AMES — Elaine Arlene Zuehlke, 80, of
Ames, died Sunday (June 19, 2005) at The
Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone.
A gathering of family and friends will
be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the
Gallilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake,
with Julie Zuehlke officiating.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mason
City Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason
City.
Elaine was born on Nov. 5, 1924, in
Mason City to Henry and Hilda Wearda.
She was united in marriage to Erwin
Zuehlke on Feb. 7, 1943, in Mason City.
Her hobbies included family and friends,
fishing in Canada and playing bridge.
She was an Avon sales representative for
12 years and also co-owner of Lake
Realty in Clear Lake.
She moved to Ames in November of 2001
from Clear Lake.
She is survived by two daughters, Pam
(John) Maurer, of Ames and Jan (Paul)
Lande, of Huxley; one son, Terry (Julie)
Zuehlke, of Golden Valley, Minn.; eight
grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband
in December of 2001; one son; one
daughter; one son-in-law; and one
granddaughter.

HAMPTON — Harold E. Menning, 79, of
Hampton, died Monday (June 20, 2005) at
Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Wednesday at the Hampton United
Methodist Church in Hampton, with the
Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial
will be at later date in the Hampton
Cemetery in Hampton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.
today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home
in Hampton.
Harold E. Menning was born on Nov. 10,
1925, in Hampton, son of John F. and
Carla (Stayner) Menning.
He graduated from Hampton High School
and attended the Iowa State University
in Ames.
He served his country during World War
II and later retired from the U.S. Army
Reserves.
He was united in marriage to Donna
Boyenga on July 29, 1952, in Hampton.
He retired as a mail carrier and he
hobby-farmed during his retirement.
He was a member of the Hampton United
Methodist Church in Hampton.
He was a certified high school umpire,
and enjoyed coaching and umpiring
baseball games. Harold also enjoyed
farming, bowling, watching Iowa State
wrestling, and attending his
grandchildren's events.
He is survived by his wife, Donna
Menning, of Hampton; Hampton; son, Kreg
and wife Angela Menning, of Hampton, and
children, Ryan, Drew, and Brenna; and
son, Kevin Menning, of Claremore, Okla.;
and children, Melissa and Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by parents, one
brother and one sister.

BELMOND — Leo W. Barkema, 83, of
Belmond, died Saturday (June 18, 2005)
at the Belmond Care Center. A graveside
memorial service will be held at a later
date in the Amsterdam Cemetery in
Goodell.
Leo was born on June 27, 1921, the son
of Hauko Barkema and Grace (Lieuwen)
Barkema in rural Goodell. He attended
school in Goodell and served his country
in the United States Army achieving the
rank of corporal.
Leo was united in marriage to Noreen
McMahon on Nov. 21, 1942 in Belmond.
They moved to Mason City in 1961. Leo
worked for the Iowa Department of
Transportation for 36 years in the
maintenance department. He traveled
extensively and made many trips to
Northern Minnesota to fish. He also
enjoyed golfing, and even got a
hole-in-one.
Leo is survived by his wife, Noreen
Barkema, of Belmond; brothers, Harvey
Barkema and wife, Irene, of Forest City,
and Mervin Barkema and wife, Irene, of
Klemme; sisters, Marvel Statdlander, of
Sheffield and Jean Ostendorf of Klemme.
Leo is also survived by several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
and brothers, Theodore and Leland.

Norman P. ‘Bud'
Leinenkugel
NEW HAVEN — Norman P.
"Bud" Leinenkugel, 90,
of New Haven, Iowa, was
called home to the Lord
on Monday (June 20,
2005) at Mercy Medical
Center in Des Moines,
Iowa, surrounded by his
loved ones.
Bud was born Aug. 11,
1914, in Sauk City,
Wis., the son of Paul
and Amelia "Molly"
(Jahnel) Leinenkugel. He
was raised in Sauk City,
and after high school
attended the University
of Wisconsin. He joined
the U.S. Army during
World War II in officer
training, and served as
a lieutenant, using his
fluent German in work
with the German POWs.
After the war, he worked
briefly in Chicago,
where he became an avid
Chicago White Sox fan.
Bud moved to New Haven
in 1945, and purchased
New Haven Hardware from
Leo Lockwood. He met
Mary Jane Fox on a blind
date, and they were
married on Nov. 25,
1948, at St. Peter's
Catholic Church in New
Haven.
Bud and Mary Jane ran
the New Haven Hardware
for more than 50 years
until Bud's retirement
at age 84. They raised
eight children in New
Haven, and had 55 years
together as members of
St. Peter's Parish
before Mary Jane's death
in 2004, after which Bud
moved to the Des Moines
area. He enjoyed
fishing, hunting,
playing cards and
watching sporting
events.
Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at 10:30
a.m. Friday at St.
Peter's Catholic Church
in New Haven with the

