DON T. MCCOURT


MASON CITY — Don T. McCourt, 82, of 23251 Thrush Ave., died Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with Pastor Thomas Healey officiating.

Following the service the family asks that you please join them at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, Iowa, to share memories and have refreshments.

Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Plymouth Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

Family suggests memorials to the Don T. McCourt Memorial Fund.

Don was born Sept. 6, 1922, the son of Francis F. and Anna (Lehman) McCourt. He graduated from Plymouth High School.

Following high school he worked for an airplane factory in San Diego, Calif.

He married Mary Woodhouse in San Diego, Calif., in 1942.

He served in the United States Army from June 1944-1945.

After the service he attended Des Moines Tech School for carpentry.

He lived in the Plymouth and Northwood area and while living in the Northwood area he was a weekend farmer raising hogs and cows.

He worked for Davey & Moen Construction Co. in Mason City until he retired in 1982.

After he retired, he drove school bus for North Central of Manly School District for 14 years and really enjoyed driving for the extra curricular activities and doing carpenter work.

Don married Ramona “Mona” Buffington McCourt Jan. 1, 1982, in Northwood, Iowa.

He really enjoyed helping his kids with their projects, watching his wood pile grow in the fall and the warmth of a wood fire all winter, fishing and camping.

He was a member of Carpenter Union Local 1313 for more than 40 years and was a member of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Deptartment.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Ramona “Mona” McCourt, of Mason City; three children, Judith Davies and her husband, Wally, of Manly, Don McCourt Jr. and his wife, Doris, of Shellsburg, Iowa and Roxanne Jackson and her husband, Jake, of Hanlontown; his former wife, Mary McCourt, of Manly; three step-children, Kathy MacPhail and her husband, Tom, of Anchorage, Alaska, Dan McCourt and his wife Nancy, of Manly, Iowa and Patty Reuter and her husband Gary, Manly, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother Tom McCourt and his special friend, Margaret Jackson, of Mason City; sister, Betty Miles, of Hardy, Ark.; his special friends and neighbors, Jiggs Rice,Roger Hedegard and Paul and Sally Degen, of Plymouth, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Keith and Dean McCourt; and one granddaughter, Rachael Reuter.

WEBSTER CITY — Marilyn J. Olson, 71, of 1224 Second St., Webster City, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at the Southfield Wellness Community Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves, Director of Spiritual Care Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Marilyn J. Olson Memorial Fund.

Marilyn was born July 27, 1933, in Mason City, the daughter of Clifford and Anna (Christiansen) Baumgartner. She graduated from Mason City High School.

Marilyn married James W. Olson on May 1, 1954, in Mason City. They moved to Wesley, Iowa, in 1954 then to Webster City in 1995.

Marilyn worked in telephone sales for directory service for 10 years.


She enjoyed collecting dolls and plates, sewing, and crocheting.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, James W. Olson, of Webster City; son, James D. Olson and wife, Vicki, of Webster City; daughter, Annette Askeland and husband, Bernard, of Wesley; son, Daryl Olson and wife Elizabeth of Norwalk; son, Daniel Olson and wife Teresa of Kanawha; sister, Anita Legler of Mason City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marilyn’s parents, sister, LaVaun Pinckney; and brother, Rollin Dean Baumgartner; preceded her in death.

CLEAR LAKE — Hattie D. Stevens, 97, a resident of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake and formerly of Swaledale, died Monday (Sept. 20, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa under the care of Hospice.

HAMPTON — Paul Andrew Hovenga Jr., 37, of Hampton, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at his home.

ROGER A. KUHN


CALMAR — Roger A. Kuhn, 51, of Calmar, died on Saturday (Sept. 18, 2004) at his home following a sudden illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar, Iowa with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Roger Anthony Kuhn was born on April 11, 1953, the son of Anthony W. and Colette A. (Elsbernd) Kuhn in Decorah, Iowa. Roger attended and graduated from South Winn High School in 1971.

He attended Area One in Calmar and graduated with a farm management degree in 1973.

Roger married Jeanie Barsaloux on Nov. 22, 1975, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa.

Roger farmed north of Calmar for many years and was currently a student at NICC in the nursing program and was expected to graduate in December as a registered nurse. Roger also did custom spraying for area farmers.

