SHIRLEY A. (SUBY) HALL
MASON CITY — Shirley A. (Suby) Hall, 69 of Mason
City, died Sunday (May 30, 2004) at Good
Shepherd Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday at the Good Shepherd Health Center
Chapel, 302 Second St. N.E., with the Rev. Kris
L. Snyder, of Grace Lutheran Church of
Hanlontown, officiating. Interment will be in
Brush Point Cemetery in Hanlontown.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the
Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania
Ave., and one hour prior to the service at Good
Shepherd Health Center Chapel.
Memorials may be given to the Shirley A. (Suby)
Hall Memorial Fund.
Shirley Ann (Suby) Hall, the daughter of Morris
and Myrtle (Clark) Suby was born Dec. 5, 1934.
She attended school in Hanlontown and graduated
in 1954. Her life was a triumph over terrific
obstacles. When she was 11 years old and in
sixth grade she was stricken by polio and
totally paralyzed.
She was then a patient at University Hospitals
in Iowa City for more than a year and a half.
She began to recover slowly and was brought home
to her family.
For the next two summers she returned to
University Hospitals for continuing surgeries.
Each time she spent the summer months with much
of her body encased in a rigid cast.
She was unable to attend school for three years.
When she was ready to resume her studies the
school system installed a “teach-a-phone” system
for her.
She was often assisted to school by her mother,
or her brother James. On snowy days one of them
would pull her to school on a sled.
When graduation day came she was able to walk
down the aisle with her classmates — a very
proud day for Shirley.
Her mother was very devoted to helping Shirley
face her many challenges in life. She was
determined that polio would not destroy her
daughter’s strong will and determination to live
a normal life.
Shirley attended the Easter Seals Center in
Mason City for many years. She also attended
Camp Sunnyside for 25 years.
She also kept busy selling stationary and cards,
Blair, Avon, crafts and paintings. She would
paint holding the paintbrush in her mouth.
Shirley lived at home until 1973 when she moved
to Handicap Village, where she was elected
mayor.
In 1975, she moved to Rest Haven and then in
September 1976, she became a resident of Good
Shepherd Health Center.
She became very well known to everyone in the
Mason City area when she received her “wheels”
(electric wheelchair) and was then able to get
around on her own. She often referred to her
wheelchair as her “Cadillac.” She was an
activist for the handicapped and was often on
the news or in the newspaper promoting handicap
awareness.
On June 5, 1999, she was united in marriage to
the late Donald (Gene) Hall at Good Shepherd.
Their wedding celebration was televised on the
evening news.
Shirley was a resident of Good Shepherd Health
Center for 28 years. Many of the staff and
residents there became family to Shirley.
Her smile, strong will and destermination will
never be forgotten by her family and friends.
She is survived by her brother, Marlin Suby and
wife Mindy, of Madison, Wis.; sisters, Darlene
Hammitt and husband, Dan, of Garner, and Barbara
Niles of Dodge Center, Minn.; and many nieces
and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
Also surviving is her loving friend Marilyn
Nauman who was like a sister to Shirley.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Don;
parents; brother, James; brother-in-law, Randy
Niles; and nephews, Jeffrey David Suby-Brass and
Robert Morris Suby.

LILLIAN MARIE CHIZEK
BRITT — Lillian Marie (Kopacek) Chizek, 95, of
Britt, passed away Saturday (May 29, 2004) at
Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. At
her death, as throughout her life, surrounded by
her loving family and friends.
A funeral Mass for Lillian Chizek will be held
10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Jerry
Blake and the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating.
Burial will take place in the St. John’s
Catholic Cemetery in Duncan, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today
at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W.
in Britt, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. There
will be additional visitation one hour prior to
services at the church.
Lillian, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth
Kudej Kopacek was born April 10, 1909, in Britt.
She was united in marriage with William Albert
Chizek on Jan. 15, 1929.
Her 95 years were recently celebrated at the
Britt Country Club. Her well-wishers reached
into the hundreds and she received more than 150
birthday cards.
Mrs. Chizek cherished the farm where she and her
husband Bill raised their children, beginning
the family legacy that was her main source of
joy.
She was an exceptional gardener and baker.
Mrs. Chizek enjoyed making baby quilts and
afghans, which she gave to her family members
and friends.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Chizek was the
oldest member of the St. Patrick’s Parish in
Britt where she had lovingly cared for the
church sanctuary and altar linens for many
years. She generously shared her gifts of faith
and sense of humor, providing strength and
wisdom through grief, troubled times and joyous
occasions.
She is survived by one son, William F. Chizek
and his wife, Blanche, of Britt; one daughter,
Marie Wieck and her husband, Gary, of Clear
Lake; one son-in-law, Francis Arndorfer of
Willmar, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Lorraine
Chizek of Britt; 24 grandchildren; 61
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
four sisters: Marie Brcka of Britt, Vivian
Formanek, of Britt, Agnes Rayhons, of Garner,
and Blanche Paca of Britt; one brother, Vincent
Kopacek and his wife, Rose, of Britt; and
numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
husband William, son Arthur, daughter Lorene
Arndorfer, granddaughter, Barbara Sue Williams,
great-granddaughter, Ashley Chizek; three
sisters: Helen Kopacek, Evelyn Kopacek and
Mildred Wellik; and three brothers: Arnold,
Francis and Raymond Kopacek.

