Gertrude M. Byrne

ROCKFORD — Gertrude M. Byrne, 71, of 226 Ninth St. S.E. in Rockford, died Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with Deacon Michael Byrne officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Cremation has taken place with Cremation Services of North Iowa Mason City.

Gertrude Marie Byrne was born May 17, 1933, in Lynn Center, Ill., the daughter of Harold and Elvera (Sundvall) Seabloom. She attended school in Illinois.

On Oct. 8, 1966, Gertrude was united in marriage to James Melton Byrne in Moline, Ill. The couple had lived in Orion, Ill. and Charles City, before making their home in Rockford, on Oct. 8, 1968.

Following the couple's marriage, Gertrude was employed as a nurse's aide with the Glen Oak Nursing Home in Coal Valley, Ill. She had also worked various jobs until retiring.

Gertrude was a devoted wife and homemaker she took great pride in nurturing her children and grandchildren. She was faithful in celebrating all holidays with her family, especially Christmas the day had great meaning to her because it is also her son Jim's birthday.

Gertrude will be best remembered as an independent and strong-willed woman. She was family oriented, enjoyed talking on the phone and was a very social person.

Some of Gertrude's interests and leisure activities included crocheting ripple afghans, which she tailored and crafted for family and friends.

She enjoyed solving word search puzzles, fishing on the Shell Rock River, listening to a variety of music from country and western to contemporary classical; and watching all sports, especially golf and girls basketball.

Gertrude will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Getrude's life are her children, Roxanne Byrne of Rockford; Jim Byrne of Rockford; her six grandchildren, Joshua, Jill, Stephanie, Jimmy, Jessica and Kolton; a brother, Maynard Seabloom of Gelva, Ill., and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends left to cherish her memory.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband, James Melton Byrne, on July 26, 1969; her parents; and one sister, Juanita Wilson.

RICEVILLE — Kenneth Losee, 70, of Riceville, died Monday (Nov. 29, 2004) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, with military honors performed by Roy Gue Post 244.

Frances Herrera

MASON CITY — Frances Herrera, 98, of Mason City, died Monday (Nov. 29, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or Holy Family Catholic Church.

Frances was born Nov. 25, 1906, the daughter of Joe and Lupe (Ameskau) Flores in Adio, Michoacan, Mexico. Frances came to the United States at the age of 9.

She first came to Mason City and then moved to Gary, Ind., where she met and married Albert E. "Shorty" Herrera on Feb. 11, 1927. Shorty and Frances returned to Mason City in 1928.

Frances was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She and her husband always enjoyed the various church activities.

Frances enjoyed cooking, crocheting and was known for her beautiful flower gardens.

Frances is survived by her four sons, Jesse J. Herrera and wife, Fran, of Carnation, Wash., Albert T. Herrera Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Mason City, Joe H. Herrera and wife, Sally, of Mason City, and Rich L. Herrera and wife, Sharon, of West Des Moines. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Teri Herrera, Lori Alitz, Jean Schultz, Jeff Herrera, Randy Herrera, Toni Herrera, Jodi Herrera, Sheri Herrera, Joleen Herrera and Staci Herrera; her 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Tony Flores of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Jesse Flores of Los Angeles, Calif.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Lupe Flores, husband, Albert E. "Shorty" Herrera Sr., in 1997; a daughter in infancy, Carmen Herrera; three sisters and two brothers.

Virginia Molina

MASON CITY — Virginia Molina, 75, of 311 Fifth St. N.W. Apt. 4, in Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 26, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

According to Virginia's wishes, her body was cremated at Cremation Services of North Iowa, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Paul, Minn.

Raymond Siems

CLARKSVILLE — Raymond Siems, 79, of the Shell Rock Care Center in Shell Rock, formerly of Clarksville, died Tuesday (Nov. 30, 2004) at Waverly Municipal Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville.

J.T. Riherd


BRITT — J.T. Riherd, 24, of Britt, died Sunday (Nov. 28, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church.

