ALGONA— Ersel A. Alme, 97, of Algona, died at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Algona on Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004).

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Algona. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Ottosen, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the church.

BONNIE JEAN BANKS


CHARLES CITY— Bonnie Jean Banks, 77, of 3 Lions Drive, Charles City, died early Friday morning (Jan. 23, 2004) surrounded by family at her home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries presiding. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and the vigil wake service held at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa or Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

Bonnie Jean Banks was born in Mankato, Minn., July 15, 1926, the daughter of Leonard and Ellen (Eustice) Synder. She attended school in Charles City, graduating from Immaculate Conception Catholic School, in the Class of 1946.

Bonnie married her husband, Wes Banks, at Immaculate Conception Church in 1946. The couple was blessed with five children. She took great pleasure in providing for her family. Bonnie was employed with White Farm of Charles City in the traffic department for 24 years. From 1970 to 1973 she owned and operated B.J.’s Shoppe, a Hallmark-affiliated gift shop in Charles City.

Some of Bonnie’s interests, passions and leisure activities included dancing, socializing with friends at the Elks Club, enjoying the peace and tranquility of living on the river, watching the variety of wildlife prance through the backyard, whether it be the deer curiously nibbling for food, the birds singing in the trees or the terminally lonely white swan that basked in the sun and floated aimlessly on the water.

She lovingly cherished time spent with her entire family and looked forward to their traditional “Family Biscuit Club” Sunday mornings after church.

Bonnie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends who shared in her life.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her five children, Vickie Shollenbarger and her husband, Dennis, of Charles City; Karen Holzer and her husband, Ray, of Charles City; Robin Tegtmeier and her husband, Brian, of Louisville, Ky; Denny Banks and his wife, Barbara, of Charles City, and Faron Banks and his wife, Jill, of Charles City; 12 grandchildren, Tina Nelson and her husband, Bret; Tony Shollenbarger; Jeff Holzer and his wife, Angie; Jodi Page and her husband, Jason; Jill Jespersen and her husband, Scott; Kelli and Nick Tegtmeier; Nicole Davis and her husband, Mike; Marty Banks and his wife, April; Kiley Banks, Cody Banks and Caleb Banks.

She will also be missed by fourteen great grandchildren; a brother, Joe Synder and his wife, Marion of Charles City; two sisters, Irene Field and her husband, Paul, of Charles City, and Ann Aldridge and her husband, Woody, of San Marcos, Calif.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wes; a sister, Pat Apel; infant brother, Paul Synder and infant granddaughter, Tami Shollenbarger.

ELLA (LEWERKE) BERGMAN


BRITT—Ella (Lewerke) Bergman, 89, of 419 6th St. S.E., Britt, passed away Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Ella Bergman will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt with Pastor Scott Hontz and Pastor Art Woodward officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ella was born August 19, 1914, in Austinville, Iowa, to Harm and Jennie Miller Lewerke, the second of 10 children.

Ella married John Bergman on September 15, 1937, at Bethel Baptist Church parsonage in Britt. Ella received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1952, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was active in Ladies Missionary Fellowship and helped with the Awana Club until November of 2003.

Ella is survived by one daughter, Judy Oudekerk and her husband, Bob, of Britt; four sisters, Susan McClain; Jennie Forshee and her husband, Lynn; Rosie Brunsen, and Eileen Smith and her husband, Clifford, all of Britt; three brothers, Pete Lewerke and his wife, Viola, of Garner; Jake Lewerke and his wife, Ethel, of Clarion, and Elzo Lewerke and his wife, Betty, of Britt; three sisters-in-law: Eula Lewerke of Annandale, Minn., Grace Nelson and Helen Bergman both of Britt; brother-in-law, Bennie Bergman of Des Moines; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ralph and Beulah Riege of Sun City, Calif.; one aunt, Jennie Lewerke of Mason City, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, in 1997; one sister, Gertrude Smidt; and one brother, Harm Lewerke.

DONALD M. CLAUSON


FOREST CITY— Donald M. Clauson, age 90, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 23, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Larry Kidwell officiating. Burial will be at First Baptist Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to service at the church.

Donald M. Clauson was born in Forest City on January 4, 1914, the son of Andrew and Amelia (Hanson) Clauson. He received his education in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School. He worked for his parents in the Clauson Market in Forest City.

On June 8, 1938, he married Thora Thompson in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Forest City their entire married lives.

When Don’s parents passed away he took over the store, renaming it Don’s Food Market.

He was a talented musician and served as church organist at the First Congregational Church in Forest City for 25 years. He also played for numerous weddings and funerals over the years.

