FRANCIS L. JUENGER
STACYVILLE — Francis L. Juenger, 82, of
Stacyville, died Wednesday (June 9, 2004) at the
Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice
Unit in Osage.
Francis was born Jan. 19, 1922, on the family
farm near Stacyville, the son of Joseph and Ida
(Weber) Juenger. He attended Visitation Catholic
Schools in Stacyville.
Francis was united in marriage to Veronica
Mullenbach on Oct. 8, 1955, at St. John’s
Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Minn.
He was employed by the Mitchell County Highway
Department, retiring in 1987.
He also helped local farmers with field work,
haying, and plowing.
Francis enjoyed turtle fishing, hunting,
attending baseball and softball games,
gardening, family and friends. He especially
enjoyed driving his pickup.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m.
Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner,
officiating. Interment will be in the Visitation
Cemetery in Stacyville.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today
at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage,
where there will be a scripture service at 5
p.m. and a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at
6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before
the service on Saturday at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Veronica Juenger, of
Stacy-ville; two sons, Marvin Juenger and his
wife, Jane, of Adams, Minn., and Maurice Juenger
of St. Ansgar; one daughter, Jeanette Losee and
her husband, Duane, of Riceville; grandchildren,
Chad Juenger, Tim Juenger, Jenna Juenger, Ellena
Rivera, Donnie Juenger and his wife, Brandy,
Toleka Juenger, Nathan Juenger, Noah Juenger,
Kellie Switzer and Korey Switzer; three
great-grandchildren, Alex and Jacob Rivera, and
Keandra Juenger; three brothers, Virgil Juenger
and his wife, Louise, of Stacyville, Danny
Juenger and his wife, Bev, of Rochester, Minn.,
and Ron Juenger, of Carpenter and special
friend, Elizabeth Carter; four sisters, Gertrude
Hommez and her husband, Louis, of Osage, Mary
Ann Lammers and her husband, Frank, of Spring
Valley, Minn., Elizabeth Spitz of Osage, and
Barb Collier of St. James, Minn.; and several
nieces and nephews.

VIRGINIA MAE PETERSEN
TRAER — Funeral service for Virginia Mae
Petersen, 94, of Clear Lake, formerly of Traer,
will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the
United Presbyterian Church in Traer, with the
Rev. Rick Vesely officiating. Burial will be in
Buckingham Cemetery in Traer.
There will be church fellowship following
committal service.
Visitation will be begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at
the church.
Virginia Mae Petersen was born on April 21,
1910, at Berryville, Ark., the only daughter of
Matthew and Clara (Fay) Richmond.
She later moved to Traer where she attended the
Traer Public School through the 11th grade.
On Jan. 16, 1929, she was united in marriage to
Peter Iner Petersen of Reinbeck at Waterloo,
Iowa. They made their home first in rural
Reinbeck before moving to Traer in 1934, where
he operated the Traer Produce Co.
Following Iner’s death on Dec. 16, 1979, she
continued to make her home in Traer for a time
before moving to Reinbeck.
In later years she had made her home in Clear
Lake and was a resident of the Oakwood Care
Center, where her death came on Tuesday (June 8,
2004) at the age of 94 years.
She is survived by five children, Donald
Petersen, of Cedar Falls, Dolores “Dolly” Larsen
and husband, Nels, of Clear Lake, Robert
Petersen and wife, Lois, of Chaska, Minn., Lois
Hahn, of Clear Lake and James Petersen and wife,
Mary, of Reinbeck; 14 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren; and four great-
great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ella
Staker of Reinbeck.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Iner;
daughter-in-law, Juanita Petersen; son-in-law,
Carlin Hahn; and four brothers, Andrew, Robert,
Marvin and Walter Richmond.

SHEFFIELD — Edith L. Wihlm, 80, of 1427 Thrush
Ave., Sheffield, died Tuesday (June 8, 2004) at
Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell.
A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday
at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty,
with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating.
Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery,
Dougherty.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today
in the parish center at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church in Dougherty, where a rosary will be said
at 6 p.m., followed by a scriptural wake
service.

