IDELLA G. WALKER


MASON CITY — Idella G. Walker, 95, of 215 Fourth St. N.E. in Mason City, died Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 18, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth H. Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Those wishing to extend memorials may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa.

Idella Geneva Walker was born April 1, 1908, in Hanlontown, to George F. and Ida Amelia (Brattrud) Olson. She was one of eight children born to her parents.

Idella attended beauty school in Kansas City, Mo., and practiced cosmetology for 27 years in various salons, retiring in 1988.

On Nov. 18, 1953, Idella was united in marriage to Timothy S. Walker at “The Wedding Chapel” in Los Angeles, Calif. After living in Kansas City and Los Angeles for several years, the couple moved to Mason City in 1988.

In her leisure time, Idella found great joy in dancing, watching horse races, cooking and sewing. She claimed to love life, laughing and having good, clean fun!

Idella will be missed dearly by those who have shared in her life.

She is survived by four nieces, Janet Moen, Esther Drake, Patricia Scanlon and Kerry Roberts and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Idella in death were her husband, Timothy in 1993; her parents, George and Ida Olson; her three brothers, Ole, Oscar and Kenneth Olson; and her four sisters, Hazel Rafferty, Amy Crow, Malinda Olson and Mabel Olson.

HAROLD J. CLARK


PLYMOUTH — Harold J. Clark, 80, rural Plymouth, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Plymouth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continues one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Harold J. Clark Memorial Fund.

Harold was born Nov. 7, 1923, in Clear Lake, the son of Frank and Erma (Wetmore) Clark. He was raised on a farm near Clear Lake, where he acquired his love of the land.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea.

Harold married Frances Schossler on Nov. 7, 1946. Harold and Frances farmed near Rockwell for one year, then moved to the Plymouth area in 1949, where he continued to farm until his death.

He also worked as a salesman in the area for Pioneer Seed for 28 years.

Harold was a member of the Plymouth United Metho-dist Church for 54 years. Harold served on the Worth County Soil Conservation Board and the Plymouth Elevator Board.

Harold was admired and respected by his many friends for his love of family, work ethic, integrity and excellent golf game.

Like all farmers Harold liked sunshine, good food, especially the fresh fish that his grandsons would catch, the county fair, dinner at noon, his neighbors, his shirt collar unbuttoned and above all a good soaking rain in August.

If Harold was not in the fields or at the golf course, he was enjoying watching his grandson wrestle or play ball. Harold never met a stranger. He could create a connection with anyone that he met. “Dad did it his way.”

Harold is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances, of Plymouth; daughter, Linda Fruland and husband, Robert, of Minneapolis, Minn.; sons, Dave Clark and wife, Kay, of Plymouth, Dan Clark and wife, Vicki, of Plymouth; four grandsons, Ben and Alan Fruland of Minne-apolis, Minn., Bryan Clark of Plymouth and T.J. Clark of Plymouth; granddaughter, Amber Clark, of Mason City; brother, Robert Clark and wife, Mary, of Mason City; sisters, Maxine Bacon, of Clear Lake, Phyllis Shimek and husband, Cletus, of Charles City; Barbara Roenfanz and husband, Robert, of Mountain Home, Ark., and Erma Lou Smith and husband, Jerry, of Mountain Home, Ark.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marjorie Toppin and her husband Paul; brother, Morris Clark and his wife, Barb; brother-in-law, Louis Bacon.

PAUL P. HIATT


MASON CITY — Paul P. Hiatt, 78, of 311 19th St. S.E., Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Penn. Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. William W. Poland officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where a flag ceremony will be conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. NE. in Mason City.

Family suggests memorials to Paul P. Hiatt Memorial Fund.

Paul was born March 15, 1925, in Van Meter, the son of Jesse and Grace (Walters) Hiatt. He was in the Mason City Class of 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he met and married his wife, Connie Belleli, on Aug. 4, 1945, in London, England.

Paul moved back to Mason City following the service, and worked as a milkman for Sweet Clover Dairy, later Hermanson Dairy, Carnation, and retiring in 1983 with Swiss Valley Dairy.

He then worked for Sears in maintenance for 10 years, retiring in 1993.

