Finger, Marjorie J.  

CHARLES CITY - Marjorie J. Finger, 88, of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, passed away Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastors Dennis Niezwagg and David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Casketbearers will be Larry Stock, Darwin Stock, Darel Jurgens, Richard Pagel, Joe Pagel and Duane Pagel.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hugeback-Chenoweth Funeral Home, 319 Main Street, in Nashua, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main Street, Charles City, IA 50616.

Marjorie Jane Finger was born on Oct. 23, 1917, in Butler County, the daughter of George and Jennie (Weichers) Jurgens. She attended rural Butler County schools near Clarksville.

She was united in marriage to Karl Finger on Dec. 27, 1936, in Clarksville. To this union two sons were born.

They lived in Janesville and Waterloo before moving to Floyd County where they farmed and were in the poultry business for more than 25 years. They retired and moved to Nashua.

Marjorie is a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dorcas Circle, and served as kitchen chairman for several years. She was also a member of Riverton Homemakers and helped with 4-H Fair food stand. Marjorie enjoyed playing cards and going on fishing trips. She loved caring for and being with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Gary (Carol) Finger, of Charles City; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Finger, of Iowa City; six grandchildren: Leslie Finger, Greg Finger, Lesa Finger, Jeffrey Finger, LeAnn Zimmer and Jody Davis; also eight great-grandchildren.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Karl, on May 31, 1992; one son, Alton (Stretch) Finger; her parents; two brothers: Joe and Jerry Jurgens; four sisters: twins, Corrine and Colleen Jurgens, Christina Stock, and Anna Pagel; and a great-granddaughter, Danielle Lee Escalante.

NORTHWOOD - Lena "Fay" Hennigar, 69, of 903 9th Ave. N., Northwood, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m.Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later time at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton, Okla.

Visitation will be one hour before the service on Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society.

Fay was born on Oct. 2, 1936, in Indiahoma, Okla. the daughter of James D. and Delsie (Franks) Morrison. She graduated from Indiahoma High School.

Fay married Stanley Hennigar on April 5, 1956, in Oklahoma. They lived in Colorado and then moved to Manly, Iowa, and lived there until she moved to her present home in Northwood in 2001.

She worked for Winnebago Industries for about twenty-five years until she retired in 2000.

Fay was well known for her famous Saturday night tacos. She enjoyed bowling, reading, being with her friends and family and especially traveling to be with them. She was also an avid gardener.

She is survived by her five children: Dennis Hennigar and his wife, Jene, The Colony, Texas; Doreen Jacks and her husband, Mike, Greeley, Colo.; Gary Dean Hennigar and his wife, Kim, Northwood; Sherry Olson and her husband, Kory, Northwood; and Sheila Ketler and her husband, Richard, Dallas, Texas; thirteen grandchildren: Kris Jacks, Kortnie Jacks, Bryan Koster, Jayson Olson, Shayne Olson, Pierce Tuttle, Paige Tuttle, Bryson Hennigar, Tyler Julson, Hannah Hennigar, Hunter Hennigar, Derek Hennigar and David Hennigar; two sisters: Wynola Taylor, Lawton, Okla., and Delores Dye and her husband, David, Lakewood, Calif.; and two brothers: J.D. Morrison and his wife Ingrid, Bethany, Okla., and Keith Morrison and his wife, Helen, Edmond, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth Morrison; sister, Mildred Ballard; and a daughter, Shelly Hennigar.

COULTER - Caroline "Cal" Magdalina Bertha Dohrmann Jensen, 91, of rural Coulter, died Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton. Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Hampton, with Rev. Mary Peterson officiating.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave. E., in Hampton.

CHESTER - Memorial service for Janice R. Leist will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minn., with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. There will be a private family interment.

Janice R. Leist, 66, of Chester, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at her home.

Janice Ruth Lawson was born on Oct. 7, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa, to Thomas and Marjorie (Swancutt) Lawson. She graduated from LeRoy High School in LeRoy, Minn.

On Nov. 30, 1971, Janice married Doug Leist in Fillmore, Minn. Janice worked as a postal clerk in Grand Meadow, Minn., for 17 years.

She was a member of LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church and belonged to the church circle.

Janice loved spending time with her family and friends. She also loved being in her flower gardens, vegetable gardens, quilting, reading, and she had a love for nature.

Janice is survived by her husband, Doug Leist, of Chester; six children, Cindy (Chris) Christensen of Riceville, Suzanne (Rick) Brown of Austin, Minn., Rusty (Gina) Taylor of Riceville, Sherry Roehr of Riceville, Terry (Carol) Leist of Singapore, and Tim (Rachel) Leist of Iowa City; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; her mother, Marge, of Spring Valley, Minn.; three sisters, Jeanette (Bud Mlenar) Baker of Spring Valley, Minn., Shirley (Kent) Flikki of Minnesota City, Minn., and Diane Ellingson of Hudson, Wis.; and four brothers, Thomas (Fran) Lawson of Eyota, Minn., Gary (Diane) Lawson of Reads Landing, Minn., David (Julie) Lawson of LeRoy, Minn., and John (Darla Erb) Lawson of Menominee, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas.

There will be no visitation.

Mennenga, Minnie
 
BELMOND - Minnie Mennenga, age 94, of Belmond, died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at the Belmond Medical Center Hospice Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. The Reverend Rob Ford will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at church Wednesday.

Minnie Mennenga was born on July 30, 1911, to Dick and Elizabeth (Kuper) Pals, on a farm east of Belmond, Iowa. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

She worked out of the home, being a housekeeper for other area families for a number of years.

On March 5, 1936, she married Carl Mennenga at the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage. They farmed 37 years east of Belmond, retired, and moved to Belmond in 1973. During their time on the farm, their marriage was blessed with five children, including an infant daughter; daughters, Carol, Betty and Velda, and a son, Douglas.

