RUTH JESSICA HANSEN

BOLAN - Ruth Jessica Hansen, 87, of Bolan, died Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bolan with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating.

According to her wishes and to help with the advancement of eradicating diseases, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Hospital Anatomy Department in Iowa City.

The family of Ruth Jessica Hansen has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bolan in her memory.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Jessica Hansen was born on Nov. 29, 1915, in Grand Mound, Iowa, the second of six children born to Martin and Martha (Paulson) Petersen. The family moved to Northern Iowa where Ruth attended country school and graduated from Plymouth High School.

She was united in marriage to Arthur H. White on April 26, 1936, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death in 1964. She and Art moved to Bolan in 1940 and became owners of the Bolan store, which they operated until his death.

She was united in marriage to George Hansen in September of 1966 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage, they continued in business together until his death in August 1999.

When the residents of Bolan were featured on the David Letterman show, Ruth was one of the spokespersons for the community. After the show aired, she received mail from all over the United States.

Ruth collected antiques for many years and eventually opened an antique shop in Bolan. She also took flying lessons and learned to fly her own plane. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her fellow pilots and the flights they took together.

She attended auctioneer school in Mason City and at the time, she was the oldest student ever registered at that school.

She was a member and very active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bolan, and was very active in the ladies groups.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Phyllis Young, of Denver, Colo., and Carla White, of Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren, Heather Young of Taos, N.M., Craig Young of San Francisco, Calif., Kirk Young of Denver, Colo., Angela Clark and her husband, Kevin, of Des Moines, Dale White of Forest City and Jessica White of Taos, N.M.; three great-grandchildren; three step-children, Bootie Kapler and her husband, Ike, of Cresco, Harold Hansen and his wife, Margie, of Davenport, and Norma Seligman and her husband, Andy, of Tipton; and their children and grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Pearson and her husband, Don, of Omaha, Neb.; and a brother, Marty Petersen, of San Diego, Calif.; as well as many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Arthur White and George Hansen; a son, Lee A. White, and three brothers, Ralph, Raymond and Robert Petersen, and a stepson, Leon Hansen.

DEAN A. PIERCE

MASON CITY - Dean A. Pierce, 69, of 1416 N. Ohio Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Travis Fisher officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour before the services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Dean Pierce Memorial Fund.

Dean was born March 29, 1933, in Clear Lake, the son of Donovan and Viola (Rankin) Pierce. He graduated from Fertile High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Dean married Linda A. Bendickson on Oct. 21, 1964, in Mason City. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Mason City for 20 years, retiring in 1998.

Dean was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, and enjoyed camping and family outings.

He is survived by a daughter, Deena Tesdahl and special friend, Clayton Boettcher, of Mason City; son, Shannon Pierce, of Mason City; grandchildren, Amber Myers and Brandon Anderson, of Mason City; sisters, Donna Ward and husband, Keith, of California, Louisa Mae Flores of Mason City and Kathleen Garcia of Mason City; brothers, Donovan Pierce and wife, Joanne, of Oskaloosa, Charles Pierce and wife, Juanita, of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Peggy Luck, of Plainfield, Yolanda Denhart, of Mason City, and Cory Dahlstrom, of Mason City.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda in 1991; brothers, James and Dana Pierce, and a daughter, Cheryl Myers in 1993.

RONALD LOGAN

CLEAR LAKE - Ronald Logan, 55, of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Jan.15, 2003) surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City (because of construction at Holy Family Catholic Church) with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Ronald Logan Memorial Fund.

Ron was born Sept. 17, 1947, in Mason City, to Martin L. and Elvera W. (Plagge) Logan. He attended school in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1967.

Ron then began work in a sheltered workshop for the Easter Seal Society, which became the North Iowa Vocational Center. He continued employment there until his health failed last fall.

Ron had been a resident of Opportunity Village for four years.

Ron loved people, and two of his greatest joys were his work and bowling.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the K.C. Bowling League.

Ron is survived by his mother, Elvera; one sister, Nancy (Rick) Delmonico, of Burnsville, Minn.; five brothers, Jim (Merrie Lee) Logan, of Baton Rouge, La., Joe (Debra) Logan, Randy (Teresa) Logan, Brian (Nancy) Logan and Brent (Sandy) Logan, all of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his father, Martin, and his uncle, Dean Plagge.

ROSE WASHBURN

CHARLES CITY - Rose Washburn, 74, a resident of 317 Fourth Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with the Rev. David Werges, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Fairmont Hills Cemetery, Willow Springs, Ill.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Deon McNamara

GARNER - Deon McNamara, 31, of Garner, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at his home.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

ELLIS ANN NEWMAN

MINNETONKA, Minn. - Ellis Ann Newman, 61, died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at her daughter's home in Minnesota City, Minn., following a courageous battle with cancer.

