 ORLA MAE POTTER

OSAGE - Orla Mae Potter, 73, of Osage, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Jerry Newland officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, and also an hour before services on Friday at the funeral home.

GERALD A. CALVERT

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Gerald A. "Jerry" Calvert, 57, of Brunswick, Ga., died Monday (April 26, 1999) at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, 1999, at Buckingham Place Church of God, with burial at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He retired from the United States Navy in 1979 as a chief electronics technician with 20 years of service. He was also associated with Sossner Tap and Tool in Brunswick for 10 years.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Manning of Nora Springs; three brothers, Ronald and his wife, Judy, of Nora Springs, Richard and his wife, Sue, of Mason City, and John and his wife, Sandy, of Mason City; and also eight nephews and five nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Blanche Calvert.

KELSI MAE PATTERSON

OSAGE - Kelsi Mae Patterson, 9, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, with the Rev. Daniel Wee and the Rev. Dr. David Palm officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.

Kelsi Mae Patterson (Squirt) was born on March 18, 1990, in Osage. She was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, on April 22, 1990. Kelsi was born with cardiomyopathy, and at the age of six, received a heart transplant through the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She attended St. Ansgar Elementary School, and attended Sunday school at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Kelsi's favorite pastime was playing with and caring for her many pets, and talking on the phone and taking bubble baths. Kelsi's strong will and tender smile touched many hearts.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Max Patterson.

Kelsi is survived by her parents, Mike and Lisa Patterson of Osage; two brothers, Jeremy and Dustin of Osage; one sister, Mandy, of Osage; maternal grandparents, Ethel and David Lenz of St. Ansgar, and Lee and Donna Buchda of Fox Lake, Wis.; and paternal grandmother, Mildred Patterson, of St. Ansgar; and many aunts and uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Chapel of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

GRACE L. NETTLETON

GREENE - A funeral Mass for Grace L. Nettleton, 82, of 309 South West St., Greene, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Grace Lenore Anastasia Fleener was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Stewartville, Olmsted County, Minn., a daughter of Clair and Ruby (Boget) Fleener. She died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She received her education and graduated from the Searsboro High School in 1934. In April 1936, she was united in marriage to Charles Hoyt Wildman at Lynville. They lived in the Lynville-Searsboro areas, later moving to Kellogg. In 1950, they moved to a farm in the New Sharon area. On Aug. 1, 1955, a traffic accident claimed the life of Hoyt Wildman and his daughter, Judy Diane.

Shortly thereafter, Grace moved to Greene, where she was employed at the Wildman Cafe. On Jan. 23, 1960, she was united in marriage to James R. Nettleton at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They made their home in Greene, where she assisted Jim in his dairy cattle business, traveling to sales throughout Iowa and Minnesota.

Grace always had an interest in athletics, having played basketball and softball during high school, and as an adult enjoyed watching those sports on television. She was a Minnesota Viking fan. The greatest joy of her life was her grandchildren, and having them come and visit her.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and a member of St. Jude's Circle.

Living family members include her husband, Jim Nettleton, of Greene; two daughters and their spouses, Joan and Joe Cochran of Suisun, Calif., and Jean and Fred Nordmeyer of Greene; four grandchildren and their spouses, Mitch and Marge Nordmeyer, Neal and Jacque Nordmeyer, Stacy Morris, and Susan Morris; four step-grandchildren and their spouses, Susan Nordmeyer, Sally and George Dixon, Sheri and Everett Collins, and Michael and Sue Cochran; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters and their spouses, Gail Wildman of Reinbeck, Audrey and Mel Dudolski of Reinbeck, and Louise and Cal Taylor of Marshalltown; and one brother, Earl and his wife, Ann Fleener, of Grundy Center.

She was preceded in death by her first husband and daughter, and two brothers, Craig and Lyle Fleener.

MARGARET E. WHITE

MASON CITY - Margaret E. White, 86, of 1531 Sixth Pl. S.E., Mason City, died Monday (May 3, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Murdock Funeral Home in Marion. Officiating will be the Rev. Sylvia Kennedy, assisted by the Rev. Jack Kendall of the United Methodist Church in Alburnett. Inurnment will be at Lafayette Cemetery in Lafayette.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Murdock Funeral Home. Local arrangements were conducted by Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the grounds and maintenance fund of the Lafayette Cemetery.