Paul was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed attend-ing all of his grandchildren’s events. He was known by his family for his one line jokes (P.J’s).

He is a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Teamsters Union #828.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife, Connie Hiatt, of Mason City; their three children, Doug Hiatt and his wife, Phyllis, of Owatonna, Minn., Daryl Hiatt and his wife, Sue, and Sherri Powell and her husband, Dick, all of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Travis Hiatt and his wife, Kristi, Shelly Hiatt, Tony Hiatt and his fiancee, Heather Wallace, Jake Hiatt, Amy Hiatt and her fiance, Shawn Graven, Abby Powell, Mandi Powell and Josh Powell; four stepgrandchildren, Tammy Bennerotte and her husband, Roger, Todd Ramer and his wife, Mary Beth, Tracy Ramer and his wife, Dawn, and Teresa Johnson; three great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Connie Lee Cummings, of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Carol Ann Hiatt; and one brother, Wayne Hiatt.

WINIFRED ‘WINNIE’ M. MERFELD


CHARLES CITY — Winifred “Winnie” M. Merfeld, 86, of 802 Fifth Ave., Charles City, died Wednesday morning (Feb. 18, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. to-day at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with a rosary recited at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church.

“Winnie” M. Merfeld was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Corning, Kan., the daughter of Joseph and Catherine G. (Gudenkauf) Rottinghaus. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Dougherty, Class of 1935.

On Aug. 22, 1939, “Winnie” was united in marriage to John E. Merfeld. The couple made their home on a farm in the Dougherty and Marble Rock areas before moving to a farm south of Colwell in 1974. In 1987, the couple moved to Charles City.

In addition to helping her husband farm, “Winnie” en-joyed caring for her large family and extended families by baking cinnamon rolls, homemade breads, pies and cookies.

She enjoyed all sports, es-pecially watching her grandsons wrestle and play baseball. “Winnie” also loved to play cards with cribbage and 500 being her favorites.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Theresa’s Circle, Rosary Society, The Birthday Club, and Soroptimist “500” Club.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in “Winnie’s” life are her children, Joann (Wade) Brantley of Carlisle, Janice Merfeld of Tempe, Ariz., Jolene (Lyle) Bohn of Waseca, Minn., Judy (Mike) Wollner of Mason City, Janella (Joe) Steele of Ft. Worth, Texas, John (Deb) Merfeld of Columbus, Wis., Joe (Chris) Merfeld of Almo, Ky., Jill (Gary) Flaa of Maple Grove, Minn., and Jennifer (Steve) Hubert of Charles City.

“Winnie” is survived by her 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers, Mary Catherine Clark of Decatur, Ill., Sr. Mary Michael Rottinghaus and Sr. Mary Anthony Rottinghaus, both of Dubuque, Raymond (Teresa) Rottinghaus of Mason City, Sr. Mary Rosanne Rottinghaus of Dubuque, Joseph (Dee) Rottinghaus of Clear Lake, and James (Dixie) Rottinghaus of Urbandale.

“Winnie” is preceded in death by her husband, John E. Merfeld, on Oct. 11, 1991; a granddaughter, Katrina; her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Norma Rottinghaus; an infant brother, Raphael Rottinghaus, and a brother-in-law, Jack Clark.

PATRICIA JEAN PETERSON


HAMPTON — Patricia Jean Peterson, 71, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 2004) at her home in Hampton.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with a 5 p.m. Eastern Star service.

Patricia Jean Peterson was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Lucas, Iowa, to Earl and Janie Hall Allen.

She was a graduate of Lucas High School and then Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She was united in marriage to LaVere Peterson on June 30, 1956 in Osceloa, Iowa.

She was a teacher with the Hampton School System from 1960 to 1998. After she retired, she was a night teacher for North Iowa Area Community College.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton.

She was a member of Eastern Star, faculty advisor to Model U.N., and the Franklin County Preservation Society in Hampton.

She enjoyed riding horses, spending time with her grandchildren, her pets and antiquing with friends.

She is survived by a son, William Peterson, of Huxley; daughter, Katie Jacoby, of Des Moines; sister, Kathryn Dixson, of Lucas; brother, Willard and wife, Elnora Allen, of Lucas; granddaughters, Janie Jacoby and Alice Jacoby; and grandson, Nick Jacoby.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, two infant sisters, and two brothers.

