BARBARA (BOYD) BOEHMER


CHARLES CITY — Barbara (Boyd) Boehmer, 62, a resident of Olympia, Wash., died Saturday (Jan. 31, 2004) at her home.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Barb Boehmer was born on Jan. 11, 1942, to Kenneth and Bernice Boyd.

She graduated from Charles City High School in 1960.

On Nov. 25. 1982, Barb was united in marriage to Norb Boehmer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

They lived in Des Moines, where Barb was employed by the State of Iowa, Department of Revenue and the Department of Agriculture for 14 years.

In the spring of 1981, they moved to Salem Ore., where she worked for State Farm Insurance, transferring to Olympia in 1995.

Barb volunteered with the Redeemer Lutheran Church Youth Group and the McKay High School Marching Band. She had many favorite pastimes including reading and traveling.

Living family members include her husband, Norb Boehmer of Olympia, Wash.; and two children, Brent Boeh-mer of Olympia, Wash., and Kenda Shuman and her husband, Ben, of Portland, Ore.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat and Bill Smith of Des Moines, Marilyn and Dean Good of Council Bluffs, Monita and Russ Engsler, of Garner, Margie and Cliff Kolthoff, of Denver, Iowa, Dan and Jan Boehmer of Janesville, Minn., and Dave and Joyce Boehmer of Charles City; aunts and uncles, Duane and Genny Boyd of Charles City, Lester and Doris Marth of Mason City; and 25 nieces and nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents.

WILBUR WINTERTON


ST. ANSGAR — Wilbur Winterton, 98, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. on Friday and continues until service time at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Wilbur was born on May 22, 1905, in Thor, Iowa, the son of George and Eda (Flemmig) Winterton. He grew up in and attended school in the Thor and Forest City areas.

He farmed in the Grafton and St. Ansgar areas. He was also involved in trucking and agri products.

He served in the U. S. Army at Camp Carson, Colo., from 1942 to 1943.

He retired in 1970, moving to St. Ansgar, where he resid-ed until entering the nursing home the last two months. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mayme Lovik and Ester Watton; three brothers, Alvie, Earl and Merle.

Wilbur is survived by three sisters, Vernice Wetzel of St. Ansgar, Laura Mostek of Mitchell, and Marcella Ohnemus of Fall Creek, Wis.; also many nieces and nephews.

WAYNE D. PATTON


ROCKWELL — Wayne D. Patton, 90, of 12201 Lark Ave., Rockwell, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 24, 2004) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Mercy Cancer Center.

Wayne was born June 14, 1913, at Mason City, the son of Dan and Etta Patton.

Wayne attended rural Clear Lake School. He farm-ed with his father south of Clear Lake and continued to farm north of Burchinal on the Patton farm, which is close to being a century farm.

Wayne enjoyed his family, going to the movies on Saturdays, and reading the newspaper.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church at Mason City.

Wayne is survived by his sister, Fayne Huntley of Mason City; half sister, Betty Gilbert of Mt Pleasant; four nephews, Ken Huntley and his wife, Bettie, of Waterloo, Keith Huntley and his fiancee, Gloria, of Clear Lake, Ron Huntley of Clear Lake, Wayne Huntley and his wife, Marge, of Rockwell; and many great-nieces and nephews.

His parents and an infant sister, preceded him in death.

ROBERT F. MCSWEENEY


CEDAR FALLS — Robert F. McSweeney, 85, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Osage and Fort Dodge, died of heart failure Friday (Feb. 20, 2004) at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Liberty Township, Mitchell County, the son of Stewart Cornelius and Charlotte Agnes (McGrane) McSweeney.

Robert married Maxine Penney on Nov. 25, 1936 at Cresco, Iowa.

He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre from 1943 to 1945.

Robert farmed until 1962, when they moved to Fort Dodge where he was employ-ed at Coats Manufacturing and then Standard Engineering, until retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine McSweeney, of Cedar Falls; his daughter, Kay McSweeney, also of Cedar Falls; his grandson, Michael Higgins of Indianapolis, Ind.; his brother, Richard (Jan) McSweeney of Hampton; and his sister, Phyllis Schrock of Charles City.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter in infancy, one brother and four sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, both in Osage.

There will be a fellowship at the VFW in Osage following the memorial service.

A memorial fund will be established.