Margaret was born on Jan. 23, 1913, one of eight children of John H. and Retta B. (Rosinbum) Lindsay, at Creighton, Neb. She spent her childhood in that area and graduated from the Creighton High School. She was united in marriage to W.H. "Whitey" White on July 14, 1938, at Brewster, Minn. To this union was born two daughters. In 1948, they moved to Alburnett, and then in 1985, to Marion. Following her husband's death in February of 1990, she moved to Mason City in 1996. For 13 years she was employed in sales and layaway for J.C. Penney in Cedar Rapids, and then the following nine years she worked in the Recorder's Office of the Linn County Courthouse, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Alburnett United Methodist Church and the Ladies Golf Societies at Squaw Creek, St. Andrews, and Ellis golf courses. She was a faithful volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital, and enjoyed the El Kahir Widows Club. She loved to dine out with her friends, was an enthusiastic Hawkeye fan, and spent time playing cards and board games with her family and friends.

Those thankful in sharing Margaret's life include her two daughters, Joan D. and her husband, Tom Good, Mason City, and Jolene W. and her husband, Ken Arends, Naperville, Ill; four grandchildren, Lawana and her husband, Paul Rothamel, Lanee Good, Shari Arends, and Douglas and his wife, Rachelle Arends; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Laurel Rothamel; and many nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters and three brothers.

GREENE - Lorrayne Botterbrodt, 78, of Greene, died Wednesday (May 5, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene.

MARGARETHA E. MEYER

ALGONA - Margaretha E. Meyer, 88, of Algona, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THELMA BROWN

KANAWHA - Thelma Brown, 92, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home, Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha.

CECIL GRAEBER

KANAWHA - Cecil Graeber, 90, died Wednesday (May 5, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha, with Kanawha American Legion Post Chaplain William Dahl officiating. Burial will take place at Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha, with military graveside services conducted by the Kanawha American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

MARGARET ANN 'MAGGIE' MARSH

MASON CITY - Margaret Ann (Maggie) Marsh of Mason City died Sunday (May 2, 1999) in Baltimore, Md. She was 53.

Wife, mother and precious "Mena" to her grandchildren, Maggie was a generous, loving and kind person. Many will remember her caring and nurturing spirit, and her strong Christian faith. Maggie was a creative person who took special pleasure in selecting the perfect gift for family and friends. She was an enthusiastic gourmet cook who enjoyed sampling the cuisine in the many countries she and her family visited. In recent years, Maggie's greatest delight was her two grandchildren, Ellie and Timmy Ray, to whom she was devoted.

Maggie was born Nov. 27, 1945, in Mason City, to Ethel and Howard Gage. She attended Mason City Junior College and the University of Northern Iowa. She was a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

On Aug. 21, 1966, Maggie and Dennis Marsh were married; their twin daughters, Mindy and Molly, were born one year later. She and her family traveled overseas, living in Japan, Germany and England. Maggie and Dennis were currently residing in Kitzingen, Germany, though they also maintained a residence in Mason City.

Maggie will be missed by her husband, Dennis; her daughters, Melinda (Mindy) and her husband, Dan Ray, of Annapolis, Md., and Monica (Molly) Marsh of Washington, D.C.; her parents, Howard and Ethel Gage of Mason City; one sister, Ada Grosland and her husband, Ron, of Austin, Minn.; two brothers, Jim Gage and wife, Kathy, of Juneau, Alaska, and Pete Gage of Louisville, Colo.; two grandchildren, Ellen and Timothy Ray of Annapolis, Md.; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Norem officiating. Burial will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be sent in Margaret Marsh's name to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City.

REV. OSCAR LAAVEG

BELMOND - Rev. Oscar Laaveg, 83, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Jim Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to Trinity Lutheran Church-Emmaus House, in Belmond.

