Betty Jean (Webb) Underwood

MASON CITY — Betty Jean (Webb) Underwood, 81, of Mason City, died Saturday (July 1, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon Seda, the Rev. Ray Higgins, and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. followed by a rosary.

Betty Jean (Webb) Underwood was born on May 13, 1925, in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Archie and Thelma (Ramsey) Webb. She attended and graduated from Coin High School in Coin, Iowa.

Betty was united in marriage to Robert Underwood on April 3, 1945, at St. Clair’s Catholic Church in Clarinda, Iowa. After their marriage, Betty continued to work in civil service until after the war.

In 1946, the family moved to Mason City where Betty began working for Mercy Hospital. Betty loved and enjoyed caring for her patients at Mercy and was a caregiver for 29 years. After her retirement, she continued to love and care for other people doing home health care in Mason City.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, and flowers, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren and going to their activities.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City and the church circle.

Betty was blessed because of her faith in God. She found happiness in love and devotion to her family.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert “Bob” Underwood, of Mason City; her children, Bob and his wife, Karol Underwood, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Michael and his wife, Sharon Underwood, of Forest Lake, Minn., David and his wife, DeeDee Underwood, of Des Moines, and Diane and her husband, Kim Servantez, of Mason City; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bob and his wife, Betty Webb, of Clarksville, Tenn., Archie and his wife, Emma Webb, of Jacksonville, Fla., Ronald Webb of Clarksville, Tenn., and Darrel and his wife, Leslie Webb, of Mulberry, Fla.; one sister, Hazel Albert, of Des Moines; as well as other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dennis L. Bohnsack

MASON CITY — Dennis L. Bohnsack, 61, of Mason City, died Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.

Martin Bert Nieman

BRITT — Martin Bert Nieman, 86, of Britt, passed away on Monday (July 3, 2006) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services for Martin Nieman will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Woden Christian Reformed Church, rural Woden, with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating. Burial will be at Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Martin, the son of Albert and Eva Borchers Nieman, was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Kanawha. He was baptized and a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. He attended country schools of Amsterdam Township through eighth grade. He then helped his father on the family farm northeast of Kanawha.

Martin enlisted in the United States Army in March 1941 and proudly served his country with the 133rd Infantry Division during World War II while stationed in Ireland, Italy and Africa. Martin received the Purple Heart medal for injuries he received in April 1944 in Italy and was honorably discharged in August 1945. Following his discharge, Martin again farmed northeast of Kanawha.

On Nov. 25, 1955, Martin married Joyce Vander Ploeg at the home of Joyce’s parents in Holland, Mich. In March 1956, they moved to their farm northwest of Britt. Martin and Joyce retired to their home in Britt in 1996.

Martin was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church where he served on the church council and various committees.

He loved farming and enjoyed watching sports, gardening, carpentry and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; and three children, Karen (Pat) George of Lakeville, Minn., Jill of Lakeville, Minn., and Jim (Julie) of Kanawha; seven grandchildren, Christopher George, Benjamin, Courtney, Stephanie, Michael, Isaac, and Emily Nieman; sisters-in-law, Delia Mouw of Zeeland, Mich., and Lillian Vander Ploeg of Kanawha; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sisters and their spouses, Grace (Ben) Blank, Tina (Edd) Luppen, Casper (Tillie) Nieman, John (June) Nieman, Ed (Dorothy) Nieman and Jennie (John) Eekhoff; and brothers-in-law, Harold Mouw and Clarence Vander Ploeg.

Leonard Wiegmann

DUMONT — Leonard Wiegmann, 89, of Dumont, passed away Monday (July 3, 2006) at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Pastor Jeffrey A. Blank officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, July 6, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.

Leonard was born on March 2, 1917, the son of Conrad and Sarah (Wessels) Wiegmann. He received his education at rural country schools in the Bristow area. Leonard was in the United States Army from 1941-1945, during which he served a tour of duty in the Philippines during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Kramer on Oct. 18, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo. To this union five children were born.

Leonard worked as a hired farm hand until entering the military. After his return, he began farming in the Bristow area where he farmed until he retired. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, baking, having coffee with neighbors, working in his tool shop and helping others. After retirement, he loved going to go-kart and stock car races.

Leonard was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison.