Roger was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where he was a former CCD instructor, the Winneshiek County Cattlemen’s Association, where he was past president; the Winneshiek County Extension Council, and was a former 4-H leader.

Roger enjoyed playing cards, socializing, helping people and doing volunteer work.

Roger’s survivors include his wife, Jeanie Kuhn, of Calmar; one daughter, Janelle Kuhn, of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Scott Kuhn, of Calmar, Kevin Kuhn and his wife Dedra, of West Union, and Robert “Bob” Kuhn and fiancée, Michelle Bohr, of Calmar; six grandchildren, Terrance, Anthony, Jason, Ryan, Kyle and Dylin; Roger’s parents, Anthony and Colette Kuhn, of Cresco; six sisters, Ruth Schluter and husband, Bob, of Waverly, Rosemary Courtney and husband, Greg, of Burlington, Germaine Kuhn, of Calmar, Martha Stussy and husband Robert, of Soldiers Grove, Wis., Kathy Young and husband Tom, of Manly, and Lois Olsen and husband, Ron, of Cottage Grove, Minn.; three brothers: Leo Kuhn and wife Mary, of Soldiers Grove, Wis., Mark Kuhn and wife, Ruth, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, and Albert Kuhn and wife, Karen, of Ridgeway, Iowa; and 22 nieces and nephews, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

ST. ANSGAR — Evelyn F. Dieterich, 83, of St. Ansgar died on Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Evelyn Frances Billings was born on Nov. 26, 1920, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, to Leslie and May (Denner) Billings. She lived in Fayette, Iowa until she was 3 years of age. Her family then moved to New Hampton. At age 6 she moved to Osage, Iowa.

Evelyn was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. O.C. Myhre at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, Iowa. She attended schools in Mitchell County and graduated from Osage High School in 1939.

Evelyn taught rural school in Cedar Township south of Osage for one year and then entered the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn., for one year.

Evelyn married Lawrence Dieterich in 1941 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Osage. They lived on a farm half a mile east of St. Ansgar for two years where she helped with 4-H.

They moved to a farm three and a half miles southwest of St. Ansgar in 1943 where she helped with farming and the raising of their children.

An important part of her life was providing support to her husband, Lawrence, in his many activities. In 1982 they moved to their present home in St. Ansgar.

Evelyn was active in the community, participating in Music Mothers where she was chairperson for two years, a member of the I.C. Federated Club in St. Ansgar for several years, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was chairperson of the Leaders Circle and a member of the Mary Circle.

Her hobbies included bridge, gardening and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, LaDonna Mae in infancy; brother, Covel Billings; and sister, Beverly Allison.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Lawrence, of St. Ansgar; daughters, Rita Kicherer and husband, David, of Newton, Kan., and Darla Stiles and husband William of West Des Moines; son, Dennis and his wife Ann of St. Ansgar; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Gast and her husband Birney of Osage.

BERNHARD E. VIERKANT


MASON CITY — Bernhard E. Vierkant, 74, of Mason City, died Saturday (Sept. 18, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Meservey Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Meester of First Reformed Church, of Meservey officiating. Veteran’s rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Meservey.

Bernhard Eugene Vierkant was born Dec. 25, 1929, in Franklin County, a son of Herman H. and Grace (Fekkers) Vierkant.

He was baptized and confirmed in the First Reformed Church in Meservey. He attended country school.

Bernhard was united in marriage with Lucille A. Schultz in Aberdeen, Md.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He returned to Meservey with his family and drove truck with Vierkant and Son Trucking.

Later he sold the business and drove truck for Doden Trucking and others.

For the last 22 years, Bernie drove bus for Mason City Transit.

He was a life member of the VFW in Mason City and a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge.

Bernie was quite a good mechanic and liked tinkering with cars and trucks. He liked reading Western books and gardening and traveling.

He is survived by his children, Linda Wessels, of Eau Claire, Wis., Robert and Meri (Kathy) Vierkant, of Belmond, and Carol Schoenwetter, of Garner; Vicki Taylor, of Ankeny; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Noreen (Ed) Schwierjohann, of Sheffield; special friends, Lorraine Brackey and Barb Laughlin, of Mason City.