Rev. Oscar Laaveg, the son of Martin and Anna (Henie) Laaveg, was born on Dec. 4, 1915, in Vernon Township, N.D. He attended and graduated from the Park River, N.D. schools. Oscar played football for one year at North Dakota State University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940, at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.

He married Viola M. Larson on Sept. 11, 1943. In 1944, after receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., they began their ministry together. Prior to his ordination on June 25, 1944, Oscar served a year of seminary internship in Sandpoint, Idaho. He served a three-point parish in Kindred, N.D., from 1944 until 1948.

In 1948, the Laavegs received a call to the Augustana Academy in Canton, S.D., and to serve the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. In 1949, they moved to Rapid City, S.D., to begin a home mission congregation until 1953. Helmar Lutheran Church of rural Newark, Ill., was served from 1953 until 1957.

In 1957, Oscar accepted a call to a two-point parish in Camrose, Alberta, Canada, until 1960. The Laavegs moved to Belmond, to serve Trinity and St. Olaf Lutheran Churches, from 1960 to 1970. St. John Lutheran Church of rural Cylinder, extended a call to him in 1970. They served this country parish until 1978, when they moved to Fertile. In Fertile, they served a two-point parish of Fertile Lutheran and Pilot Knob Lutheran Churches. The couple officially retired in 1982.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Viola, of Belmond; sons, Dr. Sterling Laaveg and his wife, Rita, of Mason City, Paul Laaveg of Leesburg, Va., Joel Laaveg and his wife, Gina, of Clear Lake, and Pastor Lee Laaveg and his wife, Denise, of Forest City; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Nicole and Lisa Laaveg, Jacob Laaveg, Philip and Daniel Laaveg, and Jessica, Andrea, Heather and Luke Laaveg; brother, Joe Laaveg and his wife, Helen, of Park River, N.D.; sister-in-law, Josephine Laaveg of Park River, N.D.; and brother-in-law, Dr. Jack McCaffrey of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Willie Laaveg; and a sister, Linnea McCaffrey.

FRANCES EVELYN OLSON

NORTHWOOD - Frances Evelyn Olson, 88, of Northwood, died Tuesday (May 4, 1999) at the Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call from noon until service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Frances Evelyn Olson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in Northwood in her name.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Evelyn Olson was born on Jan. 7, 1911, in Dodge Center, Minn., the daughter of Simon and Bessie (Campbell) Schuster. She attended and received her education in the Dodge Center school system, graduating from Dodge Center High School. She was united in marriage to Harold Olson on June 1, 1932, in Dodge Center. He preceded her in death in August, 1984. After their marriage they lived in Dodge Center, where they farmed and owned and operated a restaurant until 1940, when they moved to Austin, Minn., where she worked at Hormel until her retirement, moving to Northwood in 1974.

She enjoyed knitting and traveling, but her great love and enjoyment was her grandchildren and watching them participate in their sports activities.

Frances had been a resident of the Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center since October 1998.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood, and the church circle.

Left to cherish her memory is a son, Jerry Olson and his wife, Suzanne, of Northwood; four grandchildren, Kym Thorson and her husband, John, of Deltona, Fla., Kory Olson and his wife, Sherry, of Manly, Kari Redman and her husband, Ben, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kristy Lilly and her husband, Charles, of Lathionia, Ga.; 10 great-grandchildren, Kirsten Thorson, Scott Thorson, Bryan Koster, Jayson Olson, Shayne Olson, McKenzie Redman, Casey Redman, Chaz Lilly, Garett Lilly and Carter Lilly; three sisters, Lavonne Day and her husband, Ladd, of Los Osos, Calif., Virginia Keller of Mantorville, Minn., and Leona Osborn of Waseca, Minn.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, Harold, she was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Lyle Schuster and Hilton Schuster, and two brothers-in-law, Wilbur Keller and Ross Osborn.