HAMPTON — Nick Clemens, 48, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 2004) at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton.

FOREST CITY — Donald A. Bredeson, 71, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Saturday.

Donald A. Bredeson was born in Lake Mills on June 4, 1932, the son of Arthur and Gladys (Howard) Bredeson.

He received his education in Forest City and entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 7, 1949. He served tours of duty in Korea, Okinawa and Germany.

He taught ROTC at the Valley Forge Military Academy for three years and did two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He retired from active military duty on May 31, 1971. He worked for 12 years at Armor Swift-Eckrich in Britt.

On Aug. 13, 1965, he married Wanda Jensen in Tacoma, Wash.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who treasured time spent with his family.

He was an avid reader, and loved to bowl with his friends and go fishing. He had an extensive pen collection from all over the world, enjoyed music and dancing, and spent many hours bird-watching and building birdhouses.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the VFW, the VVA and the DAV.

Don is survived by his wife, Wanda Bredeson, of Forest City, and his children and their spouses: Lorry Jo (John) Zasada of Green Bay, Wis., Jeffery (Denise) Bredeson of Fertile, and Dawn (Doug) Day of Forest City; a foster daughter, Jackie (Tracy) Levendusky of Osage; 10 grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy and Jonathan Zasada, Logan and Jon Brede-son, Tonya and Corey Phelps and Lindsi, Emili and Dustin Day; seven great-grandchildren, Cody, Nathan, Lucas, Dakota and Gage Zasada, Kaleb Wasick and Benjamin Cook; and three foster grandchildren, Tate, Wade and Joy Levendusky. Also two brothers, Marshall (Sherry) Bredeson of Leland, and Dale Bredeson of Estherville; two brothers- in-law, Dean (Bev) Jensen of Burnsville, Minn., and Jerry (Stella) Jensen of Abilene, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Iola (Ray) Sunie of Hamilton, Ala., and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Logan and Lucille Jensen; sister-in-law, Donna Bredeson, and several uncles and aunts.

DR. GUIDO J. SARTOR


MASON CITY — Dr. Guido J. Sartor, long-time pediatrician in Mason City and partner in the Park Clinic from 1941 to his retirement in 1976, died Feb. 23, 2004, in Bettendorf. He had lived in Mason City from 1941 through 2003.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis A. Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m.

The family requests memorials be given to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City for medical and education purposes in memory of Dr. Sartor.

Dr. Guido Joseph Romanus Wolfgang Adrian Sartor was born May 25, 1906, to Dr. Pierre and Mary Magdalen (Winandy) Sartor at Bancroft.

He graduated from Titonka High School in 1923. He at-tended Loras College for two years in Dubuque, and thereafter was a teacher in the Kossuth County School System for six years.

In 1930, he began his pre-medical education at the University of Iowa.

He was married to Luella Recker of Buffalo Center on Dec. 30, 1930.

In 1932, he entered the University of Iowa Medical College and graduated in 1936.

He served an internship at University of Iowa Hospitals for one year.

He was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa Professional Fraternity at the University of Iowa for four years.

Thereafter, over a period of four years beginning in 1937, he held various post-graduate pediatric training and teaching positions at the University of Chicago Hospitals and on the Medical College faculty.

He also conducted research on the tolerance of physical exercise in adolescents.

He served as chief resident of Newborn Services of Chicago Lying-In Hospital. He concluded his residency in pediatrics as chief resident.

During the two years previous to coming to Mason City in 1941, he served on the pediatric Faculty of the College of Medicine of the University of Chicago as instructor in pediatrics.

During this period of four years, 1937-1941, he served at the following institutions associated with the University of Chicago: Bobs Roberts Memorial Hospital for Children, Orthogenic School for Nervous Diseases of Children, La Rabida Childrens Research Center, Municipal Contagious Hospital of Chicago, Country Home for Convalescent Children, and Neuropediatric Service of Childrens Memorial Hospital.

He was appointed to pediatric faculty instructor, College of Medicine, University of Chicago, 1940-41. When the pediatrician position open-ed in Mason City, he asked to be released from his contract and they moved to Mason City.

In 1941, he began practice of pediatrics as a partner of Park Clinic, Mason City, where he practiced his specialty for 35 years until his retirement in 1976.