Concrete Co. in Des
Moines in 1962, and
worked there until 1973
when he began working as
a counter salesman for
Standard Bearing Co. in
Des Moines. He was
transferred to Mason
City in 1979, and worked
for Standard Bearing
until 1984. Gilbert also
worked for Precision
Industry in Mason City,
as a counter salesman
and operations manager
until his retirement in
2003.
He was united in
marriage to Laurie
Whitehurst on June 5,
1982, in Ventura, Iowa.
Gilbert enjoyed fishing,
photography, woodworking
and grilling, but his
great love and enjoyment
were his family and
grandchildren.
He was a Baptist by
faith, and was a Cub
Scout Master for Pack
420 in Plymouth.

Jim was drafted into the

Bros., and the Klipto
Corp.
Jim enjoyed collecting
golf balls, working with
the youth hockey
association and working
on craft projects.
He was a member of the
Sertoma Club, Mason City
Youth Hockey
Association, Jaycees,
and the Architectural
Board of The Wells, in
Mesa, Ariz. He was also
a longtime member the
First Presbyterian
Church.
Jim is survived by his

Dewie Harriet Schultz
Gibbs, the daughter of
Halvor and Josephine
(Beckjordan) Halvorson,
was born Nov. 13, 1918
at Leland. She was
baptized and confirmed
at Winnebago Lutheran
Church northeast of
Leland. Dewie attended
the rural schools near
Leland. When she was six
years old, her father
died and she and her
siblings helped her
mother on the farm.
On Jan. 7, 1939, she was
married to Joe Virgil
Schultz at the Methodist
parsonage in Klemme.
They lived in Forest
City until 1948, when
they moved to Garner
where she did some
babysitting and worked
at several cafes in
town. She also worked
for the Garner-Hayfield
school district in the
lunch program and later
at Concord Care Center
until she retired at the
age of 67. On Dec.
31,1990, her husband,
Joe, passed away.
On April 9, 1994, she
was married to Asa Gibbs
at the United Methodist
Church in Garner. In
August 2004, they moved
to Cardinal Grove
Assisted Living in
Garner. The past few
months Dewie had resided
at the Concord Care
Center.
She enjoyed her family,
gardening, playing
cards, working puzzles,
reading, fishing, and
going to garage sales.
She was a member of the
United Methodist Church
and UMW-Ruth Circle.

She enjoyed singing,
puzzles and crocheting
afghans for her family.
Alberta's pride and joy
was her family and she
loved to help care for
her grandchildren. She
was also known as the
"cookie lady" in
Belmond.

Marcele was born Dec. 5,
1923, in rural Hancock
County, the daughter of

Back. She graduated from
Goodell High School in
1940 and Hamilton
Business College in
1941.
Marcele was united in
marriage to Francis
Dahlstrom on Oct. 11,
1942, in Mason City; to
this union two children
were born. Marcele and
Francis shared 51 years
of marriage and 54
birthdays together
because they both shared
December 5th birthdays.
Marcele worked at her
hometown bank of Goodell
State Savings Bank while
Francis served in World
War II. She retired from
the Globe Gazette
accounting department on
May 1,1987.
Marcele was an avid
Hallmark ornament
collector and lover of
the many cats who owned
her, but her greatest
pride was her family and
her biggest joy was her
grandson, Sean.
She is survived by her
children, Jeffrey
Dahlstrom, of Mason
City, and Celane and her
husband, Mark Vasey, of
West Des Moines; and her
grandson, Sean Vasey, of
West Des Moines.
She is preceded in death
by her mother in 1952,

Robert was born on Sept.
28, 1906, to Andrew S.