RUTH P. KNAPP


THORNTON—Ruth P. Knapp, 95, died Friday (Feb. 20, 2004) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thornton, presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth Pauline Freudenberg was born August 9, 1908, to Fred and Bertha (Schaefer) Freudenberg at Sheffield.

She graduated from high school then taught in country schools. In February 1927, Pauline was united in marriage with Arthur Knapp. They made their home west of Sheffield working for the Oelkers farm. They later moved to Thornton and managed a farm for Carl Henkel prior to farming for themselves in Thornton. Ruth and Arthur retired from the farm and moved to Clear Lake.

After several years there, they moved back to Thornton where Ruth lived until entering Good Shepherd Health Center in 1995.

Ruth did a lot of babysitting for farmers in the Thornton area. She loved working with the church circle at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer for the circle and as church secretary for 17 years. She was active with the Senior Citizens.

Ruth enjoyed spending time in her gardens and raising chickens, she was known as a wonderful cook. Family was very important to her and she stayed very close to her family, she even helped to raise her nephews. With family or friends, Ruth could not pass up a good card game. She would often times play cards all day and into the evening if the opponents were willing.

Ruth and Arthur had no children of their own but are loved and survived by many nieces and nephews including: Max Freudenberg of Alabama; Clarence Clark, Mason City; Mary Louise Ashland, Mason City, and Elsworth Clark of Mason City.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bertha; her husband, Arthur; sister, Rose Clark; and brothers, George Freudenberg and Albert Freudenberg.

CEDAR FALLS — Robert F. McSweeney, 85, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Osage and Fort Dodge died of heart failure Friday (Feb. 20, 2004) at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

Memorial services are being planned for the near future at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with inurnment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, both in Osage.

There will be no visitation as Robert’s body has been cremated.

A memorial fund will be established.

He was born November 16, 1918, in Liberty Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Stewart Cornelius and Charlotte Agnes (McGrane) McSweeney.

Robert married Maxine Penney November 25, 1936, at Cresco. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre from 1943 to 1945.

Robert farmed until 1962 when they moved to Fort Dodge where he was employed at Coats Manufacturing and then Standard Engineering, until retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine McSweeney, of Cedar Falls; his daughter, Kay McSweeney, also of Cedar Falls; his grandson, Michael McSweeney of Indianapolis, Ind.; his brother, Richard (Jan) McSweeney of Hampton; and his sister, Phyllis Schrock of Charles City.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter in infancy; one brother and four sisters.

MASON CITY— Christina Halidas, 83, formerly of 1204 N. Virginia Ave., Mason City, died Friday, (Feb. 20, 2004) at USA Health Care.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 2nd St S.W., Mason City, with Rev. Joseph Mirowski, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, where a Trisagion prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Christina Halidas memorial fund.

Christina was born July 11, 1920, at New York, N.Y., a daughter of Antonio and Frieda (Vitalis) Savas.

She attended school in New York, N.Y. Christina worked for many years at Russell Stover Candies on Manhattan’s 5th Avenue. She moved to Mason City 15 years ago to be near her family.

Christina appreciated the arts, especially music and the theatre. She enjoyed needlework and spending time with her family.

She was a member of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Mason City.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Stephanie Prohaski and her husband, Dwayne, Mason City; Anthony Savas and his wife, Terry, Eldorado Hills, Calif.; Ted Savas and his wife, Carol, Eldorado Hills, Calif.; Kris Christensen and her husband, David, Mason City; great-nieces and nephews, Paul Prohaski, Alyssa Prohaski, Jamie Christensen, Matt Christensen, Chad Tittle, Rachel Savas, Nikkos Savas, Alexandra Savas, Demetri Savas; an aunt, Anna Vitales, North Aurora, Ill.; several cousins including, Effie Vitale, Montgomery, Ill.; John Vitale, Montgomery, Ill.; and Nick Rabias, Queens, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; a brother, Mike Savas; and an uncle, Ernie Vitales.

FOREST CITY — Wallace A. Larson, age 76, of Forest City, died Friday (Feb. 20, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Inurnment will be in the spring at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to service at the church.

