CLEAR LAKE — Randy Dean Bryan, 48, of 11 S. 19th St. Clear Lake, died Monday (Aug. 30, 2004) at Duncan Heights Care Center in Garner.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be made to the Randy Bryan Memorial Fund.

Randy was born Aug. 16, 1956, the son of Roger and Janice (Zahner) Bryan at Webster City.

After high school, Randy worked for the Clear Lake Bakery.

He attended NIAAC and graduated with a degree in drafting.

Randy worked as a draftsman for Andrews Prestress Concrete in Clear Lake and Seabee Corp. in Hampton. He also drove truck for Ruan & Iowa Motor Transport in Garner.

Randy married Debbie Edgar on July 3, 1981, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, collecting old coins, playing cards, cribbage, and being on the computer.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Randy is survived by his wife, Debbie Bryan, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Heather Sheahan and Andrea Bryan, both of Clear Lake; two granddaughters, Mackenzie and Morgan Sheahan of Clear Lake; father, Roger Bryan, of Gowrie; two brothers, Ivan (YeVonne) Bryan, of Jewell, and Jim (Wendy) Bryan of Webster City; sister, Jenny David of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; mother-in-law, Bonnie Edgar, of Clear Lake, several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, and father-in-law, Darrell Edgar.

MASON CITY — Douglas W. Slonczewski, 53, of 645 First St. S.E., died Monday (Aug. 30, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

SHEFFIELD — Genevieve E. Deshler, 85, of Sheffield, died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 2004) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Grace Baptist Church, 323 Gilman St. in Sheffield, with the Rev. Ken Livingston officiating. Interment will be in Westfork Cemetery, Sheffield.

MASON CITY — Ramona R. Ramirez, 71, of Mason City died (Aug. 30, 2004) at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Ramona R. Ramirez was born April 10, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Henry and Jesusita (Guajardo) Rivas.

Ramona attended Mid-Elementary School and Poe Junior High School in San Antonio, Texas.

She worked as a seamstress when she was 14 years old.

She was united in marriage to George Nava in 1948. To this union four children were born.

In 1964, she and two sons moved to Mason City, where she worked at Mode-O’Day.

She married Richard Ramirez in 1964. She and Richard opened a restaurant LaCasita, serving authentic mexican food.

She later worked for Mercy Medical Center as a dietician until she retired.

She loved to crochet, play Bonanza Bill, and rummy. Her greatest love was her family.

She is survived by children, Rebecca Nava and her special friend, Jack Newman, of Mason City, Victor and his wife, Cathy, of Mason City, George L. Nava, of Washington, and Sylvia and her husband, Jose Neaves, of San Antonio; step-children, Joe Ramirez, of Albert Lea, Minn., Donald Ramirez, of Albert Lea, Ester Ramirez, of Albert Lea, Tony Ramirez, of Albert Lea, David Ramirez, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Rachael Gonzalez, of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Crystal Noland and her fiance, Larry Mann, of Anamosa, Adriana Nava, of New Jersey, Jorge Nava, of New Jersey, Elva Nava, of Mason City, Julian Nava, of Mason City, Valerie Nava, of Las Vegas, Pablo Nava, of Tacoma, Wash., Sasha Nava, of Tacoma, Tomasita “Nena” Hernandez and her husband, Alfredo, of San Antonio, Texas, Jose M. NORTHWOOD — Timen J. Brunsvold, 94, of Northwood, died on Monday, (Aug. 30, 2004) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, with Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.

Timen was born on Dec. 27, 1909, in Worth County, Iowa, the 10th child to Ole S. and Regina (Ellingson) Brunsvold. He was baptized and confirm-ed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church. He graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1927.

Timen married Alyce Johnson on Dec. 17, 1936, at the parsonage in Kensett. He farmed all his life in Worth County, before moving to Maple Court, Northwood, in 2000.

Timen served 30 years as a 4-H leader and also worked at the Worth County fair for many years. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and board games, as well as sports of all kinds. He loved and cherished his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

He is survived by three sons, Ronald (Susan) of Topeka, Kan.; Jerry (Betty) of Lake Mills; Arlee (Marcia) of Boone; 10 grandchildren, Kirsti Brunsvold, Robert Brunsvold, Corey Brunsvold, Thayne Brunsvold, Alan Brunsvold, Jane Brunsvold, Julie Larson, Jody Brunsvold, Todd Brunsvold, Brad Brunsvold; five great grandchildren, Zachary, Brett and Jackson Brunsvold, Benjamin and Luke Larson; one step great-grandchild, Heather Eck; three step great-great grandchildren.

