Basgall, Gladys F.   

MASON CITY - Gladys F. Basgall, 94, of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 23, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul C. Nelson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Gladys F. Basgall Memorial Fund.

Gladys F. Zorn was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Mason City the daughter of Frederick W. and Ida (Hartzfeldt) Zorn. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1929. Gladys then attended Hamilton Business College.

She began working at Sweetheart Bakery until the family purchased Syl's Fruit Market in 1950. The grocery store was a true "family store," with Gladys working many long hours while raising two girls. Gladys then began working for Hale Phipp's Motor Co. as a bookkeeper and did so until she retired in 1975.

She enjoyed working in her yard with her various kinds of flowers, crocheting and playing cards. Gladys also enjoyed going on walks, but family was the most important thing. She loved her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren dearly. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Janice Meyer and Shirley Hain, both of Mason City; six grandchildren, Lori Wander and husband, Kent, Jeff Hain, Judy Nelsen and husband, Terry, Jay Hain, Jerry Hain and wife, Angie, and Jean Kraft and husband, Brad, all of Mason City; fourteen great-grandchildren, Amber, Desiree and Sabre Wander, Laurel, Mitch and Clint Hain, Jennifer, Ron and Heather Nelsen, Brooke Hain, Justin and Jordan Hain, and Samantha and John Kraft; one brother, Irvin F. Zorn of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one great granddaughter.

Berns, Connie Fae Steffens  
 
BELMOND - Connie Fae Steffens Berns, 57, of Belmond passed away Friday (Feb. 24, 2006) at her home near Belmond.

Funeral services for Connie Berns will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Mike Druhl will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Connie Berns will he held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luicks Lane S. in Belmond.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Connie Fae Berns.

Connie Berns was born on June 8, 1948, at the Clarion Hospital, the daughter of Rex and Loretta Bingham Steffens.

She was raised in Rowan, Iowa, attending school there until the Rowan school closed. Connie had a perfect thirteen-year attendance in Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Rowan.

She graduated from the Belmond Public School in 1966. Connie furthered her education by attending Ellsworth Junior College, taking secretarial courses.

Connie married Robert (Bob) Berns on July 16, 1977, in Rowan in her parents' backyard. Connie and Robert made their home in Belmond. Connie worked in a variety of businesses in the local area, but the last fourteen years she has been employed by Krysilis.

Connie's hobbies included reading and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed making afghans and, more recently, picture quilts. However, most important to Connie were her friends and family.

Connie and Bob served as surrogate parents to many youth in the area; their home had an "open door" to those youth who were an extension of their own family. Those "family" members were also very supportive to Connie and Bob as well through good times and bad times over the years.

Connie is survived by her husband, Bob; her son, Terry (Lenay) Wesenberg of Coral Spring, Fla., and their two children Brooke and Kylie; her sister, Phyllis (John) Serpa of Fallon, Nev.; brother-in-law Brian (Kim) Berns of Jefferson; and sister-in-law Lisa (Bob) Vileta of Marengo.

Also left to cherish Connie's memory are five nieces and two nephews, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her son, Anthony, in 2003.

GARNER - Sandie J. Butz, 62, of Garner, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at New Braunfels, Texas.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Sandie Joan Butz, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Mulhall) Mandeville, was born Feb. 6, 1944, at Spencer, Mass. She graduated from David Proudy High School, Spencer, Mass., in 1961, and Ollis Beauty Academy, Worchester, Mass., in 1962.

On Nov. 16, 1963, she was married to Jack Butz at East Brookfield, Mass. They lived in Garner where they raised their family. Sandie was employed at North Iowa Printing Co. in Garner. She enjoyed her family, traveling, golfing and gambling.

Sandie is survived by her husband, Jack, of Garner; three children, Dena (Myron) Clemens of Ogden, Daniel (Angela) Butz of Denver, Colo., and Debra Butz of Bethesda, Md.; two grandchildren, Nathan Sorenson of Rochester, Minn., and Aaron Clemens of Ogden; her sister-in-law, Mickie Mandeville of Spencer, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Donald Mandeville.

