MARGARET JEAN GREEN

CHAPIN — Margaret Jean Green, 83, of Chapin, died Sunday (March 9, 2003) at her home in Chapin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chapin United Methodist Church in Chapin, with the Rev. Dick Parker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Old Chapin Cemetery at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Margaret Jean was born on Sept. 16, 1919, in Hampton, a daughter of Wayland Stanley and Amy Estelle (Heuermann) Little. She was raised in Hampton and graduated from the Hampton High School.

She was united in marriage to Lindy Green on Nov. 3, 1941, in Atchison, Kan.

She was a part-time motel desk clerk at the Gold Key Motel in Hampton.

She enjoyed camping with the Wigwam and Wagon Club.

She is survived by a son, Lewis “Gene” E. and his wife, Heidemarie Green, of El Paso, Texas; a daughter, Dorathy Mae and her husband, John Hodgin, of Seneca,S.C.; sister, Elizabeth Hempel, of New Brighton, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; one step-great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one step-great-grandson.

MASON CITY — Mary E. Grefe, 86, of Mason City died Saturday (March 8, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Steven Waughtal, Director of Pastoral Care at Good Shepherd officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsyvnia Ave. Mason City and one hour before time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Mary E. Grefe Memorial Fund.

Mary was born Aug. 18, 1916, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Lewis E. and Georgia (Woodward) Johnson.

At the age of two, Mary moved to Mason City with her family and she lived in the Manly-Mason City area until her death.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1936.

Mary was married to Arthur F. Grefe on June 5, 1937, in Mason City.

She is survived by sisters, Ann Crawford, of Plymouth, Wash., Ruth Corlew, of Newton; sister-in-law, Helen Grefe, of Manly; brother-in-law, Robert Grefe, of Hampton; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents, husband, sister, Gladys Stolle; brothers, George E. Johnson and Earl Johnson.

LAKE MILLS — Avanel M. Hanson, 91, of Lake Mills, died Sunday (March 9, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Mills Evangelical Synod Church, with the Rev. Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial will be in Somber Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — David M. Hoover, 67, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died on Feb. 2, 2003.

Burial was in Fort Wayne, Ind.

ROBERT ‘BOB’ JAMES JANSSEN

NORA SPRINGS — Robert “Bob” James Janssen, 72, of 22314 260th St., Mason City, died Saturday (March 8, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Cemetery in Kiester, Minn. with military honors by the Kiester American Legion Post #454.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs and then one hour before the service on Wednesday at the Church.

Family suggests memorials to the Robert Janssen Memorial fund.

Bob was born on July 4, 1930, in Buffalo Center, the son of Dick and Jane (Friesenberg) Janssen. He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict.

Bob married Thelma Soma on July 18, 1954, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Kiester, Minnesota. They resided in the Kiester area until 1961 when they moved to a farm outside of Garner. He farmed in Garner for five years before moving to the acreage west of Nora Springs in 1966. He lived on this farm until his death.

He worked his whole life in farming either on his own or for other farmers. In his later years he owned a hydraulic repair business and was known for being available at all hours for the farmers when they were busy in the field.

He enjoyed spending his mornings in town having coffee and talking to the guys, and attending auctions in the area.

Bob is survived by his wife, Thelma Janssen, of Mason City; four children, Michael Janssen and his wife, Suzi, of Mercedes, Texas, Mark Janssen and his wife, Sue, of Mason City, Terry Janssen and his wife, Bonnie, of Waterloo, and Diana Lage and her husband, Michael, of Sheffield; nine grandchildren, Jim Bridgewater, Ashley Janssen, Jennifer Janssen, Amy Janssen, John Robert Janssen, Sara Janssen, Susie Janssen, Brandon Lage and Tyler Lage; two brothers, John Janssen and his wife, Harriet, of Worthington, Minn. and Ray Janssen and his wife, Marilyn, of Albert Lea, Minn.; half sister, Marcy James; half brothers, Eddie Janssen and Art Janssen, all of Roswell, New Mexico; step brother, Glenn Whittmus and his wife, Arlys, of Fairmont, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Arlene Janssen, of Harlingen, Texas and Wilhelmine Janssen, of Granada, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Minnie; infant daughter; one sister, Christine Dahle; two brothers, Richard and Ernie Janssen; one step brother, Albert Whittmus; and one half sister, Pat French.