Timen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alyce; an infant son; one sister, Olga Jetson; eight brothers, Nels Alfred, Nels Albert, Nels Melvin, Carl, Almer, Albert, Selmer and Ernest.

Douglas W. Slonczewski was born April 26, 1951, at Chicago, Ill., a son of William and Victoria (Trzyna) Slonczewski. He was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Gaubatz on July 29, 1994, at Mason City.

Doug attended school in Chicago. For many years he worked as an auto body repairman, including operating All Car Auto Body in Mason City for several years.

Along with his wife, Doug owned and operated Sluggo’s Taste of Chicago restaurant in Mason City.

Doug loved to cook and sing karaoke. He had a passion for music, especially the Beatles. Doug cherished his family and had a very special bond with his son, Dougie.

MASON CITY — Hazel J. Scholl, 83, of Mason City, took the next step of life’s journey to be with her Lord on Wednesday (Sept. 1, 2004).

Hazel J. Harringa was born May 23, 1921, the daughter of Herman and Frieda (Thorne) Harringa in Union Slough, Kossuth County.

Hazel and husband, Richard L. Scholl, owned and operated Al & Dick’s Wrecker and Crane Service for many years.

Survivors include her children, Diana Bork, Woden; Ron Scholl and wife, Jan, Flushing, Mich.; Linda Kennedy and husband, Melvin, Burchinal; Bonnie Olson, Mason City; Kay Ingersoll and husband, Bob, Sheffield; Karen Scholl, Forest City; Rick Scholl and wife, Tammy, North Charleston, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Myrtle Oudekerk, Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Anna Harringa, Forest City; brother-in-law, Bud and wife, Wilma Scholl; and sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harley (Jean) Scholl and Mrs. Ed (Pat) Scholl, all of Rockwell.

HANLONTOWN — Francis J. Ouverson, 83, of Hanlontown, died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 2004) at his rural home.

Francis John Ouverson, the son of John and Elizabeth (Robison) Ouverson, was born July 21, 1921 at Fertile. He graduated from Fertile High School and farmed with his father and brother in the Fertile area. On Dec. 26, 1943, he married Olga Johnson at his parents’ home in Fertile. They lived all of their married life in rural Hanlontown, where they farmed.

Francis enjoyed his grandchildren, horses, fishing and gardening. His top priority was being a faithful follower of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and sharing his faith with others, especially his family.

He was a member of Harvest Time Church in Mason City.

Francis is survived by his three children, Dr. Richard (Dr. Anna) Ouverson of Madison, S.D.; Joyce (Leon) Hagen of Hanlontown; and Craig Ouverson of Hanlontown; five grandchildren, John (Sara) Ouverson, Dr. William (Abbey) Ouverson, Christopher (Beth) Hagen and Eric Hagen and Michael Hagen; two great- grandchildren, Lydia and Nicholas Ouverson; a brother-in-law, Loris Scobee of Fertile; four sisters-in-law, Marian (Ralph) Mulder of Slayton, Minn.; Evelyn Johnson of Mason City; Elvira (Russell) Olson of Cedar Rapids; and Silence Johnson of Fertile; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Olga, Dec. 9, 2002; his parents; a brother, Allen Ouverson; and two sisters, Mavis Hall and Maxine Scobee.

CLEAR LAKE — Erna Rodenbeck Lawyer, 91, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 2004) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with the lay assistant, Richard Scott, presiding. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.

Erna was born on Aug. 11, 1913, in rural Bristow to Henry and Mary (Wiegman) Schrage. She attended rural Butler County schools.

Erna married Art Rodenbeck on April 23, 1933, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Later, she married Graham Lawyer in Clear Lake.

Erna worked as a seamstress for P.T. Castle Co. in Clear Lake. She enjoyed sewing, baking pies and especially enjoyed spending the holidays with her family. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and the Joy Circle.

