 OLAF M. LUND

MANKATO, Minn. - Olaf M. Lund, 95, of Mankato, formerly of Hanlontown, Iowa, died Nov. 26 (1999) at the Mankato House Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Rev. Steve Berkeland as officiant. Burial was in Woodland Hills Memorial Park.

Olaf M. Lund was born Aug. 18, 1904, in Stavanger, Norway, the son of Torbjorn and Anna (Nasheim) Lund. He grew up in Stavanger, and moved to America in 1924 at the age of 20. He worked for his cousin in Thor, Iowa, until going to Chicago two years later.

He married Thelma Bray on Aug. 27, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn. They made their home in Hanlontown where he worked as a bulk agent for Standard Oil Company until retirement in 1964. In 1966, they moved to Mankato where they had lived since.

He enjoyed traveling to Norway and had done so several times after his retirement. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma, of Mankato; two daughters, Margaret Johnson and her husband, Gerald, of Mankato, and Betty Parsons and her husband, Robert, of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Woodland Hills Funeral Home, Mankato, was in charge of arrangements.

BERNARD BOHMAN

ALEXANDER - Bernard Bohman, 72, of Alexander, died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

SHIRLEY L. HACKLEY

ALEXANDER - Shirley L. Hackley, 87, of Alexander, passed away Saturday (Dec. 4, 1999) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander with the Rev. Rob Ford officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Shirley Hackley was born Oct. 7, 1912, in Rudd, the daughter of Thomas and Carrie (Bishop) Robeson. She grew up in the Rudd and Charles City areas, where she attended country school.

She was united in marriage to Leland Johnson in 1930. To this union were born two sons, Dale and Roger. She worked at the Corner Cafe in Rowan for a number of years. She later was united in marriage to Glenn Hackley. The couple made their home in the Rowan area, where Glenn worked for the county and she continued to work at the Corner Cafe. He passed away on May 26, 1965. She then moved to Howard County in 1966, where she spent many years with her loving and faithful companion, John Leist. She entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1995. She enjoyed gardening and canning; she always had a jar of her famous pickles ready when the grandchildren came to visit. She also enjoyed playing cards and fishing. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Club and attended the Methodist Church in Saratoga before moving back to the Alexander area.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Kim Johnson and special friend, Rick, of West Union; four grandsons, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Denise, of Alpha, Robert Johnson and special friend, Kathy, of Postville, Mike Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of Castalia, and Rick Johnson and his wife, Kim, of Latimer; 16 great-grandchildren, Katie, Amanda, Katie, Jessica, Carrie, Crystal, Brooke, Karissa, Emily, Ashley, Jennifer, Nate, Travis, Jeremiah, Christopher and Cory; two great-great-grandchildren, Trevor and Hunter; two daughters-in-law, Vivian Pals and her husband, Delbert, of Meservey and Donna Halverson and her husband, Wayne, West Union; sister-in-law, Bea Robeson of Minneapolis, Minn.; special niece, Pat Meyer and her husband, Harold, of Mason City; many other nieces and nephews; and her special extended family, the John Leist family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; two sons, Dale and Roger; one grandson, Alan Johnson; one sister; four brothers; and very special friend, John Leist.

CLIFFORD G. GARD

MASON CITY - Clifford G. Gard, 84, of 1301 N. Hampshire, died Saturday (Dec. 4, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City.

ANNA BERTHA HELENA WEARDA

SHEFFIELD - Anna Bertha Helena Wearda, 87, of Sheffield, died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Wayne DoBratz officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Anna Bertha Helena Wearda was born Nov. 4, 1912, in rural Hampton to Rudolph and Anna (Dohrmann) Behn. She was schooled in country schools near Hampton and graduated from Sheffield High School, where she played basketball. She taught school in country schools for five years before her marriage to Paul Wearda on March 27, 1936, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hampton. They farmed near Sheffield, retiring in 1975 and moving into Sheffield.

She was a Sunday school teacher for many years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, where she was a lifetime member. She was a member of the Cemetery Society, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Senior Citizens and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, flowers, gardening, cooking and canning. She was an avid sports fan and was active in community service. Her real love, though, was her family, enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Pauline Peter and husband, Dean, of Sheffield, Donald Wearda and wife, Jan, of Cresco, Irene Jaspersen and husband, Ken, Omaha, Neb., Denise Hogan and husband, Dean, Ft. Madison, and Denise Sogard and husband, Jim, of Eldora; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert Behn and wife, Marguerite, of Hampton, and Ernest Behn and wife, Marvel, of Boone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Feb. 27, 1990, three sisters, Hilda, Esther and Alice, two brothers, Reinhold and Paul, and one great-grandchild.
