CONNIE JOAN KALGAARDEN

CLEAR LAKE - Connie Joan Kalgaarden, 66, of 1900 N. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Friday (June 4, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett. The Rev. Selmer G. Hernes will officiate. Burial will be in Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kensett.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church.

The family suggests memorials may be given in her name.

Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of services.

Connie was born Aug. 12, 1932, in Sherman Township, Havelock, the daughter of Clyde and Audrey (Brechler) Speer. She attended school in Storm Lake, and graduated from Fonda High School, Fonda, in 1950. She received her teacher's certificate through Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, in the 1960s. She taught at Armstrong, Lime Springs and in Riceville for 29 years as a kindergarten teacher. She retired in 1994.

On April 26, 1980, she was united in marriage with Morris Kalgaarden at Elk Creek Lutheran Church. She moved to Clear Lake in 1994.

Connie taught at Little Treasures Day Care, Clear Lake. She devoted her life to teaching and helping young children.

Her favorite pasttimes included tending to her flowers, going to rummage sales, and shopping.

Connie's family was the most important part of her life and they will fondly remember her smile, energy and happy outlook.

She was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Iowa State Teachers Association, and the Riceville Education Association.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Morris, of Kensett; a son, Terry Johnson and his wife, Carolyn, of Lime Springs; a daughter, Kimberly Huinker and her husband, Kevin, of Ft. Atkinson; six grandchildren, Kathleen, Kelsey and Kristen Huinker, and Jackie, James and Dean Johnson; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Johnson; a sister, Gloria Heinkel of Hampton; a brother, Ron Kent and his wife, Doris, of Rochester, Minn.; and a niece, Suzanne Kent.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and step-fathers, Wayne Tweddale and Alec Kent.

CLETUS J. HOLZER

CHARLES CITY - Cletus J. Holzer, 80, died Saturday (June 5, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted at graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, where the St. Theresa's Circle will recite the rosary at 3 p.m., and a 7 p.m. vigil scriptural wake service, followed by the recitation of the rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

LEO FRANCIS JOHNSON

PLYMOUTH - Leo Francis Johnson, 89, died Saturday (June 5, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Plymouth, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a rosary service at 7 p.m.

Leo Francis Johnson was born Feb. 6, 1910, in rural Mason City, the son of Byron and Theresa (Hovel) Johnson.

He was united in marriage to Josephine Falk on Nov. 21, 1934, at Stacyville. They lived on a farm in the Plymouth area for more than 50 years, from 1934 to present. He was the president of the Bohemian Cemetery Board for many years, and always enjoyed giving visitors to Plymouth the tour of the town, the "cook's tour."

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons, James and wife, Coralee Johnson, Mason City, Richard and his wife, Marlene, Plymouth, and Thomas and his wife, Julie Johnson, Dougherty; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Josephine, in April 1999; a daughter, Betty Berhow, in 1968; one granddaughter, Julie Johnson, in 1976; two brothers; and one sister.

ALLAN C. ENDERSON

THOMPSON - Allan C. Enderson, 72, died Saturday (June 5, 1999) at the Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake Mills Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alf Merseth officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Mills Evangelical Synod Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

MABEL RIDDER

MASON CITY - Mabel Ridder, 91, of Mason City, passed away Saturday (June 5, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with the Rev. Bob Pinkerton officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner.

Mabel Lillian Fern Ridder, the daughter of Edward J. and Mary (Suckow) Schaefer, was born March 28, 1908, at Liberty Township, west of Klemme. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1926, as valedictorian. She attended Cedar Falls College, and in 1928, began teaching at Liberty Township No. 8. Mabel attended college each summer and graduated from the Elementary Education course. From 1929 to 1930, she taught at Liberty Township No. 5, and from 1931 to 1932, she taught fifth and sixth grade at Meservey. From 1933 to 1937, she taught at Rowan. On March 18, 1937, she was married to Herold E. Ridder on top of the tower at Pilot Knob State Park at Forest City, by her uncle, Rev. William Suckow, minister of the Congregational Church in Forest City. They farmed from 1937 to 1971, south of Nora Springs. From 1971 to 1975, they lived and worked at the Christian Defenders' Townhouse in Harrison, Ark. In 1975, they moved to the Prairie View Apartments, where she worked part-time in the kitchen and dining room. She moved to Mason City in 1992, residing at Willow Pointe. Mabel and Herold had been active members of the Methodist Church in Nora Springs, and the Baptist Church while in Arkansas. She enjoyed visiting with her family and friends and sending and receiving letters in the mail.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Gertrude Beier of Garner; many nieces and nephews, and a special grand-niece, Nola Waddingham and her husband, Arlan, of Meservey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herold, on Aug. 13, 1984; a daughter, Charlene Marie, who died in infancy; parents; and three brothers, Benjamin Schaefer in World War I, Roy I. Schaefer, and Elmer Schaefer.