Dr. William Swanson was a close friend for many years, having lived together at the Alpha Kappa Kappa fraternity for four years at the University of Iowa and practicing together at Park Clinic for 35 years.

He was active in profession-al medical organizations throughout his career.

He was an active staff mem-ber of both Park Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, pediatric sections. He served on numerous hospital and staff committees of both hospitals.

He was a member of Cerro Gordo County Medical Society and served a year as its president.

He was a member of the Iowa Pediatric Society and served as its president in 1968.

He was an associate member of the Iowa Academy of Pediatrics. He was a long-time delegate to the Iowa Medical Society of which he served as chairman of the Pediatric Section and also a term as chairman of the Program Committee, Pediatric Section.

He was a member of the American Medical Association.

In 1942, he attended a course given at the University of Minnesota at the Sister Kenny Institute for polio-myelitis. This qualified him as a certified Kenny polio technician at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

A special polio respirator was available in the unit for bulbar polio patients with respiratory paralysis.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Third Degree Knights of Columbus and the Elks.

Upon his move to Bettendorf in November 2003, he discovered his primary care physician, Dr. Mark Hermanson, had been his patient at birth in Mason City many years before.

Survivors include three daughters, Celeste Donna Roth (John) of LeClaire; Mary Beth Obermeyer (Thomas) of Minneapolis, and Julie Beckman (David) of Burlington; one son, Robert Pierre Sartor (Nam), of Bettendorf; a sister, Mercedes; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Luella Recker Sartor; his parents, Mary Magdalen (Winandy) and Dr. Pierre Sartor; three sisters, Mary Catherine, Magdalen and Alice; brother, Anthony, and grandson, Mark Obermeyer.

HAMPTON — Leola Mae Roegner, 87, of Hampton, formerly of Geneva, died Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004) at Frank-lin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Geneva United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Lindenwood Cemetery in rural Geneva.

Visitation will be held from 1 go 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

She was born on March 11, 1916, in Hansell, Iowa, a daughter of John H. and Bertha (Wiener) Dohlman.

She attended the Hansell Consolidated Schools.

She was united in marriage to Lester R. Roegner at the Geneva Methodist Parsonage.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church in Geneva.

She was known as Mrs. Clean. She enjoyed cleaning, flowers, outside work, was a farmhand with her husband and she raised chickens on the farm. She enjoyed embroidering and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy, and husband, Bob Taylor, of Hampton; daughter, Ruby VanGerpen, of Hampton; daughter, Lois Bittner, of Blue Grass; daughter, Judy, and husband, Rich Heit-land, of Geneva; daughter, Jeanne, and husband, Darren Chipp, of Latimer; sister, Bertha, and husband, Bob Woods, of Iowa Falls; brothers, Delos and wife, Alice Dohlman, of Hampton; sister, Helen O’Dea, of Hampton; brother, Dallas Dohlman, of Hampton; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, one brother and one son-in-law.

CLEAR LAKE — Karen Jo Weiland, 48, a resident of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004) at her residence in Clear Lake.

MASON CITY — Helen E. Buehler Broers, 87, of 14862 200th St., Mason City, died Wednesday evening (Feb. 25, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul C. Nelson officiating. Her final place of rest will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Glen A. Ryan was born March 11, 1923 in Rowan, a son of James Edward and Minnie (Ehler) Ryan.

He was educated in the Rowan Schools.

He was united in marriage to Ardeth Cooper on Sept. 20, 1947, in Hampton.

In his early years, he farmed and then was a truck driver.

He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church.

Glen was a very proud 30-year member of the Old Timers AA, and loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed chuckwagon races, tractor pulls and football.

Survivors include a son, Ron and wife, Margo Ryan, of Hansell; daughter, Linda and husband, Jay Brower, of Hampton; daughter, Janan Shillington, of Iowa Falls; daughter, Colleen and husband, Steve Simons, of Hampton; daughter, Donna and husband, Mike Dallwitz, of St. Louis, Mo.; brother, Edward and wife, Marge Ryan, of Kanawha; twin sister Elsie and husband, Wilbur Schroeder, of Dows; sister, Jean Walrod, of Belmond, and sister, Darlene Aldrich, of Belmond, and 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson, Jonathan; two sisters, Ethel and Alice, and three brothers, Nudge, Toots and Bubby.