Leonard is survived by his five children, Nadonne (Lenis) Buseman of Charles City, Earl (Pam) Wiegmann of Dumont, Ronald (Linda) Wiegmann of Mason City, Rhonda (Jim) Howe of Nora Springs, and Jolene Wiegmann of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren, Steve (Lorie) Buseman, Duane (Billi) Buseman, Shelly Buseman and fiance, Jason Parson, Amy Wiegmann (Jake Feuerhelm), Carla (Adam) Holm, Cory (Sara) Wiegmann, Troy (April) Wiegmann, Tami Wiegmann (Tony Pals), Jodi (Kevin) Willemsen, Tracy (Tim) Anderson and Dustin Howe; 18 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Krull of Greene, Irene Harlan of Iowa Falls, and Darlene (Tootie) Benken of Morrison; and sister-in-law, Edna Schrage, of Allison.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; his parents, one brother, three sisters; twin great-granddaughters and two nephews.

Denzil W. Jones

MASON CITY — Denzil W. Jones, 72, of 1014 17th St. N.E., died Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at the Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. S.W., with the Rev. Larry Day officiating. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Columbarium.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the Free Methodist Church.

Denzil Wayne Jones was born Jan. 26, 1934, in Sheffield, the son of Lee and Maude (Titus) Jones. Denzil attended and graduated from Sheffield schools. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and served his country in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1954.

He married Donna Boyd on Dec. 5, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1957, he moved to Mason City where he worked various construction jobs until beginning work with Decker’s where he worked for 18 years. He then went to work for Cerro Gordo County Care where he worked as a maintenance supervisor for 19 years until his retirement in 1996.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was an avid gardener. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. He was a member of the North Iowa Retriever’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Mason City; sons, Dave Jones and wife, Beth, of Mason City, and Dallas Jones and wife, Ann, of Mason City; grandchildren, Katie, Jake, Ian, Alex, Hannah and Tanner Jones, all of Mason City; sister, Marguerite Tidman, of Hampton; and brother, Joseph Jones, of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen, Ellen and Marcella Jones and Ramona Walker; brothers, John Paul Jones and Marshall E. Jones.

Emerson Cahalan

MASON CITY — Emerson Cahalan, 82, of 21 Mission Drive, died Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Emerson Cahalan Memorial Fund, in care of the family.

Emerson was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Cartersville, Iowa, the son of Harry and Hannah (O’Connor) Cahalan. He was a 1941 graduate of Rockwell High School.

He served in the armed forces with the 4th Marine Division from 1943 through 1945 and saw action in the battles of Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima.

On May 4, 1949, Emerson was united in marriage to Rosemary McClung at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. They farmed in the rural Cartersville and Mason City areas until retiring in 1985.

He was a former member and trustee at St. John’s Catholic Church, Cartersville, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was an ASCS committeeman.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary; four children, Steve (Sally) Cahalan of LaCrosse, Wis., Bill Cahalan of Fairmont, Minn., Rosann (Mark) Boyle of Mason City, and Chris (John) Ressler Sr. of Mason City; five grandchildren, John (Krysia) Ressler Jr. of Beach Park, Ill., Tim Ressler and his fiancee, (Sarah Torgeson), of Mason City, Mindy Boyle and her fiance, Joel Heinz, of Cedar Falls, David Boyle of Mason City and Thomas Cahalan; and one sister, Mary Lou Anton, of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Romona Smith and Dorothy Cahalan; brothers, Paul, William “Billy,” and a twin brother, Joseph; and many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Dr. Lloyd “Gil” Jones of Bremen, Ga.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Scott of Jackson, Mich., and Jacqueline Jones of Bremen, Ga.; one great-grandchild, Joshua T. Jones, of Bremen, Ga.; two sisters, LoRee Kulhavy, of Mason City, and Marjorie Hansen, of Tacoma, Wash.; one brother, Harlan Alitz, and wife, Iris, of Mason City.

Dennis Lee Bohnsack

MASON CITY — Dennis Lee Bohnsack, 61, died Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Dennis was born on April 5, 1945, in Mason City, the son of Walter and Agnes Bohnsack. He graduated from Mason City High School in May 1963. Dennis was in the United States Navy and served from 1963 to 1967. He was very proud to serve his country.

Dennis was united in marriage to Loyola (Sherry) Wendel on Jan. 27, 1968. Two children were born to them. Shannon Bohnsack was born Aug. 31, 1972, and Scott Bohnsack was born Feb. 12, 1980.

Dennis worked at and retired from Lehigh Cement Co. as an operator in the control room. He liked to play cards and enjoyed fishing, cooking and spending time with his friends and family. He was also known to many friends as co-workers as “Bony” or “Bonz.” Dennis was often there to offer a helping hand and crack a quick joke.