Wallace Arthur Larson was born on April 28, 1927, on the family farm near Joice, the son of Lauritz and Anna (Storre) Larson. He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church in Joice. He attended elementary country school and graduated from Joice High School.

On November 9, 1952, he was united in marriage with Beverly Potter at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. Wally lived and farmed with his family in Joice and then worked for Winnebago Industries until his retirement. The couple moved to Forest City in 1971.

Wally enjoyed music and dancing but loved working with his hands. He made toys for all his grandchildren, from horses to doll houses. Wally never met a stranger. He always had a kind word and a smile and loved helping people.

Wally is survived by his wife, Beverly Larson, of Forest City; a son, Stephen Larson of De Kalb, Ill., and his children, Dylan and Anna of De Kalb and Nick of Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma; his daughter Kay, and her husband, Roger Lee, of Leland, and her children, Jennifer Hansen of Mosinee, Wis., and Lisa Hansen of Forest City; his daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Mark Wilson, of Battlefield, Mo., and their boys, Matt and Mike. Also surviving is a sister, Maynis Aamodt and her husband, Carroll, of Northwood; and two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Larson of Clear Lake and Dorothy Larson of Mason City.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ivanell McKissick; three brothers, Leroy, Royden and Norman Larson; and a daughter-in-law, Kristi Larson.

Janet Carol Stubbe was born October 14, 1939, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, a daughter of Herman and Daisy Margaret Janet Stewart Young (McLeod) Stubbe, and died Friday, February 20, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

As an infant, her family made their home in Ames where her father worked for the survey department of the Highway Commission until 1941 when they started farming near Aredale. In 1950, they moved to their present farm east of Greene. She was baptized on July 29, 1951, at Grace Episcopal Church in Charles City.

Janet attended the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs for thirteen years, graduating in 1959.

On May 15, 1960, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Carl Twachtmann in Greene, and to this union were born two daughters, Cheryl and Caroline.

They made their home in Marion until she moved home to live with her parents in 1969. Janet later moved to Waterloo where she was employed by Goodwill Industries and the Olive Garden. Due to her failing health, she moved to the Manor Care in 1999.

While attending school in Council Bluffs she participated in the Special Olympics. Her hobbies included cross-stitch and needle work. She enjoyed playing Bingo and watching sports on television. She was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan.

Living family members include her two daughters: Cheryl (Ron) Cook and Caroline Twachtmann both of Marion; her sister, Flora (Bob) Knorr of Umatilla, Fla., and her brother Dan (Mary) Stubbe of Marshalltown, her nieces; Penny (John) Ernst of Marshalltown, Diane Stubbe of Urbandale, Robin (Michael) Vance of Lexington, S.C.; and a nephew, Chad (Jean) Tiernan of Boca Raton,Fla. She is also survived by four aunts, Emma Marsh, Gertie Marsh, and June Stubbe all of Greene and Bobbie Davis of Dumont, along with many cousins.

She was employed as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant and later at Bret Department Store.

She played the piano for her own enjoyment and was quite talented in drawing, painting and especially sketching people. She was a kind-hearted person and enjoyed being with family and friends. Her last gift was to donate tissue to the Red Cross recovery team of Minnesota for donation to others in need.

Those thankful in sharing Rosemary’s life include her mother, Evelyn Vala; and her sister, Theresa Dean both of Rockford; two brothers, Michael Vala and his wife, Teddi, Marble Rock; and Timothy Vala and his wife, Donna, of Portland, Texas; four nieces and two nephews, Melissa, John, Kelly, Christine, Jennifer and John and a host of friends and other relatives.

KLEMME — Paul A. Thiemann, age 85, a lifelong resident of Klemme and longtime farmer died Saturday, (Feb. 21, 2004) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond surrounded by his family.

Paul Athneil Thiemann was born June 26, 1918, on the Thiemann family farm, rural Klemme, the son of Heinrich (Henry) J. and Minnie (Schuettpelz) Thiemann. He was baptized October 6, 1918, and later confirmed on March 25, 1932. He attended rural Hancock County schools.