LORRAYNE L. BOTTERBRODT

GREENE - Funeral services for Lorrayne L. Botterbrodt, 78, of 309 N. Main, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Lorrayne Lois Fox was born Aug. 10, 1920, in rural Aredale, Butler County, a daughter of Edward H. and Hazel I. (Pencook) Fox, and died Wednesday (May 5, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She received her education in the Bristow public schools, graduating in 1937. On Feb. 14, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ernest Botterbrodt at St. Peter Lutheran Parsonage in Greene. They farmed near Marble Rock until 1944 when they moved west of Greene. They remained there until 1951, when they began farming east of Greene. Following their retirement they moved into Greene. Ernest died March 2, 1986. She continued to make her home in Greene until entering the Liebe Care Center.

Lorrayne will be remembered as an excellent cook and her collections of cook books, spoons and other things. She enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting and gardening. She was baptized Dec. 19, 1920, at the Grace Evangelical Church in Aredale and was confirmed as a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on March 22, 1940, where she was active in various church circles throughout the years.

Living family members include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Botterbrodt, of Tuscola, Texas; four grandchildren and their spouses, Daniel and Rhonda Botterbrodt, David and Tracy Botterbrodt, Debra and Michael Belch, Dianna and Joel Tobey; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron Fox of Allison and Orville Fox of Waverly.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Wilma Truax; two brothers, Don Fox and Walter Fox.

CECIL FREDRICK GRAEBER

KANAWHA - Cecil Fredrick Graeber, 90, passed away Wednesday (May 5, 1999) at Belmond Community Hospital in Belmond.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha, with Kanawha American Legion Post Chaplain William Dahl officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Kanawha American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha, and will resume one hour prior to services Saturday.

Cecil, the son of Fredrick Wilson and Alice Gertrude Long Graeber, was born Feb. 15, 1909, in Kentland, Ind. He attended Kanawha schools and graduated from Kanawha High School.

After high school, Cecil moved to Illinois, where he attended trade school on tool and dye making. Cecil worked for Wyman and Gordon in Harvey, Ill., for a time.

In 1943 Cecil entered the Navy and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. His service to his country was very important to him. Following his discharge, he returned to Harvey, Ill., and worked for Wyman and Gordon. He later lived for a time in Homewood, Ill. Cecil returned to Kanawha following his retirement at age 65.

Cecil loved to bowl, play cards and go fishing. He was a member of the Kanawha American Legion Severson Post No. 77.

Cecil is survived by one son, James, of Cook, Minn.; one granddaughter, Jade and Scott Hansen of Wausau, Wis.; four great-grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler, Nicholas and Alex; special friends, Barbara Ansel and her husband, Ray, of Kanawha; and numerous other friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

DALE R. SQUIER

OSAGE - Dale R. Squier, 69, formerly of Osage, passed away Tuesday evening (May 4, 1999) at his home in McLoud, Okla.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 10, at the First United Methodist Church, 819 Main, Osage, with the Rev. Art Hill officiating. There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

Dale was born on Dec. 3, 1929, in Orchard, to Roy and Maude Squier. He attended and graduated from school in Osage. He briefly farmed in the Orchard area. He then drove semis for various trucking companies. He moved to Oklahoma in 1975 and worked as a truck driver for Transeon Truck Lines and retired in 1987.

Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Squier and her husband, Ted, of Newallo, Okla.; three sons, Gordon Squier and his wife, Marion, of Paulsbo, Wash., Allen Squier and his wife, Marie, of Rochester, Minn., and Wayne Squier, of Thornton; four grandchildren, Michele (Squier) Smuck and her husband, Matt, of Thornton, Larry Grant of Bothell, Wash., Marsha Craig of Everett, Wash., and Shelby Berry of Newallo, Okla.; five great-grandchildren, Derek and Andrew Smuck, of Thornton, and Daniel, Joseph and Nicholas Craig, of Everett, Wash.; two brothers, Paul Squier, of Osage, and Floyd Squier, of Vinton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

ELMER "BUCK" HEDRICK

NORA SPRINGS - Elmer "Buck" Hedrick, 67, of 1091 130th St., died Thursday (May 6, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. SE, Mason City. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Elmer Hedrick Memorial Fund.

