Leah Rose Laddusaw was born Feb. 24, 1997, in Abbott Northwestern
Hospital of Minneapolis, Minn.
Survivors include her parents, Mark J. and Janet K. (Johnson)
Laddusaw of Burt; and grandparents, Larry and Janet Johnson,
Ruth Long, and Melvin and Marilyn Johnson, all of Burt, Jim and
Betty Laddusaw of Spencer, and Walt and Alphea Jonas of Sioux
City.
She was preceded in death by one sister and grandparents.

Fred E. Kent Jr., 78, died Sunday (March 9, 1997) at Fort Myers,
Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian of Algona; a daughter, Kristy
Kent of Sebring, Fla.; a son, Bruce of Algona; and five grandchildren.

John R. Martin
CAPE CORAL, Fla.
Retired Forest City banker, John R. Martin, died Sunday (March
9, 1997) at his home in Cape Coral, Fla., following a lengthy
illness with cancer. He was 77 years old.
Mr. Martin began his banking career at the Illinois National
Bank of Rockford, Ill., following his discharge from the U.S.
Army after World War II with the rank of master sergeant.
He came to the Forest City Bank and Trust Co. in 1950 and was
elected cashier. In 1966 he became president of the bank. After
the controlling interest in the bank was sold in 1973, Mr. Martin
served as chairman of the board before retiring.
In Forest City, Mr. Martin took active leadership roles in many
facets of the community. He was a member of the executive committee
of the city's 1955 centennial celebration. In 1956 he was a member
of the group that organized Forest City Development, Inc., the
city's industrial development group, which began the recreation
vehicle manufacturing industry in Forest City.
Mr. Martin served a number of terms as a director of the Forest
City Golf Club and was a member of the Forest City Masonic Lodge.
He was an officer of the Iowa Bankers Association.
John Harry Roberts Martin was born July 11, 1919, in Seward,
Ill., the son of Dr. Charles R. and Mabel (Tracey) Martin. He
was graduated from Seward High School and received a bachelor
of arts degree in history from Beloit College, Beloit, Wis.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Cleophas May 24, 1942, in Rockton,
Ill. After his retirement from the Forest City Bank, Mr. and
Mrs. Martin made their home in Clear Lake and then moved to Cape
Coral, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Cape Coral; a son, John
H. Martin and his wife, Jean, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two daughters,
Jane Hildenbrand of Des Moines, and Elizabeth Jill and her husband,
Mark Jefson, of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandsons, Jason Martin
of Cheyenne, John Hildenbrand of Des Moines, and Aaron and Jacob
Jefson of Anchorage; two granddaughters, Jennifer Martin of Cheyenne
and Kathie Hildenbrand of Des Moines; and a great-grandson, Jason
Hildenbrand of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Kilker
and Barbara Martin; a grandson, Ian Jefson; and two sons-in-law,
Cliff Hildenbrand and Steve Hildenbrand.
A private interment at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City will
be held at a later date.
Mrs. Martin's address is 1032 S.E. 43rd Street, Cape Coral,
Fla. 33904.

Esther A. `Thompson' Nauman

Esther A. ``Thompson'' Nauman, 74, of 246 Eighth St. S.E.,
Mason City, died Friday evening (March 7, 1997) at St. Marys
Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Graveside inurnment services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday
at Memorial Park Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. David
Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson-James
Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.
Esther was born on Feb. 25, 1923, at Forest City, a daughter
of Edward and Anna (Rodberg) Vaage.
She graduated from Hanlontown High School.
She was united in marriage to Orville Thompson on Oct. 11, 1942,
at Albany, Mo. She made her home with her parents until Orville
served his country during WWII. Following his return they lived
near Hanlontown and Fertile. Following his death in 1963 she
raised her family in Hanlontown and Clear Lake.
On July 6, 1965, at Charles City she married Arthur Nauman.
They then lived in St. Charles, Mo., and later Davenport. In
1968 they moved to Mason City and has made her home here ever
since. Arthur preceded her in death in 1984.
She is survived by three sons, James and his wife, Sheryl Thompson
of Manly; Steven and his wife, Peggy Thompson of St. Ansgar;
and Jeffrey Thompson of Mason City. She is also survived by one
sister. Mrs. Robert (Sylvia) Elwood, of Jonesburg, Mo.; one brother,
Arthur and his wife, Maxine Vaage of Des Moines; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Orville
and Arthur; and two brothers, Earl and Orvin Vaage.

at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Burial will be in Alden Cemetery.