Don enjoyed woodworking and his family remembers the wonderful things he crafted from wood, including cribs, toys and rocking horses.

After retiring from the store, Don and Thora traveled south in the winter, visiting family in Texas, Arizona and Florida. They also took a trip to Europe and spent time in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather and treasured time spent with his family.

Don is survived by his wife, Thora, of Forest City; four children, Donelle Mackey and her husband, the Rev. James Mackey, of Winchester, Ill., Carolee Woodard and husband, Ronald, of Webster City, Jodi Wilde and husband, Elmer, of Las Vegas, Nev., and John A. Clauson of Berlin, Wis. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Arloene Lewis and a brother, Kenyon Clauson.

FRIEDRICH ‘FRED’ ENNEN


CHARLES CITY—Friedrich “Fred” Ennen, 81, a resident of 1301 E Street, Charles City, died Saturday, (Jan. 24, 2004) at USA Healthcare in Mason City.

Funeral services for Fred Ennen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. today and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Friedrich Cassen Ennen was born July 29, 1922, at Grossefehn, Germany, the son of Jacob and Antje (Tjaden) Ennen. He received his education in Germany and was a veteran of World War II. On October 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Hildegard Glomsda in Germany. They came to the United States in 1952, making their home in Greene and moving to Charles City in 1969.

Fred worked for 25 years at Oliver/White Farm Corporation retiring in 1984. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Brotherhood, Moose Lodge, White Farm Retirement Club, AFL/CIO No. 1315, and the Senior Citizens.

Fred liked to work with his hands as seen in his wood-carving skills and gardening abilities. Leisure time would be spent reading, playing 500 or swimming at the YMCA. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be remembered for his desire to help his friends in whatever way possible.

Fred and Hildegard enjoyed traveling to Germany where they visited their families.

Living family members include his wife, Hildegard, of Charles City; six children, Monika (Robert) Teeple of Greene; Erika (Thomas) Ennen of Deerfield, Wis.; Ingrid Ennen of Mason City; Jurgen (Marlene) Ennen of Homested; Werner (Marian) Ennen of Eau Claire, Wis.; and Manfred (Kathy) Ennen of Raymond; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two sisters, Hanna (Harry) Johnson of Allison, and Anita (Johann) Janssen of Germany.

His parents preceded him in death.

LILLIAN M. HAGEMAN


OSSIAN— Lillian M. Hageman, age 79, of Ossian, died Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) of cancer at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery both in Festina.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Ossian and again from 9 until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m., with a scripture service at 7 p.m. today.

Lillian was born on August 23, 1924, in Seneca, Wis., the daughter of William and Ida (Einck) Huinker.

She was united in marriage to Adrian Hageman on November 8, 1948, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian.

She is survived by her husband, Adrian, of Ossian; two sons, Harold (Kristi) of Ossian, and William (Jennie) of Ossian; four daughters, Sandy (Dave) Matt of Cedar Rapids, Peggy (Jerry) Becker of Sumner, Jeanne McGrath of Cresco, and Gerri (Tim) Allison of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; three great- granddaughters; four sisters, Grace (Eugene) Reicks of Lawler, Catherine (Ireanus) Moellers of Cresco, Eunice (Darrel) Bushman of Clerrmont, and JoAnn (Francis) Wenthold of Ossian; two brothers, William (Phyllis) of Postville and Tom of Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alice Reicks and Luella Reicks, and two infant sisters, Florence and Ida Huinker, and three brothers, Ralph and Charles and Donald Huinker in infancy.

WATERLOO — Margaret Hearity, 86, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, (Jan. 21, 2004) at her home.

No services are scheduled. Her body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.

She was born May 28, 1917, in Decorah, the daughter of Seber and Susie Olson Olson. She married Joseph Hearity in Mason City.

Margaret is survived by her two sons, Thomas of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Robert of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; brother, Sigart Olson; and a sister, Gail Pierce.

ELDORA— Jane Chaplin Newhall, 81, of Eldora, died Sunday (January 25, 2004) at the Colonial Manor, Zearing.

Funeral services for Jane Chaplin Newhall will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Linn’s Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present to receive friends between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.

BRITT— Lora Redenius, 93, of Britt, passed away Friday (January 23, 2004) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Lora Redenius will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Woden Christian Reformed Church (205 290th Street south of Woden) with Pastor Kevin Jordan officiating. Burial will take place in the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery near Woden.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Lora, the daughter of Eggo and Etta Eden Stohr, was born November 12, 1910, in Winnebago County northwest of Woden, Iowa. She received her education in the rural schools of Grant Township. Lora was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka.