MASON CITY — Dean I. Clausen, 77, of 22 Clover Lane, Mason City, died Wednesday morning (Feb. 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Dean was born on May 7, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Earl and Elizabeth “Evans” Clausen. He was one of five children.

He graduated from Mason City High School.

While in school, he worked for J.B. Decker and Sons.

Dean served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, when he was honorably discharged.

He returned to Mason City and worked for Garrison Stone in Clear Lake and Red Dot Potato Chips.

On Jan. 25, 1947, Dean was united in marriage to Darlene Foss at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. To this union was born three children.

Dean finished his career working as a foot-board yardmaster for the Chicago-North Western railroad for 30 years until his retirement.

Dean loved to visit with anyone and everyone. He went shopping with his wife just to talk to strangers while she shopped. Darlene said, “He would talk to a post if it would answer back.” He en-joyed golfing and the camaraderie with his friends in Mason City and Biloxi, Miss., and was sad when his health forced him to quit.

Dean would often team up with his neighbor, Jo Pearce, to plan block parties and soup parties for the neighborhood.

His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. His trip to Phoenix for Thanksgiving was so meaningful because he had his three children together again.

Dean and Darlene were members of First United Methodist Church. He also was a life member of VFW and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

He could often be found at early-morning coffee at the Elks.

In his spare time, he loved woodworking and made items such as flag cases, cabinets, cedar chests, dressers, toy boxes and toys.

He also loved playing pool and Pinochle cards.

His love of golf brought an ace on hole No. 11 at Highland Golf Course on July 3, 1992.

One of his proudest moments was when he was presented his high school diploma along with other veterans of World War II on Dec. 7, 2000.

Those thankful in sharing Dean’s life include his wife of 57 years, Darlene; one daughter, Debra Waters, of Mason City; two sons, Rick and his wife, Mindy Clausen, of Phoenix, Ariz., Greg and his wife, Lynda Clausen, of Independence; five grandchildren, Julie and husband Mark Finch, Lisa Latham, Susan and husband Bret Lucas, Eric Clausen, and Holly Clausen; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Latham, Ricky Latham Jr., Morgan and Madison Finch, and William Lucas; three step-grandchildren, Robert, James and Chris Reid, and eight step-great-granchildren; two sisters, Ida Mary Sullivan, of Chicago, and Betty Arlene Jennings, of Morris Plains, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews along with a host of friends and other relatives.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Evelyn Clausen; one brother, Richard Clausen, and one grandson, Travis Dean Waters.

CLEAR LAKE — Karen Jo Weiland, 48, a resident of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, daughter, sister, and aunt to Klemme-area residents, died Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004) at her residence in Clear Lake.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Klemme United Methodist Church in Klemme, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Karen Jo Weiland was born May 27, 1955, at Britt, the daughter of Vernon and Elaine (Carlson) Weiland. At a young age she was diagnosed as being severely handicapped.

Karen began attending Happy Arc in Garner at the age of 12, a school which was structured for the disabled. She continued to attend there until age 21, when she started to go to the Day Activity Program at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.

In October 1980, Karen be-came a full-time resident of the Village and had lived there since.

Being the big sister in the family, Karen Jo always focused on keeping peace and harmony in the relationships that surrounded her life.

Though she was unable to speak clearly, her ability to communicate was excellent.

Karen Jo, “Jo-Jo” as her father called her, enjoyed going for rides with her father, activities that included her mother and siblings, and going for ice cream.

She liked to look at magazines and listen to music.

She looked forward to family gatherings, but was also very comfortable living at Opportunity Village with her adopted second family of wonderful caregivers and resident friends.

Karen Jo enjoyed activities sponsored through the Village such as shopping trips, going to the fair, and other activities.

Though her life may have not been normal in the day- to-day routine that most people take for granted, her life touched countless people through her warm smile, wonderful personality, and loving hugs.

She is survived by her mother, Elaine Weiland, of Klemme; sisters, Kathy and husband, Verlyn Olthoff, of Klemme, and Kay and husband, Joe Jackson, of New Baden, Mo.; brothers, Kenneth and wife, Donna, Weiland, and Kelly and wife, Deb, Weiland, all of Klemme; and nine nieces and nephews, Travis Olthoff, Brandon Weiland, Jared and Josh Jackson, K.C. Weiland, Jayme and husband, Eric Dougherty, Jennifer Olthoff, Katie Weiland, and Krystal Jackson.

