ETHEL M. HUBER

MASON CITY - Ethel M. Huber, 71, died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1999) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

A funeral memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating.

Ethel was cremated. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church.

LEROY HANSON

NORTHWOOD - LeRoy Hanson, 71, of Northwood, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Al Stoa and the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Following funeral services, his body will be cremated with burial at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7920, Osage.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the First Lutheran Church and one hour prior to services on Monday.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

LeRoy Hanson was born on Oct. 28, 1927, in rural Northwood, Worth County, the son of Albert E. and Ella Florence (Anonson) Hanson. He was baptized in their home in rural Brookfield Township, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Bristol Lutheran Church. He attended and received his education in the country schools at Brookfield No. 3, rural Northwood.

After completing his schooling, he helped out his parents on the family farm. He then rented a farm south of Tenold on the Melvin Burtness farm. On Sept. 8, 1950, he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving overseas in Germany during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on Aug. 29, 1952. After his honorable discharge, he worked for the Diamond Trucking Company in Charles City. He was also employed for seven years with Deckers Meat Packing Company in Mason City, Al Severson's Mobile Home Trailer Park as a maintenance person for 14 years in Northfield, Minn. and Waseca, Minn. For three years, he worked in the Lumber yard in Northfield, Minn. and Kensett Homes in Kensett until his retirement in 1988. LeRoy also lived in Manly for 10 years, where he was the school crossing guard and also delivered Meals on Wheels before moving to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7920 in Osage, former member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City, former member of the Manly Lions Club, Sons of Norway and former member of the Eagles Lodge in Northfield, Minn.

Left to cherish his memory is a twin brother, Lawrence A. Hanson, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood; several cousins; and special friends, Gary Drentlaw and his wife, Barb, and their children, Phillip, Lesia, Kim and Andy, of Northfield, Minn.; Cheryl Cooper, of Mason City, Peter Ferleman and his wife, Loie, of Mason City, Bea Ferleman, of Olatha, Kan., and David Ferleman, of Tennessee, as well as other friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

GLEN B. PALS

BELMOND - Glen B. Pals, 80, passed away Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond.

Funeral services for Glen B. Pals will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Pat Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery, near Alexander.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Glen, the son of Herman and Dena Peil Pals, was born March 3, 1919, in Alexander. He grew up and attended country school in the Alexander and Meservey area. As a young man, Glen worked as a farm laborer for Ben Peil. He then started farming with his brother, Robert, in 1954.

On March 25, 1967, he was united in marriage to Alice Peil. Alice passed away in 1970.

On Aug. 3, 1973, he was united in marriage to Lois Schlichting. The couple made their home southeast of Klemme, where Glen continued farming until retiring in 1982. In 1987, they moved to Belmond.

Glen enjoyed watching rodeos and he loved horses. He was also a nature lover, who was always looking for birds and deer. He liked to go for rides in his car. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Glen and Lois enjoyed camping, wintering in Texas 11 years. Glen was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, where he was baptized in 1978.

Glen is survived by his wife, Lois; four stepchildren, Wayne Schlichting and his wife, Linda, of Britt, Merlin Schlichting and his wife, Kay, of Britt, Melvin Schlichting, of Klemme, and Donavon Peil, of Belmond; 15 grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Koenen, of Meservey, and Berniece Suntken and her husband, Herman, of Belmond; one brother, Robert Pals, of Alexander.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

DES MOINES - Del James Haas, 39, of Des Moines, formerly of Algona, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at the Kavanaugh Hospice House, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

ALGONA - Verena L. McGuire, 73, of Algona, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

MASON CITY - Jennie L. Mentink, 84, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

MARIA G. KLEIN

OSAGE - Maria G. Klein, 85, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage. Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Maria was born May 2, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of Otto and Paula (Beasm) Hoppe. She lived in Omaha, Neb., and East Chicago, Ind.