EDNA M. BLANDIN

STACYVILLE - Edna M. Blandin, 91, of Stacyville, formerly of Osage, died Saturday (June 5, 1999) at Stacyville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Edna was born April 15, 1908, at Osage, the daughter of George and Anna (Pierce) Gulliver. She attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School. She was employed at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage for 27 years, working as an aide in the nursery taking care of newborn babies.

Survivors include one daughter, Colleen Kloberdanz of Osage; one sister, Evelyn Overturf of Cartersville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Nancy Kloberdanz of Washington, D.C., Brian Kloberdanz and wife, Susan, of St. Charles, Ill., Joan Hoagland and husband, David, of Mapleton, and Dianne Klinker and husband, William, of Primghar; six great-grandchildren, Abby Kloberdanz, Katie Hoagland, Laura Hoagland, Thor Klinker, Knute Klinker, and Gunnar Klinker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters, one son-in-law, and one grandson.

BETTY FERRIE

CRESCO - Betty Ferrie, 66, died Thursday (June 3, 1999) at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home and at the church an hour prior to services. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m., and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. today.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil, of Cresco; her mother, Louise Reicks of Elma; five sons, Gerald of Cresco, Duane of Tavares, Fla., Kenneth of Hayworth, Ill., Daniel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Denis of Cresco; six daughters, Judy Erdman of Whittemore, Dianne Loebach of Whittemore, Janis Spalla of Ridgeway, Karen Ferrie of Mason City, Shirley Schatz of Lime Springs, and Annette Koudelka of Nevada; 39 grandchildren; two brothers, Merlin Reicks of Cresco, and Virgil Reicks of Harmony, Minn.; and three sisters, Shirley Martinek of Cresco, Darlene Vsetecka of Alta Vista, and Luverne Loftus of Dodge Center, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert; one son, James; and two grandchildren, Heather Schatz and Jami Loebach.

HELEN LOUISE TURBETT

MASON CITY - Helen Louise Turbett, 69, of 807 S. Van Buren Ave., died Saturday (June 5, 1999) at her residence.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Officiating will be the Lt. Jon Augenstein of the Salvation Army. There will be no visitation. The body was cremated.

Helen was born Feb. 22, 1930, the daughter of Orrin and Martha (Martians) Thompson, in Northwood. As a child, Helen attended the Northwood public school system and later graduated from Northwood High School. Following high school, Helen moved to Albert Lea, Minn., where she had resided for many years. In 1974, she moved to Mason City, where she and her husband have resided ever since. Upon arriving in Mason City, Helen acquired a job at the Good Shepherd Health Center as a nurse's aide. She was employed there until her retirement in 1986.

Helen was united in marriage to Lynn Turbett on Dec. 3, 1983, in Austin, Minn.

Helen's hobbies included hand crafting and collecting all types of dolls. She could be found doing embroidery work and tending to her flower gardens. Helen was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3416 of Mason City, and a member of the Home League at the Salvation Army.

Those thankful for having shared in Helen's life include her husband, Lynn; three sons, Donald and his wife, Karen Turbett, of Minneapolis, Mark and his wife, Judy Turbett, of Clarks Grove, Minn., and Ronald and his wife, Barb Turbett, of Apple Valley, Minn.; three sisters, Nancy and her husband, Bill Young, of Garner, Mavis Fitzgerald of Mason City and Sharon DeMaris of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Thompson of Daylistown, Penn., and Marlys Thompson of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Christine Turbett, Debra Stoddard, Teresa Turbett, Melissa Standahl, Gary Turbett, Lindsey Lorey, Matthew Turbett and Jonathan Turbett; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

ROBERT KAVAYA

WHITTIER, Calif. - Robert Kavaya, 75, passed away on May 30, 1999 at his home in Whittier, Calif. He was born in Mason City, Iowa on March 22, 1924.