SUSAN ELAINE THON
CARVER, Minn. — Susan Elaine Thon, 53, of
Carver, Minn., passed away on May 29, 2004.
Susie’s battle with cancer was courageous and
she was an inspiration to all with whom she came
into contact.
Susan Elaine Thon was born May 15, 1951, to
Palmer and Dorothy (Ulve) Leegaard.
She was united in marriage to George Thon, on
Aug. 16, 2003, at their home in Carver.
She was a work release case worker for the
Department of Corrections.
She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Leegaard,
of Lake Mills, Iowa; husband, George Thon, of
Carver, Minn.; sisters, Sandra (John) Elwod, of
Jordan, Minn., and Diane (Bill) Clark, of Lake
Mills; daughter, Angie (Ken) Sink, of Belle

MASON CITY — Helen D. Beck, 93, of Mason City
died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday
at the First Congregational United Church of
Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Samuel
Hamilton-Poore officiating. A private family
interment was held in Elmwood-St. Joseph
Cemetery.
Memorials for Helen may be given to the First
Congregational United Church of Christ.
Helen D. DeSart was born June 2, 1910, the
daughter of Dr. Roy F. and Ester S. (Churchill)
DeSart in Des Moines, Iowa.
She graduated from Mason City High School and
attended Mason City Junior College.
Helen was united in marriage to J. F. Beck on
June 18, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa. She and her
husband were lifelong residents of Mason City.
Her husband, J. F. Beck died on Feb.1, 1966.
Helen was active in Women’s Club, Opportunity
Village, a 65-year member of PEO Chapter DZ, and
a trustee of Julia M. Higley Home.
Helen was a devoted member of First
Congregational United Church of Christ.
Those left to cherish her memory are her
daughter, Janan Beck, of Clear Lake; son, Jay
Beck, of Mason City and sister-in-law, Ruth
DeSart of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband J. F. Beck; three brothers, Francis,

CHESTER ROUNDS
MASON CITY — Chester Rounds, 82, of Mason City,
died Saturday (May 29, 2004) at the USA
Healthcare Center in Mason City.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.
Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with
the Rev. Bill Poland of Wesley United Methodist
Church, officiating. Interment will follow at
Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time
of services on Thursday at the funeral chapel.
Chester was born Oct. 4, 1921 in Menahga, Minn.
He graduated from Hampton High School and then
served in the United States Army during World
War II, from January 1943 until October 1945.
After his honorable discharge, Chester worked as
a welder for Case Tractor Co in Bettendorf for
many years.
He was united in marriage to Genevieve Wright in
1965 in Mason City and instantly became a father
and grandfather to a large extended family.
After his retirement, Chester spent time in his
motor home, wintering in Arizona and summering
at the home of his son in Rockford, Ill. He was
baptized in 1991 at Wesley United Methodist
Church, Mason City.
Chester is survived by five children, Donald
Weichert and his wife, Judy, and Diane Irions
and her husband, Jim, all of Rockford, Ill.,
Leland Weichert and his special friend, Deborah,
of Virginia, and Darrell Weichert and Richard
Walker, both of Rockford, Ill.; 14
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by seven brothers and
sisters, Ralph Rounds and his wife, Eunice,
Dorothy Williams of Clear Lake, Ethel Williams
of Iowa Falls, Ilene Garnsey of Morning Sun,
Iowa, Wayne Rounds and his wife, Pat, Joan King
of Balaton, Minn., and Virgil Rounds and his
wife, Christy, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a
brother-in-law, Harlan Johnson, of Mason City.

HELEN G. DESART
MASON CITY — Helen G. DeSart, 93, of 302 Second
St. N.E., formerly of 36 Beaumont Drive, died
Monday (May 17, 2004) at the Good Shepherd
Health Center.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201
Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Terry
Hamilton-Poore officiating. Private inurnment
will take place in Elmwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian
Church, Hospice of North Iowa or donor’s choice.
Helen was born July 11, 1910 in Mason City to
Herman L. and Ada Stella (Bergen) Green.
She graduated from Mason City High School and
attended Mason City Junior College and Grinnell
College. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls.
Helen married Chester R. DeSart Dec. 29, 1938,
in Mason City.
She delighted in giving hundreds of children
their first educational experience, teaching
kindergarten in the Mason City School District
for 25 years, retiring in 1975.
She was the longest living member of the First
Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday
school and served as an elder and deacon.
She was also a member of PEO Chapter KX,
Phoenician Club and Retired School Personnel.
She was a Girl Scout leader, North Iowa Band
Festival hostess and was active in the Community
Theatre.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Judith
Rosseth and husband, Robert H., of New Bern,
N.C., and Antoinette Saul and husband, William
G., of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; grandchildren,
Bryan T. Monroe and wife, Wendy, of Austin,
Texas, Jason A. Monroe and wife, Jennifer, of
Des Moines, Lynn M. Rosseth of Annandale, Va.,
Jane A. Rosseth of Los Angeles;
great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Hayden and
Garrison Monroe of Austin, Texas, and Max Monroe
of Des Moines; a brother, Dr. Robert W. Green
and wife, Ellinor, of Flagstaff, Ariz.;
sister-in-law, Ruth DeSart of Mason City; and
four nieces and six nephews, including Susan
Borcherding and Jan and Jay Beck from the Mason
City area.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a
sister in infancy; her husband, Chester R.
DeSart; two sisters, Marjorie Ferguson and Betty
Gibson, and a sister-in-law, Helen Beck.