Ella Norma Wahl was born in Hanlontown, April 8, 1919, the daughter of Halvor F. and Josephine (Roppe) Banken. Ella attended school and graduated in Iowa.

Ella was employed as a laborer of automotive filters for Fleetguard in Lake Mills for 20 years, retiring in 1981.

Ella enjoyed telling stories and jokes and she was a great one for pulling practical jokes on others.

She will be well remember-ed for being a fun and loving person.

Her interests included crochet and fishing.

She was a kind, patient, nurturing woman with a strong sense for family.

Ella regularly attended and was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton, and was active in the church’s annual fund- raiser of “Turkey Days.”

Those grateful for having the privilege of sharing in Ella’s life are her children, Roger (Margaret) Wahl of Gaston, S.C., Arthur Wahl of Mason City, Wayne Wahl of West Memphis, Ark., and Cheryl (Mike) McConnachie of Wood Lake, Texas; her 10 grandchildren, Alan, Mark, Tanya, Stacy, Carmen, Chris, Tara, Jennifer, Rachel and Jessica; and 13 great-grandchildren. Dorothy Viola Hobbs Krominga was born May 9, 1921, at rural Crystal Lake, to Earl and Alvina (Hansmeier) Hobbs.

She was baptized and confirmed in Crystal Lake. She graduated from Crystal Lake School.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Orville Gene Krominga on Sept. 23, 1944, in Mineral Wells, Texas.

They raised two sons, Vaughan and Kent. Dorothy spent her time at home caring for her boys when they were growing up.

Later she worked at the hardware store they owned and operated, as a school aide, a city hall aide and at the public library. She also sold Avon.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Dorothy loved gardening, cooking, reading and had a great love for her dogs and wildlife. She was always willing to help anyone in need.

Dorothy is survived by one son, Kent and his wife, Roxie, of Forest City; four granddaughters, Deanne Heidt and her husband, Steve, Regina Prentice and her husband, Tom, Marci Krominga, and Katie Frerichs and her husband, Dan, all of Titonka; six great-grandchildren, Jacob Prentice, Maya Prentice, Madison Krominga, Taylor Heidt, Cassidy Heidt and Cedric Frerichs; three brothers, Raymond (Marge) Hobbs of Britt, Clyde (Jerry) Hobbs of Crystal Lake, and James (Lilah) Hobbs, of Crystal Lake; one sister, Janice (Lyle) Doege of Woden; cousin, Calvin (Gerry) Hansmeier of Crystal Lake; many nieces, nephews and friends.

She graduated from Iowa State University with a de-gree in education.

Kathy was a favorite teacher at the St. Cloud Elementary School in Minnesota.

She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority at Iowa State University.

She enjoyed family, friends, St. Cloud State hockey, pets Rigley, Grendal, Pippy and Tinkerbell, hiking and time with her nephews.

George Lyle Johnson was born May 16, 1915, in Cerro Gordo County, to Mathias O. and Amanda E. (Brock) Johnson. He was the second son and one of five children born to his parents.

George attended country school in Cerro Gordo County.

George was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in September 1945 after serving his country overseas during World War II.

Some of George’s favorite leisure activities included gardening and dancing.

He was employed as a construction laborer and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

In January 1998, George made the Good Shepherd Health Center his home.

George will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

He is survived by his sister, Dorothy (Kirby) Payne of Lakewood, Colo.; his brother, Floyd (Elizabeth) Johnson of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

MASON CITY — Helen E. Buehler Broers, 87, of 14862 200th St., Mason City, passed peacefully into rest on Wed-nesday evening (Feb. 25, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City following a short illness.

Helen E. Buehler Broers was born Dec. 13, 1916, in Mason City, to John Jacob and Anna (Weiss) Buehler. She was the youngest child of five children born to her parents.

Helen grew up living on South Carolina Street. She assisted her mother cleaning various homes in Mason City, most notably the home of Dixie Wilson (the Wilson House). The women became close acquaintances.

Helen’s entire school years from kindergarten through college were in Mason City. Helen graduated from Mason City High School in 1934.

In 1937, Helen began dating her future husband, Harlan M. Broers. Two years later on Sept. 3, 1939, the couple was united in marriage at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.

