ADAM R. DURYEE

LELAND - Adam R. Duryee, 31, of Leland, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf, officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery in Leland.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.



Adam Ray Duryee was born on Sept. 28, 1971, in Britt, the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (King) Duryee. Adam graduated from Forest City High School in 1990. He attended NIACC for two years and Mankato State for four years.

At that time Adam began working for Fleetguard in Lake Mills.

He enjoyed winter sports and loved to go snowmobiling. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

Adam is survived by his parents, Leonard and Betty Duryee, of Leland; his sister, Susan Wheeler and her husband, Jim, and their children, Jenna and Mariah, all of Des Moines; his brother, Kevin Duryee and his wife RoseAnn and their children, Jenny and Cory, all of Forest City; his grandmother, Pearl Duryee, of Riceville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Adam was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Genevieve King; his paternal grandfather, Gernard Duryee; three uncles, Vern, Marvin and Larry; and an aunt, Mary Jane.

THELMA L. RIKANSRUD

MASON CITY - Thelma Lucile Rikansrud, 91, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

MASON CITY - Mabel N. Pippert, 99, of Mason City, died on Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

ROBERT 'BOB' E. PATTERSON

CHARLES CITY-Robert "Bob" E. Patterson, 67, of 801 Howard St., Charles City, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag and the Rev. David Werges, officiating. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City and again one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Robert Patterson Memorial Fund to be disbursed to Hospice and the Mercy Cancer Center.

Robert was born July 5, 1935, in Charles City, the son of Jay Walter and Ivy Luella. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1954.

Robert was united in marriage to Marlys (DeWalle) on Aug. 24, 1957, at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City where he was a member also.

Robert enjoyed woodworking, fishing, stock car racing, and coin collecting. He loved to spend time with his family, especially with his grandkids. Robert will be missed dearly by family and friends who shared his life.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Marlys; two sons, Quinn Patterson, his wife, Renee, of Sigourney, Iowa, and Kevin Patterson and his wife, Tina, of Charles City; one brother, William "Bud" Patterson and his wife, Marge, of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Donna Patterson, of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Jodee, Dylan, Megan, and Emily; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Joslin, and Mildred White; and one brother, Dale Patterson.

TROY L. KNAPP

CHARLES CITY - Troy L. Knapp, 84, of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, passed away on Monday morning (Dec. 30, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, of complications following a stroke suffered on Dec. 25, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Trinity Methodist Church in Charles City, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery at Nashua.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Troy L. Knapp was born on Oct. 4, 1918 in rural Nashua, to Vern and Grace (Harmon) Knapp. He attended Maple Grove Country School.

Troy served as a sergeant during World War II where he was injured in a B-29 Mission over the Asiatic-Pacific Territory.

He was united in marriage to Anna Conner on Jan. 12, 1948 in Charles City.

Troy worked for Charles City Implement and Nashua Implement as a parts and service manager and farmed retiring in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Knapp, of Charles City; one son, Lonnie (Nancy) Knapp, of Hemet, Calif.; one daughter, Shirley (Joel) Rasmussen, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Eric, Jaime and Dusty Knapp, Adam and Alicia Rasmussen.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell, Dale and Vernon Jr.; five sisters, Alice Johnson, Avis Downs, Ethel Allison, Lucille Pevestorf, and Neva Ullrich.

RICHARD 'DICK' E. DAY

DES MOINES - Mr. Richard "Dick" E. Day, 69, of 6108 Clark St. in Des Moines, died on Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at his home of congestive heart failure.

There will be no funeral services. Burial will be in Resthaven Mausoleum in Resthaven Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis National Society-Iowa Chapter.

Richard was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He had lived in Des Moines since 1949.

He was employed at Central States Theaters as a bookkeeper and retired in 1998.

He was a member of the Grandview Golf Club and Variety Club.

He was a supporter of DSM Bucs and Reader of Books.