Copley, Frederick R.
 
On Feb. 15, 2006, at 12:30 p.m. MST, Frederick R. (Olney) Copley, born Oct. 1, 1945, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in the Southern Arizona Veterans Health Care Center, Tucson, Ariz. Fred, a disabled Vietnam veteran, died due to severe complications associated with Agent Orange, induced type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Fred, who grew up in Clear Lake and attended Clear Lake High School, joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17, and after completing "boot camp" at MCRD, San Diego, Calif., was station-ed at Las Pulgas, Camp Pendleton, Calif., in India Co., 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He developed into a fine Marine and was exceptionally proud of his Vietnam service with Alpha Co., 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division (FMF). Fred also did a second tour in Vietnam with 9th Motor Transport as a heavy equipment retriever, but most all the reflections and memories he shared regarding his service over there revolved around his duty and service with 1/3. He was very proud of his service in the Marines and those that he served with.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Fred resided in Long Beach, Calif., until moving back to Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1985. He married Karen Burns Copley in 1986, and they moved to Nogales, Ariz., where Karen works for the Nogales Unified School District.

Fred is survived by his wife, Karen, and daughters, Margaret, Brandy (James), and Heather (Thomas). Fred is also survived by brothers, Jim (Sharon) Copley and Herb (Lori) Copley; sisters, Lorna (Bill) Schutz, Bonnie (David) Stark and Robbie Copley Mollencamp; numerous nieces and nephews; and his mother and father-in-law, Wally and Pat Burns.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Olney and Margaret Olney Copley; stepfather, Lawrence Copley; and brother, Roger.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Disabled American Veterans Association.

Formanek, Rose M.
 
GARNER - Rose M. Formanek, 96, of Garner, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Fr. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., today at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with a combined Catholic Workman and Rosary Society rosary at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services the church.

Rose Marie Formanek, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Hejlik) Schoun, was born Sept. 11, 1909, on a farm south of Duncan. She attended the rural schools of Garfield Township. On Nov. 26,1929. She was married to Frank C. Formanek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They lived on a farm north of Duncan until 1972, when they moved into Garner.

Rose had worked at the Garner A&W, Garner Locker and in the lunch room at IMT in Garner. She enjoyed her family, gardening, raising flowers and Czech baking, especially kolaches and rohlicky. She loved the color pink. A favorite pastime was going to garage sales with her sister, Elsie.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner and past member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. She belonged to Rosary Society and the Catholic Workman FCSLA Branch W51.

Rose is survived by her son, Leo (Eddie Lee) Formanek of Clear Lake; her daughter-in-law, Mary Lou (George) Tusha of Garner; grandchildren, Randy (Chris) Formanek of Garner, Steve Formanek of Garner, Rick (Renae) Formanek of Clear Lake, Gerald Formanek of Phoenix, Ariz, Dean (Tami) Formanek of Phoenix, Ariz., Larry (Carolyn) Formanek of Knoxville, Greg (Julie) Formanek of Farmersburg and Jane (Marvin) Ricke of Garner; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Formanek of Garner and Maxine (Les) Swenson of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Agnes Formanek of Garner and Vivian Formanek of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, on May 9, 1985; parents; son, Raymond, on Feb. 25, 1991; daughter-in-law, Mary Formanek; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

JEFFERSON - Harold Duane Hedges, 82, of Jefferson, formerly of Scranton, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church Chapel with the Rev. Kevin L. Mackey officiating.

MASON CITY - William H. Hippee, 90, of 1500 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 23, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First Street N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Wendy K. Abrahamson officiating.

There will also be a memorial service 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3424 Forest Ave., Des Moines, with the Rev. Robert Elfvin officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Luke's Resurrection Garden.

Memorials may be directed to the William H. Hippee Memorial Fund.

