ROBERT W. MINNIS
OSAGE — Robert W. Minnis, 90, of Osage,
died Tuesday (May 11, 2004) at the
Mitchell County Regional Health Center
Hospice Unit.
Robert was born Nov. 27, 1913, on the
family farm near Riceville, the son of
Arthur and Ethel (Barker) Minnis.
He graduated from Riceville High School
in 1931 and from Hamilton Business
College in Mason City in 1960.
Robert was united in marriage to Allene
McCord on July 6, 1940, at Allene’s
parents’ home in Iowa Falls. Robert
farmed with his father, Arthur, from
1934 to 1955.
He worked as a bookkeeper at Olson Motor
Co. from 1960 to 1982, at Cooper’s Osage
Chrysler for a short time, and at Paul’s
Plumbing and Heating for 10 years until
1999.
Robert enjoyed antique tractors and
cars, and the company of relatives and
friends.
He was a member of the United Church of
Christ in Osage.
Memorial services will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday at the United Church of
Christ in Osage with the Rev. Robert
Melhorn officiating. Inurnment will be
at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville
at a later date.
Following the memorial service, there
will be a time for fellowship and lunch
at the church.
It was Robert’s wish to donate his body
to the Des Moines University Osteopathic
College to further future doctors’
learning and skills.
Memorials may be directed to the Faith
Lutheran Home in Osage or the United
Church of Christ in Osage.
He is survived by his wife, Allene
(McCord) Minnis of Osage; two sons,
William Minnis and his wife, Debbie, of
Sheppard, Mich., and Frank Minnis and
his wife, Sara, of Des Moines; one
daughter, Sara Krueger and her husband,
James, of Neenah, Wis.; eight
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents; one son,
Bruce Minnis; one grandson, Nathan
Krueger; one brother, Roy Minnis, and
two sisters, Isabelle Coleman and Anna
McClanahan.

90, of Ashby, Minn., formerly of Osage,
died Thursday (May 6, 2004) as the
result of a fire at his home.

GARNER — Robert L. Best, 67, of Garner,
died Monday (May 10, 2004) at Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
His memorial service will be held 10:30
a.m. Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic
Church in Duncan with the Rev. Michael
Schueller officiating. Inurnment will be
in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in
Garner.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in
Garner with a Scriptural wake service at
7 p.m.

Robert Leo Best, the son of Herman and
Vera (Young) Best, was born July 15,
1936, at Pomeroy.
At an early age, he moved with his
family to Garner, where he graduated
from high school in 1954.
Following his schooling, Bob worked as a
carpenter in the Garner area.
On March 16, 1957, he married Barbara
Haugo at St. James Catholic Church in
Forest City. They lived in Garner, where
they raised their six children.
In February of 1964, he started Best
Construction. He built many homes in
Garner and the surrounding area as well
as the Garner Country Club. Bob took
pride in his craftsmanship.
He served his country in the Army
Reserves.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling
and was an avid golfer.
Bob also enjoyed watching his children’s
and grandchildren’s activities and
sporting events over the years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic
Church, was a past member of the Garner
Lions Club and a charter member of the
Garner Country Club.
Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara, of
Garner; six children, Carolyn Hejlik

Kathleen Goll (Charles) of Garner, Juli

NORA SPRINGS — Viola Henrietta Bailey,
95, of Nora Springs, died Sunday (May 9,
2004) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev.
Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be
in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora
Springs, and one hour prior to service

The family of Viola Henrietta Bailey has
requested that memorial contributions be
made to the St. Luke Lutheran Church or
to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.
Viola Henrietta Bailey was born on July
11, 1908, in Rock Falls, the daughter of
John and Caroline (Wolert) Christiansen.
She attended and received her education
in the Rock Falls Community Schools,
graduating from Rock Falls High School.
She was united in marriage to Gail Otto
Bailey on April 11, 1929, in Mason City.
He preceded her in death on July 17,
1977.
After their marriage, they farmed in the
Mason City, Nora Springs and Plymouth
areas.
Viola also worked as a sales clerk for
Newberry 5 & Dime, Montgomery Ward, and
also worked as a housekeeper for Mercy
Hospital, all in Mason City.
She enjoyed crocheting, afghans,
flowers, baking, cooking, and playing
cards and games with her neighbors, but
her great love and enjoyment was her
family and friends.
Viola loved her church and was a member
of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora
Springs, and enjoyed quilting with her
church group.
Left to cherish her memory are her
children: Carolynn Nicholson and her
husband, Duane, of Baudette, Minn., John
Bailey and his wife, Alice, of Tawas
City, Mich., Norman Bailey and Pauline
Peterson, of Nora Springs, and Connie
Friedline and her husband, John, of
Apex, N.C.; 18 grandchildren, 50
great-grandchildren and 15 great-great
grandchildren; a sister, Luella
Kaldenberg of Rock Falls, and two