He is survived by one brother, Dean Day and his wife, Jane, of Winterset; one sister, Deanna Davis and her husband, Tom, of Latimer; two daughters, Leanne Morgan and Christy Flournoy, both of California; six grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

MEYER - Ila Mary Winkels, 79, of Meyer, died on Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

LAKE MILLS - Oscar H. Harang, 78, of Lake Mills, formerly of Ackley, died on Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Salem Lutheran Church Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial will be at the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

DOROTHEA 'DORA' CHRISTIANS

GRAFTON - Dorothea "Dora" Christians, 99, of Grafton, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. Interment will follow at the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Dora Christians Memorial Fund, to be disbursed according to Dora's wishes.

Dora was born June 18, 1903 in Grafton, Iowa, a daughter of August and Ernstine (Duenow) Wagner. She grew up and received her education in the Grafton area.

She was baptized on July 12, 1903 and confirmed on April 1, 1917, both at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.

Dora was united in marriage to Harry W. Christians on Jan. 9, 1927, also at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Carl Landeck.

Harry, Dora, and her brother-in-law, Roy Christians, operated the Christian Brothers Store in Grafton for many years. Dora also worked as a postal clerk in Grafton while she was a full-time homemaker.

Dora was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the Mary Martha Circle.

Dora's thoughtfulness and kindness to others will be remembered.

Dora is survived by her son, Don Christians, of Mill Valley, Calif.; her daughter, Harriet Kuntz, of Mason City; two grandsons, Dave Kuntz and his wife, Terri, of Mason City and Brent Kuntz and his wife, Julie, of Grafton; five great-grandchildren, Cassie, Nicole, and Lindsay Kuntz, of Mason City and Tim and Jenna Kuntz, of Grafton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; a son-in-law, Kermit Kuntz; a daughter-in-law, Joan (Clay) Christians; three sisters, Lydia McCann, Minnie Christians, and Clara Bartz; and four brothers, Robert, Walter, Art, and Oscar Wagner.

GENE HABERKAMP

CEDAR FALLS - Gene Haberkamp was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Verner and Lydia (Becker) Haberkamp. He married Helen J. Haugen Aug. 1, 1948, in Lake Mills.

Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his B.A. from Drake University and was a music teacher in Huxley, Odebolt, Iowa Falls and Cedar Falls until 1971.

Gene was owner/operator of Donutland in Cedar Falls from June of 1971 until January of 1991 but then continued working for his daughter at Donutland until 2001. He died on Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at the age of 77 years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Linda (Stephen) Hurley and Connie (John) Liljegren, both of Cedar Falls and Lisa (Perry) Fails, of Watertown, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Harlan and Burke, both of Garner; and one sister, Mary Jo Eisenmann, of Madison, Wis.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Susan Myers and Nancy Jass.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, 1825 W. 12th St., Cedar Falls and for an hour preceding service time on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the church.

MARGARET ANN THORNBURY

MASON CITY - Margaret Ann Thornbury, 73 of 325 23rd St. S.W., died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A Memorial Luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the VFW Post 773, 1603 S. Monroe Ave. in Mason City.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

A private family burial will be held at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery.

Margaret was born Sept. 9, 1929 in Swaledale, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Nellie (Nielsen) McLaughlin. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Mason City.

Margaret Ann was united in marriage to Donald E. Thornbury on Feb. 14, 1975.

Margaret is survived by her children, daughter, Sandra Holt, of Mason City; daughter, Jackie Rye and husband, Bob, of Placerville, Calif.; son, Gary Thornbury, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Barb Meeker and husband, Ron, of Elkhart, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Mark, Ben, Traci, Missy, Kelly, Heather, Casey and Kayla; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Martin McLaughlin and wife, Marilyn, of Bellevue, Neb.; and one sister, Marlys Schroeder and husband, Ralph "Butch," of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; two brothers, Marvin McLaughlin and Merle McLaughlin; one sister, Mary Ellen Schmalowski; and her parents.

GERRIT J. BORN

SIOUX CENTER - Gerrit J. Born, 85, of Sioux Center, Iowa, died Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31, 2002) at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with Pastor Jan Neels officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the Born family requests memorials be made to the New Nursing Home Project.

