James L. ‘Jim' Palmer

CLEAR LAKE — James L. "Jim" Palmer, 69, of 1402 N. 24th St., died Friday (June 24, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., with Pastor Jan Burnett officiating.  A private family inurnment service will take place on Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and also for one hour prior  to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Jim Palmer Memorial Fund.

Jim was born Oct. 29, 1935, in Menomonee, Wis., a son of Adam and Elma (Meninger) Palmer. He graduated from high school in Delavan, Minn., and continued his education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn. He later earned his master's degree from Northeast Missouri State University   in Kirksville, Mo.

Jim married the love of his life, Shirley Kirkeide, on June 23, 1957, in Easton, Minn. The couple moved to northern Iowa where Jim worked as a special education teacher first in Britt, and then for the Hancock County school system. He then began a more than 30-year career as a special education consultant for Northern Trails Area Education Agency. He worked tirelessly at schools all around the North Iowa area to make sure that the lives of children with special needs were enriched. Jim also taught at the Mason City campus of Buena Vista University for eight years, training future special education instructors.

When he wasn't devoting his time to special needs children Jim enjoyed woodworking and traveling. His favorite destination was Plymouth, Mass. He loved to joke around, especially with his large extended family, and enjoyed many activities with his grandchildren. Jim was a faithful member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church and ARC.

Jim will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Shirley, of Clear Lake; his son, Mark Palmer and his wife, Amy, of Clear Lake; two daughters: Melody Scheetz and her husband, John, and Jennifer Palmer, all of El Paso, Texas; eight grand  children: Adam, Andrew, Stephanie, Samantha and Zachary Palmer, Keely and Heather Scheetz, and Alexander Palmer. He is also survived by one brother, Gene Palmer of Mason City; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Fuss and her husband, Mike, of Milwaukee; and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son,  Jeffrey Palmer, in 1989.

John R. Wubbena


IOWA FALLS — John R. Wubbena, 102, of Coulter, Iowa, passed away Friday (June 24, 2005) at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services for John R. Wubbena will be 1:30 p.m. at Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont with the Rev. Bob Scholten presiding. Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

John was born on Nov. 6, 1902, to John and Carrie (Jensen) Wubbena south of Bristow, Iowa.

John was married to Martha Viet on Jan. 1, 1931, in Dumont, Iowa. He worked as a laborer and did custom corn shelling and feed grinding. He also mowed ditches for the county for many years. John was a member of Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont, Iowa.

He is survived by his son, Willis (Connie) Wubbena of Iowa Falls; daughter, Mabel (Wesley) Meyer of Hampton; son, Carlton (Beverly) Wubbena of N. San Juan, Calif.; grandchildren, Duane (Becky) Wubbena of Iowa Falls, Diane Benyshek of Lisbon, Donna Wubbena of Iowa Falls, Colette (Kevin) Westaby of Belmond, Kim Meyer of Pleasant Hill, Lu Jean (Bond) Howery of Huber Heights, Ohio, Cherie Lewis of Sheridan, Mont., Marla (Bob) Aguiar of Fresno, Calif., and Carla Kindorf of Byron, Calif.; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Irma; sister, Gen; and one grandson, Marty Wubbena.

Elmer Litterer

CHARLES CITY — Elmer Litterer, 82, of Charles City, died Sunday (June 26, 2005) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elmer Litterer will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gayle Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service.

Elmer William Litterer was born on January 27, 1923, on the family farm in southern Floyd County, the son of William F. and Marie (Scheidecker) Litterer. He was raised on the same farm, which is now a Century Farm, and received his education at a Floyd County country school.

On October 21, 1945, he was united in marriage to Majoyre "Gerry" Crooks at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed together on the Century Farm until Gerry's death on May 14, 1982.

Elmer remained on the farm until his marriage to Carol Darrow Blanchard on May 28, 1999, at which time he moved to Charles City.

Farming was Elmer's life and he always looked forward to visiting the farm and watching its progress.

Elmer was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Midi's, served on the board of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery in Nashua, Farm Bureau, Senior Citizens Center, Heritage Club and the Floyd County Historical Society.

Living family members include his wife, Carol Litterer, of Charles City; five children, Wayne Litterer of Clarksville, Ron (Jan) Litterer of Greene, Nancy (Ron) Fish of Nashua, Dennis Litterer of Nashua, and David (Barb) Litterer of Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step children, Lori "Blanchard" (Patrick) Byrne of Clear Lake, Kimberly (Christopher) Bienert of Forest City and Holly (Curtis) Jorgensen of Mason City; five step grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; a sister, Gladys (Lyle) Stauffer of Greene; and a brother-in-law, Dale Stauffer of Charles City.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a daughter, Marlene Litterer in 1959; a son-in-law, Dennis Katcher; and two sisters, Alice Stauffer and Edna Franke.

