JUNE NIEMAN

KANAWHA - June Nieman, 82, of Kanawha, died Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to the service at the church.

HAZEL ANDERSON

DOWS - Hazel Anderson, 92, of Dows, died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Memorial services for Hazel Anderson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Dows with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Friends may call on the family one hour prior to services at the church. There will be no viewing as the body has been cremated.

Hazel, the daughter of Martin and Rena Battin Ellenberger, was born February 14, 1910, near Bloomfield, Iowa. She grew up in the Bloomfield area, where she attended school. Hazel graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1926. She then attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Des Moines.

Hazel was united in marriage to V.O. "Andy" Anderson on February 26, 1930, in Princeton, Mo. To this marriage was born a daughter, Kay. The couple made their home in Davenport, where they were the district managers for the Des Moines Register. The couple returned to a farm near Dows in 1936. They helped operate the family hardware store, Anderson Supply, in Dows. After the death of Andy's father, Andy and Hazel continued to operate the store. They eventually expanded, with the opening of Anderson Service in Webster City. After the death of Andy in 1972, Hazel continued to run the stores, retiring when she sold the businesses. Hazel lived in the Dows Care Center and was currently a resident at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility.

Hazel and Andy loved to travel and traveled extensively throughout the world. The couple was involved in an international antique car collector's club. Hazel enjoyed running her business as her hobby, but she also enjoyed reading. She was a member of the Liberty Club, Eastern Star, Morgan Study Club and the Presbyterian Church in Dows.

Hazel is survived by a brother, Carl Ellenberger and wife, Kathrine, of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, Hector Anderson and his wife, Ruby, of Dows; eight nieces and nephews, Betty Rupe and husband, Dwayne, of Valentine, Neb., Victor Carl Blecharczyk and wife, Kathryn, of Marysville, Kan., Harriett Ellenberger of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Jim Ellenberger and wife, Marcia, of Perry, Robert Anderson of Ames, Roger Anderson and wife, Mary, of Prior Lake, Minn., Frank Vitale of Sharon, Wis., and Linda Vitale of Geneva, Fla.; many great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of friends.

Hazel is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; daughter, Kay, and sister, Florence.

MASON CITY - Marilyn H. Boender, 68, of 630 Briarstone Drive, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

DOWS - Henry J. "Hank" Iverson, 90, of Dows, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at Hampton Care Center in Hampton.

His funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery in Alden at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Dows Community Funeral Home at 100 N. Lee St. in Dows and one hour prior to the service at the church.

OPAL G. OLSEN

THOMPSON - Opal Olsen, age 90, formerly of Thompson, residing in Lake Mills, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Memorial service will be Monday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Thompson with Rev. Wendy Trone officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Linden Lutheran Cemetery in rural Thompson.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Opal Geraldine Olsen was born in Huxley, Iowa, on January 22, 1913, the daughter of Edward and Cora (Sharp) Lande. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and grew up in the Rake-Bricelyn-Thompson area. She received her education in rural schools near her home.

On March 28, 1936, she was married to Engel Olsen in Estherville. The couple made their home on a farm south of Thompson for many years. There, Opal raised her family and worked with her husband on the farm. She tended garden and canned vegetables. A talented seamstress, Opal loved to sew and quilt, recruiting her boys to help when necessary tying quilts. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting as well, and her family remembers what a wonderful cook she was.

Opal entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1994. She died there on Friday, January 24, 2003, at the age of 90 years.

She is survived by her children; Vernon Olsen and wife, Karen, of Flower Mound, Texas, Gary Olsen and wife, Kay, of Thompson, Merle Olsen and wife, Ethel, of Hutchinson, Minn., Sheryl Olsen of Lake Mills, and Terry Olsen and wife, Kathy, of Forest City. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Engel, in 1999; a son, Erlyn Olsen; a daughter, Opal Anne Olson; a granddaughter, Shawn Olsen, and two brothers.

NORMAN S. RYE

FERTILE - Norman S. Rye, age 84, of Fertile, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with the Rev. Marlin Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Norman Sydney Rye was born on Sept. 21, 1918, to Lewis and Caroline (Jacobson) Rye in Fertile. He grew up and received his education in Fertile. He was in the service of his country for four years with the Army Engineers, spending time in Hawaii, Okinawa and Saipan during World War II.

On Oct. 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to Maxine Fredrickson of Forest City. Norman worked at Winnebago Industries, hauled star route mail for 13 years, worked in maintenance at Oakwood Manor in Clear Lake and was groundskeeper for 14 years at All Vets Golf Course in Clear Lake.

Norman was an active member of Fertile Lutheran Church, serving as a deacon, teaching Sunday school and working on remodeling the church basement. He made the communion railing and a cross for each Sunday school room. He also served on the Fertile City Council and as a member of the Brush Point Cemetery Board.

Norman passed away at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the age of 84 years.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine Rye of Fertile; a daughter, Julie Abendschein and husband, Robert, of Hampton; sons, James and wife, Susan, of Des Moines, and David and wife, Valerie, of Golden, Colo. Also, four grandchildren; Lisa Wicks and husband, LeRoy, of Clarion, David Abendschein of Ames and Matthew Abendschein of Hampton, and Katie Rye of Golden, Colo.; and two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Margaret Wicks; many nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

VIVIAN M. EVANS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vivian M. Evans, 92, of Kansas City, Mo., and formerly of the Mason City and Clear Lake (Iowa) area, passed away peacefully at home on Friday (Jan. 24, 2003).

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 4301 N.E. Vivion Road. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel, 6600 N. Antioch Road.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Evans was born on Dec. 1, 1910, in Red Wing, Minn. Following her education, she moved to Mason City, where she met and married Willard E. Nelson. They owned and operated the general store in Burchinal. Mr. Nelson died suddenly in 1946, leaving her with two young daughters. She later married Russell C. Evans of Burchinal.