Gerrit Jan Born was born to Abraham and Grietje (Van Hierden) Born on Jan. 13, 1917, in Ermelo, The Netherlands. Gerrit's mother died while giving birth to him, so he was raised by his maternal grandparents, the Van Hierdens. As a young man, Gerrit served in the armed forces in the Netherlands for a short time.

On March 16, 1944, he was united in marriage to Corrie Niemeyer in Oosterwolde, The Netherlands. Gerrit was working as a forest ranger when they married.

In 1949, Gerrit and Corrie immigrated to the United States. Shortly after their arrival they settled in Hull, Iowa, where Gerrit was employed by the City of Hull in various departments from 1953 to 1979. In 1989 Gerrit and Corrie made their home in nearby Sioux Center. They were fortunate to spend several winters in Arizona with friends.

Gerrit regularly attended the Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center. During the summer months he enjoyed fishing and loved spending time by the lake with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Corrie Born of Sioux Center; two sons and daughters-in-law, Abraham "Abe" and Linda Born, of Clear Lake, Iowa and Adrie "Dutch" and Shirley Born, of Sioux Center; three grandchildren, Brent Born and his wife, Mary, of Kenyon, Minn., Sheila De Jong and her husband, Kelly, of Sioux Center, Alan Born and his wife, Loran, of Pella; seven great-grandchildren, along with five half brothers in The Netherlands.

Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents; and two half brothers, Evert and Jonas Born.

RICHARD PATRICK MERGEN

AMES - Richard Patrick Mergen, 36, of Ames, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) at the home of his parents in Mountain Home, Ark.

He was born Aug. 5, 1966, in Algona to Gary and Victoria Mergen. He attended schools in Algona, Mason City and graduated from Ventura High School. He was also a graduate of MCC Community College in Marshalltown and a graduate of Iowa State University.

He is survived by his parents; his sister, Melinda Mergen, of St. Louis, Mo., and his maternal grandfather, Bernard Briggs, of Mountain Home, Ark.

His brother, Ryan Mergen; his paternal grandparents, Leo and Dorothy Mergen, of Algona; and his maternal grandmother, Henrietta Briggs, of Mountain Home, Ark., preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 2210 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa.

THELMA L. RIKANSRUD

MASON CITY - Thelma L. Rikansrud, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., formerly of 304 Third St. N.E., Apt. 608, died on Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, officiating. Committal will be at Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be made in Thelma's name to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thelma was born on Aug. 5, 1911, on a farm near Kanawha, the daughter of Ole and Hilda (Hanson) Rikansrud. She moved from the farm to Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1928 and Waldorf College in 1931.

She then moved to Mason City in 1971 along with her sister, Agnes, and had resided at the Good Shepherd Care Center since February of 2001.

She was a caretaker of her family, and spent much time with her sister, Agnes.

Those who knew Thelma will remember her caring heart and warm spirit. She enjoyed serving others.

Thelma was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond and a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

She is survived by her nephew, Rodney Forristall, of Bloomington, Minn.; her niece, Marguerite Ann Elliot, of Hot Springs, Ark.; great-niece, Julie Manning, of Denver, Colo.; three great-nephews, Mark Manning, of Sweden, James David Manning, of California, and Alex Elliot, of Vermont; special friends, Dick and Jane Gildner, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Hannah Forristall and Agnes Rikansrud; seven brothers, Thorleif, Harold, Sigurd, Hector, Hjalmer, Laurence, and Gaylen.

MABEL N. PIPPERT

MASON CITY - Mabel N. Pippert, 99, of the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002).

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. David Korth, officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Mabel N. Pippert Memorial Fund.

Mabel was born on Oct. 9, 1903, in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel D. Sandy and Eliza (Miller) Sandy. Mabel attended school in Brooklyn, Iowa, and came to the Nora Springs area in 1918 and was united in marriage to Calvin H. Pippert on Oct. 17, 1923, in Mason City.

Following their marriage, they moved to California for two years and then returned to the Mason City area in 1925 where they began farming and did so for over 40 years.