William Henry Hippee was born March 12, 1915. Bill attended school in Des Moines school system. In his early years, he was a congressional page in Washington, D.C., for Congressman Herring. Bill served in World War II and was honorably discharged. Bill was hired in September 1937 at KRNT Radio. Bill became general manager in January 1970 for KRNT Radio, Television and Theater, retiring in May 1981 as vice president of Cowles Communications Inc. and president of KCCI Broadcasting Division. He served two, three-year terms on the National CBS Affiliates Board.

Bill served 24 years on the Des Moines Public Library Board. In a published 1991 history of the library, "his dedicated service was the longest reappointment record in its 125-year existence." Bill was elected board president four separate times.

He was a long-time member of the Des Moines Club, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Des Moines, and recently attended church at St. John's Episcopal Church, Mason City.

Bill is survived by his wife, Lucy Hippee; son, William Hippee Jr.; daughter, Susan Magowitz; step-daughters, Julie Craven and Jackie Russell; 11 grandchildren; brother, Herdon Hippee; and sister, Mary. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Ann Lewis, and brother, Charlie Hippee.

OSAGE - Rose A. Meyer, 96, of Osage, died Saturday (Feb, 25, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (March 2, 2006) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery at Riceville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service.

Rose was born on March 22, 1909, at the family farm near Bailey, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Jordan) Dunlay. She graduated in 1926 from Riceville High School and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years, receiving her Teaching Certificate. She then taught in various country schools in the area.

Rose married Melvin Meyer on May 18, 1935, in Riceville.

In 1946, Rose and Melvin purchased the general store in New Haven with Rose's sister, Irene, and her husband, Venie Weber, and called it "Meyer & Weber General & Feed Store." They ran the store until 1981, when they sold the store and moved to Osage.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Melvin and Rose built and maintained Lake Melrose in New Haven.

Rose is survived by 13 nephews and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin, in 1987; four sisters: Irene Weber, Ellen Becvar, Kathryn Dunlay and Mary Dunlay; brother, Robert Dunlay; two brothers-in-law, Venie Weber and George Becvar; sister-in-law, Letha Dunlay, and a niece, Beverly Keim.

Rice, Carrol E.
 
ROCKWELL - Carrol E. Rice, 95, formerly of 639 Southview Drive in Rockwell, died Friday afternoon (Feb. 24, 2006) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, where he was a resident.

The service celebrating Carrol's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, 303 E. Monroe St. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Bruce E. Wittern and the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, 303 E. Monroe St. in Rockwell. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Carrol E. Rice Memorial Fund.

Carrol Ellsworth Rice was born Aug. 19, 1910, rural Clear Lake, the son of Clark C. and Ella Gertrude (Hamstreet) Rice. He was the fourth of eight children born to his parents and was baptized and became a member of Swaledale United Methodist Church.

Carrol attended Hubbard Independent Rural School and in 1928 graduated from Clear Lake High School. He attained one year of college following high school at Iowa State University in Ames.

Carrol met Leola Marie Gerdes and the couple was united in marriage at the Methodist church in Waverly on April 17, 1936. They began the busy life of farming and became the proud parents of five children, Calvin, Harlan, Margaret, Jeanette and Carolyn.

Carrol took great pride in providing and caring for his family. He was a very devoted 70-year member of Swaledale United Methodist Church and many community clubs and organizations, serving on numerous boards and councils. Carrol found great joy in sharing his knowledge and time with others. In his earlier years, he was a 4-H club leader for 20 years. He and his wife treasured traveling together in their leisure time. They had the great opportunity to host a foreign exchange student, Luis "Henry" Enrique Canillas, whom they have always considered a son and remain in close contact with.

