WAYNE D. ‘SMITTY’ SCHMIDT

MASON CITY —Wayne D. “Smitty” Schmidt, 82, of 1161 Eastmoor Drive, died Wednesday morning (Sept. 15, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church UCC, 100 First St. N.E. in Mason City, with Pastor Sam Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will be in Alden Township Cemetery in Alden.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials may direct them to the First Congregational Church UCC in Mason City or to Hospice of North Iowa.

Wayne D. Schmidt was born June 5, 1922, in his parents’ home in Reinbeck, Iowa. Wayne was one of six children born to Emil T. and Johannah (Petersen) Schmidt.

“Smitty,” as he was affectionately known by family and friends with the exception of a few years, was raised in Reinbeck, where he graduated from Reinbeck High School at the age of 16 in the class of 1939.

During high school he worked planting in the first asparagus field in Reinbeck and detassling corn for Pioneer Seed.

Following graduation he began work as a delivery and salesman for Peter Pan Bread. It was on his bread route that he met his wife of nearly 60 years, Lucille, at Clifton’s Supermarket in Iowa Falls.

On Jan. 14, 1945, Wayne was united in marriage to Lucille J. Pingel in Alden.

After a short two-month partnership in the tiling business, “Smitty” launched into the machinist trade, doing piecework from his own shop for Heisler Manufacturing Co. in Hudson.

Machining was “Smitty’s” true passion in life and he was later hired by Heisler.

Always the entrepreneur, in 1952 “Smitty” purchased a dairy in Reinbeck, bottling milk and making ice cream until 1963.

After a few months of being the state milk inspector, selling securities and starting his next business venture, “Smitty’s” dairy was back in his possession. He later sold the dairy to Anderson Erickson Dairy.

Having learned refrigeration from maintaining the coolers and freezers at the dairy, “Smitty’s” next pursuit was in the wholesale business, selling heating, air conditioning and appliance parts.

“Smitty” and a partner began Mid States Supply Inc. After making sales calls throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, “Smitty” and his family moved to Mason City in 1966.

In addition to sales, he often trained others in refrigeration and other repairs. “Smitty” bought out his partner and successfully ran Mid States until 1982, when he sold out to the G.A. Larson Company.

Throughout the years “Smitty” enjoyed tinkering with his antique cars, golfing, fishing and traveling.

He served the Reinbeck Community as a City Council member, volunteer fireman, church trustee and Boy Scouts Explorers Troop co-founder. His ability to fix just about anything and to tell a good joke or story will be sorely missed.

The couple made their home in Mason City for 38 years.

“Smitty” was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC, the North Iowa Vintage Auto Club, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Reinbeck and the Shriners.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in “Smitty’s” life are his loving and devoted wife, Lucille J. Schmidt of Mason City; his three children, Dr. Gregory Wayne Schmidt and his wife, Dr. Brigitte Bruns, of Bishop, Ga., Roberta Lea Tigges and her husband, Gary, of Tipton, Iowa, and Jody Kimball and her husband, Gene, of Ham Lake, Minn.; six grandchildren, Theron Schmidt and his wife, Rajni Shah; Katherine Tigges, Tobias Schmidt; Nicholas Schmidt; Bradley Kimball and Daniel Kimball; one brother, Clarence Schmidt and his wife, Odessa, of Austin, Minn.; two sisters, Florence Rickert of Reinbeck, Iowa, and Donna Matheson and her husband, Robert, of Jefferson, Iowa.

“Smitty” is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

“Smitty” was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Vertus Schmidt and Leon Schmidt.
