. Oscar Haugland and his wife, Janet of DeKalb, Ill., and Dr. Stanley Haugland and his wife, Jean, of West Des Moines; a sister, Connie Zakula and her husband, Ray of Carlton, Minn.; sister-in-law, Agnes Haugland of Littleton, Colo.; brother-in-law, Roger Hermanson and his wife, Ruth, of Lake Mills; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

After his schooling, Don worked a couple of years at the lumberyard and then started working at the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Wesley in 1953.

Don was married to Joy Curran on Oct. 18, 1955, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple lived in Wesley, where Don continued being a dedicated worker for the elevator until his retirement in 1995.

Don was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. He was also an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus in Algona.

Don enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards and rolling dice for coffee with his friends. He loved people and enjoyed life in general.

Don died on Saturday (July 22, 2006) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt at the age of 76.

Don is survived by his wife, Joy, of Wesley, and his daughters, Jean Salz and husband, Dean, of Algona, and Joyce Strimpfel and husband, Kyle, of Hankan, S.C.

He is also survived by his granddaughter, Kylynne; his grandson, Collin; one brother, Bill Hanig and wife, Karen, of Wesley; one sister, Mary (Molly) Becker and husband, Albert, of Algona; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.

James Dean Trettin was born on Nov. 23, 1959, to Vernon W. and Marlys (Hansen) Trettin, of Clear Lake. James attended and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1978. He later attended North Iowa Area Community College where he received his LPN degree. James was working as a LPN in a care center in Phoenix before his illness.

James and Sandra Schumaker were united in marriage on Dec. 16, 1978. The couple had a daughter and named her Casey. In his younger years, James enjoyed training dogs. James was a pet lover, and also enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to music.

James is survived by his daughter, Casey Henaman and husband, Tyler, of Manly; grandson, Cole Henaman, of Manly; mother, Marlys Trettin, of Clear Lake; brother, Michael Trettin and wife, Judy, of St. Peter, Minn.; sisters, Mary Callison and husband, David, of Ventura and Teresa Trettin, of Des Moines; nephews and nieces, Patrick Trettin, Shane Callison and wife, Lynnae, Joel Callison, Alyssa Callison and Jared Callison; and fiancée Anne Pearson, of Maricopa, Ariz.

CLEAR LAKE — Roy Clifford Schumacher, 88, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (July 22, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Graveside memorial service, with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 East, Mason City, with the Rev. There will be a private family visitation. According to his wishes, cremation will take place.

Roy Clifford Schumacher was born on June 9, 1918, in Weir, Kansas, the son of Alton and Sarah (Gennett) Schumacher. He attended Ventura Public schools, graduating from Ventura High School.

He was united in marriage to Iona (Wilkinson) in June of 1939, in Mason City. She preceded him in death in 1968.

Roy was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving overseas in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his honorable discharge he came back to the North Iowa area and farmed south of Clear Lake. Roy worked for several years in the maintenance of roads and vehicles for Cerro Gordo County, and also was responsible for maintaining the city parks in Clear Lake until his retirement.

He enjoyed wood working, metal working, gardening, fishing, raising horses on his farm, reading Western books and watching Western movies.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clear Lake.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Sharyn Meyer, of Sheffield, and Lynda Ann Schumacher, of Travelers Rest, S.C.; seven grandchildren: Jim (Missy) Slocum, of Hampton, Jodi Cooke, of Ankeny, Gina (Tom) Boehmer, of Mason City, Roy Slocum, of Sheffield, Kim Frank, of Mason City, Kelley (Rick) Hammitt, of Garner, and Rob Meyer, of Sheffield; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; two special friends: Beverly Bartleson and her daughter, Penny, of Clear Lake, as well as other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Roy was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shirley Slocum; and three sisters.

William ‘Bill’ A. Anderson

MASON CITY — William “Bill” A. Anderson, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Newton and Grinnell, died Friday (July 21, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation was held after 4 p.m. on Monday, July 24, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made in William’s name and left at the funeral home.

 


Dale Edward Overbeck

MASON CITY — Dale Edward Overbeck, 44, of 1601 Ninth St. S.E. in Mason City, passed away Saturday (July 22, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Major Charles Wright, of the Mason City Salvation Army officiating. Interment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Dale E. Overbeck Memorial Fund.

Dale was born on Nov. 1, 1961, in Mason City, the son of Albert and Linda (Johnson) Overbeck. He attended school in Mason City.

Dale loved spending time watching Nascar racing on television, building model cars, riding go-carts, bicycle riding and bowling with his friends. He participated in the Special Olympics and won many awards.

Dale enjoyed listening to music and spending time with family and friends and especially with his brothers. On Dec 6, 2002, he was able to move into and live in his own apartment, which was a big milestone for Dale.

Dale is survived by two brothers, Wayne Overbeck, of Mason City, and Gary Overbeck and wife, Beth, of rural Rockwell; three sisters, Clara Gast and husband, Elden, of Klemme, Mary Burchardt, of Greensboro, N.C., and Sara Anstay, of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews, former sister-in-law, LaDell Overbeck, of Mason City; and special friend, Angie Waters.

Dale will be truly missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister-in-law Dixie Overbeck.

Bradly J. Kittleson

MASON CITY — Bradly J. Kittleson, 46, of 829 12th St. N.E., died Saturday (July 22, 2006) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with Pastor Paul Nelson officiating. Private family inurnment services will take place in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth at a later date.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to the Bradly J. Kittleson Memorial Fund.

Brad was born on Feb. 7, 1960, in Mason City, the son of Nels and Deloris (Birch) Kittleson. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1978. Brad was a carpenter by trade, having worked for Henkel Construction Company as well as many other projects in the area.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Brad was a hockey and race car enthusiast and enjoyed singing and spending time with his two sons.

Brad is survived by his sons, Cody and Travis; step-daughter, Rosalie Horsfall; mother, Deloris Kittleson, of Mason City; grandmother, Dorothy Birch, of Mason City; brother, Bruce Kittleson and wife, Michele, of Osage; nephews, Jonathan and Jake Kittleson, of Osage; niece, Megan Kittleson, of Osage; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brad was preceded in death by his father, Nels; grandfather, Dale L. Birch; paternal grandparents, Clarence and Clara Kittleson; and sister, Tammie.