Elmer was born Jan. 3, 1932, the son of James and Letha (Jump) Hedrick, in Mason City. On Jan. 20, 1950, Elmer was inducted into the United States Air Force. During his tour with the 6200th Food Service Squadron, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He served his country until his honorable discharge on Feb. 10, 1954.

On Aug. 6, 1960, Elmer was united in marriage to Faye Miller in New Richland, Minn.

He was employed at Mason City Iron and Metal until he retired in 1991.

Elmer was member of the Moose Lodge No. 1328 and a life member of the San Juan-Marne VFW Post No. 733. He was also in the pool league for many years here in Mason City. Elmer could be found working outside, repairing and tinkering on different things, tending to the numerous animals he raised or enjoying his grandchildren.

Phyllis was born in rural Nora Springs on July 23, 1930, daughter of Dorothy Theadora Kozak. She attended Riceville rural schools and, when the family moved to Illinois, attended Dixon, Ill. schools. She graduated from Amboy Township High School in 1949. Theodore and Katherine Kozak raised Phyllis after her mother died.

She was united in marriage to Wolodymyr Walter Pastushyn on June 15, 1954, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Chicago. She was a homemaker. To her friends and family, she was lovingly known as "Aunt Phyllis."

She is survived by two uncles, John Kozak and his wife, Betty, of Riceville, and Boris Kozak of Northfield, Minn.; one aunt, Helen Huiesman and her husband, Howard, of Gainesville, Fla.; and a special cousin, Rex Kozak and his wife, Bonnie, of Klemme; and many other cousins.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and her grandparents.

STRATFORD - The Rev. Thomas P. Hungerford, 53, of 824 Teneyck, Stratford, passed away on Wednesday morning (May 5, 1999) at his home due to cancer of the brain.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1945, in Melbourne, Fla., the son of Thomas W. and Norma Maria (Olson) Hungerford.

Pastor Hungerford was a 1963 graduate of Hinsdale High School in Hinsdale, Ill. In 1968, he received his B.A. in Ancient and Medieval History from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. He received his Masters in NDEA Fellowship in Ancient History.

In 1969 he joined the United States Navy and was stationed with the Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy, until his discharge in 1974.

From 1982 to 1987, he studied at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. He was ordained into the Lutheran Church of America in June of 1987 and was installed as pastor at St. John's in rural Hampton. He was currently serving as pastor of the Stratford Lutheran Church in Stratford, where he was installed in June of 1993.

He was a member of the Stratford Lutheran Church, American Legion Fredrick Sonksen Post No. 576 of Stratford, American Farm Bureau, and Smithsonian Institution and the Archaeological Institute of America.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Doris and Elmer Olson; and one grand-aunt, Ebba Olivia Olson Newell of Chicago.

Survivors include his mother, Norma Rich, of Burr Ridge, Ill.; one sister, Susan Lonardi and her husband, Augustus, of Le Grange, Ill.; four nephews, Jason, Adam, Joshua and Noah Lonardi, all of Le Grange, Ill.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stratford Lutheran Church in Stratford, with Bishop Curtis Miller, Pastors John Grebner, Lowell Halverson, Bruce Johnston and David Abram officiating.

The family of Genevieve "Jay" Ilene Barclay has requested that memorial contributions be made to Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, in her memory.

Genevieve "Jay" Ilene Barclay was born on Dec. 25, 1915, in her parents' home in Manly, the daughter of William H. and Ida Marie (Trebilcock) Chapman. She attended and received her education in the Manly school system, graduating from Manly High School in 1934.

She was united in marriage to Paul D. Barclay on June 20, 1937, in Mason City, and they were married for 26 years.

Jay was well known as Manly's local Avon Lady. She sent in her first Avon order on July 7, 1965, and continued selling Avon products throughout her cancer treatments and until her death. During those 34 years of sales, she missed only two orders.

Since 1967, she was a "second mother" to several North Central Community School teachers as she primarily rented out her three apartments to teachers. She also organized the Manly Rhythm Band at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center, which played for the residents.

She enjoyed people, giving gifts, music, singing, laughing, and giving of herself to others.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Church Alter Guild, and the church circle, all in Manly.