On February 21, 1932, Lora was united in marriage with Menno Redenius at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka. Following their marriage, the couple moved to the Redenius family farm north of Hutchins and lived there until they retired and moved into Britt in 1968.

Lora was a faithful member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church since her marriage in 1932. Lora’s life was centered on her family. She loved flowers and enjoyed caring for her flower gardens.

Lora is survived by five sons and their families, Dr. Myron Redenius of Billings, Mont., Kermit Redenius of Clarion, Elwin Redenius and his wife, Linda, of Britt, Gerald Redenius and his wife, Yolanda, of Britt, and Ronald Redenius and his wife, Mary, of Forest City; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lydia Hillenga, of Woden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Menno; one daughter-in-law, Rose Redenius, three sisters, Etta Bruns, Caroline Senne, and Gertrude Kurtzleben, and two brothers, Henry Stohr, and one in infancy.

MABEL F. RENSINK


GARNER—Mabel F. Rensink, 96, of Garner, formerly of Hayfield, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Her funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mabel Fern Rensink, the daughter of James Otis and Gertrude Independence (Price) Earp, was born September 9, 1907, at Galesburg, Iowa. She moved with her family to South Dakota, Thief River Falls, Minn., and in 1916 to Crystal Lake. She graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1926. She received her associate of arts degree from Mason City Junior College and her bachelor of arts degree in public school music at MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis. She continued her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette and Drake University in Des Moines. Mabel taught kindergarten and lower elementary school grades at Hayfield Consolidated School and the Garner-Hayfield Community Schools from 1932 to 1971.

On April 10, 1941, she was married to Arnold “Jeff” Rensink at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. They made their home in Hayfield all of their married life. She became a resident of Concord Care Center in the spring of 2002.

She enjoyed serving Jesus by teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and playing piano or organ for services.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, UMW, Methodist Builder’s Club, Iowa Teacher’s Association, Crystal Lake Senior Citizens, the American Legion Auxiliary in Crystal Lake and the Hayfield Coffee Group.

She is survived by three nieces, six nephews and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.W. “Jeff” Rensink on September 10, 1990; her parents; sister, Juanita Earp; and two brothers, Howard and Claire Earp.

FOREST CITY — Mildred Anders, 82, of Forest City, died Monday (Jan. 26, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

MASON CITY — Gordon Thomas Bieth, 82, of 618 First St. S. E., died Sunday (Jan, 25, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, where a flag-folding ceremony will be conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a Scriptural wake service at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Gordon T. Bieth Memorial Fund.

Gordon Thomas Bieth was born April 27, 1921, at Fairmont, Minn., a son of Frank and Elsie (Lutz) Bieth. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School at Mason City.

In January of 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant in the 139th Army Air Force Base Unit in North Carolina, and was honorably discharged in January of 1949.

He returned to Mason City and was united in marriage to Martha Marie Morden of Tipton, on Oct. 11, 1948, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Mason City.

He worked for various companies in the Mason City area including International Harvester, Central Show Printing, Holsum Bakery, and then in 1970, worked for the Iowa State Liquor Commission until his retirement.

He loved fishing, hunting, and woodworking but his greatest love was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Survivors include his children, Tom (Kathy) Bieth of Montrose, Colo., and Ted (Helen) Bieth of Plymouth; one brother, Joseph (Vonda) Bieth of Glendale, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Lee Bieth of Durango, Colo., Casey Bieth of Montrose Colo., and Molly and Annie Bieth of Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; and his sister, Patricia Zwaska.

CHARLES CITY — Thola P. Bullen, 100, formerly of 2102 Clarkview Drive, Charles City, died Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, with the Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, in Charles City.

Visitation is not planned at this time.

The family request that those attending the graveside service on Wednesday meet directly at the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Those planning memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City.

DELYS COLEMAN


IOWA FALLS — Delys “Dee” Coleman, 76, of Muscatine, and formerly of Iowa Falls, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at the Riverbend Nursing and Rehab Center in Muscatine.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel.

Private burial will be at a later date.

WILMA DIETERICHS DE BERG


OSAGE — Wilma Dieterichs De Berg, 92, of Osage, died Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Wilma was born June 13, 1911, near Alburnette, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and May (Boyer) Brewer. The family moved to Floyd County in 1919.

She graduated from Orchard High School, and received her Teacher Certification from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls now known as the University of Northern Iowa.

Wilma was united in marriage to Theodore “Ted” Dieterichs on June 6, 1930. They farmed in the Osage area. Theodore died on Jan. 20, 1960.