Edith L. Wihlm was born Aug. 17, 1923 at
Chippewa Falls, Wis., a daughter of John and
Edna (Pierce) Schick.
She was united in marriage to J. Joseph Wihlm on
Nov. 25, 1943, at Dougherty.
Edith moved to the Dougherty area in 1942. Her
life was centered on her family.
She especially enjoyed raising livestock,
keeping pets and farming. She will be most
remembered for her caring ways and giving to
others.
She is survived by her husband, J. Joseph Wihlm,
of Sheffield; a son, Bernard Wihlm and his wife,
Carol, of Faribault, Minn.; two daughters,
Shirley Campbell and her husband, Bill, of Mason
City, and Patricia Balek and her husband, Lynn,
of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Kristine
Wihlm, of Minnetonka, Minn., Julie Wihlm, of
Faribault, Michael Campbell, of Rockwell,
Melissa Bart, of Sinking Spring, Pa., Dawn
Balek, of Jackson, Miss., Cheri Balek, of Mason
City, and Ann Balek, of Olympia, Wash.; two
great-grandchildren, Logan Campbell, of Mason
City, and Alexandra “Sashi” Bart, of Sinking
Spring.; three step-brothers; and three

MASON CITY — Vivian V. Eppens, 89, of 807 N.
Adams Ave., died Tuesday (June 8, 2004) at home.

S.E., with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky
officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park

Vivian was born June 11, 1914, in Ossian, Iowa,
the daughter of Charles A. “Fred” and Mary Ellen
(Broderick) Barr. She attended St. Francis
DeSales Catholic School in Ossian.
Vivian moved to Calmar in 1932. She married
Bural H. Eppens on July 19, 1932, in Ossian.
They moved to Mason City in 1935. Vivian worked
for Mason City Tent & Awning for a short time
during World War II, then for Jacob E. Decker
and Sons for 27 years. She retired in 1973.
Vivian was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church.
Vivian is survived by her son, Duane L. Eppens
and wife, Barbara, of Mason City; daughters,
Marlene Ann Tvedt, of Mason City, Carolee J.
Mejia, of Mason City, and Diane J. Degen, of
Mason City; 22 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; seven
great-great-grandchildren; sister, Valeria
Sabelka of Decorah; and several nieces and
nephews.

MASON CITY — Jonathan (John) C. Lundahl, 66, of
Mason City, died suddenly Wednesday (June 9,
2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in
Mason City.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday
at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N.
Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City. Rev. Kenneth
Hatland, Trinity Lutheran Church, will

John was born July 30, 1937, in Wayne, Neb., the
son of Carl and Lillian (Groh) Lundahl, and was
raised on a farm in Belden, Neb. He graduated
from Belden High School in 1956.
He married Sandra Ringis Aug. 9, 1959, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. They
moved to Sioux City, where John was employed at
a Buick garage. They returned to Mason City in
1960, and daughter Jean was born in 1964.
In Mason City, John worked for the Mason City
Brick and Tile Co., Consolidated Foods, and
retired from Key Wholesale. He was currently
working part time for the Mason City Parks and
Recreation Department.
John was a very outgoing person who enjoyed
visiting with everyone and was always ready to
lend a helping hand when needed. His hobbies
included fishing, hunting, going to dances and
spending time with his dog “Sally.”
John was a member of the Moose Lodge in Mason
City, Eagles of Albert Lea, Minn., Teamsters
Local 828, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle
Association, and was a co-founder of the Mason
City Rifle and Pistol Club.
John is survived by his daughter, Jean, and her
husband, Brad Heagel, of Kensett, and a special
friend, Jan Anderson, of Goodell.
John was preceded in death by his parents and
his grandparents.

EVELYN GRACE ‘EVIE’ CLANCY
ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Funeral services for Evelyn
G. Clancy, age 78, of Albert Lea will be held at
10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Church
of St.Theodore, Albert Lea, Minnesota. Father
Robert Schneider will officiate. Interment will
be in St. Theodore’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today with a
prayer service at 7:30 p.m.today. Visitation

