     Dorothy Ruth (Lee) Francis, 92, of 5851 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at the age of 92 years, two months and 29 days.
    A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from noon - 2 p.m.at the Best Western Holiday Lodge, Highway 18 E., Clear Lake, in the Veranda Room, where the family will greet friends to share memories and have refreshments.  A private memorial service was held at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. 
    Family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa or I.O.O. F Home in Mason City.
      She was born June 10, 1916 at Cincinnati, Iowa, the daughter of Byron Frank and Beulah Merle (Sloan) Lee.
     She graduated from high school at Centerville, Iowa.
     She married Harley Marlow Francis June 8, 1935 at Unionville, Mo. The couple lived for a time in Centerville, moving to the Riceville and Orchard, Iowa areas where they farmed. They moved to a farm in Lincoln Township, Cerro Gordo County in the early 1950s.
     After retiring from the farm, she worked for 22 years at Easter’s Super Value in Clear Lake, where she met many people. She became well-known in the community due to her outgoing and friendly personality. Following her retirement from Easter’s she enjoyed making and giving away jams and jellies to her many friends.
     She enjoyed fishing and spent many vacations with her husband and members of her family and friends at Minnesota’s Lake Kabetogama.   
     She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte (Samuel) Swartz and Peggy (Ron) Brinkman, both of Clear Lake; and two sons, Frank (Connie) of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Thomas. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.   
   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, John, of Centerville; a daughter, Emma; and two great-granddaughters.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Leo Micajah Baker, 83, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died surrounded by his family on Sept. 11, 2008 at University of Iowa Hospitals after suffering a stroke.  He was a resident of Waterloo, Iowa for many years and recently moved back from Sun City, Arizona.
    Leo was born April 28, 1925 in Muscatine, Iowa to Joseph and Nellore (Lee) Baker and raised by Cynthia (Wagner) Lee.  He married Ann Phillips on June 26, 1949 in Muscatine.
    Leo graduated from Muscatine High School and graduated with honors from the University of Iowa.  He received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Iowa Law School in 1952. Leo served in the Army during WWII.  He was a practicing attorney for a number of years in Cedar Falls.  One of his favorite clients was UNI.  He later was employed by General Growth Properties. He was actively involved in numerous civic and community organizations.  He was very active in the Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, Az.
    He is survived by his wife, Ann; three sons and their spouses, David L. Baker (Janet), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jeffrey P. Baker (Jackie), Pewaukee, Wis., and Scott A. Baker, (Caihong), Houston, Texas.  He is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth and Catherine Baker of Cedar Rapids, Jamie and Whitney Baker of Pewaukee, and William Baker of Houston.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; grandmother; and a brother, Joseph.
    A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 22, 1:30 pm., at Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church, 2015 Rainbow Drive, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.

    Clara J. Muff, 74, of Garner, Iowa died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at her home.
    Funeral services were held Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Brian Dellaert and the Rev. Henry Huber officiating.  Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Opportunity Village or Hospice of North Iowa.
    Clara Jean Muff, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Tachovsky) Pospisil, was born Oct. 31, 1933, at Newman Grove, Neb.  Her mother died after giving birth to Clara.  She was then raised by her uncle and aunt, Adolph and Agnes Chrastil.  She attended country school near Hallam and graduated from Wilbur High School in 1952.  On Jan. 14, 1953, she was married to Ben W. Muff at Wilbur, Neb.  They lived in Crete, Neb. until 1955, when they moved to Iowa where they farmed and raised their family north of Ventura.  In 1998, they moved into Garner.  Clara was especially  proud of her children, grandchildren and  Czech heritage.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, flower gardening, playing the accordion and cooking, especially baking kolaches. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
    Clara is survived by her husband, Ben, of Garner; four children, Christine Muff of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, Dan (June) Muff of Garner, Deb (Stub) Cash of Clear Lake and Denice (Jeff) Austin of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Chris) Klostermann and their two children, Sage and Abby, Ann (Tim) Urban, Andy (Hayley) Muff, Adam Cash, Libby Cash (fiance, Nick Schultz) and their daughter, Jaden, Missy Cash and Jacob Austin; four sisters, Shirley (Virgil) Bickley of Chino, Calif., Betty (John) Zelenka of Milligan, Neb., Carolyn Prazak of Lincoln, Neb. and Janet Jonson of Lincoln; and a brother, John (Janet) Chrastil of Hallam, Neb.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.