Minnie was an active member of the Immanuel Reformed Church, where she taught Catechism and was a member of the Ladies' Guild. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and the Over 60's Club. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and playing cards with family and friends. She and Carl enjoyed fishing in Minnesota several times a year.

Being a loving grandmother, her grandchildren will remember her babysitting and playing games with them. Her family will always cherish the fond memories of her home made pies and cakes.

Those left to cherish her memories are daughters, Carol (William) Lockett, Belmond, and Velda (Gary) Steenblock, Kanawha; a son, Douglas (Diana) Mennenga, Clemmons, N.C.; 10 grandchildren: Kim (Jon) Gifford, Karleen (Mike) Fournier, Karmen (Josh Maros) Dahl, Kristine (Ken) Paxton, Annette (Mark) Greenwood, Dawn (Jon) Eckhoff, Lisa (Mike) Ver Helst, Kevin (Shery) Steenblock, Tammy (Bill) Freerks, and Todd (Dawn) Mennenga; 13 great-grandchildren: Katie Gifford, Alex Gifford, Merissa Meints, Austin Meints, Drew Dahl, Luke Paxton, Halie Greenwood, Brooke Greenwood, Grant Eckhoff, Emily Eckhoff, Jacob Ver Helst, Dalton Mennenga, and Danielle Mennenga; four step-grandchildren: Tony Bonjour, Racheal (Chad) Olson, Brandon Bonjour, and Whitney Bonjour; seven step- great-grandchildren: Justin Fournier, Whitney Fournier, Lukas Maros, Liam Maros, Garrin Bonjour, Ethan Olson, and Jase Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Carl, in 1998; daughter, Betty Wenzel; an infant daughter; and a great-granddaughter, Morgan; six sisters; and five brothers.

IOWA FALLS - Kenneth Muller, 71, of Iowa Falls died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

As per his request, there will be no formal services for Kenneth Muller.

Theobald, Clem
 
STACYVILLE - Clem Theobald, passed away Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center at the age of 85.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Visitation Church in Stacyville with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Clem, son of Thomas and Gertrude Theobald, was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Meyer. From the time he finished school in Meyer, Clem farmed east of Stacyville. He married Alvina Schrandt of Stacyville in 1942 and together they operated the Theobald family farm until 1984. They then retired to their home in Stacyville.

Clem was an enthusiastic card player and also enjoyed bowling and reading, especially his two daily newspapers. Clem and Alvina enjoyed many fishing trips with friends and family to the lakes of Minnesota. Clem was a 4-H leader and also served as an elevator board member and in the Knights of Columbus for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alvina; two brothers, Paul and Walter; five sisters, Mary, Isabelle, Rosella, Marcella and Sister Angelita; and one grandson.

Clem is survived by his seven children, Ron (Valerie) Theobald of Burke, Va., Sue (Verlyn) Mullenbach of Stacyville, Mike Theobald of Oskaloosa, Linda (Rob) Reding of Houston, Texas, Jane (Denton) Voss of Leawood, Kan., Ed (Brenda) Theobald of Stacyville, and Tom (Darla) Theobald of Mankato, Minn.; sister, Helen Smith of Rochester, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Thomson, Lowell Estel
 
MASON CITY - Lowell Estel Thomson, 74, of 65 West View Drive, Mason City, Iowa died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and then one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Lowell E. Thomson Memorial Fund.

Lowell was born on March 2, 1931, on his grandfather Lester Knight's farm near Viola, Iowa, the son of Estel and Leota Mae (Knight) Thomson.

He attended school in several towns where his father taught, graduating from Kanawha High School in 1948, where he played baseball as a short-stop. His team won the state fall baseball title. He attended Britt Junior College and transferred to Iowa State Teachers College where he played two years of varsity baseball as an outfielder. He obtained a master's degree in secondary education in 1961, and a master's degree in physical education in 1967 at Greeley, Colo.

He was one of the first recipients of the Kennedy Family Special Olympics Fellowship Grant.

He taught and coached for many years at Ledyard, Plymouth, and Mason City public schools, retiring in 1986.

His overall baseball record was 354-201. He won six district titles, three sub-states and was state runner-up once.

Lowell served as a high school umpire/referee from 1958-1972. Later, he coached and umpired Little League baseball. He coached in the Second All-Star Series and was named Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year in 1980.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Estel, and uncle, George, he was inducted into the Iowa Coaches Hall of Fame for baseball on Feb. 6, 1999.

Lowell married Maryen (Mernie) Johnson on Dec. 22, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1974. He married Meryleen Mitchell on Sept. 15, 2000, at the International Peace Gardens.

He enjoyed playing golf, fishing in Canada, attending athletic events, having coffee with his fishing buddies at Country Kitchen and spending his winters in Weslaco, Texas.

Lowell is survived by his wife Meryleen, Virden, Manitoba, Canada; mother, Leota Mae Thomson, Lake Mills; four children: Leslie (Bill) Hoover, Loudon, Tenn., Robert (Sandy)Thomson, Cumming Ga., LuAnn (Mark) Worden, North Liberty, Iowa, and William (Karen) Thomson, Mason City; five grandchildren: Kris (Mindy) Meyer, Knoxville, Tenn., Sarah (Daniel) Watkins, Knoxville, Tenn., Jeb Hoover, Loudon, Tenn., Bryce (Stephanie) Thomson, Spring, Texas, and Ryan Thomson, Cumming, Ga.; three step-children: Bob (Linda) Lane, Max (Lorna) Lane and Valerie (Gerry) Sliwa of Canada; five step-grandchildren: Kim and Monica Hoover, and Adam, Ryan, and Ben Harrer; three brothers: David (Rita) Thomson, Overland Park, Kan., Donald (Kay) Thomson, Stevensville, Md., and Lyle (Orloue) Thomson, Lake Mills. He is also survived by several special nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and first wife, Mernie.

