Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct them to the family in care of Darlene's daughter Lora Carpenter.

Opal "Darlene" Wilkinson, the daughter of Eugene Walding and Kittie Laura (Holland) Wilkinson, was born on Sept. 12, 1924, at Mason City, Iowa.

Darlene attended Mason City public schools. She was united in marriage to Paul William Baack on May 28, 1946, at Troy, Missouri. Following their marriage the couple farmed east of Klemme and raised their two children, Lora and Larry.

Darlene was a lifelong homemaker and partner on the farm. She had also worked for many years in the health care profession both at the Park Hospital in Mason City and in the Food Service Department at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Her first and foremost love in life was spending time with her family and her husband's family. She was very close with her granddaughters. Darlene enjoyed flowers and liked to work word search puzzles.

She was an excellent cook and made excellent homemade breads and other baked items such as Cherry Goo Bars, homemade caramels, and oatmeal cookies which her family will remember the wonderful smells and tastes in her kitchen. A favorite pastime for her family was spending Sunday afternoons with each other over one of Darlene's delicious dinners she made for them. In earlier years she also did a lot of canning of her produce.

In more recent years, Darlene and her son would often spend time touring the countryside, going out to eat, or driving to see Darlene's daughter Lora's family in Mason City. Usually if you saw Darlene, her son Larry was not far away. She enjoyed bus excursions to various casinos around the region. Those who knew Darlene will remember her pleasant smile, the twinkle in her eye, her gentle personality, and the warm love she had for others.

Arzberger, Judy Fern "Ardy"

MURRIETTA, Calif. - Judy "Ardy" Fern Arzberger, 56, of Murrieta, Calif., and Excelsior, Minn., passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 16, 2006, surrounded by loving family after a short, courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Judy was born to Rueben and Marge Arzberger on March 17, 1949, in Grafton. She attended grade school at Grafton and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1967.

She moved to Minneapolis and worked for Prudential Life Insurance. In 1977, she moved to San Diego and began working as a receptionist and in customer service for the Moore Corp., a printing company located in Mira Mesa. She transferred back to Minneapolis in 1980.

Her love for the ocean and the beach drew her back to Long Beach, Calif., in 1987, where she continued working in the sales department of the Moore Corp. In the past few years, she was employed by Trans Western Publishing where she worked as a salesperson until her hospitalization in August 2005.

She met her husband, Robert, through her work. On Aug. 8, 1992, they were married and made their home in Southern California and Excelsior, Minn. They enjoyed many happy times socializing with family and friends at their condo in Murrieta, Calif., where "Ardy" passed away.

"Ardy," as she was affectionately called by family and friends, loved the ocean, the lake country of Minnesota, her dog, Maggie, gardening, and finding her "treasures" while garage-sale shopping through out the Temecula/Murrieta Valley.

Ardy was preceded by her parents, Marge and Reuben, of Grafton, and her Westie Terra.

Miller; stepsons, Jeff and Rob Miller of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Jane (Joel) Klapperich of Stacyville, Iowa; brother, Steve (Kristy) Arzberger of Plymouth; her beloved Westie, Maggie; nephews, Jesse (Melissa) Klapperich, Scott Klapperich, Ande (Mindy) Klapperich and Zane Arzberger; nieces, Laura (Jamie) Huisman and Vanessa Arzberger; and great-niece and nephew, Olivia Huisman and Gavin Klapperich. And many close friends who will miss her dearly.

By God's grace, Ardy was a Christian. Diagnosed with cancer in August 2005, it wasn't long before it became clear she would not recover. As the months passed and death approached, she became stronger in her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior. We have this confidence that God's promised her soul is with her Lord and Savior.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct them to the American Cancer Society.

Thiele, Lawrence H. "Larry"

MESA, Ariz. - Just before midnight on Friday (Feb. 17, 2006) Lawrence H. "Larry" Thiele died peacefully in his sleep at Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.

Larry and Norma, his wife of 36 years, had wintered in Arizona since 1978, and in July 2001, they sold their Ventura, Iowa, farm and made Arizona their permanent home.

Outgoing and quick to make new friends, Larry delighted family and friends alike with his charm, wit and extraordinary sense of humor.