He is survived by his sister, Goldie, of Whittier, Calif. and brothers, George, of Alhambra, Calif.; Nicholas, of Mason City, Iowa; Dan, of Indio, Calif.; and Resta, of Whittier, Calif.

Services were held at St. Steven's Servian Orthodox Cathedral, in Alhambra, with the Rev. Nicholas Ceko, officiating. Graveside services were presented by the United States Marines at the cemetery.

He was a very proud of being a Marine and of serving his country in the United States Marines.

LYLE C. BARTELL SR.

MASON CITY - Lyle C. Bartell Sr., 77, of 728 S. Polk, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John Gannett officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association (flag and 'Taps").

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Lyle C. Bartell Sr. Memorial Fund.

Lyle C. Bartell Sr. was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Mason City, Iowa, to Oscar D. and Alice (Foster) Bartell. Lyle attended Mason City Schools.

Lyle served in the U.S. Army during World War II in New Guinea from December of 1942 to December of 1945.

Lyle married Clara Holmen at the Trinity Lutheran Church on May 1, 1948. Lyle was employed at Mason City Brick & Tile for 28 years, retiring in 1977 due to ill health.

Lyle loved doing yard work and tinkering with his car and for many years, he enjoyed his fishing trips with his family to northern Minnesota. Lyle also was an avid reader.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Bartell, of Mason City; one son, Lyle Bartell Jr., and his wife, Beth, of Mason City; two daughters, Laurie Cowell and her husband, Buzz, of Mason City, and Linda Clarke and her husband, Dan, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Tracy Albrecht and her husband, Scott, of Mason City and Matt Bartell, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gale, Bob and DeLos; and two sisters, Virginia and Beulah.

MILDRED 'MILLIE' BETH YATES 

CLEAR LAKE - Mildred "Millie" Beth Yates, 69, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient United, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Township Cemetery, Titonka.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.

Millie was born Aug. 10, 1929, in Algona, Iowa, the daughter of Jerry R. and Vera (Klenk) Schutjer. Her mother died shortly after birth. Jerry later married Dorothy (Betty) Schutjer and together they raised Millie.

She graduated from Titonka High School in 1947 and attended both Iowa State and the University of Iowa, where she met her husband, Forest Clyde Yates. They married on June 21, 1950. Millie and Clyde settled in Clear Lake in 1962.

She had been an avid gardener, bird watcher, and enjoyed dancing, traveling and being a "grandma."

Millie is survived by three children, Cal Yates, his wife, Janet and their children, Brad and Lesley; Barbara Ott and her husband, Rock; and Mark Yates, his wife, Christina, and their children, Alyse, Page, Faith and Rowdy; her brother, Doug Schutjer and his wife, Mary, of Palm Harbour, Fla.; and her best friend, Ed Snopeck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and adoptive mother, Dorothy (Betty) Schutjer.

CHARLES CITY - Rueben E. Daake, 94, of 6 Cedar Terrace S., died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Wesleyan Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Paul Boostrom officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City, with a flag presentation at the graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday.

ERNEST B. SMOLIK

OSAGE - Ernest B. Smolik, 90, of Osage, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Ernest was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Brainard, Neb., the son of Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik. He graduated from Cresco High School where he participated in wrestling. After high school, he worked for a construction company and then farmed with his brothers, Ed and Ray. He also worked for Pioneer Seed Co., and in 1935, he became the first Pioneer Seed Corn dealer in Mitchell County. In 1942, he came a partner in the Orchard Elevator and was sole owner from 1948 until he retired.

He was on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Grain and Feed Association for two terms and participated in civic affairs by serving on the Mitchell County School Board and serving as Orchard mayor and council person for many years.

Ernest married Velva Wright of Little Cedar on May 1, 1937, at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. They lived in the Orchard and Osage area all of their married lives.

For many years, he played softball, bowled and golfed. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a 50 year member of the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be directed to the Orchard American Legion Post 641 at P. O. Box 65, Orchard, Iowa 50460.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur J. Hill officiating and Masonic Rites by the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday until time of services.