Left to cherish Jay's memory are several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 1918; her father in 1961; her husband in 1967; three brothers, Olwyn, Harley, and Ivan Chapman; and two sisters, Zelda Loomer and Zona Chapman who died in infancy.

Rueben is survived by a special friend, Letha Carver, of Mason City; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

James married Charlotte Fraley on July 7, 1933, in Eldora. They lived on the family farm until 1973, when they moved into Clear Lake to live. He enjoyed farming with his father and during the later years with his son, David.

After he retired, he enjoyed studying the stock market and investing. He enjoyed watching his sons in sporting events. He focused his whole life on his family and the farm.

James is survived by two sons, William David Hansen and his wife, Patricia, Clear Lake, and Phillip Russell Hansen and his wife, Deborah, Collins; two grandchildren, Dawn Renee Ehrhart and her husband, John, of Huntington, N.Y., and Michael Eric Hansen of Minneapolis; a sister, Erna Bevington, Des Moines; and a first cousin, Fern Boyle, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Charlotte, on June 14, 1996.

Wava J. Woodward was born Jan. 31, 1908, the daughter of John Horton and Grace G. (Lumley) Woodward, in Mason City. As a young lady, Wava attended the Mason City public schools and later graduated in the class of 1927. Following high school, she furthered her education at the Hamilton Business College.

After her educational experiences, Wava was employed at Barrett Brothers Grocery and later by the Horse Shoe Grocery store. After living in Mason City for several years, Wava moved to Algona and then to Boone. While living in Boone, she found a job with the Boone Community School District in the hot lunch program. She worked there until her retirement in 1974, at which time she moved back to Mason City.

Wava was very talented as a seamstress and loved cooking and baking; she was known as a "Domestic Engineer." She was always ready for a fine and elegant dinner. Wava enjoyed working outside in her flower garden tending to her bulb plants, also known as "bulbing" to her family. She looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved to travel while she was still able and later held those memories close to her heart. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and involved in one of the church circles, Secret Pals Club, the Class of 1927 Alumni Association, and a member of Eastern Star.

Robert Dean Jacobs, the son of Ernest and Leona (Arp), was born on July 15, 1949, in Marshalltown. He was raised in the Staceyville area, and he attended and graduated from Osage High School.

In January 1968, Bob entered the United States Navy and served his country as an engineman during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in January 1974.

Bob married Darla Counsel in 1974, and the couple moved to Belmond. They had two daughters, Christina and Crystal. He worked at Helland & Long, an International Harvester Implement Dealer, as a partsman and worked in equipment sales.

Survivors include two daughters, Christina Noah and her husband, Jeremy, of Kanawha, and Crystal Jacobs of Belmond; two brothers, Binford Fredricksen and his wife, Fern, of Vancouver, Wash., and Rodney Jacobs and his wife, Julie, of Minneapolis; and a niece and a nephew, Amanda Jacobs and Rodney Jacobs Jr, both of Minneapolis.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David.

JUEN ARLENE ANDERSON

BELMOND - Juen Arlene Anderson, 77, passed away Friday (May 7, 1999) at her home in Belmond, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will be at St. Olaf Church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Juen, the daughter of Nels and Clara Ersland Rasmussen, was born July 11, 1921, in Humboldt County. She grew up in the Humboldt area, where she attended country school and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1939.

Juen was untied in marriage to Everett Anderson on Dec. 23, 1939, in Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in various communities in northern Iowa before moving to the St. Olaf area in 1946. They later moved to their present home in Belmond, where they have lived for the past 29 years.

Following normal training, Juen taught in Belmond Country School No. 5, which was the last country school in the area. Juen was later employed by Tomco Seeds as a secretary. She then worked in accounting at the USS Agri Chemical Company in Belmond for 21 years.

Juen was an avid sports fan and faithful follower of the local teams. She was active in the local Boy Scouts organization. Juen and Everett were avid campers and have camped in 49 of the 50 states. She enjoyed bowling, was a woodcarver and a great bread baker. Juen enjoyed many types of needlework and lovingly stitched a set of hardanger paraments for the St. Olaf Church.