    Lois Maxine Hauge, 83, of Mason City, Iowa, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at her home.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City with the Rev. Steve Palo officiating.  Burial was in the Ventura Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lois Maxine Hauge Memorial Fund for supporting the maintenance on the Ventura cemetery wall, in care of Sandra Lovejoy, 13976 210th Street, Mason City, Iowa 50401.
    Lois Maxine Kaster was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Ventura, the daughter of Charles and Winnie (Burkholder) Kaster. Lois was baptized and confirmed with the Trinity Lutheran Church.  She was raised and attended school in Ventura.  Lois was united in marriage to Rennie Quandt and to this union a daughter was born.  Lois was united in marriage to Truman Hauge on Nov. 4, 1950.  Together Truman and Lois managed the Mason City Wilbert Burial Vault Company for numerous years.
    Lois enjoyed taking fishing trips with Truman and traveling in their motor home.  They enjoyed trips to Arizona in the winter and visiting family.  Lois and Truman also had good memories of their snowmobile rides and motorcycle rides on their “bonebuster bikes.”  She loved red roses, playing cards and word search puzzles. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.  Lois also enjoyed eating her Wendy’s at East Park in Mason City where she was entertained by listening to the geese and ducks.  One of her favorite television shows was “America’s Funniest Videos.”  She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Lois will be forever remembered for opening her home up for Bible study, worship and AA group meetings.  After the death of her husband, Truman, her new companion was her poodle, Tiny.
    Lois is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lovejoy, Mason City; “surrogate son” Darrell (Kathy) Cobeen, Clear Lake; grandchildren, Roxane (Daniel) Murphy, Natalie (Mandume Kerina) Lovejoy, Tim (Melinda) Lovejoy and Toni Lovejoy; great-grandchildren, Angel (Timothy) Dietrich, Joshua Bradley, Major Mosley, Elisha Lovejoy, India Lovejoy, Izea Lovejoy, T.J. Lovejoy, Aspen Lovejoy, J.D. Murphy, Truman Murphy, Natalia Lovejoy and Sara Kerina; great-great-grandchildren, Luke Bradley, Major Mosley, Timothy Dietrich II and Alexa Bradley, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Lois is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Truman; three sisters and seven brothers.
    Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

    Muriel ‘Annie’ Dirks, 61, of Clear Lake, formerly of Thornton, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services were held Friday, Sept. 19, at First United Methodist Church, Thornton with Pastor Rose Calderon-Khan presiding. Interment will be at a later date at Meservey Cemetery, Meservey, Iowa.
     Muriel Ann ‘Annie’ Dirks was born April 8, 1947 at Tama, Iowa, a daughter of Lawrence and Reva (Estel) Marlow. She attended schools in Tama and Mason City, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Jerry Allen Dirks on Aug. 20, 1966 at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. They raised their family in Thornton.
    Annie worked as a waitress and bartender at the Shady Beach in Clear Lake and the tavern in Thornton for many years. In 2006 Annie moved to Clear Lake where she lived at Apple Valley Assisted Living and spent the past two months as a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
    Annie was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Thornton. She enjoyed spending her time dancing and doing crossword puzzles. She greatly enjoyed her time at Apple Valley but the best times for her were those spent with her grandchildren.
    Annie is survived by her children and their families: Todd (Violeta) Dirks and their children, Veronica and her son, Devon; Tim and John; Chris Dirks (Todd Ouverson) and her son, Braiden; Jeremy (Katie) Dirks and their son, Matthew; sisters and brothers, Maureen (Harlan) Leake, Mason City, Marjorie (Garry) Benson, Eldora, Iowa, James (Connie) Marlow, Charles City, Iowa, Jean (Gary) Conrad, Clear Lake; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Ron (Judy) Dirks, Meservey, Doris Dirks, Mason City, John (Cindy) Dirks, Mason City, Jim (Nancy) Dirks, Clear Lake, Karen (Frank) Uhde, Thornton. She is the aunt of 22 and the great aunt of 46.
    Muriel Ann Dirks is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry, in 1992; brothers-in-law, Bob and Louis Dirks; nephew, Scotty Dirks and niece, Jennifer Hamand.