Ferne Walton was born Oct. 3, 1924, in Oakland Township in Franklin
County, a daughter of Fay and Veva Wells Walton.
She was married to Harold K. Knowles on July 15, 1947, at Mason
City.
She was a 1941 graduate of Popejoy High School and 1972 graduate
of U.N.I. in Cedar Falls. She had been employed as a teacher
of Franklin County, Williams and Iowa Falls Schools. She had
wintered in Texas.
She was a member of Alden United Methodist Church and Faith
Circle and was a 4-H leader, a Sunday school teacher, and Bible
Study.
She is survived by two daughters, Arlys Bernard and husband,
David of Anchorage, Alaska, and Larie Knowles of Clear Lake;
one son, Marlyn Knowles and his wife, Alice of Bellevue, Neb.;
two grandchildren, Michelle and Mathew; three brothers, Wilmer
Walton of Sheffield, Eldon Walton of Des Moines, and Stanley
Walton of Belle Plaine, Minn.; and one sister, Norma Lawson of
Rockwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in
December 1996.

Beulah May LaCoste was born July 10, 1921, in Rudd.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Watschke of Charles City;
three sons, Thomas Watschke, State College, Pa.; Douglas Watschke,
New Hope, Minn., and Gary Watschke, Bedford, N.H.; one daughter,
Colleen Copper of Charles City; one sister, Genevieve Peterson,
Pleasant Valley; and eight grandchildren.

3, 1997) at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital, San Antonio,
Texas.

Geneva United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating.
Inurnment will be in Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva.

Leslie Laipple was born March 15, 1924 at Faulkner.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Laipple, Geneva; two stepdaughters,
Dixie Norman, Geneva, and Robinn Kennedy, Elk Mt., Wyo.; one
stepson, Montey Rodgers, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Susan Hayward,
Denver, Colo., and Mary Jones, Lime Springs; one brother, George

stepgreat-grandchildren.

George W. Hughes, 75, of Garner, died Monday (March 10, 1997)
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

George William Hughes, the son of Richard James and Pearl (Buck)
Hughes, was born Dec. 14, 1921, at Minneapolis, Minn. The family
moved to Mason City where George graduated from high school in
1939.
He worked for Johnston's Flowers & Greenhouse for several years.
On Sept. 25, 1943, he married Betty Arlene Greiman at Zion Evangelical
and Reformed Church in Garner.
They lived in Mason City and Cedar Falls, where George was employed
by Gamble Robinson and the A & P Stores as manager.
In 1950, they moved to Garner where he was a partner in the
E.G. Greiman Construction Company.
In 1974, he joined the McClure Engineering Company of Fort Dodge,
as a resident inspector.
After retiring, he continued to be active as a consultant for
McClure Engineering Company and also in community activities
in Garner.
He enjoyed his family, friends, stamp collecting, golfing, reading
and working crossword puzzles.
He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church where
he served on the consistory. He belonged to the Garner Lions
Club and served as district governor of District 9E of the Iowa
Lions Clubs and was a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also was on the
Garner City Council for 22 years and had served as mayor pro
tem.
He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Hughes of Garner; three
children, Barbara Jo Noble and her husband, Charles, Waseca,
Minn.; and their three children, Julie Jo Hayes and her husband,
Timothy, and their four children, Kelly Hayes, Katy Hayes, Hannah
Hayes and Michael Hayes; David George Noble and his wife, Kristine;
Beth Ann Sellner and her husband, Randy, and their three children,
Rachele, Mandi and Stephanie; Pamela Sue Padgett of Plano, Texas,
and her two sons, Bradley W. Nedved and his daughter, Christi
Nedved, and Shannon L. Nedved; and Charles E. Hughes and his
wife, Amy, of Garner, and their two children, Maggie Hughes and
Dylan Hughes; a sister-in-law, Doris Hughes Parks of Clear Lake;
and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Richard and Pearl Hughes;
and two brothers, Richard M. Hughes and Robert J. Hughes.