Juen was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, serving in such capacities as Sunday school teacher, choir member, church treasurer, education board member, and ALCW. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 53 years.

Juen is survived by her husband, Everett; daughter, Dixie Miller and her husband, William, of Belmond; three sons, Edward and his wife, Sharon, of Lubbock, Texas, Dennis and his wife, Linda, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Douglas and his wife, Laurie, of Nevada, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Henry Rasmussen and his wife, Mariam, of Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Kate; two children in infancy; one grandson; one sister; and four brothers.

JEFF VIRGIL DUREGGER

CLEAR LAKE - Jeff Virgil Duregger, 25, of 802 S. Ninth St., died Friday (May 7, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Paul Hazel of Ventura United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and will resume from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home Monday.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the Jeff Virgil Duregger Memorial Fund.

Jeff was born Dec. 3, 1973, in Forest City, the son of Dennis and Sharon (Newell) Duregger. He attended school in Mason City and obtained his GED in 1992. He received a scholarship from North Iowa Area Community College. He attended NIACC from 1993-94.

Jeff was employed as a fork-lift driver. He enjoyed listening to country music, reading and had a gift for writing.

Jeff is survived by his father Dennis Duregger, Clear Lake; his mother, Sharon Newell, Clear Lake; a sister, Rene' Duregger, Iowa City; one brother, Conrad Woodiwiss and his wife, Vicki, Oklahoma City, Okla.; paternal grandmother, Fannie Duregger, Clear Lake; maternal grandparents, Roberta and Dale Newell, El Reno, Okla.; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Albert Duregger, and his aunt, Carol Duregger.

ARTHUR L. JEWELL

GOLDFIELD - Arthur L. Jewell, 80, died Friday (May 7, 1999) at USA Health Care of Fort Dodge after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Goldfield, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield, with military rites by the American Legion Post No. 370, Goldfield.

Visitation with the family present will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.

Arthur Le Roy Jewell was born on Jan. 25, 1919, in Norfolk, Neb., to Merrill and May (Schoonover) Jewell. He graduated from Concord High School, Concord, Neb., in 1938.

Arthur served his country during World War II in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946.

He was united in marriage with Ila B. Harder on Dec. 13, 1942, at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Omaha, Neb. The couple lived in the Thor-Hardy area for six years before moving to the Goldfield area, where they farmed for 36 years. They moved into Goldfield in 1982. Ila preceded Arthur in death on Nov. 8, 1986.

Arthur was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goldfield, where he was very active serving in offices and as an usher. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post No. 370, Goldfield, serving in various offices and as Commander. Arthur was a former member of the Wright County Farm Bureau.

Arthur is survived by his son, James Jewell and his wife, Kathy, of Goldfield; two daughters, Nancy Willett and her husband, Gary, of Fort Dodge, and Donna Wentworth-Jewell of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Vic Jewell, Mark Jewell, Patricia Hardcastle, Kirk Willett, Brett Willett, Brook Wentworth, Amanda Wentworth and Derek Wentworth; four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Madison and Paige Jewell and Aaron Hardcastle; and two sisters, Helen Peterson of Humboldt and Beverly Bayne of Meadow Grove, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ila, three brothers, Clyde, Garold and Max; and an infant grandson, Mark Willett.

ALLISON - George King, 89, died Friday (May 7, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

CLARENCE G. OLSON

MASON CITY - Clarence G. Olson, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday (May 5, 1999) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. James B. Norem officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Clarence G. Olson was born Dec. 30, 1907, the son of Elmer B. and Hannah (Johnson) Olson in Manly. Clarence moved with his family to Osseo, Wis., and attended school there. He then returned to Manly in 1929.

Clarence married Alice M. Grefe on June 21, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Clarence drove a bus for Jefferson Transportation for 30 years, retiring in 1971.