S. Merrill Kelley

OSAGE — S. Merrill Kelley, 88, of Osage, died Saturday (June 25, 2005) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Merrill was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Osage, the son of Benjamin "Frank" and Ellen (Bohl) Kelley. He attended school in Osage and graduated from Osage High School in 1933.

Merrill was united in marriage to Helene Tyrrell on June 14, 1936, in Osage. She died in 1945. Merrill served in World War II with the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment from 1944 to 1945.

 Merrill was united in marriage to Bernice Burns on Jan. 1, 1947, in Oelwein. Bernice died in 2002.

Merrill owned and operated Kelley's Stand, a produce market, from 1950 to 1961. He owned and operated Kelley's Realty for many years. He worked for the Osage Chamber of Commerce, and was a manager at Sunny Brae Golf Course.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage, the Osage Chamber of Commerce, Osage Rotary Club, and Sunny Brae Country Club and Golf Course. Merrill was also a life member of the Osage American Legion Post 278, and served on the Osage City Council. Many children in Osage referred to him as "Grandpa."

One of his hobbies was golf, and he was a golf instructor at North Iowa Area Community College for several years and taught a number of people in the area how to golf. He enjoyed writing, and for many years he wrote a weekly article called "Readers of the Fine Print" for the Mitchell County Press-News. Later in life, Merrill would winter in San Diego, Calif., and while there he was employed as a taxicab driver. 

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian and Lay Pastor Gary Gilbert officiating. A time of fellowship with friends and family will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Hospice of North Iowa, or the donor's choice.

He is survived by a daughter, Margery Johnsten and husband Richard of Great Falls, Mont.; a son, Merrill F. "Skip" Kelley and wife, Dee Dee of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;

He was preceded by his parents; two wives; and one brother, Maurice Francis Kelley.

RAKE — Lyle O. Quam, 75, of Rake, died Sunday (June 26, 2005) at his home in Rake.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake with Pastor Larry Rehlander, officiating. Burial will be in West Cemetery with military honors given by the Rake American Legion Color Guard.

Irene Quinn


RICEVILLE — Irene Quinn, 73, of Riceville passed away Tuesday (June 28, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a 15-year battle with cancer. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with a rosary at 5 p.m. and Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Irene was born June 18, 1932, at Pettibone (Kidder County) N.D. She was the youngest of five children born to Harry Milo Morse and Rose Roenna Neubauer Morse. Irene was affectionately called Tudy Morse by her family and friends in her younger years.

She married Bernard Quinn in Waterloo, Iowa, on Nov. 17, 1951. To this union one child was born; a son, Dan J. After their return from the service, they settled in Riceville, where Irene was employed by Riceville Veterinary Service for 32 years under many different veterinarians.

From 1998 to 2001, Irene was employed as clerk for the LeRoy Municipal Liquor store, LeRoy, Minn. In 2001, she started cashiering at Andy's Mini Mart in Riceville until the time of her death.

Irene spent her life devoted to her only child, son Dan J., and only grandchild, grandson Chad J. She loved the phrase Quinn's 3. Irene wanted to remembered by the phrase "I did the best I could." Irene will be remembered for her collection of pendant watches and was rarely seen without one. Irene enjoyed crocheting afghans. She was also an avid reader and had collected a library of hardcover books.

Survivors include her grandson, Chad J., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard in 1987; son, Dan J. in 2001; brothers, Wesley, Harold and Wayne; and her only sister, Lorraine.

HAMPTON — Dean A. Worden, 64, of Hampton died Monday (June 27, 2005) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Dean A. Worden was born Dec. 4, 1940, in Hampton, to Donald and Elizabeth (Moore) Worden.

He graduated from Franklin Consolidated Schools in Latimer.

He was united in marriage to Penny Bailey on Oct. 7, 1958 in Dows.

He was a semi driver all his life. He loved driving his truck.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Worden, of Hampton; daughter, Julie Flinchum, of Hampton; son, Greg Worden, of Hampton; granddaughter, Ashley Carroll, of Augusta, Ga.; granddaughter, Jamie Flinchum, of Hampton; granddaughter, Bailey Beebe, of Hampton; and granddaughter, Lindsay Worden, of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by parents; son, Jeffery Dean; and one sister, Diane Nielsen.

MINNESOTA CITY, Minn. — Marcia C. Jennings, 76, of Minnesota City, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (June 7, 2005) at her home.

Mildred Anderson


BRITT — Mildred Anderson, 94, of Britt passed away Sunday (June 26, 2005) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Mildred Marie Anderson was born June 21, 1911, on the family farm in Orthel Township in Hancock County, Iowa. She was the eldest of eight children born to Henry and Charsty Munson Anderson. Mildred attended country school in Orthel Township School. She then attended Britt High School, graduating in 1928, and Britt Junior College, graduating in 1930. Following graduation, she taught country school at Orthel Township School for 10 years and was teacher to two of her sisters: Blanche and Marlys.

