BELMOND
Berneice Julia Eliason, 89, of Minot, N.D., formerly of Belmond,
died Sunday (March 2, 1997) at Trinity Nursing Home, Minot, N.D.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity
Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Jim Carpenter officiating.
Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold
Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the
church.
Berneice Julia (Lein) Eliason, the daughter of Amond A. and
Bertha (Hoovel) Lein, was born Sept. 1, 1907, at Roland.
She was baptized in Roland and after the family moved to a farm
in Winnebago County, she was confirmed at Forest City.
She attended rural schools until moving into Forest City in
1919, graduated from Forest City High School in 1926; attended
Waldorf College, graduating in academic business courses in 1927,
and graduated from Waldorf Junior College Normal in 1930.
She taught rural schools near Kanawha, Garner and Forest City
and upper grades in Miller.
Berneice was united in marriage to Harold C. Eliason on May
30, 1941. They lived at Kanawha until October of 1975, when they
moved to Belmond.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Kanawha and Trinity
Lutheran in Belmond since 1976. She was president and secretary
of Lutheran Aid, Hancock County Extension Council, member LCW,
Dorcas and Esther Circles, Senior Citizens Club, Over 60 Club,
longtime member of the ``Sons of Norway,'' and was secretary
to two presidents of Waldorf College.
Surviving are her children, Arlene Eliason of Minot, N.D.; and
David Eliason of Dubuque; a sister, Pearl Rogers of Austin, Minn.;
and nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Harold,
in 1977; three brothers; and two sisters.

Al Cornick
MASON CITY
Al Cornick, 76, of 108 S. Virginia Ave., died Tuesday (March
4, 1997) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul
Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., with the Rev. James B. Norem
officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full
military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a 7 p.m. Moose Lodge
service and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Al Cornick Memorial Fund.
Al Cornick was born July 31, 1920, in Rockwell, the son of Roy
and Maude (Sharp) Cornick.
Al graduated from Mason City High School and served in the National
Guard and in the United States Navy during World War II.
Al married Karen Brood on May 23, 1953, in Mason City. He was
a self-employed automobile body repairman for many years and
for over 20 years drove a truck for several different companies,
retiring in 1984 from Midwest Drivers.
Al was a life time member of the VFW and a member of the Moose
Lodge and St. Paul Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed car racing, restoring antique cars and trucks and
spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Cornick of Mason City; children,
Lee Cornick and his wife, Mary, Mason City; Lynn Cornick and
his wife, Linda, Rochester, Minn.; Jeff Cornick and his wife,
Peggy, Mason City; Julie Ellerbroek and her husband, Jed, Cedar
Falls; Jon Cornick and his wife, Diane, Waverly; Jim Cornick
and his wife, Jeanne, Mason City; Lori Angell and her husband,
Mike, Mason City; grandchildren, Troy Cornick, Mason City; Andrew
and Benjamin Cornick, Rochester, Minn.; Kinsey and Cameron Cornick,
Mason City; Jed, Joe, Nick and Travis Ellerbroek, Cedar Falls;
Kiefer and Kaleb Cornick, Waverly; and Carter, Jordan, Meredith

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; and granddaughter,

Robert Oitzman, 64, of Dumont, died Monday (March 3, 1997)
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery.

Robert Oitzman was born April 12, 1932, in Harpers Ferry.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Oitzman, Dumont; two sons, Wayne
Oitzman, Mesa, Ariz., and James Oitzman, Dumont; one stepson,
Donald Blakley, Washington, Mo.; one daughter, Debra Henricks,
Dumont; one stepdaughter, Claudia Newton, Hampton; his mother,
Lena Oitzman, Dumont; three brothers, Donald Oitzman, Mesa, Ariz.;
LaVern Oitzman, Las Vegas, Nev., and Richard Oitzman, Apple Valley,
Calif.; one sister, Helen Klousia, Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren;
and two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and one daughter.