Following Theodore’s death Wilma served as a House Mother for Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity at Iowa State University in Ames, for 10 years, after which she retired to Osage.

On May 8, 1976, Wilma married Chris De Berg at St. John’s Lutheran Church, south of Osage. They lived in his home in Cedar Falls. Chris died in August of 1983.

Following his death, Wilma returned to Osage. She has been a resident of the Faith Lutheran Home the last 14 years.

Wilma was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, south of Osage with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Her body was cremated.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

CLEAR LAKE — Marvin “Bud” H. Hedges, 79, 1033 19th St. S.W., Apt 14, Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Bud was born Dec. 6, 1924, in Moville, Iowa, the son of Henry and Lurie (Moser) Hedges. He graduated from Bronson High School, Bronson, Iowa in 1941.

He served in civil service as a mechanic at Kaneohe Bay Marine Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. He returned to Windom, Minn.

He married Betty Jean Wood on April 6, 1947, in Jackson, Minn. He worked at various General Motors dealerships in the Windom area as an auto technician and service manager. Upon his retirement in 1987, they moved to Clear Lake, to be closer to their son, Brian, and his daughter, Michelle.

Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He loved going to coffee with the boys. He was an avid reader of Westerns and history.

HAMPTON — Dorothy Elizabeth Henderson, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) in Des Moines with family and friends by her side.

Dorothy was born June 3, 1932, the daughter of Chas and Sophia Lursen of Hampton.

On Feb. 7, 1952, she married Emmett Wayne Henderson of Dumont. They lived and worked in the Hampton area all of their married lives.

Dorothy worked for the Hampton School District for 20 years as a school bus driver until her retirement in 1993.

She will be sadly missed by her seven children, Randy of Sioux City, Les of Des Moines, Don of Hampton, Ron of Des Moines, Sheri Roberts of Mitchellville, Sharon Henderson of Des Moines and David of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; and her sister, Gloria Tjabring of Geneva.

ST. ANSGAR — LaVerne R. Michaels, 80, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

LaVerne R. “Mike” Michaels was born on Oct. 9, 1923, in Worth County, the son of Benjamin and Isabel (Halverson) Michaels.

Following the death of his mother when he was 5, he lived with and was raised by his foster parents who were his aunt and uncle, Sever and Lizzie Halverson.

He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1941.

On Jan.16, 1943, he entered the military service and proudly served his country in World War II as a medic, serving in the European Theater of Operation. He participated in the Normandy Invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge –for which he received two bronze stars as well as the Good Conduct Medal. In June of 1997 he received a gold medal from the French government for his participation in the Liberation.

Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 8, 1945, he enrolled in and graduated from Hamilton College. He was employed in the office of The REA in St. Ansgar as head bookkeeper and office manager for seven years.

He married Verva Chehock on Oct. 22, 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Plymouth, and they made their home in St. Ansgar.

In February 1954, he became employed by the St. Ansgar State Bank and continued there for 35 years, retiring in 1989 as senior vice president.

He was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, was Sunday School superintendant, and chairman of the congregation.

His service to the community included treasurer of Boy Scouts, secretary of St. Ansgar Athletics, secretary of St. Ansgar School Board, secretary-treasurer of Advisory Board of Good Samaritan Center, nine years on Library Board including serving as president, 10 years on City Council, and six years as mayor.

He was a 57-year member of American Legion, was Post Commander and served on the firing squad and honor guard.

In his leisure time he enoyed golf, bowling, and watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his mother, foster parents and siblings, Gladys Nelson, Stanford Halverson, and Dorothy Stoll.

He is survived by his wife, Verva of St. Ansgar; one daughter, Suzanne (Dean) Shoars of Waverly, two sons, Steven (Mary Jane) Michaels of St. Ansgar, and Mark Michaels of St. Ansgar; five grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Shoars of Asherville, N.C., Ryan Shoars of Clearwater, Fla., Brendan Shoars of Lubbock, Texas, Lindsey and Laura Michaels of Iowa City; one great-grandson, Jackson Shoars of Asherville, N.C.; and foster brother, Gerald (Mary Ann) Halverson of St. Ansgar.

Lucille was born April 17, 1918, in Mason City, the daughter of Nels and Hazel (Overturf) Ouverson. She was raised in Fertile, moving to Mason City at the age of 17, where she graduated from Mason City High School.

Lucille married Milton E. Phillips on July 23, 1937 in Mason City.

Lucille was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gildner Group, Good Sam’s Camping Club and the Dirty Dozen Club.

