Leona H. Benson

CLEAR LAKE



Mrs. Leona H. Benson, 97, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Oct.

8, 1996) at the Americana Care Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical

Free Church, with Pastor Randy Vaage and Pastor Dave Van Wingerden

officiating.



Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dayton

Cemetery, Dayton, Iowa.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one

hour before services at the church.



The family suggests memorials to the Leona H. Benson Memorial

Fund.



Leona was born Dec. 5, 1898, in Pilot Mound,  the daughter of

Alfred and Amelia (Nelson) Bygel. She graduated from Dayton High

School in 1914.



Leona worked as a clerk in a grocery store in Dayton until her

marriage to Carl Benson on Dec. 31, 1923, in Dayton.



They farmed northeast of Dayton until 1956 when they moved into

Dayton to live. She was a cook for Dayton School system for many

years.



Leona played the organ for churches from her early teen years

until the age of 80.  She played at the Methodist Church in Dayton

for over 10 years.



Leona moved to Clear Lake to live in the early 1980s.



Leona loved her church, family and watching the Cubs.



She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake.



Leona is survived by a daughter, Irene L. Sandell of Prescott,

Ariz.; a son, Carl R. ``Dick'' Benson of Knoxville; and son-in-law,

John ``Bob'' Gabrielson, of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren, Craig

Benson, Curtis Benson, Carla Klootwyk, Linda Vaage, Lance Gabrielson,

Lonnie Gabrielson, Randy Rhoades, Jon Rhoades, Sandra Rhoades,

Dean Sandell, Betty Jo Lyle, David Sandell and Dale Sandell;

21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; and

a very special friend, Rosemary Hall of Mesa, Ariz.



Those greeting her in heaven are her parents, Alfred and Amelia

Bygel; husband, Carl Benson; and two daughters, Mary Gabrielson

and Carol Rhoades.

Hazel Momyer, 89, of 2958 260th St., Ventura, died Thursday

(Oct. 10, 1996) at home.

Ralph R. Wermersen

BRITT



Ralph R. Wermersen, 83, of Britt, died Thursday (Oct. 10, 1996)

at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran

Church, with the Rev. James A. Mattson officiating. Burial will

be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 178 First Ave S.W.



Ralph Rector Wermersen was born Nov. 30, 1912, on a farm near

Corwith, the son of John and Mabel (Rector) Wermersen.



He graduated from Britt High School in 1932.



On March 23, 1941, he married Alma Tegtmeyer at First Lutheran

Church, Britt. They raised two children, Dennis and Elaine.



They farmed near Corwith until 1945, when they moved northeast

of Wesley.



In 1980 they retired from farming and moved into Britt.



He enjoyed his family and fishing.



He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Britt, where he had

served on the church council. He was a former director for the

Orthel Township schools.



He is survived by a son, Dennis Wermersen of Des Moines; a daughter,

Elaine Thome and her husband, Dean, of Stacyville; a granddaughter,

Trena Thome of Stacyville; three stepgrandchildren, Steve Thome

and his wife, Bethanie; Bonnie Kirtz and her husand, David, and

Darrel Thome and his wife, Elaine; two stepgreat-grandchildren,

Coty Kirtz and Hunter Thome; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles `Chuck' O'Harrow

ROCKWELL



Charles ``Chuck'' O'Harrow, 82, of 409 Fourth St. S.,  died

Friday (Oct. 11, 1996) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.



Funeral services are tentatively set for Monday, Oct. 14, at

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell.

Norman L. Erickson

TAMPA, 



Norman L. Erickson, 77, of Tampa, died Sunday (Oct. 6, 1996)

at his home.



Memorial services were held Thursday, Oct. 10, 1996, at the

Northeast Methodist Church in Tampa.



Norman was born July 27, 1919, at Hanlontown, Iowa, the son

of Edward and Bessie Erickson.



Survivors include his wife, Micki; son, Norman Jr.; daughter,

Natalie; three grandchildren, all of Tampa; and a sister, Lucille

Halverson of Mason City, Iowa.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ernest.