RAYMOND CHARLES MIX

CLEAR LAKE — Raymond Charles Mix, 81, 817 9th Ave. S. in Clear Lake, died Monday (March 10, 2003) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen, officiating. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet friends one hour preceding the services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Raymond C. Mix Memorial Fund.

Raymond was born on March 31, 1921, in Middleton, Minn., the son of Richard and Martha (Kinnan) Mix. He attended schools in Mason City.

Ray married Clara Larson on May 3, 1941, in Waterloo.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II, 1944-1945, in the Pacific as a motor machinist mate third class.

After the war he worked at Armour for 32 years in the box room.

Raymond loved gardening, fishing, especially ice fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed building his house; it was always a gathering place.

He enjoyed cooking and baking cookies. He loved his family. Raymond was a very hard worker. He was a member of the Armour Union. His special love was his dog Suzie.

Raymond is survived by three children, Nancey Jean Guhl and her husband, John, of Clear Lake, Mary Lou Hoffman and her husband, Louis, of Mason City, and Larry Raymond Mix and his wife, Claudette, of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren, Alan Patro, Joleen Jensen, Mark Hoffman, Todd Hoffman, Laurie Richards, Adam Mix, Amos Mix and Marc Gregerson; and 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Mix and his wife, Beverly, of Waterloo.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara, on April 30, 1988; one brother Harold; and two sisters, Leona and Dorothy.

LAKE MILLS — Avanel M. Hanson, 91, of Lake Mills, died Sunday (March 9, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Avanel Margarit Hanson was born on April 19, 1911, in Worth County, Silver Lake Township, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Anna (Holstad) Harmon.

On Feb. 19, 1939, she was united in marriage to Sven R. Hanson. To this union two children were born, Marilyn and Steven. Duaine Harmon, a nephew, became a brother and son to the family in 1946.

Avanel enjoyed needle works and playing cards, crafts, gardening and being wife and mom.

She was an active member of Somber Lutheran Church and served on various committees. She worked at Fleetguard in Lake Mills for 13 years.

Avanel is survived by her loving husband, Sven Hanson, of Lake Mills; three children, Marilyn and her husband, James Brosdahl, of Parkersburg, Steven and his wife, Sandy Hanson, of Byers, Colo. and Duaine and his wife, Ellyn Harmon, of Lake Mills; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Kim and her husband Wayne Lefranz and their children, Ashely, Brandon and Tanner of Parkersburg; Ann and her husband, Steven Hersom and their children, Calvin, Carl Sven and Maddie, of Laurens; Douglas and his wife, Rhonda Harmon and their children, Chalsey, Derek and Jerod, of Lake Mills; Donica and her husband, Douglas Arneson and their children, Samantha and Charlie, of Joice; Steven Jr. and his wife, Karen Hanson, of Fort Hood, Texas; two brothers, Elmer D. Harmon, of Lake Mills; Marvin and his wife, Hazel Harmon, of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Muir, of Harlowton, Mont.; along with several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

JOHN HENRY HAYUNGS

RUDD — John Henry Hayungs, 80, of Rudd, died Monday (March 10, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at the Rudd United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, and for one hour prior to the services Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the John H. Hayungs Memorial Fund.

John was born on Nov. 27, 1922, in Grundy County, Iowa, a son of John and Jennie (Konken) Hayungs. He received his education in Parkersburg and Dougherty.

The family moved to Marble Rock after John’s father retired from farming.

John entered the United States Army in February of 1942 and served during World War II. He returned to farming in Iowa after his discharge in October 1945.

John was united in marriage to Betty Raymond on Aug. 2, 1946, at the Lutheran Church in Greene. To this union, six children were born.

They moved to the Rudd area in 1955, where John worked as a farm laborer and then for the Rudd Lumber Yard, until it went out of business. He then became a driver for Hoover’s Hatchery for 22 years, retiring in 2002.