On Jan. 23, 1954, Maria was united in marriage to Myron Klein in East Chicago, Ind. They moved to the Orchard area in 1956 and to Osage in 1958. Maria was employed by Marr Knitting and Fox River Mills of Osage, retiring in 1985.

She enjoyed knitting and recently was recognized for the knitting of afghans that were used by Hospice. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Maria is survived by her husband, Myron Klein, Osage; a son, Raymond Boge and his wife, Nancy, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; two grandchildren, Thomas Boge and his wife, Katie, and their children, Kyle and Kelli, of Olatha, Kan., and Jill Schlies and her husband, Bill, and their children, Michael and Kathryn, of Waukesha, Wis.; and two sisters, Gertrude Garraffa, Highland, Ind., and Ruth Anderson, Littleton, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and three brothers.

EAGLE GROVE - Leona E. Gross, 87, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at her home in Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove.

RAKE - Inga Engelby, 88, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center. Other arrangements are incomplete.

JENNIE L. MENTINK

MASON CITY - Jennie L. Mentink, 94, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Nils C. "Chris" Hellevik officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and visitation will resume one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Jennie Mentink Memorial Fund.

Jennie L. Mentink was born Sept. 30, 1904, in Lisbon, to James N. and Louetta G. (Dixon) Meehan. She attended Lisbon schools.

On Jan. 26, 1926, she married Louis J. Mentink in Lisbon. They moved to Clear Lake that same year and then to Mason City in 1929.

Jennie has been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. She is a former president of the McKinley School PTA. Jennie enjoyed playing canasta and 500, as well as crocheting. She did like to watch sports, especially the Chicago Bulls.

Jenny was very proud of her family. They include three sons, Maurice E. Mentink and his wife, Lyla, Mason City, John Mentink and his wife, Mary, Mason City, and Joseph Mentink and his wife, Pat, Martinsville, Ind.; three daughters, Arlys Kimball and her husband, Vernon, Mason City, Margaret Johnson and her husband, Dean, Des Plaines, Ill., and Ragna Flatness and her husband, Ron, Mason City; a son-in-law, Paul Fransen, Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Youngquist, Gowrie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis; a daughter in infancy; a daughter, Judy; two brothers, Maurice and Edwin; and one sister, Esther.

SHEFFIELD - Erna A. Boehlje, 91, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Grace Baptist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Bruce Rulapaugh officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Erna was born May 31, 1908, in rural Thornton, the daughter of Deitrich Koster and Emily (Gerdes) Koster.

Erna attended rural schools near Thornton and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1926. Following graduation, Erna moved to Naperville, Ill., where she worked at Kroehler Furniture Factory three years. In 1929 she moved to Sheffield and worked at Schaefer's Department Store for three years.

On May 28, 1933, Erna was united in marriage to Ernest Boehlje at Grace Baptist Church, Sheffield. Following her marriage, the couple farmed first near Sheffield then purchased a farm east of Rockwell in 1941. Erna lived there until 1968, when she moved into Sheffield. She became a resident of the Sheffield Care Center last June.

Erna enjoyed crocheting, ceramics and china painting. She has always been an avid reader. She was active in her church, belonging to the various ladies groups and had been a member of the What's New Club.

Erna is survived by her daughter, Nettiemae Sisson and her husband, Gene, of Leo, Ind.; her son, Raymond Boehlje and his wife, Darlene, of Mason City; and a sister, Edith Schaefer of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Richard and John; one grandchild, Susun; two sisters, Lillian Fedelleck and Elpha Bloomquist; and four brothers, Henry, Albert, Raymond and Vernon.

ETHEL MAE BUTZ HUBER

MASON CITY - Ethel Mae Butz Huber, 71, passed away peacefully at her home at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, on Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1999).

A celebration of her life and family will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. Ethel was cremated and inurnment will be done at a later date. Ethel, daughter of Frank and Helen Marie Vick Butz, was born on June 29, 1928, in Ridgeway. She graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1946. Ethel married Parnell A. Huber on July 9, 1946. They had four children, twins Lynn and Lynda, Beverly and David.