J. DUANE HEBERT
CHARLES CITY — J. Duane Hebert, 78, of 1790
Quarry Road, Charles City, died Monday (May 31,
2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in
Charles City.
A funeral Mass for James Duane Hebert will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church,in Charles City with
the Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, celebrating the
Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There
will be a flag presentation by the Charles City
Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at
the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in
Charles City. The rosary will be recited at 4:30
p.m. with a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7
p.m. followed by a Rosary led by the Knights of
Columbus. Visitation will continue at the church
an hour prior to the Mass.
James Duane Hebert was born Nov. 27, 1925, in
Aurora, Kan., the son of Meddie and Blanche
(Dandurand) Hebert.
He graduated from Aurora High School in 1944,
moved to Charles City with his family, then
enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1945. He served
in the Medical Corps and was honorably
discharged in 1946.
He then attended Loras College in Dubuque, where
he received his B.A. in English and Spanish.
He was employed by International Harvester in
the Mason City district office.
He was married to Cleo (Staudt) on Dec. 1, 1951,
and in 1953, he and his wife established a home
and farming business near Charles City.
In 1963, he began his teaching career at
Immaculate Conception High School teaching
Spanish and English, and continued teaching
English at Rockford Senior High School.
Upon completion of his M.A. in guidance and
counseling at University of Northern Iowa, he
was employed as a counselor with the Charles
City Community School District. He retired in
1989 after 30 years of work in the education
field.
James Duane Hebert was a member of the National
Education Association, the Iowa State Education
Association and the Charles City Education
Association.
He was a member of the Elks, the American
Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the Farm
Bureau, and was an active member of the
Democratic Party.
Also involved in church work, he served on the
Dubuque Archdiocese School Board for six years
and was an active member of the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, serving on the
parish council and building committee, and
serving as a CCD teacher for many years. He was
an avid reader and sports fan, and loved time
with his family at Lake Okoboji.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cleo
(Staudt); his children, Julie Horton, of
Missoula, Mont., Mary Ellen (William) Staebler,
of Columbus, Ohio, Robert, of Bloomington,
Minn., and Patrice Hebert, of Rochester, Minn.
He has one granddaughter, Bristol Horton, of
Missoula, Mont.
His siblings who survive him are Armand, of
Eureka, Calif., Maxine Kollman, of Iowa City,
Bernadine Monaghan, of Elma, Feriel (Madlyn),
Del Ray Beach, Fla., Clara Hebert, of St. Paul,
Minn., James Renae (Ellie), of Marion, Marvin
(Gloria), Maple Grove, Minn., and
sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hebert Baldwin, of
Charles City, Ellen O’Connell, of Chicago, and a
brother-in-law, Leo (Barbara) Staudt, of Charles
City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a
brother, Eddie Hebert; four brothers-in-law and
two sisters-in-law.

June was born May 15, 1921, in Osage, Iowa, the
daughter of Alvin and Olava M. (Lindley) Koch.
She attended school in Osage, then moved to
Mason City in 1940.
June married Edward Horstman Feb. 14, 1944, in
Rockwell.
She farmed with her husband in Rockwell, New
Haven and Nora Springs before returning to Mason
City in 1989.
June was a member of Holy Family Catholic
Church, Women’s Club, Card Club, RSVP,
volunteered at the Discovery Shop, enjoyed
sewing and traveling, and was an avid gardener.
June and husband Edward wintered in Arizona for
many years and she loved spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
June is survived by her two children, Loni
Siefken and husband, Jerry, of Rudd, and Larry
Horstman and wife Janet of Nora Springs; five
grandchildren, Lane Siefken and wife, Denise;
April Horstman Reser and husband, Dusty; Lance
Siefken and wife, Dawn; Tamara H. Murray and
husband, Jerry, and Kevin J. Horstman, and six
great-grandchildren, Zachary, Cody, Mackenzie,

OSAGE — Hans Hveem, 91, of Osage, died Monday
(May 31, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional
Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.
Hans was born May 11, 1913, near Wolf Point,
Mont., the son of Nels and Julia (Rosie) Hveem.
Hans was united in marriage to Joyce Paulson on
June 4, 1939, in Osage.
Hans started farming in Cedar Township, Mitchell
County, later moving to the family farm six
miles north of Osage, retiring and moving to
Osage in 1981.
In addition to his farming, he did custom
combining, corn shelling and trucking in the
surrounding area.
Hans was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church.
He enjoyed watching TV, sports and fishing.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev.
Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be in
the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the