Bernie is preceded in death by his parents and brother LaVerne Vierkant.

PANAGIOTA KARAMITROS


MASON CITY — Panagiota Karamitros, 95, of 302 Second St. N.E. died Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Panagiota was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Doliana, Tripolis, Greece, the daughter of Simeon and Efthimea Colettis Karagiannis.

She married Sotirios Karamitros in Greece, in 1930, and moved to Mason City, Iowa.

She and her husband were in partnership with the Karamitros brothers and operated a bakery and grocery store and later the Club Troika, a well-known steakhouse in Northern Iowa. Panagiota was the original chef at the Club Troika.

Papagiota was the first Greek immigrant woman to receive a driver’s license in Mason City. She became a citizen of the United States after the required five years and voted in every election.

She was extremely proud of her American citizenship. Panagiota loved the United States and every day was heard to say, “God bless America.”

Panagiota placed much emphasis on education and the education of her children. She herself started writing poetry following her husband’s death. Her book of poetry is in the process of being published.

Other interests included music, traveling, creative writing and cooking.

Panagiota was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church and a long-time member of the Philoptohos Society of the Orthodox Church.

She is survived by her three daughters, Angelica Bender of Murrieta, Calif., Efthimea Becker of Mason City, Vasiliki “Bess” Doerr and husband Joe of Murrieta, Calif.; grandchildren, Stephanie Hill of Murrieta, Calif., Karen Howell and husband Dr. Scott Howell of Murrieta, Calif., Dr. Christina Bender and husband Dr. Nikos Georgiades of New Providence, N.J., Dr. John Alexander Becker of Cambridge, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Christopher Howell of Murrieta, Calif., Kathryn Howell of Murrieta, Calif., Nicholas Hill of Murrieta, Calif., Alexis Georgiades of New Providence, N.J.

Panagiota’s parents, five brothers, Costa, Chris, George, Apostoli, and John; three sisters, Vasiliki, Sophia and Eleni preceded her in death.

SCOTT ANDERSEN


BOONE — Scott Andersen, 42, of Boone and formerly of Mason City, died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines on Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) from complications of heart surgery.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cornerstone Church of Ames (located at Highway 30 and Interstate 35) with Pastor Troy Nesbitt officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Church. Following the visitation, his body will be cremated.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to establish college funds for his children.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel at 6th & Marshall Streets in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.

DAVID EINAR NEIL OPPEDAL


MASON CITY — David Einar Neil Oppedal, 53, formerly of Kiester, Minn., died on Monday (Sept. 20, 2004) at North Iowa Hospice after being hospitalized at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, due to complications of a massive stroke.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester, Minn., with Pastor Chris Fiske officiating. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kiester, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Bricelyn and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

David was born on May 3, 1951, in Wells, Minn., the son of Einar and Violet Oppedal. He attended school in Thompson, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester where he was baptized and confirmed.

David worked many years at the Bricelyn Canning Factory and most recently in the wood shop at NIVC in Mason City.

He enjoyed bowling, shopping and traveling. He traveled to many parts of the United States with his latest trip to Alaska last year.

He resided at Lakeland Apartments in Clear Lake, Iowa, where he was highly thought of by both the staff and other residents.

He is survived by his parents: Einar and Violet Oppedal of Lake Mills; one brother, Gary and his wife Jodi Oppedal of Wells, Minn.; one sister, Lynn Michelle of Forest City; one aunt, Vivian Oppedal, Decatur, Ill.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, David and Alma Olson and Isaac and Bertha Oppedal; one brother, Ivan Oppedal; an uncle, Donald Oppedal; and aunt and uncle Ernie and Margaret Hill.

GARNER — Marie M. Vogel, 76, of Garner died Monday (Sept. 20, 2004) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner with a Rosary Society rosary at 5 p.m. and a Scriptural remembrance service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Marie Matilda Vogel, the daughter of Charles A. and Coletta (Sondag) Webb, was born July 16, 1928, at Sigourney. She attended Plank Township No. 9 Country School near Sigourney and helped her family on the farm.

On Jan. 21, 1948, she was married to Joseph Richard Vogel at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. They lived in Sigourney until moving to Garner in 1958.