Alice P. Lee, 89, of Forest City, died Monday (March 10, 1997)

Alice Pauline Lee, the daughter of Gust and Annie (Hanson) Nelson,
was born Nov. 17, 1907, at Mount Valley Township in Winnebago
County.
She attended rural schools of Winnebago County and graduated
from Forest City High School in 1925.
Alice continued her education and graduated from the Methodist-Kahler
School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn.
On Nov. 26, 1931, she was married to Peter C. Lee in Geneva,
Minn.
They made their home in Clear Lake and in 1934, moved to Chicago,
Ill., where she worked as a nurse.
In 1947, they returned to Forest City where they farmed and
in 1953, moved to Fertile.
Alice also worked as a nurse at the Forest City Community Hospital
until she retired.
In 1974, they moved to Silver Springs, Fla.
She returned to Forest City in 1988 and later moved to the
Good Samaritan Center due to ill health.
Alice enjoyed oil painting, music, nature and her family.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by two sons, John Lee and his wife, Francene,
of Forest City, and David Lee and his wife, Neal, of Roswell,
Ga.; grandchildren, Tori Lee Tegtmeier and her husband, Dan,
of West Union; Monica Lamoreux and her husband, Scott, of Britt;
Debbi Marsh and her husband, Jeff, of Fort Campbell, Ky., and
Sandy and Kim Arrett, both of Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on April 26, 1979;
her parents; great-granddaughter, Courtney Lamoreux; two brothers,
Ernest Nelson and Russell Nelson; and a sister, Ruth Tweeten.

at his home.

Edward H. Smit was born on April 8, 1942, on the family farm
near Meservey, the son of Ben and Ida (Koenen) Smit.
He attended the Meservey school system graduating with the class
of 1960.
Following school, he began working for Lloyd Faaborg, operating
heavy equipment and later became a certified plumber.
He was united in marriage to Georgia Pope on April 13, 1963,
in the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
In 1965, he began working for Sukup Manufacturing Co. of Sheffield
serving in many capacities until in later years, working as a
new product engineer until retiring on July 1, 1996.
Edward enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time
with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia, of Sheffield; four daughters,
Lorri Hall and her husband, Todd; Kathy Nierengarten and her
husband, Terry; Cheryl Larson and her husband, Rick, and Janet
Larson and her husband, Lance, all of Sheffield; three grandchildren,
Kelsey Nierengarten, Tyler Larson and Courtney Larson; his mother,
Ida Smit of Meservey; four sisters, Betty Nedved and her husband,
Elmer, of Garner; Ione Hayungs and her husband, Ernest of Clear
Lake; Lois Jenison of Belmond, and JoAnn Ritter and her husband,
Mike, of Goodell; two brothers, Harlan Smit and his wife, JoAnne,
of Sheffield, and Alvin Smith and his wife, Jackie, of Thornton.

Helen Mendon

Helen Mendon, 88, of Thornton, died Sunday (March 9, 1997) at
North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul
Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bob Hetrick officiating.
Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup
Funeral Home.
Helen Mendon was born on April 20, 1908, to Hans and Lena Christensen,
the youngest of six children, four boys and two girls. She was
born in Jackson, Minn.
She moved with her family to Thornton, before she was old enough
to go to school, so she spent 12 years in the Thornton school
system, graduating in 1926.
She was married to Charlie Mendon in 1935. They lived in the
Waterloo and Cedar Falls area for many years before moving back
to Thornton.
She played lots of cards with her friends and family and loved
to crochet, knit and do crafts for her family and church.
She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Thornton ever since she and Charlie moved back to Thornton in
1975.
She belonged to the Senior Citizens, also the Quality Club which
was a card club.
She is survived by one son, Gary Mendon and his wife, Deane,
of Long Beach, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Joleen Blythe of Boone;
three grandchildren, Michelle Campbell of Lakeville, Minn.; Mark
Mendon of Kansas City, Mo., and Todd Mendon of Estes Park, Colo.;
and five great-grandchildren; as well as several sisters-in-law;
nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one stepson,
four brothers, one sister and many in-laws.

William ``Billy'' H. Williams, 79, of Boise, formerly of Mason
City, Iowa, died Thursday (March 6, 1997) at the Idaho State
Veterans Home, Boise.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, 1997, at the Idaho
State Veterans Chapel, Boise. Burial was in Cloverdale Memorial
Park, Boise.
Cloverdale Funeral Home, Boise, was in charge of arrangements.
William H. Williams was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Indianapolis,
Ind., to Curtis ``Quick'' and Amelia (Schell) Williams.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1937.
He was a World War II veteran. After World War II, he was in
the National Guard in Mason City, Iowa.
He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Mason City, Iowa.
He worked for Singer Sewing Machine Company in Mason City, Iowa.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Lacey, Woonsocket, S.D.;
two sons, Richard Williams of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Robert Williams
of Longmont, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, one daughter and one
son.