John Thomas Riherd, the son of Timothy Arnold Riherd and Sherri Louise (Swisher) Schrandt, was born July 31, 1980, at Britt. He attended school at Crystal Lake and Britt. J.T. was employed at North Iowa Wood Products in Belmond. He enjoyed working with wood and cars. His pride and joy was his son, Zebastian.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake.

He is survived by his son, Zebastian Riherd of Britt; fiancee, Shay Depue of Britt; mother, Sherri (Don) Schrandt of Britt; father, Tim (Cheryl) Riherd of Crystal Lake; three sisters, Gina Riherd of Britt, Katie Riherd of Crystal Lake and Carla Riherd of Britt; two step-sisters, Shannon (Jamie) Pascual of Hayfield and Stephanie Bonjour of Minneapolis, Minn.; maternal grandmother, Jean Swisher of Britt; paternal grandparents, Tom and Delores Riherd of Kanawha; paternal step-grandmother, Vi Swanson of Sheffield; several nieces and nephews; aunts; uncles; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Allen Riherd; maternal grandfather, Fred Swisher; and paternal step-grandfather, Larry Swanson.

ST. AUGUSTINE, ILL. — Darlene J. Bucholz, 65, of 278 Knox Road 450 E., St. Augustine, Ill., died Friday (Nov. 12, 2004) at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Ill., of natural causes.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Morgan Township Cemetery, rural Dows, Iowa. Burial will be Morgan Township Cemetery in rural Dows, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at the Dows Community Funeral Home, Dows, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1938, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of LaVern and Johanna Gerzema Lemke. She married Darold Bucholz on Dec. 22, 1962, in Dows, Iowa. He survives of rural St. Augustine, Ill.

She graduated in 1962 from the University of Northern Iowa teachers college. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairview, Ill. She was a past treasurer and member of the former Odd Fellows Association of Fairview, Ill.

Also surviving is a son, John Bucholz, of St. Augustine, Ill.; three sisters, Nancy (Tom) Kornfeld of Greenville, S. C., Judy Gorder of Dows, Iowa, and Linda (John) Kidney of Webster City, Iowa; one brother, Dennis (Avon) Lemke of Dows, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.

MASON CITY — Evelyn A. Kephart, 97, died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, 318 North Adams in Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Kanne presiding. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

MUSCATINE — Evelyn M. Rickey, mother of Miss Louise Munday, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at Unity Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 400 Iowa Avenue in Muscatine, with Dr. Hal Green of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Casket bearers will be Nick Ratcliff, Greg Johnston, Doug Johnston, Al Church, Steve Ziegenhorn and Bill Snydacker. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Evelyn was the daughter of Andrew and Dora Balder Thomas, born in Cook, Minn., on Nov. 2.

She married Delos G. "Rick" Rickey in Mason City on Feb. 14, 1955. They were married for 48 years before he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2003.

She was a lifelong resident of Mason City, only moving to Muscatine in November 2002.

Evelyn graduated from Mason City High School. She then pursued her career in dance, studying with professional dancer Gladys Hyatt in Chicago.

For years she continued to study with other professionals around the country, opening her own studio in Mason City, Clear Lake, Charles City, Austin and Rochester, Minn.

She taught for more than 35 years. This was her whole life, her love for dance. She touched the lives of so many dancers.

After closing her studio in Mason City, she opened Evelyns' Dance Boutique in Mason City. She loved to work with people. She and her husband loved to dance every week at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.

Evelyn loved to play bridge and she was involved in numerous bridge clubs for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Majhon Club in Mason City, a lifelong member of the Mason City Country Club, and member of the Lady Elks in Mason City and Muscatine.

Crocheting, knitting and sewing were another of her many hobbies.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Mason City, working very closely with the many women's groups in the church and community.

She had a great passion for life and people. She loved to travel. Her family meant the world to her. She had six sisters and two brothers. Her family owned and operated the A.J. Thomas and Sons Christmas Tree business in Mason City.