Carrol will be dearly cherished by many relatives and friends who have shared in his long and full life.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Leola M. Rice of Rockwell; his children, Calvin (Patricia) Rice of Bemidji, Minn., Harlan (Marlene) Rice of Rockwell, Margaret (Tom) Hitzhusen of Geneseo, Ill., Jeanette (Wes) Hanson of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Carolyn (Dave) Just of Swale-dale; his sister, Geneva Felton; his grandchildren, Curt (Tove Dahl) Rice and Espen, Kyle (Brenda) Rice, Caryn (Wade) Weber and Cedric, Amelia and Lawton, Cindy Rice, Shara Rice, Daniel (Kristine) Hitzhusen and Scott and Bill, Debra (Brandon) Sieben and Kay and Karina, Krista Hanson, Alicia Hanson, Suzanne (Dan) Schuknecht, Jeff Just, and Karie Just. His extended grandchildren in Paraguay include Jose, Ileana, Maria Angeles and Aleli. He will also be sadly missed by many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Carrol in death are his parents; five brothers, Kenneth, Clifford, Paul, Harold and Virgil Rice; and his sister, Edith Edson.

CLEAR LAKE - Darylene J. Wise, 70, of 405 27th Ave. S., formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at Apple Valley Assisted Living, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Chris Clarkson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan- Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel. Further visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Darylene J. Wise Memorial Fund in care of Tina Gabel or Jason Wise.

Darylene Smith was born May 18, 1935, the daughter of Daryle M. and Ethel M. (Hedgecock) Smith. Darylene attended schools in the Mason City school system. She was united in marriage to James Lloyd Wise on Nov. 8, 1958; to this union three children were born. She worked several years at Medical Arts at the lunch counter, and Darylene and Jim both worked several years for Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, up until their retirement.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and collecting all different little knick-knacks. Her greatest love was spending time with her husband, Jim. They loved doing everything together, and spending time with her family and friends.

Darylene is survived by her children, Tina (Steve) Gabel, Mason City, and Jason (Lynn) Wise, Mason City; grandchildren, Calista (Mike) Wegner, Zachary Gabel, Noah Gabel, Stephanie, Jeff, Mike and Jacie Wise, Derek Kunz, and Rob Determan, all of Mason City; great-grandson, Bryce Cox, Mason City, along with close friend, Steve; and nieces, nephews and friends.

Darylene was preceded in death by her parents, Daryle and Ethel Smith; husband, Jim Lloyd Wise; son, Troy Wise; and brother, George Smith.

MASON CITY - Mildred A. Austin, 80, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Healey officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Mildred was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Rice, Minn., the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Froesh) Deets.

In her childhood years, she resided in Rockwell and Rock Falls. She married Clifford A. Austin on June 5, 1949, in Nora Springs. She worked at Park Hospital, Good Shepherd Health Center, and the Gerard School, where she retired in 1987.

Mildred enjoyed making quilts, sewing, playing board games and playing her favorite card game, "500." Mildred's family was important to her and she especially enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

Mildred is survived by her children, Vicki Lekwa and husband, Rande, of Tempe, Ariz., Steve Austin and wife, Judy, of Mason City, Mark Austin and wife, Luanne, of Mason City, and Sue Schultz and husband, Mike, of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, Michelle, Megan, Jesse, Ian, Samaria, Mitchell, Haley, Eric, Sarah, Patrick and Joshua; seven great-grandchildren, Zach, Olivia, Sandra, Cory, Jessica, Brittany and Tyler; sisters, Audrey Hewitt of Nora Springs, Laurine Kressin of Bloomer, Wis., and Annabelle Christiansen of Nora Springs; sisters-in-law, Janet Deets of Nora Springs, Sadie Deets of Clear Lake, Dorine Deets of Mason City, Audrey Hasapopoulos and husband, Ted, Mary Lou Graff and husband, Ron, Rosie Austin, Ruby Austin, a brother-in-law, Leonard Christiansen; and many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from the Belmond Public School in 1966. Connie furthered her education by attending Ellsworth Junior College, taking secretarial courses.

Connie married Robert (Bob) Berns on July 16, 1977, in Rowan in her parents' backyard. Connie and Robert made their home in Belmond. Connie worked in a variety of businesses in the local area, but the last fourteen years she has been employed by Krysilis.

Connie's hobbies included reading and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed making afghans and, more recently, picture quilts. However, most important to Connie were her friends and family.

Connie and Bob served as surrogate parents to many youth in the area; their home had an "open door" to those youth who were an extension of their own family. Those "family" members were also very supportive to Connie and Bob as well through good times and bad times over the years.