Ethel was the District Clerk for the State of Iowa, Post No. 8, Iowa Highway Patrol, and also worked four years with Job Services of Iowa. She was active in church and community , both at local and state levels. She served eight years with the Red Cross board of directors, ACCW and American Legion Auxiliary, at both county, district and state levels. Ethel was a volunteer for Newman High School girls physical education. She was active in all community drives and political interests.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. One of her many joys was playing cards, spending time with her children and grandchildren. Ethel will always be remembered for her strength, dignity, compassion and love. She was a devoted mother and friend. She was known for her generosity, delightful sense of humor, and her faith in God. Ethel loved her staff at Good Shepherd, Hospice of North Iowa and her many care givers.

Ethel is survived by her four children, Lynn Hubber, Rockwell, Lynda Olson, Coralville, Beverly Huber, Mason City, and David John Huber, Dallas, Texas; 10 gradnchildren; three great-grandchildren; her twin brother, Earl Butz, Sun City, Ariz.; her sister, Alice Pierce, Cresco; her brother Marion Butz, Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews. She had four grand dogs, Addie, Bob, Woody and Annie. She had many special friends, including Cheryl Plagge, Mona Nova and Cindy Hesley, all of Mason City.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Parnell; her parents; two brothers, Russell and Lawrence; and her granddaughter, Elizabeth.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Francis L. Kelleher, 73, formerly of Charles City, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at Northwest Medical Center, Springdale, Ark.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Sunnyside Chapel and Funeral Home, Highway 18 S., Charles City. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, with military rites performed by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Chapel and will resume at 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.

TAMPA, Fla. - Susan A. OHara, 52, formerly of Buffalo Center , died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Fla.

SCOTT R. MABEN

GARNER - Scott Maben, 37, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at his home.

According to his wishes, there will be no services. The body was cremated.

Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.

Scott Rae Maben, the son of Gary and Patricia (Irving) Maben, was born July 8, 1962, at Mason City. He graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1980 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy.

On July 24, 1986, he was married to Loretta Savino at Forest City.

He worked at Winnebago Industries until October of 1988, when he moved to Greeley, Colo., and worked at Distortions Corp. and later for Monforts. Scott moved back to Garner in December of 1997 and worked at Fleetguard in Lake Mills.

He enjoyed his dog, Hades.

Scott is survived by his parents, Gary and Pat Maben, Garner; his daughter, Dakotah Rae Maben, Clear Lake; a nephew and niece, Jeremy and Jenna Jeambey, Garner; his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Gelaine Irving, Garner; and Loretta Arneson, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Blane, July 7, 1963; a sister, Sarah Jo Maben Jeambey, April 14, 1996; paternal grandmother, Gladys Maben, Oct. 22, 1993; and paternal grandfather, Orville Maben, June 17, 1999.

CHARLES CITY - Jack D. Guthart, 70, of 501 Seventh Ave., died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

FOREST CITY - Beverly Krieger, 66, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at her home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Beverly Joan Krieger, the daughter of Milo and Lucille (Bonar) Pitkin, was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Forest City. She attended school in Madison Township and graduated from Forest City High School.

Beverly was employed at Bowen Food Center and as a bookkeeper at Northern Lumber Company, Forest City.

She was united in marriage to Irvin Dean Krieger Dec. 30, 1955, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City.

Pursuing a career in the United States Air Force, they made their home in Omaha, Neb., Spokane, Wash., Waipahu, Hawaii, Charleston, S. C., Columbus, Ohio, and Kansas City, Mo., until May 1972, when retirement from the military lead them to settle back in Forest City.

Beverly enjoyed being active in the following church and community activities: Mission Circle, Awana, Junior Church, Sunday school, BCNU- Club and Madison Birthday Club. She worked at Montgomery Wards, McCoy's Nursery and Kelly Floral.