John enjoyed many years of camping, doing puzzle books, playing cards and woodworking. He also was a longtime Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

John was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, serving as trustee chairman for 14 years, providing much of the plumbing and paneling work in the parsonage, and receiving a life membership pin from the Rudd U.M.W. for his dedication to the church.

He was a former member of the Rudd American Legion and the Rudd AMVETS, and Rudd volunteer fireman for more than 20 years.

John’s family was very important to him and he was a devoted grandfather to his only grandchild, his “best friend.”

John is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Darrell and John Jr.; one daughter, Karen; and his granddaughter, Lisa Courter, all of Rudd.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard, in 1969; a son, David, in 1996; a daughter, Sharon, in 1997; his parents; two sisters; and a brother.

ELAINE G. WEAVER

BOONE — Elaine G. Weaver, 61, of Boone, died Monday (March 10, 2003) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames with the Rev. Mark Heilman, officiating. Private graveside services will be at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

There will be no visitation. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of arrangements.

Elaine Gladys Weaver, the daughter of Alfred William and Gladys (Meinders) Jurgemeyer, was born April 14, 1941, on a farm south of Garner. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1958 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

On Sept. 3, 1960, she was married to Egon Weaver at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. They had lived in Garner, Mason City, Watertown, S.D., and for 34 years in Boone.

Elaine worked at the Hancock County Extension Office in Garner, Carleton Stewart Music Company in Mason City, J.C. Peterson Clothiers in Boone, Whyte Tire Company in Boone and for 17 years at Iowa State University in Ames as an accountant.

She was also an organist at various churches, the last being First Baptist Church in Boone for 30 years.

She enjoyed her family, friends, music and traveling.

She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Egon, of Boone; son, Dr. Kent Weaver and wife, Dr. Angela Collins, of West Des Moines; daughter, Heather Nigro and husband, Mark, of Boone; three grandchildren, Autumn Weaver of Boone and Alyssa and Paul Weaver of West Des Moines; a brother, Vernon Jurgemeyer and wife, Diane, of St. James, Minn.; and two nieces, Raquel Linch and Karla Jurgemeyer.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alfred Jurgemeyer in 1978.

HAROLD ‘CURLY’ ELLEFSON

HAMPTON — Harold “Curly” Ellefson, 82, of Estabrook Lodge in Eldora and formerly of Hampton, died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hampton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, Alexander.

There will be no visitation. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

Harold was born July 19, 1920, in Alden, Iowa, to Frank Ellefson and Marie Anders. He was raised in Iowa Falls and graduated from Iowa Falls High School.

On Aug. 23, 1941 he was united in marriage to Anne Stoffer in Iowa Falls.

Harold worked for Maytag for 36 years as a supervisor of engineering.

He held many offices and performed many duties for the Hampton Lions Club. He had 38 years of service to the Lions and was valued for all the volunteer work he did for them. Some of his activities include 17 years of perfect attendence, six sponsored members, 10 years as chairman of Santa’s Helpers, three terms on the Board of Directors, two years on the Finance Committee, two years as chairman and co-chair of the annual Chicken BBQ dinner, two years on the public relations committee, 1991 Warren Coleman Award winner, 1992 appreciation award for Santa’s Helpers, five years on the calling committee, 1995 Melvin Jones Fellow Award, Coming to Your Senses Vision Screening Volunteer and past Lions’ Santa Claus.

Harold also made wood items for Operation Santa, Christmas Store, Camp Courageous of Iowa, Lions sponsored Summer Camp for Blind Children age 6-16 years and summer reading program, Hampton Lions Bingo door prizes, Hampton Fire Department State Convention in Hampton and also for the Iowa Welcome Center.

Harold was a 50-year member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for 12 years. He was a Scout Leader and in 1968 was the secretary for the Hampton Country Club. In 1969 he was the president of the Hampton Country Club, and a board member. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club, the secretary-treasurer of PTA and the president of the PTA in 1970s.