Ann was born June 13, 1941, in Mason City, to Morris and Ellis (Bracken) Laird. She married Alan L. Newman and they were later divorced.

Ann received her bachelor of arts degree in music from DePauw University in Indiana and was a music teacher and choir director in Little Falls, Minn., and Robinsdale, Minn.

She had also received a degree in computer programming and had been working for Chemrex in Twin Cities prior to her illness.

Ann had been the choir director for Bethany Covenant Church in Richfield, Minn., where she attended church. Ann is lovingly remembered for her love of music and traveling.

Survivors include her two daughters, Elle Newman and Kari Newman, both of Minnesota City, Minn.; two sisters, Moreen Fielden of LaJola, Calif., and Jo Laird of New Hampshire.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bethany Covenant Church, 7121 Bloomington Ave. S. in Richfield, Minn., with the Rev. David Kelly officiating. Interment of Ann's body has taken place at Hillside Cemetery in Minneiska, Minn.

GARY LYNN JASPERSEN

MASON CITY - Gary Lynn Jaspersen, 51, born Dec. 11, 1951, in Mason City, died on Jan. 8, 2003 in Denver, Colo.

Gary lived in Colorado for the last 20 years. He was an ironworker by trade.

Survivors include one son, Adam Jaspersen, of LeGrand, Iowa; parents, Herluf and Betty Bull Jaspersen, of Belton, Mo.; brother, Craig Jaspersen and his wife, Mary, of Peculiar, Mo.; sister-in-law, Nancy Jaspersen, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two nieces, six nephews, two great-nieces and one great-nephew; also, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Assembly of God Church, 1301 N. Carolina Ave. in Mason City.

ALLISON - Joyce P. Leerhoff, 69, of Allison, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

WEST DES MOINES - Lurleen "Becky" Iles Hillman, 92, wife of former Mayor Charles F. Iles, 909 Ashworth Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2003) at Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Interment will be in The Abbey Mausoleum at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines.

She was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She had lived in Des Moines since 1929. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She was a member of PEO Chapter KN, Des Moines Women's Club and Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son, Charles W. (Joanne) Iles, of Clive, Iowa; daughter, Denise S. "Denni Sue" (Tommy) Erickson, of Clear Lake; son, John W. Iles, of West Des Moines; grandson, Charles M. "Mike" (Kim) Iles; grandson, Mark (Lori) Iles; granddaughter, Diane (Craig) Parker; granddaughter, Andi Conway; grandson, Brandon Conway, and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Charles F. Iles and M. J. "Hap" Hillman.

GARNER - Deon McNamara, 31, of Garner died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at his home.

Deon McNamara, the son of Robert M. and SeHui (Kim) McNamara, was born Aug. 29, 1971 in Teague, South Korea. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1990. After high school he worked at the Clear Lake Bakery, Garner Pizza Hut, IMT in Garner and Hardee's in Garner where he was currently employed.

On Aug. 7, 1999 he married Tracey Young at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived in Garner with their two daughters, Dakota and Montana.

Deon was active in martial arts as a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was a founding member of Team Rogue, a traveling martial arts team. Deon enjoyed his family and his 1979 Camaro.

He is survived by his wife, Tracey, of Garner; two daughters, Dakota and Montana of Garner; his father, Robert McNamara of Meservey and his special friend, Deanna; his mother, SeHui McNamara of Mason City and her special friend, Richard Kamish; his paternal grandmother, Marcia Pietersen and her husband, Francis, of Manly; his mother-in-law, Jean Young, of Garner; two brothers-in-law, Todd Young of Garner and Tom Young of Duncan; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert McNamara Sr.; his maternal grandfather, SeHon Lee and his maternal grandmother, Chong Ja Lee; and his father-in-law, Don Young.

GARY LYNN JASPERSEN

MASON CITY - Gary Lynn Jaspersen, 51, born Dec. 11, 1951 in Mason City, died on Jan. 8, 2003 in Denver, Colo.

Gary lived in Colorado for the last 20 years. He was an ironworker by trade with Local No. 24 in Denver, Colo.

Survivors include one son, Adam Jaspersen, of LeGrand, Iowa; parents, Herluf and Betty Bull Jaspersen, of Belton, Mo.; brother, Craig Jaspersen and his wife, Mary, of Peculiar, Mo.; sister-in-law, Nancy Jaspersen, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two nieces; six nephews; two great-nieces and one great-nephew; also many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Jaspersen on Jan. 29, 1992; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the First Assembly of God Church, 1301 N. Carolina Ave. in Mason City.

Memorials may be made to the Gary Jaspersen Memorial Fund in care of Herluf and Betty Jaspersen, 6 First Ave. Belton, Mo. 64012. Memorials will be used for a headstone.

