Berniece Thelma Parker was born Aug. 23, 1914,
in rural Butler County near Greene to Lewis and
Rose (Kiefer) McElroy. She was the first born of
six children and the twin of sister, Bernadine.
Berniece attended and graduated from Rockford
Community Schools and lived in the Rockford area
all her life until the past four years, when she
moved to and resided at the care facility in
Madrid.
Berniece was a 60-year member of the First
United Methodist Church in Rockford and was
active in the church women’s circle. In her
earlier years, Berniece enjoyed her membership
in the Rockford Ladies Club.
On April 25, 1936, Berniece was united in

Some of Berniece’s hobbies and leisure
activities included quilting, knitting,
especially sweaters for her family, tending to

was in her ability to bake breads, hot cross
buns and pies. As a new bride, Berniece entered

rights were important to her because she was one
of, if not the youngest contestant.

and cooking. She delighted in cooking the fish
and game brought home to her from her family and
the day to day cooking of homemade meals for her
family and friends. She was a thrifty spender

Lova Mae Brown
CLEAR LAKE — Lova Brown, 82, of 2601 S.
Lakeview Drive in Clear Lake, passed
away Monday (Jan. 2, 2006) at the TLC
Care Center in Henderson, Nev.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake,
with Pastor Tom Christian officiating.
Interment will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to
services on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel.
She was born Lova Mae McLaughlin on Jan.
17, 1923, in Waverly, Kan., to Clayton
and Marie (Bever) McLaughlin. Her
parents moved the family to a farm near
Minburn, Iowa, when she was a young girl
and she graduated from high school at
Washington Township School in Dallas
County. She then continued her education
at Simpson College in Indianola and
graduated with a bachelor of music
degree.
Lova loved music. She and her twin
sister, Lola, entertained on radio back
in the early 1940s when radio stations
still had live entertainment. They were
known as the “Mac Twins,” and they sang
and played the piano at KFNF,
Shenandoah, Iowa, and later at WNAX in
Yankton, S.D.
The act broke up when her sister married
and moved away, but Lova continued to
work in radio on the office staff of
various stations including KFI in Los
Angeles, Calif. While there she married
Robert Grover Brown, originally of
Shenandoah, Iowa, at the Little Country
Church of Hollywood on May 23,1953.
Shortly after their marriage in
Hollywood, Lova and Grover moved to
Ames, where Grover had taken a position
on the electrical engineering faculty at
Iowa State University. They remained in
Ames until his retirement in 1989. They
then moved to Clear Lake, where they had
maintained a summer home for many years.
While in Ames, Lova became interested in
women’s four-part harmony music. She
helped organize a Sweet Adelines chorus
there in the 1960s, and she both
directed the chorus and sang in a
quartet for many years before moving to
Clear Lake. Again, while in Clear Lake,
she helped organize a Sweet Adelines
group, and this group eventually evolved
into the Music City Sweet Adelines
Chorus. In addition to directing, Lova
also arranged Sweet Adelines music, and
the Music City Chorus still uses some of
her arrangements in its annual shows.
Lova is survived by her husband, Robert
Grover Brown; two daughters, Janet
Neumann and Lori Richardson; a very
special niece, (daughter of her late
twin sister Lola) Jennifer McLaughlin;
two granddaughters, two grandsons, and
two special great-nephews. She also
leaves behind many other nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Lova was preceded in death by her
parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Lova was a wonderful wife, mother, and
person. She had many friends in the
North Iowa area as well as Ames. All of
her family and friends will miss her
very much.