Harold is survived by two daughters, Carol and her husband, Ray Achterkirch, of Jackson Minn., and Carmen and her husband, Bill Lundie, of Moline, Ill.; a son, Tim and his wife, Peggee Ellefson, of Eldora; a sister, Hazel Richtsmeier, of Ackley; five grandchildren, Mary and her husband, Jeff Mikula, Stephanie Lundie, Bill Lundie, Cassie Ellefson, and Ben Ellefson; and great-grandson, Bradley Mikula.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anne.

DORIS I. CONIBEAR PITKIN

CLEAR LAKE — Doris I. Conibear Pitkin, 85, 1418 N. 23rd St., died Tuesday (March 11, 2003) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Mrs. Doris Pitkin Memorial Fund.

Doris was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Paynesville, Minn., the daughter of James Arthur and Elsie Elizabeth (Bokelman) Conibear. Her family moved to a farm near Clear Lake when she was six years old. Doris graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1936.

Doris married Norval Austin Pitkin on Aug. 20, 1936, in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived in Clear Lake until 1942 when they moved to Rudd to begin farming. They moved back to the Clear Lake area in 1945 to farm north of town. In 1995 they moved to their present home in Clear Lake.

Doris loved to bake, raise roses and gardening. She enjoyed embroidering, liked to stay busy and listen to country music. Norval and Doris enjoyed fishing together.

Doris was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Colonial Club and the D.D.D. Club.

Doris is survived by her three children, Judy Ytzen and her husband, Donald, of Clear Lake, Galen Pitkin and his wife, Cecelia, of Clear Lake and David Pitkin and his wife, Sandra, of Rochester, Minn.; nine grandchildren, DeAnn Robak and her husband, Jeff, of Plymouth, Debra Marson and her husband, David, of Mason City, Robert Ytzen and his wife, Deborah, of Clear Lake, Ron Pitkin and his wife, Pam, of Clear Lake, Dennis Pitkin and his wife, Jolene, of Clear Lake, Kevin Pitkin and his wife, Ruth, of Harlan, Ken Pitkin and his wife, Deanna, of Sterling, Ill., Dan Pitkin and his fiancée, Carleen Rudicill, of Parna Heights, Ohio, and Angela Pitkin and her husband, Rob Svetly, of Ely, Iowa; 15 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandson; one sister, Norma Grekoff, of Nora Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

ALGONA — A funeral Mass will be held for Alphons P. “Al” Erpelding, 87, of Algona, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Father Paul Eisele officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Algona with a military graveside service by Andrews American Legion Post No. 428 of Wesley and V.F.W. Post No. 2541 of Algona.

Alphons “Al” Peter Erpelding was born on Sept. 29, 1915, in Irvington Township, Algona, to John and Anna Krieps Erpelding. Al was educated at the Irvington Township School and St. Cecelia’s Academy.

He was a veteran of foreign wars, serving in the military from Jan. 2, 1941 until Oct. 15, 1945.

On June 27, 1945, Al was married to Vera Forburger, of Wesley, in Starke, Fla.

Al spent his life as a grain and hog farmer and entrepreneur. He built Hillside Golf Club with Bill Erpelding and Merle Loss, had a farming partnership with Bill Erpelding and Dale Kleingartner and a 25-year partnership with Roy Stoffel in Viking Oil Co. in Algona.

Al and Vera moved from their rural home to Algona in 1982.

Al was a member of the St. Cecelia’s Parish, the Algona V.F.W. Post No. 2541, Andrews American Legion Post No. 428, Wesley, Iowa, and served for eight years as chairman of Congressman Berkley Bedell’s Kossuth County Farm Advisory Committee.

Al’s first loves were his family and farming, but he also enjoyed playing cards, golfing, fishing and attending sales.

Al died on Tuesday (March 11, 2003) at the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona, where he had been a resident since June of 2000.

Al is survived by his wife, Vera, of Algona; children and spouses, Mary Ann and Paul Emerick, of Pella, Steven and Linda Erpelding, Gary and Paula Erpelding, and David and Cindy Erpelding, all of Algona; brother, Bill Erpelding, of Algona; his grandchildren, Jennifer Emerick Kuntz, Sara Emerick Roach, Jacob, Paul L. and Allison Emerick, John, Lucas and Mindy Erpelding, Gina, Anna and Maria Erpelding, Mollie, Michael and Mitchell Erpelding; stepgranddaughter, Jessica Froehlich Myers; and great-grandson, Taylor Erpelding.