Peter J. Paulsen

CLARION



Peter J. Paulsen, 75, of Clarion, died Thursday (Oct. 10, 1996)

at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United

Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stuart Brantley officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, with military honors by

the Clarion American Legion and the Clarion VFW.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Willim

Funeral Home.



Peter J. Paulsen was born July 28, 1921, at Hayfield.



Survivors include his wife, Anna, of Clarion; one daughter,

Carolyn Wiele of Chariton; three sons, Roger of Garner; Ron of

Macomb, Ill., and Russ of Sandy, Utah; 11 grandchildren; one

great-grandchild; and one sister, Joyce Kearns of Eugene, Ore.



He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Charlotte Nelson

BRITT



Charlotte Nelson, 82, of Britt, died Friday (Oct. 11, 1996)

at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Burial

will be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 178 First Ave S.W.



Memorials may be directed to the Hancock County Memorial Hospital

Building Fund and/or the United Methodist Church.



Charlotte Nelson, the daughter of Floyd A. and Ora (Barracks)

Dunlap, was born March 27, 1914, at Corwith.



She received her education and graduated from the Corwith Community

Schools.



On Sept. 16, 1933, she was married to Otto H. Cook at the Little

Brown Church in Nashua. To this marriage, three daughters were

born, Shirley, Judith and Karen.



They farmed near Mason City until Otto's death in April of 1951,

at which time she moved to Britt to be near family members in

Corwith.



She was employed over the years by the Federated Store, Tande's

International Harvestor and Kerns Implement.



On Oct. 8, 1953, she was married to Marvin J. Nelson at Hampton.



In 1965, Charlotte and Marvin became co-managers of Forest City

Granite Works in Forest City, which they operated until retiring

in January of 1986.



After Marvin's death, Nov. 1, 1993, Charlotte continued to live

in Britt.



She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, friends, baking and golfing.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Miriam Circle,

P.E.O. Chapter GF, Britt Women's Club and the Women's Golf Association.



She is survived by her three daughters, Shirley Smidt and her

husband, Lawrence, of Britt; Judy Studer and her husband, Kermit,

of Clear Lake, and Karen Dillon and her special friend, Al Hughes

of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and

a sister, Geraldine Stout of Belmond.



She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Otto Cook and

Marvin Nelson; two grandchildren, Kristine Lea Dillon and James

Paul Dillon; her parents; and two brothers, Wayne Dunlap and

Lynn Dunlap.

Dorothy Zimmerman

Dorothy Zimmerman, 92, of Sheffield, died Friday (Oct. 11, 1996)

at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First

Baptist Church, with Pastor Steve Hollingsworth officiating.

Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grarup

Funeral Home.



Dorothea Lillie Berends Zimmerman was born on June 24, 1904,

in Cartersville, to Joseph Bernard Berends and Minnie Bertha

Pauline Raatz Berends.



She grew up in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Hampton, graduating

from  Hampton High School in 1923.



She was a member of the Every Girl Club, Commercial Club, Basketball

Team `21, `22, `23, on the annual staff in 1923, and in the class

play in 1923.



After high school, she worked in Hampton for the Ferris Nursery,

Hampton State Bank and Autzbaugh Motors in the office.



In later years, she worked at the Sheffield School as a secretary

to the superintendent.



Dorothy was married to David Carl Zimmerman in 1930 and they

resided in Sheffield most of their years together.



After the passing of her husband and son in 1956 and 1958, she

moved to Hampton, where she resided with her mother, brother

and two uncles.



In later years, she moved back to Sheffield where she resided

until May of 1994, when she became a resident of the Sheffield

Care Center.



Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sheffield,

the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Matron B Club, and the

Cemetery Society, also in Sheffield.



She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life, a daughter,

Carla Lee Plagge and her husband, Dallas, of Sheffield; a son,

Larry and his wife, Linda, of Mason City; five grandchildren,

Gigi Bohach and her husband, Kevin; Lance Plagge and his wife,

Juli;, Parrish Plagge and his wife, Lisa; Douglas Zimmerman and

his wife, Karen; and Michael and his wife, Heather; 12 great-grandchildren,

McClain,  Davison, Jill, Jennifer, Jared, Tyler, Austin, Nathaniel,

Payton, Ryan, Brittany and David; and one sister, Dalores Mott

and her husband, Delos, of Hampton.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son,

two sisters and one brother.

