Omer B. Kelley Jr.
BELMOND — Omer B. Kelley Jr., 84, a resident of Belmond and longtime resident of the Belmond Community Apartments, died Monday (Oct. 31, 2005) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Belmond United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Druhl will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Belmond Area Military Funeral Unit.
Visitation will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday. The family suggests memorials to the family or to the donor’s choice.
Omer Burnett Kelley Jr. was born Nov. 2, 1920, at Wellman, the son of Omer B. Kelley Sr. and Josephine Belle (Fuller) Kelley.
He attended Belmond Community Schools. He then went into the military service, serving in the United States Navy during World War II. His military tenure of nearly three and one-half years at sea began in May of 1942, and continued until he was honorably discharged in October 1945.
During his time in the Navy. he spent time on three different destroyers, including the USS Lewis Hancock and USS Upshur. His missions included being a part of escorts for Admiral Halsey’s trek to Hiroshima and General MacArthur’s tour of duty.
Awards he received during his tenure included the Asiatic Pacific, one Silver Star and one Bronze Star, two bronze stars-Philippine Liberation, a Eur-African ribbon and C.O. Commendation. His rank at the time of discharge was a water tender second class.
Throughout most of his working life Omer had worked as a laborer. In earlier years, he was a mechanic at Ed Kennedy’s Garage in Belmond. He later worked for periods of time at Central Soya and Acco Seeds prior to retiring.
Spending time with his family was the number one joy in his life. He loved the outdoors and the family looked forward to going on Sunday afternoon fishing excursions to Clear Lake. Omer also loved to go hunting in earlier years and spending time with his German Shepherd “Bootie.”
Omer always raised a large garden and was an excellent baker and cook. His family will remember the beef jerky, homemade rolls, jellies, carmels and baked bread. Omer always made sure there was plenty to go around for everyone, whether it was his cooking delights, or other creations he made such as hook rugs. He had many favorite past times such as making black powder guns, working puzzles, or following one of his favorite sports teams — the Packers, Hawkeyes and Yankees.
He also had a passion for NASCAR racing and was an avid fan of Richard Petty and more recently Ryan Newman. Family will remember him as a lifelong motor enthusiast, who enjoyed muscle cars and was always tinkering on cars and even recently reading up on new engines that were being manufactured.
They will miss conversing with him about his political views and bantering with him about his staunch Democratic beliefs.Though he was a reserved person, he always wore the pride for his wife, family and his country on his heart.
Omer was a lifetime and charter member of the VFW and also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife of almost 60 years, Irene, of Belmond; his son, Danny, and wife, Barb Kelley, Somerset, Fla., and their son, Scott; Joe and wife, Marcia Kelley, and their children, John and wife, Sherry Kelley, Norwalk, Lisa and husband, Lance Gibson, Ames, and Tim and wife, Kelle Kelley and their children, Tony Kelley and fiancee, Lacey Hrubes, Nicole, and Cole, Belmond; daughters, Kathy and husband Steve Gardner, Urbandale, and Laurie and husband Dennis Nelson and their children, Jennifer and husband Mark Armour, and Josh Nelson, of Belmond; a sister Doris “Dee Dee” and husband Earl Cronk, Belmond; and seven great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sarah, Maranda, Zach, Lindsay, Cameron, and Amara.

Chuck was born at Stronghurt, Ill., on July 24,1927, the son of Charles O. Ring and Vera Miller Ring. He was honored by being baptized by his grandfather, Charles Edward Ring, who was a Methodist minister. Chuck moved a lot so he attended many schools in Illinois.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Having a bonfire and visiting with the other campers was a joy to Chuck. Gardening was something he marveled at. He saw what God could make out of those little seeds and plants. What a miracle that was to watch and provide food for the winter.
Charles loved life and admired all of God’s creations. Charles served in the Army in 1945 and then again in 1950 serving in both Germany and Korea. He worked many jobs in his lifetime, but he retired after 30 years from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition and various other federal organizations.
Charles was married to Thelma Beck in 1948 and to this union two children were born. He had the great pleasure of taking in three foster children and felt it was a wonderful feeling to help someone in need. He assisted special needs children in bowling in Des Moines and also was a Little League coach when his children were involved.
He was married to Bernice Nelson Ring in 1978. Bernice died in 1991.
On Jan. 25, 1992, he was married to Charlotte Helps. Together they resided in Mason City. He was very active in volunteer work, taking part in the Care Review Board for Good Shepherd Health Center, North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, prepared income taxes for the AARP at the Senior Citizens Center, and he was a trustee and a member of other boards at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Chuck was also president of the East Village Home Owner’s Association and was awarded the Giving Your Best Award for volunteering of his time. Chuck was a champion bowler for many years — even while in a wheelchair.
Those left to cherish his memory and the joy of living life to the fullest every day are his wife, Charlotte Helps Ring of Mason City; son, Terry Ring of Durand; daughter, Pamela Ring Fauble of Delavan, Ill.; sisters, Jo Sutter of Mt. Pleasant and Sue Perry of Burlington; grandchildren, Brandy White, Aaron White and Amanda Ring; great-granddaughter, Laney White; stepchildren, Randy and Barb Helps of Ankeny, Gary and Ronda Killam of Glendale, Ariz., Rick and Julie Helps of Johnston; stepgrandchildren, Christopher Helps, Chris and Cali Jermeir, Eric and Heather Killam, Amy Killam, Ryan Helps and Jessica Helps; step-great grandchildren, Bryce and Ellie Jermier and Ethan Killam. He has many nieces and nephews and a host of good friends.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ring; mother, Vera Tilton; step-father, Wiley Tilton; and two wives, Thelma Beck Ring and Bernice Nelson Ring.
Even though he had cancer, Chuck believed that each day was truly a gift of life to enjoy and each moment a treasure. Chuck knew he was going to a better life of peace. Chuck lived by this motto: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a present; live each day to the fullest.”