After teaching 10 years, she decided she wanted to become a nurse. She attended nurse's training at Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn., and graduated in 1943.

She worked in surgery at Kahler Hospital for three years. She was a head nurse in the operating room and worked some with Dr. Chuck Mayo. She also worked for the Mayo Clinic Blood Bank, and then moved to Dubuque where she worked for the clinic for three years.

She moved to Little Rock, Ark., in 1951, where she worked in a doctor's office and surgery for 18 years and later worked in a hospital for eight years. Mildred retired in 1977 and returned to Britt.

Mildred enjoyed both teaching and nursing and was very good at both. Blanche and Marlys have many detailed workbooks Mildred made for them when they were her students. Mildred was an exceptional nurse and several of her nursing friends in other states, including her supervisor in Little Rock, maintain contact with her family.

Mildred was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Britt and a very devout Christian. She taught Sunday school at Second Baptist Church in Little Rock for many years and she made it a point to read her Bible through each year.

Dennis was born Dec. 10, 1946, in Mason City, the son of Raymond and Dorothy (Cornelius) Fuller. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1965.

Dennis married Garianne Waslick the following year. In 1967, he went to work for Lehigh Cement Co., where he worked 38 years. Dennis was past president of Lodge D106 International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Union.

A few of his interests included spending time with his grandchildren and their activities, Iowa State football games, Harley Davidson motorcycles and traveling to Arizona.

Dennis is survived by his children, Crystal Schuld and husband, Jeff, and their daughter, Marissa, of Phoenix, Ariz., Tammy Abney and husband, Brent, and their children, Austin and Bailey, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Tim Fuller and wife, Julie, and their children, Whitney, Hannah and Shea, of West Des Moines; fiancee, Cindy Bartusek and her children, Jason and Joe, of Mason City.

LAKE MILLS — Dorothy Leegaard, 83, of Lake Mills passed away on Wednesday (June 29, 2005) at her home in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church  in Lake Mills with the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home,  902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Dorothy Ione Ulve Leegaard was born Jan. 16, 1922, at the home of her parents, Walter and Inga (Tollefson) Ulve, in Center Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. She was baptized on March 19, 1922, and confirmed in her faith on May 23, 1937, both at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills by the Rev. O.R. Sletten. Dorothy attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

On Sept. 30, 1943, Dorothy was united in marriage with Palmer Leegaard at Emmons, Minn. To this union four children were born: Sandra, Gary, Diane and Susan.

Dorothy's life was centered around her family. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, especially baking goodies for them. Her free time was filled with writing poems, working crossword puzzles, reading, and keeping up to date by watching CNN. Dorothy was very gifted and loved to do handiwork. Beginning in 1990, she made 274 quilts and had sewed 979 rugs.

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters: Sandra Elwood and her husband, John, of Jordan, Minn., and Diane Clark and her husband, Bill, of Lake Mills; six grandchildren: Christi Grothe and her husband, Randy, of Lake Mills, Angie Sink and her husband, Kenny, of Belle Plaine, Minn., Samantha Hagen and her husband, Rodney, of Lake Mills, Mary Draheim and her husband, Tim, of Jordan, Minn., Cortnie Hanna and her husband, John, of Lake Mills, and Andy Aukes and his fiancee, Shannon Berger of Le Sueur, Minn.; eight great-grandchildren: Tabitha Rose, Natalie Hagen, Clint Hagen, Clay Hagen, Jonathan Draheim, Nicole Draheim, Craig Hanna and Kayla Hanna; two sisters: Luella Bolstad and her husband, Loren, of Lake Mills, and Alice Lackore and her husband, Duane, of Forest City; a brother, Vernon Ulve of Lake Mills; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Palmer, on April 22, 1981; a son, Gary Leegaard; a daughter, Susan Thon; a great-grandson, Jacob Grothe; one sister, Elnora Larson; and five brothers: Marvin, Wilford, Royden, Ellsworth, and Andrew Ulve.

CLEAR LAKE — Howard Pitkin, 82, 101 S. 17th St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (June 28, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake, with Pastor David Wiersbe officiating. Interment will  be held at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Ivan Pitkin Memorial Fund.

Ivan was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Austin and Nellie (Schwartz) Pitkin. He married Geraldine Smidt in 1943 in Mason City. Ivan farmed near Swaledale for three years and north of Clear Lake for 33 years. After retiring, they moved in to Clear Lake in 1983. He drove the Clear Lake School Bus for 22 years, retiring in 2004.