REBA RUTH FLESHNER

WICKENBURG, Ariz. - Mrs. Reba Ruth Fleshner, 85, a resident of Wickenburg, Ariz., died on Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at the home of her sister and brother-in-law in Congress, Ariz. She was a former resident of Clear Lake.

Mrs. Fleshner was born June 8, 1917 in Marshall County, the daughter of Nettie Gibbs-Howard and Fred Howard.

She graduated from Marshalltown High School and went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College.

Mrs. Fleshner married Vernon Fleshner on April 12, 1936. They were married for 60 years.

Mrs. Fleshner was a member of the First Congregational Church of Mason City and a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She also belonged to the FDP and Home Improvement Clubs and was very active with the Clear Lake Senior Citizen's Center, where she volunteered much of her time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; daughter, Beverly Fleshner; sister, Marie Kunzman; and close friend, John Frahm.

Survivors include her grandson, Dan K. Huntley of Carrollton, Texas; grandaughter, Wendy J. Yanney of Grand Prairie, Texas; great-grandchildren, Allison, Kaitlyn and Hannah Huntley of Carrollton, Texas and Rayce, Ryan and Reid Yanney of Grand Prairie, Texas; sister, Ginny O'Hagan of Congress, Ariz.; and brother, Glenn Howard, of Coarsegold, Calif.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Wickenburg, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held in Clear Lake in the summer of 2003.

Reba was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was also the world's greatest optimist. She will be missed by all.

SUMNER -Ernest George Dedor, 76, died Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sumner with the Rev. George Volkert officiating. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township in rural Sumner.

IRENE LUCILLE ROWE OLESON

HAMPTON - Irene Lucille Rowe Oleson, 85, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at Cedarview Nursing Home, Owatonna, Minn.

Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday.

Irene was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Hampton to Charles T. and Alvena Shaefer Rowe. She baptized at the Chapin Congregational Church on Sept. 16, 1922. In 1935 she graduated from Hampton High School.

On Nov. 9, 1935, she married John Oelson in Mason City. She was a homemaker and helped her husband with the farm.

Irene was baptized, confirmed and a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader in Minnesota.

She is survived by a son, Arland Oleson and his wife, Marian, of Moorhead, Minn.; two daughters, Arlene Johnson and her husband, Gene, of Owatonna, Minn., and Marilyn Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Dale Johnson, Paul Oleson, Karen Oleson Aulino, Jay Johnson, Erika Oleson, Neal Oleson, Matthew Anderson, and Heather Anderson Fletcher; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, John Oleson in June 1969; and all seven brothers, Lewis Rowe, Elmer Rowe, Alfred Rowe, Wayne Rowe, Rolland Rowe, William Rowe, and Raymond Rowe.

WALLACE M. JOHNSON

CLEAR LAKE - Wallace M. Johnson, 80, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of Christ in Fertile, with the Rev. Curt Gallmeyer and the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

The family of Wallace M. Johnson has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.

Wallace M. Johnson was born on Aug. 14, 1922, in rural Kensett, the son of Merrill and Amanda (Sorenson) Johnson. He attended and received his education in the rural schools, and also attended Mason City High School.

Wally was a lifelong farmer. He farmed in the Kensett, Manly and Hanlontown areas, and moved to a farm north of Clear Lake in 1956, where he lived until the time of his death.

Wally retired from farming in 1981, but continued to help his son, Randy, with the spring and fall field work. He also worked in the lab at the American Crystal Sugar Company in Mason City for several years.

Wally liked to go to the café in Fertile every morning, then to the elevator in Hanlontown, where he drank coffee and visited with his many friends. In his earlier years he enjoyed making frequent trips to Long Beach, Calif.

In 1956, he was united in marriage to Joan Christianson in Graettinger, Iowa, and to this union were born three children, Randy, Julie and Jackie.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Randy Johnson and his wife, Beth, of Clear Lake, Julie Oltrogge and her husband, Stuart, of Eagan, Minn., and Jackie Wilson and her husband, Mike, of Clive, Iowa; three granddaughters, Abby and Hannah Wilson, of Clive, and Emily Oltrogge, of Eagan, Minn.; three brothers, Amil Johnson of Manly, Floyd Johnson and his wife, Norma, of Clear Lake, and Marlin Johnson and his wife, Joanna, of Clear Lake; and one uncle, Kelly Sorenson, of Hanlontown; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances Doran.

BEVERLY FRITZ

BRITT - Beverly Fritz, 72, of Britt, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at her home in Britt of heart and lung disease.

Funeral services for Beverly Fritz will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Wesley with the Rev. Lyndon W. Roesler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Beverly, the daughter of Harold and Clara Johnson Price, was born Oct. 29, 1930 in Mason City. She attended Mason City schools until 1943, then her family moved to Algona until 1947. Beverly graduated from Wesley High School in 1948.