Dennis is survived by his two children, Shannon Foster, of Mason City, and Scott Bohnsack, of Mason City; son-in-law, Russell Foster; three grandchildren, Steffen Lee Foster, Bryce Alexander Foster, Serena LaRué Foster; brothers, Gary Bohnsack and wife, Lois, of North Carolina, Merlin Bohnsack and wife, Alice, of Mason City; sisters, Ramona Morse of Mason City, Marilyn Lankford of Mason City, Donna Brummund and husband, Van, of Mason City; and dear friend, Robert Askildson.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Agnes Bohnsack; brother, Dale Bohnsack; and sisters, Marion Billings and Judy Dewitt.

Nicklos J. Homerding

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Nicklos J. Homerding, 77, of El Reno, Okla., passed away on Friday (June 30, 2006) at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City after a short illness.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, July 15, at Huber-Benson Chapel in El Reno, Okla.

Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma City Zoo or Pets and People.

Nicklos was born Dec. 3, 1928, at Mason City. He was a resident of El Reno, returning to Oklahoma upon retirement in 1991. He served in El Reno and several other locations across the United States while with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where he was a senior lieutenant.

Nick was an Army veteran of World War II and Korea. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mason City, the American Legion and the V.F.W.

He married Mary Ouverson on Oct. 19, 1951, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, Mark Homerding and wife, Gail, of Yukon; his daughter, Sharon Widmire, of Euless, Texas; and sister, Mildred Spencer, of Grand Prairie, Texas. Nick and Mary have three grandchildren, Rick Widmire, Jessica Homerding and Max Homerding.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicklos J. and Carrie (Peterson) Homerding; son, Kevin Homerding; grandson, Dustin Homerding; and sisters, Frances Homerding and Zola Bohnsack.

Dorothy L. Chesnut

CHARLES CITY — Dorothy L. Chesnut, 91, a resident of Port Charles Assisted Living, Charles City, died Wednesday (July 5, 2006) at Chautauqua Guest Home following a brief illness.

Dorothy Lois Chesnut was born June 9, 1915, the beloved daughter of Roy and Clio (Usher) Parker in Charles City. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1933. She married Harold Chesnut on April 10, 1937, in Charles City.

She was employed for five years at the local F.W. Woolworth Store. She was a friend of Trinity United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed wintering in Tucson, Ariz., as well as spending her summers at her cottage in Harper’s Ferry on the Mississippi.

Survivors include her niece, Ramona Linebaugh Springer, of Belleville, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Chesnut; and sister, Doris (Parker) Springer and husband, Harold.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dorothy’s honor may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 1003 Gilbert St., Charles City, IA 50616.

Joshua Ryan Kuhlmann

NORTHWOOD — Joshua Ryan Kuhlmann, 17, of Northwood, died Monday (July 3, 2006) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a long, courageous battle with muscular dystrophy surrounded by his loving family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 10, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen of First Lutheran Church and the Rev. Robert Luebbert of the Northwood Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church.

The family of Joshua Ryan Kuhlmann has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Joshua Ryan Memorial Fund, which has been established at the Farmers State Bank, 99 N. Seventh St., Northwood, Iowa.

Joshua Ryan Kuhlmann was born on Dec. 21, 1988, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Gail Kuhlmann and Stephen Ingersoll. He attended and received his education in the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools and would have been a senior this year.

Despite the physical challenges of muscular dystrophy, Joshua was on the high school honor roll. While at school, Joshua belonged to a chess club. Joshua enjoyed immensely all the festivities at the junior-senior prom, his close friends, especially Zack Willis who he considered a brother, and giving advice to his younger brother, Cody.

He enjoyed playing Nintendo video games, cards, checkers and going to the library.

Joshua was a very well liked and admired by his classmates who insisted that he attend the junior-senior prom. Joshua was a person who brought out the best in everyone and always had a smile for you.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Gail Kuhlmann of Northwood and Stephen Ingersoll of Plymouth; his brothers, Gerad Kuhlmann and his fiancee, Jessica Freerksen, of Northwood, Cody Cox of Northwood and his brother-in-soul, Zack Willis, of Northwood; his grandfathers, Gaylord LaVon Kuhlmann from Northwood, residing in Manly, and William Ingersoll of Old Town, Fla.; his aunts, Linda Carlson of Northwood, and her fiance, Bob Link, of Mason City, Kathy Rush and her husband, Kurt, of Mason City, Sandra Jacobson and her husband, David, of Dillon, Iowa, and Jody Damman and her husband, Robert, of Statler, Iowa; his uncles, Steve Carlson of Manly and William Ingersoll Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Moline, Ill., and Curtis Ingersoll and his wife, Ruth, of Hooperville, Wis.; two special nephews, Dylon Freerksen and Collin Kuhlmann; his cousins, Amber Carlson and her daughter, Trinity, Laura Carlson, Garrett Carlson and Aaron and Jordan Rush; as well as many other cousins and many friends.