MASON CITY - Paul Dean Berrier, 76, of Mason City died Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. Ervin Linde of the Body Ministry of Christ Church in Charles City officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Body Ministry of Christ Church, of which Paul was a faithful attendee.

Paul Dean Berrier was born on Oct. 28, 1929, in Mason City, son of Charles and Lecie (Fletcher) Berrier.

Paul attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School.

Paul dedicated his life to the care of his family, caring for both his parents and his twin sister, Pauline, who died on Feb. 8, 1996.

He worked for Decker's for 30 years, retiring in 1984. Paul was a member of the Body of Christ Church in Charles City and enjoyed spending time with children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lecie Berrier; and his twin sister, Pauline J. Berrier.

Book, Douglas W.
 
FOREST CITY - Douglas W. Book, 58, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at his home in Forest City.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hansen Fieldhouse in Forest City with the Rev. Jerry Blake of St. James Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour before the service on Friday at the fieldhouse.

Douglas Wayne Book was born in Forest City, Iowa, on Nov. 3, 1947, the son of Olaf and Ellen (Homes) Book. He grew up in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1965.

He attended Waldorf College before being hired as a full-time patrolman in 1968. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in January 1969, and took a leave of absence from the department in 1972 to complete his bachelor's degree at Northeast Missouri State University.

On Dec. 3, 1973, the Forest City Council voted to hire Book as its police chief, replacing retiring chief Harvey Hosier. Less than a month later, he was sworn in to a job he would never leave.

In addition to heading up the North Central Narcotics Task Force for the past 10 years, Doug, at various times in his career, served as the chairman of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Board, was president of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers, a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, the Narcotic Enforcement Council, the Drug Abuse Prevention & Violent Crime Council, the Drug Abuse Prevention and Education Council, the Public Safety Committee of the Governor's Commission on Down-Sizing State Government, and worked with the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team for Emergency Personnel that helped New York City police officers deal with issues in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

He held instructor ratings in the following: Law Enforcement Firearms, Chemical Munitions, Rifle, Striking Instruments, and DARE. He previously taught Law Enforcement classes at Waldorf College and was a guest instructor at the Basic Recruit Class of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

Doug is remembered as a dedicated professional who cared deeply for his fellow officers and his community.

He is survived by his father, Olaf Book, of Forest City; his uncles, Albert and Dell Book of Forest City, Harold Book of Fertile, Bud Homes of Oregon, Bob Homes of Arizona and Harold Reese of Colo, Iowa; an aunt, Violet Charlson of Red Wing, Minn.; many cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Book; two aunts and four uncles.

Crandall, Sterle E. "Red"
 
MASON CITY - Sterle "Red" E. Crandall, 85, of 1023 N. Carolina Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Friends may greet the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Following the visitation, according to Sterle's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Sterle "Red" E. Crandall was born on Jan. 12, 1921, in Hampton, son of George and Gladys (Oleson) Crandall. Red graduated from Hampton High School, where he was very active in all sports. After high school, Red worked at Farmers Hybrid Seed Corn Co. and the Milwaukee Railroad Co.

In 1940, Red was united in marriage to Dorothy Conway. In 1944, Red was drafted into the armed services and was later discharged in 1946. Returning home, Red returned to work for the Milwaukee Railroad Co. as a wrecking derrick engineer.

In 1954, he left the railroad and started working for the City of Mason City in the Park Department. He helped develop many of the parks that are now in existence in Mason City, such as Fredrick Hanford, Georgia Hanford, MacNider Woods Campground and Highland Park Golf Course.

In 1965, Red was appointed the city forester and in cooperation with Iowa State University helped save more than 22,000 elm trees from the Dutch Elm disease that struck the area. He also was one of the original planners and developers of the beautification program, planting many flowers and trees in Mason City. While he was city forester, Red enjoyed meeting with clubs and groups, explaining control and maintaining successful tree programs. During this time he made many friends throughout the North Iowa area.

Due to heart complications, Red retired from the city in 1979. For 14 years, Red and Dorothy wintered in Green Valley, Ariz., and spent summers visiting their children and traveling all over the United States.

Red enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, remodeling, cabinet making, and designing and constructing furniture.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hampton. Red was also a past member of the VFW, Elk's Lodge, and a charter member of the Evening Lion's Club.

Red will be greatly missed by his wife, Dorothy Crandall, of Mason City; four children, Marshall (Kay) Crandall of Joliet, Ill., Scott (Peg) Crandall of Greenville, S.C.; Kim Crandall of Davenport, and Cyndie (Pat) Whalen of Mason City; four grandchildren, Courtney (Bridget) Crandall, Chicago, Ill., Andrew (Lisa) Harden of Dubuque, Ashley (Bryan) Wilson of Austin, Minn., and Kate Crandall of Marietta, Ga.; one great-grandson, Isaac Harden, of Dubuque; one brother, Darrell Crandall, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys; and three brothers, LeRoy "Bud," Robert, and Max.

Marjorie Jane Finger was born on Oct. 23, 1917, in Butler County, the daughter of George and Jennie (Weichers) Jurgens. She attended rural Butler County schools near Clarksville.

She was united in marriage to Karl Finger on Dec. 27, 1936, in Clarksville. To this union two sons were born.

They lived in Janesville and Waterloo before moving to Floyd County where they farmed and were in the poultry business for more than 25 years. They retired and moved to Nashua.