Paul was a farmer for his entire working career. He began farming on the Thiemann family farm land, that God had lent him in 1953 and continued actively operating the farmuntil the early 1980s. Paul loved farming and to work the earth and was devoted to being a good steward of the resource he was given.

Paul was united in marriage to Judy Nieman in January of 1953. They had no children of their own. They were married until January 1968 when Judy passed away. He was later married to Grace Blank in August of 1969 by Pastor Ray Barz at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Klemme. This union lasted nearly 35 years and enriched his life with a wonderful wife, two daughters, a son, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

During his life, Paul enjoyed the fellowship of friends and family. He cherished times that were spent with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren teaching them how to do a variety of activities and tasks. He looked forward to giving them rides on the tractors, crafting toys and games for them, and teaching them how to fish.

Paul loved his life as a farmer and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of farming with others. Even as his health was failing, he continued to share his insights and knowledge of his chosen profession with his family.

Paul was an excellent woodworker who loved to make handcrafted items for his family and friends. He enjoyed taking fishing trips to South Dakota and Minnesota. He liked to go camping and treasured times spent with family and friends. He enjoyed music and had a wonderful voice, a gift he shared with others as a member of the church choir in earlier years. Paul was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, where he had been active as a deacon and elder for many years.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife, Grace Thiemann, Klemme; daughters, Diane McCabe and husband, Doug, Garner, Linda Brown and husband, Shirley, Wichita, Kan.; and son, Kenneth Blank, and wife, Jan, Klemme; a sister, Luella Yakel, Klemme; grandchildren, Hope Wheatcraft and husband, Dave, Kristine Enabnit and husband, Allen, Christopher Brown and wife, Jayme, Stacey Haviland and husband, Chris, Jarred Brown and special friend, Cecilia, and Holly Anderson and husband Jamin; nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

GARNER — Walter J. Gorman, 81, of Garner died Sunday (February 22, 2004) at his home following a battle with cancer.

Walter Joseph Gorman, the son of Walter James and Ida (Ingalls) Gorman, was born October 24, 1922, at Haywarden. He grew up in Algona and graduated from Algona High School in 1940. He continued his education at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and then worked for the FBI. Walter served his country during WorldWar II in the Merchant Marines for four years. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Algona. On October 16, 1949, he married Phylida Scanlan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Algona, Ventura and, in 1960, moved to Garner. Walter was employed at Northern Natural Gas in Ventura for 35 years before retiring in 1986.

He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed sitting on the front porch with his dog, Chloe, and visiting with friends and neighbors. His unbelievable “silly” stories and unique sense of humor will be missed by all.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Dorothy Edna (Lester) Rippentrop, daughter of Clarence and Mary (Nance) Lester, was born on Feb. 12, 1904, at Summerset, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Lakota High School in Lakota.

On Nov. 21, 1934, Dorothy was united in marriage with Albert C. Rippentrop at Estherville, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm in German Township, south of Lakota, for 59 years.

They were blessed with three children, Waynard, Caralee, and Nyle. Albert farmed and Dorothy lovingly tended to their home and family.

In 1993, the couple moved to an apartment in Lakota.

Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota where she was active with the Presbyterian Women and Martha’s Circle.

Survivors include her children, Caralee Wright and her husband, Robert, of Clinton, and Nyle Rippentrop and his wife, Marge, of Rock Falls; daughter-in-law, Elenora Rippentrop of Lakota; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years, Albert; a son, Waynard; two granddaughters, Vanessa and Valerie Follman; and a brother, Frank Nance.

Raymond Gerszewski was born on Aug. 31, 1920, in Ardoch, N.D., in Walsh County, the son of Alexander and Stella (Paschke) Gerszewski. He was christened at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, N.D. He attended and received his education in the rural country school near Argyle, Minn.

Ray began his elevator-building career in 1948. He worked for Selettbo Construction based in Minneapolis, Minn., for 21 years beginning in 1951, as a foreman for siding and roofing.

He was united in marriage to Selma Nelson on Dec. 28, 1968, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

In 1970, he began working at B&K Lumber yard in Northwood.

In 1985, he retired and became an avid gardener.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1930. After graduating from high school she taught school in the Hartland Township School No. 5 for four years.