Marie was employed as school cook in Garner for 32 years retiring in 1992.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, cooking, sewing and gardening.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

Marie is survived by her husband, Joseph, of Garner; three children, James (Kathy) Vogel of League, Texas, John (Lee Ann) Vogel of League, Texas and Bonnie (Robert) Butin of Garner; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane (Tony) Weber of Washington, and Helen (Dale) Barnhart of Sigourney; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Teresa and Mary; her parents; and two brothers, Paul and Francis Webb.

DALE LEE ABBAS


DES MOINES — Dale Lee Abbas, 67, died on Saturday (Sept. 18, 2004) at home the result of pancreatic cancer.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Brooks Funeral Care/University Chapel, 7975 University Blvd. in Clive, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Care (University Chapel) with the family present from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Dale’s family.

Dale was born Sept. 5, 1937, to John Engle and Pauline Marie (DeVries) Abbas in Hampton, Iowa. He grew up in Latimer, graduating from Franklin Consolidated High School (now known as CAL Community).

He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Oklahoma, North Carolina and Okinawa. Following his discharge, he moved to Des Moines where he worked in the computer service field until his health declined.

Dale was united in marriage to Martha Lorraine Brodrick in Des Moines, Iowa, on Oct. 20, 1957. To that union were born three children: Julie Beth, Michael Dale, and Jeffrey Alan.

Dale was a lay leader and lay minister in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School.

He was a volunteer for the Cancer Society of Iowa, the National Kidney Foundation and Polk County Child Care Resource Center.

He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous with more than 31 years of sobriety. He served A.A. in various service positions at the local, district, state and world service levels.

He loved traveling, fishing, reading, watching NASCAR, and caring for his cats.

Dale was known for his kind, gentle and loving spirit. He often said, “I always liked that guy! (or gal)” That’s also how most people viewed him.

Surviving are his wife, Martha; a daughter, Julie Long (Daniel), of Des Moines; two sons, Michael Abbas (Michelle), of Memphis, Tenn., and Jeffrey Abbas (Haruhi) of Iowa City; six granddaughters, Ilana Lorraine Dennis, of Barstow, Calif., Jessie Lee Dennis, of Des Moines, Alyssa Michelle and Elise Marie Abbas, of Memphis, Tenn., Hayley Haruhi and Akane Olivia Abbas, of Iowa City; and a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Iris Wood, of Barstow, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward; a sister, Ruth Yakel; and a granddaughter, Kecia Marie Abbas.

MASON CITY — Ruth R. “Blondie” Trytten, 75, of 1449 N. Carolina Place, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Burial will be at 3:15 p.m. Friday in Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills.

CLEAR LAKE — Hattie D. Stevens, 97, a resident of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake and formerly of Swaledale, died Monday (Sept. 20, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa under the care of Hospice.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, in Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to Hattie’s service today at the funeral home.

Hattie Dorothy Stevens was born Sept. 10, 1907, on a farm southeast of Hanford, Iowa, to William and Dora (Stoltenberg) Everhart. She was one of 11 children born to her parents. Her family later moved to a farm near Burchinal, where Hattie attended Bath School, a country school near Burchinal.

She spoke only German until she learned the English language in school.

Hattie was united in marriage to Lloyd V. Stevens in December 1925 in Mason City. The couple lived in Swaledale and became the proud parents of four daughters.

Hattie was an immaculate homemaker and tending to her husband and daughters was her greatest priority.

She sewed clothing for her daughters, tended to their religious training, canned much of the garden produce and had compassion for small pets and animals.

She and Lloyd enjoyed time together while socializing at the local restaurant.

Hattie attained her first driver’s license during her middle-age years and delighted in driving her show-room quality ’54 Chevy.

Some of Hatties’ leisure activities and interests included embroidery, watching Lawrence Welk, avidly cheering for the Minnesota Twins and thoroughly reading the newspapers, especially the Globe Gazette.

Hattie is described by her daughters as a woman who treasured simplicity, was a strict disciplinarian, always concerned for her daughters and their families, sometimes stubborn and content in day-to-day life. She was an interested and nurturing grandmother.

In September 1977, Hattie left Swaledale and moved to the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Even when her family would come to spend time with her away from Oakwood, she was always anxious and happy to return to her familiar surroundings, where she greatly felt at home for the past 27 years.