Marjorie is a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dorcas Circle, and served as kitchen chairman for several years. She was also a member of Riverton Homemakers and helped with 4-H Fair food stand. Marjorie enjoyed playing cards and going on fishing trips. She loved caring for and being with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Gary (Carol) Finger, of Charles City; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Finger, of Iowa City; six grandchildren: Leslie Finger, Greg Finger, Lesa Finger, Jeffrey Finger, LeAnn Zimmer and Jody Davis; also eight great-grandchildren.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Karl, on May 31, 1992; one son, Alton (Stretch) Finger; her parents; two brothers: Joe and Jerry Jurgens; four sisters: twins, Corrine and Colleen Jurgens, Christina Stock, and Anna Pagel; and a great-granddaughter, Danielle Lee Escalante.

CHESTER - Memorial service for Janice R. Leist will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minn., with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. There will be a private family interment.

Janice R. Leist, 66, of Chester, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at her home.

Janice Ruth Lawson was born on Oct. 7, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa, to Thomas and Marjorie (Swancutt) Lawson. She graduated from LeRoy High School in LeRoy, Minn.

On Nov. 30, 1971, Janice married Doug Leist in Fillmore, Minn. Janice worked as a postal clerk in Grand Meadow, Minn., for 17 years.

She was a member of LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church and belonged to the church circle.

Janice loved spending time with her family and friends. She also loved being in her flower gardens, vegetable gardens, quilting, reading, and she had a love for nature.

Janice is survived by her husband, Doug Leist, of Chester; six children, Cindy (Chris) Christensen of Riceville, Suzanne (Rick) Brown of Austin, Minn., Rusty (Gina) Taylor of Riceville, Sherry Roehr of Riceville, Terry (Carol) Leist of Singapore, and Tim (Rachel) Leist of Iowa City; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; her mother, Marge, of Spring Valley, Minn.; three sisters, Jeanette (Bud Mlenar) Baker of Spring Valley, Minn., Shirley (Kent) Flikki of Minnesota City, Minn., and Diane Ellingson of Hudson, Wis.; and four brothers, Thomas (Fran) Lawson of Eyota, Minn., Gary (Diane) Lawson of Reads Landing, Minn., David (Julie) Lawson of LeRoy, Minn., and John (Darla Erb) Lawson of Menominee, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas.

BELMOND - Minnie Mennenga, age 94, of Belmond, died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at the Belmond Medical Center Hospice Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. The Reverend Rob Ford will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at church Wednesday.

Minnie Mennenga was born on July 30, 1911, to Dick and Elizabeth (Kuper) Pals, on a farm east of Belmond, Iowa. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

She worked out of the home, being a housekeeper for other area families for a number of years.

On March 5, 1936, she married Carl Mennenga at the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage. They farmed 37 years east of Belmond, retired, and moved to Belmond in 1973. During their time on the farm, their marriage was blessed with five children, including an infant daughter; daughters, Carol, Betty and Velda, and a son, Douglas.

Minnie was an active member of the Immanuel Reformed Church, where she taught Catechism and was a member of the Ladies' Guild. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and the Over 60's Club. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and playing cards with family and friends. She and Carl enjoyed fishing in Minnesota several times a year.

Being a loving grandmother, her grandchildren will remember her babysitting and playing games with them. Her family will always cherish the fond memories of her home made pies and cakes.

Those left to cherish her memories are daughters, Carol (William) Lockett, Belmond, and Velda (Gary) Steenblock, Kanawha; a son, Douglas (Diana) Mennenga, Clemmons, N.C.; 10 grandchildren: Kim (Jon) Gifford, Karleen (Mike) Fournier, Karmen (Josh Maros) Dahl, Kristine (Ken) Paxton, Annette (Mark) Greenwood, Dawn (Jon) Eckhoff, Lisa (Mike) Ver Helst, Kevin (Shery) Steenblock, Tammy (Bill) Freerks, and Todd (Dawn) Mennenga; 13 great-grandchildren: Katie Gifford, Alex Gifford, Merissa Meints, Austin Meints, Drew Dahl, Luke Paxton, Halie Greenwood, Brooke Greenwood, Grant Eckhoff, Emily Eckhoff, Jacob Ver Helst, Dalton Mennenga, and Danielle Mennenga; four step-grandchildren: Tony Bonjour, Racheal (Chad) Olson, Brandon Bonjour, and Whitney Bonjour; seven step- great-grandchildren: Justin Fournier, Whitney Fournier, Lukas Maros, Liam Maros, Garrin Bonjour, Ethan Olson, and Jase Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - John R. "Jack" Shannon, 79, of 1726 Cerro Gordo Way, died Monday (Jan. 16, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon Seda and the Rev. Steve Palo, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A Scriptural wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the John R. "Jack" Shannon Memorial Fund.

Jack was born June 23, 1926 in Mason City, the son of William J. and Florence E. "Betty" (Reid) Shannon. Jack attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and the public schools in Manly, where he participated in football, baseball, basketball and was also a class officer.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and received his training in Mississippi, Arizona and Texas. He served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Jack was married Jan. 5, 1948, to Shirley Jones. To this union were born Maureen, John William, Tammy and Michele. Jack would later divorce and marry Dola Infante on Aug. 26, 1978.

Upon his discharge, he attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. After two years of college, he went to work for the M&St.L. Railroad as a switchman. Later, he went to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a switchman, brakeman, conductor and as a trainmaster. He retired in 1993 after 43 years of service.

Jack served in various union capacities in the area including general chairman of the Switchman Union of North America and the United Transportation Union. He served 25 years as president of NIAD Labor Council in Mason City, was a 20-year member of the Mason City Planning & Zoning Commission and the Civil Service Commission. Jack was an active member of VFW Post No. 733 where he served as past commander as well as Grand Commander for the state of Iowa Military Order of the Cooties.