Engelard Steenhard

MESERVEY



Engelard Steenhard, 80, of Meservey, died Thursday (Oct. 10,

1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First

Reformed Church of Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating.

Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grarup

Funeral Home.



Engelard Steenhard was born on June 19, 1916, near Chapin on

the family farm, the son of Joe and Gesina (Dannen) Steenhard.



He attended country school in the rural area outside of Chapin.



Following school, he started farming for various people in the

area, while farming and living with the Hemme Hemmes family.



He was united in marriage to Phyllis Koenen on March 26, 1941,

at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield.



They made their home farming in the North Iowa area before settling

north of Meservey where they farmed a total of 24 years.



In 1967, they moved into Meservey and he started working for

ACCO Seeds in Belmond before working for the Winnebago Industries

in Forest City, retiring in 1981.



Engelard enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, fishing and playing

cards.



He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Meservey; one daughter,

Barbara Kropp and her husband, Jerry, of Garner; five sons, Vernon

and his wife, Carol of Olathe, Kan.; Alan and his wife, Ann,

of Mason City; Wayne and his wife, Donna, of Mason City; Warren

and his wife, Dawn, of Mason City, and Mark and his wife, Debra,

of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Julie Rains and her husband,

Wes; Scott Steenhard; Brenda Anderson and her husband, Grant;

Shelby Steenhard, and Haylee Steenhard; two great-grandchildren,

Erica and Abby Rains; one sister, Florence Maise of Latimer;

three brothers, Klaas Steenhard and his wife, Marjorie, of Belmond;

John and his wife, Evelyn, of Mason City, and George and his

wife, Merle, of Rockwell; and two sisters-in-law, Molly Steenhard

of Hampton, and Isabel Steenhard of Waverly.



He was preceded in death by his parents. one infant son, two

grandchildren and two brothers.

Lee ``Junior'' Wever, 72, of Hampton, died Thursday (Oct. 10,

1996) at the Hampton Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sietsema

Vogel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating.

Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service on

Monday at the funeral home.



Lee ``Junior'' Wever was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Hampton.



Survivors include his sister, Frances Wever of Hampton.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Marifrances B. Graves

CLEAR LAKE



Marifrances B. Graves, 80, of Richmond, Ky., formerly of Clear

Lake, died Wednesday (Oct. 9, 1996) in Winchester, Ky.



Graveside services will be held at noon Monday at the Clear

Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Wallace officiating.



Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge

of arrangements.



Marifrances was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Clear Lake, the daughter

of John H. and Marian (Winnie) Peterson.



She grew up in the Clear Lake area and later lived on a farm

near Ventura.



She then moved to Des Moines and California, before residing

in Kentucky.



Marifrances was a retired medical assistant as well as a housewife.



Marifrances is survived by her husband, John Robert Graves,

of Richmond, Ky.; two sons, James Bellamy of Mount Vernon, and

Scott Bellamy of California; three grandchildren; and five great-

grandchildren.

Melvin C. Knapp

CHARLES CITY



Melvin C. Knapp, 88, formerly of 901 Court St., died Friday

(Oct. 11, 1996) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Guest Home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser

Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Larry Vallery of

Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in

Sunnyside Memory Gardens near Charles City.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral

home, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

and from 9 a.m. Monday until time of services.



Melvin Charles Knapp was born Sept. 8, 1908, in Plymouth County.



Survivors include two daughters, B. Evelyn Backer of Waterloo,

and Doris Hibner of Charles City; one son, Carl Knapp of Charles

City; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-

grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Goodwin of Sun City, Ariz.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two grandchildren,

one great-grandchild and a sister, Bernice.

Herbert L. Garlock

CLEAR LAKE



Herbert L. Garlock Sr., 84, of 301 25th Ave. S., died Thursday

(Oct. 10, 1996) at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Larry

Squiers of the Christian Church of Clear Lake officiating. Interment

will be in the Clear Lake  Cemetery with military honors by the

Clear Lake VFW.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral

home and one hour prior to services on Monday.