James `Scott' Eden
MASON CITY
James ``Scott'' Eden, 32, of 807 N. Harrison Ave., died Tuesday
morning (March 11, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the First
United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin
Ackerson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral

James Scott Eden was born on Oct. 13, 1964, at Britt. He was
a 1983 graduate of the Mason City High School and then graduated
from the Lincoln Technical School for diesel mechanics in Des
Moines.
He was employed by Mason City International until joining the
Ryder Trucking Services. He worked for Ryder both in Mason City
and Des Moines until returning to Mason City in October of 1990
to become the manager.
Scott was united in marriage to Cheryl Schleuger on May 8, 1996,
in Mason City.
He was an avid pheasant and deer hunter. He also enjoyed working
on his home, and spending time with his family and friends, especially
his children.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Cheryl, Mason City; his
mother, Judie Eden, Mason City; and his father, Jim and his wife,
Miriam Eden, Mason City; his children, Kyle and Kayleigh Eden,
both of Mason City, and Laura and Adam Pederson, both of Fertile;
his maternal grandmother, Margaret Greiman, Garner; his paternal
grandparents, Henry and Mollie Eden, of Davenport; three brothers,
Jon ``Chris'' and his wife, Lori Eden, and their sons, Zachary
and Tyler; Jay ``Brett'' and his wife, Kim Eden and their children,
Michael, Jay and Kaitlynn; and Jason Eden, all of Mason City;
two aunts, Jeanetta Taft, Des Moines; and JoAnn Blank, Peoria,
Ill.; his uncle, David and his wife, Jeanette Greiman, Garner;
his parents-in-law, Darold and Sondra Schleuger of Forest City;
and many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, June Eden; his

Norma E. Fatland, 67, of 2302 242nd St., Ventura, died Monday
(March 10, 1997) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ventura
United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ell
Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour
prior to services on Friday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to the Norma E. Fatland Memorial
Fund.
Norma was born Sept. 10, 1929, north of Mason City, the daughter
of Clarence Robert and Helen Marie Elizabeth (Hagge) Holmes.
She moved with her family to a farm north of Ventura in 1937
and graduated from Ventura High School in 1947.
Norma married Harold Albers on Sept. 28, 1947, at the Clear
Lake United Methodist Church.
They farmed in the Klemme area until 1962 and then moved to
a farm north of Ventura. In 1966, they moved to Ventura Heights
to live, where she has lived ever since. Harold preceded her
in death on June 3, 1968.
Norma worked at the Clear Lake Bank and Trust Company, Clear
Lake, from 1972-1992. Norma married James Fatland on Jan. 7,
1977, at the Reformed Church, Klemme. He preceded her in death
on April 17, 1995.
Norma enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, playing cards, being
with her family and spending time with her sister.
She was truly an angel among her family and friends.
Norma was a member of the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura.
Norma is survived by her children, Cheryl Lutz and her husband,
Randy, Mason City; Charlene Fatland and her husband, Silas, Wiley,
Colo.; Sinva Opheim and her husband, Randy, Plymouth; and Olina
Blasi and her husband, Jim, Hampton; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Lutz,
Jesse Lutz, Nicole Fatland, Krystal Fatland, Kari Neuberger,
Kyle Neuberger, Aaron Opheim, Megan Opheim, Chad Hanneman and
Corey Hanneman; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Hanneman; one
sister, Carolyn Albers, Ventura; and one brother, DuWayne Holmes
and his wife, Darlene, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and one
infant brother.

LONGMONT, Colo.
Miriam L. Livedalen, 75, of Longmont, formerly of Mason City,
Iowa, died Saturday (March 8, 1997) at her home.
Graveside services were held at noon Wednesday, March 12, 1997,
at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, with Deacon Dominic
DeProfio officiating. Military honors were provided by the Naval
Reserve of Denver.

in her memory.
She was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Rockwell, Iowa, to William D.
and Kathleen (O'Brien) Lattimer.
She served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946, being honorably
discharged as a Lt. Jr. Grade.
She married Howard J. Livedalen on July 20, 1948, in Mason City,
Iowa.
She moved to Colorado in 1962 from Mason City, Iowa.
She was the office manager/bookkeeper for a real estate company.
She is survived by three sons, Jim Livedalen and his wife, Diane,
Longmont, Colo.; Neal Livedalen, Lafayette, Colo., and Gary Livedalen
and his wife, Valerie, Rome City, Ind.; three daughters, Ann
Livedalen and her husband, Ken Starr, Greenwood Village, Colo.;
Karen Sanchez and her husband, Alan, Colorado Springs, Colo.,
and Kristi Livedalen, Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren, Brian