One of her biggest joys was helping her daughter, Louise Munday, start her own dance business in Muscatine. She was very involved in the studio and helped every year with the shows. She would travel to Chicago yearly with the girls in the Dance Company for the annual dance convention. Dance truly was her life. She had a tremendous energy for life and people.

Survivors are her daughter, Louise Munday, her husband, Ron Munday, and grandson Grant Munday, all of Muscatine; a son, Steven Rickey, his wife, Gail, of Kent, Wash.; three grandchildren, Jeanne Rickey, Craig Rickey, and Leighanne Malvotte; and two great-grandchildren, Jared and Alex Rickey; her sister, Ruth Reasor of Mason City; two nephews, Michael Ford and Lynn Reasor; nieces, Nancy Schwab and her family, Shirley Yont, Rene Saldana and her family; and many great-nieces nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delos G. "Rick" Rickey; five sisters, Cecile Sulteen, Lola Sawtelle, Gladys Oldfield, Vera Thomas, Edna Ford; two brothers, Manley and Lawrence Thomas; two nieces, one nephew, and one great-niece.

Robert L.  ‘Bob' Brown


MASON CITY — Robert L. "Bob" Brown, 77, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E., died Monday (Nov. 30, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Robert L. "Bob" Brown Memorial Fund.

Bob was born Sept. 20, 1927, in San Francisco, Calif., the son of Walter and Marie (Busse) Brown. He was raised in Tucson, Ariz., and moved to Mason City in 1967.

Bob took an announcing position with KGLO Radio and TV. He remained with KGLO radio until his retirement in 1998.

Bob was an avid golfer and following his retirement, a tree was planted on the 4th hole at Highland Park Golf Course in his honor by River City Trees.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and active in the community as a Little League coach and Cub Scout leader. He also served as master of ceremonies at many local events.

Bob was given numerous awards through the years from the American Heart Association, United Way, North Iowa Mental Health Association, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of North Iowa and most recently the North Iowa Band Festival Klempnauer Award.

Bob always had a story to tell and his quick wit and smiling face will be missed by many.

Bob is survived by his children, Steve Brown and wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake, Dan Brown of Iowa City, Michael Brown of Mason City, Donna Brown of Mason City and Christopher Brown of Mason City; grandchildren, Tony Brown and wife, Bridget, Tyler, Kala, Kirsten and Derek.

Bob's parents preceded him in death.

Mildred Arndorfer


WESLEY — Mildred Arndorfer, 92, of Wesley, died early Thursday morning (Dec. 2, 2004) at Algona Good Samaritan Communities.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, with Father Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 9:45 a.m.

Mildred Loebig Arndorfer, daughter of John and Anna Lickteig Loebig, was born Dec. 6, 1911, in Wesley, Iowa. She received her education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Wesley.

On Sept. 10, 1930, Mildred was united in marriage to Leonard Arndorfer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley.

Mildred was an active member of St. Joseph's Guild, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Joseph Church Choir and took pride in laundering the altar linens and cleaning the church sanctuary.

She was a charter member of the Prairie Neighbor Homemakers Club, as well as being active in the Kossuth County Women's Chorus, Hancock County 4-H County Committee and the Hancock Democratic Party.

Mildred enjoyed playing cards and entertaining family and friends in her home.

She is survived by one son, Dan Arndorfer and wife, Marianne, of Marion; and one daughter, Sister Vicky Arndorfer of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, on Aug. 14, 1996; her parents; a brother, Victor Loebig; and a sister, Marie Doughan on Nov. 8, 2004.

Clarence Conrad Johnson


MASON CITY — Clarence Conrad Johnson, 86, of 12 N. Willow Green Court, died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Mr. Steve Meyers of the United Church of God, Austin, Minn., officiating. Interment will held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Bricelyn Lutheran Cemetery, Bricelyn, Minn.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

Clarence was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Bricelyn, Minn., the son of Christ and Nora Johnson.