They moved to the family farm south of Mason City and Helen became a busy housewife.

Helen and Harlan became the proud parents of two sons, Michael and Jon, and enjoyed traveling together to various vacation spots in Canada and across the United States.

Helen was active in many circles at St. James Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong member.

She was involved in num-erous memberships, such as TOPS, Bath Farm Women, Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Kinney-Lindstrum Pioneer Museum and a variety of other community organizations.

In 1963, Helen graduated from Mason City Junior College with a degree as an LPN. Her class was the first to graduate from the LPN program at the college.

Helen continued to serve her community for 25 years as a nurse at Park and North Iowa Hospitals.

Following retirement, Helen volunteered her time at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She thoroughly enjoyed attending grand openings and community and civic events in Mason City.

Helen was a devoted wife and nurturing mother. Her family was extremely important to her. Her sons claim that Helen made great chocolate cakes, German coffee cakes and red cabbage.

Helen treasured preparing for Christmas. Her family and friends fondly remember her baking, sharing and donating to many organizations, and her well-known German Stollen (bread) during the holiday.

Some of Helen’s favorite leisure activities and interests included cooking family meals, mowing her own lawn, reading the newspaper, camping and spending time with her entire family. She traveled to her youngest granddaughter Erin’s wedding in Illinois in September 2002, her last trip out of state.

In November 2003, Helen moved to Mason City from the farm after suffering a broken hip.

Helen will be missed dearly by all who have shared in her life.

Velva Mae, the daughter of Harry and Eda (Arthur) Waters, was born May 10, 1929, in Alta Vista. She lived in Alta Vista until the age of 5 and then moved with her family to Marble Rock. She received her education from Marble Rock Consolidated School, graduating in 1946. She then attended Cornell College.

She began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Charles City while still taking summer classes.

She was united in marriage to John Brown on Oct. 19, 1952, in Osage, and to this union three sons were born, David, Steven, and Mike.

In 1965, Velva moved to Cedar Rapids. She worked for Hawkeye Area Community Action and then for the Lynn County Juvenile Center. She then moved back to Mason City and worked for Handicap Village and Francis Lauer for several years until retirement.

Velva was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Velva’s greatest love was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a very generous and giving person who was always helping others.

Velva is survived by three sons, Steven Brown, Michael Brown and his wife, Ann, and David Brown and his wife, Cynthia, all of Mason City; a foster daughter, Teresa Dexter and her husband, Kris, of Moses Lake, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Abby, Lucy, Maggie, Jefferson, Matthew, Jacob and Serina; four great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Jack, Simon and Grayce; a brother, Tom Waters, of Independence, Mo., and a sister, Edith Nauman, Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arthur, Lloyd, Herbert and Merle; sisters, Juanita, Dorothy and Elsie, and one niece.

Barbara was born on Sept. 7, 1957, in Mason City, the daughter of Pete and Madeline (Bartholomew) Weitzel. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School.

She was united in marriage to Rick Ackerman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Barbara worked for 15 years for Kraft Foods in Mason City and retired from there due to ill health. Barbara enjoyed working and associating with all the employees at Kraft Foods.

She was united in marriage to Brian Smith on Aug. 14, 1993, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

She enjoyed her dogs, collecting dolls, bears, lighthouses, NASCAR races, looking at flowers, nature and singing.

She had a great sense of humor, and was a very giving and caring person.

She enjoyed watching her son, Adam, playing hockey and go-kart racing, and her daughter, Abby, playing softball and dancing. Her great love and enjoyment were her husband and children.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Brian Smith, of Mason City; her two children, Adam Ackerman and Abby Ackerman, both of Mason City; her mother, Madeline Weitzel, of Mason City; a brother, Thomas Weitzel and his wife, Vernell, of Bowie, Md.; five sisters, Betty Paloma and her husband, Armondo, of Mason City, Dorothy Bryant and her husband, Bertram, of Mason City, Dixie Huffman and her husband, Jim, of Mesa, Ariz., Susan Fritts and her husband, Duane, of Mason City, and Deborah Calkins and her husband, Michael, of Mason City; a very special niece, Laura Calkins, of Mason City, as well as many special nieces and nephews that she was close to, along with other relatives and many special friends.

Maxine E. Lewis was born June 28, 1916, the daughter of Burdette “Curly” and Avis E. (Trevette) Lewis in Mason City. She began school in Kanawha and attended the Mason City public school system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1934.