Lucille was known for her crazy cake and homemade ice cream and no meal was complete without a piece of pie and cake.

She was writer of short stories about family, camping and nature, especially bird watching.

Her favorite form of expression was poetry, and all her writings were laced with her wonderful wit; but all would agree her highest calling was that of a wise and loving mother and grandmother.

Lucille is survived by her children, Marilyn S. Hall and husband, Wayne, of Cambridge, Minn., Richard M. Phillips and wife, Sandra, of Prior Lake, Minn., Judy A. Allen and husband, Robert, of Mason City, Charles E. Phillips and wife, Karol, of Wichita, Kan., and Bradley K. Phillips and wife, Cynthia, of Wichita, Kan.; brother, Luverne Ouverson of Mason City; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

CHARLES CITY — Kenneth “Red” E. Stiles, 78, passed away Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Kenneth “Red” E. Stiles was born Jan. 14, 1926, at Rudd, to William E. and Ruth (Wagner) Stiles. Red graduated from Rudd High School.

On Dec. 13, 1945, he was united in marriage to Grace Edna Hennick in Austin, Minn. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army during World War II, being honorably discharged as a Spec.-Sgt.

Kenneth was a lifetime resident of Rudd, being self-employed all his life as a farmer, owner and operator of Rudd Lumber and Hardware and Stiles Corp. Construction until his retirement in 2000.

Kenneth belonged to The United Methodist Church of Rudd, the American Legion, and Lions.

He is survived by his wife and friend of 59 years, Grace; three sons, William B. (Michelle), of Trauco Canyon, Calif., Randall Lee (Kathy) of Rockwell, and Michael (Jackie) of Rudd; one daughter, Sue A. Charlie was born in Perry on July 8, 1942, the son of Thorsten and Winifred (Hight) Hellman. He grew up in Jamaica, Iowa and graduated from Jamaica, Consolidated High School in 1961.

In 1978, Charlie married Margaret Weinberger. To this union two children were born, Mary Margaret and Edward Charles.

Charlie worked for Triggs Manufacturing in Perry and moved to Belmond with the company on Dec. 15, 1965. He worked at Triggs for six years.

Charlie also worked for USS Agri Chemicals for 14 ½ years from 1971 to 1986. He worked for Keifer Built for six years until he was unable to work anymore.

Charile enjoyed fishing and photography. Charlie liked playing family games, being with his family and having coffee and talking with the True Value guys.

Charlie belonged to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Masonic Lodge and was a life member of the DeMolay.

Charles is survived by the love of his life, Margaret Hellman of Belmond; one daughter, Mary Margaret and her special friend, Jesse Gamble, of Alexander; one son, Edward Charles and his wife, Shannon, of Belmond; one grandson, Jonathan Gamble of Alexander; one sister, Susan Gottschalk of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Keith and his wife, Pat, of Boone, and Edwin and his wife, Cherie, of Jamaica; two cousins, Gordon Hellman of Atlanta, Ga., and Ellen Hellman of Des Moines.

She loved to crochet, do word finds, go camping and traveling. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

NORTHWOOD — Berneice Louise Branstad, 85, of Northwood and Kensett, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the chapel.

Berneice Louise Branstad was born on July 10, 1918, in Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of John and Margaret Ash. Berneice worked for J.P. Decker’s meat packing plant in Mason City, and also worked for Shift’s Nursing Home in Mason City. Berneice owned and operated Beeives Antiques in Kensett.

She enjoyed gardening, antiquing and going to auctions.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Iver Dean Branstad and his wife, Edith, of St. Ansgar, and Harold Branstad of Wisconsin; a daughter, Virginia Servantez and her husband, Mike, of Mason City; many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; many brothers and sisters; a son-in-law, Roger Bushbaum of Manly; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Iver Branstad; a son, August “Barney” Branstad, who died in February 1992; a daughter, Charlotte Bushbaum who died May 7, 2001, and a very special friend, Arnold Thomp-son, of 26 years who died on Aug. 18, 2003.

FOREST CITY — Mildred K. Anders, 82, of Forest City, died Monday (Jan. 26, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Mildred Katherine Sophia Anders, the daughter of Emil L. and Nicolina (Preuss) Schneider, was born on May 8, 1921 in Worthington, Minn.

Both of her parents were born in Germany and were part of the wave of immigrants in the early 1900s seeking a better life in the United States.

Mildred would later be joined by a sister, Irene.

When Mildred was a young child, the family relocated in Avoca, Iowa, where Mildred attended school, graduating from Avoca High School with the Class of 1939.