Evie died Friday (June 11, 2004) at Season’s
Hospice in Rochester.
Evelyn Grace Clancy was born on July 30, 1925,
to Henry and Anne (Lohaus) Uhlenkamp in Morgan,
Minn. She graduated from Morgan High School and
worked in Morgan for a short time. On April 20,
1946, Evie was united in marriage to Joseph L.
Clancy in Morgan. She was a homemaker most of
her life. The couple moved to Albert Lea in 1960
and Evie was employed at Andersen’s Fashions and
the Fountain Lake Treatment Center where she
later managed the bookstore. She enjoyed
gardening, flowers, and fishing, and especially
the time spent with her family and friends. Evie
was always willing to share her time and
talents.
Survivors include her sons, Gary and his wife,
Nancy Clancy, of Byron, and Patrick of Waterloo;
eight grandchildren, Sean, Chad, Erin, Ryan and
his wife, Keele, Michelle, Kelli, Shane, and
Katie; three great-grandchildren, Lexi, Devon,
and Lucas; very special friend, Bob Reichl of
Albert Lea; siblings, Loretta Jenniges, Jeannie
and her husband, Blondie Blomeke, Jim and his
wife, Jan Uhlen-kamp, and Nonnie and her husband
Jim Andre; and brother-in-law, Dale Kopischke.

Deann was a lifelong resident of Mason City. She
was born June 2, 1957, the daughter of Dale and
Dorothy (Dunahoo) Klunder. Deann’s greatest joy
in life was spending time with her family,
children, and especially her grandchildren.
Deann was an artist who enjoyed drawing and
painting. Some of Deann’s favorite interests and
leisure activities included taking drives,
camping, fishing, swimming, tanning, listening
to music, baking and decorating cakes.
Deann will be best remembered for taking pride
and diligent care in her relationships with her
family, friends and enjoyed being around people.
Those grateful for having had the privilege of
sharing in Deann’s life are her children, Nikole
(Jon) Benson of Mason City; two grandchildren,
Madison and Grace Benson; Chad Lutcavish of
Mason City; her parents, Royce (Dorothy) Hippen
of Mason City; her twin sister, Dawn (Gene)
Beller of Mason City; one niece, Natalie (Brett)
Wedeking of Mason City; three nephews, Matt
Klunder of Mason City; Adam Beller of Mason City

MASON CITY — Guy O. Hedrick, 76, of 503 S.

Guy was born August 21, 1927, in Arnolds Park,
Iowa, the son of Guy and Emma (Cook) Hedrick Sr.
He graduated from Arnolds Park High School in
1945. That same year he entered the U.S. Navy
where he received his boot camp training in San
Diego, Calif. He served aboard the USS LST No.
1019 during World War II and was discharged in
September of 1946. He would later serve in the
Korean Conflict aboard the USS Wisconsin and was
discharged in 1952. Following his discharge in
1946, Guy started working for Northwestern Bell
Telephone Company. He married Mary A. Lorge on
August 1, 1953, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Guy spent 33 years with Northwestern Bell in
several locations including Pocahontas, Newell,
Boone, Sioux City, Spencer and Mason City. He
retired from Northwestern Bell in 1980 as
district supervisor. Following retirement, he
started Hedrick Construction and Communications.
Guy was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, a former Mason City councilman, coached
Little League baseball and played slow- pitch
softball. He was very active at Newman having
received the “Friends of Newman” award in 1997
from the Newman Booster Club. He enjoyed
fishing, hunting, sports, especially Iowa State
University.
He and his wife, Mary, recently celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary.
Guy is survived by his wife, Mary A. Hedrick of
Mason City; son, Timothy J. Hedrick and wife,
Lisa, of Mason City; grandchildren, Lauren and
Taylor Hedrick; sister-in-law, Lorene Hedrick of
Sulphur, La., sister-in-law, Joan Koebele and
husband, Paul, of Marquette, Mich.,
sister-in-law, Mary Jo Lorge of Mason City, and
many nieces and nephews.