She is survived by her daughter, Arleen and her husband, Cecil Radcliffe, of Bristow; her grandson, Rick Radcliffe and his wife, Angie, of Brooklyn, Iowa; and grandson, Rod Radcliffe and his wife, Julie, of Hampton; sisters, Laura Oltman of Allison and Louise Wubbena of Bristow; sisters-in-law, Edna Schrage of Allison and Irene Rodenbeck of Charles City; great-grandchildren, Monica, Adam, Tyler and Koby Radcliffe; and step great-grandchildren, Erin Henkle and Steve and Morgan Hawkins; one step great great-grandson, L.J. DR. WARREN L. JONES


SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Dr. Warren L. Jones, 83, died on Monday (Aug. 30, 2004) at Sioux Valley Hospital.

Warren was born on July 28, 1921, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of T.D. Jones, M.D., and Dorothy Smith. Warren graduated from high school in Bowdle, S.D., and then attended the University of South Dakota. Warren continued his education at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

While in his sophomore year of medical school, he was inducted into the ASTP program with the United States Army and was allowed to continue his education. Upon graduation from medical school in July 1945, he was discharged from ASTP and began his internship at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Upon completion of his internship, he received orders to report for active duty at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. Warren received an honorable discharge on May 28, 1948.

Dr. Jones was united in marriage with Alverna Blair in Geddes, S.D., on Aug. 14, 1943. In 1951, they moved to Sioux Falls and Dr. Jones began his practice in internal medicine. Alverna died on Sept. 8, 1987.

Dr. Jones was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the South Dakota state and American Medical Association, South Dakota Society of Internal Medicine, an association member of the American College of Physicians, a fellow with the American College of Physicians, a consultant at the VA hospital, Professor of Medical Clinical Association, Professor of Physiology from 1951 to 1955.

He has published 12 professional papers in the South Dakota Journal of Medicine. His medical students honored him with their distinguished professor award in 1963 and 1970. He was named outstanding clinical professor in 1975, was assistant dean of affairs at the University of South Dakota Medical School from 1964 to 1975, and full professor from 1975 to 2001. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1980 from the South Dakota Medical Association, South Dakota Chapter of the American College of I.M. Physicians, Society of I.M., received the Regional Meeting Award in September 1985, the Internist of the Year in September 1986. Dr. Jones was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1993, received the Community Health Service Award in 1995, and received the Friends of Nurses Award in 2001.

On Jan. 30, 1988, Dr. Jones married Marilyn Venezia. Dr. Jones was a firm believer in physical fitness and enjoyed sailing, cross-country skiing, biking, canoeing and birdwatching. He enjoyed woodworking and carved many types of birds and ships.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Barb (Martin) Weber, Sioux Falls, Tom Jones, Sioux Falls, Kathy (Bob) Malecki, Minneapolis, Minn., Susan Jones, Minneapolis, Laura (Jim) Sundet, Vermillion, S.D., Blair Jones, Sioux Falls, Ruth (Jack) Sundet, Crooks, S.D., Anne (Doug) Flynn, Mason City; four step-children, Sherry Venezia, Cocoa Beach, Fla., Bart (Melinda) Venezia, Jr., Mc-Kinney, Texas, David Venezia, Sioux Falls, Michael (Mary) Venezia, Lake City, Pa.; 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Alverna, his wife, Marilyn Venezia Jones, and a sister, Marjorie Howard, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation for the public begins at 3 p.m and continues until 5 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Visitation will continue at First Presbyterian Church with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Thursday. The family will be present following the service.

THOMPSON — John T. Appelhons, 89, of Thompson, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 2004) at his home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Thompson Color Guard and burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

HEWITT, Minn. — Tim Driskell, 64, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Hewitt, passed away at the Lakewood Systems Hospital in Staples, Minn., on Thursday, (Sept. 2, 2004) with his wife by his side.

Funeral services for the reverend will begin with a visitation on Sunday, (9/5/04) from 3 until 5 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Hewitt with a time of sharing at 4:30 p.m. A visitation will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Osseo, Minn., on Monday, (9/6/04), from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. Arrangements are with the Domian-Anderson Funeral Home in Bertha.