Mrs. Evans was the postmaster in Burchinal from 1947 until 1953. Later, she and her husband farmed south of Clear Lake until 1975, when they moved to Kansas City, Mo.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Brauer and husband, Bill, of Granada Hills, Calif., and Sue Krall and husband, John, of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Doris Larson of Bloomington, Minn.; granddaughters, Amy Todd of Kansas City, Mo., and Jennifer Brauer of Granada Hills, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

CECELIA LOUISE ROBERTSON

ROGERS, Ark. - Cecelia Louise Robertson, 73, of Rogers, Ark., and formerly of the Mason City-Clear Lake area, died Tuesday (Jan. 21, 2003) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at a future date with burial in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

MASON CITY - Martha E. Butler, 95, of 302 2nd St. N.E., died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

FORREST ALLAN BISBEY

BOONE - Forrest Allan Bisbey, 55,of Boone and formerly of Clarion, died Wednesday (Jan. 22, 2003) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

GLENN EDWARD TILTON

MASON CITY - Glenn Edward Tilton, 49, passed away Thursday evening (Jan. 23, 2003) at the home of his parents, Warren and Charlotte (Jones) Tilton, 123 5th St. N.W., from lung cancer.

A memorial service will be held later this summer. According to his wishes, Mr. Tilton's body has been cremated.

Memorials may be directed to the Glenn E. Tilton Memorial Fund, 123 5th St. N.W., Mason City.

Glenn was born June 8, 1953, in Mason City and attended Mason City Public Schools. He was a member of DeMolay, Boy Scouts and the Mason City High School Class of 1972. Glenn traveled after school for a short time before enlisting in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., Fort Polk, La., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and in Germany. After his discharge, he attended North Iowa Area Community College.

Glenn was a welder and a member of the Local Iron Workers Union 512. He also worked for a time at Clear Lake Water Tower before making his home in the Twin Cities area. Glenn was a lover of history, wrote poetry and was an accomplished artist. Several of his paintings, drawings and art pieces are now in the possession of his family. Glenn had a wonderful sense of humor, right up until the time of his death.

Glenn is survived by his parents, Warren and Charlotte Tilton of Mason City; his daughter, Tammi Barnes; two sisters, Mona Grupp and her husband, Eric, of Severna Park, Md., and Robin Tilton and her husband, Bruce Lane, of Mason City; one nephew, Nate Grupp; three nieces, Charlotte and Victoria Grupp and Jasmine Lane, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ruth and Arnold Tilton, and his maternal grandparents, Glen and Flora Jones,

JEAN ADEINAH JEFFORDS LAYFIELD

MASON CITY- Jean Adeinah Jeffords Layfield, 81, of 1037 19th St. N.E., Mason City, and Naples, Fla., died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) at the IOOF Home, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Jean was born March 4, 1921, in Fort Eustis, Va., the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Eugene Jeffords. She was a 1939 graduate of Joliet Township High School, Joliet, Ill., and a 1943 graduate of New Jersey College for Women, Rutgers University.

She married Robert M. Layfield on April 14, 1945, at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, S.D. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary prior to his death in 1997.

Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, P.E.O. Chapter DZ and History Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Busch, of Mason City; a son, Robert Layfield and wife, Missy, of Cedar Falls; five grandsons, Charles and Michael Busch of Denver, Colo., Christopher Layfield of Cedar Falls, Matthew Layfield of St. Louis, Mo., and Joel Layfield of Evanston, Ill., and a sister, Barbara Lipham of Atlanta, Ga.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; brothers, Cullen R. Jeffords and James Stewart Jeffords, and her parents, Eugene and Ruth Jeffords.

L. MARIE PATTISON

GARNER - L. Marie Pattison, 93, of Garner, died Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Interment will be in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Marie Pattison, the daughter of John Christian and Viola Beatrice (Robbins) Goll, was born Nov. 17, 1909, on the family farm south of Garner. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace Reformed Church near Garner. Marie attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1928. After high school, she taught in the rural schools of Hancock County. In the early 1940s, she moved to California and was employed at Reynolds Industries in Santa Monica.

On Nov. 12, 1957, she was married to Milton K. Pattison at Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Pacific Palisades, Calif., where she was a homemaker. On July 28, 1981, Milton passed away.

In 1982, Marie returned to Garner to be closer to her family. In January of 2001, she moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. She enjoyed reading and playing cards.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, Zion Women's Fellowship and the adult Bible study.

Marie is survived by her three sisters, Ruby Stromer of Garner, Lola Goll of Garner and Mildred Bredlow of Garner; nephews and nieces, Delwyn Stomer and his wife, Harriet, of Des Moines, Vivian Bovenmyer and her husband, Dwight, of Garner, Marian DeWitt and her husband, Allan, of Garner, and Denis Bredlow and his wife, Barb, of Skidmore, Mo; and a niece-in-law, Thelma Stromer and her husband, Bob Gates, of Lake Tahoe, Nv.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; her parents; a nephew, Norman Stromer, and two brothers-in-law, Aaron Stromer and Leroy Bredlow.

MASON CITY- Marilyn H. Boender, 68, of 630 Briarstone Drive, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center after a long struggle with amyloidosis.

Funeral services will celebrate her life at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W., with Rev. Jack Vanden Heuvel officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Marilyn was born June 29, 1934, in Delta, Iowa, the daughter of Guy and Cornelia (Valster) Kelderman and was married to Edward Boender April 25, 1952, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

After some time in the U.S. Air Force, they moved to Mason City in 1960 when Ed was employed at Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan and Marilyn worked as a telephone operator. They were blessed with four children and she was a domestic engineer for many years, always supportive in all their activities and very involved in the founding and work of the Christian Reformed Church. Music was very special in her life, especially when used to praise God. She was active in Women's Club, PEO chapter KW and Occident Club. She and Ed enjoyed some travels together and particularly excursions in their motor home. In recent years, she was employed at Comprehensive Systems, always the caregiver. She will always be remembered for her enduring faith and strong but tender spirit.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ed; brother, Gerald Kelderman and wife, Kathryn, of Lafayette, Colo.; children; Pat Guetzko and husband, Dave, of Mason City and their children, Lisa, Matthew and Mark, Mike Boender and wife, Donna, of Lakewood, Colo., and their children, Nicholas and Zachary, John Boender of Golden, Colo., Carol Boender, of Washington, D.C.; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and very special niece, Joan Fynaardt of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred, and her parents.

Martha was born March 4, 1907, in Mason City the daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Buehler. Martha graduated from Mason City High School in 1924, then attended Hamilton Business College. She went on to work for the Crane Company then Buehler and Bishop Grocery Store. In 1963, Martha went to work for the Cerro Gordo County assessor retiring in 1973.

She married O.G. "Cotton" Butler June 10, 1945, in Mason City.

Martha was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, charter member of Pilot Club, Garden Club, Mason City Women's Club and enjoyed traveling, golfing and bridge.

Martha is survived by a niece; Elizabeth Hanson and husband, Richard, of Minneapolis, Minn.; nephews, Wally Bishop and wife, Carol, of Palisade, Minn., David Bishop and wife, Mary, of Victoria, Minn.; many loving great nieces and nephews; special friend, Berniece Lunde of Mason City.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, O.G. "Cotton" Butler; two sisters, Lydia Bishop and Louise Kahle; infant brother and sister.

JUNE E. NIEMAN

KANAWHA- June E. Nieman, 82, of Kanawha, passed away Saturday (January 25, 2003) at Westview Care Center in Britt, where she had been a resident since April of 2000.

Funeral services for June Nieman will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Chuck Walton officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Friends may greet the family today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ewing Dugger Funeral Home at 118 East 2nd St. in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

June, the daughter of John and Cora Roushia Blank, was born on June 27, 1920, in Britt. She received her education in Amsterdam country school.

On January 2, 1940, June was united in marriage with John H. Nieman at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church parsonage. The couple made their home and farmed in the Kanawha area. June loved to help John in the farming operation. John and June retired from farming in 1980 and the couple moved into Kanawha in 1987.

June was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church where she enjoyed attending Ladies Aid. She also spent many enjoyable hours baking cookies, crocheting doilies, afghans, baby sweater sets and baby afghans many of which she gave to her nieces and nephews.

June is survived by two brothers; Paul Blank and his wife, Louise, of Nashville, Ark., J. E. "Cap" Blank and his wife, Nadine, of Tonto Basin, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Margaret Uthe and her husband, Joe, of Boone; brother-in-law, Martin Nieman and his wife, Joyce, of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; one sister, Dorothy Nieman; and four brothers, Irvin "Bodie", Alvin "Joe", Cecil, and one in infancy.

DOROTHY L. SIGLER BARTELT

MASON CITY- Dorothy L. Sigler Bartelt, 91, of 1027 Third St. N.E., died Saturday (January 25, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Dorothy was born December 17, 1911, in New Sharon, Iowa, a daughter of Guy and Bertha (Mullen) Jenkins. She lived and attended school in the Rudd area until her marriage to Martin B. Sigler on March 1, 1930, in Charles City. They lived in the Rudd area, where Dorothy was a homemaker, until Martin's death in 1957. After his death, Dorothy worked as a nurse's aid in Nora Springs for several years.

In 1961, she was united in marriage to Paul E. Bartelt. They lived in Mason City, where Dorothy also worked as a nurse's aid at several different care centers.

Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidery, reading the newspaper comics, and watching her favorite soap operas on TV.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Maxine Parker of Charles City and Martin D. Sigler and his wife, Beverly, of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son-in-law, Nick Kantaris of Mason City, and 13 grandchildren, Starla, Dana, Jerry, Brent, Michelle, and Glade Parker, Tami Cleghorn, Tim, Lonnie, and Natasha Sigler, Michael Kantaris, Nancy Linderman, and Angela Kantaris. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, Brock, Brandan, Alohna, Heather, Haley, Lindsay, Larissa, Casey, Ryan, Benjamin, Tyler, Trenton, Renae, Casondra, Levi, Dallas, Brad, Stephanie, Steven, and Vanessa, and two great-great-grandchildren, Skyler and Trevor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; an infant daughter, Beulah Mae; a son, Larry Sigler; a daughter, Connie Kantaris; a son-in-law, Gerald Parker; three sisters, Viola Sigler, Vera Hansen, and Mildred Welshans; and two granddaughters, Sheila and ZoAnne Parker.

WEBSTER CITY - Ronald R. Peters, 77, of Webster City, died Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at the Hamilton Hospital following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Kem officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the church and prior to services on Thursday.

Ronald Roy Peters, son of Otto and Anna Jacobsen Peters, was born Nov. 11, 1925 at Avoca, Iowa. He graduated from Avoca High School.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Infantry in Korea.

On June 25, 1950, he married Joan Anderson at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Williams. The couple resided at Avoca where he worked with his brother at the Avoca Dairy.

The family moved to Webster City in 1954 and he was employed at Morton Frozen Foods at Webster City, Paul Electric at Fort Dodge and Frigidaire (Electrolux) at Webster City. He retired in 1995.

Mr. Peters is survived by his wife, Joan; sons and daughter-in-law, David Peters, of Mason City, Ronald and Diane Peters, of Des Moines; daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie and Steve Vande Zande, of Webster City; grandchildren, Andrew and Allison Peters, Jennifer and Ryan Vande Zande; brothers, Allen Peters, of Sandy, Utah; Vernus, Lyle and Clyde Peters, all of Avoca; Jack Peters of Council Bluffs; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy Peters in 1976; sister, LeEtta Nielsen; brother, Arnold Peters.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a church board trustee for many years and was head usher for many years.