Robert Lorge; sisters-in-law, Anita Krejchi,

LORRAINE JONES
HAMPTON — Lorraine Jones, 86, of Hampton died
Friday (June 11, 2004) at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday
at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton
with the Rev. Jerry Miller presiding. Burial
will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from, 4 to 6 p.m. at
the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Lorraine was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Butler
County, Iowa, to Jake and Hattie (Knevel)
Wessels. She was raised in the Bristow area
where she graduated from Bristow High School.
She was married to Charles Jones on Nov. 18,
1944, in Hampton and spent much of her life as a
homemaker. In her younger years she work-ed for
the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company at the
switchboard.
Later in life, she worked with her husband,
Chuck, in the electrical business.
In high school she played softball. She enjoyed
gardening, canning every fall, fishing,
picnicking, camping and taking care of her cats.
She especially enjoyed activities with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a
member of the Hampton United Methodist Church.
Lorraine is survived by her husband, Charles, of
Hampton; daughter, Diana Harper, of Hampton;
son, Russell Jones, of Newton; granddaughters,
Tanya Harper, and her husband, John Rowe, of
Mason City, Lori, and her husband, Phil Rouge,
of Jones, Texas; grandsons, Tony Harper, of

LESTER WAYNE NEUBERGER
KLEMME — Lester Wayne Neuberger, age 82, of
Klemme, died Friday (June 11, 2004) at Oakwood
Care Center, Clear Lake, with his family at his
side.
Funeral services will be held Monday at the
Klemme United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. The
Rev. Pady Druhl will officiate. Burial will be
in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, with full
military honors by the Garner Military Honor
Guard.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at the
Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main,
Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the
service Monday at the church.

Lester Neuberger was born June 21, 1921, on a
farm east of Klemme, the son of Lewis and Sena
(Loger) Neuberger. He attended country school
and graduated from Klemme High School in 1939.
Following high school he went on to school where
he learned to be a machinist. He then was
employed for a time by Minneapolis Moline,
Hopkins, Minn., until the time he entered the
service.
On August 9, 1942, he was united in marriage to
Frances Schulz at the Klemme Methodist Church.
In January of 1943 he entered the United States
Army where he served in the European Theatre of
operations. He was stationed in southern England
until D-Day and then spent tenures in France,
Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He received many
decorations including the Good Conduct Medal,
five Bronze Stars, and the Middle Eastern
Theatre Ribbon. He was a part of the battles and
campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, and
Rhineland. Lester was honorably discharged Sept.
1, 1945.
On June 6, 1997, he was awarded the French
Freedom Medal and the Diploma of Liberation from
the Republic of France for the Battle of the
Bulge Campaign.
Lester was a long time member of the Garner VFW.
After completing his military service, Lester
and his wife, Frances, farmed for many years on
a farm east of Klemme. He was also employed at
Armour’s Meat Packing in Mason City as a
machinist for 20 years before retiring in 1974.
The couple moved into Klemme from the farm in
1986.
Lester was a lifetime member of the Klemme
United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful
husband, father, and grandfather who cherished
any activity or ocassion that involved times
spent with his family and friends. He was an
avid fisherman and had passed on the tricks and
skills of his favorite past time to his
grandchildren.
He looked forward to having his grandchildren
come to spend time on the farm where he could
teach them to drive lawnmowers and his pickup
truck on the country roads, and making sure they
learned to swim. They will remember him always
bringing treats for them and for his presence as
a proud grandpa and spectator as he followed
many of their activities.
Lester and Frances enjoyed dancing, traveling,
and the last 24 years wintering in Weslaco,
Texas. Lester loved to visit with friends and
looked forward to daily coffee sessions in
Klemme and Garner.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life
include his wife and partner of nearly 62 years,
Frances; daughter, Claudia; grandchildren, Kari
(Neuberger) Eidemiller, Kyle Neuberger, and
Aaron and Megan Opheim; great grandchildren
Tyler and Trevor Eidemiller; daughter-in-law,
Sinva (Neuberger) and husband, Randy Opheim; a
sister-in-law, Muriel Schulz; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sena
and Lewis; sons, Mark in 1975 and Franklin in
1988; brothers, Donald and Melvin; and sisters,
Lula, Pearl, and Cora.

for five years. She received her degree from
North Iowa Area Community College in 2003 and
was currently employed by Principal Financial.
In August of 2003 Maren was diagnosed with
cancer. Her two children, DeArzae and Autry,
inspired her, giving her the strength and
courage to battle her cancer. She was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Maren is survived by her two children, DeArzae
Smith and Autry Allen of Mason City; mother,
Kathryn L. Shaffer and husband, Larry, of

