** Patrick A. Janssen

MASON CITY — Funeral services for Patrick A. Janssen, 47, of 617 11th St. N.E., Mason City, formerly of Winterset, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene, with the Rev. Galen E. Smith and the Rev. John Schaull officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First, Greene, is in charge of arrangements.

Patrick A. Janssen was born Sept. 21, 1951, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Bert and Ila Lorraine (Anderson) Janssen; and died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at his sister’s home in Mason City.

He was baptized on March 16, 1955, and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene on March 22, 1964.

He received his education at the Plainfield Public Schools, graduating in 1969. He received a bachelors degree from Westmar College at LeMars in 1973 and masters degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1980. He continued to further his education at Iowa State University in Ames.

His first teaching position was at Twin Rivers School District at Bode, and he later taught at Benton Community Schools in Van Horn. Since 1986, he has been the industrial technology instructor at Winterset Community Schools. During his time he was junior high football and wrestling coach

Due to his health, he was forced to leave his teaching position on April 9, 1998.

Throughout his teaching career he received many recognitions and awards as an educator which includes: Program of the Year Award by the Iowa Industrial Technology Association, of which he was president of that organization in 1994-1995. He was also named Winterset Coach of the Year.

He was a member of the Iowa State Teachers Association, Local Teachers Association, and Des Moines Woodworkers Club. Pat’s interests including woodworking, pheasant and deer hunting, and caring for his German Shepherd named Max..

He will be greatly missed by his two sisters, Mary Jane Baldwin, of Denver and Jean Janssen, of Mason City; his brother, Dan and his wife, Mary Janssen, of Chariton; seven nieces and nephews; Theresa Gobel, Bradley Baldwin, Nicolle Baldwin, Rebecca Baldwin, Bill Anderson, Stacey Janssen, and Megan Janssen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dennis, who died in infancy.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Patrick A. Janssen Memorial Fund in care of the family.

** Magdalena H. Guldberg

HAMPTON — Magdalena Hulda Guldberg, 88, of Hampton, died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel United Christ of Christ, in Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Center Cemetery, rural Latimer.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Magdalena Guldberg was born July 7, 1910, at Primrose.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Schmidt, of Jasper, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one stepdaughter, and one stepgrandson.

** Merrill E. Albers

BUFFALO CENTER — Merrill E. Albers, 69, of Buffalo Center, died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Jim Cherry officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Merrill E. Albers was born March 3, 1929, at Buffalo Center.

Survivors include his daughters, Lorie Bierle, of Buffalo Center; and LeAnn Wempen, of LuVerne; four grandchildren; four brothers, Edwin, of Marshalltown, Gerald, of Janesville, Wis., Donald, of Broomfield, Colo.; and Dennis, of Albia; and two sisters, Arlene Field, of Ankeny and Gladys Sheldon, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, and one granddaughter.

** Ruth L. Smith

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Ruth L. Smith, 76, of La Crosse, formerly of Meservey, Iowa, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the Rev. Roger Hjelle officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until time of services.

Funeral services will also be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the First Reformed Church, in Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. Saturday until time of services on Saturday at the church.

She was born on the family farm in Alexander, Iowa, to Dan R. and Tena (Groen) Schmidt. Ruth grew up on a farm between Meservey and Alexander.

She married Onno J. Suntken in June of 1940 and they had four children. Ruth moved to La Crosse in 1966.

She married Harold Smith in September of 1967. She lived in La Crosse until the time of her death.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing and family gatherings.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Harold; a daughter, Marlys Pruisman and her husband, Dean, of Mason City, Iowa; a son, Dennis L. Suntken and his wife, Sharon, of La Crosse; a son, Delbert Suntken and his wife, Kay, of Taylorsville, Ky.; and a daughter, Audrey Oreskovich and her husband, Randy, of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Marilyn Pruisman, Lyle Pruisman, Dan Pruisman, Sara Bonam, Michael Bonam, Lynda Gayle Shelburne, Sherry Taylor and Brandon Oreskovich; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition, she is survived by three stepdaughters, Carol Jean (Gary) Albrecht, of Rushford, Minn., Sharon (John) Evanhoff, of Reno, Nev., Kathy (Leonard) Larson, of Houston, Minn.; nine stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis (Herman) Statlander, of Meservey, Iowa, Wilma (Roman) Johnson, of Alexander and Shirley (Jack) Faaborg, of Meservey; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Schmidt and Elaine Schmidt, both of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Onno; two brothers, Leonard and Clarence; and an infant sister, Bernice; and a stepson and his wife, Gary and Sharon Smith.