Connie is survived by her husband, Bob; her son, Terry (Lenay) Wesenberg of Coral Spring, Fla., and their two children Brooke and Kylie; her sister, Phyllis (John) Serpa of Fallon, Nev.; brother-in-law Brian (Kim) Berns of Jefferson; and sister-in-law Lisa (Bob) Vileta of Marengo.

Also left to cherish Connie's memory are five nieces and two nephews, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her son, Anthony, in 2003.

On Nov. 16, 1963, she was married to Jack Butz at East Brookfield, Mass. They lived in Garner where they raised their family. Sandie was employed at North Iowa Printing Co. in Garner. She enjoyed her family, traveling, golfing and gambling.

OSAGE - Rose A. Meyer, 96, of Osage, died Saturday (Feb, 25, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (March 2, 2006) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery at Riceville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service.

Rose was born on March 22, 1909, at the family farm near Bailey, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Jordan) Dunlay. She graduated in 1926 from Riceville High School and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years, receiving her Teaching Certificate. She then taught in various country schools in the area.

Rose married Melvin Meyer on May 18, 1935, in Riceville.

In 1946, Rose and Melvin purchased the general store in New Haven with Rose's sister, Irene, and her husband, Venie Weber, and called it "Meyer & Weber General & Feed Store." They ran the store until 1981, when they sold the store and moved to Osage.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Melvin and Rose built and maintained Lake Melrose in New Haven.

Rose is survived by 13 nephews and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin, in 1987; four sisters: Irene Weber, Ellen Becvar, Kathryn Dunlay and Mary Dunlay; brother, Robert Dunlay; two brothers-in-law, Venie Weber and George Becvar; sister-in-law, Letha Dunlay, and a niece, Beverly Keim.

CHARLES CITY - Stanley Monroe, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, (Feb. 26, 2006) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Stanley Monroe will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Phil Coor will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Stanley Thomas Monroe was born on Oct. 16, 1914, at Bassett, the son of Guy and Geneva "Tillie" (Hills) Monroe. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1932. All of his 91 years were lived in the Iowa he loved.

On Aug. 31, 1940, he was united in marriage to Velma Anderson at Osage. For decades, Stan operated the Sinclair station, and later, FS bulk plants, delivering gasoline and diesel to area farmers and heating oil to Charles City homes. Never did a Christmas go by when Stan wouldn't leave his warm house to drag an oil hose through the snow to some chilly soul who forgot to fill up. He was a 60-year-plus member of the First Congregational Church, active in the Congregational Men's Fellowship, the Knights of Pythias for more than 50 years, Elks and Kiwanis. Stan loved to fish and play golf and was very proud of having helped build both of Charles City's golf course

Stanley was a wonderful husband to Velma for more than 65 years, a proud and supportive father, a devoted son, grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law and most of all, a good friend to everyone. Stan was as honest as the day is long and always advised to "live life so you don't have to be looking over your shoulder." One of the better quotes from this man known for his quick wit and generous heart was, "The trouble with life is, you can't get out of it alive." Stan was a simple man from a time when character really meant something. He was not rich but his legacy is. His departure leaves a hole in many hearts that cannot be filled.

Living family members include his loving wife, Velma of Charles City; two sons, Craig (Sharyn) Monroe of Denver, Colo., and Tom (Patti) Monroe of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Monroe; and a sister, "Deeta" Zierath.

ROCKWELL - Sherman LeRoy Zea, 78, of Rockwell, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006).

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Sherman LeRoy (Bud) Zea was born May 13, 1927, the son of Edgar Dean and Etta May (Grossman) Zea in Mason City, Iowa. Sherman was baptized and attended the Methodist Church while growing up in Mason City. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 while a junior, was honorably discharged, and returned to Mason City High School, graduating in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and while stationed at Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, Tech Sgt. Zea was honored as Airman of the Month.