MASON CITY — James Everett “Blue Moon” Odom, 75,

James was a lifelong resident of Mason City. He
was born on December 7, 1928, to Everett and
Mildred (Loeckle) Odom in Mason City. James was
a graduate with the Class of 1947 at Mason City
High School.
On August 29, 1947, James was united in marriage
to Marilyn Pederson at the Pilot Knob Lutheran
Church, rural Ventura. To this union six
children were born. The couple farmed in the
Ventura area for several years. James later
worked for Deckers’ packing plant where he was
employed for 14 years.
On September 1, 1967, James married Luella
Vosburgh.
James owned and operated “Blue Moon’s” Bar in
Northwood and it was there that he was
affectionately known as “Blue Moon” by local
patrons and his friends. After selling his bar
business, James enjoyed buying houses and fixing
them up and selling them.
Some of Blue Moon’s interests and leisure
activities included traveling to Canada with
friends and fishing, taking road trips and
taking in the sites. James liked to search for
unusual roots and fungi; he would varnish them
and make decorative shelves and ornaments. James
took great pride in both sponsoring and playing
softball. He enjoyed meeting for coffee with
friends at Hy-Vee and McDonald’s.
“Blue Moon” will be best remembered for the
cherished time he spent with his family.

sharing in Jim’s life are his children, Michael

Margaret Irene (Stiles) Peterson was born Aug.
6, 1916, in Des Moines, the daughter of Melvin
Boyd and Margaret Pauline (Carmichael) Stiles.
She attended Oak Park Elementary School, Harding
Junior High, and graduated from North High
School.
She graduated from Drake University with
bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in
biology.
She had further education at the University of
Iowa; Iowa State University; the University of
Northern Iowa; the University of Michigan;
Colorado State University, and St. Lawrence
University.
She worked summers during her college years for
the Iowa State Tax Commission in Des Moines in
the State and Use Tax Division.
She was a teacher in several Iowa towns during
her 30 year teaching career: Graettinger,
Washington, Fort Dodge, and for 24 years in
Mason City, four years at Harding Elementary and
20 years at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC)
in the biology department.
Margaret married Harold S. Peterson of Fort
Dodge, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Des
Moines on July 17, 1945. They lived in Fort
Dodge two years, then moved to Mason City in
1947. They celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary there in 1995.
Margaret was active in her church, singing in
the choir, serving as organist and church school
teacher, as a member of St. Mary’s Guild, and a
Vestry member.
She was coordinator of the Brown Bag Bach series
of Lenten Organ recitals at St. John’s Church
for 10 years.
She was a long-time member of Matinee Musicale
Club, American Guild of Organists, Monday Study
Club, serving as president for each; and Alpha
Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority serving as
president and state music chairman.
She was a long time member of the North Iowa
Symphony Orchestra in which she played string
bass.
Margaret and Harold liked to travel, especially
in the United States and attended 13
Elderhostels in recent years. They also traveled
in Canada, Mexico, Austria, Germany and Great
Britain as well as Barbados, West Indies, where
her maternal grandparents were born and raised.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Margaret
Pauline (Polly) and son-in-law, Steven C. Sears,
of Des Moines; two grandsons, Craig S. Sears of
Woodward, Iowa and Paul R. Sears of Denver,
Colo.; sister, Barbara Kent and husband,
Millard, of Shoreview, Minn.; nieces, Ann Dobon
and husband, Miguel, of Coon Rapids, Minn.,
Susan and the Rev. Andris Sedlins, of Plymouth,
Minn., and Barbara Dewey and husband, Bill, of
Knoxville, Tenn.; four great-nieces; and two

WILLARD G. ‘BILL’ BECK
TUCSON, Ariz. — Willard G. Beck was born in
Mason City, Iowa, on March 7, 1925, to Loren
Nels Beck and Miriam Smith Beck, and died on
June 5, 2004 at the Casa de Luz in Tucson.
He served in the 13th Army Air Froce (The Jungle
Air Force) in the South Pacific from 1943 to
1945.
After returning from the war, he earned his
bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
Throughout his personal and professional life,
people looked to him for problem solving and
advice.
He had been an active member in his church and
was a devoted husband and father who instilled
his values by setting an example.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia
Remier Beck; sister, Marvyl Beck Patton;
daughters, Diane Beck Patton and husband, Cory,
Ginny Beck Beatty and Tyler George Beatty and
husband, Harvey, and Nancy Jean Beck;