Jack also worked for the Democratic Party of Cerro Gordo County, served as a field representative for the Iowa Liquor Control and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Dola M. STACYVILLE - Clem Theobald, passed away Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center at the age of 85.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Visitation Church in Stacyville with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Clem, son of Thomas and Gertrude Theobald, was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Meyer. From the time he finished school in Meyer, Clem farmed east of Stacyville. He married Alvina Schrandt of Stacyville in 1942 and together they operated the Theobald family farm until 1984. They then retired to their home in Stacyville.

Clem was an enthusiastic card player and also enjoyed bowling and reading, especially his two daily newspapers. Clem and Alvina enjoyed many fishing trips with friends and family to the lakes of Minnesota. Clem was a 4-H leader and also served as an elevator board member and in the Knights of Columbus for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alvina; two brothers, Paul and Walter; five sisters, Mary, Isabelle, Rosella, Marcella and Sister Angelita; and one grandson.

Clem is survived by his seven children, Ron (Valerie) Theobald of Burke, Va., Sue (Verlyn) Mullenbach of Stacyville, Mike Theobald of Oskaloosa, Linda (Rob) Reding of Houston, Texas, Jane (Denton) Voss of Leawood, Kan., Ed (Brenda) Theobald of Stacyville, and Tom (Darla) Theobald of Mankato, Minn.; sister, Helen Smith of Rochester, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY - Lowell Estel Thomson, 74, of 65 West View Drive, Mason City, Iowa died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and then one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Lowell E. Thomson Memorial Fund.

Lowell was born on March 2, 1931, on his grandfather Lester Knight's farm near Viola, Iowa, the son of Estel and Leota Mae (Knight) Thomson.

He attended school in several towns where his father taught, graduating from Kanawha High School in 1948, where he played baseball as a short-stop. His team won the state fall baseball title. He attended Britt Junior College and transferred to Iowa State Teachers College where he played two years of varsity baseball as an outfielder. He obtained a master's degree in secondary education in 1961, and a master's degree in physical education in 1967 at Greeley, Colo.

He was one of the first recipients of the Kennedy Family Special Olympics Fellowship Grant.

He taught and coached for many years at Ledyard, Plymouth, and Mason City public schools, retiring in 1986.

His overall baseball record was 354-201. He won six district titles, three sub-states and was state runner-up once.

Lowell served as a high school umpire/referee from 1958-1972. Later, he coached and umpired Little League baseball. He coached in the Second All-Star Series and was named Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year in 1980.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Estel, and uncle, George, he was inducted into the Iowa Coaches Hall of Fame for baseball on Feb. 6, 1999.

Lowell married Maryen (Mernie) Johnson on Dec. 22, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1974. He married Meryleen Mitchell on Sept. 15, 2000, at the International Peace Gardens.

He enjoyed playing golf, fishing in Canada, attending athletic events, having coffee with his fishing buddies at Country Kitchen and spending his winters in Weslaco, Texas.

Lowell is survived by his wife Meryleen, Virden, Manitoba, Canada; mother, Leota Mae Thomson, Lake Mills; four children: Leslie (Bill) Hoover, Loudon, Tenn., Robert (Sandy)Thomson, Cumming Ga., LuAnn (Mark) Worden, North Liberty, Iowa, and William (Karen) Thomson, Mason City; five grandchildren: Kris (Mindy) Meyer, Knoxville, Tenn., Sarah (Daniel) Watkins, Knoxville, Tenn., Jeb Hoover, Loudon, Tenn., Bryce (Stephanie) Thomson, Spring, Texas, and Ryan Thomson, Cumming, Ga.; three step-children: Bob (Linda) Lane, Max (Lorna) Lane and Valerie (Gerry) Sliwa of Canada; five step-grandchildren: Kim and Monica Hoover, and Adam, Ryan, and Ben Harrer; three brothers: David (Rita) Thomson, Overland Park, Kan., Donald (Kay) Thomson, Stevensville, Md., and Lyle (Orloue) Thomson, Lake Mills. He is also survived by several special nieces, nephews and cousins.

FOREST CITY - Douglas W. Book, 58, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at his home in Forest City.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hansen Fieldhouse in Forest City with the Rev. Jerry Blake of St. James Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour before the service on Friday at the fieldhouse.

Douglas Wayne Book was born in Forest City, Iowa, on Nov. 3, 1947, the son of Olaf and Ellen (Homes) Book. He grew up in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1965.

He attended Waldorf College before being hired as a full-time patrolman in 1968. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in January 1969, and took a leave of absence from the department in 1972 to complete his bachelor's degree at Northeast Missouri State University.

On Dec. 3, 1973, the Forest City Council voted to hire Book as its police chief, replacing retiring chief Harvey Hosier. Less than a month later, he was sworn in to a job he would never leave.

In addition to heading up the North Central Narcotics Task Force for the past 10 years, Doug, at various times in his career, served as the chairman of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Board, was president of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers, a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, the Narcotic Enforcement Council, the Drug Abuse Prevention & Violent Crime Council, the Drug Abuse Prevention and Education Council, the Public Safety Committee of the Governor's Commission on Down-Sizing State Government, and worked with the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team for Emergency Personnel that helped New York City police officers deal with issues in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

He held instructor ratings in the following: Law Enforcement Firearms, Chemical Munitions, Rifle, Striking Instruments, and DARE. He previously taught Law Enforcement classes at Waldorf College and was a guest instructor at the Basic Recruit Class of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

Doug is remembered as a dedicated professional who cared deeply for his fellow officers and his community.

He is survived by his father, Olaf Book, of Forest City; his uncles, Albert and Dell Book of Forest City, Harold Book of Fertile, Bud Homes of Oregon, Bob Homes of Arizona and Harold Reese of Colo, Iowa; an aunt, Violet Charlson of Red Wing, Minn.; many cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Book; two aunts and four uncles.

