LUTHER M. BUSS

MASON CITY — Luther M. Buss, 90, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dr. John ‘‘Jack’’ Gannett of the St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and one hour before services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be given to the Luther M. Buss Memorial Fund.

Luther was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Chapin, the son of Evert and Emma (Busch) Buss. He attended rural schools in the Chapin area and moved to Mason City in 1922 and graduated Mason City High School in 1932.

He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

He was married to Helen Mae Mott on Jan. 14, 1946, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City. She preceded him in death in February of 1967.

He was married to Dorothy (Spangler) Carlson on Feb. 25, 1969, in Goldfield, Iowa.

Luther worked for the Interstate Power Co. for 25 years as a meter repairer and tester. He also worked several years for the “very best” bakery in Clear Lake.

He was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he was head usher for 15 years.

He was also a member of the V.F.W., D.A.V., American Legion, AmVets, Harding Lodge #649 A.F. & A.M. and High Twelve.

He was a longtime member of the Senior Citizens Center. For 26 years he was involved with the Boy Scouts receiving the Silver Beaver and was a member of the Order of Arrow.

Survivors are his wife, Dorothy L. Buss, of Mason City; son, Timothy “Tim” Buss and wife, Diane, of Mason City; stepdaughters, Donna Jean Flumerfelt and husband, Don, of Eagle Grove and Emma Jean Carlson, of Olin; stepsons, Ole Carlson and wife, Janice, of Hampton, Minn. and Jerry Carlson, of Des Moines; grandsons, Nikolaus, Kristofer and Zachary Buss, all of Mason City; great-grandson, Preston Buss; stepgrandchildren, Denise Lenarz, Dan Flumerfelt, John Carlson and Courtney Carlson; stepgreat-granddaughter, Olivia Flumerfelt; brother, Ralph Buss and wife, Harriette, of Eugene, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews and many little neighborhood children whom he enjoyed.

He was preceded by his parents; first wife Helen; son in infancy; four brothers, Jack, Ernie, Lawrence and Everette; three sisters, Lois Lowe, Ethel St. Amand and Carrie Heitland; and one great-grandson, Zaine Nikolaus Buss.

LARRY LEE DEVRIES

SHEFFIELD — Funeral services for Larry Lee DeVries will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at West Fork United Methodist Church, 2200 Tulip Ave., Sheffield, with the Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen, officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield.

Larry Lee DeVries was born July 2, 1938, in Butler County a son of John J. and Grace Ida (Viet) DeVries. He attended Sheffield schools. He was engaged in farming with his father near Sheffield.

On Nov. 8, 1958, Larry was united in marriage with Patricia Kay Price.

Larry retired from full- time farming in 1983 and was semi-retired. He kept busy with his passion, raising registered Red-Angus Cattle and his International tractors. He worked as a farmhand for Jay and Leah Hamilton.

Larry loved being with his family and grandchildren, going to sales and taking Sunday afternoon drives around the section looking at deer and wildlife.

Larry died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at his farm in rural Hampton. He was 64 years old.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia, of Hampton; children, Donna (Bryan) Rowson, of Bristow; LeeAnn (Todd) Doty, of Clarksville; Ben (Brenda) DeVries, of Hampton; five grandchildren, Sarah and Shelby Rowson, Kayla and Brandon Doty and Reid DeVries; his mother, Grace DeVries, of Dumont; four sisters, Hilda Kriemeyer, Matilda Christenson and Carla (Dan) McVicker, all of Bevier, Mo.; and Marion (Donovan) Worley, of Aredale; a brother, Ken (Bonnie) DeVries, of Hampton.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, John J. DeVries; and son, Donny Lee DeVries.

CLEO C. FRENCH

MASON CITY — Cleo C. French, 77, of Mason City died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Lois Abel, of the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation for Cleo will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established in Cleo’s name.

Cleo was born Nov. 15, 1925, the daughter of Leo and Clara (Hachmeister) Watrous in Orange Township, Iowa. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1943.

On July 14, 1951, Cleo was united in marriage to William M. French at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City and they spent many wonderful years together until William’s death on Feb. 24, 1972.

Cleo was a partial owner of Buffalo Lanes in Buffalo Center until she sold the business and retired in 1986.

Following her retirement, Cleo returned to Mason City where she worked for the Family Bowl in Mason City for more than 15 years. She enjoyed the time she spent at the bowling alley being able to cook and visit with so many people.