Alan D. Thompson “Big Al” passed quietly away Wednesday (July 5, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a brief but very hard-fought battle with cancer.

Al was born on July 17, 1960, in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Forry and Barb (Ewing) Thompson. He received his education in the Forest City school system, graduating from Forest City High School in 1979.

After graduation, Al worked at Winnebago Industries with the grounds crew in the Maintenance Department until the time of his death. Al had a special passion for working outside. You could always see him mowing a yard, tilling a garden, cutting down a tree. Though he tried to make a living doing this, most times he simply did it for the fun or to help someone out in need, never thinking twice about the money he wasn’t making.

Those left to cherish his memory and spirit are his parents, Forry and Barb Thompson, of Forest City; two brothers, Dave (Michelle) Thompson of Forest City and Carl (Jill) Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a sister, Robin (Tom) McCloskey, of Forest City. Nieces and nephews include: Hannah, Noah, Connor Thompson and Drew Humphrey of Forest City, Hillary and Amelia Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Billy McCloskey of Forest City. Robert Vernon Ristau

THORNTON — Robert Vernon Ristau, 62, of Thornton, passed away on Thursday (July 6, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City from pulmonary fibrosis.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 10, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 301 Main St. in Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Bob was born on Sept. 1, 1943, in Garner, to Vernon and Ruth (Geilenfeldt) Ristau. Bob graduated from Thornton High School in 1961. He attended Mason City Junior College and later attended Iowa State University.

In 1964, he was inducted into the Armed Forces as a member of the Iowa National Guard. He began his career as a draftsman at Fishers in Marshalltown. He later relocated to Thornton where he began his career as a farmer.

He was united in marriage to Dee Clark on Jan. 27, 1968, in Forest City. The couple has three children.

Bob was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, participating in several roles over the years. He was also a member of the Meservey-Thornton School Board for 20 years and served as a member of the Thornton Co-op.

He enjoyed farming with Ivan Meints, raising livestock, blackjack at the casino, and collecting “antiques” such as records, camels and yardsticks. Bob also enjoyed big band music and watching Jim Cramer every evening on television. Most importantly, he treasured time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years and their three children, son, Troy Ristau and wife, Tonya, of Chaska, Minn., son, Todd Ristau and wife, Shari, of Mason City, and daughter, Traci Ristau (Ludwig) and husband, Allan, of Cedar Falls. Grandchildren include: Tyler and Spencer Ristau, Taryn Ristau and Samual Ludwig. Siblings include: brother, Donald Ristau, of Garner, sister, Linda Eggleston and Gary Iverson, of Albert Lea, Minn.; sister-in-law, Elaine Ristau, of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Gerald; and a brother, Paul.

Merle Giesking

TITONKA — Funeral services for Merle Giesking, 70, of Titonka, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Titonka with Pastor Arlen Lloyd officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Titonka.

Merle Gene Giesking was born Aug. 3, 1935, at rural Titonka, to Carl and Hilka (Pannkuk) Giesking. Merle graduated from Titonka High School in 1953, and he began farming and raising turkeys.

He was united in marriage to Alice Meyer on June 7, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Titonka. In 1970, he also became employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City. He worked there from 1970 until retirement in 1997. Merle continued farming until 2001.

Merle was a “master gardener,” enjoyed fishing, collecting postcards and antiques. He also enjoyed traveling, sports, including being a NASCAR fan as well as an avid Hawkeye fan. Most importantly, Merle was a kind and generous man, even tempered and always showed respect to others. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Merle was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he had served and was currently serving on the church council and was the Benevolence Treasurer. He had also worked on the Titonka Bicentennial Committee.

Merle died on Tuesday (July 4, 2006) as a result of a tractor accident. He was 70 years old.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Titonka; son, Bruce Giesking, and wife, Pam, of Tampa, Fla.; daughter, Lori Cink, and husband, Tom, of Wesley; and son, Scott Giesking, and wife, Priscilla, of Wesley Chapel, Fla. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; sister, Clara Mayland, of Titonka, sister, Vera Ostermann, of Elmore, Minn., sister, Leona Schmidt, and husband, Lowell, of Mason City; and brother, Carl “Butch” Giesking, and wife, Dorothy, of Titonka; along with sister-in-law, Julia Giesking, of Buffalo Center.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Erwin “Shorty,” and wife, Phyllis Giesking, Lewis Giesking; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Ostermann and Henry “Hank” Mayland.

Marvin A. Zieman

MASON CITY — Marvin A. Zieman, 42, of Mason City, passed away Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at his home from heart complications.

