MASON CITY — Jeanette E. Clark, 84, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral service for Jeanette will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Bill Poland and the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Interment will be in Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to Wesley United Methodist Church.

Jeanette E. Adams was born Oct. 7, 1919, the daughter of Charles D. and Mary R. (McElroy) Adams in Belle Plaine.

Her family moved to Mason City in 1936 and she grad-uated from Mason City High School in 1937.

Jeanette went on to LaJames Beauty School and graduated in 1939.

On Dec. 19, 1939, she was united in marriage to Harold A. Clark in Northwood.

Jeanette worked for Ann Gilbert’s beauty shop and later for Tyler Ryan and Kellums making draperies.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Carey and husband, William, of Rapid City, S.D., and Donna Shelton and husband, Richard, of Bay City, Mich.; son, Jack Clark and wife, Barbara, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; brother, Oliver Adams and wife, Gladys, of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Yanney, Jane Ginapp and Marcella Clark, all of Mason City, and Irene Clark of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Nancy Powlowski and husband, Pat, of Pierre, S.D., Jon Carey and wife, Brenda, of Aberdeen, S.D., Mark Carey of Rapid City, Sara Volk and husband, Steve, of Rapid City, Jason Clark and wife, Audrey, of New Hope, Minn., Jeff Clark and wife, Keri, of Cotton, Minn., Todd Shelton of Bay City, Minn., Kimberly Kelly and husband, Keith, of Bay City; 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold, on Nov. 7, 1981; brother, Robert Adams; sister, Mrs. Lyle (Violetta) Huff; two infant sons; two infant grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

MESA, Ariz. — Clarence A. Boehnke, 73, of 8126 Monte, Mesa, Ariz., died Wed-nesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Garner, with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Interment will be in the St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

Clarence was born June 20, 1930, to Charles and Elsie Berghoefer Boehnke on the family farm north of Ventura. He attended St. John’s Paro-chial School and graduated from Ventura High School in 1948.

He is survived by his children, Gary Boehnke (Katherine Hawker), and Cindy Wood (John); his grandchildren, Josh, Chad, Sarah, Winona, and Micah; brothers, Armand (Marjule), Eldon (Alphia), and Walter (Betty); sisters-in-law, Doris and Louise.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Warriner); his parents; and brothers, Harold and Roland.


In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the Faith Lutheran Church, Overguaard, Ariz., Lutheran Hour Ministry or Hospice of the Valley.

RAYMOND JOSEPH POWER


OSAGE — Raymond Joseph Power, 65, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at home after a long battle with cancer.

Ray was born in Elma, on Sept. 17, 1938, to George C. and Helena (Boehmer) Power. He graduated from Osage High School, then served four years in the Navy.

In 1963, he was united in marriage to Carol (Wolff) Power. They were blessed with seven wonderful children.

Ray was employed at Oliver-White Farms for 27 years. From 1983 to 1988, Raymond and Carol owned and operated a family restaurant in Scranton, Iowa.

Upon returning to Osage, he was employed with Adams Painting and Drywall until his retirement in 2000.

Raymond enjoyed spend-ing time with his family and friends, and working with his horses and dogs.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military honors at the graveside by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Power, of Osage; seven children: Deanna Machin (Troy) of Osage, Sheila Adams (Dan) of St. Ansgar, Rachael Kimmey (Kenneth) of Virginia Beach, Va., Theresa Ahlf (Robert) of St. Ansgar, Rebecca Secrist and friend, Chuck Hurley, of Osage, Rodney Power of Osage, and Rhonda Muller (Larry) of Osage; 17 grandchildren, Anthony and wife, Emily, Wade, Amber and Ashley Machin; Derrick, Crystal and Heather Adams; Anna and Jessica Kimmey; Cory, Cylea and Caylin Ahlf; Jordan and Stephanie Ackerman and Trevor Secrist; Sophia and Owen Muller; two brothers, Cliff Powers of St. Ansgar, and Tom Powers (Zoe) of Kensett; two sisters, Donna Mae Mobley of Osage, and Sandra Bushbaum (Dallas) of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Bev Griga (Don) of St. Ansgar; numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

NORA SPRINGS — Gary Lack, 58, of rural Nora Springs, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at his home.

Gary was born Aug. 29, 1945, at Osage, the son of Harold and Mildred (Kinney)Lack of rural Orchard. He attended grade school in Orchard.

He graduated from Osage High School in 1963, where he participated in football and wrestling.

Gary attended the University of Northern Iowa upon completion of high school.

Gary married Veronica M. (Naumann) Lack on Jan. 16, 1979. They resided in Rockford until 1986, and then lived in Cedar Falls and Mason City until 1989, when they moved to Buffalo, Wyo. They moved to their present address in 1993.

Gary worked for a short time after college at the John Deere Foundry in Waterloo. He then worked at the Lehigh Portland Cement Company in Mason City for nearly 20 years, where he was a representative of Local D-106. Gary retired from Lehigh in 1985.