Hattie will be missed dearly by family and friends who have shared her life.

She is survived by her four daughters, Dorothy Walrod of Belmond, Donna (Bill) Hopley of Klemme, Doris (Fred) Flores of Mason City, and Deloras (Merle) Frohling of Meservey.

She will also be sadly missed by her sister, Evelyn Sandy of San Marcos, Calif.; her five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Hattie in death are her husband, Lloyd Stevens, in April 1974; her parents; her son-in-law, Babe Walrod; her six brothers and three sisters.

Ruth Rosella Trytten was born April 14, 1929, on a farm near Elmore, Minn., a daughter of Andrew and Christine (Didor) Loge. She was united in marriage to Elmer Theodore “Bud” Trytten on Oct. 12, 1945 at Minneapolis, Minn.

Ruth attended Albert Lea, Minn., schools. She worked at Jacob E. Decker & Sons/Armour for 34 years, where she was active in the AFL-CIO, holding office and had a lead role in the United Way fund drive each year.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, crafts and a good card game. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for having a knack for making people laugh.

She was a 50-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a member of Women of the Moose in Mason City.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Lajeunesse and her husband Richard, of Fruit Heights, Utah, and Kristi Trytten, of Bountiful, Utah; a son, Daryl Trytten, of Mason City; and a special friend of the family, Penny Trytten, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Brenda Kobernusz, of Monrovia, Calif.; Kate Haberl, of Santa Clara, Utah; Julie Kobernusz, of Pasadena, Calif.; James Kobernusz, of Fruit Heights; Angie Trytten, of Mason City; and Trenity Trytten, of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Dalton and Decker Haberl, of Santa Clara; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was recently preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, a month ago on Aug. 22, 2004. Her parents, two sisters, Hazel Sickles and Inez Jensen; four brothers, Herman, Lloyd, Alfred and Arthur Loge, also preceded her in death.

Those serving as pallbearers will be Daryl Trytten, James Kobernusz, Jim Loge, Dennis Largent, Raleigh King; Marlyn Loge and Jim Hrubetz. Honorary pallbearers will be Occi Smallfoot, Marge Jerrell, Dee Baragan, Josephine Angell, and Kathryn Espinosa.

Eric Bryant Santee was born Aug. 25, 1969, at Charles City, the son of Max and Frances (Overturf) Santee.

He graduated from Nashua High School in 1987, where he was an active weight-lifter and played football.

Eric graduated from NIACC in 1989 with an electronic technician degree.

On April 29, 1989, Eric was united in marriage to Terri Jacobson at United Methodist Church in Nashua. They renewed their vows for their 15th anniversary on May 1, 2004, in Clear Lake.

Eric worked for Farmland Industries for more than 13 years and most recently for Enterprise Products.

He enjoyed riding his Harley, spending time with his wife, Terri, and their dog, Bear. Eric also was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Living family members include his wife, Terri, of Mankato, Minn.; his dog, Bear; parents, Max and Frances Santee of Nashua; two brothers, Scott (Nona) Santee of Old Hickory, Tenn., and Monte (Lisa) Santee of Albert Lea, Minn.; a sister, Angela (John) Marvin of Charles City; his father-in-law, Edward Jacobson, of Charles City; a sister-in-law, Jody Jacobson of Charles City; two brothers-in-law, Kevin Jacobson and Randy (Andrea) Jacobson both of Mason City; a niece; nephews and cousins.

EL CAJON, Calif. — Bruce Edwin Snow, 68, died Thursday (Sept. 16, 2004) at Kaiser Hospital in San Diego, Calif. Bruce had been battling with leukemia, diabetes and heart disease.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Ave., San Diego, Calif.

Bruce was born June 8, 1936, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of Jean and Fern (Wilkinson) Snow. At age 9, he moved with his family to Clear Lake, was raised there and went to school at Baker’s Country School, Lake No. 4, then Clear Lake High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1956, serving a full military service until retiring in 1976. Bruce served out of the West-Pac, having home base at San Diego.

Following his service retirement, he worked for the Avecado Elementary School in El Cajon for 14 years, enjoying all the elementary kids in that area.