She was an active member of her congregation and of the Naomi Circle at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Mabel was a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross providing several volunteer services to her community.

She was also a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

Mabel was known for her wonderful cooking, always enjoyed baking cookies for her grandchildren. She will also be remembered for her wonderful garden that she meticulously tended to on their farm.

Mabel loved to share the Lord Jesus with everyone she met. She frequently ministered to the sick and dying through prayer and Bible readings.

Mabel always enjoyed the time she spent at the Odd Fellows Home, she has left behind many beloved friends and caretakers who loved and cared for her dearly.

Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Janice and husband, Howard Cook, of Zion, Ill.; one son-in-law, John Sally, of Bullhead, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Christopher Cook and wife, Sherrie, of Ingleside, Ill., Gregory Cook and wife, Debra, of Vina, Ala., and Patricia Nichols and husband, Michael, of Zion, Ill.; one great-grandson, Kyle Nichols; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, James Sandy, of California.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin; one daughter, Naomi; one brother, Glenn; and one sister, Florence.

ROWAN - Joann Martin, 69, of Rowan, died on Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at her home in rural Rowan.

BELMOND - Edythe W. Walrod, 84, of Belmond, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Belmond United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

IRMA FERN JENSON

MASON CITY - Irma Fern Jenson, 92, of 1308 S. Delaware Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with Major Chuck Wright of the Salvation Army officiating. Interment will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Irma was born March 17, 1910, the daughter of William and Annie (Quart) Schieffelbein, in Ryder, N.D.

In August of 1930, Irma was united in marriage to Elmer B. Jenson in Lake Mills. The couple moved from Lake Mills to Leland, then to Forest City, and in 1953 they moved to Mason City.

Irma was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Moose Lodge and the Salvation Army Church.

Irma was very handy with a needle and thread. She sewed mittens, her own clothes, crafty items and teddy bears. Irma looked forward to going fishing and taking a picnic lunch to share with her family.

She spent many hours working in her garden, tending to her tomatoes and corn. Irma also enjoyed going out for a night of dancing.

Those thankful for having shared in her life include her three children, Mae Long and her husband, Roger E., of Algona, Joan Carney and her husband, Richard, of Mason City, and William Jenson of Mason City; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jenson was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmer; one son, Jerry Jenson; three sisters; five brothers; and two great-grandchilden.

CLEAR LAKE - Walter E. Campney, 92, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 11 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake.

CARL C. LARSEN

FERTILE - Carl C. Larsen, 83, of Fertile, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with the Rev. Marlin Snyder and the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in North Prairie Cemetery near Scarville.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and an hour prior to services at the church.

Carl Christian Larsen was born on Dec. 24, 1919, to Lauritz and Annie (Olson) Larsen, in Felton, Minn. He grew up and received his education in Felton. He attended Waldorf College in Forest City and played in the college band.

On June 29, 1941, he was united in marriage with Alice Solomonson at North Prairie Lutheran Church.

Carl served with the 27th Photo Squadron during World War II and saw overseas duty in the British Isles. Carl played in a band called the "Lightnings," entertaining troops throughout England and France.

Following his honorable discharge, he spent seven years in Forest City working for Olson Furniture.

In 1953, the couple moved to Fertile where they made their home and Carl was part owner of a local hardware store. Carl and Alice founded Larsen Plumbing and Heating in 1958 where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He continued to work part time until 1995.

Carl was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church where he served on various committees and was chairperson for many years. He also served on the board of directors of Community State Bank in Clear Lake, was a member of the Clear Lake VFW and a charter member of Fertile Lions Club. Carl served many years with the Fertile and Forest City Community School districts.

In his spare time, Carl enjoyed camping, fishing and building model airplanes with his grandsons.

Carl passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills where he had lived for two and a half years, suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Carl is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice; a daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Dennis Faber, of Fertile; three grandsons, Tim Faber and his wife, Brooke, of Fort Meyers, Fla., Tom Faber of Rochester, Minn., and Edward Faber of Fertile; two sisters, Josephine Larsen and Lorraine Diederichs of Minneapolis; three brothers, John (Betty) Larsen of Fargo, N.D., Harold Larsen of Moorehead, Minn., and Kenneth (Lois) Larsen, of Sarasota, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Bob Chesley of Brunswick, Maine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Carl will be sadly missed by friends and family.