Herbert was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Clear Lake Township on a

farm north of Clear Lake, the son of Sherman and Christine (Nasheim)

Garlock.



He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1931.



He operated a portable roller skating tent rink in North Iowa

and later moved to Oklahoma City and ran a skating rink in the

municipal auditorium.



He married Dorothy Phillips on March 17, 1940.



Herbert entered the Navy during World War II and was a Seabee

and served as a cook and carpenter. He served in the South Pacific.



Following the service, he moved back to Oklahoma City where

he built the Rocket Skating Club and operated it until moving

back to Clear Lake in 1955.



He owned and operated Herb's Shell Services on First Avenue

South and South Fourth Street until his retirement in 1977.



Herbert enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and also enjoyed

cooking for his family from old Navy cookbooks.



He was a member of the Clear Lake VFW and the Clear Lake American

Legion.



Herbert is survived by his wife, Dorothy Garlock of Clear Lake;

a son, Herbert Garlock Jr. of Clear Lake; a daughter, Lindy Lemon

of Mason City; two grandchildren, Adam Mix and Amos Mix; and

two brothers, Donald and Myron Garlock, both of Clear Lake.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one

brother.

Hazel R. Momyer

VENTURA 



Hazel R. Momyer, 89, of 2958 260th St., Ventura, died Thursday

(Oct. 10, 1996) at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ventura

United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gobeli and the Rev.

David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, officiating.

Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.



Hazel was born on the family farm northeast of Ventura, on Oct.

17, 1906, the daughter of John Henry and Mary (Paul) Bokelman.



She graduated from Ventura High School in 1925.



She continued to live on the farm until her marriage to Charles

Momyer on Aug. 25, 1928, in Chariton, and then moved to her present

home where she had lived ever since.



Hazel's children were her life; she enjoyed cooking for them

and raising flowers. Hazel worked part time in various Clear

Lake restaurants up to the age of 72.



She was a member of Northside Jolly Club, Ventura.



Hazel is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Hanna and her husband,

Robert, of Mason City, and Marilyn Sayles and her husband, Robert,

of Austin, Minn.; one son, Ray Momyer and his wife, Ellen, of

Mason City; four grandchildren, Steven R. Sayles of Freemont,

Calif.; Kathryn Hanna of Boulder, Colo.; Sandy King and Michael

Momyer, both of Mason City; four great-grandchildren, Charles

Hanna of Ames; Christopher Kirschbaum of Burchinal; and Wesley

King and Taylor King, both of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles,

in 1982; two brothers, Lyle and Hollis Bokelman; four sisters,

Verna Hammond, Elsie Conibear, Mayme Fortune and an infant sister;

and three grandchildren, Suzanne Sayles, John Charles Sayles

and Douglas Hanna.

Charles `Chuck' O'Harrow

ROCKWELL 



Charles ``Chuck'' O'Harrow, 82, of 409 Fourth St., died Friday

(Oct. 11, 1996) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.



Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart

Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer and the Rev. Dennis

Cahill officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.



Visitation will be at 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart

Parish Center, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural prayer service.



Memorials may be given to the Charles O'Harrow Memorial Fund.



Charles O'Harrow was born Dec. 12, 1913, in Cerro Gordo County,

to Fred and Carrie (Birdsell) O'Harrow.  He graduated from Mason

City High School.  On Sept. 7, 1938, he was united in marriage

to Mary Backer of Dougherty at St. Patrick's Catholic Church

in Dougherty.  They lived on the O'Harrow farm until 1979 when

they retired and moved to Rockwell.



Charles enjoyed farming his land, playing cards with his friends

and playing and watching baseball.  He was a member of Sacred

Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell.



He is survived by one daughter, Sally Becker and her husband,

Dale, of Mason City; one son, Fred O'Harrow of Eagan, Minn.;

two sisters, Mrs. Gene Crowell of Rockford, and Mrs. Marian Cahill

of Rockwell; a special nephew and his wife, John and Sandy Warner

of East Dubuque; four grandchildren, Debra, Angie, Colleen and

Kevin; and two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Sheena.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; one

sister, Marge; and one granddaughter, Kim O'Harrow.