Lyla Katherine Brunsvold was born June
21, 1927, in rural Kensett, the daughter
of Albert L. and Ella B. (Ellingson)
Brunsvold.
She graduated from Kensett High School
in 1945.
Lyla was united in marriage to Maurice
Mentink on Oct. 2, 1955, in Kensett. She
worked for the State of Iowa as a health
aide for 15 years.
Lyla was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church and the Women’s Church Circle.
She loved to play cards, sew, have
coffee with friends and spend time with
her grandchildren. The family would like
to thank the staff at Hospice of Good
Shepherd Health Center and Hospice of
North Iowa for the care Lyla received.

Karen was born Dec. 5, 1941, to Curtis

She worked in banks in Clarion, Mason
City, Des Moines and Mesa, Ariz.
She married Robert Plummer on April
9,1987, in Mesa, Ariz.
She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran
Church, Mesa, Ariz.
She loved music, sang in the choir and
played the piano for enjoyment. She
enjoyed bowling and was very active in a
Moose Lodge in Mesa.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; one

and one grandson, Joshua; her parents,

BRITT — Fred E. Swisher, 81, of
Britt, died Monday (May 10,
2004) at the Hancock County
Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Fred Ernest Swisher, the son of
Ernest and Blanche (Macy)
Swisher, was born May 24, 1922,
at Vermillion, S.D. He attended
school in Vermillion, where he
graduated from high school in
1940.
He was inducted into the U.S.
Army on June 18, 1940, and
served his country as a radio
operator in the Asiatic-Pacific
Theater.
Following his honorable
discharge on June 21, 1945, he
returned to Vermillion and
attended the University of South
Dakota, where he received his
bachelor’s degree in
speech/English.
On Oct. 2, 1954, he married Jean
Sipling at LeGrand. They lived
in Des Moines, Hampton, and in
1957 moved to Britt. Fred taught
school in Rapid City, S.D.,
Hansell, Iowa, and from 1957 to
1986 at Britt.
In his teaching career at Britt
he taught English and was in
charge of the drama department
and debate team. Fred also
taught communication skills at
NIACC in Mason City for 22
years.
He enjoyed his family, golf,
visiting with people and talking
about history, especially World
War II.
He was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Britt,
United Methodist Men and was a
Sunday School teacher.
He also was a member of the
Britt American Legion, Masonic
Lodge and ISEA.
Fred was active in the Hancock
County Little Theatre and was
instrumental in helping organize
it.
Left to cherish his memory is
his wife, Jean, of Britt; three
children, Sherri Schrandt and
husband, Don, of Britt, Deb
Swisher of Nashville, Tenn., and
Terry Swisher of Nashville; four
grandchildren, Gina Riherd of

Genevieve married Charles
Grandon on Jan. 31, 1928, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Laurens. They were the first
couple to be married in that
parish.
They lived in Laurens until July
1946, when they moved to Clear
Lake. Due to her health,
Genevieve moved to Manly to live
with her granddaughter, Jill.
She was a member of St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Clear Lake.
Genevieve is survived by her two

Cement Co. in 1985, he continued
to enjoy his hobbies of trapping
turtles, fishing anywhere they
were “biting” and spending time
telling stories with his
buddies.
Surviving family members include
his wife, Edna; daughters,
Barbara Stewart and her husband,
Mike, Debra Boisen and her
husband, Dwight; and son, Brian
McCaulley and his wife, Karin;
grandchildren, Kari, Kris, and
Korey Peters, and Meghan Shafer;
and great-grandchildren, Eric
and Joselyn. He is also survived
by many nieces and nephews.