MASON CITY - Sterle "Red" E. Crandall, 85, of 1023 N. Carolina Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Friends may greet the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Following the visitation, according to Sterle's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Sterle "Red" E. Crandall was born on Jan. 12, 1921, in Hampton, son of George and Gladys (Oleson) Crandall. Red graduated from Hampton High School, where he was very active in all sports. After high school, Red worked at Farmers Hybrid Seed Corn Co. and the Milwaukee Railroad Co.

In 1940, Red was united in marriage to Dorothy Conway. In 1944, Red was drafted into the armed services and was later discharged in 1946. Returning home, Red returned to work for the Milwaukee Railroad Co. as a wrecking derrick engineer.

In 1954, he left the railroad and started working for the City of Mason City in the Park Department. He helped develop many of the parks that are now in existence in Mason City, such as Fredrick Hanford, Georgia Hanford, MacNider Woods Campground and Highland Park Golf Course.

In 1965, Red was appointed the city forester and in cooperation with Iowa State University helped save more than 22,000 elm trees from the Dutch Elm disease that struck the area. He also was one of the original planners and developers of the beautification program, planting many flowers and trees in Mason City. While he was city forester, Red enjoyed meeting with clubs and groups, explaining control and maintaining successful tree programs. During this time he made many friends throughout the North Iowa area.

Due to heart complications, Red retired from the city in 1979. For 14 years, Red and Dorothy wintered in Green Valley, Ariz., and spent summers visiting their children and traveling all over the United States.

Red enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, remodeling, cabinet making, and designing and constructing furniture.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hampton. Red was also a past member of the VFW, Elk's Lodge, and a charter member of the Evening Lion's Club.

Red will be greatly missed by his wife, Dorothy Crandall, of Mason City; four children, Marshall (Kay) Crandall of Joliet, Ill., Scott (Peg) Crandall of Greenville, S.C.; Kim Crandall of Davenport, and Cyndie (Pat) Whalen of Mason City; four grandchildren, Courtney (Bridget) Crandall, Chicago, Ill., Andrew (Lisa) Harden of Dubuque, Ashley (Bryan) Wilson of Austin, Minn., and Kate Crandall of Marietta, Ga.; one great-grandson, Isaac Harden, of Dubuque; one brother, Darrell Crandall, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys; and three brothers, LeRoy "Bud," Robert, and Max.

NORTHWOOD - Karen Kruse, 98, formerly of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) in the home of her granddaughter with family at her side in Escondido, Calif.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Karen was born March 18, 1907, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of Marie and Paul Pedersen. Karen traveled to the United States in 1913 with her parents and siblings and settled in Northwood. She attended school in Northwood and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Kruse on March 27, 1926, in Northwood. They lived and farmed east of Northwood until Vern died in 1958. Karen continued to live on the farm with her son, Kenneth, until he died in 1995. She then moved to Northwood and resided with her daughter, Charlotte (Susie), and husband, Bob, until Susie died in 2004. Since that time, she has divided her time between her granddaughters, Karen (Paul) Hendrikson of Escondido, Calif., and Laura (Mike) Richter of Cedar Falls.

Karen was an avid seamstress, cook, gardener, and helped on the farm. Janice R. Leist, 66, of Chester, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at her home.

Janice Ruth Lawson was born on Oct. 7, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa, to Thomas and Marjorie (Swancutt) Lawson. She graduated from LeRoy High School in LeRoy, Minn.

On Nov. 30, 1971, Janice married Doug Leist in Fillmore, Minn. Janice worked as a postal clerk in Grand Meadow, Minn., for 17 years.

She was a member of LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church and belonged to the church circle.

Janice loved spending time with her family and friends. She also loved being in her flower gardens, vegetable gardens, quilting, reading, and she had a love for nature.

Janice is survived by her husband, Doug Leist, of Chester; six children, Cindy (Chris) Christensen of Riceville, Suzanne (Rick) Brown of Austin, Minn., Rusty (Gina) Taylor of Riceville, Sherry Roehr of Riceville, Terry (Carol) Leist of Singapore, and Tim (Rachel) Leist of Iowa City; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; her mother, Marge, of Spring Valley, Minn.; three sisters, Jeanette (Bud Mlenar) Baker of Spring Valley, Minn., Shirley (Kent) Flikki of Minnesota City, Minn., and Diane Ellingson of Hudson, Wis.; and four brothers, Thomas (Fran) Lawson of Eyota, Minn., Gary (Diane) Lawson of Reads Landing, Minn., David (Julie) Lawson of LeRoy, Minn., and John (Darla Erb) Lawson of Menominee, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas.

MASON CITY - John C. Poulos, 88, of 836 E. State St. died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. A Trisagion service will be held at 6 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be given to the John C. Poulos Memorial Fund.

John was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Christ and Irene (Korkidis) Poulos. John's father, born in Kertezi, Kalavrita, Greece, and mother, born in Athens, Greece, immigrated to the United States with the last name Konstantakopoulos. John graduated from Mason City High School in 1935 then attended the University of Iowa.

John married Genevieve Palmer on Oct. 21, 1943, in Gary, Indiana, and in January of 1945 they were married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City. While living in Gary, John worked in the steel mills. The Pouloses moved to Britt, where they owned and operated Poulos Billards.

In 1955, they returned to Mason City where John worked for Jacob B. Decker and Sons. He retired from Decker's in 1975. John had also worked for the Hasapopoulos family at the Holiday Motor Lodge in Clear Lake for 25 years.

John was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as parish council president for 20 years. He was president emeritus of the parish council. He was also a member of the Greek fraternal organization AHEPA and was an active member of the AFL-CIO Labor Union.