JEFFREY C. SOMMER

FOREST CITY - Jeffrey C. "Lefty" Sommer, 33, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident near Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Jeffrey C. Sommer was born in Iowa City on Aug. 19, 1969, the son of Carl and Ora Mae (Fagner) Sommer. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Jeff spent his early years in Cresco, moving with his family to Forest City in 1974. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1988 and continued his education at the Lincoln Technical School in Des Moines, graduating as one of the top 10 students in his class.

He made his home in Forest City and for the last 13 years has worked at Skarlis Olds Honda Motor Company in Mason City.

Lefty liked to go fishing, loved playing cards with his friends and was an excellent cook. He enjoyed watching football and NASCAR races on TV.

He treasured time together with his nephews, Justin and Zack, and spent hours hanging out with his friends, working on cars.

Jeff is survived by his mother, Ora Mae Sommer, of Forest City; and his sister, June Fretheim and her husband, Wes, and their sons, Justin and Zack, all of Decorah. He also is survived by three uncles, Harold Sommer and wife, Mary, of Arcadia, Fla., Alvin Sommer of Cresco and Marvin Sommer of Granger; two aunts, Charlene Knutson of Cresco and Norrine McKinstry of Rapids City, S.D.; and several cousins.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Carl Sommer; his grandparents; several uncles and an aunt.

JOANN J. MARTIN

ROWAN - Joann J. Martin, 69, of Rowan, passed away on Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at her home in rural Rowan.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the United Church of Rowan in Rowan with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery, rural Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S., in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Joann Junice Boelkes was born on Sept. 27, 1933, in Franklin County, Iowa, to parents Hilko and Lena (Meyers) Boelkes. She attended country school in Franklin County and later attended and graduated from Hansell High School in Hansell.

Following graduation, Joann worked a variety of jobs, which included working for the Hensel Produce Company in Alexander, for Harris Cookbooks in Iowa Falls and for Hawk Golf Bags in Clarion.

On March 18, 1956, Joann was united in marriage with Garold Martin in New York. The couple initially made their home farming near Hampton and later near Sheffield before settling on an acreage south of Alexander where they lived for 20 years. In 1983, Joann and Garold moved to Garold's home place near Rowan where they had lived ever since.

Joann was a devoted homemaker and farmer's wife; she loved to tend to her family, friends and flowers. During her spare time, Joann enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards and especially gardening. She was a member of the United Church of Rowan where she participated in quilting every Monday afternoon and where she had been the church board secretary for some time. Joann was also a member of the Blaine Friendship Club in Dows.

Survivors include her daughter, Rachelle Thompson and her husband, Tom, of Hampton: her son, Richard Martin and his wife, Kathy, of Livermore; two grandchildren, Joshua Martin and Alexander Thompson; five stepgrandchildren, Christine, Judy, Tracy, Jami, and Kyle; six stepgreat-grandchildren, Kevin, Kyle, Casey, Katlin, Heidi and Jacob; sisters, Jeanette Nuehring of Mason City, Helen Brandt of Bradford, Iowa, Irene Boelkes of Eagle Grove and Edna Wright and her husband, George, of Hampton; brothers, Joe Boelkes of Hampton and Walter Boelkes of Jefferson City, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garold, in 1997; a daughter, Debbie Dee Martin; and two brothers, Ernest and Herman Boelkes.

Edythe Winifred (Greenwood) Walrod was born on Feb. 20, 1918, at Belmond, the daughter of Thomas A. and Lida E. (Preston) Greenwood. She graduated from high school in Belmond. Following her graduation, she had various jobs in Belmond such as working in a restaurant and keeping house for other people.