Calling on his experience as farmer, mechanic, truck driver, inventor and welder, Larry refused to believe any man-made device to be beyond repair, and frequently extended the life of numerous appliances and mechanical parts by rebuilding or even modifying them. In many instances, Larry would invent and fabricate an improved replacement.

Born on Jan. 4, 1915, Larry had recently celebrated his 91st birthday at his favorite birthday restaurant, downing his annual impressive quantity of pizza followed by an ice cream cone for desert.

Until his recent heroic battle with pneumonia, Larry continued to perform routine maintenance on his mini-van, including brake repair and oil changes.

He exercised daily, enjoyed frequent games of pool at the clubhouse, waved cheerfully to his friends and neighbors while on his daily bicycle ride, and continually looked for projects to keep his body and mind active.

As one of the earliest Orangewood Shadows residents, Larry was fondly addressed as "Mayor" by several Orangewood neighbors.

Larry is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter, Susan Feld of Everett, Wash.; stepson and daughter-in-law, Bob and Linda Cody of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Deb and Denny Morris of Meridian, Idaho; three brothers, Harold from Elma, Iowa, Leo of Austin, Minn., and Henry, living in Peoria, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Thiele; sister, Clara Bayers; daughter, Cindy Wirtz, and grandson, Troy Wirtz.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bunker Funeral Home, at 3529 E. University Drive in Mesa, Ariz., with a reception immediately after at the clubhouse at Orangewood Shadows, 3165 E. University, Mesa, Ariz.

Torkelson, Othelia C.

FOREST CITY - Othelia C. Torkelson, 94, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Feb. 22, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Ellington Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church.

Othelia Cornelia Torkelson, the daughter of Osmund and Bessie (Olson) Torkelson, was born near Humboldt on April 21, 1911. The family moved to a farm near Thompson, Iowa, where Othelia met and married Clarence Torkelson.

Othelia was a lifelong homemaker while she and Clarence raised nine children. Later in life, she started the career she totally loved and had been in training for almost her whole life, a cook at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

God came first in her life followed closely by her family. Her family and friends will remember her warm and caring ways. Othelia's children all feel they were especially blessed to have her as a mother.

Her heart had a special spot for each of her 26 grandchildren whom she lived to spend time with. Each one of them has special memories of times spent with her. She was definitely a cookie-baking grandma.

Othelia's love of music was instilled in all her children. She taught herself to play the piano and read music like a professional, a skill she used for many years as her church's organist. She was especially proud of any grandchild's music ability and was an encouraging force in their involvement in music.

Othelia's children and grandchildren witnessed her boundless love of God's creatures. Birds, numerous cats and dogs, and children found a safe haven in her care.

Othelia was born to teach. Her home became a classroom to her family and friends. She especially loved to teach the story of Jesus' love, but you could also have lessons in baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, canning, baby care, animal care, music, wallpapering, quilting, gardening and any part of nature.

Othelia was a lifelong learner. She was an avid reader and loved to complete crossword puzzles. She could master any craft she tried, soon becoming the person who taught others her newly learned skill. She loved to travel and was especially proud of her trip to Mount St. Helens soon after it erupted. In her late 60s, she was the proud owner of her first car and the driver's license she worked hard to obtain.

You would often find her family gathered at her house on Sundays experiencing a delicious meal and special time together. Her children remember special foods she would make just for them. She always had a very special relationship with all her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law and found a very special spot in that big heart of hers just for them.

Othelia loved to spend time with her brothers and sisters. She spent many happy hours quilting at her sister Thelma's house.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her children: Margie Sogard of Ames, Bernice Voelker of Charles City, Carroll Torkelson of Fertile, Ronald (Lucille) Torkelson, Leslie (Paulette) Torkelson, Roger Torkelson, Wayne Torkelson and Marsha (Mark) Brunsvold, all of Forest City; 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Orrin Torkelson, and sisters: Lavina Askeland, Thelma Sunde, Louise Jermeland, Julaine Albertson and Darlene Hanna. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Linda Kesler and Bonnie Torkelson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; son, Clarence Junior; daughter, Margie Helen; and grandchildren, Lisa Tate, Hollis, Debra and LaRae Torkelson. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Joe, Clifford, John, Arthur, John and Myrtle.