Cleo was dearly loved by so many people and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son, William E. French and wife, Denise, of Buffalo Center; a daughter, Kathy Rasmussen and husband, Robin, of Grafton; four grandchildren, Sgt. Wm. ‘‘Chip’’ French, of Fort Wainwright, Alaska, Michael J. Belton, of South Carolina, and Robby and Billy Jo Rasmussen, of Grafton; two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Neva) Wood, of West Des Moines, and Mrs. Harold (Verna) Pomeroy of Coon Rapids; sisters-in-law, Ora “Bob” Watrous of Coon Rapids, and Evelyn Peterson, of Colorado.

Cleo was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; and one brother, Lyle Waterous.

LAVERNA R. HANSEN

FLOYD — LaVerna R. Hansen, 89, of Indianpolis, Ind., and formerly of Floyd, Iowa died Monday (March 24, 2003) at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

HAZEL AMANDA HINMAN

BELMOND — Hazel Amanda Hinman, 87, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond, died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Belmond United Church of Christ Congregational, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith, officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond and continue one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Belmond United Church of Christ Congrational or to the donor’s choice.

Hazel Tegland was born Oct. 23, 1915, on her parents’ farm in rural Wright County, Clarion, the daughter of Otto and Rachel (Hefte) Tegland.

She attended rural Wright County Schools and following her graduation from eighth grade she moved into Clarion.

She worked as a domestic housekeeper and resided with the families she worked for while attending high school.

Following her graduation from high school, Hazel worked for a time in Clarion and Eagle Grove before moving to Ogden, Utah. While making her home in Ogden, she was employed as a secretary with Arden Dairy.

Hazel later returned to Iowa and was united in marriage to Stephen Neal Hinman on June 17, 1945, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church rural Belmond.

The couple then made their home and farmed west of Belmond until their retirement from farming in 1977.

Following retirement the couple continued to make their home on the farm. In addition to farming with her husband, Hazel was a lifelong homemaker, wife, and mother. Her energy and devotion was always directed to her husband, four sons, and the hired farmhands that the family often housed and employed.

Hazel and her husband Stephen were very active throughout their lives. They were very involved in the church life serving as secretary and treasurer for several terms.

They sang in the church choir and Hazel was active in the Women’s Church Fellowship, and had also contniued her membership at her former St. Olaf Lutheran Church in the Ladies Aide.

She belonged to the Kensington Club and was a longtime member of a Neighborhood Ladies Birthday Club.

Hazel and her husband had enjoyed playing cards in a pinochle club and looked forward to their daily games of cribbage.

The couple enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada. Their adventures began in earlier years in a renovated school bus camper and later years they traveled in a motorhome.

Hazel enjoyed fishing trips with her husband and family. She cherished family gatherings and will be missed by many for her wonderful cooking skills and specialities such as kringla, lefse, and various other Norwegian treats.

Her family will remember her for being meticulous in all that she did, whether, she was doing housework or creating a fantastic needlework or crocheted afghan for them to receive as gifts.

Throughout her life, Hazel was an avid Minnesota Twins and Iowa State Cyclones fan. She had been to many games in earlier years and contniued to follow her favorite teams on television in later years.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband on March 11, 2000. She continued to live on the farm untilmoving to the care center on Sept. 24, 2002.

While at the care center she enjoyed many of the residents and activities and especially looked forward to playing bingo.

Those left to cherish the legacy of her life include her four sons, Stephen A. Hinman and wife, Sharion, of Belmond, Donald Hinman, of New York, N.Y., Wayne Hinman, of Belmond, and his friend, Clara Fokkena, of Clarksville, and David Hinman, of Vacaville, Calif.; sister, Ilene and husband, Robert Kalkwarf, of Belmond; a brother, Joe Tegland and wife, Frances, of Belmond; and five grandchildren, Chad Hinman, of Ames, Anthony Hinman, of Cedar Rapids, Maryann Hinman, of Independence, Neal Hinman and wife, Jessica, of Stanhope, Michele Miltenberger and husband, Jason, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Oren, Elmer, Leslie, and Paul; and two sisters, Caroline Anderson and Olive Ruth Cook.

RUBY R. MATSON

CLEAR LAKE — Ruby R. Matson, 94, passed away Sunday (March 23, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Ruby R. Matson Memorial Fund.

Ruby Rose Shook was born on Jan. 18, 1909, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Hiram and Linnie (Harding) Shook.

She was united in marriage to Ferd S. Matson on Nov. 18, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed north of Clear Lake their entire married life.

She was a member of the Colonial Club.

She enjoyed nature and being with her family.

She continued to reside at the farm home until December 2002 when she entered the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Ruby is survived by children, Jon and wife, Linda, of Clear Lake, and Arvid and wife, Dixie, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Shelly Benton and her husband, Doug, Tammy Wageman, Mindy Zaruba and her husband, Tim, Becky Gray and her husband, Jacob, and Marcy Bitner and her husband, David; 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elsie Armfield and her husband, Russ, of Clear Lake and Dorothy Newburg, of Mason City, Mildred Matson, of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Ferd, in 1992; her parents; sister, Vira; brothers, Roy and Robert.