Clarence was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served in various capacities and also was a member of the Sons of Norway. Clarence was one of the original group that helped start Community Kitchen, and he continued to be active after it was started. Clarence also belonged to the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed woodworking, making crafts and having coffee with his friends.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Olson and his wife, Dolores, Mason City, and Roger Olson and his wife, Shirley, Pella; a daughter-in-law, LaVonn "Bonnie" Olson, Mason City; a son-in-law, Harold Ditch and his wife, Lois, Mason City; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Howard Olson, Seattle, Wash., James Olson and his wife, Tillie, Horseshoe Bend, Ark., and Alvin Olson and his wife, Lela, Brooklyn.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice in 1998; a daughter, Alice A. Ditch in 1994; a son, Clarence J. Olson in 1995; and three brothers, Oscar, Maynard and Kenneth Olson.

THORNTON- Esther Springer, 101, died Friday (May 7, 1999) at Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, at Thornton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Thornton United Methodist Church, Thornton.

Esther was born Nov. 16, 1897, in Franklin County on a farm near Latimer, to Dietrich and Anna Margaret "Menning" Grabbe. She was baptized and confirmed at the Marion Center Evangelical and Reformed Church.

On Feb. 11, 1924, she married Ralph Springer of rural Hampton. They were the parents of twin sons, Delane and Duane.

They farmed in the Hampton and Sheffield area until moving to a farm near Thornton in 1935. In 1962 they retired and moved into a home in Thornton.

Esther had been a resident of the Sheffiled Care Center since 1987. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Thornton and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include eight grandchildren, Dennis Springer and his wife, Sharon, of Clear Lake, Jan Dorenkamp and her husband, David, Debra Lerdal and her husband, Terry, Barbara Hopkey and her husband, Mike, Roger Engebretson and his wife, Linda, Nan Jurgens and her husband, Kevin, Scott Engebretson and his wife, Christy, all of Thornton, and Becky Messelheiser and her husband, Dean, of San Antonio, Texas; one granddaughter-in-law, Sharon Springer of Garner; two daughters-in-law, Rose Springer and Eleanor Engebretson of Thornton; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin sons, a grandson, one sister and four brothers.

EVANSDALE - Rebecca Jo Vanderlan, 47, formerly of Charles City, died Friday (May 7, 1999) at her home in Evansdale.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Mark Anderson, pastors, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from noon to 9 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Rebecca Jo Vanderlan was born Aug. 27, 1951, at Charles City, the daughter of Vernon "Van" and Marilyn Hambly Vanderlan. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1969 and from the University of Northern Iowa.

On May 25, 1974, she was united in marriage to Thomas Dix at Charles City. They later divorced.

Rebecca Jo had been employed as a secretary at John Deere for 12 years and was a secretary at the University of Northern Iowa at the time of her death. She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Rebecca Jo enjoyed her dogs, flowers gardening, bicycling and being with her family.

Living family members include a son, Lucas Dix of Milwaukee, Wis., and her parents, Vernon "Van" and Marilyn Vanderlan of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

NORA SPRINGS - Wayne I. Milhous, 89, of rural Nora Springs, died Saturday (May 8, 1999) at his home.

MARVIN FREDERICK BARZ

KLEMME - Marvin Frederick Barz, 90, died Saturday (May 8, 1999) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, with the Rev. Georgia White-Kisslring officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral Home, Klemme, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Marvin Frederick Barz, the son of Frederick and Martha (Hartbeck) Barz, was born on Dec. 3, 1908, on a farm northeast of Klemme in Ell Township. He attended rural country school and Klemme High School.

On Oct. 11, 1952, Marvin was married to Gladys Kothenbeutel of rural Kanawha at the home of the bride's parents by the Rev. Calvin Grossheusch.

The couple farmed for many years northeast of Klemme. Upon retiring, Marvin took up woodworking as a hobby, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He remained active until his health would not permit him.

Marvin was a member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gladys, of Klemme; a daughter, Darlene Trenary of Kanawha; two grandchildren, Connie Marciniak and her husband, Jim, of Garner, and Marvin Trenary and his wife, Nancy of Kanawha; seven great-grandchildren, Dustin, Laura, James, Mike, Amy, Shannon and Cory; two great-great-grandchildren, Bailey and Brianna; and two sisters, Ella Rosendahl of Klemme and Doris Greimann of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Richard "Jim" Trenary; and two brothers, Harvey and Ronald Barz.