Cynthia was born Dec. 30, 1959, in Osage, Iowa,

Cynthia attended the LeRoy, Minn., schools and
graduated from high school in 1978.
She continued her education at the Faribault
Technical School of Nursing and received her LVN
degree.
She worked in Houston, Texas, for four years and
then moved to El Paso and continued her
education and received her R.N. degree.
She worked nine years in a burn unit, then moved
to Harlingen and continued her work as a
critical care nurse.
She loved being out doors, fishing and hunting.
Her greatest love was for her family, watching
her nieces and nephews grow up.
Cynthia was preceded in death by her beloved
brother, Robert.
Those left to remember her are her parents,
Merlyn and Luanna; brothers, Thomas and wife,
Judy; Mark and wife, Cindy; Jeffrey; Bradley and
wife, Sheila; sister, Susan Schumann and
husband, Kim, and sister-in-law, Bonnie. Nieces
and nephews are Jennifer, Amber, Martin, Dylan,
Lucas, Rebecca, Joshua, Amanda and Nathan, and
great-nieces and nephews, Jacob, Aubrey and
Kaitlyn.
She will be sadly missed by her family and
friends.

CLEAR LAKE — Opal Balmat Duesenberg, 96, of
Clear Lake, died Monday (May 31, 2004) at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
A private graveside service will be held at the
Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

or Opportunity Village.
Opal was born March 9, 1908, in Mason City, the
daughter of O.T. and Millie (Noah) Balmat. The
family moved to Clear Lake in 1923.
She attended Clear Lake High School and was a
member of the basketball team. She graduated in
1926.
She graduated from Hamilton Business College six
months later.
Opal married Edgar M. Duesenberg from Garner on
Dec. 31, 1927, in Clear Lake.
After 10 years of living different places, they
moved back to Clear Lake in 1937, where she had
since resided.
She and her husband were charter members of the
Clear Lake Christian Church, where she was
treasurer for many years.
They were co-owners and founders of the highway
construction firm of E.M. Duesenberg Inc. in
1935.
Opal was on the Girl Scout Council and involved
in many civic, school and social activities. She
was interested in both indoor and outdoor
sports, both as participant and spectator.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband;
parents; brother, Wayne; one grandson, Kirk
Duesenberg, and son-in-law, Holmes Pedelty.
She is survived by two sons, Arlen and wife,
Maxigene, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and
Richard and wife, Eunice, of Clear Lake;
daughter, Jane Pedelty of Edina, Minn., and 13
grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

ST. ANSGAR — Norman Eugene Loe, 72, of St.
Ansgar, died Saturday (May 29, 2004) at the
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating.

Norman Eugene Loe, son of Ernest and Emma
Danielson Loe, was born Aug. 21, 1931, in
Spencer.
He was baptized on Sept. 13, 1931, and confirmed
on April 14, 1946, at the Lincoln Lutheran
Church in Royal, Iowa.
His childhood years were spent in Royal, where
he received his education and graduated from
Royal High School in 1949.
Norman married Rachel Hadenfeldt on July 27,
1958, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. They lived in the
Royal/Milford area until moving to Ventura,
Iowa, in 1974.
Norman was a professional driver and worked most
of his career for Ruan Transport Inc.
He was very pleased to have received his 1
Million Mile Safe Driving Award from Ruan.
When Norman retired in 1990, he and Rachel moved
to the St. Paul, Minn., area to be closer to
Melissa and her family.
The year 2002 saw a final move to St. Ansgar,
Iowa, following Byron and Melissa to his new
call at Immanuel Lutheran.
Everywhere Norm lived, he was involved with his
local congregation, serving on various boards.
He also enjoyed sharing his musical talent in
the choirs and as a soloist.
He was always active in his community, enjoying
his work with the Lions, town activities and
celebrations.
As an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and
fishing, he shared his knowledge by teaching
classes to children throughout the years.
Norm ws a member of the National Rifle
Association (NRA) and was proud to have attained
standing as a Millennium Endowment Member.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an
infant brother, aunts, uncles and an infant
nephew.
He is survived by wife, Rachel, of St. Ansgar;
daughter, Alison Loe, of Arkansas and her
daughters, Amy and Megan Loe; and two
great-grandchildren; daughter, Melissa and her
husband, the Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick of St.
Ansgar and their children, Andrew and Erica
Northwick; sister, Linnea, and her husband, Dick