Beverly also enjoyed gardening, sewing and was creative and talented at crafts, floral design and decorating. Family was very important to Beverly and she treasured her time with them, especially her grandchildren and the time spent at the Pitkin cabin in Clear Lake.

Survivors include her husband, Dean Krieger, of Forest City; her children, Dr. David Krieger, LTC and his wife, UnHui, of Fort Knox, Ky., Diane Fiala and her husband, Joe, of Clear Lake, Debra Nelson and her husband, Tim, of Forest City, and Daryl Krieger and his wife, Tamera, of Forest City; grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Nelson, Mitchell and McKenzie Krieger, all of Forest City, Ashley and Kristine Krieger of Fort Knox, Ky., Alan Abrams of Peoria, Ill., Lonny Fiala of Mason City, and Jennifer Krachmer of Austin, Minn.; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Lucille Pitkin, and a sister, Sheryl Johnson, both of Forest City; a brother, Milo Pitkin Jr., of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Milo J. Pitkin, and an infant great-grandson.

FOREST CITY - Ralph Oudekerk, 70, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

ROY W. HACKBART

OSAGE - Roy W. Hackbart, 87, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Champion Funeral Home, Osage - (515) 732-3706.

Roy was born July 9, 1912, on the family farm in Rock Township, Mitchell County, the son of Edward and Wilhelmina (Tabbert) Hackbart. He attended the Rock Township School No. 5 until the family moved to Osage in 1924. He continued his education in the Osage schools.

He married Mabel Kristiansen at her parents' home in McIntire on June 1, 1941.

Roy farmed, was an active member of the Farm Bureau, past president of Mitchell County Swine Association, and was a breeder of Spotted Poland China swine for which he had many champion pigs.

He retired from farming in 1966. They moved to Osage where he drove school bus for the Osage Community Schools for many years and also worked as a carpenter. In later years Roy and his wife became very active in the antique business, buying, selling and restoration.

Roy was a member of our Savior's Lutheran Church for over 70 years. He was a friend to everyone he met.

Roy is survived by his wife, Mabel of Osage; one brother, Melvin Hackbart of Osage; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oscar and Raymond; and one sister, Elfrieda Beyer.

EVERETT RAY KLEIN

NORTHWOOD - Everett Ray Klein, 76, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Everett Ray Klein was born on Sept. 19, 1922, west of Manly in Worth County, the son of Edward and Mae (Ferrier) Klein. He received his education in the Danville Township schools in rural Manly. After completing his schooling, he worked for the Colby Pioneer Peat Company in Hanlontown.

He was united in marriage to Janet Hrubetz on Oct. 5, 1941, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. After their marriage they began farming west of Fertile before moving north of Hanlontown. They continued to farm there until moving to the Grafton area where they farmed for 17 years. They moved to Northwood in 1965 when he started the Klein Painting and Repair business. He continued to own and operate his business until the time of his death.

Everett enjoyed woodworking, antiques and was always willing to help others, but his great love and enjoyment was his wife, family and grandchildren.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, was an usher at church for over 30 years, a member of Ducks Unlimited and member of the Farm Bureau.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Janet Klein, of Northwood; two daughters, Sharon Tiedeman and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City, and Cynthia Martinson and her husband, Bill, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Lori Ellingson and her husband, Mark, of Mason City, Steve Tiedeman and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Mandy Martinson of Mason City, Richie Martinson and his special friend, Naomi Niles, of Mason City; two great-granddaughters, Chelsea Ellingson and Laurel Tiedeman; two brothers, Myron Klein of Osage and Harold Klein and his wife, Evelyn, of Albuquerque, N. M.; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Maria Klein.

GARNER - Meta M. Bohn, 91, of Garner, passed away Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Interment will be at the Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Meta Marie Bohn, the daughter of Reinhold R. and Minnie (Straatman) Lemke, was born Dec. 5, 1907, on a farm in Liberty Township, south of Garner. She attended rural school in Liberty Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1926. She taught rural schools for four years.