On April 6, 1942, Edythe was united in marriage with Charles H. Walrod at Chillicothe, Mo. Charles made a career in the United States Navy, so the family moved all over the country. During that time, Edythe was a homemaker, taking care of her family and her home. Family was of utmost importance to Edythe and she made sure every holiday was spent together.

In 1957, the family moved back to Belmond, where Edythe helped her husband at their store, Walrod's Gun Shop.

After Charles' death in 1965, Edythe began working as a cook at the Belmond High School. She continued that work for 18 years until she retired in 1984.

Edythe was a lifelong member of the Belmond United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading and crocheting and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Schlichting and her husband, Wayne, of Britt; a son, Gary Walrod and his wife, Donna, of Belmond; six grandchildren, Steven Schlichting and his wife, Laura, of Britt, Tracy Reynolds and her husband, Darrin, of Kanawha, Angela Steffen and her husband, Brett, of Cedar Rapids, Gina Schlichting of Klemme, Chris Walrod of Belmond, and Brad Schlichting and his fiancée, Dawn Nord, of Britt; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Jessica, Randi, Jamie and Dallas; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; two sisters, Thelma and Evelyn Greenwood; and three brothers, Lawrence, Thomas Jr. and Robert Greenwood.

ELIZABETH A. ROBINSON

MARSHALL, Mo. - Elizabeth A. Robinson, 60, formerly of Forest City, Iowa, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at Fitzgibbon Hospital, Marshall, Mo.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. George Kalb officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Forest City and one hour prior to the services at the church Tuesday.

Elizabeth Ann Robinson, the daughter of Merrill and Dorothy (Isaacs) Haug, was born May 5, 1942, in Cook County, Ill. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Thompson. She graduated from Thompson High School in 1960, attended Waldorf College in Forest City, and was a 1994 graduate of Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

She was married to Eldon Thompson and to this union was born a daughter, Charlene.

On June 11, 1983, Elizabeth was married to Ronald Robinson at the United Methodist Church in Thompson. They resided in Forest City until 2000 when they moved to Houstonia, Mo., and later Marshall, Mo.

She was a devoted mother and homemaker who loved to collect recipes and cookbooks and make scrapbooks. Liz was also a caring and giving person; she continued that in death through the gift of organ and tissue donation. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and word and number fill-in puzzles.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Forest City and attended a small country church in Missouri, Bethel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Ron; a daughter, Charlene and her husband, Jim Stienstra, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and their two children, Christopher and Laura; a sister, Jane Hagen of Fargo, N.D.; two nieces, Amy and Loren; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.

GARNER - Shirlene F. Young, 65, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a Rosary Society rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of arrangements.

Shirlene Faye Young, the daughter of Clarence and Albena (Hestad) Hestness was born Feb. 17, 1937, at Lake Mills. She attended school in Lake Mills, graduating in 1955.

On Aug. 16, 1955, she was married to Francis Young at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Forest City. They lived in several towns in Minnesota for six years and then moved to Garner where they raised their family.

In the early 1980s, Shirlene and Francis owned and operated the A & W Drive-In in Garner. Shirlene also worked for the Garner-Hayfield School system in the lunch program. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and friends. She also enjoyed baking and traveling.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Homemaker's Club, Red Hats Society and was an active fund-raiser for the Hancock County Relay for Life.

She is survived by her husband, Francis Young of Garner; four children, Daniel Young of West Des Moines, Leslie Tighe and her husband, Richard, of Las Vegas, Nev., Jean Klumpp and her husband, Michael, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Carole Haan and her husband, Bryan, of Biloxi, Miss.; nine grandchildren, Abigail Tighe, Kathryn Tighe, Emily Tighe, John Klumpp, Kyle Klumpp, AnneMarie Klumpp, Elisabeth Klumpp, Allison Haan and Jacob Haan; siblings, Elwood Hestness and his wife, Valta, of Albert Lea, Minn., Vivian Brudvig of Scarville, Adrian Hestness and his wife, Yvonne, of Albert Lea, Minn., Jerry Hestness and his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City, and Gene Hestness and his wife, Marie, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Gladys Hestness of Rosemount, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