BERNARD ‘BARNEY’ THILGES

“Barney” Thilges, 87, of Bode, will be

Bernard Thilges, the son of Nicholas and
Margaret (Zeller) Thilges, was born Oct. 23,
1916, in Bode, Iowa. He attended parochial
school in St. Joe and then farmed from the age
of 12 years.
Over the years, he was also a Pioneer sales
representative, a custom herbicide applicator
and a school bus driver.
He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church, where he served many years as usher and
Eucharistic minister.
Barney also served as the church bell ringer for
every weekend Mass and every funeral service for
35 years.
He was a longtime member of the Knights of
Columbus and was one of the originators of the
Mulligan Stew, which began as means to support
the St. Joe baseball team coached by Barney.
The first Mulligan Stew was held on the Thilges
farm and has now grown into a popular annual
tradition on the parish grounds.
He was a 4-H leader for more than 50 years and
was installed into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 1981.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Algona
Noon Kiwanis Club and the Riverdale Community
ASC, and served as the Riverdale Township Clerk
and Trustee as well as on the Extension Council.
He was a volunteer youth football, basketball
and baseball coach for 25 years and an avid
Bishop Garrigan Booster Club member for 45
years, serving in ticket sales all of that time
and as a gate worker for 42 years of games.
Barney Thilges passed from this life on Sunday
(May 30, 2004) at the Kossuth Regional Health
Center in Algona.
He is survived by one brother, Jake, and his
wife, Wanda, of Bode; three sisters, Marcella
Smith, of Algona, Martha Kayser, of Ottosen, and
Mary Gappa, of Ayrshire, and a number of nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five

TITONKA — Funeral services for Gerrit DeWaard,

Gerrit DeWaard was born on March 29, 1918, in
Phillips County, Kan., to John and Lyda Vreeman
DeWaard. Gerrit was baptized at Luctor, Kan.
At the age of 3, Gerrit came with his family to
Iowa and settled in the Kanawha area.
He received his education in the rural school
system near Kanawha and Wesley.
After the service, he worked for Helm Hardware
in Woden as a plumber and electrician.
In 1948, Gerrit started farming the home place
near Woden.
He was married to Grace Looft on Feb. 6, 1951,
at Algona, Iowa. The couple continued farming
between Woden and Titonka. Gerrit’s wife, Grace,
preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1992.
On Oct. 16, 1993, Gerrit was married to Wilma
Van Hove Wubben at Independence, Iowa. The
couple continued living in Titonka.
Gerrit was a lifelong member of the Woden
Christian Reformed Church, where he professed
his faith. He greatly loved his Lord, church and
family. He served on the church board, serving
as elder and deacon.
He was on the elevator board, the Titonka Care
Center board for many years and telephone board,
where he was recently awarded a plaque for 30
years of service, most of that time serving as
president of the board.
Gerrit loved to travel and almost made it around
the world. He was a very special uncle to his
many nieces and nephews.
Gerrit died on Monday (May 31, 2004) at the
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City at
the age of 86.
Gerrit is survived by his wife, Wilma, of
Titonka, and his stepson, Douglas Wubben and his
wife, Christa, of Independence; also surviving
are four step-grandchildren, Tanya Greiner and
husband, John, Samantha, Jared and Erica Wubben;
two brothers, Jacob DeWaard and wife, Lorraine,
of Titonka, and Henry J. DeWaard and wife,
Josephine, of Kanawha; two sisters, Elsie
Miller, of Britt, and Sereina Holleman, of
Hancock, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth DeWaard,
of Woden, and Johnette Kahl, of Oregon City,
Ore.; one brother-in-law, John Kahl, of Oregon
City, Ore., and many nieces and nephews.

John worked at Armour Foods, retiring after 35 ½
years of service. He served for 20 years in the
Army National Guard and also farmed for many
years.
He married Donna L. Belseth on Sept. 4, 1949, at
Mason City. He was a life-long member of
Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed golfing, gardening, camping and
especially family picnics and gatherings.
John is survived by his wife, Donna Eberhardt,
of Mason City; three daughters, Debbie and her
husband, Tom Lincoln, of Clear Lake; Jo Ellen
and her husband, Charles Younke, of Mason City;
and Marsha and her husband, Mark Koerber, of
Mason City; a son, Bryan Eberhardt, and his

BELMOND — Bernice L. (Ellingston) Nelson, 81, a
resident of Belmond, died Tuesday (June 1, 2004)
with her husband at her side at her home in
Belmond of complications resulting from
pulmonary fibrosis and asthma.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at St. Olaf Church west of Belmond with
the Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Burial
will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the
Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E.
in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to
the services Friday at the church.

Bernice Ellingston, the daughter of Elling and
Nettie (Ulstad) Ellingston, was born April 18,
1923, on her parents’ farm in Wright County west
of Belmond, the fourth of seven children.
She was baptized in June of 1923 and confirmed
on July 3, 1938, at the St. Olaf Lutheran
Church.
She attended and graduated from Belmond High
School and later received a degree from Mason
City Junior College. Bernice then went on to
complete her bachelor of science degree at Drake
University.
Following her education, she taught for 32 years
at the fifth-sixth-grade levels in rural
schools, and Kanawha and Clarion schools. Most
of her teaching was in the area of Spanish and
social studies classes. She was also a lifelong
homemaker, devoted spouse, mother, grandmother
and sister.
Bernice was united in marriage to Robert V.
Nelson on April 25, 1942 by the Rev. Severseike
at the Lutheran parsonage in Belmond. Their
union was blessed with two sons, Robert Douglas,
and an infant son, Mark Alan, who passed away at
the age of 1 1/2 days.
Throughout most of her life, Bernice had been
actively involved in serving her churches and
her Lord. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church
in Belmond, she had taught Sunday School and
Vacation Bible School, and served on the Board
of Education.
In later years at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she
was active in Bible study groups.
Bernice was very much a family person who
received great joy from the accomplishments of
her family.
She loved to raise a garden and flowers, sewing,
was an avid reader, and enjoyed the
companionship of her dogs.
Those left to cherish the memory of her life
include her husband and partner in life of more
than 62 years, Robert V. Nelson, of Belmond;
son, Robert, and wife, Charlene Nelson, of
Belmond; a granddaughter Marietta, and husband,
Brad Bittle, and their children, Ian Bradford,