On May 26, 1950, she was married to Carl W. Bohn in Des Moines. They made their home in Garner. In 1933, Carl and Meta purchased the funeral home and furniture store from Rex Shannon. They continued to operate the Bohn Funeral Home until they retired in 1976.

Meta enjoyed her family, church work and cooking.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of a homemakers group.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth L. Tompkins and her husband, Claire, of Garner; and a son, Richard G. Bohn and his wife, Karen, of Duncanville, Texas; eight grandchildren, Jay Tompkins, Julie Bahlmann and her husband, Richard, Steve Bohn and his wife, Jackie, and their son, Jackson, Alan Bohn and his wife, Pamela, Michael Bohn and his wife, Nancy, and their children, Brandon, Aaron and Karissa, Richard E. Bohn and his wife, Sue, and their daughter, Jeni, Christina Chapman and her husband, Todd and their children, Brittany, Kendra and Meagan and Ted Bohn; and a special family member, Missy Bohn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, Feb. 20, 1999; her parents; two brothers, Walter Lemke and Reuben Lemke; and a sister, Irene Yanoski.

James A. Brewer was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Markville, Minn., the son of James Lewis and Sophiah E. (Fuller) Brewer. He attended school in Cloverton, Minn., Rockford and Mason City, Iowa.

Jim served his country in the U.S. Navy as a gunners mate on the U.S.S. Nevada during World War II.

After returning to Mason City, he worked at Thomas Machine Co. where he served his machinist apprenticeship and worked for many years. He also worked for Armour, Yellow Cab and the Memorial Park Cemetery.

For several years, he attended Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church. He is a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. He is also a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge.

Jim liked to travel to different places and to fish.

He will be missed by his family. They include sister, Helen Eggena of Mason City, sister, June Bernhardt of Plymouth, sister, Claudia Paulson of Mason City, sister, Genevieve Hoeppner and husband, Burdette, of Buffalo Center, and sister, Rilla Turner and husband, Lloyd, of Benton, Tenn.; and a whole host of nieces and nephews.

Ethel, daughter of Frank and Helen Marie Vick Butz, was born on June 29, 1928, in Ridgeway, Iowa. She graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1946.

Ethel married Parnell A. Huber on July 9, 1946. They had four children, twins Lynn and Lynda, Beverly and David.

Ethel was the district clerk for the state of Iowa, Post No. 8, Iowa Highway Patrol and also worked four years with Job Services of Iowa. She was active in church and community , both at local and state levels. She served eight years with the Red Cross Board of Directors, ACCW and American Legion Auxiliary, at both county district and state levels. Ethel was a volunteer for Newman High School Girls Physical Education. She was active in all community drives and political interests.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. One of her many joys was playing cards, spending time with her children and grandchildren. Ethel will always be remembered for her strength, dignity, compassion and love. She was a devoted mother and friend. She was known for her generosity, delightful sense of humor and her faith in God. Ethel loved her staff at Good Shepherd, Hospice of North Iowa and her many care givers.

Ethel is survived by her four children, Lynn Huber of Rockwell, Lynda Olson of Coralville, Beverly Huber of Mason City, and David John Huber of Dallas, Texas; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her twin brother, Earl Butz, of Sun City, Ariz.; her sister, Alice Pierce, of Cresco; her brother, Marion Butz, of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews. She had four grand dogs, Addie, Bob, Woody and Annie. She had many special friends including Cheryl Plagge, Mona Nova and Cindy Hesley, all of Mason City.

MYRNA KERR NELSON

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio - Myrna Kerr Nelson was born in Lime Springs on Sept. 24, 1921, and raised in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1939.

She enlisted in the Navy Waves during World War II, and served from November of 1942 to May of 1944. She taught instrumental flying to Navy student pilots.

She married John A. Nelson in Mason City on April 1, 1944, while both were on a short leave.