Duane R. Maxwell, 72, of 707 Sixth Ave., died Tuesday (March
4, 1997) at home.

officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, with
graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial

Duane Robert Maxwell was born Dec. 13, 1924, in rural Floyd
County on the Burr Farm near Niles Corners.
Survivors include his wife, Ona, of Charles City; one daughter,
Doreen Rich, Charles City; two sons, Michael Maxwell, Knoxville,
Tenn., and David Maxwell, Toms River, N.J.; his mother, Margaret
Maxwell, Charles City; one brother, Robert L. Maxwell, St. Cloud,
Fla.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Helen B. Harmon was born on July 24, 1916, in Ackley, the daughter
of Oscar and Lillian (Glotfelty) Harmon.
She was united in marriage to Ralph W. Harmon on March 7, 1941,
in Hampton.
For many years, she worked at the Thornton Produce and later
as a waitress at the former Lake Crest Cafe, Clear Lake.
She was a member of many organizations which included the United
Methodist Church of Thornton, UMW, Lioness, Rebekahs, Senior
Citizens, Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Auxiliary and Project Warmup
by Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
She is survived by one son, Howard G. Harmon and his wife, Karon,
of Swaldedale; one grandson, Brian L. Harmon and his wife, Holly,
of Des Moines; one granddaughter, Roxanne Conroy and her husband,
Jeff, of Swaledale; and one great-grandson, Jonathan Lyle Conroy.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Helen will be sadly missed by many as she always had a smile
for everyone and was always willing to help when needed.

Roger Duane Olson, the son of Melvin A. and Christina Louise
(Schwartz) Olson, was born April 1, 1940, on a farm near Clear
Lake.
Roger attended school at Ventura and Klemme.
On May 28, 1960, he married Linda L. Wolters at the Little Brown
Church near Nashua.
He worked as a truck driver for the Doden Truck Line in Woden,
for the Klemme Cooperative Elevator, Land O'Lakes in Mason City
for 16 years, and then farmed west of Ventura from 1963, until
the time of his death, Tuesday, March 4, 1997.
He did custom trucking and baling, fed feeder cattle and was
a cattle buyer.
He enjoyed his three grandsons, his family and just enjoyed
working.
He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Olson of Ventura; two sons,
Dan Olson and his wife, Eenja, and their two sons, Jacob and
Daniel, all of Tague, South Korea; and Gregory Olson and his
wife, Kimberly, and their son, Zachary, of Kansas City, Mo.;
his mother, Christina Olsen and her husband, Arlin, of Klemme;
his father, Melvin Olson and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; three
brothers, Merlyn Olson and his wife, Audrey, of Santa Maria,
Calif.; Harland Olsen and his wife, Janet, of Mason City; and
Randy Olsen and his wife, Monica, of Garner; a sister, Susie
Olsen of Klemme; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a special uncle,
Herbert Schwartz.

Norma Marjorie Benner, 79, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (March
5, 1997) at Oakwood Care Center.

The family of Norma Marjorie Benner has requested that memorial

Lake, in her memory.
Norma Marjorie Benner was born on Nov. 13, 1917, in Marble Rock,
the daughter of Alton Martin and Maude Beatrice (Davis) Preston.
She attended and received her education in the Marble Rock schools,
graduating from Marble Rock High School in 1935.
After completing her education, she began working in the print
room for State Brand Creamery in Mason City in 1937.
She was united in marriage to Rodney Duane Benner on Oct. 16,
1938, in Princeton, Mo.
After their marriage, they lived in Mason City, Ventura, and
in October of 1952, they moved to Clear Lake where she cleaned
cottages in Clear Lake for several years.
She enjoyed traveling, country music, cooking, watching soap
operas on TV, and reading, but her great love and enjoyment was
her family and grandchildren.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake
and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #1668 in Clear Lake.
Survivors include her husband, Rodney Benner of Clear Lake;
three daughters, Norma Jean Benner of Iowa City; Nancy Lee Hick
of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Carol Marie Hays of Orlando, Fla.;
one son, James Duane Benner of Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake;
five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Lanora
Schultz of Marble Rock; as well as other relatives and friends.

Myrtle Hunt, 87, a former resident of 1909 Bailey St., died
Wednesday (March 5, 1997) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hauser
Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. A.C. Wegner Jr.
of the Faith Bible Chapel officiating. Burial will occur at a
later date. The body was donated to the University of Iowa Department
of Anatomy.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral
home and from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Myrtle Lorraine Whitson Hunt was born July 21, 1909, at Waverly.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur Hunt, Charles City, and Richard
Hunt, Rockford; two daughters, Gloria Brimer, Carolina Beach,
N.C., and Phyllis Biekert, Mason City; 11 grandchildren; five
stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson,

Euna G. Erickson, 92, of Osage, died Wednesday (March 5, 1997)
at the Faith Home.

