CLEO C. FRENCH

MASON CITY — Cleo C. French, 77, of Mason City died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Lois Abel of the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established in Cleo’s name.

Cleo was born Nov. 15, 1925, the daughter of Leo and Clara (Hachmeister) Watrous in Orange Township, Iowa. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1943.

On July 14, 1951, Cleo was united in marriage to William M. French at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City and they spent many wonderful years together until William’s death on Feb. 24, 1972.

Cleo worked in Mason City at the Family Bowl for over 15 years. She then became a partial owner of Buffalo Lanes in Buffalo Center until she sold the business and retired in 1986.

Cleo enjoyed the time she spent at the bowling alley being able to cook and visit with so many people.

She was an avid Bingo player, loved to spend time dancing and gambling. Cleo was also known to be an avid Hawkeye Fan.

She was dearly loved by so many people and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, William E. French and wife, Denise, of Buffalo Center; her daughter, Kathy Rasmussen and husband, Robin, of Grafton; four grandchildren, Sgt. Wm. “Chip” French of Fort Wainwright, Alaska, Michael J. French of Belton, S.C., and Robby and Billy Jo Rasmussen of Grafton. two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Neva) Wood of West Des Moines, and Mrs. Harold (Verna) Pomeroy of Coon Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Ora “Bob” Watrous of Coon Rapids, and Evelyn Peterson of Colorado.

Cleo was preceded in death by her parents; husband William; and one brother, Lyle Waterous.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Vivian A. Nord, 85, of Rochester, died Tuesday (March 25, 2003) at Riverside Trace Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Linda Helberg officiating. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.

HAMPTON — Frieta M. Schlaman, 87, of Charlotte, N. C., formerly of Hampton, died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at NorthEast Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hampton Cemetery with the Rev. Dick Parker of the Hampton Neighborhood Bible Church, officiating.

EUGENE R. VIERS

GREENE — Funeral services for Eugene R. Viers, 93, of 407 1/2 Courtland St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel and will continue one hour before services on Thursday.

Eugene Robert Viers was born Sept. 9,1909, in Storm Lake, a son of Charles and Minnie (Fields) Viers, and died Monday (March 24, 2003) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Shortly after his father’s death, Gene, then age 11, went to live with his aunt and uncle on a ranch near Highmore, S.D. He was baptized at the Swedish Lutheran Church and received his education at Highmore.

As a young man he returned to lowa where he met and was united in marriage to Ruth Skillen on July 12, 1934, in Charles City. They made their home in the Greene area their entire marriage and to this union were born four sons.

He worked for D. C. Marsh and other area farmers for many years and was projectionist for the Greene Theater for 12 years.

He was sexton for the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene for 20 years and drove school bus for the Greene Community School District for five years. He retired in 1973.

Gene’s favorite pastime was fishing, fishing, and more fishing. His other interests included reading Westerns, gardening, feeding the birds, and riding his Snapper mower.

Those thankful for having shared his life include his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth of Greene; two sons, Jim (Jo) Viers of Rockwell City, and Dennis (Judy) Viers of Greene; two daughters-in-law, Joan Viers of Charles City and Ruth Viers of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren, Jim Viers of Rolfe, Carmen Smith of Rockwell City, Carol Sauceda of Fort Dodge, John Viers of Plainview, Neb., Donna (Richard) Marvel of Westminster, Colo., Darren Viers of Charles City, Nancy Simmons and Lisa Marie Viers both of Waterloo, Dale Dean Viers of Fort Madison, Debra Viers of Greene, and Michelle (Shane) Ott of Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.; 24 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Viers of Paramount, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, Kenneth Viers on May 8, 1998, and Robert D. “Butch” Viers on June 3, 2001; his grandson, Joseph Viers on Nov. 25, 1977; his parents, step-father Kenneth Houchin; and three brothers, Orlando “Bill” Viers, Milton Viers, and Harry Viers.

GENEVA — Ward Wallace Wagner, 67, of Geneva, died Monday (March 24, 2003) at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

ALGONA — Esther Wood, 80, of Algona, died Monday (March 24, 2003) at Fort Dodge Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

LESTER M. COLSON

ROCKWELL - Lester M. Colson, 83, of Rockwell, died Tuesday (March 25, 2003) at home, surrounded by his family, from complications of lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Lester M. Colson Memorial Fund.