Tim Driskell was born May 5, 1940, in Paxton, Ill., the oldest son of George William Lesley Driskell and Lena Rosalee (Meredith) Driskell. Raised in Illinois and Indiana, he married Alice Marie Goold on Aug. 15, 1964, at Pontiac, Ill.

A graduate of Pontiac, Ill., High School (1958); Vennard College, University Park, Iowa, (1964); and Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri (1975), Tim was ordained as an elder by the International Church of the Nazarene in August 1969. He ministered with the denomination as pastor and evangelist for 40 years, serving churches in Mystic, Ottumwa, Mason City, Keokuk, Iowa; Buhl, Idaho; Mattoon and Madison, Wis.; and Spring Lake Park, Minn.. He currently served the congregation of Hewitt, Minn.

Tim was a former member of Rotary International, served on numerous committees for the Church of the Nazarene including the Board of Ministerial Studies for the Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota districts, and he served as secretary of that board for the Iowa district. He was also a member of the District Advisory Board for Wisconsin and served as secretary in that capacity for two years. He was voted Pastor of the Year of the Wisconsin District in 1999; elected Wisconsin District delegate to the International Church of the Nazarene General Assembly for year 2001.

Pastor Driskell deeply loved the people of each church he served. Both his first pastoral assignment (Mystic, Iowa) and his last pastoral assignment (Hewitt, Minnesota) were selected as “Church of the Year” by their respective state districts.

He was a very proud father to his daughter, Teresa Marie Cleveland, and his son, Micah Wayne Driskell, both of whom survive him, along with his wife, Alice. Tim is also survived by three grandsons, Chase Winslow Cleveland, Westin Scott Cleveland, Trei Milton Driskell, and one granddaughter, Savanna Faye Driskell; his son-in-law Scott Cleveland and daughter-in-law Renee Clapp Driskell; a brother David Driskell (Marsha) of Plano, Iowa; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Josephine Goold Harris (Brandon, S.D.); Rev. Jim and Linda (Goold) Hulett, (Mecosta, Mich.); Dr. William and Thelma Goold (Wilmore Ky.); and Dr. Stephen and Pamela Goold (Maple Grove Minn.); 12 nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; and 4 great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lena Driskell; his parents-in law, Rev. Donald and Cordelia Goold; and one brother-in-law Rev. William Russell Harris.

For a personal note of interest, Tim was a painter on the side. He loved the feel of a paint brush in his hands and never lost the sense of pride felt in a job well done, a lesson taught to him at the age of 12, by his father. He painted every parsonage he was privileged to live in.

Memorials may be given in Tim’s honor to the Staples, Minn., hospital cancer unit, and/or the Hewitt Community Church of the Nazarene “Timothy Youth Ministry” fund.

MASON CITY — Randy George Forcier, 48, of 111 14th Street N.E., died Thursday, (Sept. 2, 2004), at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the First Baptist Church, 125 East State Street, with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church.

According to his wishes and to further the study of human illnesses, and to help in eradicating diseases, his body was donated to the Mayo Clinic Department of Anatomy in Rochester, Minn.

Randy George Forcier was born on Jan. 8, 1956, in Hutchinson, Minn., the son of Henry and Mildred (Vokal) Forcier. He received his education in the Hutchinson Public School system, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1975. Randy also graduated from Mankato State College with a bachelor of science degree in physical education and history. He was united in marriage to Lori Rumble.

Randy worked for the Electrolux Co. in Minnesota and Iowa and also worked for Filter Queen Co. in Mason City. He was united in marriage to Patricia Cretsinger on Aug. 26, 1995, at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. Randy also owned and operated All Brands Vacuum Store in Mason City, and until the time of his death he owned and operated PRF Communications in Mason City.

He enjoyed collecting Eagles, woodworking, was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan, and loved his family, friends and his three dogs, Bridgette, Teddy Bear and Tiffany.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patricia Forcier, of Mason City; five children, Matthew Forcier of Crystal, Minn., Beth Hecksel and her husband, Dan, of Plato, Minn., Brent Forcier of Mound, Minn., Amber Willenborg of Mason City, and Brian Matthias of Mason City; three brothers, Tony Forcier and his wife, Colleen, Elmer Forcier and his wife, Brenda, and Gary Forcier and his wife, Angie, all of Hutchinson, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Elvern Mickles and her husband, Gary, of Minnesota. Randy is also survived by his special family, Karen and Ron Mueller, Lisa Mueller, R.J. Mueller, and Brooke and Skylar, all of St. Ansgar; as well as other relatives and many friends.