In 1989, he and Veronica sold their home in Mason City and bought a motel in Wyoming. After four great years, the family exchanged their motel for the farm, where they now live.

Gary’s hobbies and interests pertained mostly to his family. Since four of his children graduated from the University of Iowa, he was a strong supporter of Hawkeye athletics, primarily football and wrestling.

He spent a great deal of time keeping up with the activities and ventures of his children.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Inurnment will be in the Orchard Cemetery in Orchard.

A gathering of friends and family will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

The family suggests that memorials may be directed to the Lack Family Memorial Education Fund at 1475 325th St., Nora Springs, IA 50458.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica M. Lack, of Nora Springs; six children, Dr. Anthony L. Lack of Baytown, Texas, Heidi M. (Dr. Robert) Thunhorst of Iowa City, Tanya R. (Shawn) Hamilton of Kansas City, Mo., Benjamin J. (Fernanda De Collo) Lack of West Des Moines, Adam M. Lack of Nora Springs, and William D. Lack and his fiancee, Brandi Moon, of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; three grandchildren, Erica N. Lack, Gustav M. Thunhorst, and Gabriella D. Lack; his father, Harold Lack of Orchard; one brother, James (Helen) Lack of Orchard; one sister, Margaret Lack and husband, Stewart, of Hood, Va.; one paternal aunt, Marilyn (Philip) Larson of Mission, Texas; and many cousins.

IOWA CITY — Jean Eleanor Murr, 79, of Iowa City, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the recrea-tion room at Oaknoll Re-tirement Residence in Iowa City. On-street parking will be available for those attending. Private burial will be at the Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden.

Memorials may be given to St. Luke’s Hospital and sent to the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation at 1026 A. Ave N.E., Cedar Rapids, IA 52406.

Jean was born April 16, 1924, in Woden, to Charles and Pearl Murr. She attended school and graduated from Corwith High School in 1941.

Jean worked as a dental assistant in Algona and Spencer for several years before attending St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, graduating in 1949 with an RN degree.

She started her nursing career at St. Luke’s, where she became head nurse in the medical ward for 10 years. She then joined the University of Iowa hospital school as a nursing supervisor for the second shift. She was with the hospital school for over twenty years.

Jean has been a resident of Oaknoll Retirement Residence since 1997.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, the Fifth District Nurses Association and the St. Luke’s Alumni Association.

Her family includes her brother, Charles and his wife, Mary, of Sun City West, Ariz.; a niece, Janet Cane; nephews, David and Scott Murr, all of the Seattle, Wash., area; and many friends.

BARBARA J. CARMAN


TOPEKA, Kan. — Barbara J. Carman, 68, of 1406 31st St. S.W., Topeka, Kan., died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2004) at a Topeka hospital following a short illness.

She was born April 15, 1935, in Mason City, the dau-ghter of Charles and Anna (Stalzer) Edel. Barbara graduated from St. Joseph High School of Mason City in 1953.

On April 30, 1953, she married Jack Carman. To-gether they owned and operated Johnston’s Flowers until 1980.

At that time, they moved to Topeka where she furthered her education at Washburn College in Topeka.

She was active in various charities and always had time for the growing number of grandchildren and great-grand-children.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Jack; her four sons, Paul Carman and his wife, Terry, of Clear Lake, Stan Carman and his wife, Cindy, of Carrolton, Texas, Phil Carman and his wife, Bobbi Jo, of Jackson, Tenn. and Douglas Carman and his wife, Peggy, of Merriam, Kan.; a daughter, Mary Carman and her husband, Mike Ferguson, of Marlboro, Mass.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Bud Edel, of Mason City; and three sisters, Louise Hofler, of Nora Springs, Karen McGrath, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Joan Stover, of South St. Paul, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, in Topeka, Kan. She was cremated and private inurnment will take place at a later date.

CHARLES CITY — Wilma M. Grant, 86, of 1308 S. Main St., Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Rev. Gayle Wilcox, Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Lunch will follow the burial at the Boyd Building in Shell Rock.

DUMONT — Claire N. Stock, 79, of Dumont, died Friday (Jan. 16, 2004) at her home in Dumont.

She was born Dec. 20, 1924, in San Francisco, Calif., to Francis Kavanaugh and Helen Martin Kavanaugh.

She graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic Schools in San Francisco. She received her nursing degree from St. Joseph College of Nursing in San Francisco, and received her masters degree in nursing from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

She served in the Navy.

She married Dale Stock on June 4, 1947, in Hampton.

She was a registered nurse for 30 years at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. She retired in 1986.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She taught Catholicism, was a nursing instructor at NIACC in Mason City, a 4-H leader and was on the St. Francis Church Guild in Dumont.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Stock, of Dumont; daughter, Deb and husband, Glen Young, of Greeley, Iowa; son, David and wife, Jo Stock, of Parkersburg; grandson, Josh Ott, of Waterloo; granddaughters, Kay Stock, of Waterloo, Heather Ott, of Readlyn, Molly Stock, of Parkersburg; great-granddaughters, Brittney Brommel, of Readlyn, Valley True, of Mitchellville, and Linzee Osborn, of Readlyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Mary.