In 1949, Beverly was united in marriage with George Ostercamp of Wesley. To this union five children were born.

Beverly was married to Don Fritz of Britt in 1974. The couple made their home in Britt.

Beverly managed Casey's General Store in Britt for 10 years. She then opened and operated Bev's Corner Store in Crystal Lake in 1990 until she retired in 1996.

Beverly was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wesley, where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday and Bible School and played the organ for church. She was also a member of UMW and was on several committees through the church. She loved her church family and missed them when she couldn't attend church for health reasons. She always looked forward to Verna's visits and love.

Beverly is survived by her loving husband, Don; two daughters, Jan Drabek and her husband, Larry, of Britt, and Denise Betten and her husband, Craig, of Britt; three sons, Mike Ostercamp and his wife, Rhonda, of Britt, Gary Ostercamp and his wife, Ann, of Britt, Kevin Ostercamp and his wife, Carol, of Sullivan, Ill.; three stepchildren, whom she loved as her own, Don Fritz Jr. of Tuckerstown, Bermuda, Jon Fritz and Karen Beauchamp, both of Seattle, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Beverly is also survived by one sister, Marilyn Pecoy and her husband, Don, of Sexton; one brother, Duane Price and his wife, JoAnn, of Austin, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Duane Vaudt, of Clear Lake; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, her little friend Holly Beenken; and her faithful and loving buddy, Spud.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1971, mother in 1991 and sister, Joan Vaudt, in 1999.

IOWA FALLS - Ralph Lease, 78, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident near Goodell, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 on Monday at Saint Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, with burial at the Saint Mark's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls chapel with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary.

Ralph Eugene Lease was born Dec. 1, 1924, at his parents farm in Burnett County, Wis. as the son of Ralph Julius and Martha (Peschl) Lease. He attended his first year of school in Webster, Wis., before moving to Foley, Minn., graduating from Foley Community Schools in 1942. He began his love for football as the quarterback for his high school team. He then attended St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., until entering the United States Navy on December 9, 1944, serving on the USS Gilmer and the USS Golden City as a radio man.

Ralph was united in marriage to Bonnie June Wise at Holy Family Church, June 21, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa. To this union 11 children were born: Georgia, Corrine, Catherine, Ralph, Jr., Michael, Teresa, Diane, Joseph, Thomas, Angie, and Mary.

Ralph was employed by Western Electric, Northwestern Bell Telephone, and US West as a Telephone Technician, retiring in 1986 after 40 years of service.

Ralph and Bonnie then operated the Junction Truck Stop north of Iowa Falls until 1989. Ralph also drove cars for Dale Howard, which gave him further chance to travel.

Ralph loved life and the St. John's Johnnies' football team, following them around the country. There were no strangers in his life, only new friends. Ralph always had a joke or story to tell. He never passed a casino or a Sam's Club without stopping for a visit.

Ralph was a member of the St. Mark Parish, Iowa Falls, Hyman - Peavey American Legion Post 188, Iowa Falls; and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8708, Iowa Falls.

NORTHWOOD - Letha F. Selvig, 81, of Northwood, died Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer of First Lutheran Church in Northwood officiating. Burial will be in the Hamlet Cemetery in Hamlet, Ill.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of services on Sunday at the chapel.

Letha F. Selvig was born on May 22, 1921, the daughter of Jesse James and Grace (Poland) Fifield in Joy, Ill. She attended and received her education in the Joy, Ill. School system, graduating from Joy High School in 1939.

She was united in marriage to Ward "Micky" Michael Peters on June 21, 1939, in Joy, Ill. After their marriage they farmed together in Mercer County, Ill., until his death in 1960.

Letha was also an accountant at a farm implement dealership and a doctor's office and was a nurse's aide at a county nursing home in Aledo, Ill., before moving to Independence, Mo., in 1960, where she worked for the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and also worked as an accountant at the church's Social Service Center.

She was united in marriage to Eugene Morrison in 1963, in Independence, Mo. After their marriage they moved to the Lake of the Ozarks where they owned and operated a motel before moving to Blue Springs, Mo., where she was a Shaklee dealer.

Eugene and Letha enjoyed going in the winter to Black Canyon City, Ariz. Eugene preceded her in death in September of 1988.

Letha was united in marriage to Russell Selvig on April 23, 1992, in Independence, Mo., and moved to Northwood in May 1992, where Russell resided. Letha and Russell enjoyed spending several winters in Fort Myers, Fla.

She loved music and singing, and was known for singing as one of the "Joy Sisters" on a weekly radio program in Muscatine, Iowa. She also sang in the "Messiah" choir and in a choir in Independence, Mo.

