MARION WILLIAM CARBERRY
AREDALE — Marion William Carberry, 90, of 2459A
230th St., Aredale, died early Wednesday morning
(Feb. 4, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa of complications from exposure.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday at the Aredale United Methodist Church,
with the Rev. Kenneth Kent officiating.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose
Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. to-day at
the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.
in Mason City.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may
wish to consider memorials to the Marion
Carberry memorial fund.
Marion was one of 11 children born to Abner and
Edna Lucy “Freeman” Carberry in Clackamas
County, Ore. He attended school in Miltonville.
When he and his love, Margaret F. Kay, decided
to get married they applied for a job working
for and with Frank Henke on his farm.
They were united in marriage on Feb. 23, 1937.
During World War II, he left the farm to serve
his country working in a steel mill in Clinton,
Iowa, manufacturing parts for 50 caliber machine
gun turrets.
Two years later, Frank wrote Marion and invited
him back to work on the farm. He remained there
until Frank’s death in 1967 and took over
ownership of the farm. He continued until
retiring in 1986.
Farmers never really quit farming and Marion
continued planting two acres of sweet corn until
10 years ago when he downsized his crops.
He enjoyed visiting with people, or more
importantly, driving 25 to 30,000 miles a year
while visiting relatives and the friends he had
made over the years and feeding corn to the
ducks in East Park.
Marion also fished at numerous North Iowa ponds,
rivers and lakes in his travels. He had a dry
sense of humor and liked to play mischievous
tricks.
He always had time to play with his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they
came to visit. Marion was in excellent health
often walking up to10 miles a day with his dogs.
Even recently he cut his own firewood.
Marion will be sadly missed by his son and wife,
William “Bill” and Julene Carberry, of Aredale;
his two grandchildren, Jodilynn and her husband,
Michael Shreve, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Shaun
Carberry, of Aredale; and his two
great-grandchildren, Cole and Hannah. He is also
survived by two sisters, Edith Coy, of
Shellsburg, and Esther Carberry, of Hyden, Ky.;
and five brothers, Arthur and wife, Vivian
Carberry, of Mason City; Merle and wife, Marilyn
Carberry, of Lake Villa, Ill.; Wayne Carberry
and Paul and wife, Sue Carberry all of Prescott
Valley, Ariz.; and Howard and wife, Sharon
Carberry, of Lorena, Texas; and many nieces and
nephews and a host of friends.
Marion was preceded in death by his wife,
Margaret, on Feb. 26, 1998; sister Lois Carberry;
and two brothers, Cecil and Raymond Carberry.