After graduation, she work-ed as a telephone operator at Avoca and did secretarial work. During World War II, she worked for Army Airwaves Communication in Alaska where she would meet her future husband, William R. Anders, who was serving with the United States Army.

Mildred and Bill were married in Detroit on Aug. 26, 1945, and purchased one of the “starter homes” being built across the United States for returning veterans. Their daughter, Parris, was born in 1946, and followed by their daughter, Joan, in 1947.

Mr. Anders worked in the composing room of a Detroit newspaper while Mildred was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker.

Mildred and Bill were longtime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rose-ville, Mich., and both liked to provide assistance to those less fortunate than themselves.

Mildred was an avid read-er and excellent writer who corresponded with a multitude of people throughout her lifetime.

In 1995, Bill was beginning his struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and the couple moved to Forest City to be near their daughter, Joan, and her family.

Mildred was a devoted caregiver for Bill until his death on Jan. 21, 1997.

Mildred always felt that the crowning achievement of her life was her daughters, of whom she was extremely proud.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Parris and her husband, Robert Kramer, of Dallas, Texas, and Joan and her husband, Raymond Beebe, of Forest City; a sister, Irene McCool of Shelby, Iowa; and five grandchildren and their families, Blane Beebe and his wife, Sara, and their children, Talon, Benjamin and Maxwell of Bettendorf, Iowa, Kristen and her husband, Dan Ollenburg, and their daughters, Sophia and Ava, of Clear Lake, William Beebe of Minneapolis and his daughter Emmalee Swanson of Forest City, Jeffrey Beebe and his children, Aunastashya and Nieko of Forest City, and Juston Kramer and his son, Austin, of Dallas, Texas.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother-in-law, Malcolm McCool; and a great-granddaughter, Kylie Vaile.

CONCORD, Calif. — Cheri Jenkins Hascup, 56, died Monday (Jan. 26, 2004) in Concord, Calif., of a massive stroke.

She was born on Aug. 25, 1947, and was raised in Fertile. Cheri graduated from Forest City High School.

After graduation, she moved to California and has resided there since.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ed; sons, Paul and David Martinson; four grandchildren, all of Concord, Calif.; mother, Cora Jenkins, of Mason City; sisters, Fran Cates, of Mason City, Connie Dirks, of Clear Lake, Bonnie Secory, of Clear Lake; a brother, Lanny Jenkins, of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

Her father, Lawrence Jenkins, and sister, Norma Jean Tarr, preceded her in death.

INDEPENDENCE — Rachel A. Reuter, 18, of In-dependence, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at the Buch-anan County Health Center in Independence from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born on April 29, 1985, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Gary Lee and Brendy Bernadette (Mathern) Reuter. She graduated from the North Central High School in Manly with the Class of 2003 and had taken classes at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

She worked at the HyVee grocery store in Mason City and at Bertch Cabinets in Jesup, Iowa.

Ms. Reuter is survived by her mother, Brendy Reuter of Independence; her father and stepmother, Gary and Patricia Reuter of Manly; three brothers, Kevin Reuter and Keith Reuter, both of Manly, and Ricky Reuter, of Independence; and two step- sisters, Kelly Christiansen and Lindsay Christiansen, both of Manly. She is also survived by her grandparents, Miriam “Micky” Rand of Dunkerton, Donald and Kathy Reuter of Cedar Falls, Lois Wilcoxson of Oklahoma, and Robert Mathern of Waterloo; her great-grandmother, Florence Reuter of Waverly, and step-grandparents, Don and Mona McCourt of Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Darlene Mathern, and great-grandparents, Bus and Gladys Brustkern, Leo Reuter, Leroy and Alene Maser, and Les and Dorothy Mathern.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

OSAGE ����� Darlene Rae (Fox) Foth, 78 , of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 29, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Darlene was born Nov. 6, 1925, at Riceville, the daughter of Chauncy and Adeline (Shea) Fox. Darlene graduated from Riceville High School in 1943.

She attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids and graduated as a RN from a three-year nursing program.

Darlene moved to Osage and worked at the Nisson Hospital.

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1947, Darlene was united in marriage to Thomas W. Foth at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

She worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals while Thomas was a student at the University of Iowa.

When they returned to Osage, she worked at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital as an obstetrics and operating room nurse.

Later, Darlene was employ-ed as a school nurse at the Osage Community Schools.

Darlene enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She had a passion for reading and writing. Her favorite Irish comment was “By-De-God”.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Darlene will be greatly missed by her family and her husband of 56 years, Thomas Foth of Osage. Robert Kenneth Strickler was born Feb. 22, 1933, in Jenners Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, a son of George Alfred and Neva Virginia (Blair) Strickler, and died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit in Charles City.