Ruth was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Mason City, the oldest child of Ashley Earl Ferrier and Pearl L. Nelson Ferrier. She lived near Mason City for many years and near Rockford for about 20 years. She attended rural schools and graduated from Mason City High School.

She graduated from a two-year nursing program and practiced nursing at the IOOF Home in Mason City. Ruth was also engaged in farming.

She enjoyed traveling experiencing cruises and traveled with her sister, Helen, to Europe and Hawaii. She also enjoyed dining out and dancing. In her early years she enjoyed riding horseback, owning her own horses.

The past year and one-half she enjoyed living at Homestead Assisted Living here in Mason City. She said the nurses and aides were the best.

She enjoyed reading, especially the library books Helen took to her. Ruth liked to see flowers grow and bloom. She had many African Violets and foliage plants when she and her husband, Elvin, lived on North California. At Homestead, she had many colorful artificial bouquets.

For many years she collected fine glassware, plates, dolls and Santas. She loved to shop. In later years she would shop my mail, with as many as six catalogs coming in one day's mail.

Ruth was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a circle member for many years. She was also a member of the Queen Rebekah Lodge, Farm Bureau and neighborhood clubs.

Ruth is survived by a sister, Helen Ristau and husband, Walter, of Mason City; nieces, Sharon Novak, Debra Hagen, Arlene Willsher, Kathleen Fielder, Bonnie Bradbury, and Scarlett Aucker; nephew, Donald Ferrier; cousins, Evelyn Nelson and LeNore Forbes; great-niece, Kelly McDonald; great-nephews, Timothy McMeen and Ryan Hagen; great-great-nephew, Dylan McDonald; special friend, Raymond Barnes of Britt.

Alice was born March 7, 1927, the daughter of Roy and Florence (Kilby) Linderman in Cresco. Alice was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her 11 children. In the summer of 1985, Alice was united in marriage to Richard Paulsen.

Alice was an outspoken, feisty gal who could make people laugh without trying. Alice had a passion for shopping and going to rummage sales. She also looked forward to taking leisurely car rides for relaxation and enjoyment.

Alice loved to make an event out of a family reunion. She went to great lengths making sure every detail was covered. Alice kept her family close to heart and at the top of her list; she never missed sending a birthday card or simple greeting.

Alice looked forward to attending her families' different activities and achievements. Alice never missed a Sunday evening of racing as she watched her sons compete for the checkered flag. Alice especially enjoyed her companionship with her dog, Toby.

Those thankful for having shared in her life include her husband, Richard; children, Linda Hall of Waterloo, Sandy Phillips and her husband, Dave, of Reedsburg, Wis., James "Beannie" Germundson, of Mason City, Ricky L. Ronald "Shorty" Long was born Nov. 26, 1917 on the family farm north of Thornton, the second son of Lorenzo and Anna B. (Schultz) Long. He attended rural schools and graduated from Thornton High School in 1935.

On July 2, 1939, Shorty was united in marriage with EvaMae Harmon at the parsonage of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. They made their home in the Thornton area and then farmed on their own southeast of Thornton.

In 1970, they moved into Thornton where he worked as the town maintenance man for 14 years. He also worked as a greens keeper at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Thornton. In addition he worked as the township clerk, caretaker of the Pleasant View Cemetery and manager of the car wash and the apartments in town.

Shorty was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thornton.

He loved people and was always ready to help someone if they needed help.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, EvaMae; two daughters, Sharon (Bruce) Evans and Lois Evans. He has two grandchildren, Lance (Jana) Evans and Carisa Evans. He also has two great-grandchildren, Steffanie and Allyson Evans. He is also survived by a host of friends and many nieces and nephews; his brothers, Howard (Cecil) Long and Stanley Long; and sister, Mildred Renner; and a couple little golfing buddies who are going to miss him. He loved kids and they in turn liked him. He will be missed and not just by his family.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vivian M. Evans, 92, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away on Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) peacefully at home.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. today at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 4301 N.E. Vivion Road.

Visitation was held on Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel, 6600 N. Antioch Rd. in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Evans was born on Dec. 1, 1910 in Red Wing, Minn. Following her education, she moved to Mason City, where she met and married Willard E. Nelson. They owned and operated the general store in Burchinal. Mr. Nelson died suddenly in 1946 leaving her with two young daughters.

She later married Russell C. Evans of Burchinal. Mrs. Evans was the postmaster in Burchinal from 1947 until 1953. Later, she and her husband farmed south of Clear Lake, until 1975 when they moved to Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; and brother, Raymond Ellingson.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Brauer and husband, Bill, of Granada Hills, Calif., and Sue Krall and husband, John, of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Doris Larson, of Bloomington, Minn.; grandaughters, Amy Todd, of Kansas City, Mo. and Jennifer Brauer, of Granada Hills, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William August Cross was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Floyd County, the son of Robert and Laura (Strus) Cross. He received his education from the Floyd High School.

On Feb. 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lois Clapp at Austin, Minn. William served in the United States Army during World War II. William and Lois are longtime residents of Charles City, but did live a number of years in California.

During his working career William was employed at the Oliver Corporation, but spent most of his time working as an auto mechanic, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Trailblazers, which was the unit that he served with in the Rhineland Campaign, and a former member of the I.A.M. Local 1596.

Talking about cars, woodworking, gardening, and doing yardwork were some of William's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include his wife, Lois, of Charles City; four sons, Danny (Colleen) Cross of Grand Terrace, Calif., Jerry (Dawn) Cross, of Shasta Lake, Calif., Craig Cross of Cotati, Calif., and Robert (Mae) Cross of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Marcella (Harold) Carlson, of Rockford; and two brothers, Roland Cross, of Charles City, and Larry (Sharon) Cross of Nora Springs.

BRITT - Helen Elizabeth Casper, 89, of Cabool, Mo., formerly of Britt, passed away Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003) at the Kabul Nursing Home, in Cabool, Mo.