CLEAR LAKE — Jerry G. Higgins, 67, of 1213 Main Ave., Clear Lake, died Friday (Dec. 20, 2002) at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

According to the family’s wishes, he was cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz, officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

Jerry was born Nov. 29, 1935, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Laverne and Margaret (Adams) Higgins and grew up in Smithland, Iowa. He moved to Des Moines his senior year and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954.

He joined the Air Force and served in Japan and stateside and was honorably discharged in 1959.

Jerry married Sylvia Rohde on June 6, 1959, in Des Moines. He worked at Frye Mfg. before moving to Clear Lake in 1967.

He started working for the Rock Island Railroad, then for the Chicago Northwestern. Due to the railroad’s merging and laying off, he then moved to Waseca, Minn., where he was an engineer for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad for several years. He retired in July 2000 and spent the winters in South Carolina and the summers in Ottumwa.

Jerry enjoyed casinos and stopped in each one as he traveled. He also enjoyed remodeling his homes and working in the yard, but working for the railroad was what he enjoyed most, next to his family.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Clear Lake; two sons, Jeff Higgins and his wife, Debbie, of Clear Lake, and Brad Higgins and his wife, June, of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Curtis Higgins, of Clear Lake, Kathy Higgins, of Anderson, S. C., Kim Higgins, of Crescent, and Alexander Higgins, of Ottumwa; two brothers, Duane Higgins and his wife, Kathy, of Corning, and Bill Higgins, of Arvada, Colo.; and several close nieces and nephews.

BOONE — Elaine G. Weaver, 61, of Boone, died Monday (March 10, 2003) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Elaine Gladys Weaver, the daughter of Alfred William and Gladys (Meinders) Jurgemeyer, was born April 14, 1941, on a farm south of Garner. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1958 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

On Sept. 3, 1960, she was married to Egon Weaver at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. They lived in Garner, Mason City, Watertown, S.D., and for 34 years in Boone.

Elaine worked at the Hancock County Extension Office in Garner, Carleton Stewart Music Company in Mason City, J.C. Peterson Clothiers in Boone, Whyte Tire Company in Boone and for 17 years at Iowa State University in Ames as an accountant.

She was also an organist at various churches, the last being First Baptist Church in Boone for 30 years. She enjoyed her family, friends, music and traveling.

She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Egon, of Boone; mother, Gladys Jurgemeyer, of Garner; son, Dr. Kent Weaver and his wife, Dr. Angela Collins, of West Des Moines; daughter, Heather Nigro and husband, Mark, of Boone; three grandchildren, Autumn Weaver of Boone and Alyssa and Paul Weaver, of West Des Moines; a brother, Vernon Jurgemeyer and wife, Diane, of St. James, Minn.; and two nieces, Raquel Linch and Karla Jurgemeyer.

Arlet Odina Gold was born on April 30, 1918, near Frost, Minn., the daughter of August and Hilda (Berge) Egeness. She graduated from high school in Blue Earth, Minn.

On Sept. 9, 1936, she married Arnold Helland. They lived and farmed in south central Minnesota and north central Iowa for many years.

As their children got older Arlet worked at the canning factory in Bricelyn, Minn., then Compact Industries and Deluxe Products in Lake Mills, Iowa. In 1967 she began working at Streaters in Albert Lea, Minn.

On July 23, 1973, Arlet married John Gordon Gold in Sioux Falls, S.D. They enjoyed visiting Arlet’s children and grandchildren, listening and dancing to big-band music with her brothers and sisters and friends.

Arlet retired from Streaters in 1980. During her last years she treasured visits from her family.

Arlet passed away Tuesday (March 11, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Gerald was born May 10, 1939, in Stacyville, the son of Benedict F. and Caroline (Weber) Adams. He attended and graduated from Visitation School in Stacyville. After graduation, he worked with his father in the family business, Adams Motor Co. in Stacyville, and took over ownership when his father retired in 1967.