Lester was born Feb. 5, 1920, on a small farm near Dunksburg, Mo., the son of Jesse and Eula Mae Colson.

Lester made his choice to serve God at the early age of 12 years old and was faithful to that commitment until he took his last breath.

He was married to LaVonne Roline on Nov. 10, 1944, while serving in the Army Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Colson was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for a short period of time. After tenant farming for approximately 12 years, he and LaVonne purchased the farm near Rockwell in 1962, where he spent the rest of his life. After retiring from farming, he ran a salvage operation from his home until 2002.

Lester was well-known in the area and surrounding areas as a hard working and honest man, and will be missed by all.

Lester is survived by his wife of 58 years, LaVonne; one son, Roger (Brenda) of Rockwell; three daughters, Marilyn (Harold) Nieuwenhuis of Des Moines, Janice (Frank) Ramirez of Mason City, and Marcia Colson of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth (Leslie) Printz of Midland, Texas, and Martha (Henry) Heins of Hampton; two brothers, Benjamin (Nadine) of Farley, Iowa, and Carl (Shirley) of Sedalia, Mo., and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Jr.. in infancy, and John R., and his parents.

BEAUFORT, S.C. - Margaret K. Hannon, 64, wife of Keith G. Hannan, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (March 25, 2003) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Helena's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, S.C. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Hannan was born May 14, 1938, in Newark, N.J., to the late Rev. John Henry Keene and Katherine Louise Bird Keene. She was a schoolteacher for the California Department of Education, and later was a co-owner and operator of North Iowa Golf Center with her husband.

She was an alumnus of the University of Michigan.

She was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church, where she served on the Vestry.

She is survived by her husband, Keith G. Hannon, of Beaufort, S.C.; two sons, Patrick J. Hannan, of Austin, Texas, and Benjamin T. Hannan, of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Karen Day, of Beaufort, S.C.; a brother, John S. Keene, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., and three grandchildren.

FLOYD - LaVerna Ruth Hansen, 89, of Indianapolis, Ind., and a former longtime resident of Floyd, passed away Monday (March 24, 2003) at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with Pastor Larry Hansen officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Saturday.

The family suggests that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society in memory of LaVerna R. Hansen.

LaVerna was born May 25, 1913, to James and Anna (Schaefer) Gunn at Wall Lake, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Arnold E. Hansen on May 25, 1934, at Nora Springs. The couple made their home in Floyd since 1944.

LaVerna is survived by a son, Larry D. Hansen and his wife, Carol, of Platte City, Mo., and a daughter, Shirley M. Bennett and her husband, James, of Indianapolis, Ind., with whom she had been living for a number of years. She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

LaVerna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold, and three sisters.

MASON CITY — Daryl D. Burgess, 74, of 1304 10th St. S.E., died Wednesday (March 26, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Daryl was born on Jan. 23, 1929, in Hanlontown, the son of Earl and Goldie (Mckee) Burgess. He graduated from Mason City High School and then entered the United States Army, serving as a Military Policeman during the Korean Conflict.

He was stationed in several areas during his 21 years of military service, including the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Daryl was united in marriage to Norma Johnson on May 20, 1954 and following his retirement from the Army, they moved to Mason City, where Daryl worked for Libby Owen Ford as a supervisor.

Daryl enjoyed visiting over coffee at Schill’s Maid-rite in Mason City, working on small engines and tinkering around on cars and trucks. He also enjoyed taking care of the lawn, chickens and the Wednesday coffees at Lavonne’s residence in Plymouth.

Daryl will be sadly missed by his daughter, Barbara Carr of Mason City; his step-son, Gary Burgess and his wife, Judy, of Pierce, Colo.; his best friend and loving companion, Lavonne Gregory, of Plymouth; his sister, Earlene Boyer and her husband, Cliff, of Plymouth; and numerous other relatives and friends. He will also be missed by Herkey, Thomas, and Ted E. Bear.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Norma.

SELMA ESTES

NORTHWOOD — Selma (Olson) Estes, 95, of Northwood, died Wednesday (March 26, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S. in Northwood, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Selma was born on a farm north of Northwood on June 2, 1907 to Carl G. and Ida Iverson Olson. She was baptized on Aug. 3, 1907, at the Trinity Norwegian Lutheran Church and confirmed on May 21, 1922, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Selma and her brother, Clifford, were stricken with polio in 1910. She was crippled by the disease and looked forward to meeting Jesus and getting her new body with good legs with which to dance and walk.