He was baptized and confirmed at Bricelyn Lutheran Church.

He married Lillian Beaver on Dec. 9, 1939, in Bricelyn, Minn. Clarence farmed near Bricelyn from 1939-1951, then went to work for Johnson's Feed Supply in Northwood, before becoming co-owner of Hy-Cross Hatchery Co. of Mason City, until retiring after 25 years of service.

After retirement, Clarence and his wife, Lillian, enjoyed golfing, fishing, dancing and spending their winters in Arizona and Texas.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters, Vivian and husband, Don Achenbach, of Seneca, Wis., and Mary and husband, Peter Jorgensen, of Decorah; grandchildren, Mark, Mike, and Greg Sunde, Zach Jensen, and Sara Nottestad; great-grandchildren, Raymond, Marcus, Lane, Dallas, Savannah, and Joseph; brother, Allen and wife Edna Johnson of Janesville, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elwood Johnson.

Cleo Marian Gullickson


NORTHWOOD — Cleo Marian Gullickson, 87, of Northwood, died on Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood.

Cleo M. Juhl was born Aug. 22, 1917, near Waltham, Minn., to Nicholas Paulson Juhl and Bertha Mae (Hadsell) Juhl. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, Northwood as a young adult.

Until the last months of eighth grade she attended rural schools in the Burchinal, Rockwell and Mason City areas. She completed grade school in six years and graduated from Northwood High School at age 16.

Cleo married C. Donald Gullickson at the Lutheran parsonage in Mason City on Feb. 22, 1936. She and Donald lived and farmed near Northwood until Donald's death in 1970.

She moved to Northwood in 1971, living in her home there until July 1989, when she moved to Maple Court Apartments where she lived until her death. She was a devoted helpmate to her husband on the farm, a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother throughout her life.

Maxine Laidley Morris


MESERVEY — Maxine Laidley Morris, 77, passed away Monday (Nov. 29, 2004) at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Memorial service for Maxine Morris will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with Pastor Rose Marie Calderon-Khan officiating. Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated.

Maxine Morris was born April 18, 1927, in Estherville, Iowa, to Lawrence and Blanche Laidley. Maxine married Marvin (Pat) Morris on July 3, 1946, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home in Meservey, Iowa, on the family farm.

Upon retiring, the couple spent their summers on Big Pelican Lake in Minnesota and their winters in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Maxine loved to golf, fish, garden, and bird watch.

She belonged to Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey.

On July 19, 2004, she moved to Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa.

Maxine is survived by her children, Rick Morris and his wife, Mary, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Terry Morris of Belmond, and Marsha Ingebretson and her husband, Mike, of Onawa; six sisters, Lorraine Eddy of Swaledale, Marilyn Hinderaker and her husband, Les, of Story City, Janet Nessa and her husband, Duane, of Garden City, Janice Brandt and her husband, Kenneth, of Hubbard, Maridee Ward and her husband, Dennis, of Belmond, and Judy Laidley of Mt. Gilead, N.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Tod Morris and his fiancee, Kathy of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Amy Brock of Champion, Minn., Wendy Georgeson and her husband, Jeff, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Willie Morris and his friend, Leah, of Meservey, Waylon Morris and his wife, Linzie, of Belmond, Brandon Ingebretson and his wife, Eliza, of Omaha, Neb., and Megan Ingebretson of Houston, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Rickie, Breanna, Nathan and Alexis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Harvey Polsdofer; and her beloved husband, Pat, who passed away Feb. 16, 1994.

MASON CITY — Evelyn A. Kephart, 97, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Bill Kanne officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation for Evelyn will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Evelyn was born Sept. 5, 1907, the daughter of Louis C. and Ellen (Piel) Crepow in Mason City. She attended school in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Glen J. Kephart on March 28, 1925, in Austin, Minn.