PALMER J. OLSON


MARSHALLTOWN — Palmer J. Olson, 85, of 1301 Summit St., Marshalltown, died Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service in the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Memorials may be directed to the family in his name.

Palmer was was born on Aug. 1, 1918, in Lake Mills, the son of Hans and Adena Frost Olson. He lived in Lake Mills until he was in the 6th grade, at which time his family moved to Garner.

He graduated from Garner High School and was drafted into the Army on Oct. 15, 1941, and went to Camp Wallis, Texas.

Palmer was united in marriage with Vera Hedgecock on March 22, 1943, in Silverdale, Wash.

After his military service, he moved to Mason City in 1947, where he started plastering houses.

He then moved back to Garner to work with his dad’s company, Hans Olson and Son Plastering.

He was known for plastering many houses in the Garner area and for his talent in textured plastering.

When the plastering business ended and dry wall started, he began working for Mercy Hospital in Mason City as their plasterer and painter.

He retired from Mercy Hospital in 1980, after losing his eyesight to macular degeneration.

He lived in Mason City until he moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown due to ill health.

Palmer is survived by a son, John (Bobbie) Olson of Marshalltown; daughter, Jo (Jeff) Bantz of Mason City; son, Hans Olson of Fairfield, Iowa; daughter, Kristine Olson of Ventura, Calif.; grandchildren, Jonathan and Eric Olson, Lyndsee and Jaime Bantz, Rama and Hans Eric Jr. and step-grandchildren, Jeanne and Heather Loney; great-grandchildren, Shaylyn and Treyton Bantz, and step great-grandchildren, Dakota and Alyxs Loney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Vera; his sister, Helen Lutcavish; granddaughter, Jennifer Nedved and step-granddaughter, Tricia Loney.

OSAGE — Adeline Dammen, age 86, of Osage died Saturday (Jan. 17, 2004) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Fun-eral Home in Osage with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Champion – Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Adeline was born June 18, 1917, near St. Ansgar, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Bertha (Bruggeman) Brandt. She was married on Oct. 30, 1937, to Edwin Dammen in Osage. Adeline attended St. Ansgar schools. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Mitchell, and Mitchell and Osage Senior Citizens.

Adeline is survived by one daughter, Carole (Darwin) Benson of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Larry (Andrea) Dammen of Osage and Kevin Dammen also of Osage; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one soon to be born; one sister, Norma Wright of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin Dammen, in 1990; three sisters, Frances Brandt, in her youth, Esther Gunsallus and Ardena Holm; two brothers, Raymond and Roy Brandt; and three grandchildren.

Palmer was born on Aug. 1, 1918, in Lake Mills, the son of Hans and Adena (Frost) Olson. He lived in Lake Mills until he was in the sixth grade at which time they moved to Garner. He graduated from Garner High School and was drafted into the army on Oct. 15, 1941, and went to Camp Wallis, Texas. Palmer was united in marriage with Vera Hedgecock on Mar. 22, 1943, in Silverdale, Wash. After his military service ended he moved to Mason City in 1947 where he began plastering houses. He then moved back to Garner to work with his dad’s company, Hans Olson and Son Plastering. He was known for plastering many houses in the Garner area and for his talent in textured plastering. When the plastering business ended, and drywall started, he began working for Mercy Hospital in Mason City as their plasterer and painter. He retired from Mercy Hospital in 1980 after losing his eyesight to macular degeneration. He lived in Mason City until he moved to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown due to ill health.

Palmer is survived by his son, John (Bobbie) Olson of Marshalltown; his daughter, Jo (Jeff) Bantz of Mason City; his son, Hans Olson of Fairfield; daughter, Kristine Olson of Ventura; grandchildren, Jonathan and Eric Olson, Lyndsee and Jaime Bantz, Rama and Hans Eric, Jr. ; step-grandchildren, Jeanne Wolken and Heather Loney; great-grandchildren, Shaylyn and Treyton Bantz; and step great-grandchildren, Dakotah Wolken and Alexia Loney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vera; sister, Helen Lutcavish; grand-daughter, Jennifer Nedved, and step-granddaughter, Tricia Loney.

GARNER — Verner E. Lau, 83, of Garner died Friday (January 16, 2004) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme with military rites by the Klemme Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Verner Emil Lau, the son of Emil and Alma Ella (Haberkamp) Lau, was born October 15, 1920, on a farm south of Klemme. He was confirmed at Immanuel Re-formed Church in Klemme and graduated from Klemme High School in 1938. After high school, he farmed with his father. From 1944 to 1946, Verner served his country in the U.S. Army during and after World War II. During this time he was in the 822nd Military Police, which was charged with maintaining law and order in occupied Berlin. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Klemme to farm with his father and brother. On June 4, 1958, he married Velma Larsen at the Titonka Methodist Church. To this union two daughters were born, Barbara and Debra.