She was married to William C. Estes on Dec. 20, 1927. They were married 58 years at the time of his death in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sons, Clifton, Lloyd and Gilman; one grandson, Richard; a sister, Gunda; and one brother, Clifford.

Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Peterson and her husband, Merle, of Hanlontown; three sons, Wayne Estes and his wife, Dorothy, of Northwood, Sheldon Estes of Northwood, and Harold Estes and his wife, Kathy, of Forest City; one niece, Marilyn Ulve; seven grandchildren, Rick and Deb Peterson of Mantorville, Minn., Darla and Dennis Smidt of Humboldt, Lisa and Tech Sgt. Ted Peckham of Holloman AFB, New Mexico, Tamie and Sgt. First Class Richard Fish, serving with the 1133rd Transportation, of Corwith; Ken and Connie Estes of Northwood, Diane and Dale Simon of Albert Lea, Minn., Julie and Chris Carlson of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Christopher Estes of Phoenix, Ariz., Carrie Estes of Mount Vernon, Amber Estes of Northwood, Sr. Airman Brandon Hill of Luke AFB, Phoenix, Ariz., Adam Hill of Phoenix, Ariz., Nathan Smidt of Humboldt, James, Craig and Jack Peterson of Mantorville, Minn., Dylan and Heather Peckham of Holloman AFB, New Mexico, Devin and Amanda Fish of Corwith.

Selma will be remembered with fond memories of loving her family with all her heart.

TRUMAN DUANE HENGESTEG

NORTHWOOD — Truman Duane Hengesteg, 71, son of Elmer and Sophie (Sandman) Hengesteg of rural Northwood, died Thursday (March 27, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Inurnment will be in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors by “Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779” of Northwood.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 - First Ave. S. in Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

According to his wishes and the wishes of his family his body was cremated.

Truman Duane Hengesteg was born on Nov. 15, 1931, and raised on the farm in Hartland Township near Northwood that his great-grandparents purchased in 1858, the son of Elmer and Sophie (Sandman) Hengesteg.

He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. He attended and received his education in the Northwood-Kensett Community school system, graduating from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1949.

Truman was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 12, 1952, in Des Moines and served overseas in the Korean Conflict with Headquarters company 1st Battalion 279th Infantry, and received various medals including the Korean service medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, two overseas United Nations service medals, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. Truman was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Feb. 11, 1954.

After his honorable discharge he returned to the Northwood area and farmed all his life. Truman was awarded “Outstanding Young Farmer” by the Northwood Chamber of Commerce.

He was united in marriage to JoAnn Sharp on Feb. 20, 1954. After their marriage Truman and JoAnn and their three children, Cinda, David and Sue, kept busy with farming, church, school and 4-H activities until JoAnn’s death in 1971.

He was united in marriage to Bonnie (Herman) Sandberg on Aug. 13, 1973, in Glenville, Minn.

Truman was a lifelong member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church, serving on the church council. He was a member of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood, Elks Lodge #813 in Albert Lea, Minn. and was on the board of directors at the Northwood State Bank.

Walter enjoyed visiting with friends and family, going to the casino, building bird houses, and feeding all types of wild life.

Walter is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons, Darrell Kingsbury and his wife, Betty, of Jonesville, Texas, Paul Kingsbury and his wife, Fay, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lora Harms, of Long Beach, Calif.

Leona was born June 21, 1899, the daughter of Milton and Elsie (Whitten) Ramsey, in Rowan. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to North Dakota, where it spent 10 years before returning to Rowan. On Feb. 6, 1918, Leona was united in marriage to Christian Klemensen in Belmond. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Latimer, rural Clear Lake and then to Mason City.

Leona was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, participating in the choir, singing solos and being involved in WELCA and the Pricilla Circle. Leona was also a member of the Home Improvement Club in Clear Lake and the Senior Citizens Center. She had a passion for leading Bible study and writing in her personal journal. Leona enjoyed playing many different games over her lifetime but was especially fond of bingo and Skip-Bo, which she played with her family every Sunday.

At age 90, Leona would walk over to the Good Shepherd Health Center to assist the "old ladies" with their Bingo games. She also took one of her final vacations to Dollywood and had a great time. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting and sewing her children's clothes.