He received his education in the public schools in Bos-well, Pa., and entered the United States Air Force on Aug. 30, 1950, serving with the 802nd Motor Vehicle Squad. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 5, 1953.

On June 25, 1952, he was united in marriage to Joan Hartwell in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City and later in Nora Springs. They were both employed by Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. in Mason City.

Bob retired in 1985 with 31 years of service to the com-pany.

Bob and Joan moved to Greene in 1995.

They enjoyed traveling, which included going to Branson, Mo., often. Bob’s interests included hunting, fishing and working on home improvement projects. He was a good cook.

Bob was a member of the Nora Springs Volunteer Am-bulance for eight years, CPR instructor and served on the Nora Springs City Council.

He was Little League coach, Boy Scout leader and a member of the Nora Springs H.D.S. Post 449 American Legion.

He was custodian of the United Methodist Church for several years.

Living family members include his loving wife of 52 years, Joan, of Greene; one daughter, Connie (John) Stone of Ellenville, N.Y.; two sons, Robert Jr. (Peggy) Strickler of Bristow, and Jeff (Jan) Strickler of Waverly; five grandchildren, Tonya and her husband, Sam, Jessie, Jonna, Justin and Jennifer; two great-grandchildren, Sammy and Elena; and one brother, George (June) Strickler of Pittsburgh, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

Edward John Roskup was born Aug. 23, 1928, at St. Ansgar, a son of Joseph and Pauline (Winter) Roskup, and died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at his home in Greene under the care of Hospice of North Iowa.

He spent his early childhood in St. Ansgar until the family moved to Iowa City, where he attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s School.

He was first employed as a waiter at the University Hospital.

On May 3, 1946, he was inducted into the United States Army, where he served as a guard with Company L 15th Infantry in Berlin, Germany. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 28, 1947.

Following his discharge he was employed for the University Laundry.

In 1950, he became employ-ed as a bus driver for Iowa City Coach Co. and later Iowa City Transit, from which he retired with more than 39 years of service.

He received many awards for safe driving and years of performance. He was also honored for lifesaving by Gov. Robert D. Ray.

On June 30, 1956, he was united in marriage to Twyla Marie Losee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. They made their home at 1308 E. Bloomington in Iowa City for 26 years before moving to Greene in September 1991.

Ed and Twyla were faith-ful members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene.

Twyla died on Oct. 23, 1998.

Ed will be remembered as an avid walker, often times walking up to eight miles a day.

He enjoyed fishing, eating ice cream and spending time with his grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Teresa Marie Van Orden of Greene; one son, Edward Roskup Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Wellman; three grandchildren, Edward J. “E.J.” Roskup III of Wellman, Billy Van Orden of Greene and Karitta Rae Van Orden of Mason City; his twin sister, Rosemary Dahnke of Iowa City, and a brother, Jake (Phyllis) Roskup of Iowa City.

Ed was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Paulina Roskup, Katherine Davis, Pauline Coder and Mary Oesterricher, and three brothers, Andrew, Peter and Joseph Roskup.

NORTHWOOD — Anita Anna Sophia Glaser, 84, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 27, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Anita was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Star Prairie, Wis., the daughter of Albert and Lena Schwartz. She received her education in New Ulm Schools.

On July 2, 1937, she married Roland Glaser in New Ulm, Minn.

She was baptized and confirmed in New Ulm, Minn., and was a long-time member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Anita was active in church quilting, Lydia Circle and the First Lutheran Church Women. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was treasurer for many years.

She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, and her family and grandchildren.

She had various employment in Mankato, Minn. In 1952, Roland and Anita moved to Northwood after purchasing the Northwood Cleaners, operating the dry-cleaners until their retirement.

Anita was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, in 2000; parents, Albert and Lena Schwartz; and brothers, Helmut, Gilbert and John.

Survivors include one son, Jerome Glaser and his wife, Dian, of Bloomington, Minn.; three daughters, Joan Per-kins and her husband, Stan, of New Hampton, Mary Bolton, of Springfield, Ore., and Anita “Sue” Reyerson and Erbin Anderson, of Northwood; one sister, Anna Schwantes, of Fulda, Minn.; one brother, Ray Schwartz and his wife, Dorothy, of Frost, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Steinke, of New Ulm, Minn., and Muggs Harding and her husband, Charlie, of Kasota, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, James Glaser and his wife, Carol, of Bettendorf, and Orville Strom, of New Ulm, Minn.; grandchildren, Scott, Christopher and Jonathan Perkins, Vanessa Balhorn, Stacey Davies, Alicia Glaser, Omar Wingate, Jakob Bolton, Michael Reyerson and Julie Zrostlik; 21 great-grandchildren and many, many friends.