Mary Luella Petersen was born Aug. 24, 1924, in
Dougherty. She was one of two children born to
Leo E. and Cecelia R. (Dougherty) Geary.
Mary attended and graduated from Dougherty High
School and furthered her education at St. Joseph
Mercy Nursing School in Mason City.
On March 9, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to
Willard F. “Bill” Petersen in Des Moines. The
couple be-came the proud parents of six
children.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church and the Women’s Guild in Rockwell, and
the Linn Grove Country Club Women’s League.
As a lifelong resident in the Dougherty and
Rockwell area, Mary will be well-remembered as a
woman who was very caring, kind and devoted to
her faith. She took great pride in nurturing her
children and grandchildren.
Some of Mary’s favorite leisure activities and
interests included spending time with her family
and friends, baking pies, golfing and solving
crossword puzzles.
Mary will be missed dearly by her family and
friends who have shared in her life.
She is survived by her children, Gregory
Petersen and his wife, Teri, of Mason City; Gary
Petersen and his wife, Patti, of Rockwell; Rondi
Staley and her husband, Carroll, of Cypress,
Texas; Daina Pitzenberger and her husband, Ron,
of Tomball, Texas; Beth Schmitt and her husband,
Leroy, of Rockwell, and Dennis Petersen and his
wife, Joni, of Aitkin, Minn. Mary will also be
sadly missed by her brother, Dick Geary, and his
wife, Ruthie, of Mason City; 19 grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren, and many other
relatives and friends.

Willard “Bill” Petersen in 1991; her parents,
Leo and Cecelia Geary, and two nieces.

Dolores Bertha Reuter, the daughter of John and
Cecelia (Pint) Reuter, was born Aug. 4, 1932, at
Mason City.
She attended St. Joseph Catholic School,
graduating in 1950.
After graduation, she began working in the
bookkeeping department at St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital. She later was the office manager for
the Internal Medicine Associates and then Mason
City Clinics, retiring in 1995.
After her retirement, she volunteered for the
Mercy Auxiliary, receiving her 1,500-hour pin in
May 2003.
She served on the Mercy Auxiliary Board for six
years, two years as treasurer of the board, and
spent four years as the gift shop chairwoman.
She also volunteered for Mended Hearts.
She was a very strong supporter of the Newman
Booster Club, a member of the St. Joseph
Catholic Church and the St. Francis Circle of
St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She loved traveling. Her most memorable trips
included trips to Ireland and Alaska, and to see
her family wherever they were.
Dolores was very active in her nieces’ and
nephews’ lives.
Dolores is survived by one brother, Vincent
Reuter, and his wife, Claire, of Tempe, Ariz.;
sisters, Marguerite Johnson of Johnston, Joanne
Coyle and her husband, Vincent, of Deadwood,
S.D., and Marlene Reuter of Glenwood, Ariz.; one
sister-in-law, Mary Reuter, of Mason City; 12
nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and
great-nephews. Also surviving is her aunt and
godmother, Bertha Mineart, of Gilbertville,
Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
brother, Wilfred “Mike” Reuter; an infant
sister, Rosemary, and sister Marilyn Young.

Tuesday (June 1, 2004) at University Hospital in
Iowa City.

James Frederick Birum was born on Dec. 14, 1945,
in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Stephen George and
Edna Louise (Ahntholz) Birum. He lived with his
parents and sister on a farm near Albert City
until he moved to Osage when he was 10 years
old.
As a freshman in 1960 in Sioux City, Iowa, he
played football for Sioux City East.
He returned to Osage in 1962, where he wrestled
and played football for the Osage Green Devils.
Jim was elected homecoming king in the fall of
1963, and graduated from Osage High School in
1964.
Jim worked for Holden farms in Manly for more
than 30 years.
His passions in life were gardening, fishing and
a love of wind chimes, animals, nature and
antiques. He was also an avid fan of B.B. King.
Grateful for having shared his life are his best
friend and soulmate, Barbara Figgens, who cared
for him unceasingly; her children, Jacob and
Elissa; his sister, Susan Telkamp of Elkton,
S.D.; his niece, Jacqueline (Duane) Amundson and
children, Edwin, Samuel and Lucas of Ivanhoe,
Minn. Survivors also include a half-sister,
Barbara (A.C.) Soukup of Georgetown, Texas, and
several cousins.

