Linda Ann Boelman was born July 15, 1949, in Mason City to Peter James and Eunice Maxine (Weber) McCauley, the first of two daughters. She attended schools in Postville and McGregor schools, graduating from McGregor High School among the class of 1967. While in high school, Linda played the clarinet and was involved in a variety of fine arts activities.

Linda furthered her education at Winona Secretarial School in Minnesota, wrote and passed the Certified Professional Secretary National Exams (CPS), received her associate of arts degree from North Iowa Area Community College and completed one semester of classes at Iowa State University in Ames.

In 1979, among a gathering of friends in Clear Lake, Linda met Stanley L. Boelman. They were united in marriage at First United Methodist Church in Mason City on April 19, 1980. Stan was the love of Linda’s life and her best friend. As a couple, they constantly expressed their compatibility and treasured any time spent together.

Stan described his wife as a strong-willed woman who possessed a keen and unique wisdom. She glowed with both inner and outer beauty! Linda and Stan loved spending moments just talking, sharing and laughing. Linda and Stan became the proud parents of a daughter, Michelle, and a son, Steven.

Linda was employed at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa for 16 years in the human resource department. Linda had a passion in regards to her children’s educations and made herself available at any time to assist Michelle and Steve with their schoolwork or activities. It was important to her to be at home when the children arrived from school, be the disciplinarian if needed and have the family evening meal around the table.

She took pride in maintaining her home, was highly organized and conservative, gave great advice and found joy in her close connections with friends. She assisted many friends and relatives with financial advice and planning.

Linda was an avid reader, especially of romance novels and magazines; enjoyed quilting; treasured holidays and family gatherings, especially at Carol’s on Christmas Eve; visiting and sharing with her coffee group of gal friends; being near beaches or the ocean; vacation traveling with her family, especially their trip to Hawaii and the annual family weekend trip to the McGregor area to visit the apple orchards, see the fall leaves and attend craft shows.

Over the two and a half years that Linda fought her cancer, she served as a strong role model to all who knew her! She exhibited great strength, determination and a positive attitude. Linda’s family offer appreciation and thanks to all the doctors, nurses, friends, family and caregivers who touched their lives and cared so deeply for Linda.

Ruby Mullen

CHARLES CITY — Ruby Mullen, 89, of Charles City died Saturday (Jan. 7, 2006) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City with her family by her side as they celebrated her 89th birthday.

Memorial services for Ruby Mullen will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Rock Grove Cemetery in Nora Springs.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Ruby P. Mullen Memorial Fund.

Ruby Pearl Studer Mullen was born Jan. 7, 1917, at Algona, to German/Irish parents Frank and Katie (Cannon) Studer. She received her education at Rockwell. On Sept. 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Mullen. They later divorced.

Rubie’s childhood was cut short when her father suffered a critical heart condition when she was 11 or 12 years old that left him unable to operate the farm by himself. With her mother and younger brother, she started working in the fields using horses to plant and harvest corn, oats and beans, plow fields and cut hay. She would cut and shock oats by hand, loading them onto flatbed wagons and then drive a team of horses up to a thrashing machine where she would pitch the bundles into the thrasher. She could hold her own with any of the men. All through her life she would start work at daybreak and rest only after the sun had set and the last chores were done. She lived through the Great Depression and during the later part of World War II worked the night shift in the Oliver Foundry at Charles City. Through hard and difficult times her spirit never broke. In July 1963, she was permanently injured in a major car accident caused by a drunk driver. She has fought through the pain and suffering from that fateful day and never complained.

Ruby treasured spending time with her family and friends and found great joy in seeing and visiting with her grandchildren, and always found time to acknowledge birthdays and holidays. She was an excellent cook, homemaker, and gardener, who appreciated nature and never tires of watching the birds and animals. After the accident, her interests included watching television, reading, and looking at pictures of different places and people around the world.

Living family members include four sons and their wives, Richard and Mary Jo Mullen of Minneapolis, Minn., Dennis and Marilyn Mullen of Rockford, Larry and Loraine Mullen of Charles City, and Russell and Peggy Mullen of Charles City; a daughter, Donna Mullen of Algona; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and soon arriving, a great-great-grandchild.