He is survived by one son, Gary Smolik and his wife, Margaret, of Orchard; four grandchildren, Sister Katherine Smolik, OSB of Clyde, Mo.; Frank Smolik and his wife, Becky, of Mason City; Mark Smolik, of Orchard; and Michael Smolik and his wife, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers, Edward Smolik and Ray Smolik, both of Osage; and Duane Smolik, of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Lydia Deal, of Boone, Iowa and Helen Lund, of Bellevue, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velva; two sisters, Adeline Michels and Libby Smolik; a brother, George Smolik; and his parents.

MANKATO, Minn. - Hazel Quame, 89, of Mankato, formerly of Rake, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the Hillcrest Health Care Center, Mankato.

BEVALYN WALLACE

MASON CITY - Bevalyn Wallace, 83, of 815 Sixth Pl. S.E., Mason City, died after a lengthy illness Tuesday (June 8, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the Willson Chapel, First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., Mason City. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Dick Scheerer officiating.

The family asks that no flowers be sent and that any memorials be given to the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, or the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City.

Bevalyn Webb was born Jan. 20, 1916, at West Liberty, Iowa, to Edward L. and Carrie Sausoman Webb. She married Dale S. Wallace on Sept. 19, 1942, at Morganfield, Ky.

She graduated from West Liberty High School in 1933, Burlington School of Nursing in 1937 and completed post-graduate work in Ob-Gyn at the University of Chicago Lying-In Hospital in 1940. A dedicated and caring registered nurse, Bevalyn started the school nursing program in the Britt Community Schools in 1953 and remained as the school nurse until 1966. Following a move to Mason City, she continued her nursing career at Park Clinics as the chief ob-gyn nurse until her retirement in 1978.

Bevalyn was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron and Grand Representative for the state of Iowa. A devoted volunteer, she gave countless hours of service to Handicap Village in Clear Lake, West Campus Mercy Hospital and Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City. An active member of the First Congregational Church, Mason City, Bevalyn served on numerous committees and boards.

Survivors include her husband Dale; a son, Major General Stewart W. Wallace and wife Debrah of Ft. Monroe, Va.; a daughter, Carolyn N. Furlong of Aurora, Colo.; a granddaughter, Cassandra Wallace of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a grandson, Scott Wallace of Adrian, Mich., and a step-grandson, Chris Finch of Ft. Monroe, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

FERN LAVONNE HILL

DOWS - Funeral services for Fern LaVonne Hill, 84, of Dows, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the United Methodist Church, in Dows, with the Rev. James Turner and the Rev. S. W. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elledge Funeral Home, Dows.

Fern died Monday (June 7, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Fern was born Oct. 11, 1914, near Rowan, the daughter of Emmett and Leona (Huntington) Carr. She attended the Rowan School and graduated from Alexander Consolidated School in 1932. While in school, she participated in speech, sports, and music while receiving honors and she was the class valedictorian. She pitched girls softball games for six years.

She graduated from Northern Iowa College in 1933, with an Iowa State Rural Teaching certificate. Upon graduation, she taught for three years in country schools in the Dows and Rowan area.

On March 25, 1936, she was united in marriage to Clair C. Hill, of Dows, in the Rowan Methodist Church Parsonage by the Rev. H.E. Harvey. They were one couple of five of the Hill children who were married by the Rev. Harvey.

She was a member of the Rowan Methodist Church having served on the church board and teaching Sunday school for 25 years. She served every office of the Women's unit and some offices several times such as being treasurer for 13 years. She was a charter life member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. After moving to their home in Dows, she transferred her memberships to the Dows United Methodist Church.

She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, Chairman of Rowan Parent Teachers for three years and supporter of 4-H programs for many years.

Clair and Fern helped to organize the Dows Senior Citizens and served as co-chairmen for 11 years. In 1977, she received the honors as Outstanding Senior Citizen for Dows, Wright County and the Area 5. In 1979, she received the Iowa State 2nd place citation individual award in senior achievement.

Fern and Clair planned and hosted many senior bus trips from California to Prince Edward Island, and from Canada to Texas.