Verner and Velma continued to farm the home place near Klemme until retiring from farming and moving into Garner in 1988. In August of 2002, they moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. His great joy in his life was his three grandchildren. Verner’s love of children was always evident as he played ball with his nieces and nephews and gave them rides on his horse.

Verner was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reform-ed Church in Garner, the Adam-Schaefer American Legion Post No. 625 in Klemme and the Klemme Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Velma, of Garner; two daughters, Barbara Burket and husband, Greg, of Minburn and Debra Dunn and husband, Jess, of Grimes; grandchildren, Mikaela Sue Dunn, Blake Ronald Dunn and Heidi Marie Burket; a brother, Paul Lau and wife, Phyllis, of Garner; a brother-in-law, Richard Happel of Alexander; a sister-in-law, Ramona Lau Schmidt and husband, Marvin, of Ventura; six nephews; and four nieces.

Iris was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Joice, to Ira Roath and Theresa (Tweed) Roath. Iris attended schools in Fertile and Joice, and after graduation from High School she furthered her education as a graduate of Hamilton College in Mason City.

Iris married Harris DeWall on October 22, 1949, at Bethel Lutheran Church near Joice. They were married for 49 years. They had no children but dearly loved her nieces and nephews. She and Harris farmed near Clear Lake for 33 years. She was a member of the Busy Bee Club for many years. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

They moved to Mason City in 1993. While living in Mason City she attended the First Covenant Church.

After the death of her husband, she moved to the Willows in Mason City in 1999. She and Harris spent 17 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.

She is survived by two brothers, Boyd Roath and his wife, Grace, and Gary Roath and his wife, Alice all of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harris DeWall; her parents; brother, Dewane Roath, and his wife, Myreen.

Randall “Randy” Lee Hoy was born November 9, 1954 in Charles City, the son of Donald, Sr., and Dorothy (Nordman) Hoy. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1974, and on July 13, 1974, he was united in marriage to Gayle Tack at the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd.

Randy worked for Gil White Plumbing and Heating, and later for Iowa Mold Tooling Co. in Garner as a certified welder, and also in the research and development department. In 1988, Randy started Hoy’s Tin Shed in Floyd. Early on Randy refinished furniture and then worked mainly on the crafts circuit with his woodworking for the past 15 years.

Randy was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, and was a past member of the Floyd Lion’s Club.

Randy enjoyed woodworking and camping trips with his family, and in his younger years enjoyed snowmobiling and was proud of restoring his 1969 Cougar.

Randy always loved to share his new projects with his family, and the time spent with them and his dog, Lucy, were always most important.

Randy is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Gayle of Floyd; his son Eric (Michelle) Hoy of Ionia; his daughter, Melinda Hoy and friend, Jamie Cook, of Floyd; his son, Philip Hoy and friend, Jessica Ayers, of Floyd; his brothers, Dennis (Gretchen) Hoy of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Don (Jackie) Hoy, Jr., of Charles City; his parents-in-law, Galen and Fern Tack of Floyd; his sisters-in-law, Jan (Ron) Tjaden of Floyd and Donna (Allen) Ricks of Hudson; and his nieces and nephews, Kira, Daniel, and Kevin Hoy of Grand Prairie, Texas, Shannon Hoy of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Hoy of Port Orchard, Wash., Kelly Caster and family of Charles City, Renee (Scott) Kramer and family of Garner, and Sarah Ricks of Des Moines; and his special dog companion, Lucy.

FERTILE — Michael Donavan Haugen, age 59, of Fertile, passed away on Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Private family services were held at Mittelstadt Funeral Home with burial taking place at Grant Center Cemetery near Fertile.

Michael Donavan Haugen was born to Willie and Geneva (Tiegen) Haugen on Dec. 26, 1944, in Mason City.

Michael grew up on his family’s farm south of Fertile. He attended Fertile Schools. As a young man, he helped his father on the farm and later went on to be a heavy equipment operator. After his father passed away, he took over the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Debbie K. Zobel on December 31, 1972. Of this union, they were blessed with two children, Darcy Marie (Haugen) VanHorn and William Maynard Haugen.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Debbie, and son, William both of Fertile; his daughter, Darcy and her husband, Buck; four grandchildren, Marissa, Brianna, Noah and Cade, all of Clear Lake; brother-in-law and cousin Joe Johnson of Fertile; sisters-in-law, Jane Johnson and Patty Zobel both of Fertile, and Bernice Haugen of Forest City; five nephews, Jasen Johnson, Steve Haugen, Scott Haugen, John Haugen and Jeff Haugen; two nieces, Joely Bruns and Justine Johnson, all of Fertile.

FOREST CITY — Anna A. Attig, age 91, of Forest City, formerly of Woden, died Saturday (January 17, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka, with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Anna A. Attig was born on a farm near Woden on August 22, 1912, the daughter of Ernest and Helene (Boyken) Senne. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka and was a lifetime member there. She received her education in rural school near her home.

On February 20, 1935, she married Clarence H. Attig. The couple made their home on a farm near Woden their entire married lives.