Evelyn worked for several retail stores in Mason City including Merkels, Gildners, and Bergos.

Evelyn was a lifetime member of First Christian Church where she was active in the women's circle. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Evelyn prided herself on never missing an election and furthered her interest by becoming an election worker, she even voted in this last election.

During the 1940s, Evelyn played and managed the Mason City Independent Basketball Team. She also coached two seasons of basketball at St. Joseph's High School.

Evelyn volunteered at Mercy Hospital, logging more than 1,500 volunteer hours. She was a regular volunteer at the Community Kitchen and did so since its beginning.

Evelyn had a real love for quilting, knitting and playing bridge; she was even quilting and playing bridge just two weeks ago.

She loved spending the summers at Clear Lake and especially enjoyed the Thursday afternoon coffee group at the I.O.O.F. Home.

The family would like to thank Mary Jane Porter for being a true, kind friend and caregiver and Ann Moore for her many special visits. Sincere thanks to Sharon Olson, who visited Evelyn many times, making sure her hair was always nice and to Lisa Balduf, who took time to visit Evelyn often.

A very special thanks to Hospice of North Iowa for the exceptional care and concern that Evelyn received.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Tom Kephart and wife, Sue, of Holt, Mich.; son-in-law, Cooney Balduf of Madrid; her eight grandchildren, Todd Kephart, Candy Hinderman, Blain, Barry and Brent Balduf, Lorie Gray, Stacey Barry and Kelly Kephart; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

NEW HAMPTON — William H. Eickhoff, 82, of Bassett died Thursday (Dec. 2, 2004) at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home of natural causes.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton with the Rev. Gary Olson, chaplain at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield, Iowa.

William Henry Eickhoff was born Sept. 26, 1922, near Frederika, Iowa, the son of William J. and Bertha (Schroeder) Eickhoff. He attended country school near his family's home.

Following his schooling he farmed for a short time with his family until he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 14, 1942. He served during World War II in the 101st Airborne Division. On Jan. 28, 1946, he was honorably discharged.

After returning from the service William resided in Chicago for a brief time before moving to Plainfield. While living in Plainfield, William met Beula Ziehe and the couple was united in marriage on Dec. 31, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Following their marriage the couple resided in Plainfield for 11 years, and later moving to an acreage three miles east and three miles south for another 11 years.

The couple then moved to New Hampton where they resided for three years before moving to a farm in Bassett in 1966 where he was currently residing.

Besides farming, William also operated Eickhoff Lines, a trucking company he operated out of Bassett.

He enjoyed his family, children, grandchildren and brothers and sister.

William also enjoyed fishing, traveling, horses, and in his younger years he enjoyed singing and performing.

William is survived by his six daughters, Monica Eickhoff of Decorah, Judith Jordan of Plainview, Minn., Linda (Jim) Price of Helena, Mont., Wynette (Jim) Hill of Shell Rock, Kathy (Jerry) Groschens of Plymouth, and Hope Eickhoff of Shell Rock; a son, Tom (Peggy) Eickhoff of Charles City; a son-in-law, Olu Martins of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Gene Eickhoff of Sumner; two sisters, Dorothy Swain and Barbara Frost, both of Missouri; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Beula, (Dec. 25, 2001), a daughter Pam Martins; two sisters, Ruth Ziehe and Chrystel Vorwald; two brothers, Karl Eickhoff and Robert Eickhoff.

MASON CITY — Robert L. "Bob" Brown, 77, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E. died Monday (Nov. 30, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Bob was born Sept. 20, 1927, in San Francisco, Calif., the son of Walter and Marie (Busse) Brown. He was raised in Tucson, Ariz., and moved to Mason City in 1967.

Bob took an announcing position with KGLO Radio and TV. He remained with KGLO radio until his retirement in 1998.

Bob was an avid golfer and following his retirement a tree was planted on the 4th hole at Highland Park Golf Course in his honor by River City Trees.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and active in the community as a little league coach and Cub Scout leader.