Gerald closed the car dealership in the mid 1980s and he and his brother Melvin converted the space to a four-lane bowling alley called “Imperial Lanes.” Gerald ran that business from 1987 until he sold it in 1994.

Gerald then moved to Osage and worked at Cooper’s Osage Chrysler as a bookkeeper.

Gerald retired last year and has enjoyed his retirement with family and friends.

Gerald was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Austin Eagles Club. As an Eagles member, Gerald hosted many fundraising events in Stacyville as part of their annual Cancer Telethon. Gerald opened his home as a host to two foreign exchange students from Bulgaria. Mitko Mitev graduated from Osage High School and has returned to Bulgaria. Miroslav Jelev graduated from NIACC and is currently attending college in Pennsylvania. Because of Miros’s involvement in the boxing club of Rudd, Gerald became involved with the Hummel Boxing Club of Rudd.

Gerald also enjoyed going out to eat with friends, spending time with family and chatting on-line.

He is survived by one sister-in-law, Jennie Adams of Osage; five nieces, Pat (John) Fisher of Dale City, Va., Mar Adams of Osage, Colleen Upton of Garden Grove, Calif., Sue (Don) Weber of Stacyville, and Liz (Rick) Stevens of Osage; one nephew, Mike Adams of Osage, eight great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great-nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was born Jan. 18, 1904, near Osage, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Hovel) Popp. She contracted polio at the age of four and was unable to attend school. Her siblings home-schooled Elizabeth.

She made her home with John and Frances Popp until 1976, when she became a resident at the Faith Home. Family was important to her and her involvement with three generations of the John Popp family.

She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild. Prayer and the rosary were the foundations of her life. She enjoyed crocheting doilies and embroidery. Elizabeth enjoyed music, playing the harmonica and keyboard.

Elizabeth is survived by 20 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Orvin and John; four sisters, Mary Pelleymounter, Edith Meitner, Anna Meitner, and Rose Ginder; and nieces and nephews.

She was born July 15, 1916, in Chebanse, Ill. The family moved to Mason City in 1933. Juanita graduated from Mason City High School in 1935.

She married Edward E. Stephan in 1939.

Juanita was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and GGG Sorority, and was a Boy Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader.

Her children and grandchildren were the delights of her life, and being a part of their lives was precious.

A superb cook, Juanita was an expert seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crafts.

She married Larry Voight on Sept. 13, 1975, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. They lived on a farm near Osage.

Debra was employed for 22 years at the Osage Farmers National Bank as a teller.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild in Osage.

Debra loved gardening, quilting and attending school sporting events. She especially loved her family and friends.

Eunice Maxine Tabb Elwood, the daughter of Art and Ara (Whetsler) Tabb, was born July 19, 1926, at Corwith. She was raised and educated in Corwith, graduating from the Corwith High School in 1944.

After her graduation, she attended La James College of Hairstyling and Cosmetology in Mason City. Eunice was then employed in Belmond and Eagle Grove as a hair stylist.

On March 31, 1948, Eunice was united in marriage to Dallas Elwood. The marriage took place in the First Baptist Church in Corwith. After their marriage, the couple lived in Eagle Grove. They moved to Corwith in January of 1956.

Eunice assisted her husband in the Grocery and Meat Processing Plant. Eunice and Dallas retired from the business on April 1, 1983.

Eunice was a member of the Corwith United Methodist Church, the U.M.W. and was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she served as poppy chairman for several years.

Eunice passed away on Thursday morning, March 13, 2003, at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha, where she had been a resident for one year and seven months.

Eunice is survived by her husband, Dallas, of Corwith; two sons and their spouses, Scott and his wife, Vicky Elwood, and their two sons, Mike and Steven, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Tom and Ladine Elwood and their two daughters, Katie and Elizabeth Elwood, of Liberty, Mo., and several cousins.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Rodney, in 1950.

CHARLES CITY — Genevieve Cerwinske, 87, of 113 Stony Point Road, Charles City, died Friday (March 14, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