Letha enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, fishing, and cooking, but her great love and enjoyment was her family.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Russell Selvig, of Northwood; three daughters, Bonnie M. Martin, of Milan, Ill., Roberta L. DuBose and F. June Harvey, of Independence, Mo.; a son, William M. Peters of Independence, Mo.; seven stepdaughters, Jeannie Lentz, of Sumner, Mo., Rosemary Fall and her husband, James, of Minneapolis, Minn., Carol Vandell and her husband, Daniel of Medford, Ore., Rebecca Reyes and her husband, Jose, of Minneapolis, Minn., Margaret Selvig of Minneapolis, Minn., Betty Rogers and her husband, Harry, of Petersburg, Alaska, and Shirley Cooper and her husband, Neil, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; five stepsons, Daniel Selvig and his wife, Dr. Dawn Stavish of Platte, S.D., Donald Selvig and his wife, Diane, of Huntley, Minn., Kenneth Selvig and his wife, Mary, of Apple Valley, Minn., Richard Selvig, of Plymouth, Minn., and Peter Selvig and his wife, Lynn, of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren include Gerald W. MAUSTON, Wis. - Evan Thomas "Tom" Compton Jr., originally from Mason City, Iowa, died late Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) in a car accident in Wisconsin.

Tom was born Oct. 19,1943, to Evan Thomas Compton Sr. and Verna Lucille Rice. He attended school at North Central of Manly. He moved to Wisconsin in 1963. He was united in marriage to Debra L. Enslow in 1978. They had a daughter, Brynn Pier.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and one sister.

Those who will miss him are his wife, Debra L. Compton, of Mauston, Wis.; daughter, Brynn Pier Compton, of Virginia, Minn.; brothers, Gilbert John Fenske, of Wisconsin Dells , Wis. and Merton Earl of Iowa; sisters, Marlene Gelner, of Mason City, Viola Pearl Cornelius of Minneapolis, Minn., Zerna Zellmer of Baraboo, Wis., Mary Etta McDowell, of Rembrant, and Joyce Maddox of Danville, Ky.

Helen M. Harmon died on Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Helen M. Dole, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Loss) Dole, was born Sept. 11, 1909, in Irvington. After attending rural elementary schools and high school in Algona, she did domestic work for a time.

On Sept. 17, 1935, she married Chester Harmon in Algona. They farmed near Woden and then near Bancroft before purchasing and moving to a farm in Plum Creek Township in 1944.

Helen and Chester were avid dancers and seldom missed a dance in the area. After the death of her husband in 1987, Helen moved to Algona.

She was instrumental in founding a countywide school for mentally retarded children, which evolved into today's Exceptional Opportunities.

She was a member of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church and Farm Bureau.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. and Betty Harmon, of Algona; six grandchildren and their spouses, Charles D. Harmon, Elizabeth Hurlburt and her husband, Dave, Susan Kellner and her husband, George, Diana Mogler and her husband, Eric, Anthony Harmon and his wife, Tracy, and Mary Hauptmann and her husband, Sid; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. One sister, Marvel Immerfall, of Algona, also survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Judith in 1972; one daughter, Mary Jane in 1986; sisters, Lucille Greene, Evelyn Thilges, and Mildred Mescher; and one brother, Elmer Dole.

Victor James Praska was born Nov. 17, 1915, at home on the farm near Alta Vista, the son of John and Anna (Koudelka) Praska. He received his education at the Deerfield rural school and at Alta Vista.

On May 2, 1939, he was united in marriage to Rose Komarek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed the "home place" until retiring in 1977, at which time they moved to Charles City.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters. Victor enjoyed fishing, playing cards, attending area church picnics and visiting with everyone.

Living family members include his children, Jane Pitzen (Gene) of Stacyville and Don Praska (Karen) of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step-great-granddaughters; and a sister, Marcella Meirick of Alta Vista.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Rose, in 1978; two brothers, Emil and Ralph Praska, and three sisters, Rose Chihak, Lucy Berka and Florence Vick.

Cora was born Sept. 18, 1909, in Kanawha, the daughter of Henry and Katie (Bohlen) Kamp. She was confirmed and baptized at Wright Christian Reformed Church, rural Kanawha, where she served as the pianist for several years. She attended school in Kanawha.

Cora married George Watermiller on Oct. 24, 1931.

She was a member of Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, baking her homemade cinnamon rolls and having coffee with her friends at Hy-Vee. She enjoyed her special friends at the IOOF Home. The family would like to thank the staff for the care she received while she was a resident there. Cora loved her Lord, church and family dearly.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elaine Pitkin of Clear Lake and Vergene Koenen and her husband, Byron, of Clear Lake; two granddaughters, Valerie Kohler and husband, Wayne, of Meservey, and Renae Reschly of Bothell, Wash.; three great- grandsons, Shawn, Brandon and Matthew Koehler; one great- great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

EDWARD 'HOOLIE' WACHSMANN

MASON CITY - Edward "Hoolie" Wachsmann, 85, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 20, 2003) at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be from 5 to7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hoolie was born March 19, 1917, in Charles City, the son of Fred J. Wachsmann and Ida Lindemeier.