He also served as master of ceremonies at many local events. Bob was given numerous awards through the years from the American Heart Association, United Way, North Iowa Mental Health Association, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of North Iowa and most recently the North Iowa Band Festival Klempnauer Award.

Bob always had a story to tell and his quick wit and smiling face will be missed by many.

Bob is survived by his friend and former wife, Linda Huegli of Tucson, Ariz.; children, Steve Brown and wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake, Dan Brown and fiancée, Marcia Hoffbauer, of Iowa City, Michael Brown of Mason City, Donna Brown of Mason City and Christopher Brown of Mason City; grandchildren, Tony Brown and wife, Bridget, Tyler, Kala, Kirsten and Derek.

NASHUA — Peter May, 43, of Nashua, died Saturday (Dec. 4, 2004) at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

On Nov, 23, 1991, he was united in marriage to Sandra Knapp of Mequon, Wis., in Cedarburg, Wis. In 1992, Peter and Sandy moved to Charles City, where Peter was employed by Cambrex Chemical in Charles City.

Peter enjoyed golfing, traveling and above all was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Peter will be sadly missed by his wife, Sandy, of Nashua; two stepsons, Tony Knapp of Charles City, and Bruce Knapp of Grafton, Wis.; brothers and sisters, Bill (Diane) May and Mike May (Phil Grasty), all of Cedar Grove, Wis., Noreen (Ken) Wall of Owosso, Mich., and Marge (Terry) Steinert of Charles City; a sister-in- law, Debbie (Jim) Hill of Mayville, Wis.; a brother-in-law, John (Patti) Liss of Grafton, Wis.; mother-in-law, Theresa Cyra of Germantown, Wis.; many nieces and nephews, and his dog, Badger.

Dora Hedwig Uker was born Sept. 18, 1916, in rural Nora Springs. She was one of five children born to Hans Peter and Katherinea (Witt) Paulsen. Dora lived in the Rockford and Nora Springs area all her life.

On July 20, 1935, Dora was united in marriage to Roger C. Uker in Mason City. They enjoyed spending time with one another and going for car rides. The couple became the proud parents of a son, Richard, and a daughter, Mary.

In Dora's earlier years, she was employed as a nurse's aide at the Rockford Nursing Home. However, most of her life she was content to tending to the care of her family and home.

Dora treasured time among her friends at the Senior Citizens Center and the enjoyment of playing cards with the Royal Neighbors of America Card Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Dora is described by her family as a very kind and hard-working woman. She was independent and spunky and was never shy about "saying what was on her mind." Dora was a very nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She looked forward to family gatherings and loved to cook and bake. Her family claims, "She was a fabulous cook and they always knew the food would be great at Grandma's!" They recall Dora's specialties of pies, angel food birthday cakes, homemade cookies, air pie and German pastries. Dora was known not to use recipes when creating her baked and cooked goods, so most of her dishes will forever remain a secret.

Some of Dora's favorite leisure activities and interests included putting jigsaw puzzles together, cross-stitching and tending to her flower gardens. She seemed to have a green thumb with plants and had a fondness for growing Christmas cacti and Bleeding Hearts.

Dora will be missed dearly by her family and friends who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her five grandchildren: Ryan (Charlet) Uker of Rockford, Roger (Michelle) Uker of Rockford, Shawn (Jackie) Uker of Nora Springs, Randy Lackore of Iowa City and Paul (Peg) Lackore of Nebraska. She will also be fondly remembered by her son-in-law, Cecil (Sandra) Lackore of Arizona; her daughter-in-law, Linda Uker of Rockford; her seven great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

LIME SPRINGS — William L. Gansen, 99, of Lime Springs, died of advanced age Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

William Lavern Gansen was born on Jan. 19, 1905, in Elma, the son of William J. and Elizabeth (Biwer) Gansen. He attended school in Elma.

