OSCAR ORTIZ

MASON CITY — Oscar Ortiz, 74, of 1109 N. Taylor Ave., died Monday afternoon (May 3, 2004) of complications following a heart attack earlier in the week. He passed away peacefully at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa with his children at his side.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. The Spanish/English rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m., followed by a scripture service beginning at 7 p.m.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Oscar Ortiz Memorial Fund.

Oscar Ortiz was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Crystal City, Texas, to Pedro and Nicolasa (Benavides) Ortiz. He was one of eight children born to his parents.

Through the years of his youth, Oscar could be found playing stickball, boxing and developing and maintaining close connections with his relatives in Texas and Mexico.

At the age of 13, Oscar moved with his family to Iowa. Oscar met the love of his life and future wife, Guadalupe “Lupe” Torres at the Mason City Post Office and began “courting her.”

The couple married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City on Nov. 25, 1950, within a year after they met. They became the proud parents of five children.

Many memories were created for Oscar and Lupe as they enjoyed spending time together, weekend car rides, parenting their active children and dancing at area Mexican dances in Albert Lea and Mason City.

Oscar took great pride in providing for his family. He was a brakeman and oiler for Northwestern Railroad in Mason City. Due to Oscar’s love for machinery, his hard work ethic and ambitious nature, he began a 35-year tenure with Armour and Co. in Mason City working as a meat cutter and machinist. He retired in 1983.

In June of 1988, Oscar found himself applying for a “post-retirement” position at Iowa Quality Meats, Ltd. in Clive, Iowa, as a machinist-consultant.

His love of tinkering with small engines and vast knowledge from his years at Armour sparked his curiosity to again join the work force. He formally retired from Iowa Quality Meats in June of 1991.

Oscar was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family Men’s Club, a member of the Mexican-American Death Benefit Foundation and the Senior Citizen’s Center.

He was a volunteer at the Senior Citizen’s Center and a former board member. He and Lupe had been honored with the National Service-AARP Citizens of the Year Award.

Some of Oscar’s favorite interests, hobbies and leisure activities included his love of spicy food, hot chilies and salsa “Mexican ketchup,” taking daily walks, playing pool with the guys at the Senior Citizen’s Center, watching the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Chiefs and the Vikings play ball, immaculately caring for his home and yard and tinkering with engines in his garage. He was nicknamed “MacGyver,” as it always appeared he could fix anything.

Oscar had a great passion toward his children’s educations and spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren.

His sons and daughters fondly describe Oscar as a very devoted Christian husband and father. He rarely missed events his children were involved in and was always near for support.

His six grandchildren will miss their regular trips to Birdsall’s Ice Cream for cool treats with Grandpa.

He will be well-remembered as a hard worker, energetic, happy and proud man with a warm smile.

Oscar made friends easily and along with this friendly nature, claimed, “he’d never met a stranger.”

Following the death of his beloved Lupe last year, Oscar was a shining example to his family and friends that he was able to walk carefully through the stages of grief and yet take great care of himself.

Oscar will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving children, Gloria A. Ortiz of West Des Moines; Oscar John (Kate) Ortiz of Leon, Iowa; Stella Guadalupe Ortiz of Des Moines; Nicholas J. (Kristie) Ortiz of West Des Moines and Laura M. (Cliff) Webb of Carrollton, Texas. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Esteban Ortiz, of Kenosha, Wis.; his six grandchildren, Cristina Ortiz, AnaMarie Ortiz, Antonio Ortiz, Christopher Ortiz, Clarissa Webb and Spencer Webb; and many other special relatives and friends.

Preceding Oscar in death were his wife, Lupe Ortiz; his parents, Pedro and Nicolasa Ortiz; his two sisters, Concepción Ortiz and Felicitas Rodriguez; and his four brothers, Mario, Joe, Armando and René Ortiz.

RUBY M. AMOS

MASON CITY — Ruby M. Amos, 88, of 708 S. Pierce Ave., died Monday (May 3, 2004) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, after a long illness.

Ruby Amos was born Feb. 5, 1916, at Mason City, a daughter of Joseph N. Nowning and Edith M. (Hodges) Nowning.

Ruby was a lifelong resident of Mason City. In early life, she worked as a waitress.

She often spoke with great pride of her ability to carry more hot dishes barehanded from kitchen to table than anyone else she knew.

She was an avid card player. If you couldn’t remember what tricks were played in a game of 500 — Ruby had you for lunch.

She lived in the heart of the downtown area on Federal Avenue for decades — and loved every minute of it.

She enjoyed the noise of traffic, the city waking up, the city eating lunch, and the city having a hard time going to sleep at night.

She lived high above the street, and didn’t mind the stairs at all, even late into her seventies.

Ruby loved going out for coffee. She was a great talker, and thoroughly enjoyed hearing a good joke. She knew that sharing troubles and laughter were both healing.

She is survived by her son, James J. Amos.

She was preceded in death by her son, Randall J. Amos.

In her own way, Ruby reminded us to cherish our blessings wherever we found them. We will remember.