Helen, the daughter of Ernest and Florence Farr Sanford, was born July 25, 1913, in Wheeler County, Neb., near Pibel Lake, Neb. At an early age, Helen moved with her family to Belgrade, Neb. where she graduated from Belgrade High School in 1930.

On Feb. 25, 1933, Helen was united in marriage with Louis Casper. The couple made their home on a farm north of Belgrade until 1957, when the family moved to a farm near Britt. In 1973, the couple moved into town. Louis passed away in 1995. In 1996, she moved to Cabool, Mo.

Following a stroke in February of 1999, Helen moved to Nokomis, Fla. where she lived with her daughter, Margaret Dewey. In August of 2002 she became a resident of Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Mo.

Helen cherished her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, they were her pride and joy. She enjoyed playing piano, singing, spending time in her garden, reading, and doing word games.

Mrs. Casper is survived by six children, Connie Mattox of Huntsville, Ala., George Casper and his wife, Judy, of Cabool, Mo., Mary Doughty and her husband, Bill, of Cedar Rapids, Neb., Paul Casper and his wife, Maruta, of Mountain Grove, Mo., Linda Thompson and her husband, Lynn, of Estherville, Iowa; and Margaret Dewey and her husband, Chuck, of Nokomis, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Reeves, of Blue Earth, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Violet Johnson, of Oakland, Neb. and Joy Sanford of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother-in-law, Walter Lundeen, of Oakland, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

FOREST CITY - Violet L. Otis, 85, formerly of Forest City, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) at District One Hospital in Faribault, Minn.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City with the Rev. Jerry Blake officiating.

Violet Leona Otis was born on a farm in Ellington Township, Hancock County, Iowa, on Feb. 19, 1917, the daughter of James and Lula (Streeper) Tompkins. She received her education in rural schools and in 1936 graduated from Garner High School.

On Dec. 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Bernard Orcutt. The couple made their home on his family farm near Fertile. After Mr. Orcutt's death in 1955, Violet and her family moved to Clear Lake. There she worked as a dental assistant for several years.

She married Merle Otis on June 17, 1963. After living in Clear Lake for a brief time they made their home on Merle's farm northwest of Forest City. Merle passed away in 1992 and since then Violet has made her home with her daughter in Madison Lake, Minn.

She enjoyed nature and loved her pets. She appreciated good music, beautiful flowers and treasured time spent with family and friends.

Violet is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Betts, of Madison Lake, Minn.; a son, Barry K. Orcutt and his wife, Barbara,of Beloit, Wis.; a step-daughter, Sandra Jennings and her husband, Elbert, of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Tressa May Waddingham, of Ventura, Iowa.

MASON CITY - Verdine V. Erickson, 70, of 23123 Thrush Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, Director of Spiritual Care of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Verdine was born on Nov. 15, 1932, the daughter of Harry D. Erickson and Mary E. Sazanovich in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1951 and attended a Mental Health Counselor Training Program for one year.

Verdine was an Inpatient Addiction Counselor at Prairie Ridge for 13 years until her retirement in 1996.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially when creating dried and silk floral arrangements, and other elements of home decorating. Verdine's love for gardening was easily seen in the wonderful gardens she cared for, and the beautiful flowers it produced. She also enjoyed spending time shopping and taking very good care of her pets, whom she loved so much.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Tom Overturf and wife, Kris, of Mason City; two daughters, Sally Overturf and husband, Paul Degan, of Mason City, and Lisen Overturf McCoy and husband, Jerry, of Mason City; grandchildren, Del Lane, Michael Overturf, Danette Sundheim, Renee, Mikayla and Tessa Overturf, and Timothy and Caitlin True; one uncle, Donald Sazanovich, of Mason City; two cousins, Andee Anderson and Emory Anderson Jr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; special Aunt, Virginia Anderson; and uncle, Emory Anderson Sr.

Margaret was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of Alvin and Emma (Burmeister) Brakel. She attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1932, and went on to attend Iowa State Teacher's College. Margaret graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. She then taught business courses in several communities in Iowa: Colewell, 1936-1937; Klemme, 1937-1939; New Sharon, 1939-1940, and Mason City High School from 1940 until her retirement.

She was an active member of several organizations: Iowa State Teacher's Association, National Teacher's Association, University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. Margaret was also well-traveled throughout Europe.

Those left the cherish her memory include her cousins, Darlene and Carl Lucas of Mason City, Sharlene and John Madouras of Kansas City, Mo., Louise Enright of St. Claire, Minn., George Burmeister of Humboldt, Texas, Judy and Larry Dew of Granite City, Mo., and Bob Burmeister of Mercer Island, Wash., and several other cousins.

PONCA, Neb. - Karen "Pinky" S. Geist, 59, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at her sister-in-law's residence in Ponca following a lengthy illness.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Karen was born on March 11, 1943, in Neligh, Neb., the daughter of Edgar R. and Olga "Hattie" H. (Spaet) Weigt.

Karen attended Norfolk High School in Norfolk, Neb. Karen also attended Norfolk Community College. She married Gary G. Geist on May 23, 1960, in Lincoln, Neb. She worked as a telephone operator in Lincoln.

She was a Head Start teacher in Santee, Neb. She was owner and operator of Kampers Kitchen in Santee, and owner and operator of an excursion boat business, Lady of the Lake, in Clear Lake. She enjoyed the outdoors.

Karen was devoted to the Lord, her husband, children and grandchildren, and was loved by everyone she touched.

Karen was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Survivors include her husband, Gary, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Jennifer L. and her husband, Loren Barnes, of Orangevale, Calif., and Kimberly K. and her husband, Pat Conrad, of Ponca; three granddaughters, Kamber, Korene and Kelsey Conrad, of Ponca; one sister, Harriet and her husband, Lloyd Cherrington, of Mission, Texas; one sister-in-law, Jacqueline R. and her husband, Lynn Hatcher, of Ponca, and many nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

DAVID KEVIN DAMMEN

OSAGE - David Kevin Dammen, 48, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

David was born Aug. 15, 1954, in Osage, the son of Karl and Connie (Berg) Dammen. He graduated from Osage High School in 1972. He attended Iowa State University for one year and then returned home to farm with his family, which is what he loved to do.