He was united in marriage to Helen Maish on May 12, 1979, in Wisconsin. Hoolie built and operated the E & R Car Wash in Mason City.

He and his wife lived above the car wash, where they enjoyed watching the wildlife from their porch that overlooked the Winnebago River.

Hoolie has always had a love for wildlife and the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. As he grew older, he and his wife enjoyed feeding the ducks and deer from their porch. Hoolie and Helen also shared many special trips together as they traveled all over the United States.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Helen Wachsmann of Mason City; a son, Roger Owens and wife, Karen, of Tripoli; a daughter, Donna Decker of Allen, Texas; six grandchildren, Lisa, Shelly, Dixie, Derek, Collin and Amy; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley John Wachsmann of Mason City; a nephew, Gerold Wachsmann and wife, Lois, of Palm Beach, Fla., and a niece, Sherry Block and husband, Gene, of Minneapolis, Minn.

LORETTA LONG

THORNTON - Loretta C. Long, 88, of Thornton, died Friday (Jan. 17, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Loretta Keough was born July 27, 1915, the daughter of Thomas and Loretta Keough, near Garner. She received her education in Hancock County, Iowa.

Loretta married Leland Long in 1936. They farmed northwest of Thornton until retirement. Following retirement, they moved into Thornton. Leland died in 1969.

In 1980, Loretta married Stanley E. Long. They established their home in Thornton, where Stanley still resides.

Loretta was a devoted homemaker who was a friend to all. She always had cookies or pie prepared for anyone who visited. She was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she had been very active.

Loretta did not have any biological children, but she loved Stanley's two daughters and two sons, and she always opened their home to them as well as her family and 31 nieces and nephews. She enjoyed traveling to see all of the children and grandchildren.

Loretta is survived by her husband, Stanley, and his two sons, the Rev. Ed Long and family, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Fran Long and family, Fort Dodge; two daughters, Jackie Gray and family, Alpharetta, Ga., and Heidi Moore and family, Plattsburg, N.Y. Also surviving are her brothers, Joe Keough and family, Forest City, and Tom Keough and family, Amsterdam, Mo.; sister-in-law, Carol Keough and family, Fertile; half-brother, Kenneth Chapman and family, California, and a special friend, Gertrude Clemons of Thornton.

Loretta is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Morrisey, and brothers, Bill Keough, James Keough and Clifford Keough.

Loretta will be greatly missed by all of her friends and family.

ELMER L. SMITH

WODEN - Elmer L. Smith, 82, of Woden, died Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) at the Titonka Care Center.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center with the Rev. Lois Abels officiating. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery south of Woden. Military rites will be conducted by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Elmer LaVerne Smith, the son of Edward LaVerne and Edna (Payne) Jones, was born Dec. 2, 1920, at Mason City. At the age of 10, his aunt and uncle, Clara and Claus Smith, adopted him. He attended rural school east of Woden and farmed with his father, Claus.

On April 1, 1938, he married Pearl Tollagson at Forest City. They made their home in Woden.

On Nov. 7, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army Air Force, serving his country during World War II. After his discharge in February of 1946, he returned to Woden, where he continued farming and drove school bus. In 1980, Elmer and Pearl retired from farming.

For the next 22 years, they spent winters in Texas. In March of 2002, Elmer became a resident of the Titonka Care Center. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and traveling.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center and a former member of the United Methodist Church in Woden. He belonged to the Woden American Legion Post No. 628 and the Elks Lodge in McAllen, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl, of Woden; an aunt, Ruby Holder of Rochester, Minn., and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Violet, in infancy.

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Boyington was born July 6, 1911, in Kentucky to Phlander Lamberson and Nancy (King) Lamberson. She was a graduate of Iowa Falls High School and then worked as a nanny in Mason City for ten years prior to marriage.

She married Hugh Boyington on March 15, 1939, in Nashua. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1983.

Mrs. Boyington was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in the Dows and Riceville area for many years. She had been a member of the Riceville Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Olive (Mrs. James) Anderton of Maquoketa; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Lee (Mrs. Elmer) Wilting of Winchester, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Claude, in 1990, and four brothers.

LUELLA R. (NEWTON) HOISINGTON

OSAGE - Luella R. (Newton) Hoisington, 86, died Saturday (Jan. 18, 2003) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

She was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Osage, the daughter of Roy and Arlie (Taylor) Fish. Luella was educated in the Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School.

