Richard L. Csomay |
|
KANAWHA - Richard L. Csomay, of Kanawha and Tarzana, Calif., passed away late Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19, 2005) the day after his 78th birthday, in the Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral services for Richard Csomay will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with the Rev. Cynthia Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Richard was born in Hartford, Conn., to John and Elizabeth Mandl Csomay, both of whom were Hungarian immigrants. Dick, as he was known to his friends, always took great pride in his pure Hungarian heritage.
Dick got his early education in the Catholic parochial schools, but his introduction to the clarinet while in junior high shaped his life of music. He soon added the saxophone to his accomplishments, and while finishing his senior year at Hartford High, he was invited to join Blue Baron's big band, which toured much of the eastern half of the country.
After several years, he turned to serious music education at Hartt Conservatory, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. During this time he played first oboe in the Hartford Symphony while continuing casuals and private teaching.
An audition for a flute/piccolo chair in the United States Marine Band stationed in Washington, D.C., earned him membership in this select unit known as "The President's Own," the band appearing at all White House functions and national tours.
Earning a doctorate at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia preceded his teaching position at Baldwin Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, where he met the love of his life, Barbara Rankin, who was teaching nearby. They were married in Pasadena in 1968, for by this time, Dick was playing in the Hollywood studios.
Farming in Iowa was a new fascination for him and working together with Barb was what he liked. The travel back and forth from California gave him the call to learn to fly, get a license, and get a plane, and this he did.
As much as Dick enjoyed his busy life, the travel he and Barb did and the friends that he cherished, what he loved was just being at home with Barb. This last year when he wasn't able to be at home was very hard for him, but now he is Home.
Dick is survived by Barb, his beloved wife of 37 years, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; three sisters and their spouses; and Barbara's brother.

Maurine C. Osheim
LAKE MILLS — Maurine C. Osheim, 93, of Lake Mills, formerly of Kiester, Minn., died Tuesday (Nov. 22, 2005) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minn., with the Rev. Richard Steffen officiating. Burial will take place at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery, Kiester, Minn.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Maurine Clara Hesby was born on a farm near Zearing, Iowa, on Jan. 6, 1912, to John and Dena (Thorson) Hesby. She was the third of five children. In 1924, she moved with her family to a farm near Thompson. Maurine attended confirmation classes and was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson. In 1930, she graduated from Thompson High School. Maurine attended the Lake Mills Normal Training School and graduated in May 1931. She said, “I got lucky!” and was hired to teach at her home school. She received only half of the salary during the year, waiting until summer for the balance after the local taxes were received.
In order to finish the evening chores early one Saturday, Maurine set the clocks ahead by 30 minutes. When the chores were done, she went with her folks to Thompson. Helmer Osheim asked her to ride with him to Forest City in a Model A. From that time on, he drove out to her parents’ farm on Saturday nights. Maurine and Helmer were united in marriage on June 16, 1935, at 10 a.m. in the parsonage of Pastor Fretheim in Scarville, Iowa.
In 1937, Maurine and Helmer moved to a farm by Walters, Minn. They purchased their “home” place two miles east of Kiester, Minn., in 1943. Maurine was excited about this purchase and was eager to move because this farm house met her expectations. It had an indoor bathroom. She spent many hours planting flowers, tending the garden, and making certain that “the men had some lunch.” In the mid-60s, she wanted to remodel her kitchen, so she found a job. Maurine worked for Winnebago Industries and saved her money for this project. She embroidered quilt squares and hand-quilted quilts for each of her children. The grandchildren cherish the crocheted afghans Grandma made. And the kringla, well, only Grandma’s were acceptable, and what are the holidays without lefse?
In September 1998, Helmer and Maurine moved to a home in Lake Mills, and in April 2005, moved into Mills Harbour, Lake Mills, Iowa.
Maurine is survived by Helmer, her husband of more than 70 years; two daughters, Marcia (Jerry) Bergeson of Radcliffe and Gloria (Doug) Fallgatter of Northwood; two sons, Roger (Sandi) Osheim of Emmons, Minn., and Phil (Tamera) Osheim of Mahtomedi, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Todd (Susan) Bergeson of Alpharetta, Ga., Tim (Sherry) Bergeson of Los Gatos, Calif., Tony Osheim of San Clemente, Calif., Cindy (Joe) Galli of Glyndon, Md., Angie (Justin) Senne of Northwood, Melissa (Mike) Michaelis of Mankato, Minn., Holly Fallgatter and fiance, Greg Hankins, of Coralville, Jenna (Josh) Cadwell of Richland, Wash., Trisha Osheim of Altoona, Wis., and Christa Osheim of Mahtomedi, Minn.; six great-grandchildren, Cassie and Kate Bergeson of Los Gatos, Calif., Lauren Bergeson of Alpharetta, Ga., Alexander Galli of Glyndon, Md., and Kayla and Nolan Senne of Northwood; a sister, Bernice Kloster of Lake Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.