Sherman was united in marriage to Maxine Marzen on Nov. 11, 1951, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1953, Sherman and Maxine spent 18 years farming and raising their four daughters in the Dougherty area. After retiring from farming, they moved to Rockwell where Sherman served on the City Council for many years. Sherman worked as an ag agronomist in the area, retiring from Weiner's Elevator in Cartersville.

Sherman loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their sporting events, school functions, birthday parties and all family celebrations. His hobbies included traveling, fishing trips with co-workers and friends, planting flowers, feeding and watching the birds with Maxine in their back yard and reading western novels. Sherman enjoyed spending time with Cory at Don's Auto Shop and with his son-in-law, John Ries, at his shop. Sherman's recent highlights included welcoming home from Iraq celebrations with his grandson, 1st Lt. Christopher Collins, and attending the Barret Jackson Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., with John and Mitchell Ries. Sherman was a very devoted husband. He and Maxine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family in 2001 in Sioux City.

Sherman will be missed by all that knew him and cherished memories of his life will be lovingly held. His life was full of simple enjoyments: family and friends, jokes, laughter and watching crops and livestock grow in the Iowa countryside from behind the wheel of his little red truck.

KANAWHA - Alice C. Abbas, 91, of Kanawha, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006) at USA Healthcare Center in Clarion.

Funeral services for Alice Abbas will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Kanawha Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church today.

Alice was born Oct. 13, 1914, at the Thompson family farm, four miles south of Kanawha. She was the daughter of Abe M. Thompson and Cora (Nelson) Thompson. She married George D. Abbas on March 15, 1939. He died on July 28, 1989. Alice and George were members of Kanawha Christian Reformed Church.

After graduation from Kanawha High School, Mrs. Abbas attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and taught in the Norway Township Rural Schools for three years. She then attended Lutheran Deaconess Hospital (now Lutheran Hospital) Chicago, Ill., and graduated in 1938 with an RN degree. After her marriage to George, she returned to teaching and taught the children she so cared about for a total of 26 years. She graduated from Drake University College of Education in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1970.

Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed and cherished her faith, family and friends. Life-long learning, reading, poetry, word puzzles, painting and woodcarving were among her many interests. She accepted all people and lived her life on the "sunny side of the street."

Alice is survived by three sons, David (Lois-deceased) of Kanawha, Robert of Cedar Falls and Thomas (Rebecca) of Waterloo; two brothers and two sisters, Thomas Thompson (Elsa) of Ames, Abe Thompson (Lois-deceased) of Las Vegas, Nev., Jan Nichelson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ruth Popp (Steve) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant sister, Esther; and sister, Inez (Marlin) Scherzinger of Fort Worth, Texas.

Mildred was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Rice, Minn., the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Froesh) Deets.

In her childhood years, she resided in Rockwell and Rock Falls. She married Clifford A. Austin on June 5, 1949, in Nora Springs. She worked at Park Hospital, Good Shepherd Health Center, and the Gerard School, where she retired in 1987.

Mildred enjoyed making quilts, sewing, playing board games and playing her favorite card game, "500." Mildred's family was important to her and she especially enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

BELMOND - Mervin B. "Danny" Dannewitz died Monday (Feb. 27, 2006) at the Westview Care Center in Britt at the age of 92.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday (March 3, 2006) at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Mr. Dannewitz was born Oct. 3, 1913, at Ayrshire, Iowa, the son of John E. Dannewitz and Edna Pendlebury Dannewitz. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1930.

Danny was a sports enthusiast! He was a member of the football, basketball, track, and baseball teams in high school. He continued his love for sports for many years by being involved as a coach, official, or volunteer.

Danny established Model Cleaners in Belmond; and he sold it in 1956. He was then employed by General Mills for nine years in Belmond. Later on, he managed feed mills in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, La Junta, Colo., and Klemme.

He is survived by his two daughters, Betty of Hazelton, and Karen, wife of Richard Floy, of Thornton. Also surviving are four sons, John and his wife, Beverly, of Napa, Calif., Michael and his wife, Karen, of Mesa, Ariz., Mark and his wife, Shannon, of Elk Grove, Calif., and Randy and his wife, Lyndi, of Sebastopol, Calif. Danny also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Schoonmaker; and a brother, Dean and his wife, Mary Ann.

Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery outside of Belmond.

Funeral services for Bobbie Lee will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Racine, Minn., with the Rev. Victoria Ashley presiding.

Bobbie Laverne Lee was born on May 7, 1930, in rural Madrid in Polk County, Iowa, to Bert and Mildred Lee.

Bobbie grew up on the family farm and attended rural school and worked on the family farm. He married Mavis Sorensen on July 13, 1952, at the Thornton Methodist Church in Thornton. To this union five sons were born. Together, he and Mavis farmed in Iowa before moving to their present farm in Minnesota in 1971.

Bobbie served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves at Charles City. He enjoyed fishing, driving horse teams, going to sale barns, raising cattle and getting together with friends for coffee.

He is survived by his wife Mavis; sons, Steven of Spring Valley, Minn., Donald Gene of Elba, Minn., Douglas (MaryAnn) of Spring Valley and Larry L. (Barb) of Spring Valley; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Richard, Oliver, Bert, Russell and Dwight; one sister, Valinette Park; and one son, Daryl.

He was a 60-year-plus member of the First Congregational Church, active in the Congregational Men's Fellowship, the Knights of Pythias for more than 50 years, Elks and Kiwanis. Stan loved to fish and play golf and was very proud of having helped build both of Charles City's golf course

Stanley was a wonderful husband to Velma for more than 65 years, a proud and supportive father, a devoted son, grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law and most of all, a good friend to everyone. Stan was as honest as the day is long and always advised to "live life so you don't have to be looking over your shoulder." One of the better quotes from this man known for his quick wit and generous heart was, "The trouble with life is, you can't get out of it alive." Stan was a simple man from a time when character really meant something. He was not rich but his legacy is. His departure leaves a hole in many hearts that cannot be filled.

Living family members include his loving wife, Velma of Charles City; two sons, Craig (Sharyn) Monroe of Denver, Colo., and Tom (Patti) Monroe of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Monroe; and a sister, "Deeta" Zierath.

CHINO VALLEY, Ariz. - Marie K. Vaag, of Chino Valley, Ariz., formerly of Forest City and Bode, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at Las Fuentes Care Center in Prescott, Ariz., at the age of 98 years.

Marie Katherine Vaag, daughter of Nels M. and Dorothea (Dahle) Helle was born on May 4, 1907, on a farm west of Scarville. At three weeks of age, her mother took her to the prairies of North Dakota near Montpelier where her father was homesteading.

On Sept. 12, 1927, Marie married Alfred P. Vaag on the home farm place. Alfred and Marie made their home in Bode where three children were born to them: Dolores, Darlene and Dennis. Alfred died on April 20, 1958, leaving Marie a 51-year-old widow. In August, 1958, she moved to Forest City where her daughter, Dolores, lived. She worked several jobs while simultaneously being a companion to older women who needed her help. She was a nurse's aide, a receptionist at Dr. H.R. Wilson's optometrist office and a telephone operator and receptionist at Waldorf College until her retirement.

Her strong faith in Jesus, her Lord and Savior, were evident to all who knew her and she had a ministry of knitting small children's sweaters and baby afghans for children through missions all over the world from South America to Africa, Russia, China and Mexico. Hundreds of children have been kept warm by her labor of love.

Marie was a person who loved people and had a compassion for all and will be greatly missed.

At the age of 98, she made a move from Forest City to Chino Valley, Ariz., and really enjoyed the view of the mountains and wildlife.

Left to remember her are her daughters, Dolores Bartleson (Hanford) of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Darlene Walsh of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Elaine Vaag of Omaha, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Verna (Helle) Miller of Humboldt and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred Vaag; son, Dennis Vaag in 2002; son-in-law, Jerry Walsh in 2003; a sister, Inga Hanson; brother, Albert Helle; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of her life at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, rural Forest City, in early June, followed by inurnment next to her husband in Bode.

NEWMAN, Ga. - Allison E. Wible, 81, of Newman, Ga., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006) at his home.