He loved going to coffee, working with wood and on cars. He always had something funny to say. He loved dogs, hunting with his brother and celebrating family birthdays and get-togethers.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Geraldine "Jeri" Pitkin, of Clear Lake; three children: Claryce Conroy and her husband, James, of Clear Lake, Gary Pitkin and his wife, Coleen, of South Sioux City, Neb., and Charlene Orozco, of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren: Clark Conroy, Christine Kuhlemeier, Brian Pitkin, Kyle Pitkin, Christopher Pitkin, Jason Bendickson and Justin Torres; seven great-grandchildren: Shanda, Laura, Tony, Koty, Hunter, Leah and Clayton; seven sisters-in-law: Luella Pitkin, of Andrews, Texas, Elaine Pitkin, of Clear Lake, Helen Smidt, of Mason City, Emily Block, of Mason City, Jenny Gourley, of Mason City, Helen Smidt, of Britt, and Evelyn Smidt, of Britt; and one brother-in-law, George Smidt Sr., of Mason City.

THORNTON — Calvin Jurgens, 82, of Thornton died Tuesday (June 28, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Art Zewert presiding. Interment will be in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Calvin Jurgens Memorial Fund.

Calvin Jurgens was born April 29, 1923, at the family farm near Chapin; a son of Toby and Ernstena (Koenen) Jurgens. Calvin David Jurgens was baptized at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, and later professed his faith at the same church. Calvin attended country school and liked to say he was the smartest kid in his class (he was the only one in his class). After the eighth grade, Calvin started farming with his father and brothers.

Jan. 30, 1945, was a special day for Calvin, for that was the day he was united in marriage with Dorothy Grace Rave in Little Rock, Iowa. They made their home near Chapin, later moving to farms near Latimer and Sheffield. In 1965, they purchased a farm near Thornton where he farmed the rest of his life.

Calvin was a lifetime member of Zion Reformed Church where he served several terms as deacon and elder. Calvin and Dorothy took their family on several memorable trips to both coasts and Hawaii. His joy, however, was farming, especially farrowing pigs. He enjoyed yard work and keeping the equipment clean and ready to go. He loved music and would play the piano and mandolin by ear. Family was the main source of joy for him and he truly loved his wife of 60 years and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; children, Evanette (Darwin) Broek, of Hospers, Darlene (Ivan) Wiersema, of Cherokee, Dean Jurgens, of Thornton, Kevin (Nan) Jurgens, of Thornton, Rosalind (Philip) Markwardt, of Thornton; grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda) Wiersema and son, Joshua, Jennifer (Keith) Probst and children, Madison and Allison, Jaylene (James) De Vos, Alana (Shelby) Steenhard, Elizabeth Whittington and daughter, Isabella, Alyssa (Jay) Claussen, Amanda, Sheldon, Ashley, Jordan and Spencer Jurgens, Candace, Tonya and Heather Markwardt; brothers, Jerry T. Ruth M. Neuberger, the daughter of John and Marie (Yahnke) Neuberger, was born June 26, 1902, on her parents' farm east of Klemme in a family of nine children. She attended Hancock County Rural School, where she graduated from the eighth grade.

As a young lady, Ruth began her lifelong devotion to her family. She helped to raise her brother, Merlin. Ruth was always willing to put the needs of others before those of her own. She was a diligent, hardworking, and independent lady who wasn't afraid to help out with various chores, including bean walking, picking corn, and babysitting for others.

For most of her working life she was employed in retail sales. She worked   at Wilson's Drug Store, Larson's Store, Thada's Grocery Store, and Kluckhohns Grocery Store in Klemme. Ruth had also worked for periods of time at the Garner and Clear Lake bakeries. She was a cook at Concord Care Center.

Ruth loved gardening and will be remembered for her beautiful flowers. She had a sweet tooth and especially enjoyed her strawberries, sugar cookies, homemade ice cream and chocolates. Other favorite foods were cheese and crackers and roast beef. Her morning coffee was her time of relaxation, as was time spent writing stories about everyday life happenings. Ruth was a meticulous housekeeper.

She was a member of Klemme United Methodist Church.

Ardis was born Nov. 23, 1940, the daughter of Elmer and Elinor (Nicewarner) Felker in Mason City. She graduated from Clear Lake High School and attended nurse's training at NIACC.

Ardis moved from Mason City to Des Moines, where she was an LPN at the VA Hospital. During her many years of service she was recognized as LPN of the year. Ardis then retired from the VA Hospital after 25 years of service and moved to Clear Lake.

She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and a devoted sister to her brother, Roger. Ardis enjoyed being outdoors, shopping and being with animals, especially her "Tippy Dogs."

Survivors include brother, Roger Felker of Clear Lake; aunts, Florence "Billy" Felker of Garner, and Ardis Nicewarner of Rockford; cousins, Ron Felker and wife, Ann, of Stockton, Mo., and Larry Felker and wife, Mary, of Plymouth, Minn.