David was united in marriage to Susan Bartz on Sept. 7, 1974. at Grafton. For Dave, the simplest things in life brought him pleasure. He loved fishing, especially trips to northern Minnesota and Canada.

He loved spending time with his family and friends, and especially visiting his daughters. You could always find David driving the back roads, checking the crops.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

VINCENT - James "Jim" Anderson, 68, of Vincent, passed away Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at his residence in Vincent.

Jim, the son of Amos and Gurena (Warland) Anderson, was born March 12, 1934, in rural Fort Dodge. In 1937, he moved with his family to a farm near Vincent.

He attended Vincent Schools, graduating from Eagle Grove High School. After his schooling, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1958.

In 1960, Jim was united in marriage to Donna Lovik at Winnebago Lutheran Church near Lake Mills. They lived in the Thor area for several years, later moving to Vincent in 1984.

Jim was employed at NEW Co-op in Vincent and retired in 1995.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking and carving.

Jim is survived by his wife, Donna, of Vincent; sons, Dennis, of Aurora, Colo., and Gary and his wife, Carol, of Mason City; brother, Alvin and his wife, Gloria, of Eagle Grove, and sisters, Maxine Michelson, of Edina, Minn., and Gertrude Anderson of Excelsior, Minn., and Marvyl and her husband, Jalmer Eldal, of Brandon, S.D.

Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant brother, Mervin.

GALT - Beulah M. Draves, 93, of rural Galt and Dows, passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond, where she had been a resident for the past 7-1/2 years.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with Pastor Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will take place in the Vernon Township Cemetery, rural Dows.

Beulah Mary Ellingson was born Nov. 7, 1909, in the rural Popejoy and Alden, Iowa, area, the daughter of Carl and Lena (Keller) Ellingson. She attended country school near Popejoy.

On Aug. 29, 1927, Beulah was united in marriage with Harold W. Draves at Mason City. Beulah was a farmer's wife all her life, tending to her home and family.

She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Beulah was a very talented sewer, making many items for her daughter and granddaughters, and she was a wonderful cook.

Over the years, Beulah and Harold enjoyed spending their free time watching their granddaughters play softball.

Beulah is survived by her daughter, Shirley Whipple and her husband, Leslie, of Belmond; a son, Robert Draves and his wife, Karen, of Galt; four granddaughters, Debra Vanness, of Racine, Wis., Darla Kibsgaard and her husband, Randy, of Clear Lake, Sherri Roberts and her husband, Larry, of Kearney, Neb., and Lori Hain and her husband, Jeff, of Mason City; nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; a brother, Elmer Ellingson and his wife, Verdelle, of Alden; a sister, Ardelle Waggoner, of Dows; two sisters-in-law, Florence Barz, of Belmond, and Margaret Bartz, of Alexander, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold, in 1995; a grandson, Gail Lynne Jenison, and two brothers, Alvin and Burnell.

WILLIAM AZBELL

WAVERLY - William Azbell was born on New Year's Day in 1906 in Forest City Township, Mason County, Ill., the eldest son of Adison and Mary Kathryn (Frederick) Azbell, and died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003) at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Bill attended White Country School near Manito, Ill., and graduated as valedictorian from the Forest City High School in 1924. During high school, he won two athletic letters in basketball and two in track. Following high school graduation, he passed the teachers examination with the highest grade in Mason County.

Bill then worked for Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill., before beginning his first teaching job at Crescent School near Manito from 1924-1927. He then taught at Union School No. 1, Forest City, Ill., from 1927-1930; Dodd Country School from 1935-1936; High School in Cabrey, Ill., from 1936-1937, and finally high school in Medora, Ill., from 1937-1941, where he met Miss Irene L. Meyers, who also taught there.

The couple were united in marriage on June 26, 1939, at Troy, Mo. They remained at Medora until 1941, when they began teaching high school at Kankakee, Ill.

During Bill's early teaching years, he received his Ed.B. at Illinois State Normal University at Normal in 1933, and his M.A. at the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1934.

Bill did post-graduate studies work at Western Illinois State Teachers College at Macomb, University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, Wisconsin State College, University of California Berkeley and Davis, and the University of Denver, Colo.

His collegiate teaching career began at Indiana Central College, Indianapolis, in 1943; then Ball State teachers college at Muncie in 1944, followed by DePauw University of Greencastle, Ill., in 1945, University of Illinois at Urbana in 1946, Bradley University at Peoria from 1946-1952 and then Wartburg College in Waverly from 1952 until his retirement in 1972. During his tenure at Wartburg, he was chairman of the Physics Department.

He was baptized and confirmed on Nov. 28, 1930, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Bloomington, Ill., and was received into membership at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly on May 24, 1953.

He was a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and had served as treasurer of the Iowa Section for many years. He was the former chairman of the Physics Section of the State Academy of Science, and was a participating member in the Visiting Scientist Program at Iowa high schools.

He was a member of the Tyrell Masonic Lodge 116 A.F. & A.M., Waverly Chapter O.E.S. 353, and had served as treasurer of the Bremer County Democrats for many years.

As a young man, he learned beekeeping, and throughout his life has had as many as 15 colonies of honey bees at any one time. His other interests included coin collecting, stamp collecting and woodworking.