Fern enjoyed being outdoors, working in her garden, caring for her flowers, caring for the chickens and their eggs, working in the farm fields, being with friends and relatives, and crocheting.

Most of all she loved her faithful husband, Clair; and their family, two sons, Cecil and his wife, Mary, of Clear Lake; and Darwin and his wife, Marilyn, of Latimer; and two daughters, Leola Erickson, of Lincoln, Neb. and Marilyn Carlson and her husband, Gary, of Spencer; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Azeltine, of Latimer and Iris Nelson and her husband, Ernest, of Rowan; and a sister-in-law, Cleo Carr, of Hampton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Leona Carr; one brother, Arnold Carr; one daughter-in-law, Delores Hill; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Gerlach.

Fern now enters the room in Heaven which has been waiting for her.

CLARION - Dr. Walter M. Brauer, 76, of 2610 Nightingale Lane, Wausau, Wis., died Monday (June 7, 1999) at the Community Health Care Wausau Hospital.

REV. JOSEPH F. GRIFFIN

LAWLER - The funeral arrangements for the Rev. Joseph F. Griffin are as follows:

Joseph F. Griffin was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Lawler, son of Frank A. and Baptista M. Griffin. He died on Monday (June 7, 1999) in Dubuque.

He received his college education at Loras College, Dubuque. His seminary training was received at Mount St. Mary of the West, Norwood, Ohio. He did graduate work at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo.

Father Griffin was ordained a priest on Dec. 20, 1947, at Christ the King Chapel, Loras College, Dubuque, by Archbishop Henry P. Rohlman for service in the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Father Griffin served as Associate Pastor at Holy Ghost, Dubuque (1948-1954); St. Mary, Waterloo (1954-1955); St. Patrick, Dubuque.

Father Griffin served as pastor of Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids (1958-1960); Sts. Peter and Paul, Gilbert and Good Shepherd, Jewell (1960-1969); Visitation, Stacyville (1969-1972); St. Mary, Waterloo (1972-1979); St. John the Evangelist, Coggon (1979-1981); St. Patrick, Clear Lake (1981-1982); St. Patrick, Buffalo Center and Sacred Heart, Woden (1983-1984); St. Joseph, Earlville (1984-1988).

Father Griffin served as Chaplin at Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque (1957) and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City (1988-1993).

Father Griffin retired in 1993 and lived at Immaculate Conception in Cedar Rapids, the Villa Raphael in Dubuque and Stonehill Care Facility in Dubuque.

Father Griffin is survived by a sister, Helen Ferelman, who lives in Washington State; and four nieces, Pat Nelson, Mary Jo Schmitt, Jeanne Sheely, and Sally Cole and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary.

JOHN JOSEPH WEST

HUDSON, Ohio - John Joseph West, 81, of Cutler Lane, Hudson, Ohio, died Tuesday (June 8, 1999) at Hospice Care Center in Fairlawn.

He was born June 14, 1917, in Sheldon, to Albert R. and Mary Ellen (Hart) West. He was a veteran of the 5th Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of the University of Iowa. In St. Charles, he worked for the Edward Hines Lumber Co. and later he was an independent lumber trader. He retired in 1982.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the St. Charles County Club. He most loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane (Davis); son, John (Eileen), of Stow, Ohio; daughter, Martha (Mark) Jenkins, of Hudson, Ohio; four grandchildren, Erin West, Anne West, Jennifer Jenkins and Patricia Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Cathryn; and sister, Evelyn Falbe.

KEVIN D. DICKSON

SHEFFIELD - Kevin D. Dickson, 22, of Lorimor, formerly of Sheffield, died in 1990 in Clark County.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 1999, at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Kevin D. Dickson was born Feb. 16, 1968, the son of Earl and Alfreda (Baxter) Dickson in Plattsburg, N.Y. He attended school in Plattsburg, before graduating from the Humiston School system in Humingston.

Following school, he started his career in carpentry and cabinet making. He served two years in the Iowa National Guard, based out of Sheridan.

Kevin enjoyed fishing and camping in his spare time.

He is survived by his son, Cody Dickson, of Heddick; his mother, Alfreda Dickson, of Sheffield; one brother, David Gordon, of Plattsburg, N.Y.; one sister, Naomi Mason, of E. Providence, R.I.