Martin was a native of Churdan, Iowa. He was
born on Sept. 4, 1925, one of 11 children, to
John and Katherine “Collins” Monahan.
Martin was married to Evelyn Blanche Torkelson
in 1944 in Mason City. She preceded him in death
in October of 1983.
He later married Marilyn Dagel on Sept. 4, 1985,
in Mason City.
Martin was employed at Mercy Hospital and did
some trash hauling.
He then went to work at Armour Food in Mason
City and was a foreman of the hog kill division
until his illness forced his retirement.
He was a workaholic and enjoyed keeping busy
with his block long garden where he raised
flowers and vegetables with no weeds and worked
on the fishpond. Most of what he raised ended up
being given to friends and family.
In his spare time he cherished watching the
grandchildren at wrestling meets, attending
barrel horse races and fishing.
In his early years he was a boxer and bowler and
enjoyed working with wood and doing remodeling
projects. One of his favorite friends was his
dog, Melvin.
Those surviving are his wife, Marilyn, of Mason
City; nine children including his three
daughters, Kathy and husband Denny Birke, of
Jefferson, Ind; Anne and husband, Mark Billings,
of Clear Lake; Ellen and husband, Richard
Alexander, of Perkins, Okla.; six sons Dennis,
of LuVerne, Tom, of Elm Creek Neb., John and
wife, Janice, of Watertown, Minn., Ronald and
his fiancée, Bernice, of Kimmel, Ind., Brian, of
Louisville, Ky., and Kevin and his wife, Tammy,
of Ligonier, Ind; 25 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren. Also included in his life
are his five step-children, Connie and husband,
Wayne Wagner, of Woodland, Texas; Barbara

PAUL ALBERT JAMES
ALGONA — Paul Albert James was born March 8,
1915, in Lucas, Iowa, the son of Evertt Ray and
Della Kutsinger James. Della died when Paul was
about one year old.
He was cared for by his aunt, Fern James until
his father, E. Ray, as he was called, married
Frony Capitola Mains in 1919. Paul was the
oldest of seven children.
He started his schooling in Menlo, Iowa, and
continued in Stuart, Iowa, through the eighth
grade.
Because of The Great Depression, Paul had to
quit high school and leave home early. He worked
as a hired farm hand in southern Iowa and
traveled to northern Iowa looking for work.
It was in Algona that he found stable work and
met his wife, Nellie Steinman. They were married
on Jan. 11, 1939, in Boone, Iowa.
Paul entered the U.S. Army in May of 1945 and
was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
Paul owned a trucking line for 27 years and also
drove truck for Bituminous in Algona for 20
years.
He had been an Amway distributor since 1962 and
had a water softener business.
Paul was a member of the Presbyterian Church,
American Legion Hagg-Turner Post No. 90, the
Golden K Kiwanis Club and was very active at the
Senior Center in Algona.
He especially enjoyed gardening and playing
cribbage.
Paul died of respiratory complications following
pneumonia on Saturday (June 12, 2004) at the
Algona Good Samaritan Communities at the age of
89.
He is survived by his daughters, Beverly Soroka
and her husband, Alex, of Van Nuys, Calif., and
Evelyn James, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; one
grandson, Jamie Makuuchi and his wife,
Constance, and their two daughters, Kolby and
Blake of Mission Viejo, Calif. Also surviving
are two sisters, Luene Rue of Lakefield, Minn.,

HAMPTON — W. David Koerner, 71, of Hampton, died
Sunday (June 13, 2004) at the Franklin General
Hospital in Hampton.