Surviving Bruce is his wife, Muriel (Flarirty); daughter, Michelle and Russell Alexander, Sr., of Santee; son, Bruce E. Jr. and Juliana (Bank) Snow of El Cajon; four grandchildren, Danny King Jr., Bruce Snow III, Jean Snow, and Jessica Snow, as well as stepgrandchildren, Melanie (Alexander) Hiser and Russell Alexander Jr.; one great-granddaughter; one step great-granddaughter and one stepgrandson; his mother, Fern Snow Zinser, of Clear Lake; brothers, David and Judith (Dodd) of Anchorage, Alaska; Larry of Clear Lake; Harlan and Gayle (Hakes) of Clear Lake besides many nieces and nephews.

His father, Jean E. Snow, and two granddaughters, Mandy M. King and Melissa M. King, preceded him in death.

George Robert Shultz was born, Oct. 29, 1920, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a son of Clinton Ross and Myrtle Mynelia (Elfers) Shultz, and died Thursday (Sept. 23, 2004) at his farm in Greene.

He received his education in the rural schools and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1937.

As a young man he was engaged in farming in Floyd County.

On July 27, 1944, he was inducted into the United States Army, where he served with Co. F 120th Regt. 30th Div. in Central Europe.

On March 2, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Louise Azerski, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Following his discharged on Feb. 22, 1946, he returned to farming. George and Margaret were blessed with four children.

George’s life and greatest love was farming. For more than 58 years he farmed in the Greene and Marble Rock areas. He was once asked what he was going to do when he retired. His reply was to farm.

He was well-versed in the various farming techniques, market prices, and types of farming equipment. George enjoyed going to the farm sales and enjoyed trading machinery.

He served on the farmers cooperative board and the Floyd County Pork Producers Board.

He was a quiet and humble man. He enjoyed going to town for coffee, going for a walk around town, and visiting the public library.

George was baptized on June 5, 1949, at the First Methodist Church in Marble Rock. He had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where he had served as trustee and elder of the church.

Those thankful for his life include his loving wife, Margaret, of Greene; and his children, Roger (Joan) Shultz of Encino, Calif., Robert (Laurel) Shultz of Greene, Jean (David) Thorson of Charles City, and Carol Lee (Dan) Schroeder of Greene; 15 grandchildren, Lance (Amy) Shultz, Rayan (Jennifer) Shultz, Travis (friend, Mandy Mashburn) Shultz, Garrett Shultz, Chad (Janice) Shultz, Chet (Bridget) Shultz, John Shultz, Megan Shultz, Stacy, Gretchen, and Kyle Thorson, Tricia (Michael) Jaeger and Jesse (friend, Julia Wilson) Thorson, and Justin and Jace Schroeder; 10 great-grandchildren, Laney, Kennedy, Nadia, Tanner, Katelyn Rose, Clay, Alex, Morgan, Madelyn, and Zachariah; one brother, Lowell Shultz, of Charles City; sister-in-law, Genevieve Sorenson; and several nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Raymond, Lloyd, Dean, Don, and Clyde.

Louise was born May 25, 1913, one of twin daughters to Herman and Barbara (Deutsch) Bintz at Minden, Neb. She graduated from South High School in Omaha, Neb.

Louise married Paul Hefty in 1941 at Mound, Neb. They lived in Nebraska and California.

Following her husband’s death in 1950 she moved to Clear Lake. She worked for the Clear Lake school system in the cafeteria for 28 years, retiring in 1978.

She enjoyed cooking, visiting with people, walking and going out to eat.

She will be sadly missed by her son, Earl Hefty, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Kristin Poss and her husband, Mike, of Carrollton, Ga., Brent Hefty, of Dunwoody, Ga., Aaron Hefty, of Spring Dale, Ark., David Hefty and his wife, Danette, of Rapid City, S.D., and Darin Hefty, of Federal Way, Wash.; five great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Jeannie Hefty, of Conrad, Iowa, and her children, Dawn Skellenger and her husband, Mitch, and Stephen Neff; a nephew, Loren Wilcox and his wife, Jane, of Henderson, Nev.; and a niece, Janelle Sargent and her husband, Dale, and her mother, Nel Wilcox, of Clear Lake, Iowa.