Garth, died Friday (May 28, 2004) at his home in
Stone Mountain, Ga.
He was born July 20, 1932, in Webster City. He
attended Swaledale Schools and graduated from
Swaledale High School.
He graduated from the University of Iowa with a
degree in accounting.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to
1954.
He enjoyed living and working in the Miami,
Fla., area until his retirement. He then moved
to Stone Mountain, Ga., in 1995.
He is survived by one sister, Helen Lee and her
husband, Robert, of Mason City; one brother,
Frank Garth and his wife, Jan, of Engelwood,
Fla.; one nephew, Jon Lee; and four nieces,
Janice Wolters, Nancy Wilder, and Cindy Lee, all
of Mason City, and Mary Anderson, of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James
and Hulda Garth; one sister, Joan Johnson, and
two nieces, Cathy Lee and Joan Lee.

BELMOND — Sanford “Sammy” G. Severson, 91, a
resident of Belmond, died Wednesday (June 2,
2004) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday
at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, west of
Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson
officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond
Cemetery.

in Belmond, and continues one hour prior to the
service on Saturday at the church.

Sanford G. Severson was born in Humboldt County,
Iowa, Jan. 9, 1913, the son of Knut and Alma
(Gunderson) Severson. He was baptized in the
Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.
When he was 6 years old he moved with his
parents to the Belmond-Clarion area and attended
rural school, Belmond No. 9.
He was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and
was a lifetime member there.
On Dec. 31, 1935, he was united in marriage to
Lillian Haugen at Northwood. To this union a son
Larry was born.
Following their marriage the couple farmed in
the Belmond-Clarion area until their retirement
in January 1976, when they moved to the town of
Belmond.
Sanford was a director for Belmond No. 9 Country
School and had served as a deacon and trustee of
St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
He had been involved with the Luther League,
served as an usher at the church and filled
various other roles.
Sammy had served on the Belmond Community
Apartments Board and was instrumental in helping
organize the Over 60 Club.
He was a volunteer Care Car Driver, delivered
Meals on Wheels, served on the Belmond Creamery
Board, and was active in the Sons of Norway
Lodge in Mason City.
Sanford and Lillian had traveled to Norway,
Arizona, and Hawaii.
They enjoyed card parties and dancing at the
Surf Ballroom in earlier years.
Sammy was a devoted caregiver to his wife during
her failing health.
He looked forward to a competitive game of cards
with his grandson, Scott, and coffeeing with his
friends.
He was a man who loved the farm and helped out
with his son Larry’s farm work up to the very
time of his illness.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life
include his son, Larry, and wife, Carol
Severson, of Belmond; and grandson, Scott
Severson and his fiancee, Missy Jeffers, of
Belmond; two sisters, Kathryn Christenson, of
Belmond and Elaine Lenz, of Mason City; and one
brother, Kenneth P. Severson, of Clarion.

Lillian in 2003; and three sisters, Myrtle,
Leila, and Betty.

Walter Henry Albert Eggers was born Nov. 29,
1907, in Hubbard, Iowa, the son of Herman and
Lena (Jague) Eggers.
On Feb. 16, 1929, Walter was united in marriage
to Ethel “Peggy” Pettey in Mason City.
Walter resided in Mason City until the late
1960s, when he moved to Charles City.
Walter worked for the railroad, Decker
meatpacking, the Northwestern Cement Plant,
Coniver & Doyle Egg Factory, and most recently
at Ray’s Pastime in Charles City.
Walter raised birds and always enjoyed visiting
with people, especially his family.
Walter is survived and lovingly remembered by
his son, Charles “Buddy” Eggers of Mason City;
his sister, Marie Michaelson of Kanawha; as well
as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; a
son, three brothers, three sisters and a
great-great-grandchild.

Hospital in Cedar Rapids for 28 years.
She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist
Church.

Jack graduated from Mason City High School. Jack

7, 1955. He was then honorably discharged Jan.
18, 1960.
Jack enjoyed fill-in word puzzles. His greatest
enjoyment was getting together with his family
for reunions and the holidays.
John is survived by his long time companion,
Virginia Rush, of Mason City; his two daughters,

Minneapolis, Minn., and Diane Ross and her

Leonard, was born Sept. 19, 1909, in Waukee.
She received her education in the Waukee school
system and graduated from Waukee High School.
Following graduation, she moved to Garner, where
she helped her stepsister and her husband. She
later moved to Britt.
On Nov. 2, 1930, she was united in marriage with
Elmer Wallen in Garner. The couple made their
home in Britt, where Dorothy was employed doing
sewing and alterations. She also made countless
numbers of baby sweaters.
Dorothy was a very active member of the Britt
Congregational United Church of Christ. She
later moved her membership to the Britt United
Methodist Church. Dorothy was a past member of
Rebekah.
She enjoyed playing cards especially bridge and
playing bingo.
She loved her grandchildren and cherished the
time she spent with them.