She was a resident of Parma, Ohio, from 1951 to 1961. During that period, she was active in Girl and Boy Scouts and the PTA. She also devoted a great deal of time to the passage of school construction levies for a rapidly expanding Parma School District.

In 1962, she moved to Wooster, Ohio, with her family. There she was secretary to the superintendent of building and grounds for the College of Wooster.

In 1964, she moved to Deerfield, Ill., with her family, where she worked as secretary to the president of Deerfield Savings and Loan.

In 1964, she returned to the Cleveland area, residing in Parma Heights, Ohio. For a period of 12 years, she served as assistant to the Dean of Arts and Sciences of Cuyahoga Community College, Western Campus, retiring in 1982.

Following her retirement she became active in WAVES National and was a founding member of Western Reserves Unit 133 serving Cleveland, Ohio, and the surrounding area. She was also a charter member of Public Employees Retirees International Cuyahoga County Chapter II. As a member of OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information System), she enjoyed the many programs offered in the arts, humanities, wellness, and volunteer services. She was also a long time member of Parma-South Presbyterian Church in Parma Heights, Ohio, where she served as a deaconess.

Mrs. Nelson passed away Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at the age of 77.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John A. Nelson, retired administrator of Parma Community General Hospital. She is also survived by a son, Craig and his wife, Beth, of Wildwood, Ill.; daughter, Kristine Noll and her husband, Bob, of University Heights, Ohio; and daughter, Nancy Donahue and her husband, Bill, of Strongsville, Ohio; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew, Brian, Katie, Mathew, Michael, and Joshua. She is also survived by her mother, Merle Kerr, of Clear Lake; and a sister, Marcia Burke, of Clear Lake.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Parma-South Presbyterian Church, 6155 Pearl Road, Parma Heights, Ohio. Family will receive friends following the service.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date.

Sharon was married on May 16, 1966, in Waterloo, at the Grace United Methodist Church, to Richard L. Regan. She worked at Specialty Archery Products as a supervisor for five years. She loved to bowl and work outside. She loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Regan, of Nora Springs; son, Blayne Regan, of Nora Springs; daughter, Karrie Regan, of Nora Springs; father, Donald C. Miller, of Mason City; brothers, Robert Charles Miller, of Daleville, Ala. and Donald Miller, of Rockford; one half sister, Pam Shannon, of Mason City; and one grandson, Matthew Regan, of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Miller on Aug. 25, 1986; and a grandson, Brandon.

Louie, the son of John and Sena Smidt Sweers, was born July 7, 1925, on the family farm in Boone Township southwest of Britt. He attended country schools. Following the death of his father, when Louie was 16, he farmed with his mother and his brothers.

Louie was drafted during World War II and served with the U.S. Infantry in the European Theater. He was wounded in France and later captured as a prisoner of war in Luxembourg in December of 1944. He was liberated on May 2, 1945. Following his military service, Louie farmed with his brother, Jake.

On Jan. 16, 1950, Louie was united in marriage with Joan Schoby in Algona. The couple farmed near Britt until 1988, at which time they moved into Britt.

Louie loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also liked new farm machinery, tractors and new cars.

Louie was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Britt. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW, DAV and American Ex-POWs.

Louie is survived by his wife, Joan; three children, Susan Sweers, of Omaha, Neb., Larry Sweers and his wife, Michele, of Iowa Falls, and Jeanie Stickman and her husband, Mike, of Grimes; five grandchildren, David, Dan, Jake, Jennifer and Joe; three sisters, Carrie Schaefer, of Britt, Lucille DeWaard, of Corwith, and Janet Moldenhauer and her husband, Clint, of Forest City; three brothers, Ben Sweers and his wife, Mary Rose, of Britt, Elmer Sweers and his wife, Francine, of Britt, and Herman Sweers and his wife, Sally, of Britt; sister-in-law, Margaret Sweers, of Woden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