Martha Beenken

TITONKA 



Martha Beenken, 85, of Titonka, died Saturday (Oct. 12, 1996)

at the Titonka Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ramsey

Reformed Church with the Rev. Dennis Redeker officiating.  Burial

will be held in the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Garry-Roberts-

Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.



Martha Beenken was born Dec. 6, 1910, at rural Titonka.



Survivors include two daughters, LaVonne Miksell of Des Moines

and Mary Noftsger of Truro; two sons, Harley Beenken of Titonka

and Lawrence Beenken of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren; two

brothers, Heiko Boekelman of Titonka and Robert Boekelman of

Titonka; and one sister, Gertrude Sunken of Titonka.



She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, one son

and one brother.

Betty Mae Brood

CLEAR LAKE 



Mrs. Betty Mae Brood, 67, of 1208 Seventh Place N.,  died Saturday

(Oct. 12, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.  Interment

will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Swaledale.



Visitation begins after 4 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial

Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.



The family suggests memorials to the Betty Mae Brood Memorial

Fund.



Betty was born in Ventura, the daughter of Roy and Martha (Paulsen)

Rowe.  She graduated from Swaledale High School in 1948.



Betty married Hans ``Jim'' Brood on Feb. 20, 1949, in Thornton.

 They lived in the Swaledale area until 1958 they then moved

to Clear Lake.  They moved back to Swaledale in 1972 and then

back to Clear Lake in 1985.  She worked at E.F. Johnson in Clear

Lake and later IMI Cornelius in Mason City until her retirement

in 1992.



Betty enjoyed having her children and grandchildren around her

and collecting dog figurines.  She was a member of Clear Lake

United Methodist Church and a life member of Clear Lake VFW Auxiliary.



Betty is survived by her husband, Hans ``Jim'' Brood of Clear

Lake; mother, Martha Paulsen of Clear Lake; seven children, Marilyn

``Kay'' Howe of Blue Springs, Mo.; Linda Brood of Clear Lake;

Jake Brood and his wife, Theresa, of Swaledale, Sandy Brood of

Clear Lake; Pam Huff and her husband, Fred, of Mason City; Sherry

Kingston of Joice, and Jamie Eliason and her husband, Jeff, of

Kanawha; one sister, Norma Jean Kofoed of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren;

and two great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her father and one infant son,

John.

Roger Merlyn Johnson was born April 21, 1940, in Winnebago County.

Minn.; and five brothers, Larry Anderson of Franklin, Ky.; Duane

Douglas LeRoy Church, 62, passed away on Friday (Oct. 11, 1996)

at Stewart Memorial Hospital, Lake City.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the

Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View with burial in the

Ferguson Cemetery, Lake View.



Visitation is at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Tuesday with

the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  There will be Masonic

services at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Tuesday.



Douglas LeRoy Church was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Mason City to

Albert and Leota (Shear) Church. He graduated from Sheldon High

School then served two years in the Army.  He received a BA from

Yankton College, Yankton, S.D. and post graduate hours from Drake

University and the University of South Dakota.



On Aug. 18, 1957, he married Carolyn Holmgren at Rapid City,

S.D.  They have lived in Lake View since 1973.



Douglas was employed by Farmland Insurance Company, Des Moines.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge.  He enjoyed fishing and golfing.



Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, of Lake View; one son,

Randal and wife, Kim, of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Renese

and David Callahan of Manson, and Rhonda Church of Minneapolis,

Minn.; four grandchildren, Ryan and Hannah of Dallas, Texas,

and Marlorie and Matthew of Manson; his mother, Leota Church,

of Mason City; two brothers, Allan of Minneapolis, Minn., and

Bruce of Toledo; and one sister, Susan Culhane of Omaha, Neb.

Betty Mae Brood

Mrs. Betty Mae Brood, 67, of 1208 Seventh Place N.,  died Saturday

(Oct. 12, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.  Interment

will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.



Visitation begins after 4 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial

Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.



The family suggests memorials to the Betty Mae Brood Memorial

Fund.



Betty was born in Ventura, the daughter of Roy and Martha (Paulsen)

Rowe.  She graduated from Swaledale High School in 1948.