Marie was born Sept. 29,
1928, at Grafton, Iowa.
She was the eighth child
born to Albert F. and
Kathrina (Claus) Trettin.
Marie was baptized in
the Emmanuel Lutheran
Church in Grafton. On
March 1, 1929, the
Trettin family moved to
a farm one mile East of
Rockford.
Marie was confirmed in
the Zion Lutheran
Church, Rockford. She
graduated from Rockford
High School in 1946,
having completed two
years of normal training
courses while attending
high school.
She then attended Iowa
State Teachers College
(now the University of
Northern Iowa) for two
years and earned an
elementary teaching
certificate.
Marie taught at the
junior high school in
LaPorte City for two
years.
On July 10, 1949, Marie
was united in marriage
to William “Bill”
Weigand. She continued
to teach in the Rockford
school for four years,
also helping Bill with
their business, “Ice
Cream and Lunch,” which
they owned and operated
for six years.
In 1957, the Weigand
family moved to Rancho
Cordova, Calif. Marie
earned her B.A. at the
University of
California-Sacramento in
1970.
She continued at the U
of C graduate school for
another year and
substituted regularly in
the Folsom School
District.
While in California,
Marie was active as a
Cub Scout den mother,
Junior Girl Scout
leader, Sunday School
Principal, Sunday
School, and Bible School
teacher and assisted
with confirmation
classes.
She was also involved in
community activities and
gave freely of her time
to assist with swim
teams on which her
children participated.
In 1966, Marie was
presented with the
“Mother of the Year”
award for her volunteer
service to school,
church and the community
of Rancho Cordova.
In 1973, the Weigand
family returned to Iowa.
From 1973 until her
retirement in 1994,
Marie taught in the
Rudd-Rockford-Marble
Rock schools, teaching
home economics and
language arts.
She served as a delegate
at the National
Education Association
Convention and the Iowa
State Education
Associate Convention and
was also a local
delegate for the R-R-MR
schools for several
years.
Marie was a member of
the Council of English
Teachers Association and
served as a board member
and president on the
R-R-MR Student Loan
Association.
Marie will long be
remembered as the
“Spelling Bee Coach
Extraordinaire.”
Twenty-eight of her
students progressed to
the state spelling bee,
with most of them
placing in the top five
percent. In 1982, she
accompanied her Iowa
winner to the
Washington, D.C.,
National Spelling Bee.
She was selected by
senior students for the
first edition of Who’s
Who Among American
Teachers and was
selected by Iowa Masons
as one of the five
finalists as Mason
Teacher of the Year,
1992.
Marie was a member of
the Zion Lutheran
Church, Rockford.
She enjoyed playing
bridge, golfing, reading
and traveling. She and
Bill were avid Iowa
Hawkeye fans.

Bob was born in Mason
City, Iowa, on April 11,
1935, to Lester and
Blanche (Nelson) Bailey.
He graduated from Mason
City High School and
from Greenville College
in Illinois, where he
received a BA in
education. While at
Greenville, he met his
wife, Myrtle White.
He was an elementary
teacher for 34 years.
His students were very
special to him.
He was a charter member
of the Free Methodist
Church in Bellevue, Neb.
He served in many
capacities in that body
of Christ until moving
to Fort Collins in 2001.
Christian education was
important to Bob. He
served on the Board of
Trustees of Central
Christian College for 10
years. Gideon
International was a
great part of Bob’s
life. He loved
distributing God’s word.
Since moving to Fort
Collins, Bob had joined
Timberline Church. He
was involved with the
Prime Timers ministry,
which had led to many
friendships.
Bob will be remembered
as a faithful husband,
loving brother, uncle
and Godfather. We will
miss his hugs, his
prayers, his jokes and
his great zest for life.
We rejoice that he is
safe in the arms of his
Heavenly Father.
Bob leaves behind his
wife, Myrtle; sisters,
Margaret Bryant and her
husband, Seth, Waneta
Bagger and her husband,
Richard, Venita
Christian and her

Joy. He will also be

Elroy Francis Hentges
was born Oct. 14, 1916,
at Alta Vista, the son
of Peter and Susan
(Lentz) Hentges.
He attended St. Williams
School in Alta Vista and
then worked for Brady
Transfer & Storage in
Fort Dodge.
He was married in 1944
to Kathleen McKay in
Waucoma.
He enlisted in the U.S.
Navy the day after Pearl
Harbor and served on the
USS Washington as a
gunners mate.
After his discharge, he
returned to Brady
Transfer & Storage.
Elroy later operated a
Standard Oil Station in
Mechanicsville, and
worked at D & D Body
Shop in Lisbon.
He then opened his own
front end alignment shop
in Lisbon known as
Wimp’s Alignment.
He retired and moved to
Alta Vista in 1981.
Elroy enjoyed fishing,
bowling, baseball,
gardening, playing
cards, canning, cooking
and especially visiting
with family and friends.
He was a member of St.
Bernard Church, the Paul
Johann VFW Post in Alta
Vista, a lifetime member
of American Legion Post
106 in Lisbon, and was a
Fourth Degree member of
the Knights of Columbus.

Thora Carpenter was born
Feb. 16, 1905, on her
parents’ farm north of
Goodell, Iowa, the
daughter of Alfred C.