On Jan. 31, 1928, he was united in marriage to Loretta Richardson at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. He farmed near Lime Springs, was in the sand and gravel business, and sold seed corn.

William is survived by his wife, Loretta; four children: Donald (Doris) of Clear Lake, Robert (June) of Rochester, Minn., James of Stenchfield, Minn., and Lois Bronner of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Ann Leibold of Venice, Calif.

Anna F. Litterer was born Sept. 17, 1922, in rural Riverton Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Fred and A. Marie Scheidecker, and died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She was baptized Oct. 15, 1922, at her parents' home, and confirmed May 9, 1937, at St. John Evangelical, Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. She received her education and graduated from Greene High School in 1942. She received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls.

On Sept. 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to Francis Lyle Brinkman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Anna accompanied her husband to the various military locations where he was stationed during World War II. Following his discharge, they returned to Greene, where they started farming on the Crabapple farm, remaining there until 1968, when they moved into their new home in town.

Anna and Francis enjoyed 10 winters in Mercedes, Texas.

Her interests included puzzles, card games, gardening and canning. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother whose paramount concern was the needs of her family. She was a very humble lady who provided deep inner strength for her loved ones.

She was a faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school and was a member of WELCA.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Sue Wheat of Greene; three sons, Gale Lee (Mary K.) Brinkman, Joe Francis (Sue) Brinkman, all of Greene, and Mark Henry (Carla) Brinkman of Williams-burg; nine grandchildren: Erin Brinkman and her fiance', Steve Mulder, John (Lindsay) Brinkman, Becky (Tim) Newton, Rachelle and Mary Wheat, and Megan, Lindsay, Nathan and Alison Brinkman; one great grandchild, Derek Brinkman; two sisters-in-law, Vera Litterer of Charles City and Mabel Litterer of Greene, and one brother-in-law, Bernard Horn of Nashua.

Anna leaves to join her husband, Francis, who died May 20, 2004; an infant son in 1945; a daughter, Kay F. Brinkman in 1949; one grandson, Allan Wheat in 1976; her parents; one sister, Eva Horn, and two brothers, Leonard Litterer and Louis Litterer.

Elvin A. Larson

FOREST CITY — Elvin A. Larson, 64, of Forest City, died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at his home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Barbara Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Elvin Arlo Larson was born in Forest City on March 23, 1940, the son of Elias and Anna (Werstein) Larson. He received his education in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1959. He then attended trade school for a year.

Elvin worked for Eames Construction, Peterson Construction Co. and the City of Forest City. He owned and operated Elvin Larson Construction for many years, building houses and doing remodeling. He also enjoyed restoring old autos and trucks. Elvin took great pride in his work.

On July 22, 1968, he married Sandra Bronsema. Elvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was active in 4-H and Pheasants Forever. He loved caring for his 40-acre "hobby farm," raising grain and livestock. He liked to go boating and fishing, and treasured time spent with his family. After two years of retirement, Elvin returned to work as an auto technician at Wal-Mart in Mason City.

Elvin is survived by his son, David Larson of Forest City; his daughter, DeEtta Larson of Mason City; his ex-wife and dear friend, Sandy Larson of Forest City; father-in-law, Frank Bronsema of Forest City; a sister, Eleanor (Gary) Sheldahl of Forest City; two brothers, Franklin (Marsha) Larson of Forest City and Louis (Joyce) Larson of Story City, and many nieces and nephews, Tom and Denise Larson, Ed Sheldahl and Brittney Sterner, Jennifer and Jeremy Jordahl, Tammy and Mitchell Daniels, DeAnna and Jerry HeWitt, Ursula and Jeff Hanselman, and Myrna, Deana and Kendra Larson.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard and Elmer; a sister, Lois; a nephew, Jon; a niece, Ann, and mother-in-law, Thelma Bronsema.