Anna was active in her community, serving as a 4-H leader and was involved with the PTA in the school.

She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and loved to crochet, making afghans and quilts for family and friends. She was active in circle at Immanuel Lutheran and treasured time celebrating with her friends in her Birthday Club.

She liked watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren compete in sporting events and enjoyed her favorite teams play basketball and baseball on television.

Clarence passed away in 1989 and Anna remained on the farm until moving to her home in Forest City in 1992. Due to failing health, she entered the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in September of 2001.

She died there on January 17, 2004, at the age of 91 years.

Anna is survived by her daughter, Joyce Goranson of Forest City; two granddaughters, Catherine Goranson of Buffalo, Minn. and Roberta Nolton and husband, Tom, of Forest City; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah and Morgan. Also surviving is a sister, Helena Buss of Buffalo Center; and three sisters-in-law, Bettye Senne of Britt, Gertrude Richter and Lila Attig, both of Titonka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, in 1989; a sister, Louise DeWaard; three brothers, Dick, George and Ernest Senne; a son-in-law, Lester Goranson; and a grandson, Terry Goranson.

Rosa was born October 14, 1943, to Erwin and Cornellia (Lang) Siewertsen at Mason City. Rosa graduated from Charles City High School and Hamilton Business College (data processing) in Mason City.

On October 19, 1964, Rosa was united in marriage to John Bass at Clarksville. John passed away on January 5, 1989.

Rosa worked at Comp Systems and belonged to their union for fifteen years, retiring in the fall of 2003. Rosa lived in the Floyd and Chickasaw county areas since 1968.

Lola Mae, the daughter of Carl and Myrtle (Waitman) Heiland, was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Cono Township in Buchanan County, Iowa. She attended country school, the same school as her father, until the eighth grade, she then attended Rowley High School, graduating in 1929. She then received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College. While in college she met her future husband, Paul Castle. After college she taught high school home economics in Ridgeway and Ventura. She married Paul on June 13, 1934, in Crown Point, Indiana. The couple moved to Plymouth and Reinbeck before moving to Clear Lake in 1949, where they owned and operated P.T. Castle Cap & Gown Company until Paul’s death.

Lola Mae was a member of the following: Christian Church of Clear Lake, where she served as a deaconess and was an active member of the C.W.F., the church Bible Club, the Mothers Study Club, the Clear Lake Women’s Club, where she was a past president, and the Wa-Tan-Ye Club. She was also a member of the Phi Chi Delta Sorority and the Ellen H. Richards Club of Cedar Falls.

Lola Mae is survived by her children, Thomas Castle of Mason City, Janet M. Castle Lowman and her husband, Gary of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Jonathan (Gina) Castle, Tammy (Anthony) Walsh, Christopher (Maria) Bremseth and Carrie Bremseth; and four great grandchildren, Paul and Rachel Castle and Hannah and Leah Walsh.

CLEAR LAKE — Fae Marie Gabrielson, 95, of Clear Lake, formerly of the Des Moines area, died Sunday (January 18, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

According to her wishes and to further the advancement of medical science to eradicate diseases, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment in the Lincoln Cemetery in Polk City, Iowa.

The family of Fae Marie Gabrielson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Oakwood Care Center in her memory.

Fae Gabrielson was born on November 30, 1908, in rural Grimes, Iowa, the daughter of Stephen and Essie (Harvey) Cunningham. She attended and received her education in the Johnston, Iowa, school system where she graduated. Fae furthered her education by attending college and receiving her teacher certificate. After completing her education, she taught school in the rural Northern Lights School and also taught in Clive. The family also lived in Des Moines, and Ames, and after her husband’s death, Fae moved to Mound, Minnesota, before living her last remaining years in Clear Lake.

She was united in marriage to John “Jack” Gabrielson. He preceded her in death.

She enjoyed traveling, fishing and dancing with her husband, Jack, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, John “Bob” Gabrielson of Clear Lake, Don Gabrielson and his wife, Dee, of Richardson, Texas, and Jim Gabrielson and his wife, Jo, of Hanover, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Dirk Gabrielson and his wife Laura, Shawn, Barry, and Amy Gabrielson, Christy Saville, Kathy Ricker and her husband Jeff, Karen Gabrielson, Eric Gabrielson and his wife, Donna, Linda Vaage and her husband, Randy, Lance Gabrielson and his wife, Tami, and Lonnie Gabrielson; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, June McKinley of Ankeny, and Mavis Kingsbury of Ames, as well as other relatives and friends.

Edna Viola, the daughter of Hero (Hix) and Anna Schulte Frohling was born October 23, 1918, in Alexander, Iowa. Edna grew up in the Alexander area where she attended school and graduated from Alexander High School in 1936. After high school Edna worked for a time cleaning and cooking for local farmers. Edna then attended and graduated from La’James Beauty School in Mason City.

Edna was united in marriage to Leroy Green on October 8, 1945, in Hot Springs, Ark. The couple made their home on a farm near Belmond and later moved into Belmond. Edna was a housewife and mother and operated a beauty salon in her home.