Euna G. Erickson was born Feb. 26, 1905, on the family farm
in Jenkins Township, Mitchell County, near McIntire.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Erickson of Okinawa, Japan;
one son, Paul Erickson of Osage; and two granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Walter R. `Bub' Van Nest

Walter R. ``Bub'' Van Nest, 82, of Sheffield, died Thursday
(March 6, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the
First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Beard officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup
Funeral Home.
Walter R. ``Bub'' Van Nest was born on Sept. 12, 1914, in Ross
Township, the son of George W. and Lessie (Runton) Van Nest.
He attended the Chapin Consolidated School System graduating,
from the 12th grade.
On Nov. 15, 1936, he married Alma P. Beeton and he worked for
Alma's father at the filling station.
In 1943, they moved to a farm south of Sheffield, and in 1956,
purchased a farm northeast of town. They lived there until 1965
when they moved into a home in Sheffield and he drove truck for
B&E Trucking.
They became residents of the Sheffield Care Center in 1991,
where Alma passed away on Dec. 2, 1991.
He is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline ``Jackie'' Smit and
her husband, Alvin, of Thornton; one son, Gene Van Nest and his
wife, Ann, of Armstrong; four grandchildren, Pam Wonsmos and
her husband, Bruce, of Thornton; Bruce Smit of Thornton; Michele
Hansen and her husband, Brian, of Rosemount, Minn., and Bob Van
Nest and his fiancee, Mindy Stone, of Estes Park, Colo.; and
five great-grandchildren, Erin and Megan Wonsmos, Blair, Nicholas
and Cory Hansen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one sister.

Kathleen Ann Wallaker, 57, of Kenyon, died Friday (March 7,
1997) at her home surrounded by her family. She died of cancer.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Kenyon with the Rev. Guy Redfield officiating.
Interment will be in Gol Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kenyon.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Hanson Funeral
Home in Kenyon and also one hour prior to services at the church.
Kathleen was born on Aug. 2, 1939, in Faribault, Minn., to Theodore
Kitzman and Elaine Kitzman-LeMieux.
She graduated from Faribault High School in 1957 and married
Richard Wallaker on Jan. 26, 1959, in Cresco, Iowa.
Kathleen began working for Kenyon High School in the fall of
1971. She was employed as a secretary and teacher's aid and in
the fall of 1989, Kathleen became secretary of the Kenyon Elementary
School. She loved her profession, the children and students she
worked with.
Kathleen was a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Kenyon.
She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Wallaker, of Kenyon;
two sons, Jeffrey R. Wallaker of Mason City, and Jamie K. Wallaker
and his wife, Janet, of Durham, N.C.; one daughter, Jody A. (Mrs.
Ron) Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; two grandsons and five granddaughters,
Meghan and Ryan Block, Nathan Wallaker, Jessica and Justine Wallaker,
and Ashley and Angela Hanson; her mother, Elaine LeMieux of Faribault,
Minn.; mother-in-law, Dora Wallaker of Kenyon; four brothers,
Jerry (Shirley) Kitzman, Chuck Kitzman and Bill (Janet) Kitzman,
all of Faribault, Minn.; and Tim (Robbie) Kitzman of Maple Grove,
Minn.; two sisters, Barb (Jim) Swanson and Marsha (Jerry) Moravec,
all of Faribault; and 19 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Theodore Kitzman, on
March 14, 1957, and her step-father, Louis LeMieux, on Dec. 16,
1988.

(March 7, 1997) at her home in Clear Lake.

Rev. David Langer of the First Congregational Church in Buffalo
Center officiating. Following services, cremation will take place.