Tyler Molitor

OSAGE — Tyler Molitor, 15, of Osage, died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) of injuries he received in an auto accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Tyler was born April 10, 1989, in Spencer, the son of John and Kelley (Beatty) Molitor. Tyler was a student at Osage Community High School, where he was active in cross country, golf, baseball and basketball. He also participated in chorus, school plays and musicals. Tyler liked being with his friends, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Fred ‘Fritz' Bernhardt

MASON CITY — Fred "Fritz" Bernhardt, 88, of Mason City, died Thursday, (Dec. 2, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services for Fritz will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation for Fritz will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City and continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Fred "Fritz" Bernhardt was born Jan. 11, 1916, the son of Fred and Mary (Schmeider) Bernhardt, in Menomonee Falls, Wis. After Fritz was born, the family moved to St. Ansgar and then to Plymouth. Fritz attended schools in St. Ansgar and Mason City.

Fritz served in the United States Army during World War II in the 5th Armored Division. He drove a one-ton half truck in France, Belguim, Germany and Holland, hauling personnel for a recon unit during all kinds of weather and heavy combat conditions. Fritz served in the American, European, African and Middle Eastern theaters.

During the American Theater, he received the Silver Battle Star and three overseas battle stars. Also, during the European and African theaters, Fritz received the Bronze Star, Purple Ribbon, five battle stars and the Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal during the Middle Eastern Theater. He was ranked at a TEC 5 Technician prior to his honorable discharge from the service.

Fritz was united in marriage to Betty Barlow on Feb. 9, 1949, in Mason City. They farmed in the Plymouth and Rockwell areas for 27 years. After retiring from farming, Fritz and Betty came to Mason City in 1976. He then went to work for Curries Manufacturing for six years until his retirement.

Fritz was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and also a lifetime member both the D.A.V. and V.F.W. He was a fisherman, and he and Betty enjoyed 10 summers at their cabin at Lake Vermillion in Cook, Minn. Fritz also was a very talented woodcarver.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Mason City; a sister, Ruth Christiansen, and husband, Clyden, of Manly, and several nieces and nephews.

Fritz was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Hank, Victor, Herman, Gus and Edward, and two sisters, Lydia and Emma.

Leona Mayer

STACYVILLE — Leona Mayer, 93, of Stacyville died on Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Visitation Catholic Church.

Leona was born Dec. 9, 1910, at Stacyville, the eighth of nine children to Joseph and Josephine (Mueller) Mayer. She grew up on the family farm east of Stacyville. She moved with her parents to town in 1929, where she resided until Sept. 30, 2004, when she moved to the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Growing up, she was very active in 4-H, even having a grand champion holstein at the National Dairy Show in Memphis, Tenn., in 1927. Leona graduated from Visitation High School.

After graduation, she worked in various homes in the Osage/Stacyville area. She worked as a telephone operator until Stacyville converted to dial telephones in the late 1950s. She then worked at the Stacyville Savings Bank until her retirement in 1975.

Leona was a charter member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, serving in several offices, including treasurer for more than 40 years. She was very dedicated to her church. Leona was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary for 45 years.

After her retirement, she was able to enjoy gardening, especially roses and peonies. She was an avid sports fan, spending many summer nights watching "Charlies Angels" at the softball diamond. She never missed the TV action of the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Bulls, Iowa Hawkeyes and, the last several years, Tiger Woods. Her other joys were spending time with the great- and great-great nieces and nephews, knitting and slot machines. She would never miss her Monday "solo" game.

She never complained and found good in everything. While she was never a mother, she was a special "grandmother" to many and will be greatly missed.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Edward, Michael, Ernest, Ray, Herbert and Ralph, and two sisters, Martha Heimer and Marcella Mayer.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Angela Ginder; her caregiver and great-niece, Betty Blake, and a special nephew, Leon "Charlie" Heimer, all of Stacyville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Vern Peterson, 84, of Mason City and formerly of Thompson, died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Thompson. Pastor Wayne Squier will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. Military honors will be by the Thompson VFW Post 8408.