Those thankful for having shared in Leona's life include her three children, Mrs. Edwin (Helen) Schultz of Mason City, Mrs. George (Pearl) Simkins of Clear Lake and Mr. Harold (Lorraine) Klemensen of Clarion; two sisters, Mrs. W.E. (Frances) Lewis of Mason City and Mrs. Mac (LaVonne) Churchill of California; one brother, Mr. Dale Ramsey of Trenton, Mo.; one sister-in- law, Mrs. Martin (Thelma) Klemensen of Mason City; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 17-step-great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and 15 step-great-great-grandchildren.

Fern Helgeson passed away Friday (March 28, 2003) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Fern Elaine Helgeson was born July 31, 1922, in Joice, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Dahlby) Kaasa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. She graduated from Joice High School in 1940 and was the valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Waldorf College, graduating in 1942. While attending college, she sang in the a capella choir.

Following graduation, she taught elementary school in Hanlontown and Crystal Lake, Iowa. In 1946, she started her career at the Atwood-Larson Grain Commission firm in Minneapolis. She also worked at the Joice elevator. She then worked for 13 years at the Farmers Savings Bank in Joice.

On Oct. 14 1951, she married Ernest Helgeson at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. Together they lived in Joice, where they raised their three daughters.

She was a member of the Joice Study Club for 20 years, treasurer of the Joice School District for six years and was a longtime member of circles and Ladies Aid at church

In November of 1985, they moved to Lake Mills, where she was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

She was an avid historian. She started scrapbooking while in high school and maintained this hobby throughout her life. She saved newspaper clippings from the activities of her family and friends, and local and regional stories of interest. She also chronicled the family history through her scrap albums. She was a careful and diligent family historian, and documented the history in a booklet entitled "Stories of My Family." Other favorite activities included bird watching, singing in choral groups, collecting recipes and entertaining her grandchildren.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Rochester to be nearer her children and grandchildren. There she found a new community of friends at the Shorewood Senior Campus.

Fern passed away Friday night, March 28, 2003, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, She is survived by three daughters: Janet Bye of San Antonio, Texas, Emily Vetter and her husband, Harold, of Rochester, Minn., Linda Toussaint and her husband, Michael, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and six grandchildren, David and Julia Bye, Sarah and Rachel Vetter, and Andrew and Brandon Toussaint.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest, and one brother, Orian.

HAYWARD, Minn. - Funeral service for Darlene B. Adams of Hayward, Minn., will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alden, Minn. Pastor Peter Soli will officiate. Interment will be in the Alden Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Darlene died Wednesday, (March 26, 2003) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. She was 68 years old.

Darlene was born Aug. 12, 1934, in Mason City to John and Alberta (Everhart) Berding. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Grafton. She graduated from Grafton High School.

Darlene was united in marriage to Richard Adams in Mason City. She lived in both Des Moines and Mason City before movng to Alden, Minn., in 1969. Darlene later resided in Hayward, Minn. Darlene was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alden. She worked as a waitress for Club 90, Alden, and Hayward Café, Hayward.

Darlene's hobbies included gardening, reading, crocheting, cooking, fishing and traveling, but her real joy was in spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Darlene is survived by four children: Randy Adams and special friend, Judy, of Albert Lea, Minn., Sherri Adams of Hayward, Minn., Ronald Adams and his wife, Paula, of Albert Lea, Minn., Lisa Adams and fiancée, Robert Mortenson, of New Richland, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Stephani and Stacia, Amanda, Bryce and Chelsea, Ashley, Jamie, Chad and Carrie; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Colby; six brothers, Herman "Bud" Berding and his wife, Prudy, of Mason City, LeRoy Berding and his wife, Caroline, of Mason City, Benny Berding and his wife, Muriel, of Mason City, Roger Berding and his wife, Sharon, of Plymouth, Johnny Berding and his wife, Marge, of Plymouth, Darrel Berding and his wife, Carol, of Mason City; four sisters, LaVonne Blackmer and her husband, Dean, of Mason City, Bonnie Reyerson and her husband, Harold, of Alden, Minn., Shirley Berding of Mason City, and Lorraine Sailor and friend, Craig Brackey, of Albert Lea, Minn.; special friend, Gordon Olson, of Wells, Minn.; sister-in-law, Elaine Berding of Mason City; many nieces and nephews, and her special cat, Kitty Kat.

LATIMER - Earl Johansen, 86, of Latimer, died on Saturday (March 29, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa East Campus in Mason City.

Earl Johansen was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Latimer, the son of Chris and Minnie (Riis) Johansen.