Joshua Krisch officiating. Burial will be in the

W. David Koerner was born on June 5, 1933 in
Dubuque, the son of Walter and Perle (Bishop)
Koerner. He was a graduate of Dubuque High
School and the University of Iowa College of
Pharmacy in Iowa City.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Newland in
Batavia, Iowa on June 24, 1956.
After college, Dave worked in Vinton, Iowa, as a
pharmacist until 1957. He moved to Hampton where
he worked for Aagesen Drug. In 1959 he purchased
the pharmacy from the Aagesens. In 1973, Bruce
Whipple became partners with Dave. In 1995 he
sold his half of the business to Todd Wragge and
Wendal Speake. Dave continued to work part-time
for Koerner Whipple Pharmacy until he was unable
to do so.
He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in
Hampton.
He enjoyed woodworking. Dave’s passion was his
church and his family.
He very quietly enjoyed doing kind things for
other people.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Koener, of
Hampton; two sons, Seth and his wife, Susan
Koerner, of Beach Park, Ill., and Phillip
Koerner, of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Ann
Frandson and her husband, Steve, of Clive, Iowa;
grandchildren, Isaac, Rebecca, Garrett, Kristen,
Brenna and Nicole.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one
sister, Joan.

JOHN JOSEPH MARTI SR.
ALGONA — John Joseph Marti Sr. was born Jan. 7,
1930, in West Bend, Iowa, the son of Jacob and
Anna Manarch Marti.
He grew up in West Bend where he attended
school, graduating from West Bend High School in
1949.
After his schooling he worked on the farm before
entering the U. S. Air Force.
John returned to the area where he worked
construction.
On Sept. 25, 1957, John was united in marriage
to Cyrilla Schmidt at St. Cecelia Catholic
Church in Algona, Iowa. After their marriage the
couple lived in Algona.
John worked at Schultz Bros. for 33 years, then
worked some odd jobs before going to work for
Pinkerton as a security guard at Snap-On Tools
where he worked for 15 years retiring in
February of 2004.
John enjoyed spending time with his
grandchildren, fishing, gardening, puzzles,
watching the Minnesota Vikings and cracking
walnuts.
He was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church.
John died on Saturday (June 12, 2004) at his
home in Algona at the age of 74.
He is survived by his wife, Cyrilla, of Algona;
children, Paul and Brenda Marti, of Oklahoma
City, Okla.; Theresa and Rick Paulson, of
Armstrong; John Marti Jr., of Edgewood, Md;
Janet and Larry Nelson, of Manly; James Marti of
Irvington; Wendy and Mike Nelson, of Mason City;
Patrick Marti, of Irvington; Sarah and Damon
Pankey, of Algona; seven grandchildren, Michael,
Robert, Matthew, Harley, Emily, Garret and
Abigail. Also surviving are sisters, Anna
Bonnstetter, of Algona, and Susan Kisch, of West
Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two
brothers: Ernie, and Gene and an infant brother,
Fred; three sisters, Agnes, Mary and Bertha.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, with
Father Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be
in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at

LORRAINE JONES
HAMPTON — Lorraine Jones, 86, of Hampton passed
away on June 11, 2004, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at
the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with
the Rev. Jerry Miller presiding. Burial will be
in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Monday at the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
She was born on Nov. 21, 1917, in Butler County,
Iowa to Jake and Hattie (Knevel) Wessels. She
grew up in the Bristow area and graduated from
the Bristow High School.
She was married to Chuck Jones at the Methodist
Church Parsonage in Hampton on Nov. 18, 1944.
Lorraine started working in her younger years at
the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company at the
switchboard.
Later in life, she worked with her husband Chuck
in the electrical business as well as being a
homemaker.
She attended the Hampton United Methodist Church
in Hampton, Iowa. She enjoyed playing softball,
racing go-carts and was a 4-H leader in her
younger years.
Lorraine enjoyed gardening, canning every fall
for family, friends and neighbors, fishing,
picnicking, camping and taking care of her cats.
She especially loved to do activities with her
grandchildren and great grandchildren. For
years, Lorraine cut out and collected news
clippings, recipes and family memorabilia,
including her own personal thoughts about that
particular event, to be passed on to her
children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Jones,
of Hampton; daughter, Diana Harper, of Hampton;
son, Russell Jones, of Newton;
granddaughter,Tanya Harper Rowe and husband,
John, of Mason City; grandson, Tony Harper, of
Hampton, granddaughter, Lori and husband, Phil
Rouge Jones, of Texas, grandson, Steven and
wife, Laura Jones of Newton; sister, Marge and
husband, Don Schemmel of Cedar Falls; brother,
Jakie and wife, Flavia Wessels, of Dumont; and
seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and
one brother, Don Wessels, of Seattle, Wash.