John is survived by his wife, Genevieve Poulos of Mason City; son, James Poulos of Duluth, Minn.; daughters, Pamela Hunssinger and husband, Frank, of Lake Zurich, Ill., Kristie Pattison and husband, George, of Woodstock, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Hunssinger, and Nicholas Pattison; brother, Sam Poulos and wife, Mary Lou, of Mason City; sister, Lula Poulos of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katherine Trigas; niece, Eirini Trigas; and nephew, Gregory Poulos.

MASON CITY - John R. "Jack" Shannon, 79, of 1726 Cerro Gordo Way, died Monday (Jan. 16, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon Seda and the Rev. Steve Palo, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A Scriptural wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the John R. "Jack" Shannon Memorial Fund.

Jack was born June 23, 1926 in Mason City, the son of William J. and Florence E. "Betty" (Reid) Shannon. Jack attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and the public schools in Manly, where he participated in football, baseball, basketball and was also a class officer.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and received his training in Mississippi, Arizona and Texas. He served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Jack was married Jan. 5, 1948, to Shirley Jones. To this union were born Maureen, John William, Tammy and Michele. Jack would later divorce and marry Dola Infante on Aug. 26, 1978.

Upon his discharge, he attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. After two years of college, he went to work for the M&St.L. Railroad as a switchman. Later, he went to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a switchman, brakeman, conductor and as a trainmaster. He retired in 1993 after 43 years of service.

Jack served in various union capacities in the area including general chairman of the Switchman Union of North America and the United Transportation Union. He served 25 years as president of NIAD Labor Council in Mason City, was a 20-year member of the Mason City Planning & Zoning Commission and the Civil Service Commission. Jack was an active member of VFW Post No. 733 where he served as past commander as well as Grand Commander for the state of Iowa Military Order of the Cooties.

Jack also worked for the Democratic Party of Cerro Gordo County, served as a field representative for the Iowa Liquor Control and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Dola M. STACYVILLE - Clem Theobald, passed away Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center at the age of 85.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Visitation Church in Stacyville with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Clem, son of Thomas and Gertrude Theobald, was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Meyer. From the time he finished school in Meyer, Clem farmed east of Stacyville. He married Alvina Schrandt of Stacyville in 1942 and together they operated the Theobald family farm until 1984. They then retired to their home in Stacyville.

Clem was an enthusiastic card player and also enjoyed bowling and reading, especially his two daily newspapers. Clem and Alvina enjoyed many fishing trips with friends and family to the lakes of Minnesota. Clem was a 4-H leader and also served as an elevator board member and in the Knights of Columbus for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alvina; two brothers, Paul and Walter; five sisters, Mary, Isabelle, Rosella, Marcella and Sister Angelita; and one grandson.

Clem is survived by his seven children, Ron (Valerie) Theobald of Burke, Va., Sue (Verlyn) Mullenbach of Stacyville, Mike Theobald of Oskaloosa, Linda (Rob) Reding of Houston, Texas, Jane (Denton) Voss of Leawood, Kan., Ed (Brenda) Theobald of Stacyville, and Tom (Darla) Theobald of Mankato, Minn.; sister, Helen Smith of Rochester, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

NORTHWOOD - Karen Kruse, 98, formerly of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) in the home of her granddaughter with family at her side in Escondido, Calif.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Karen was born March 18, 1907, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of Marie and Paul Pedersen. Karen traveled to the United States in 1913 with her parents and siblings and settled in Northwood. She attended school in Northwood and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Kruse on March 27, 1926, in Northwood. They lived and farmed east of Northwood until Vern died in 1958. Karen continued to live on the farm with her son, Kenneth, until he died in 1995. She then moved to Northwood and resided with her daughter, Charlotte (Susie), and husband, Bob, until Susie died in 2004. Since that time, she has divided her time between her granddaughters, Karen (Paul) Hendrikson of Escondido, Calif., and Laura (Mike) Richter of Cedar Falls.

Karen was an avid seamstress, cook, gardener, and helped on the farm. BRICELYN, Minn. -Lucille Sime, 93, of Bricelyn, died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minn., with Pastor Chris Fiske officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and one hour before the service at the church.

Alta Lucille (Sprecher) Sime, daughter of Elwood and Fannie (Brown) Sprecher, was born May 14, 1912, in rural Marshalltown. The family moved to the Scarville area when she was three years old. She went to country school and graduated from Scarville High School.

On March 21, 1934, Lucille was united in marriage to Russell Sime at the Methodist parsonage in Forest City. They lived on a farm in Eden township for four years and then moved to a farm south of Scarville where they lived for four years. They then purchased the farm east of Rake where they farmed and resided for 63 years, until she entered the Lake Mills Care Center for the last four months.

Lucille was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active as a Sunday school teacher and in WELCA. For 21 years, Lucille was a 4-H leader working with the young girls, also on PTA and band activities. Lucille spent her whole life working the farm and working in the fields. She loved driving the tractor! Lucille loved attending the activities of her children and grandchildren.

She leaves to mourn her four children, LaVonne (Franklin) Ohleasik of Nome, Alaska, Ronald (Nancy) Sime of Rake, Lois (John) Forney of Des Moines, Joan (Donald) Winter of Lake Mills; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; her parents, Elwood and Fannie Sprecher; her brother, Willard Sprecher; and an infant grandchild, Edward William Ohleasik.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Rachell S. Kalvig Gataletto passed away on Tuesday morning (Jan. 10, 2006) at her home in Orlando after a long and debilitating illness, at the age of 71.

Rachel was born in Mason City, Iowa, in a tent on July 23, 1934. She was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a talented folk artist, an avid garage-sale junkie and a freelance costume jewelry consultant.

Rachel was a Roman Catholic and a proud member of the Republican Party and the National Rifle Association.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; her daughter, Donata Nutter; and a son, Steven, all of Orlando; a son, David, of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Verna Weitzel; and brothers, Donald, Arthur and Carl Kalvig, all of Northwood; and brother, David Kalvig of Mason City; and her sister, Dorothy Schoolcraft, of Hudson, Iowa.