GARNER — Richard L. Starry, 67, of Garner died Thursday (Sept. 2, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Richard LeRoy Starry, the son of Frank and Ramona (Iliff) Starry, was born Dec. 26, 1937, at Webster City. He attended school in Webster City.

On Dec. 23, 1956, he married Ilo Mae Simons at Webster City. They lived in Maquoketa, Clear Lake and for the past 14 years in Garner. Richard was employed at Fareway Stores for 15 years and Caterpillar for 20 years, retiring in 1988.

Following his retirement, he did some carpentry work and worked at C and A Hobby and Miniature Shop in Mason City. He enjoyed building dollhouses and collecting planes, trains and toys.

Richard loved spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren and two dogs, Lizzie and Fritz.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ilo Mae Starry of Garner; daughter, Barbara Kruser and husband, Gregory, of Maquoketa; son, Shawn Starry and wife, Hope, of Garner; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Travis, Derek, Kathryn, Joseph, Cody and Brooke; two great grandchildren, Daisy Mae and Rasta; and two sisters, Kay Ades of Indianola and Jeanne Taylor of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Nancy Lewis; granddaughter, Carla Fadale; and a sister, Sue Dahlager.

Lloyd Robert Loux was born December 31, 1919, in Wall Lake Township, Wright County, the son of John R. and Mary (Carpenter) Loux.

Lloyd attended Lake Township School in Wright County. He married Shirley (Lindsey) Loux on July 14, 1940. To this union, two children were born. They lived and farmed in Woolstock, Iowa. He worked as a parts man for Howie Implement in Garner for 12 years. He retired in 1983 from Iowa Mold and Tool in Garner.

Lloyd enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and remodeling houses, but his greatest love was his family.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Miller. He also attended Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He especially enjoyed church services in the park.

Sylvester William Thilges, the son of John and Susana (Etringer) Thilges was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Ottosen, Iowa. He received his education at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in West Bend.

On Oct. 19, 1937, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Besch in Whittemore, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in St. Joseph, Iowa, for one year before moving to West Bend where they farmed during their married lives. The couple moved to town in West Bend in 1977. They had been residents of the West Bend Care Center for the past five years.

Survivors include three sons, James (Dea) Thilges of Clear Lake, Glen (JoAnn) Thilges of West Bend and Ervin (Gayle) Thilges of West Bend; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Edwin (Thelma) Thilges of West Bend; and sisters, Alice Gartner of Mapleton, Minn., Lucille (Alfred) Bormann of Bancroft, and Fidelis (Clarence) Frideres of Algona.

HAMPTON — Karl Vernon Butson, 89, of Hampton, died Saturday (Sept. 4, 2004) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Karl was born March 30, 1915, in Geneva to Joseph and Wava (Wagner) Butson.

He graduated from Hampton High School. Karl married Lena Smidt on Feb. 17, 1953, at the Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha. He made his living as a farmer and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, farming, traveling and camping. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events.

Karl was a member of the Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Butson of Hampton; a daughter, Joyce and her husband, John, and their children, Katie, Erin, Matthew, and Kelley of Nora Springs; a son, Dale and his wife, Janeen, and their children, Kyle, Andrea Butson, and Colt Powers of Hampton; a brother, Robert, and his wife, Birdell Butson, of Geneva; a sister-in-law, Mathilda Butson of Hampton.

MASON CITY— Ethel (Gratias) Moser Taylor, 87, of Mason City died Thursday, (August 26, 2004) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia Avenue in Mason City with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. A private family inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Ethel Taylor was born on September 21, 1916, in Rock Grove Township near Nora Springs to Hugo and Katherine (Ahrens) Gratias. She attended rural school in the Rock Grove Township, attended two years of high school in Nora Springs and two years in Rockford, graduating in 1933. Ethel took a Normal Training Course in Rockford which certified her to teach school. She attended night and summer school classes until she had earned her bachelor of arts degree (in elementary education) in 1965. She taught school a total of 35 years, all but two years in Floyd County.