Bill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jack Reid of Greene; his son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Teresa Azbell of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kelly and Shirley Thompson of Waterloo, Heidi and Matthew Buddenberg of Decorah, Kathryn Reid of Greene; three great-grandchildren, Alanna and Kyle Thompson, and Emma Irene Buddenberg; three step-grandchildren, Paul and Kristi Fields, Robert and Amy Fields, Jennifer and David Evans all of Middletown, Ohio; nine stepgreat-grandchildren, Laryn, Sydney, Payne, Addisyn, Kinzer Fields, Javen Evans, Kolton Evans, Lexie and Robbie Fields; one sister, Elizabeth Fawer of Mercer, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, who died on Feb. 12, 1998; one daughter, Bonnie Mae Azbell, who died June 1, 1963; four sisters, Claudine Gathman, Lucille Williamson, Ethel Brownfield and Pearl Seeley, and six brothers, Paul, Nelson, Clarence, Clyde, Kelso and Earl Azbell.

Celebration of Life Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, including Masonic Rites conducted by Tyrell Lodge 116 A.F. & A. M. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.

KENYON VERBECKMOES

MASON CITY - Kenyon Verbeckmoes, 95, of Mason City, died on Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) in Phoenix, Ariz., where he spent the winter months with his children and grandchildren.

Born in Atkinson, Ill., he moved with his parents and two sisters to Clear Lake where he graduated from high school in 1926.

Self employed most of his life, he had several gourmet and specialty foods businesses under the name "Kenyon's" in Clear Lake and in Mason City.

Kenyon served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and while stationed in California, married Viola Bless of Clear Lake. Kenyon and Viola returned with their children to Mason City in 1961.

Kenyon loved to travel, hunt, fish and play pinochle.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and several civic organizations.

His mother Gertrude, father Art, sister Loretta Marshal and wife Viola preceded Kenyon in death.

His son, John Arthur and daughter-in-law, Peg, of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughter, Kay Busch, son-in-law, David, and grandchildren, Andrew and Adriene Busch, of Tempe, Ariz.; his sister, Maud Estelle Hayes, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews survive him.

A memorial service Mass and reception will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Therese was born on July 16, 1960, in Osage to Lester and Ann (Runde) Durben. She graduated from St. Ansgar High School and then completed the floriculture program at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Therese worked at a flower shop in Grinnell for three years.

She married Ed Halbach on Sept. 11, 1982, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Ed and Therese started Ed's Floral, a retail and wholesale plant business, in 1981. In 1986, they opened another full service retail flower shop in LeRoy, Minn.

Therese was a longtime board member of the St. Ansgar Dollar for Scholars. She was respected in the community for countless volunteer hours at the nursing home and during fund-raisers and civic events.

She was active in the Visitation Catholic Christian Mothers and kept the church beautiful with flowers. Her floral-design talents touched many people's lives as did her smile, kindness and compassion. Her personality was an expression of her sincerity.

Therese enjoyed gardening, reading, entertaining and visiting with family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her many close friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Arthur and Louise Durben; maternal grandparents, Theodore and Pauline Runde; and father-in-law, Jerome Halbach.

Therese is survived by her husband, Ed, of Stacyville; her parents, Ann and Lester Durben, of Meyer; three sisters, Sheila Durben of Meyer, Brenda Jensen and her husband, Del and their two children, Ami and Alex, of Plymouth, Minn., Marlene Weis and her husband, Rob, and their three children, Brittany, Willie and Ben, of Meyer. She was also admired and loved by her mother-in-law, Monica Halbach, of Stacyville; three sisters-in-law, Jeanne Traaseth and her husband, Pete, and daughter, Leah, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Angie Kruger and daughter, Stacey, of St. Ansgar, and Paula Halbach, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Joe Halbach and his wife, Deb, and their two daughters, Danielle and Jackie, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Mark Halbach and his wife, Teresa, of Glenville, Minn.

JAMES 'JIM' ANDERSON

VINCENT - James "Jim" Anderson, 68, of Vincent, passed away Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at his residence in Vincent.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at South Enes Lutheran Church in Vincent with the Rev. Susan Stone officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation was from held on Thursday at Bruce's Funeral Home in Fort Dodge.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Jim, the son of Amos and Gurena (Warland) Anderson, was born March 12, 1934, in rural Fort Dodge. In 1937, he moved with his family to a farm near Vincent.

He attended Vincent schools, graduating from Eagle Grove High School. After his schooling, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1958.

In 1960, Jim was united in marriage to Donna Lovik at Winnebago Lutheran Church near Lake Mills. They lived in the Thor area for several years, later moving to Vincent in 1984.

Jim was employed at NEW Co-op in Vincent and retired in 1995.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking and carving.

Jim is survived by his wife, Donna, of Vincent; sons, Dennis, of Aurora, Colo., and Gary and his wife, Carol, of Mason City; brothers, Alvin and his wife, Gloria, of Eagle Grove, and Eugene and his wife, Doris, of Madelia, Minn.; and sisters, Maxine Michelson, of Edina, Minn., Gertrude Anderson of Excelsior, Minn., and Marvyl and her husband, Jalmer Eldal, of Brandon, S.D.

Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant brother, Mervin.

MARK L. HANSON

MASON CITY - Mark L. Hanson, 43, of 2235 21st St. S.W., died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. Scott Duffus officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Mark was born, one of four children, to Donald and Elsie "Dutcher" Hanson on May 30, 1959, in Mason City. During his senior year, he participated as a coronet player with the Mason City High School Band, which won first place in a contest in Kansas. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1977.

He was employed at several North Iowa businesses, including Schneider Metal, NIACC, Hewitt Wholesale, Mason City Ice, Fleetguard and Holcim, where he worked for the last 12 years.

Through a friend, he met Rhonda S. Buckley and after two years of dating they were united in marriage on April 16, 1983, at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. To this union were born three daughters.

Since August of 2002, he has spent his time taking care of his two daughters and home and spending many weeks in Minneapolis at the Shriner's Hospital with Tess.

He was an active volunteer at Madison School.

His favorite pastime was hunting and fishing with his best buddy, Don, his dad. They hunted ducks, geese and pheasant. Several times, Mark took the girls road hunting. He fished at Big Blue for bluegill and St. Ansgar and Decorah for trout. He also found great pleasure in taking the family camping at Red Rock and Decorah. The last few months he also spent time on the Internet and selling items on eBay.