She was united in marriage to Howard Newton on Jan. 1, 1939, in her parents' home near Osage. They farmed southeast of Osage. Howard died in 1989.

Luella was united in marriage to Vernon Hoisington on May 31, 1992, at First Baptist Church in Osage. Vernon died in 1996.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and served on various church boards. She enjoyed playing the piano, embroidering and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Osage with the Rev. Roger Davis officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

KANAWHA - Edward F. Louk Jr., 48, of Kanawha, passed away on Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Edward Franklin Louk Jr. was born on June 2, 1954, at Baltimore, Md., the son of Edward and Margaret M. Harris Louk Sr. He was raised and educated in Baltimore.

Following his education, Ed worked at various jobs in Baltimore before working at Giant Foods for over seven years.

In October of 1994, Edward and his wife, Diane, moved to Kanawha, Iowa, to be closer to family. Ed initially worked for DeCoster Farms in Clarion and then spent a short time working for Garner Workshop in Garner. For the last six years, he has been employed by the Pizza Ranch in Belmond. Ed also was a Globe Gazette carrier in Kanawha for over seven years.

Edward loved to spend his time riding his bicycle, and would even ride it to work if the weather permitted. He enjoyed watching wrestling and baseball on television, and he liked to put together model cars and do word puzzles. While he was in Baltimore, Edward was a sergeant of arms in the Sons of the American Legion.

Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Diane, of Kanawha; a son, Scott Wade Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Kanawha; three grandchildren, Vincent, Layla and David Wade; his "mewmaw" or grandmother, Margaret Harris, of Baltimore, Md.; an aunt, Elsie Creighton, of Baltimore; a sister-in-law, Dreama Jones and her husband, Dan, of Kanawha, and four nieces and nephews, Danielle, Kayla, Chris and Logan Jones, all of Kanawha.

ST. ANSGAR - Becky Marie Dockstader (Gruhn), 73, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at her home in St. Ansgar.

Becky (Beck) was born on Jan. 15, 1930, to Fred and Gertrude (Becker) Gruhn in Manning, Iowa. She graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1947 and received her nursing degree from Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines. She went to work in Fort Dodge for a time.

Doc and Becky met on a blind date and it was a year before he could catch up with her. They married on April 18, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Following Doc's graduation in 1955, they moved to New Orleans, then returned to St. Ansgar in August of 1957.

Becky served on the school board and was an AEA member as well. She was many a pets' friend and remembered their names more often than their owners.

She will be greatly missed and held close in the hearts of her family as we celebrate her life as a love that will never die.

Becky is survived by six daughters, Chris and her husband, Larry Wadman, of Annandale, Minn., Julie and her husband, Melvin Schroeder, of St. Ansgar, Mary and her husband, Al Sommerfeld, of Derby, Kan., Holly and her husband, Rick Schwarck, of St. Ansgar, Kelly and her husband, Sean Shanahan, of Hull, Ma., and Wendie Dockstader of Iowa City; two sons, Peter Dockstader of St. Ansgar, and John and his wife, Lisa Dockstader, of St. Ansgar; 15 grandchildren who were blessed with her kindness and gentleness; two sisters, Dorthy and her husband, Darial Detterman, of Milford, Iowa, and Margie Linquist of Lakewood, Colo.

Anna Dorothy was born April 7, 1898, in Dahlgren Township, Carver County, Minn., the daughter of Frank Thaemert and Valeria Bipes. She was baptized July 17, 1898, at Cologne Methodist Church, Cologne, by the Rev. Gotthilf Raihle and was confirmed on May 18, 1921, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Chaska, Minn., by the Rev. O.H. Schmidt.

She married Alfred Paschka in 1921. He passed away on Dec. 11, 1943.

On July 6, 1950, Anna Dorothy was married to Fred Wildung at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carver by the Rev. Panning. Fred passed away on Aug. 17, 1972.

Anna Dorothy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Edward Brown of Farragut, Iowa; grandchildren, Bonnie, Randy, Kathy, Brenda and Steven; stepdaughters, Hilma Rolf of Watertown, Minn., and Leona Stender of Waconia, Minn.; stepdaughter-in-law, Ordelia Wildung of Watertown; six step-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Bertha Noll of Carver; a brother, Carl Thaemert of Cologne; a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Earl and Lois Lemke of Cologne, Eleanor Thaemert of Chaska, and Beatrice Thaemert of Carver, and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

On June 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to Lonnie Cory, also in Gatesville. Then in 1954 the couple moved to Mason City.

Bonnie enjoyed bingo, playing cards, dancing, camping and fishing, and she loved her cats.