She was united in marriage to Raymond A. Hopperstad in November of 1936, at the Lutheran Parsonage near Northwood. After their marriage together they farmed in Hartland Township for 40 years.

Alfreda moved to Northwood in 1980, and later to Maple Court Apartments, and most recently to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing cards, dancing, and traveling.

She was a very active member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Marianne Hunchis Reynolds, 70, of Burnsville, Minn., died Thursday (Feb. 19, 2004) in St. Paul of pneumonia.

Marianne was born on Aug. 18, 1933, in Mason City, Iowa. Her parents were Kathleen Dorsey Hunchis and Fred and Julia Spaanum Hunchis.

She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1951, received a B.A. from the College of St. Catherine in 1955, and an M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1987.

Marianne was united in marriage to William E. Reynolds on June 9, 1955, in Plymouth, Iowa. They lived in Plymouth, St. Paul, Eagan, and Burnsville.

Marianne was an elementary teacher in St. Paul from 1955 to 1959, and in Burnsville from 1960 to 1993. She was Burnsville’s Teacher of the Year in 1978.

Marianne was a charter member of Mary, Mother of the Church.

She was a member of the Burnsville Education Association, Minnesota Education Association and the National Education Association. She volunteered at Open Arms of Minnesota, belonged to HIV/AIDS Support Groups, and was a speaker on HIV/AIDS.

She is survived by her husband, William E. Reynolds; daughter, Anne Mary (Chuck) Taylor, of Orlando, Fla.; sons, John (Leslie) Reynolds, of Chaska, Minn., and Patrick (Laura) Reynolds, of Burnsville; seven grandchildren, Mary Michael and Katy Taylor, Joe, Mary Margret and Alice Reynolds, and Evin and Jack Reynolds; sister, Katy (Lowell) Holden; and brothers, John (Caroll) Hunchis and Bill (Bettie) Hunchis.

He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force on March 13, 1958, and served with the 3610th Air Base Group and was honorably discharged on April 12, 1960.

He was united in marriage to Lois Harvey on July 10, 1965, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Henry proudly served in the Army during World War II.

He married Lillian C. Kent on Sept. 4, 1942, in Springfield, Mo. They lived in various communities and settled into Mason City where he worked as an auto mechanic for Stockberger Transfer and Storage for 20 years retiring in 1980.

Henry later married Jeanine Gerbig on Aug. 17, 1996, at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown.

He enjoyed doing yard work and craft work.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, and longtime member of the Fisher American Legion Post No. 14, Swea City.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanine Kockler, of Hanlontown; two step-daughters, Janet Taylor, of Manly; and Sandra Scholbrock and her husband, Rick, of Hanlontown; four step-grandchildren, Madeline and Meggie Taylor, both of Manly, and Crystal and Katelyn Scholbrock, both of Hanlontown, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 50 years, Lillian, on Sept. 24, 1992; one sister, Marian Hess; and three brothers, Sylvester, Joseph, and Richard Kockler.

OSAGE — Max Merrill Morrison, 85, of Osage died Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Max was born June 9, 1918, at Unionville, the son of Myron Byrl and Verna (Wamsley) Morrison. He moved with his parents to Mitchell County in 1921 and attended schools in Mitchell County.

He was baptized at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in West Lincoln, Mitchell County, in 1925.

He became a member of the United Church of Christ in 1945, and served on many boards of the church.

He married Leone Folsom on Oct. 2, 1937. They farmed all of their married life, until retiring to Osage in 1979.

He was active in the Farm Bureau as a farmer, was a 50-year member of the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F & A.M., and was a Past Master of that Lodge.

He also served on the Orchard School Board for several years, served on the Faith Lutheran Home Board, and was a director on the REC Board at St. Ansgar for 17 years. After the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease in 1994, he resided for three and a half years in the Patty Elwood Center at Cresco and for four and a half years in the Good Samaritan Center. His main interest was being a good farmer.

Other interests and enjoyments were being with his family, fishing, golfing and going on many bus tours. He and his wife spent several winters in Arizona and Texas.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Champion- Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Judy A. Pietersen, 55, of Lakeville, Minn., passed away at her home early Saturday morning (Feb. 21, 2004) after nearly a two-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born May 19, 1948, in Cresco, to Neil and Dorothy Gassett of Lime Springs, Iowa.