Betty married Hans ``Jim'' Brood on Feb. 20, 1949, in Thornton.

They lived in the Swaledale area until 1958 when they moved

to Clear Lake.  They moved back to Swaledale in 1972 and then

back to Clear Lake in 1985.  She worked at E.F. Johnson in Clear

Lake and later IMI Cornelius in Mason City until her retirement

in 1992.



Betty enjoyed having her children and grandchildren around her

and collecting dog figurines.  She was a member of Clear Lake

United Methodist Church and a life member of Clear Lake VFW Auxiliary.



Betty is survived by her husband, Hans ``Jim'' Brood of Clear

Lake; mother, Martha Paulsen of Clear Lake; seven children, Marilyn

``Kay'' Howe of Blue Springs, Mo., Linda Brood of Clear Lake,

Jack Brood and his wife, Theresa, of Swaledale, Sandy Brood of

Clear Lake, Pam Huff and her husband, Fred, of Mason City, Sherry

Kingston and husband, Danny, of Joice, and Jamie Eliason and

her husband, Jeff, of Kanawha; one sister, Norma Jean Kofoed

of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her father and one infant son,

John.

Leo L. Westfall, 75, of 1624 N. Carolina Place, died Friday

(Oct. 11, 1996) at his home after a brief illness.



The body was cremated.  A memorial service will be held at 6

p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

1309 South Kentucky Ave.  A meal will be served at the church

following the services.



Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge

of arrangements.



Leo L. Westfall was born Nov. 23, 1920, at rural Lawton, the

son of Granville Nash and Alice May (Eckert) Westfall. He attended

schools in Sioux City and South Sioux City, Neb., graduating

from South Sioux City in 1939.  He spent two years in CCC camps,

working near and around Humbolt and Dakota City.



He joined the Army in May 1940, and was assigned to the 3469th

Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company, gaining the grade of Tech

5.  He served with honor as a Mechanic Automotive Wheel Vehicle

965 ordnance man in the New Guinea-Bismarck Archipelago with

Co. 33, wd 45, from Oct. 12, 1942, until Oct. 8, 1945.  He was

awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the American Defense

Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.



Leo married Alice Loretta Bean on May 24, 1947, at South Sioux

City, Neb.



He worked at Cudahy Packing House from 1949 to 1954 and for

Armour Packing House from 1954 until 1983, first in Sioux City,

then in Omaha, and finally in Mason City, where he retired in

November of 1983.  He was a paper carrier for the Mason City

Globe-Gazette for several years where he prided himself on getting

his papers out before dawn.



Leo resided in Sioux City, Omaha, Neb., and Manly and moved

to Mason City in 1970, where he lived until his death.



Leo's hobby was people.  He enjoyed making new acquaintances,

especially at Hy-Vee East, getting to know them, and joking with

them whenever they met again.  He enjoyed having his children

and grandchildren come to visit him, and teasing his grandchildren

and the neighbor children.  Leo loved people.



Leo is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alice (Bean) Westfall

of Mason City; three sons, David Westfall and his special friend,

Lorel,  of Englewood, Colo., Roy Westfall and his wife, Dawn,

of Sugarland, Texas, and Jim Westfall of Lombard, Ill.; four

daughters, Julie Westfall of Mason City, Kathy Hegwar and her

husband, Steve, of Rosse, Jacky Funk and her husband, Carl, of

Chapin, and Barbara Jackson and her husband, Charles Richard

Jackson Jr., of rural Rockwell.



Leo had 22 grandchildren, David's daughter Michelle of Englewood,

Colo.; Stephen's daughters, Angel Parker and her husband, Clyde,

of Mason City and Susan Westfall of rural Hanlontown; Kathy's

children Laura, Adam and Allison Gregory and Larry Hegwar, all

of Rosse; Jacky's children, Carla, Augusta, Robert and William

Funk, all of Chapin; Barbara's children, Benjamin, Alicia, Richard,

Daniel, Elizabeth, Jacob and Matthew Jackson, all of rural Rockwell;

Roy's children, Katie Westfall of Dudley, N.C.., and Chloe, Tucker

and Emily Westfall of Sugarland, Texas; and one great-grandchild,

Michelle's daughter, Aspen Moe of Englewood, Colo.