His body was cremated. A private memorial service and burial will take place at a later date.

Allison Wible was born on Oct. 4, 1924, at Colwell, Iowa, the son of John and Marion (Randall) Wible. He attended several schools in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, graduating in Des Moines after completing his tour of duty in the Air Corps during World War II.

He was married to Margaret Janousek at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in 1955. He was employed in highway construction throughout his life and also taught the subject at the North Iowa Area Community College.

After his health began to fail, he and Margaret moved to a warmer climate to be nearer their son, John, and his family.

His life was his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren with all his heart. He always had a garden and gave away most of it to his family and friends. Allison also loved nature. He loved hunting and fishing, bird watching, deer, squirrels and rabbits. He was a member of the Mason City Loyal Order of Moose No. 1328.

Allison is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, John (Debra), Lyle (Sherry), and Michael Wible; two daughters, Linda (Roger) Booth and Lu Anne Wible; two sisters, Wanda (Jim) Johann, Pharr, Texas, and Belva (Bill) Vivian, Mason City; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marion Wible; his wife's parents, Jospeh and Mary Janousek; brother-in-law, John Janousek.

ROCKWELL - Sherman LeRoy Zea, 78, of Rockwell, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006).

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Sherman L. Zea Memorial Fund.

Sherman LeRoy (Bud) Zea was born May 13, 1927, the son of Edgar Dean and Etta May (Grossman) Zea in Mason City, Iowa. Sherman was baptized and attended the Methodist Church while growing up in Mason City. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 while a junior, was honorably discharged, and returned to Mason City High School, graduating in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and while stationed at Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, Tech Sgt. Zea was honored as Airman of the Month.

Sherman was united in marriage to Maxine Marzen on Nov. 11, 1951, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1953, Sherman and Maxine spent 18 years farming and raising their four daughters in the Dougherty area. After retiring from farming, they moved to Rockwell where Sherman served on the City Council for many years. Sherman worked as an ag agronomist in the area, retiring from Weiner's Elevator in Cartersville.

Sherman loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their sporting events, school functions, birthday parties and all family celebrations. His hobbies included traveling, fishing trips with co-workers and friends, planting flowers, feeding and watching the birds with Maxine in their back yard and reading western novels. Sherman enjoyed spending time with Cory at Don's Auto Shop and with his son-in-law, John Ries, at his shop. Sherman's recent highlights included welcoming home from Iraq celebrations with his grandson, 1st Lt. Christopher Collins, and attending the Barret Jackson Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., with John and Mitchell Ries. Sherman was a very devoted husband. He and Maxine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family in 2001 in Sioux City.

Sherman will be missed by all that knew him and cherished memories of his life will be lovingly held. His life was full of simple enjoyments: family and friends, jokes, laughter and watching crops and livestock grow in the Iowa countryside from behind the wheel of his little red truck.

Sherman is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maxine Zea of Rockwell; their children, Susan (Craig) Kundert of Mason City, Debra (Mike) Weese of Hampton, Lynette (John) Ries of Rockwell, and Jackie (Chris) Frenz of Mason City; grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Kundert of Mason City, Joy (Chris) Bogenrief of Sioux City, Christopher Collins of Hinesville, Ga., Justin and Mitchell Ries of Rockwell, and Kelsey, Isaac, Nicholas and Jessa Frenz of Mason City; step grandchildren, Jason (Bev) Weese of Mason City and Heidi Weese of Clear Lake; great-grandchildren, Blake, Ben and Adeline Bogenrief of Sioux City, step great-grandchildren, Ashley and Emily Weese of Mason City; a brother, Bob (Becky) Zea of Des Moines; many nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; brothers and sisters in-law: Ruby Zea of Mason City, Charles (Joyce) Marzen of Marble Rock, Peggy Marzen of Marble Rock, Max (Virginia) Marzen of New Albin, Joan Nettleton of Greene and Charlene (Donald) of Waukegan, Ill.; aunts, Maude Kuzara and Pearl Stevens.