Helgeland on the family
farm west of Northwood.
Bob attended country
grade school and
graduated from Northwood
High School in 1927.
After graduation, he was
employed in several
paving and construction
jobs. He attended
various trade schools
studying aircraft and
auto mechanics. Bob was
employed as an auto
mechanic at the Ford
Garage in Northwood
until World War II.
Bob entered the U.S.
Army Air Corps, where he
was trained as an
aircraft instrument
technician, attaining
the rank of tech
sargent. Later in the
war, he was stationed on
Saipan, where he was
responsible for
maintaining and
calibrating the Norden
bombsights installed in
the B-29 bombers which
bombed Japan.
Following his honorable
discharge from the
service, he returned to
the Ford Garage in
Northwood. Bob then
enrolled in watchmaker
school after which he
joined L.T. Dillon
Watchmaking Jewelry
business in Northwood.
Upon L.T. Dillon's
retirement, Bob
continued the business
in Northwood until his
own retirement. Included
with this business was
the calibration and
maintenance of the big
clock on Main Street,
which was brought to
Northwood by L.T.
Dillon. It should be
noted that Bob got up to
change the clock's time
at precisely the
specified daylight
saving time of 2 a.m.
Bob was a lifetime
member of First Lutheran
Church and served on the
Church Council for six
years. He was also the
bell ringer until halted
by physical limitations.
Bob enjoyed driving
country roads in Worth
and adjoining counties
daily, noting points and
activities of interest,
such as new
construction, country
churches and farming. He
also enjoyed fixing and
repairing small problems
in and about his home.
Bob was preceded in
death by his parents;
two brothers: Sander and
wife, Annette, and
Elmer; two sisters:
Rossela and Viola
Torgerson and husband,
Alfred; and
brother-in-law, Cy
Bogue.
He is survived by a
sister, Gladys Bogue of
Manly; and

Tammy was born on Dec.
18, 1963, the youngest
of six children, to
Kenneth Heller and Lois
(Jennings) Thomas in
Osage, Iowa. She
attended grade school at
Lincoln Elementary in
Osage.
In 1973, she moved to
Des Moines, Iowa, with
her mother, Lois, and
step-father, Charles
Thomas. She continued
her schooling at Lincoln
High School in Des
Moines
She was married to Kirk
Welch of Des Moines and
was blessed with a
special daughter,
Courtney Welch and an
awesome son, Charles
Welch. She was so proud
of the accomplishments
of her children and told
everyone about them.
She worked in the Britt
area for Armour and
Con-Agra and later moved
to the Nebraska area.
She held various jobs in
her lifetime and loved
working with people
wherever she went.
Tammy never knew a
stranger; she was a
friend to all that she
met and had such a big
heart. She would do
anything for anyone even
without being asked.
Some of her most special
times were spent with
her family at the
holidays, especially the
Christmases together.
She was known for her
cooking, her love of
animals, riding
motorcycles, singing and
kids. She had many
children that called her
Mom and Aunt Tammy, for
which she had so much
joy sharing in their
lives. She will be
missed by all the
friends she has made
over her lifetime, but
especially by her
children and family.
She is survived by her
children: Courtney
Welch, Clear Lake, and
Charles (Chuck) Welch,
Crystal Lake; her
mother, Lois Thomas,
Crystal Lake, one
brother, Ken (Rebecca)

Decorah. He served in
Company F, 110th
Infantry during the
Korean War. Upon his
return he began his
career with Northwestern
Bell, retiring from
there in 1986.
He married Betty
Stinehart on Oct. 4,
1953, in Mason City. To
that union, five
children were added.
Robert was a charter
member of the Shepherd
of the Valley Lutheran
Church in West Des
Moines, where he was an
active member.
He is survived by his
wife, Betty; sister,
Helen Thoen and her
husband, David, of
Manly; his daughter,
Rebecca Blackburn and
her husband, Harry, of
Clive; four sons, Paul