Wallen and his wife, Carole, of Iowa Falls,
Alice Rappe and her husband, Bill, of Clear

Roger was a lifelong resident of Mason City,
with the exception of a few years spent in Ames.
He was born on Sept. 26, 1948, the son of Roger
and Mary (Coyier) Cahalan in Mason City. He was
a graduate of the class of ’67 at Mason City
High School.
He held jobs in the North Iowa area, most
recently with Harley Davidson setting up bikes
and running parts.
He had a passion for riding motorcycles and
tinkering with them. Rathburn Lake was a
favorite fishing hole and often he would mix
fishing with chances of luck at Mille Lacs Lake
in Minnesota, sometimes winning at both.
In his early life he spent time being part of
his foster parents’ family, Howard and Vivian
Query.
Roger found fun and excitement in traveling all
over to new and interesting places.
TC is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Barlow,
and his granddaughter, Ashley, both of Mason
City; one son, Christopher Cooley of Battle
Creek, Mich.; one half-sister, Dawn Dean, of
Mason City; two half-brothers Scott Dean, of
Plymouth and Kim Dean, of Mason City; one aunt,
Leota Church; two foster sisters, Dixie and her
husband, Dean Shunkwiler, and Gwen and her
husband Francis Miller, all from Mason City;
several nieces and nephews and a whole host of
friends.
His parents, foster parents, half-sister,

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth
St., with lay assistant Richard Scott
officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake
Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday
at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N.
Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

or Opportunity Village.
Harold was born Feb. 7, 1927, in New Richland,
Minn., the son of Ben and Agnes (Loken) Shurson.
He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity
Lutheran Church in New Richland. Harold had
eight brothers and sisters.
He and his dad hauled livestock for Shurson
Bros. Trucking while two older brothers were in
the service. He worked for a creamery in
Hillsboro, N.D., from 1947 to 1949, and then
returned to work for Shurson Trucking.
In 1957, he started driving for Freeborn Co.
Co-op hauling Midland Products; and was
transferred to Clear Lake in 1963.
He began working with FS Service Co-op in 1969,
retiring in 1988.
Harold married Shirley Keane September 30, 1950,
in Waseca, Minn., and to this union five
children were born. He was a member of Zion
Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
Harold enjoyed woodworking, coin collecting,
playing cards and spending time with his family.
Harold is survived by his wife, Shirley Shurson,
of Clear Lake; three daughters, Janice Anderson
and her husband, Quentin, and their children
Bridget and Megan, of Joice, Julie Angle and her
husband, Allan, and their children, Ben Casebolt
and Andrea Schmidt and her husband, Scott, of
Clear Lake, and Jacki Lee and her husband, Jay,
of Mason City; one son, Joe Shurson and his
wife, Irene, and their children Ashton, Taylor,
Craig and Julie, of Iowa City; two
great-grandchildren, Nathan and Emily Schmidt;
one brother George Shurson and his wife,
Phyllis, of New Richland, Minn.; three sisters,
Marjorie Christenson and her husband, Leo, of
New Richland, Minn., Virginia Peterson and her
husband, Vince, of New Richland, Minn., and Joan
McQuire, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and many nieces
and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one
daughter, Jeanne (13 years old); three brothers,
Merle, Charles and Virgil Shurson; and one
sister, Beatrice Langent.

KATHRYN MARIE HARDING
CLEAR LAKE — Kathryn Marie Harding, 88, of Clear
Lake, died Thursday (June 3, 2004) at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave S.
in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan
officiating. Interment will be held at
Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time
of service on Monday at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Kathryn Harding
Memorial Fund.
Kathryn was born Dec. 22, 1915, in Rockwell, the
daughter of David and Loretta (Lisle) McCauley.
She graduated from Mason City High School.
Kathryn married Merlin Factor in 1934, and to
this union was born Marilyn Kay.
In 1943, Kathryn moved to Chicago where she
worked at Montgomery Ward and O’Hare
International Airport while she attended
business college.
After graduating, she became employed at
Fairfield Savings and Loan in Chicago. She
retired in 1979 as vice president of accounting.
She then moved to Clear Lake to be closer to her
loving family.
Kathryn was an avid reader, loved playing cards,
enjoyed being with her family and friends and
“being on the go.”
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church.
Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Marilyn
Sadler and her husband, Loren, of Clear Lake; a
grandson, Scott Sadler, of Clear Lake; one
sister, Devita Buffington, of Fairfield, Calif.;
and many nieces and nephews.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents;
three brothers, Lyle, Bill and Francis McCauley;
two sisters, Mildred Warin and Mae Merriss; and
special friend, John Lindberg.

NORA SPRINGS — Joseph R. Plummer, 76, of Nora
Springs, died Thursday (June 3, 2004) at Nora
Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday
at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye
Ave. in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Jim Turner
officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery,
Nora Springs.

Joseph Raymond Plummer was born Nov. 11, 1927,
the son of Charles and Blanche (Soucek) Plummer.
He was a 1946 graduate of Nora Springs High
School.
Joe served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at
Eide Electronics in Mason City for many years.
After retiring, he continued to repair radios
and televisions at his home. He enjoyed
traveling.
Joe is survived by several cousins including
Ruth Stark and her husband, Art, of Cedar
Rapids; Irene Dettert, of Center Point; Lavonn
Wilson and her husband, Walter, of Mason City;
and Edward Soucek, of Dougherty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two
sisters, Edna Plummer, and Edith Rookey.