Leo is also survived by one sister, Roberta (Les) Smithers of

Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Inez and

Rudy Di Manbro of Dover, N.H., Irene and Chuck Beatty of Portland,

Ore., and Betty and Steve Corey of Sioux City; brothers-in-law,

Bill and Connie Bean of South Sioux City, Neb., and Tom Bean

of Colo.; a former daughter-in-law, Nancy (Humphreys) Westfall

of Dudley, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren, Joe and Kari Hegwar of

Rosse; and a stepgreat grandson, Kyle Hegwar of Rosse.



He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stephen; a son-in-law,

Pat Gregory; and four brothers, Frank, Calvin, Orville and Walter

Westfall.

Mary was born on Aug. 16, 1922, the daughter of Louis and Stella

(Schaefer) Brown in Portsmouth, Ohio. Upon graduating from high

school, she attended St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn. She

later graduated from there and was very proud of that fact.



On Feb. 19, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to J. Paul Cahalan.



After being married, the couple moved to the Cartersville and

Mason City areas where they farmed and raised their family.



Mary loved her family and was very interested in all the activities

that they were in.



She also enjoyed reading and doing some hand crafts.



Mary volunteered many hours at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.



She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rose-Leo Circle,

the Bath Homemakers and the Owen Center Club.



Mary is survived by one daughter, Pauline Cahalan of Cedar Hill,

Texas; four sons, John and his wife, Dianne of Rockwell; Tom

of Bryan, Texas; David and his wife, Kathy, of Clearwater, Fla.,

and Dan and his wife, Kristi, of Lolo, Mont.; one sister, Ann

(Brown) Hesselton of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, the Rev. F.L.

Brown C.S.C. of Notre Dame, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Bill, Maria,

Michelle, Tim, Shayne, Keeli, Ian, Mari and Conor Cahalan; and

one great-grandson, Adam Cahalan.

Alva Sibert was born in Williams.



The Siberts lived in Mason City from the 1940s to 1975. He lived

in Belmond before moving to the Mason City area.



Alva was employed at Armour & Company in Mason City for 30-plus

years, retiring in 1973.



In 1975, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and lived there until

1990 when they moved to West Des Moines.



He was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church.



He is survived by his wife, Celia Sibert of West Des Moines;

two sons, Dennis Sibert of West Des Moines, and Arlon Sibert

of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Carol Lievrouw of Arlington,

Texas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one great-

great-grandchild; and one sister, Blanche Jergensen of Clarion.

Donald A. Friesleben was born on Friday, Aug. 8, 1924, in Alexander,

to Christal and Emma (Ludtke) Friesleben. He was 2 years old

when they moved to a farm east of Belmond.



Don was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church.

He attended country school and graduated from Belmond High School

in 1942.



Don was united in marriage to Wilma Johnson on Jan. 8, 1949,

at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.



 Don drove school bus for several years, worked for the Andrew

Funeral Home for a number of years and with the Tenold Funeral

Home for 14 years.



In 1958 Don was chosen by the Jaycees as ``Belmond's Outstanding

Young Farmer.''



Don was a member of the Belmond Country Club, which he had served

as a board member and president for a term. Don also was a member

of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving his church in many capacities,

including the choir.



He farmed all his life until he retired in 1992. He and Wilma

purchased a home and moved to Belmond in 1994.



He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Belmond; his sister, Marilyn

Grube and her husband, Clair, of Edmonds, Wash.; one nephew,

Marty Grube and his wife, Emma; and one grandniece, Megan Grube.



Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Leo is also survived by one sister, Roberta (Les) Smithers of

Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Inez and

Rudy Di Mambro of Dover, N.H., Irene and Chuck Beatty of Portland,

Ore., and Betty and Steve Corey of Sioux City; brothers-in-law,

Bill and Connie Bean of South Sioux City, Neb., and Tom Bean

of Colorado.; a former daughter-in-law, Nancy (Humphreys) Westfall

of Dudley, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren, Joe and Kari Hegwer of

Rosse; and a stepgreat- grandson, Kyle Hegwer of Rosse.