Edna enjoyed fishing, golfing and crochet.

Edna was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond. She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Edna volunteered for the Belmond Health Care Center and Belmond Community Chest. She belonged to the Belmond Country Club.

Edna is survived by a daughter, Lynne Ludens and husband, Steve, of St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Paul and wife, Pam, of Storm Lake; three grandchildren, Cheryl Smit and husband David of Lexington, Ky., Jonathan and Ellie; sisters-in-law, Deloris Robbins of Goodell, Marcella Cunningham and husband, Harold, of Goodell, and Betty Barkema and husband, Kurt Ahlstrom, of Belmond.

She was preceded in death, by her parents; husband, Roy; and two sisters, Sylvia and Magdalene.

Frances Irene Ramsey was born August 29, 1913, the daughter of Milton and Elsie E. (Whitten) Ramsey in Belmond. Frances attended school in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1931. Frances was united in marriage to W.E. “Chris” Lewis on November 14, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn. Frances was a longtime and faithful member of First United Methodist Church. She was formerly active in the Grandmothers Club, Moose Lodge and a volunteer for the North Iowa Medical Center. In 1972 Frances graduated from North Iowa Area Community College.

Frances was a wonderful grandmother and will be truly missed by her family. You could not have asked for a better grandma.

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral services for Cleland Jay Maxson, 94, of Port Charles Assisted Living, Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Charles City with Pastor Ruth Yeaton officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, and will continue Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Cleland Jay Maxson was born May 10, 1909, in Union Township, Floyd County a son of Verne and Hattie (Kennedy) Maxson, and died Saturday (January 17, 2004) at Port Charles in Charles City.

He received his education from the Marble Rock High School graduating in 1926, and attended Iowa State University at Ames. Cleland farmed North of Marble Rock. On January 1, 1942, he married Eunice Nash, who preceded him in death on August 26, 1973. That same year he moved into Marble Rock to care for his mother.

On August 9, 1978, he married Coral Green Cross. They lived in Marble Rock and were faithful members of the Bethel Baptist Church there until it closed in 1983. They attended the First Baptist Church where Cleland was a member, and the Christian Missionary Alliance Church both in Charles City. In March of 2001, Cleland and Cora moved to Port Charles where Cora preceded him in death on November 4, 2001.

Cleland loved to sing and play hymns on the organ and harmonica. He was an example of Christian brotherhood to all who knew him. He read his Bible regularly, and truly believed in and worshiped his Savior.

His is survived by his brother Roy of Indianapolis, Ind.; step-daughter, Patricia Barton of Depere, Wisc.; step- grandson, Shawn Denny of Minneapolis; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Cleland was also preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Darrell.

CHARLES CITY — Gerald L. Warrington, 81, passed away late Friday evening (Jan. 16, 2004) in Charles City.

Gerald was born September 13, 1922, at Lyle, Minn., the son of Clifford “Lavern” and Mabel (Basford) Warrington. Gerald moved to Kensett at the age of five and a half after his mother’s death. He was then raised by his aunt, attending and graduating from high school there.

When returning to Iowa after serving in the Navy during World War II he was united in marriage to Irma Hoblit on May 24, 1944, in rural Little Cedar, Iowa. Irma passed away on June 13, 1999.

Gerald was an auto parts manager for 42 years at Standard Battery Electric from 1950-1992. He belonged to the American Legion and lived in Charles City for 58 years.

On July 15, 2000, Gerald and Anna were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Survivors include his wife Anna; two sons, Jerry Lynn (Cheryl) Warrington, Osage, Donald Edward (Rebecca) Warrington,Waverly; one daughter, Susan Kaye (Lynn) Spurbeck, Forest City; four stepsons, Timothy (Debra) Warrington, Cincinnati,Ohio, Gerald Lee (Jennifer) Warrington, Lawrenceburg, Ind., Kendall R. Clara Irene Gerdes, the daughter of Albert and Adele “Delia” Boecker (Gerdes) was born June 19, 1917, on a farm in Linden Township, Winnebago County.

She graduated from Forest City High School. Clara worked for the Gordon Field family after the mother died taking care of the three children, Gladys, Robert and Lois. When Clara’s mother became ill, she cared for her until her death in 1949.

After her mother’s death, Clara worked at Smith’s Grocery Store and managed the Variety Store in Woden. She later purchased the Variety Store and operated it until she retired in 1981.

She enjoyed traveling and visited all 48 contiguous states, England, Germany, the Holy Land and Mexico.

She entered the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center in July of 2002 and moved to Westview Care Center in Britt in August of 2003.

Clara was an active lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden where she was superintendent and taught beginners Sunday school for almost 50 years. She was also the Junior Mission Band Leader for many years.

She was an active member of the Hancock County Historical Society, Hancock County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Women’s Federated Club in Woden holding many offices in the local and county club.

She belonged to the Woden Senior Citizens holding many offices, including president, and was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year for her volunteer work.