    Jay Russell Ouverson, 71, of Clear Lake, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 of a brain tumor diagnosed in September 2007.   Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
    Jay Russell Ouverson was born Aug. 15, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa, son of Leonard (Ding) and Ellen Mae (Westover) Ouverson.  He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1955 and farmed with his father.  He joined the Air Force in February 1957 and was discharged in January 1963 in Empire, Mich. where he met his wife, Marty.  He served in Sado Shima, Japan during his service.  He married Marty Lemen on June 17, 1961 in Traverse City, Mich.  They moved back to Clear Lake briefly, then moved to Mason City where he worked at Arnold Motor Supply as a parts man and at the Globe Gazette as an advertising salesman.  He joined Mid America Publishing and was transferred to Spencer, Estherville, and Jefferson, Iowa.  When the paper changed hands Jay worked at the Bee and Herald in Jefferson.  Then they moved to Webster City, Iowa where he worked for the Freeman Journal, PSI and Lambi Chevrolet until he retired in 2002 and moved to Clear Lake.  He helped Dennis Preston on his farm until last fall when he became ill. Jay enjoyed his family and grandchildren the most.  He loved watching the NASCAR races.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on several committees.  He taught ALPHA classes several times at Asbury Methodist Church in Webster City and United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. He became certified as a Lay Leader which he was very proud of.  He was a director, along with his wife Marty, of Congregational Care at the church for the last five years.  He enjoyed calling on patients as he always was a “people” person.  They loved to camp in their motor home and spent the last five winters in Weslaco, Texas.  He was a long time member of Kiwanis in Jefferson and Webster City.
    Jay is survived by his mother, Ellen Mae Ouverson of Clear Lake; his wife of 47 years, Marty; three sons, Brian (Mary) from Stratford, Iowa and their children, Spencer Ouverson of Boone, Iowa, Emily Gallagher of Ames, Iowa, Cassie of Fort Dodge, Iowa, David, Dylan, and Mariah Trammell of Stratford, Todd of Clear Lake and his children, Stephanie and Casey Ouverson of Des Moines, Iowa, his fiancé, Chris Dirks and her son, Braiden, and Eric (Elizabeth) from Webster City, Iowa and their children, Emma and Erin.  He is also survived by his sister, Dianne, and brother-in-law, Marlin Miller of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, James Thomson and sister-in-law, Janet Thomson of Traverse City, Mich.; brother-in-law, Ted Lemen and sister-in-law, Cecile Lemen of Denver, Colo.; his aunt, Lucile Westover, Clear Lake, and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Ouverson.

    Gary A. Mestad, 62, of Garner, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at his home in Garner.
    Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 25 at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating.  Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
    Gary Allen Mestad, the son of Orval and Trina (Linne) Mestad, was born Feb. 14, 1946, at Mason City, Iowa.  He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1964.  He continued his education at NIACC in Mason City and graduated from Mankato State University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  On Aug. 15, 1970, he married Merikay Marth at First Methodist Church in Mason City.  That same year they moved to Garner where Gary began teaching fifth grade at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools.  The next year he moved to seventh and eighth grade social studies.  He earned his MSE in Education Administration - Secondary in 1997 at Drake University.  He enthusiastically coached both boys’ and girls’ middle school sports and varsity softball before retiring in 2001.  Gary took two softball teams to the state tournament.   Sports, especially coaching,  was a major part of his life.  Gary enjoyed collecting records and CD’s, going to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and listening to many kinds of music.  He was an avid Buddy Holly and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
    He is survived by his parents, Orval and Trina Mestad of Clear Lake; a brother, Curtis Mestad of Clear Lake; an uncle, Henry (Donna) Linne of Coralville, Iowa; and a cousin, Kathy Hanna of Boulder, Colo.
    Gary was preceded in death by a nephew, Adam Benish.

    Robert R. “Bob” Burns Jr., 81, of Mason City, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  Funeral Services were held Saturday, Sept. 27, at Faith Baptist Church, Mason City with Pastor Steven Cox of Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church and Pastor Jeff Dahlin of Praise Community Church.  Interment was held in Memorial Park Cemetery with Veterans Honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.  Memorials may be directed to the Robert R. Burns Jr. Memorial Fund in care of the family.
    Robert was born Jan. 3, 1927 in Elm Creek, Neb. the son of Robert R. Sr. and Pearl (Case) Burns.  He attended school in Brooklyn, Iowa and graduated from there in 1945.  He entered the Army in 1951 and served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1953.
    He was married to Joy Lathrop on April 14, 1962 in Kirksville, Mo. and to this union four children were born.  Bob worked as a land surveyor for the Iowa D.O.T. for over 30 years until his retirement.  After retirement Bob started his own private land surveying business which he ran until 1999.
    He enjoyed nature, bird watching, gardening, flowers, listening to southern gospel music and also playing board games.  He also liked camping with his family in his younger years and enjoyed traveling the country.  Bob cherished his family and the time he spent with them.  He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
    He is survived by his wife, Jo, of Mason City; children, Ginny Kruger and husband, Terry, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Vicki Hearn and husband, Keith, of Plymouth, Iowa, Robert G. Burns and wife, Martha, of Clear Lake and Randy Burns and wife, Tammy, of Rockwell, Iowa; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Norman Burns and wife, Maxine, of Brooklyn, Gerald Burns and wife, Mary, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Joanna Lasof and husband, Mark, of Vancouver, Wash.; mother-in-law, Della Brungardt and husband, Henry, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law; one great-grandson; two brothers; and two sisters.

    Robert L. (Bob) Sheeley, Clear Lake,  passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.  According to his wishes his body has been cremated.
     Bob was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, June 10, 1931.  He was a Korean Veteran with a V.F.W. Life Membership and member of Post 4868, Clear Lake.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake.
     Bob is survived by his children, Robert Sheeley Jr., Diane Vasgar and Deborah League.
     Bob has requested his ashes be sent to Resthaven Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Okla. and be placed in a reserved niche next to his wife of many years, Sue.