Following her graduation, she worked for J.C. Penney from 1934 to 1935. Maxine then became the first student at La’James Beauty College in 1936. In 1936, she joined her mother at the Family Beauty Salon, where she later worked with her daughter, Sharon.

Maxine E. Lewis was united in marriage to Eugene E. Clark on May 8, 1948, in Faribault, Minn.

She was a lifetime and faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City, where Maxine was also a member of the former Y.W.A. Circle and held a Cradle Roll Card.

She was also a former mem-ber of the National Cosmetology Association and the Pilot Club.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Sharon L. Olson, of Mason City; granddaughter, Candy Hinderman, of Mason City; grandson, Todd J. BELMOND — Dora Sjoberg, 91, of Belmond, passed away Friday (Feb. 27, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Dora and her twin brother, Donald, were born March 2, 1912, in Belmond, the children of Wm. and Dora Preston Buchanan. The family lived in Belmond, where the 13 Buchanan children attended school.

On Nov. 29, 1930, Dora was united in marriage with Marvin L. Sjoberg in Clarion. The couple made their home in Belmond until 1942, when they relocated to Coon Rapids for Marvin’s job, returning to Belmond in 1949.

Dora was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a great mom and grandma, and was always willing to lend a helping hand with caring for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members.

She enjoyed baking, sewing and crafts, and each of her grandchildren had a sock monkey that she made for them. She also loved fishing and visiting the resort in Minnesota.

Dora was able to live in her own home until 1987, when she became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center.

Dora is survived by one daughter, Connie Eckhoff, of Belmond; one son, Donald G. Sjoberg, of Eagle Grove; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin in 1968; one grandson, Steven Eckhoff; three sisters, Edna Warnke, Emma Mayer and Ruth Elwell, and nine brothers, Earl, Charles, Bernard, Ted, Chester, Donald, Raymond, Russell and Merlin.

Hubert Keiser was born the son of Charles and Norma Tripp Keiser on Nov. 12, 1908, in Manchester, Iowa.

He married Della Evers on June 24, 1949. Four children were born to this union, Charles, Kathleen, Kristeen, and David.

Hubert worked most of his years in the hardware business. His last job was at Swenson’s Hardware, formerly Kreitingers.

Mr. Keiser was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt.

He was a faithful husband and loving father. His family enjoyed many fishing vacations in northern Minnesota, as he was an avid fisherman. He never missed his sons’ sporting events.

Hubert is survived by his wife, Della; four children: Charles Keiser and Norma, of Winner, S.D., Kathleen and Steve Tolbert, of Lafayette, Ind., Kristeen and Steve Gunderson, of Odebolt, and David Keiser and Rene, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Preceding Hubert in death before he was even 17 were his mother, father and his three brothers, Dale, Clifton and Howard.

Eldon died on Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004) at his home in Northwood.

Eldon was born Oct. 29, 1945, to Milferd and Edna (Broitzman) Leidal. He was baptized and confirmed at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church.

Eldon was raised by his grandparents, Morris and Amanda (Foley) Leidal, after the death of his mother, Edna, in 1946.

He attended grade school at the Davis School District No. 59, seventh and eighth grades at Glenville High School, and he graduated from Northwood High School.

Eldon worked at Wilson’s in Albert Lea, painted with Tom Mooney, worked at Fleetguard in Lake Mills, and owned Leidal Sanitation in Northwood for many years.

His interests were Elvis Presley, the Green Bay Packers, the Northwood-Kensett football games, metal detecting and his Corvettes.

Survivors include his sisters, Marcile (Kenneth) Anderson, of Glenville, Lorraine (David) Horning, of Glenville, and Donna (Michael) Edworthy, of Lea-gue City, Texas; brothers, Tim (Vicki) Leidal, of Charles City, and Tom Leidal, of Lyle, Minn.; also, a special uncle, Wayne (Helen) Leidal, of Glenville, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Milferd and Edna (Broitzman) Leidal; sister, Diane Leidal; grandparents, Morris and Amanda (Foley) Leidal, and Bernhard and Eliza (Wolff) Broitzman.

Eldon will be sadly missed by his family and special friends, Wayne Jacobs, Dennis Grube, Obed Ladd and his dog, Lady.
