Gerald Damien O’Brien, the son of
Terence and Shelia (Mackey) O’Brien, was
born Dec. 14, 1935, in Melbourne,
Australia. He was educated in Australia.
He became a priest with the Missionaries
of the Sacred Heart (MCS). He was later
sent to Japan to join the MCS mission
there. While in Japan, he graduated from
the language school of the International
Christian University in Tokyo. He also
completed a master’s degree in theology
at Sophia University in Tokyo.
After spending five years in Japan, he
came to the United States where he
received his Ph.D. in human behavior
from the United States International
University in San Diego, Calif.
He left the priesthood in 1970. He
married Charmaine Horvath in September
of 1970 in LaJolla, Calif. The couple
had two children, Damien and Megan as
well as Charmaine’s daughter, Eve.
Charmaine died of cancer in January of
1978.
Gerry married Jean (Searcy) Fathuer in
March of 1979 in Janesville, Wis.,
making a family of five including Jean’s
daughter Sara from a previous marriage.
Following receipt of his doctorate in
January 1971, he spent four years at
Urbana College in Ohio, in varying
capacities. In 1977 he was employed at
the Rock County Health Care Center in
Janesville, Wis., a complex of mental
mealth and long-term care services
comprising two out-patient clinics,
acute psychiatric and alcohol and drug
units, special psychiatric units, and
skilled care nursing home, with a total
of 500 employees.
He served in several clinical and
administrative capacities with
increasing responsibility, eventually
becoming the director of the complex.
In 1984, the family moved to Mason City
where he became the director of the
North Iowa Transition Center.
He was responsible for building the
organization into a widely acclaimed
program for people with serious and
persistent mental illness, for which he
received several state awards.
In 1993, with great pride, Gerry became
a citizen of the United States.
Retirement came in 1997, which gave him
the opportunity to write about some of
his experiences with the Iowa mental
health system in his book, “This Crazy
Mental Health Business.”
Gerry remained a student all of his
life. He kept up his theological
studies, maintaining the practice of his
Catholic faith.
He read widely in history, philosophy,
current events, politics, and
literature.
He loved the music of the Classical and
Romantic Eras, as well as American
musical comedy.
He often expressed his regret that so
many people missed out on the joys to be
found with the great authors, composer,
and artists. Returning home to Australia
was very important to him. He and Jean
made numerous trips back to visit family
and friends even as recently as several
months ago.
Gerry is survived by his wife, Jean, of
Mason City; children, Damien O’Brien of
Des Moines, Megan O’Brien Honas and her

born grandson, Kevin Jeffery Honas, six

Stewart of Oregon, Ill.; two
brothers-in-law, Walter Searcy and his
wife Charlene of Whittier, Iowa, and Tom
Searcy and his wife Pam of Stoddard,
Wis., and many nieces and nephews here
and in Australia.
Gerry was able to experience the joy of
becoming a granddad because of the early
arrival of his grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents
