Russell William Armfield
CLEAR LAKE — Russell William Armfield,
89, of Clear Lake, died Monday (May 30,
2005) at the Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Richard Scott of Zion
Lutheran Church, Clear Lake,
officiating. Burial will be in the Zion
Reformed Church Cemetery in Sheffield.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Thursday and one hour prior to service
time on Friday at the chapel.
Russell William Armfield was born on
Oct. 15, 1915, in Franklin County, the
son of George and Mary (Sheperd)
Armfield. He attended and received his
education in the Hansell town school
system.
He was united in marriage to Tina
VanHorn on Feb. 22, 1940, in Sheffield.
She preceded him in death. Russell
farmed his entire life in the Sheffield
and Swaledale area before moving to
Clear Lake in 1975.
He was united in marriage to Elsie Shook
on Oct. 15, 1979, at the Little Brown
Church in Nashua.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing,
bowling, camping, traveling (especially
wintering in Yuma, Ariz.), and playing
pool and cards at the Senior Citizens
Center in Clear Lake, but his great love
and enjoyment was being a devoted
father, grandfather and
great-grandfather.
He was a member of the Senior Citizens
Center in Clear Lake, and was a former
member of the Zion Reform Church in
Sheffield, and attended the Evangelical
Free Church in Clear Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife,
Elsie Armfield, of Clear Lake; two sons,
Roger Armfield and his wife, Renett, of
Victoria, Texas, and Larry Armfield of
Garner; two step-sons, Roger Shook and
his wife, Alicia, of Stanwood, and Larry
Shook and his wife, Sharon, of Clear
Lake; two grandchildren, Dean and Daniel
Armfield; a great-grandson, Bret
Armfield; five step-grandchildren,
Matthew Shook and his wife, Heather,
Jenny Stolley and her husband, Doug,
Neil Shook and his wife, Cami, Julie
Muth and her husband, Shane, and Cory
Shook; nine step-great-grandchildren; a
brother, Kenneth Armfield and his wife,
Mildred, of Latimer; and a
sister-in-law, Lena Armfield of Hampton,
as well as several nieces and nephews
and other relatives and friends.
Besides his first wife Tina, he was also
preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers, Donald and Raymond Armfield.

1037 19th St. S.W. died Monday (May 31,
2005) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

George Oldag
SHEFFIELD — George Oldag, 74, of Mason
City and formerly of Sheffield, died
Friday (May 27, 2005) at Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. Thursday at Zion Reformed Church,
rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur
Zewert officiating. Interment will be at
Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield, with full
military honors.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.
today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in
Sheffield.
George Henry Oldag was born Dec. 24,
1930, in Postville, Iowa, a son of
Harold A. and Christine (Froning) Oldag.
He was baptized in the Lutheran Church.
At a young age, his family moved to
Sheffield, where he attended school.
George entered the U.S. Navy and served
for 30 years as a diesel mechanic.
On Oct. 18, 1952, George was united in
marriage with Alberta (Berdie) Koenen in
Hampton. After he retired from the Navy,
they moved back to Sheffield.
Berdie died Nov. 23, 2003. George moved
to an apartment in Mason City shortly
after that.
George was devoted to his family; with
his wife, he attended Zion Reformed
Church in rural Sheffield. Together they
enjoyed visiting casinos. He was active
in the Sheffield Lions Club and the
American Legion. Spare time was spent
fishing and hunting, which he thoroughly
enjoyed.
George is survived by his two daughters:
Deborah Kay (Richard) Millard, of Mason
City, and Jackie Dee (Lee) Cutler, of
Greene; six grandchildren: Kimberly,
Tony and Bethany Millard; Amber (Rob)
Cameron, and Ben and Brandon Cutler;
three great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Maya
and Nora, and one on the way; one
brother: Dean (Ardella) Oldag, of
Rockwell; two sisters: Lindy Miller, of
Sheffield and Mariellen (Bill)
Vanblaricom, of Florence, Ariz.
George is preceded in death by his
parents, his wife of 51 years, Berdie,
and brother-in-law, Roy Miller.