AMOS WEMPEN


BUFFALO CENTER —Funeral services for Amos Wempen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center with the Rev. Paul Haugen officiating. Interment will be in Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Amos Wempen, son of Dick and Grace (Adams) Wempen, was born on June 30, 1907, near George, Iowa. He, with his parents, moved to Buffalo Center in 1912. Amos attended Buffalo Center schools.

On Feb. 11, 1932, Amos was united in marriage to Jeanette Lubben in Buffalo Center. Together they farmed north of Buffalo Center and raised a family of three boys, Richard, Rollin and Royce.

Amos enjoyed the farm life, being able to plant and to harvest the fruit of the land and then to share those products with his family and many friends.

He will be remembered for his raspberries, flowers and his homegrown honey.

After retirement and when Amos and Jeanette moved into town in 1979, many local businesses received flowers grown in their garden during Amos’ morning visits.

Amos served as a personal property tax assessor for Winnebago County. He also served on the Buffalo Center Community School Board, was a seed corn salesman and was a fourth-generation bee keeper. He was an avid sports fan and he really enjoyed Buffalo Center girls basketball. He was recognized as North Iowa Schools’ Fan Of The Year while in his 80s.

He was able to live independently until age 93, when he became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. Amos died there on Tuesday (Jan. 27, 2004) at the age of 96.

Amos is survived by his three sons: Richard and his wife, Rita, of Clear Lake, Rollin and his wife, Kathy, of Fairmont, Minn., and Royce and his wife, Linda, of St. Peter, Minn., and 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving him are two brothers, George and his wife, Irene, of Buffalo Center, and Harry and his wife, Edith, of Oregon; his sister, Esther Grimes, of Buffalo Center; sisters-in-law, Lydia Gruis of Waukon, Arlene Ostercamp of Titonka and Esther Lubben of Forest City, and by several other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanette, in 1999; his sister, Margaret Sonnenberg, and his brother, William.

Charles “Chuck” William Spillett was born on Aug. 22, 1922, in Rockwell, Iowa, the son of William and Crystal May (Ball) Spillett. He at-tended and received his education in the Mason City Schools.

In his earlier years, Chuck worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Mason City, and until his retirement, he work-ed for many years at the Rose Bowl in Mason City.

Chuck spent his last years at the farm in rural Clear Lake, sitting on a bench, smoking cigars and drinking Diet Pepsi.

He loved playing musical instruments, listening to music and fishing.

Left to cherish his memory is a sister, Viola Awe, of Clear Lake, and many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lillian Hoffman and Daisy Darlene Schellsmidt, and a niece, Jackie White.

CHARLES CITY — William “Willie” Rouse, 62, of Cable, Wis., and formerly of Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at his home of natural causes.

A funeral Mass for Willie Rouse will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at a later date. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass Saturday at the church.

William Thomas Rouse was born Dec. 10, 1941, at Elma, the son of Leo and Maxine (Elliott) Rouse. He graduated from Colwell Consolidated High School in 1959.

Willie served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1964, received a hardship discharge and returned to Charles City to help raise his younger siblings, working for many years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Co. In 1981, he moved to Cable, Wis., to “fulfill his dreams” and re-mained there until his death.

Willie was a true outdoorsman and lived off the land. He served as a guide for fishermen and hunters, produced maple syrup and grew mushrooms.

His interests included visiting with people, teaching children the basics of outdoor living and playing cards.

Willie will be remembered for his ability to make the best out of any situation.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Living family members include his mother, Maxine Rouse of Elma; four brothers, Elliott “Duff” (Patsy) Rouse of Charles City, Eugene “Nick” (Kathy) Rouse of Denver, Colo., and Tom (Gail) Rouse, and Dennis (Kim) Rouse, both of Charles City; four sisters, JoAnn Chambers, Suzanne (Jerry) Hartwell, Linda (Bill) Mitchell and Lora (Monte) Millard, all of Charles City, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

His father preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1963.

IOWA FALLS — Kermit V. Smith, 87, of Iowa Falls, passed away Sunday (Jan. 25, 2004) at the Ellsworth Muni-cipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Private graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. The Rev. Don Preston of the First United Methodist Church officiated, and military honors were provided by Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post 188, Iowa Falls.