The family of Judith ``Judy'' Elaine Sharp has requested that
memorial contributions be made to the Judith ``Judy'' Elaine
Sharp memorial fund in her memory.
Judith ``Judy'' Elaine Sharp was born on Feb. 16, 1940, in Decatur,
Ill., a daughter of James Russel and Zola Frances (Riley) Jenkins.
She attended and received her high school education in the Mason
City High School, graduating from Mason City High School in 1958.
After completing her education, she worked as a secretary in
the Mason City area. She was united in marriage to James R. Dickirson.
He preceded her in death. She was united in marriage to Virgil
Sharp on April 30, 1977, in Grundy Center. He preceded her in
death on May 3, 1987. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, walking,
the outdoors, and car rides around the lake, but her great love
and enjoyment was being a housewife, mother, friend to all and
being a babysitter to a special boy, Joshua Trimble of Clear
Lake.
She was a former member of the Moose Lodge #1328 in Mason City.
Left to cherish her memory is her father, James Jenkins of Buffalo
Center; one daughter, Jody R. Cramer and her husband, John B.
of Medford, Minn.; three stepsons, Lee Hoffman of Clear Lake,
Mike Sharp of Michigan and Allan Sharp of Fort Dodge; four stepdaughters,
Darcy Skellenger and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake; Diana Byington
and her husband, Tim, of Clear Lake, Pam West and her husband,
Bill, of Fort Dodge; and Debra Evans and her husband, Kenneth,
of Fort Dodge; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one
sister, Jill Larson and her husband, James, of Buffalo Center;
one nephew, Jeff Ellis, and his wife, Connie, of Mason City;
and a special cousin, Ann Brown, of Niantic, Ill.; as well as
other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Eileen E. Barry, 73, of 614 Decker Street,
Rudd, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday (March 10, 1997) at the Rudd United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial
will be in the Rose Creek Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene and will continue on Monday at the church from
11 a.m. to time of service. There will be a lunch served for
family and friends at the church at noon.
Eileen Elizabeth Raymond was born June 28, 1923, in Greene,
a daughter of Archie B. and Cora B. (Skillen) Raymond. Eileen
Raymond died Friday (March 7, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health
Center in Mason City.
She received her education in the Greene public schools and
on March 22, 1949, she was united in marriage to Russell E. Barry
at the Methodist parsonage in Hampton. Following his discharge,
they made their home in Greene where they operated Barry Installation
Service and Furniture Repair. In 1963, the family moved to Arizona
and later to Huntington Beach, Calif., where they lived for 25
years. Following their retirement, they moved to Houston, Texas,
in 1988. During this time, she was a dedicated volunteer worker
at the Labay Junior High School in Houston where she received
several awards and recognitions for her service. In 1992, they
returned to Iowa, making their home in Rudd.
Eileen became actively involved in community service in Rudd
by serving on the Rudd City Council as its mayor pro tem, Rudd
Betterment Council and a faithful member of the Rudd United Methodist
Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Circle, member of
the Memorial committee and church treasurer.
She will be remembered as one who enjoyed life and loved her
children and grandchildren. Eileen enjoyed reading mystery books,
crossword puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune, Nickels and crafts.
Living family members include three sons, Charles Russell and
his wife, Sharon Barry, of Cypress, Texas, Richard Allan Barry
of Rudd, and Larry Raymond of Waukon; nine grandchildren, Kristine,
Stephanie, Ronald, Joe, Paul, Roberta, Mike, Larry and Joseph;
four great-grandchildren, Seth, Caitlin, Breann, and Jennifer;
three sisters, Betty and John Hayungs of Rudd, Alice Franklin
of Waterloo, Ruth and Gene Viers of Greene; and one brother,
Walter ``Bud'' and Modine Raymond of Kingman, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May
30, 1995; her daughter, Susan Kay Campbell, on Nov. 5, 1995;
and a son, Kenneth Raymond, in 1986.

Ferne Knowles was born Oct. 3, 1924, in Oakland Township in
Franklin County, a daughter of Fay and Veva Wells Walton.
She was married to Harold K. Knowles on July 15, 1947, at Mason
City.
She was a 1941 graduate of Popejoy High School and 1972 graduate
of U.N.I. in Cedar Falls. She had been employed as a teacher
of Franklin County, Williams and Iowa Falls Schools. She had
wintered in Texas.
She was a member of Alden United Methodist Church and Faith
Circle and was a 4-H leader, a Sunday school teacher and involved
in Bible study.
She is survived by two daughters, Arlys Bernard and husband,
David, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Larie Knowles of Clear Lake;
one son, Marlyn Knowles and his wife, Alice, of Bellevue, Neb.;
two grandchildren, Michelle and Mathew; three brothers, Wilmer
Walton of Sheffield, Eldon Walton of Des Moines, and Stanley
Walton of Belle Plaine, Minn.; and one sister, Norma Lawson of
Rockwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in
December 1966.