Clara played a very active part in planning the Woden Diamond Jubilee in 1974. She was always interested in the betterment of Woden.

She is survived by two sisters, Leora Ree of Buffalo Center, and Esther Denney and husband, Don, of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Eddie Nauman of George, Iowa; five nieces and nephews and their families; and her extended family, Gladys Helstad and husband, Lowell, of Minneapolis, Robert Field and wife, Beverly, of Albert Lea, Minn. and Lois Pearson of Minneapolis.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alma Goeddel and Helene Nauman, and a brother, Ed Gerdes.

MASON CITY — Helen A. Hagedorn, 102, of Mason City, passed away on Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004) at Emanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, Minn. following a short illness.

Funeral services for Helen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave. with Pastor Joel Dahlen and the Rev. Nancy Drier officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Oneida Cemetery in Clutier.

Helen was born Oct. 20, 1910, in Algona, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Lilly and Emma Brittanica Wheat Lilly. Helen attended school and graduated from high school in Britt. She later attended Grinnell College in Grinnell and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1923.

On Aug. 24, 1923, she married Ervin L. Hagedorn. They farmed in the Clutier, Iowa, area and in 1936 moved to a farm near Garwin, Iowa.

Helen and Ervin were charter members of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Traer.

She taught rural school in the area and gave piano lessons for many years.

She was a 4-H leader and played the piano for contests, choirs, weddings and funerals. She attended many Elderhostels and loved to sew and crochet.

In 1965, Helen and Ervin retired and moved to Mason City. After moving to the Mason City area, they became active members of Our Saviur’s Lutheran Church which remained Helen’s home church until her death.

She belonged to the Altar Guild and to the Quilter’s Club at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

Helen lived at Shalom Towers and at Willow Pointe Assisted Living before moving to Mankato in April of 2003.

She resided at the Alterra Sterling House in Mankato and enjoyed being closer to her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by four children, Margaret Johnson of Rogers, Ark., Richard Hagedorn and wife, Joan, of Placentia, Calif., Roger Hagedorn, of Belle Vista, Ark., and Mary Lou Haldorson and husband, Nordeene, of Mankato, Minn.;11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Ervin L. Hagedorn.

FOREST CITY — Alice E. Kingland, 90, of Forest City, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Alice E. Kingland was born in Wadena, Minn. on June 12, 1913, the daughter of Edmond and Celia (Olson) Holland. She received her elementary education in Sebeka, Minn. She later attended the Oakgrove Lutheran Academy in Fargo, N.D., and continued her education at the Conservatory of Music in Bemidji, Minn.

She married Oral Kingland on June 10, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Forest City their entire married lives.

The couple attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Forest City until 1960, when they joined Winnebago Lutheran Church. Alice was director of music there for many years and was active in Ladies Aid and Martha Circle.

Alice shared her musical talents in many ways: teaching piano, directing the church choir and doing solo work for funerals and weddings.

She loved flowers, tended a big garden and was a member of the Fertile Garden Club. Alice was a charter member of the OAO Club.

Family was very important to her. She cared for her siblings after their parents died and she treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Her children remember her as a wonderful cook and innovative baker.

The couple retired from farming and moved to Forest City in 1996.

Alice is survived by her husband, Oral, of Forest City and four children: Judy Belmore and husband, Jon, of Bloomington, Minn.; Joel Kingland and wife, Elaine, of Forest City; Tom Kingland and wife, Sheryl, of Lake Mills, and Mark Kingland and wife, Brenda, of Forest City; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also, two sisters, Hilda Barnes of Salem, Ore. and Geneva Morstad of Forest City, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Gustav and Howard Holland and two sisters, Viola Nydahl and Violet Hanson.

She had done housekeeping at the Hill Motel in Belmond for many years.

Those who knew Jessie will especially remember her for her attention to family history and for her love of the outdoors and nature.

Jessie is survived by her sisters, Mildred Vestweber and Arlene Bohning, both of Belmond, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Willamine Smith, and her brothers, Benjamin and Andrew Loats.

CLEAR LAKE — Ella Martha Morrison, 97, of 625 14th Ave. N., Clear Lake, passed away Sunday (Jan. 18, 2004) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Ella was born Sept. 21, 1906, in Fessenden, N.D. the daughter of Peter and Katrina (Kemmer) Klindworth.

Ella married Dow A. Morrison, Feb. 27, 1928, at St. Paul, Minn.

Ella designed hats for a millenary shop in St. Paul and then worked as seamstress for Dayton’s Department Store until retiring.

Ella moved to Clear Lake in March of 2000. She enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening.

Ella is survived by her children, James Morrison and his wife, Ophelia “Babe” of Clear Lake; Lorena K. Johnson and her husband, Robert, of San Diego, Calif.; and Joseph Morrision and his wife, Michelle “Mike” of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

OXLEY, Ark. — Edward Elmer Wyborny, 92, of rural Oxley, Ark. died Sunday (Jan. 18, 2004) in Clinton, Ark. He was born Nov. 29, 1911 in Worth County, Iowa, the son of the late Edward Franklin and Lulu Witham Wyborny.