** Earl D. Hearity

MASON CITY — Earl D. Hearity, 82, of 712 13th St. S.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller, of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, in memory of Earl D. Hearity.

Earl D. Hearity was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Emmetsburg, son of Peter J. and Catherine (Walsh) Hearity. He married Buena M. Niewald on June 2, 1944, in Jamica, N.Y.

Earl grew up in Emmetsburg and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Mason City, in 1936. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific. He worked for the federal government as a USDA meat inspector for 30 years until retiring in 1977. He enjoyed to hunt and fish.

Earl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NAFRE).

Survivors include his wife, Buena Hearity, Mason City; one son, Joseph Hearity, of Ottumwa, Iowa; one grandson, Brian Hearity, of Ottumwa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Joseph Hearity; and two sisters, Peterine Hodak and Edna Ladwig.

** Lewis E. Koepke

FOREST CITY — Lewis E. Koepke, 59, of 235 A East C Street, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. John Ayers, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Lewis’ remains will be taken to his mountain in Arkansas the first week of July, 1999.

Lewis E. Koepke was born on Aug. 13, 1939, in Texarkana, Ark., the son of Louis Clark and Zella Arti (Burnett) Koepke.

Lewis loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to go camping.

For the last three months, he resided at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center, Forest City.

Those left to cherish his memory are four children, James Koepke and his wife, Claudine, of Forest City; Rusty Koepke, of Houston; Cyndi Helton, of Texarkana, Ark.; and Kimberly Lopez and her husband, Rob, of Houston; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Parks and her husband, Walter N., of Little Rock, Ark., Martha Dean and her husband, Gay, of Texarkana, Texas; one brother, Lee Koepke and his wife, of Queen City, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Louis Davis, of Houston; several nieces, nephews and friends; and one special friend, Cathy King.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and one sister, Mary Davis.

** Melville William 'Bud' Hughes

CLEAR LAKE — Melville William "Bud" Hughes, 84, a lifetime resident of Clear Lake, died of natural causes Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998).

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. North, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church Endowment Fund.

Bud was born in Clear Lake on April 7, 1914, son of Melville P. and Celia "Clack" Hughes, and dedicated his life to family and service to the community and church. Bud's grandparents settled in Clear Lake in the mid-1800s.

Bud was active in the Boy Scouts. He earned Eagle Scout in 1930; the Silver Beaver Scouter's Key, and the Explorer Silver Award in 1958; and the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor in 1961. Bud served as first scoutmaster for Troop 199 at Opportunity Village in 1981. His oldest scout was 70.

Bud attended the First Congregational Church founded by his great-grandfather, Elder Wood, was a member of the boards of trustees and deacons for many years. He gave the keynote address at the third annual meeting of the National Association of Congregational-Christian Churches in Hartford, Conn.

Bud was an active business man and supporter of Clear Lake his entire life.

He served on the School Board from 1947 to 1953, was honored as Clear Lake's Man of the Year in 1951 for serving as general chairman of the Clear Lake Centennial, and was a long-time member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award given in the Lions organization.

In 1984, Bud was honored with the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.

Bud married Lois Padelford in 1939.

Survivors include four sons, Melville P. "Duke" Hughes and his wife, RoseMarie, of Novato, Calif., Justin R. Hughes and his wife, Joyce, of Fredricksburg, Va., Alan D. Hughes and his wife, Salimah Majeed, of Minneapolis, and Craig B. Hughes and his wife, Barbara, of San Diego; one brother, Dick Hughes and his wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; four sisters, Mary Ann Hughes of Clear Lake, Elizabeth Morrissey of Edina, Minn., Margaret Doudna of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Katherine Short of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and countless children of all ages touched by his tireless devotion to service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Lois in 1989.

Bud has made the world kinder through example and compassion.

** Wayne W. Gazaway Sr.

CLEAR LAKE — Wayne W. Gazaway Sr., 75, of 5851 South Shore Drive, died Sunday (Dec. 6, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Faith Assembly of God, Marshalltown, with the Rev. Bruce Klapp officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home, 212 East State St., Marshalltown.

Wayne W. Gazaway Sr. was born in Marshalltown on June 26, 1923.

He is survived by his wife, Bonita; seven children, the Rev. Wayne "Bill" Gazaway Jr., Maitland, Mo., Calvin Gazaway, Farmington, Mo., Daniel L. Gazaway, Wapello, Mark Gazaway, Overland Park, Kan., Carrie Gazaway, Roeland Park, Kan., David Gazaway, Port Arthur, Texas, and Philip Gazaway, Silsbee, Texas; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Chatham, Pleasant Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three children, two brothers and one sister.