He received his education in Latimer country schools and was later married to Neva Iseminger on May 19, 1945, in Spencer.

He made his living as a farmer and was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter.

Earl had a love for horses, his family and especially his grandchildren.

Wayne was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Erwin L. and Alice (Remery) Wieck. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1950. He later graduated from the Iowa Military Academy. He was a colonel in the United States Army National Guard and taught at the Iowa Military Academy, retiring in 1985 after 32 years.

Wayne married Ila Emerald on Feb. 14, 1954, in Des Moines. He was manager of A.M.F. Western Tool in Des Moines.

He and Ila made their home in Clear Lake after Wayne retired.

Wayne was chairman of Clear Lake Planning and Zoning Commission, a probation officer for Cerro Gordo County, past chairman of S.C.O.R.E. (Service Corps of Retired Executives), a member of S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), Clear Lake Noon Lions, Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed attending the Chamber’s After Hours events.

Wayne will be missed by his wife, Ila Wieck, of Clear Lake; three children, Jeff Wieck and his wife, Ann, of Des Moines, Gregg Wieck and his wife, Jody, Cedar Rapids, and Carla Barnes, Lone Tree, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother, Doug Wieck, West Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

PAUL G. TREES

BELMOND — Paul G. Trees, age 75, of Belmond, a lifelong resident and farmer, died Friday (March 28, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E., Belmond. The Rev. Rod Hopp will be officiating.

Burial with full military honors performed by the Rowan and Belmond veterans organizations will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home and continue from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials may be given to the Belmond VFW, Belmond Boy Scouts, or Wright County Hospice.

Paul George Trees was born April 12, 1927, on his parents’ farm in rural Wright County, Belmond, the son of Vernon M. (Mike) and Violet Ida (Starnes) Trees. He attended and graduated from Belmond High School in 1945.

Paul later served stateside in the United States Army during World War II. Following his tenure of military service he returned to Belmond where he was employed at the Tudor Garage and Implement Dealership and began his life long career of farming on the Trees family farm. Paul raised livestock, including pigs, poultry, and peacocks, as well as crops.

Paul was united in marriage to Marjorie Estella Wigg on July 30, 1948, at Clear Lake. They were partners in life for nearly 55 years.

Paul was a dedicated farmer throughout his entire life.

He was an avid outdoorsman whose passion was fishing. Paul, Marj, his family, and friends had been on many fishing excursions. Their trips included fishing in Canada during many late summers.

They also spent many years at their winter home in Kissee Mills, Mo., where Paul was an avid bass fisherman. Paul was the kind of person who had the knack to catch fish even when they were not biting.

Paul had a great love for his Vizsla hunting dogs. In the later years of his life he could be seen on his skid loader, shotgun in hand, hunting pheasants while the dogs worked the fields for him.

Mr. Trees was a man who enjoyed his family and being with others. He looked forward to hosting family and neighborhood fish fries and hog roasts. He loved to do woodworking and build things. He was very proud of his work and had built many of the dwellings on his farm including the family home, cabinetry in the house, a farrowing house, and various other outbuildings.

Paul was a man who enjoyed helping others with carpentry and various other woodworking projects.

He had been active in various roles with the Belmond Boy Scout programs and had served in leadership positions.

He was a past member of the Odd Fellows who were also the chartering partner of the Scout programs. Paul belonged to the Rowan American Legion Post.

He will be remembered by his family for being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

The family will cherish memories of his wonderful stories, wit, and humor and think of him often when they are on a lake or river fishing, or listening to a WHO talk radio broadcast and the farm markets.

Later he graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn.

Charlie was united in marriage to Neva Fuhrman on February 14, 1952, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage. He was a postal carrier in Osage for 28 years, retiring in 1979.

He enjoyed farming, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, fishing and being with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Neva Hungerford, of Osage; three sons, Tim Hungerford and friend, Lisa, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Mark Hungerford and his wife, Cyndi, of West Burlington, Iowa, Todd Hungerford and his wife, Tina, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two daughters, Ann Kienzle and friend, Philip, of Riceville, Mary Mackelprang of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Jim Hungerford and his wife, Wilma, of Osage; sister, Betty DeMar of Bloomington, Minn.; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Nikki, Jared, and Gavin Hungerford, Shane and Samantha Mackelprang; two step-grandchildren, Travis and Mandy Dodd.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jean Hungerford.