They were members of St. James Lutheran Church.

Those thankful in sharing Mark's life include his wife of 19 years, Rhonda; their two daughters, Paige Nichole and Tess Marlene Hanson; his parents, Don and Elsie Hanson, all of Mason City; one sister, Lisa and her husband, Tim Moorehead, of Grinnell; his brother, Gregory and his wife, Deborah Hanson, of Hutchinson, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Terry and Jeff Buckley; his mother-in-law, Ardis and her husband, Robert Haugen; and his grandfather-in-law, Alton Johnson, all of Clear Lake; three nieces; and four nephews.

His sister, Susan Marie Hanson, and one daughter, Nichole Maree, preceded Mark in death.

JOSEPH C. HADACEK JR.

DUNCAN - Joseph C. Hadacek Jr., 67, of Duncan, died Wednesday (January 29, 2003) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Jerry Blake as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan with military rites by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with a rosary at 6 p.m. followed by a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Joseph Charles Hadacek, the son of Joseph C. and Martha (Bouska) Hadacek, was born Sept. 24, 1935, on a farm near Britt. He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and Britt Community Schools.

Joe farmed for several years with his father and on April 8, 1953, entered the U.S. Army in Des Moines. He received his basic training at Camp Roberts in California and served his country overseas in a tank unit during the Korean War. On April 4, 1955, he received a medical discharge at Ft. Sheridan, Ill.

Joe returned to Iowa and worked at Armour in Mason City and later at the Wilson Packing Plant in Cedar Rapids. In 1962, he became disabled and returned to Britt. In 1986, he became a resident of Duncan Heights.

Joe was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and a lifetime member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He belonged to AMVETS, Clear Lake VFW, Clear Lake American Legion and Disabled American Veterans and was a former member of the AFL-CIO. He was also active in the Liberty Go-Getters 4-H Club in his younger years.

He is survived by a son, Kevin C. Hadacek of Des Moines; a brother, Robert Hadacek and his wife, Sharon, of Forest City; a sister, Patricia Juhl and her husband, Maynard, of Nora Springs; a sister-in-law, Betty Hadacek of Protivin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Hadacek.

PHYLLIS J. MIX

MASON CITY - Phyllis Jean Mix, 69, of 1707 S. Delaware Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves, coordinator of spiritual care at Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p. m. today and until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Phyllis Mix Memorial Fund.

Phyllis was born Dec. 2, 1933, in Mason City to Wallace Harry and Laura Jean (Blumenstiel) Rose. She attended school in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1951.

During high school, she worked for Stevenson's from September of 1950 to June of 1951. After graduation, she started working at the Cerro Gordo County Treasurer's Office, working there from June of 1951 to September of 1953. She then went to work for Garrison Building Store from September of 1953 to January of 1954.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Vernon Harold Mix on Sept. 4, 1952, at Sioux Falls, S. D.

From January of 1954 through November of 1967 she stayed at home to raise her children. Then she went to work at MBM in November of 1967, which became Metalcraft in January of 1986, where she was a production coordinator for calendars. She took early retirement in January of 1991.

Phyllis and Vern celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2002.

Phyllis enjoyed shopping at her "cheap" shops, cooking and making a home for her family. She was very creative and artistic. She was known for her sweet disposition and smile.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Vern; two sons, Steven Mix of Isle, Minn., and David (Kate) Mix and their daughters, Madison and McKayla, of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Lori Stoltenberg and her children, Sommer and Brock, of Mason City, and Diana (Merle) Klipping and daughter, Chloe, of Mason City; one daughter-in-law, Mona Ott of Mason City and her children, Rhea Mix of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Ryan Mix of Waverly (children of Larry Mix) and Taylor Ott of Mason City; one brother, Tom (Pam) Rose of Mason City; two sisters, Betty Dahl, of Manly and Janice Rose of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy; her parents; and a son, Larry Mix, who died Jan. 29, 1983. Larry was the twin brother of Lori (Mix) Stoltenberg.

CLEAR LAKE - Jack Norman Prestholt Sr., 70, 13957 Grouse Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Memorials may be given Hospice of North Iowa and the North Iowa Cancer Center.

Jack Norman Prestholt Sr. was born on June 9, 1932, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City to Clarence "Casey" and Mable Elsie (Mack) Prestholt. Jack graduated from the Clear Lake High School in 1950.

He was drafted into the Army and served from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. After his time of service, Jack returned to Clear Lake where he farmed on his father's farm and was employed by the Great Lake Pipeline in Clear Lake and the Farmers Grain Dealers Association in Mason City.

Jack was a gentle man who married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Shirley Mae Bell, on Feb. 23, 1952, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake. They were to celebrate 51 years of marriage this month. Their marriage was blessed with four children, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jack enjoyed trap shooting, football, boxing, animals, cruising the car lots, and when he was younger, he was an avid water-skier. Jack taught waterskiing lessons for many years and was often the first skier on Clear Lake each spring. Jack, along with two other friends, built the first ski jump on Clear Lake.

You knew you were special to Jack when he would give you a nickname, tickle or poke you or joke around and grin.

Jack was a member of the Clear Lake Antiques Association.

For the last 15 years, Jack joined Shirley in their lifelong hobby of collecting and selling antiques at Antique Alley in Clear Lake, which has been open for 25 years.

Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley Prestholt, of Clear Lake; one son, Jack Prestholt Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Mason City; two daughters, Jill Scharper and her husband, Kevin, of Forest City, and Julie Gobeli and her husband, Tracey, of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Aaron, James and Derek Prestholt and his wife, Dawn, Haleigh, Carly, Riley and Russell Scharper and Abbie and Catherine Gobeli; and four great-grandchildren, D.J., Devon, Drew and Delanie Prestholt. He will be missed by family and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Russell; and an infant granddaughter, Anna Noel Gobeli.