Rachel was preceded in death by her brothers, Merle, Raymond and Elmer Kalvig.

A memorial Mass was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at St. Andrew Catholic Church on Hastings Street in Orlando.

INDIANOLA - Funeral services for Heather Knust, 32, and her son, Cody, 12, who died Monday (Jan. 16, 2006) of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in North Dakota, will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.

Born in Iowa City, Heather was scheduled to graduate from Des Moines Area Community College this spring and had enrolled at Simpson College in Indianola. She had worked for the Christian Opportunity Center in Indianola, and had just started working for Lutheran Social Services in Des Moines.

Cody was born in Des Moines, and was in the seventh grade at Martensdale-St. Marys Community School in Martensdale. He enjoyed family and friends, bowling, and loved the Hawks and Dale Earnhart Jr.

Heather is survived by her husband, Cory Knust of Indianola; parents, Don (Carol) Bethke of Lake Mills, Elaine Bethke of Indianola; brother, Wayne Bethke of North Liberty; sisters, Diane Chantha-vong of Texas, Megan Bethke of Winterset, and Becky Bethke of Cedar Rapids; mother-in-law, Donna Knust and father-in-law, Les Knust of Lacona; sisters-in-law, Sherri (Wade) Schurman of Milo, Kelly (Travis) Eckstein of Indianola; brother-in-law, Chad Knust and step-mother Karen Knust of Indianola and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, in Northwood.

Karen was born March 18, 1907, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of Marie and Paul Pedersen. Karen traveled to the United States in 1913 with her parents and siblings and settled in Northwood. She attended school in Northwood and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Kruse on March 27, 1926, in Northwood. They lived and farmed east of Northwood until Vern died in 1958. Karen continued to live on the farm with her son, Kenneth, until he died in 1995. She then moved to Northwood and resided with her daughter, Charlotte (Susie), and husband, Bob, until Susie died in 2004. Since that time, she has divided her time between her granddaughters, Karen (Paul) Hendrikson of Escondido, Calif., and Laura (Mike) Richter of Cedar Falls.

Karen was an avid seamstress, cook, gardener, and helped on the farm. After moving, she continued sewing and reading and writing letters as long as her health allowed, but her greatest enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. Her greatest strength was her memory; she was a great historian and family resource. Her family loved to hear her recall memories that ranged from crossing the ocean with her family at the age of six, to fishing trips up north, to harvesting corn by hand.

Left to cherish her memory are granddaughters, Karen and husband, Paul Hendrikson, of Escondido, Calif., and Laura and husband, Mike Richter, of Cedar Falls; a great-granddaughter, Michelle, and husband, Juan Torres, of Poway, Calif.; great-great-grandsons, Paul and Zackary Torres; great-grandson, Michael Hendrikson and wife, Jennifer, of Ramona, Calif.; great-great-grandson, Dylan; great-granddaughter, Beth Richter of Leadville, Colo.; step-grandsons, Jason Richter, wife Sheila, and their children, Alexis and Collin, of Cedar Falls, and Chad Richter, wife Melanie, their children, Grace and Gavin, of Cedar Falls; step-granddaughter, Megan, her children, Jake and Tyler, of Waterloo; son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Sistek, Northwood; along with several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceding Karen in death was her parents; husband, Vernon; son, Kenneth; daughter, Susie; a sister, Clara Whitesell; and brothers, Erik and Elmer Pedersen.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -Sharon Rice Nehls, 63, lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, (Jan. 18, 2006) at the hospice home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sharon was born in Britt, Iowa, and graduated from North Central High School in Manly, Iowa. She went on to graduate in nursing from the St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Mason City, Iowa, and remained in nursing through November of 2004.

Sharon is survived by her two children, Chris Nehls and Tara Walker, both living in Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren; her father, Norman L. Rice, of Plymouth, Iowa; two sisters, Linda Bass of Mt. Ranch, Calif., and Margo Friemel of Bettendorf; and one brother, Alan Rice of Ames.

Poulos, John C.
 
MASON CITY - John C. Poulos, 88, of 836 E. State St. died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. A Trisagion service will be held at 6 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be given to the John C. Poulos Memorial Fund.

John was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Christ and Irene (Korkidis) Poulos. John's father, born in Kertezi, Kalavrita, Greece, and mother, born in Athens, Greece, immigrated to the United States with the last name Konstantakopoulos. John graduated from Mason City High School in 1935 then attended the University of Iowa.

John married Genevieve Palmer on Oct. 21, 1943, in Gary, Indiana, and in January of 1945 they were married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City. While living in Gary, John worked in the steel mills. The Pouloses moved to Britt, where they owned and operated Poulos Billards.

In 1955, they returned to Mason City where John worked for Jacob B. Decker and Sons. He retired from Decker's in 1975. John had also worked for the Hasapopoulos family at the Holiday Motor Lodge in Clear Lake for 25 years.

John was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as parish council president for 20 years. He was president emeritus of the parish council. He was also a member of the Greek fraternal organization AHEPA and was an active member of the AFL-CIO Labor Union.

John is survived by his wife, Genevieve Poulos of Mason City; son, James Poulos of Duluth, Minn.; daughters, Pamela Hunssinger and husband, Frank, of Lake Zurich, Ill., Kristie Pattison and husband, George, of Woodstock, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Hunssinger, and Nicholas Pattison; brother, Sam Poulos and wife, Mary Lou, of Mason City; sister, Lula Poulos of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katherine Trigas; niece, Eirini Trigas; and nephew, Gregory Poulos.

KENSETT -Donna Jean Robbins, 63, of Kensett, died Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2006) at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 600 Fifth St. in Kensett, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.