Moines, Richard Schulte

Marjorie Evans
MASON CITY — Marjorie
Evans of Tucson, Ariz.,
formerly of Mason City,
passed away on May 31,
2005.
Born Marjorie Jane
Howard, of Ames, her
parents were Mary
Elizabeth (Kintzley) and
Alva Lybarger Howard.
She was raised in Ames
and Sioux City, Iowa. In
1936, she graduated from
Sioux City Central High
School, where she was
valedictorian of her
class, editor of the
yearbook, and active in
many clubs. In 1940, she
graduated from Iowa
State University, where
she studied dietetics,
and was a member of Pi
Beta Phi.
In March of that year,
she married her great
love, John William Evans
of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and
went on to proudly spend
the next 58 years as
John's best friend,
helpmate, dancing
partner, traveling
companion, and mother of
his children. Until the
end of his life in 1998,
John's greatest
happiness was to come
home from work to be
with Marjorie.
Between 1940 and 1958,
Marjorie and John lived
in Webster City, Iowa,
where their four
daughters were born. In
1958, the family move to
Mason City, Iowa, where
Marjorie continued to
live until 2001. The
family spent their
summers in Clear Lake,
Iowa, from 1950 until
the mid-1980's. In their
later years, John and
Marjorie enjoyed
spending a part of the
winter at their home in
Tucson, Ariz.
Marjorie was active in
many of Mason City's
clubs and philanthropic
organizations, including
the Red Cross, Mason
City Public Library,
Crippled Children's, the
MacNider Art Museum, the
YWCA, PEO, and the Mason
City Women's Club. She
met women of like
interests and dedication
through these groups and
leaves behind many, many
wonderful friends. In
her last years, she took
great pleasure in the
wildlife outside of her
Arizona home.
Marjorie is survived by
four daughters: Mary
Provost (Alain) of
Tucson, Nancy Evans of
Tucson, Katherine Evans
of San Antonio, Texas,
and Elizabeth Evans
(Steve Reitz) of Tucson.
Marjorie is also
survived by five
grandchildren: Jesse
Evans-Schroeder of
Tucson, Tony Aguasvivas
of San Antonio, Texas,
Ashley O'dell, Max
Provost of Tucson, and
Nora Evans-Reitz of
Tucson. Her daughters,
grandchildren, and
sons-in-law were very
grateful to have
Marjorie in Tucson
during her last years.
They will miss
Marjorie's presence in
their lives and carry
her memory forward with
them forever.

1905, in Boone, Iowa,
the daughter of Herman

Scherping. She graduated
from Mason City High
School in 1923. Pearl
married William R.
"Jack" Fisher on June
21, 1928 in Boone. Pearl
worked as a registered
nurse, graduating in
1926 from St. Joseph
Mercy School of Nursing.
She worked as an RN in
Mason City for 50 years.
She was the city nurse
of Mason City, worked at
Park Hospital and at age
61 attend-ed the
University of Iowa to
further her education to
assist in opening the
cardiac care unit at
Park Hospital. She also
worked for Dr. Sartor as
his office nurse.
Pearl was the oldest
living graduate of the
St. Joseph Mercy School
of Nursing. She attended
the annual reunions well
into her 90s. Pearl was
a member for many years
of the 10th District
Nurses Association and a
former long time member
of the Queen Rebekah
Lodge.
The center of Pearl's
life was her family,
particularly her
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Pearl enjoyed traveling
to many places in the
world, spending time at
her cottage in Clear
Lake and the years of
doing many different
things with her two
sisters.
Crocheting and knitting
were other leisure
activities she enjoyed.
Pearl was a member of
Grace United Methodist
Church and had attended
church there most of her
life.
Pearl is survived by a
son, Jack Fisher and
wife, Mary Jo, of Mason
City; grandchildren,
William Fisher and wife,
Ann, of Mason City,
Kathy Alscher and
husband, Phillip, of
Mason City, and Robert
Fisher of Mason City;
great-grandchildren,

Lillian's love for her
family was huge; her
life centered around her
family.
She enjoyed baking,
bowling, crafts, baking
bread, playing cards and
bingo. She and her
husband wintered in
Texas for 28 years.
Lillian was a Girl Scout
leader, a member of the
Rebecca Lodge, and a
member of the Methodist
Church in Britt.
Survivors include her