RONALD D. EWING

ROCKWELL — Ronald D. “Ron” Ewing, 42, of Swaledale, died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Galilean Lutheran Church, 4454 255th St., Highway 18 West, Clear Lake. The Rev. Jeff Ungs will officiate. Inurnment will be at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mount Vernon Township, rural Cerro Gordo County.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the family.

“Spike,” as he was fondly known by his family and friends, was born June 3, 1960, in Mason City, to Sam and LaVonna (Grouette) Ewing. He graduated in the class of 1978 from Mason City High School, where he was active in football, wrestling and track.

Ron furthered his education in Ames at Iowa State University, where he played football and earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety engineering.

“Spike” was currently employed at Wood Harbor.

Before that, “Spike’s” most recent employment was as director of events, promoting concerts, sporting events and other venues. He traveled all over the U.S., most recently in Sioux Falls, S.D. , and Minneapolis, Minn.

Ron will best remembered for being a dedicated and devoted family man. He had a real passion and joy for people. He had a wide variety of interests and leisure activities, which included golf, dancing, running, biking, finish carpentry work, cooking all kinds of different foods, which he enjoyed so much that he and his wife, Sonya, would argue in fun, that he was “taking over her kitchen.”

Last summer, Ron, took part in coaching his son Joshua’s “little league” baseball team. “Spike” also collected a vast assortment of shoes and wallets.

On June 1, 2002, Ron was united in marriage to Sonya, the couple honeymooned in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they had a fabulous time.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing his life are his wife, Sonya; five children, Trenton and Tahlia Ewing of St. Paul, Minn., and Joshua, Chrystin and Breckie Clark, all at home; his mother, LaVonna Ewing of Mason City; his sisters and brothers, Linda Martin and her husband, Robert, of Klemme, Delores Seidel of Hampton, Michael Pettey of Rockford, John Pettey of Mason City, Leona Righette and her husband, Lloyd, of Clear Lake, Sam “Sonny” and Jerry Ewing of Nebraska; father and mother-in-law, Larry and Nina Petersen of Swaledale; brother-in-law, Robert Petersen and his wife, Sue, of Rockwell; and sister-in-law, Laurie Hanson and her husband, Todd, of Cedar Falls. Many relatives and friends will also miss him.

Preceding Ron in death were his father, Sam, in 1989, and his grandparents.

HENRY H. FURST

ALGONA — Henry H. Hurst, 98, died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at Good Samaritan Center, Algona.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Algona. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona.

Henry Harold Furst was born Aug. 9, 1904, in Lakota, son of Albertus and Anna (Conradi) Furst. He attended country school at Lincoln Township.

Hank moved to Algona in 1926. He was united in marriage to Florence V. Taylor on Jan. 7, 1927, at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He and Florence owned and operated Hank’s Dairy Crème for 17 years and he also operated Hank’s Barber Shop until retiring in 1979.

Hank and Florence enjoyed wintering in Florida, Texas, and Arizona.

He was a charter member of the Algona Lions Club, a member of the Master Barber Association, and a member of the Algona First Presbyterian Church.

Henry H. Furst died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Healthcare Center, Algona, at the age of 98. He has been a resident there for the past three years.

He is survived by two daughters-in-law, Fern Furst of Humboldt, and Lois Harrison, Davenport, Fla.; six grandchildren, Janet Smith and her husband Jim Jr., of Britt, JoAnne Pestel and her husband, Dane, of Westerville, Ohio, Julie Wuertz and her husband, Tom, of Hilliard, Ohio, Scott Furst and his wife, Trish, of New Albany, Ohio, DeAnna Luciow and her husband, Jim, of Romulus, Mich., and Denise Schroeder and her husband, Korey, of Clarion; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Florence on April 28, 1988; two sons, Eugene and Richard; and eight brothers and sisters, Hattie Jurgens, Johanna Gortmaker, Bertha Mathahs, Anna Telkamp, Alvina Bruns, and Martin, Herbert and John Furst.

BELMOND — Frederick “Fred” J. Rockow, 86, of rural Belmond, died on Sunday (March 23, 2003) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Vernon Lutheran Church in rural Dows, with the Rev. Paul Thompson, officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Dows Community Funeral Home, 100 N. Lee St. in Dows and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

GREENE — Eugene Robert Viers, 93, of 4071/2 Courtland St., died Monday (March 24, 2003) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services Thursday.