    Orval Alden Mestad, 88, 246 Wesley Dr., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Graveside services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating.   According to his wishes his body has been cremated.
    Memorials may be given to the Orval Mestad Memorial Fund in care of Curtis Mestad, 246 Wesley Drive, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428.
    Orval was born Sepºt. 2, 1920 in Spring Grove, Minn., the son of Olaf and Alma (Amundson) Mestad.  He married Trina Linne Nov. 9, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  Orval farmed in the Clear Lake area.  He also worked at Bestway Manufacturing in Clear Lake.  Orval enjoyed reading sports magazines and watching baseball and football on TV.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
    Orval is survived by his wife of 64 years, Trina Mestad, Clear Lake; son, Curtis Mestad, Clear Lake; sister, Marlys Davis and her husband, Dean, Arizona; special niece, Katherine Hanna, Boulder, Colo., and brother-in-law, Henry Jr. (Donna) Linne, Coralville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Josephine Linne, Mason City, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gary Mestad; two brothers, Carl Mestad and Herbert Mestad.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Evelyn M. Callanan, 88, Clear Lake, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, Iowa.  A funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.  Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.  Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the Hampton Health Care Center Alzheimers Unit #2,  the Alzheimer’s Association or Zion Lutheran Church.
    Evelyn Mathia was born Oct. 27, 1919 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Nels and Clara Marie (Elstad) Kittleson.  She graduated from Mason City High School.  Evelyn married Robert Callanan on Oct. 27, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.  They had three children, Patricia, Dennis and David.  She worked for a few years at Clear Lake Bakery and J.C. Penney.
    Evelyn enjoyed playing bridge, reading and loved sharing in the lives of her children’s families.  She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Progress Club, Altar Guild at Zion and the Prayer Chain.  She enjoyed her wonderful friendships shared in Mason City where they lived until 1957, at Alliant Energy, in Clear Lake and at Magic Valley Trailer Park in Weslaco, Texas where she and husband, Bob, wintered.
    Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Patricia J. Knutson and her husband, Dr. Eric, Newport, Ore., Dennis R. Callanan and his wife, Vivian, Park Ridge, Ill. and Dr. David G. Callanan and his wife, Kim, South Lake, Texas; grandchildren, Dr. Kelly J. Knutson, McComb, Ill., Jay A. Bergmann, Albany, Ore.; two sisters, Margaret Grell, Northwood, Iowa and Beverly Sturgis and her husband, Donald, Port Richey, Fla.; brothers, LaVerne “Bud” Kittleson and wife, Marylin, Linn Creek, Mo. and Alfred Kittleson and his wife, Mary, Delmar, Iowa;  sisters-in-law, Leona Currier, Ventura, and Dee Kittleson, Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.  A special mention and thanks to niece Linda Sue Graham, Forest City, Iowa.
    Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on Feb. 21, 2005; infant brother, Germaine; brother, Nels Kittleson; sisters, Carrie D. Johnson and Lorraine Kingsbury, all of Mason City.

    Elizabeth M. Trimble, 84, Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  A funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 6, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jim Allard officiating.  Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.  Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Oakwood Care Center in her name.
     Elizabeth was born May 1, 1924 in Gann Valley, S.D., the daughter of Oma and Nina (Huckins) Burgener.  She attended school in Mason City.  Elizabeth married Harold Trimble in 1941 and they lived in Mason City.  They moved to Clear Lake in 1955.  She was a homemaker for many years until her children were grown.  She then went to work at the Lake Café where she baked pies and cinnamon rolls until opening Betty’s Bakeshop in her home. There she enjoyed baking and decorating wedding and birthday cakes.  She also enjoyed crafts, playing cards and being with her family.
     Elizabeth is survived by five children, Nina Hepperly, Clear Lake, David Trimble and his wife, Cindy, Ogden, Utah, Teresa Thompson, Tempe, Az., Linda Oletzke and her husband, Michael, Fairmont, Minn., and Daniel Trimble and friend, Robynn, Noel, Mo.; 14 grandchildren, Scott Hepperly, Todd (Julie) Hepperly, Jon (friend, Amy) Hepperly, Brian Trimble, Jonathan Trimble, Leslie Trimble, Grant Thompson and his fiancé, Nicole, Courtney Thompson, Dylan (Ashley) Oletzke, Kelsey Oletzke, Phillip (Kristi) Trimble, Nicole Trimble, Shelby Trimble and Josh Rettig; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Gayle Burgener, California.
     Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Cheryl Rettig; two sisters, Helen Peshak and Rose Latham; and three brothers, Edward, Merlyn and Richard Burgener.