After high school, Judy attended and graduated from La’James Beauty College in Mason City. Judy worked several years at various hair salons in the area and was working in Charles City the day of the destructive tornado in 1968.

Judy married William Pietersen of Mason City, on April 12, 1969, in Lime Springs. They made their home in St. Paul where Judy continued her profession as a cosmetologist.

Judy and Will moved to Lakeville in April, 1975, where they have lived since. Judy had worked in the dental field for more than 15 years, most recently as an Ortho-Analyst for Delta Dental of Minnesota. She won multiple achievement awards during her tenure there. She also continued to work part-time as a hairdresser.

Judy is survived by her husband, Will, of 35 years; three children, Paige (Doug) Beach, of Lakeville, Patrick, of Lakeville, and Tara, of Duluth, Minn.; a grandson, Tristen Beach; her mother, Dorothy Gassett, of Lime Springs; a sister, Jean (Bill) Stopperan, of Windsor, Colo.; a niece, nephews, aunts and cousins as well as numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Neil Gassett; and father and mother-in-law, Francis and Thelma Pietersen.

Visitation was held on Monday evening, Feb. 23, at White Funeral Home in Apple Valley, Minn., with services on Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Burnsville, Minn. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

HURST, Texas — Norman Paul Bohning, 59, passed away Sunday (Feb. 15, 2004) at his home.

Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas with the Rev. Rosemary Oberhue, officiating.

Norman was born Oct. 15, 1944, in Belmond, Iowa, to Paul Andrew and Esther Pauline (Dorenkamp) Bohning. He grew up in the small town of Belmond, Iowa, among the cornfields of his family’s farm.

Graduating from Alexander High School in 1962, he attended Mason City Junior College prior to entering the U.S. Army.

Norman served his country in Vietnam as a warrant officer and helicopter pilot, and was awarded the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.

In 1979, he received a bachelor’s degree in religion from Texas Wesleyan University.

Norman was preceded in death by his father, Paul Bohning, on Jan. 15, 1985; his sister, Rhoda “Madison” Kohler (Bohning) on Jan. 21, 2004.

A long standing member of the First United Methodist Church of Bedford, Norman touched many lives in his time with us. He will be missed by many.

RALEIGH, N.C. — William Ernest Kalin Jr., 54, of Raleigh, N.C., died Feb. 22, 2004.

Mr. Kalin was a Vietnam War veteran with the 173rd Airborne Brigade 2nd of 503rd/Recon. Platoon/Wildcat 4, 1969-70, and served for more than 30 years as a firefighter in New York.

Henry G. Vierkant was born July 13, 1918, near Goodell, in Hancock County, to George and Katie (Van Osten) Vierkant.

Henry was joined in marriage to Louise F. Woodiwiss Aug. 10, 1959, at the Wayside Chapel in the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City.

Henry farmed near Portland, Iowa, and then worked 21 years for Armour Foods, retiring in 1984.

Henry served in World War II as a medic in France, Germany and Austria.

He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 733 and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

In retirement, he enjoyed taking care of his lawn and raising beautiful flowers that the whole neighborhood enjoyed.

He loved feeding the birds and trying to identify all the varieties that came to depend on him for many years.

Domino, his dog, was the only dog that walked an average of 50 blocks a day year round. All the neighbors looked forward to seeing them and marveled at their stamina.

Henry is survived by his daughter, Roseanne (Michael) Hauser, and son, Charles Woodiwiss; three grandchildren: Conrad (Vicki) Woodiwiss, Michelle Hauser and James Hauser; a sister-in-law, Carma Vierkant; three nieces, Diane (Dave) Pigg, Debra Vierkant and Denise (Roger) Waggnor; two nephews, Roger (Janice) Vaughn and Gary (Judy) Vaughn; one great-granddaughter, Corah Hauser, whom he thought the world of and was his “Little Sweetie”; one aunt, Dena Van Osten, and many cousins and many more friends.