Marvin Andrew Zieman was born on June 6, 1964, at Mason City, the son of Earl and Edna (Buseman) Zieman. Marvin graduated from Rockford High School in 1982. After completing high school, Marv began working at UNISYS in Clear Lake. While he worked at UNISYS, Marvin began furthering his education at NIACC and obtained certifications in the maintenance and electrical fields. After UNISYS closed, Marvin worked for Armour/Decker meatpacking plant, IMI Cornelius, and for the past 10 years at Curries in Mason City as an electrician. Marv loved to work. He enjoyed being around his co-workers and giving everyone a hand.

Marvin’s hobbies included collecting tractors, hunting and fishing, smoke BBQ, being most famous for his BBQ brisket, and spending time with his friends and neighbors. He liked to go to annual Pheasant Forever and Duck’s Unlimited gatherings.

Marvin’s true passion was his son, Justin. He would help Justin and his Boy Scout troop on projects and outings. Marvin and Justin would spend time together working in the shop on various projects or going fishing. They had a special relationship and were buddies.

Marvin had a huge heart and is going to be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Marvin is survived by his son, Justin Zieman, Wake Forrest, N.C.; former wife, Susan Corell Hrubetz, Wake Forrest; stepson, Alexander Morris, Mason City; parents, Earl and Edna Zieman, Rockwell; brother, Dan Zieman, Rockwell; two uncles, Don (Jean) Buseman, Rockford, and Ron Buseman, Mason City; parents-in-law, Roger and Kathleen Corell, Mason City; sister and brother-in-law, Michele and Michael Howell, Huntsville, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, and lots of special friends.

Richard ‘Dick’ David Pierce

MASON CITY — Richard “Dick” David Pierce, 73, of Mason City, formerly of Rockwell, died Thursday (July 6, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, of complications from heart surgery.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday July 10, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with Pastor Paul Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Dick was born March 22, 1933, to David and Alphia (Bayliss) Pierce in Jackson, Minn. He attended school in Hanlontown. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

On July 21, 1962, Dick was united in marriage to Bonita “Bonnie” Faye Bergdale at the Kensett Lutheran Church.

Dick worked as a Volkswagen mechanic in Mason City and continued with his own car dealership both in Rockwell and Mason City. He worked for the Rockwell Elevator and later became self-employed owning and operating Pierce Painting and Wall Covering with his wife, Bonnie.

He was a long-time member of Rockwell American Legion, former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, and a current member of St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City. He served as a trustee and was a past president of the trustees and also served on the stewardship committee. As his grandchildren grew, he helped start the youth program at the church.

Dick was an avid car person, having restored a ’59 Chevy Impala, ’66 Datsun Roadster Convertible and was in the process of restoring a ’58 Ford Retractable. He loved showing his cars and received many trophies.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Bonnie Pierce, Mason City; seven children, Alan David Pierce, Mason City, Janny Lee Marvin, Mason City, Julie Ann (Stephen) Nelson, Burlington, Wis., Pattie Marie (James) Mills, Northwood, Douglas Ray (Teresa) Pierce, Floyd, David Allen Pierce, Pequot, Minn., and Cindy LouAnn (Rick) Cooper, Mason City; 10 grandchildren; Daisy; and four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Loretta (Paul) Palmer, Joplin, Mo., Rose Dishong, Fairmont, Minn., Phyllis (Marvin) Diekhuis, Garner, Faye (Chuck) Greiman, Garner; and three brothers, Ted (Sue) Pierce, Mason City, David (Rose) Pierce, Waterloo, and Frank Pierce, Thompson.

Those left to cherish his memory and spirit are his parents, Forry and Barb Thompson, of Forest City; two brothers, Dave (Michelle) Thompson of Forest City and Carl (Jill) Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a sister, Robin (Tom) McCloskey, of Forest City. Nieces and nephews include: Hannah, Noah, Connor Thompson and Drew Humphrey of Forest City, Hillary and Amelia Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Billy McCloskey of Forest City. Also left to remember Al is a long list of friends and sidekicks.

NEW HAVEN — Florence B. Wolske, 95, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Saturday (July 8, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa.

A graveside inurnment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating.

Florence was born Oct. 18, 1910, in Menomonie, Wis., the daughter of Adolph and Christina (Vigerust) Wolske.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1928. She was a long-time resident of rural New Haven.

Florence is survived by her sister, Maxine Wilke, Oregon, Wis., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Harry “Buck’ Wolske, Alice Cookman, Helen Nowakoski, Margaret “Muggs” Dunbar, Jim Wolske, Pete Wolske, Robert “Willie” Wolske, Dorothy Wolske and one nephew, Robert Wolske.