Jerry D. Porter
CLEAR LAKE — Jerry D. Porter, 68, of
Clear Lake, died Monday (May 30, 2005)
at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mason City.
Graveside services will be held at 2
p.m. today at the Dumont Cemetery. There
is no visitation.
Jerry Dean Porter was born Feb. 6, 1937,
in Rockwell, Iowa, a son of Francis
Preston and Olga Winifred (Wadsworth)
Porter. He attended school in Aredale.
At a young age, his father was killed in
a farming accident and, with his
brothers, Jerry went to live with his
grandparents, George and Myrtle Porter.
Prior to retirement, Jerry worked for
Winnebago Industries and has lived in
Clear Lake for the past five years.
Jerry is survived by two sisters:
Marilee Taylor, of Boone and Edna Mae
Brown, of Mason City, as well as many
nieces and nephews.
Jerry is preceded in death by his
parents and grandparents; two brothers,
James and Francis (Hank); and two
sisters, Leona Porter and Beverly
Whipple.

Benjamin T. Rutherford
FOREST CITY — Benjamin T. Rutherford,
91, of Forest City, died Tuesday (May
31, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-West
Campus in Mason City.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30
a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in
Forest City with the Rev. Larry Kidwell
and the Rev. Terry Port officiating.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the
Oakland Cemetery in Sac City.
Visitation will be an hour prior to the
service Friday at the church.

Benjamin T. Rutherford was born on June
22, 1913, in Ross, Iowa, the son of
James and Gerda (Wahlin) Rutherford. He
received his early education in Gray,
Iowa, and graduated from high school in
Manilla, Iowa. Ben received his B.A.
degree at Morningside College in Sioux
City, Iowa, and his M.A. degree at the
University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Ben married Lucille McVey in Fairfield,
Iowa, and to this union a daughter,
Jane, was born. Lucille passed away in
1969.
He began teaching at a rural school in
Crawford County, Iowa, and later in what
is presently the Audubon Community
School District. World War II
interrupted his teaching career and Ben
served four years in the U.S. Navy.
Following his honorable discharge, he
began teaching mathematics and social
studies in the seventh grade in Sac
City, Iowa. In 1952, he accepted the
position of principal at Sac Community
School.
On Oct. 22, 1970, Ben married Gretchen
Nelson. The couple made their home in
Sac City until Ben's retirement in 1974.
A very involved and dedicated
professional, Ben has served as
president of the Northwest Iowa Teachers
Association and as a member of the Board
of Directors of ISEA. He worked closely
with the North Central Association, the
Iowa Association of Secondary School
Principals and the National Association
of Secondary School Principals.
After retiring, Ben and Gretchen enjoyed
spending their winters in California and
summers in Forest City. Ben enjoyed
playing golf, even until his 90th year.
Other hobbies included watching
televised sporting events, working on
various craft projects and baking,
especially making cookies, which earned
him the name, "Cookie Man." Ben attended
First Baptist Church in Forest City and
was a member of Palm Desert Presbyterian
Church in Palm Springs, Calif.
Ben is survived by his wife, Gretchen
Rutherford, of Forest City, and his
children: Jane Ramsberger and husband,
Tom, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Rebecca
Kurtze and husband Larry of St. George,
Utah, and John Nelson and wife Susan of
Charlottesville, Va. Also surviving are
five grandchildren: Margaret Ramsberger,
Jennifer Nelson, Clifford Frederickson,
Sean Frederickson and Craig
Frederickson; a sister, Margarete
Reinholdt, residing in California, and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers, Ray, Glen and James,
and a sister, Helen.

HAMPTON — Melvin Lubkeman, 78, of

Donald D. Folkers
SUMMERTON, S.C. — Donald Dean Folkers,
75, husband of Harriette Medlin Folkers,
died Friday (May 27, 2005) in Tuomey
Hospital in Sumter.
Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Allison, Iowa, he
was a son of the late Herbert and Sylva
Bird Folkers. He was first married to
the late Ruth Branch Folkers.
He was a retired deputy base civil
engineer for Shaw Air Force Base, an Air
Force veteran and pilot, achieving the
rank of captain and an Air Force Reserve
major.
He was a graduate of Iowa State
University and the University of New
Mexico with a bachelor of science degree
in civil engineering.
Mr. Folkers was a member of Summerton
Presbyterian Church and a Shriner with
Hillcrest Lodge.
Surviving are his wife of Summerton,
S.C.; a son, Phillip (Becky) Folkers of
Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Lisa F.
(Rodney) Kee of Sumter, S.C.; two
stepdaughters, Tonya Bradley (Ronald)
Alexander and Vicki Bradley (Jeffrey)
Preast both of Sumter, S.C.; a brother,
Calvin Folkers of Oklahoma City, Okla.;
seven grandchildren, Erin, Alex,
William, Hannah, Dustin, Bryanna and
Megan.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
May 30, 2005 at Summerton Presbyterian
Church with the Revs. Garland Hart and
Richard Hudson officiating. Burial was
in Sumter Cemetery with full military
honors.