CEDAR FALLS — Robert F. McSweeney, 85, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Osage and Fort Dodge, died of heart failure Friday (Feb. 20, 2004) at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Liberty Township, Mitchell County, the son of Stewart Cornelius and Charlotte Agnes (McGrane) McSweeney.

Robert married Maxine Penney on Nov. 25, 1936, at Cresco.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater from 1943 to 1945.

Robert farmed until 1962 when they moved to Fort Dodge, where he was employed at Coats Manufacturing and then Standard Engineering until retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine McSweeney, of Cedar Falls; his daughter, Kay McSweeney, also of Cedar Falls; his grandson, Michael McSweeney of Indianapolis, Ind.; his brother, Richard (Jan) McSweney of Hampton, and his sister, Phyllis Schrock, Charles City.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter in infancy, one brother and four sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with inurnment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, both in Osage.

ST. ANSGAR — Wilbur Winterton, 98, of St. Ansgar, died Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) at St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Friday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

E. LAVONNE PATTERSON


BELMOND — E. LaVonne Patterson, 93, of Belmond, passed into rest peacefully on Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center after several months of declining health.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lindenwood Cemetery in Geneva with a reception following at the United Methodist Church in Geneva. Pastor Mike Druhl will officiate.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated.

The family wishes memorials to be directed to the Belmond-Klemme Schools.

LaVonne was born in Ovid, Colo., on Nov. 14, 1910, the daughter of Lee and Ethel (Fowler) McNames. Her parents returned to Iowa with Lavonne shortly after her birth. LaVonne subsequently lived in Geneva and Hampton, where her father, Lee, was the sheriff of Franklin County for some years.

LaVonne graduated from Hampton High School in 1928 and from Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls in 1930.

She taught elementary school in Downer’s Grove, Ill., and substituted for the Sheffield Public Schools for many years.

In 1936, LaVonne married Hayes “Pat” Patterson of Kansas, a union that lasted 63 years.

Pat and LaVonne owned the John Deere dealership in Geneva until Pat’s retirement in the 1970’s.

At that time, they purchased a second home in Sun City, Ariz., where LaVonne spent winters through 2002.

LaVonne, a tireless volunteer and an avid bridge player, was active in a number of organizations in Sun City and a member of the Hampton Country Club.

Pat and LaVonne traveled extensively in Europe and Asia.

LaVonne was a talented pianist and amateur organist.

For the last 18 months, she has been a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center.

LaVonne is survived by her daughter, Mrs Patricia Patterson LaRue of Belmond; granddaughter, Mrs. Dawn Barkema and her husband, Delwin, of Belmond; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Brenna Barkema of Belmond; and a large number of other family members and friends in both Iowa and Arizona.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Hayes Patterson, and a grandson, Shawn LaRue of Belmond.

Her friends and family are grateful for her long life and energetic and generous personality. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

MASON CITY — Dr. G. J. Sartor, 97, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) at Riverview Manor Nursing Home, Pleasant Valley.

WILLIAM ERNEST KALIN JR.


RALEIGH, N.C. — William Ernest Kalin Jr., 54, of Raleigh, N.C., died Feb. 22, 2004. Mr. Kalin was a Vietnam veteran with the 173rd Airborne Brigade 2nd of 503rd/Recon. Platoon/Wildcat 4, 1969-70, and served more than 30 years as a firefighter in New York.

Mr. Kalin is survived by his father and mother, William Kalin Jr. and Shirley Kalin; wife, Dort Lehmann, of Columbia, S.C.; a son, William Kalin III of Watertown, N.Y.; daughters, Alona Kalin, of Raleigh, Jessica Kalin, of Raleigh, Tami Lehmann Hubler-Torrance and Jill Lehmann; grandchildren, Justice Kalin, Liberty Kalin, Elizabeth Vestal, Sloane and Kennidea Hubler and Carson Torrance; sisters, Sandy Danieu, Linda Kerr and Chery Bergin; brothers, Augie Kalin and David Kalin; several aunts, uncles and a bucket full of friends.

William was a fantastic huband, fantastic man, fantastic father, fantastic grandfather and will be missed by all.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. There will also be a memorial service held at 3 p.m. Sunday at South Bay Fire Station, South Bay, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the South Bay Fire Department or Palermo Fire Dept., care of William Kalin III.