She is survived by her husband, Lonnie, of Kensett; four daughters, Connie (Jim) Nitcher of Manly, Pamela (Gary) Fett of Omaha, Neb., Tammy Cory and Paul Grouette of Mason City, and LuLonie (Dave) Nitcher of Manly; seven grandchildren, Chad (Michelle) Kamish, Matt (Alissa) Kamish, Luke Kamish, Elijah Kamish, Jessie Fett, Casey Cory and Cortney Cory; four great-grandchildren, Brooke and Jace Kamish, Lexi Fett and Jackson Kamish; and one brother, Kermitt States, of Hollywood, Calif.

Bob was born April 3, 1941, in Middletown, N.Y., the son of David S. and Bertha (Struble) McCarey Sr. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1959 and went on to earn a degree from The College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich.

He married Patricia (Pat) Depuy on June 27, 1964, in Middletown, N.Y. The couple moved to Detroit, where Bob was employed by Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, Mich. They moved to Clear Lake in 1976 when Bob joined Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa. He retired from the company in December 1998 after 23 years of service.

He enjoyed spending winters in Florida and pursuing his hobbies of golf, boating, woodworking and home improvements.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Counsel No. 7898 and member of the Mason City Elk's Lodge No. 375.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Clear Lake; two sons, Robert James (R.J.) McCarey and his wife, Julie, of Newton, and Brian McCarey and his wife, Kathy, of Carroll; his mother, Bertha McCarey Krawiec, of Middletown, N.Y.; three brothers, John McCarey and his wife, Winifred, of Middletown, N.Y., Leo McCarey and his wife, Sharon, of Greenville, N.Y., and James McCarey and his companion, Brenda Cosner, of Middletown, N.Y.; a sister, Audrey Murray and her husband, Harold R., of Middletown, N.Y.; a sister-in-law Dorothy McCarey, of Middletown, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth, Harrison Robert, Andrew Patrick, Erin Marie, Austin Patrick, and Meghan Elizabeth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Following cremation, inurnment will take place in the Marble Rock Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, with a Masonic service beginning at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Harold J. Taylor Memorial Fund.

Harold was born on a farm near Guernsey, Iowa , on Jan. 29, 1914, the son of Emmett and Mary Ann (Johnston) Taylor. Harold attended Guernsey Community Schools and graduated in 1931. Mr. Taylor farmed with his family until 1934, when his younger brother took over the management of the farm.

In 1934 he enrolled in the Cedar Rapids Business College graduating in 1935. After graduating, he was employed by Wilson and Co. Inc., first as an office assistant, and then as office manager in Reinbeck. He later transferred to Oelwein and Faribault, Minn. In 1942 he resigned to go home and operate the family farm while his brother served in the military.

In 1945, Harold was rehired by Wilson & Co. and became the assistant plant manager at the turkey processing plant. In 1947, Harold became the manager of rural and city properties owned by Ralph P. Waller. During that time he oversaw the installation of more than 35 miles of clay tile on one 320-acre farm. In 1952, Mr. Taylor bought a farm west and south of Marble Rock where he farmed until his retirement in 1988, after which he moved to Mason City.

During his life Mr. Taylor was active in many agricultural organizations. He was the first chairman of the Floyd County Extension Council. He served on the Floyd County Soil and Water Conservation Board as commissioner for eight years, seven years on the Floyd County ASCS Board, 29 years on the Butler County REC Board, and 18 years on the Corn Belt Power Corporation Board.

Mr. Taylor was an active member of the United Methodist Church for more than 75 years. During this time he served on numerous committees including chairman of the Administrative Board and Financial Secretary of the Marble Rock Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Marble Rock and later Mason City. In addition, he was a member High Twelve, White Shrine as well as a 40-year member of the Lion's Club.

Mr. Taylor married Dorothy Polly of Reinbeck in 1940. To this marriage two children were born: John (Jack) of Marble Rock and Mary Taylor Scott of Mingo. His wife, Dorothy, died in 1968. In 1969 he married Ethel Gratias Moser of Marble Rock. They made their home southwest of Marble Rock until 1988 when they moved to Mason City

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, of Mason City; his son, Jack Taylor and wife, Marcia, of Marble Rock, his daughter, Mary Scott and her husband, Craig, of Mingo; daughter, Marlene Gjerset and her husband, Dave, of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Michael and Gina Taylor of Mason City, Pam Taylor Datema and Ronn of Des Moines, Angela Scott Mark and Kenny of Chariton, Chris and Kristen Scott of Indianola, Dawn Scott Gibson and Sean of Ankeny, Sheri Gjerset of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Susan Gjerset of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Floyd of Topeka, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dorothy; a brother, John; and two sisters, Leona Stephens and Margaret Taylor.

CLARION - Neola M. Billman, 78, of Clarion, died Saturday (Jan. 18, 2003) at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

WESLEY - William G. Green, 85, of Wesley died Saturday Jan. 18, 2003) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Thursday.