Thora attended country
school through the 8th
grade, then went to high
school in Goodell and
graduated in 1923.
Following her schooling,
she returned home to the
farm for a short period
of time.
On Aug. 26, 1924, she
was united in marriage
to James F. Trees at the
Methodist Church in
Belmond. To this union
two children were born,
a daughter, Cleo, and
son, William “Bill”
Trees.
Thora was a lifelong
homemaker. She was a
member at the United
Methodist Church for
nearly 75 years and had
been active in the UMCW,
Rebecca and Goodwill
Circles, and the Belmond
Senior Citizens.
Thora and her husband
enjoyed spending many
winters in Florida. She
was preceded in death by
her husband, Jim, in
November 1983.
She later moved to the
Belmond Retirement
Community Apartments and
resided there for 18
years prior to becoming
a resident of the care
center in June 2001.
She leaves to mourn her
death, her daughter,

Motors and most recently
at Clear Lake Auto
Sales, which he owned
and operated with his
son, Mark.
He enjoyed traveling and
mission work. He and
Elaine also enjoyed

camps to Mexico over the
years.

56, of Hampton, died Thursday
(May 13, 2004) at his farm in
rural Hampton.

the Hillside Cemetery in
Sheffield.
Dean was born July 24, 1947, in
Hampton to Earl and Mildred
(Rewerts) Eisentrager. He
graduated from Sheffield-Chapin
High School.
He served in the U.S. Army
Reserves.
He was united in marriage to
Linda Ramker on Dec. 30, 1969,
in Mason City.
He farmed, raised livestock and
was employed by Eaton Corp. in
Belmond.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church and was active
in the Knights of Columbus.
Dean’s pride and joy were his
three daughters. He enjoyed
going to all of the girl’s
sporting events and loved
spending time showing hogs at
all of the fairs. He also
enjoyed baby sitting his
daughters’ pug dogs, Asa and
Ady.
He is survived by his mother,
Mildred Eisentrager, of Ackley;
daughter, Joy Lynn Eisentrager
and fiance, Darin Schrader, of
Hampton; daughter, Kari Marie
Eisentrager and fiance, James
McKenna of Story City; and Mindy

Betty Jo Cornell was born Nov.
3, 1921, in Altus, Jackson
County, Okla., a daughter of
Nelson George and Alta Blanche
(Eldridge) Cornell, and died
Wednesday (May 12, 2004) at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
She received her education and
graduated from high school in
Altus and attended junior
college in Altus.
She became employed as a
secretary at Altus Air Base,
where she met and married
Bernard George Brunsma on Sept.
16, 1943. Following his
discharge in 1946 from the Air
Corps they moved to Greene.
Betty was employed as secretary
to the Superintendent of the
Greene Community School District
from 1959 until her retirement
in 1983.
Betty will be remembered for her
love of playing bridge. She was
one of four members who formed a
bridge club named Club 8, which
has been in existence for over
55 years.
Her other interests included
gardening, knitting, word find
puzzles, and reading mystery
books.
Betty’s family and her special
pet, Maggie, was her ultimate
joy.
Living family members include
her beloved husband, Bernard
Brunsma of Greene; her children,
Vicki (Craig) Smeins of Lago
Vista, Texas, and Steve (Barb)
Brunsma of Greene; six
grandchildren: Kelli (Jim)

BARBARA JEAN CHIMBIDIS
AURORA, Ill. — Barbara Jean
Chimbidis (nee Becker), 70, died
April 30, 2004, at her home in
Aurora, surrounded by her
husband and loving family.
Barbara was born in Mason City
on Aug. 13, 1933, the oldest of
four sisters born to Fred and
Rosalinda Becker.
She was preceded in death by her
parents and stepmother, as well
as a younger sister, Rose Lynn.
She is survived by two younger
sisters, Virginia Pedersen and
Marlene Fremin, both of Denver,
Colo.; a half brother, Leonard
Harms, of Forest City; as well
as her husband, James, and her
four children, Steve Kramer, of
New Lennox, Ill., Tom Kramer, of
National City, Calif., Doug
Kramer, of Bollingbrook, Ill.,
and Linda Edwards, of Aurora;
and eight grandchildren.
Barbara had lived in Illinois
since 1969, first in Downers
Grove and later in Aurora.
Services were private.

(May 13, 2004) at the Good
Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Funeral service will be held at
10:30 a.m. Monday at the First
Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar,
with the Rev. Robert Porisch
officiating. Burial will be in
the First Lutheran Cemetery in
St. Ansgar.