He was preceded in death by his wife Inez, and by three brothers, Morris, Roy, and Harold, and by two grandchildren.

He worked on farms in the early 1930s and later spent most of his working life as a mechanic, working on General Motors and Chrysler motor cars. He retired in 1974 as a diesel truck mechanic in San Diego, Calif.

He became a General Class amateur radio operator in 1960 and enjoyed that hobby during his retirement years.

Survivors include a brother, Kenneth and his wife, Edna, of Mabanks, Texas; a brother, Donald and his wife, Lucille, of Mountain Home, Ark.; six children, Richard and his wife Gloria of Charles City, Raymond and his wife Wendy of El Cajon, Calif., Elton and his wife Karen of Scotland, Ark., June and her husband Dennis Dodd of Clear Lake, Kathy and her husband, Don Meinholz of Juneau, Wis., and Carol Wyborny of Stoughton, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Rosa was born Oct. 14, 1943, to Erwin and Cornellia (Lang) Siewertsen at Mason City. Rosa graduated from Charles City High School and Hamilton Business College (data processing) in Mason City.

On Oct. 19, 1964, Rosa was united in marriage to John Bass at Clarksville. John passed away Jan. 5, 1989.

Rosa worked at Comp Systems and belonged to their union for fifteen years, retiring in the fall of 2003. Rosa lived in the Floyd and Chickasaw County area since 1968.

GERALD L. WARRINGTON


CHARLES CITY— Gerald L. Warrington, 81, passed away late Friday evening (January 16, 2004) in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.Wednesday at New Life Community Church, 1960 Gilbert St., Charles City, with the Rev. Michael McAbee officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunnyside Funeral Home and on Wednesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gerald was born September 13, 1922, at Lyle, Minn., the son of Clifford “Lavern” and Mabel (Basford) Warrington. Gerald moved to Kensett at the age of five and a half after his mother’s death. He was then raised by his aunt, attending and graduating from high school in Kensett.

When returning to Iowa after serving in the Navy during World War II, he was united in marriage to Irma Hoblit on May 24, 1944, in rural Little Cedar, Iowa. Irma passed away June 13, 1999.

Gerald was an auto parts manager for 42 years at Standard Battery Electric from 1950 to 1992. He belonged to The American Legion and lived in Charles City for 58 years.

On July 15, 2000, Gerald and Anna were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Survivors include his wife Anna; two sons, Jerry Lynn (Cheryl) Warrington, Osage, Donald Edward (Rebecca) Warrington,Waverly; one daughter, Susan Kaye (Lynn) Spurbeck, Forest City; four stepsons, Timothy (Debra) Warrington, Cincinnati,Ohio, Gerald Lee (Jennifer) Warrington, Lawrenceburg, Ind., Kendall R. (Sarah) Warrington,West Harrison, Ind., Len Warrington, Cincinnati, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Patricia (Perry) Vaught, Lawrenceburg, Ind.; one sister, Margaret Ebling, Mason City; three sisters-in-law, Francis Hundt, Charles City, Ona Maxwell, Charles City, Ida (Jack) Schloemer, Nashua; six grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one step-greatgrandchild.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two sisters, Marilyn Erbe and Jacquelyn, in infancy; three brothers, Cliff, Ken and Orville.

OSAGE — Lionel W. Olson, 77, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 19, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

THORNTON — Funeral services for Lael Mae Vestweber will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home.

Lael M. Vestweber was born Oct. 6, 1933, at Belmond, a daughter of Henry and Pearl (LaRue) Vestweber. She lived her life with her parents on farms in the north Iowa area until 1942 when they bought and moved to the family farm six miles north of Thornton. She attended Union Township Country School.

In 1967, Lael moved into Thornton with her parents and sister Mary. In 2002, she moved to Clear Lake and has spent the last year in the Westview Nursing Home in Britt.

Lael enjoyed playing cards, little kittens and puppies and birds, especially cardinals. She also enjoyed her nieces, nephews, great-niece and great-nephews.

She enjoyed baking cookies and doing crafts with her special friends at the care center.

Lael died Saturday (Jan. 17, 2004) at the Westview Nursing Home, she was 70 years old.

Survivors include her brother, David Sr. (Sharon) Vestweber, of Clear Lake; sister, Mary (Dean) Lauen, of Clear Lake; six nephews and nieces, David Jr. (Patti) Vestweber, Dianna (Chris) Nelson, Scott Vestweber, Shari Vestweber, Todd Lauen, and Anne Marie Lauen; five great-nephews and great-niece: Joshua and James Vestweber; Andrew, Nicholas, Madelynn and Benjamin Nelson; and special friend: Margaret Best.

Lael is preceded in death by her parents and twin sister, Gail, in childhood.

HAMPTON — Marjorie B. Wohlford, 81, of Hampton, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 2004) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Geneva United Methodist Church in Geneva, with the Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Lindenwood Cemetery in rural Geneva.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