Ethel was active in the Methodist Church in Marble Rock and the Sarah Circle at First United Methodist Church in Mason City. She had also been active in the local retired teachers organization, the Legion Auxiliary and the Alchor Shrine.

On March 11, 1940, she married Leonard Moser and they made their home on a farm in Scott Township. To this union a daughter, Frances Marlene, was born. Leonard passed away in 1967. In 1969, Ethel married Harold Taylor. They lived on a farm west of Marble Rock until moving to Mason City in 1988.

She is survived by her daughters, Marlene Gjerset and husband, David, of Minneapolis, Minn., Mary Scott and husband, Craig, of Chariton; one son, Jack Taylor and wife, Marcia, of Marble Rock; two brothers, Art Gratias of Mason City and Paul Gratias of Osage. Other survivors include, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; first husband, Leonard Moser; second husband, Harold Taylor; three sisters, Dorothy Gratias, Helen Quandal and Lorraine Lindeman; two brothers, Walter Gratias and Ralph Gratias.

Ethel Maurine Crail was born February 16, 1938, at Colesburg, Iowa, a daughter of Maurice and Mary Ethel (O’Neal) Smock. She was united in marriage to Gaylen Crail on May 6, 1961, at Cedar Rapids.

Maurine was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, Dubuque. She worked at Collins Radio, Cedar Rapids, Britt Tech, Britt, and as a client development worker at North Central Human Services, Forest City, for several years. Most recently, she worked at Pete’s Kitchen, Mason City.

She enjoyed embroidery, reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and caring for her family.

ETHEL MARIE LANTZ


NASHUA — Ethel Marie Lantz, 83, of Osage, formerly of Nashua, died Thursday afternoon (Sept. 2, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Medical Center in Osage.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday at the Funeral Home.

Ethel Marie Lantz was born Oct. 27, 1920 at Nashua, the daughter of Ivan B. and Pearl F. (Smith) Riggs. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1939 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years, earning her teacher’s certificate. Ethel taught school for the next 10 years.

She was united in marriage to Earl Lantz on May 24, 1952, in Austin, Minn. They made their home in Nashua where their two sons were born. Ethel moved to Charles City in 2001 and had recently moved to the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Ethel was a member of Nashua United Methodist Church and the Willing Workers Club.

She loved music and taught piano lessons to a number of children. She made sure all her grandchildren had an appreciation of music. She will be happily remembered for her sense of humor. Ethel’s hobbies also included water color painting, crocheting, knitting and she always had a large vegetable and flower garden to tend to.

Ethel is survived by two sons, James D. (Linda) Lantz of Rudd and Francis B. (Carolyn) Lantz of Charles City; eight grandchildren, Lisa Sinnwell, Marc and Jared Lantz, Frank, Jason, Chad, Daniel and Paul Lantz; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Leona Carter both of Nashua; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Riggs of Charles City and Irma Stufflebeam of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl R. Lantz on Oct. 14, 1987; her parents, and one brother, William Riggs.

LESLIE D. OSLER

GLENWOOD — Leslie D. Osler, 69, of 114 E. Green St., Glenwood, Iowa died early Friday morning (September 3, 2004) at Park Place Care Center in Glenwood.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Scott of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 2nd St. S.E. Mason City.

Leslie was born on February 25, 1935, in Iowa City, one of six children to Amos Edward and Florence Gertrude (Curtis) Osler.

At a very early age, Leslie’s brother Virgil, saved his life from an accident that subsequently caused brain damage to Les. At age 11, he attended the Woodward State Hospital School. Over the rest of his life Les spent time living with his mother and stepfather, as well as various county homes and other institutions in Cherokee, Independence, Cerro Gordo County, Clear Lake and other locations.

For the past fourteen years, he has resided at Park Place in Glenwood, Iowa, which is a home for the mentally disabled. While there, he enjoyed working in the sheltered workshop, going for walks, “shooting some hoops” and trying to read and write even though his mental abilities were at kindergarten level. He also enjoyed watching television.

Leslie will be thought of kindly by his family and care-takers.

Leslie is survived by two sisters, Shirley Sage, Mason City and Evelyn Musick, Chariton, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Sandra Osler, Decorah; a niece and nephew, Florence Winter and Clayton Sage, both of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Virgil, Norman and Eddie Osler.
