    Dale Gustaf Newell, 90, of 2206 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, Iowa died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.
    Memorial services will be Friday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m., at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating.  Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Visitation will be one hour before the service. Family suggests memorials to Dale G. Newell Memorial Fund.
    Dale was born Dec. 16, 1917 in rural Pocahontas, Iowa on the family farm, the son of Loyal and Laura (Schreyer) Newell.
    The family moved five miles south of Laurens, Iowa.  He attended country school and then graduated from Laurens High School in 1935.
    Following high school he farmed with his father.  He married Roberta Marie Ford on Aug. 12, 1937 in Fonda, Iowa.  They moved to a farm north of Garner, Iowa in 1940 and continued to live there until 1959. They then moved to Clear Lake.
    He worked for various feed companies as a salesman in the area until he retired in 1977.  Following retirement they moved to El Reno, Okla. where they lived until 2002, and then moved to their present home in Mason City.
    Dale enjoyed the fishing trips to LaPonge, Canada, spending 24 winters in Texas, repairing bicycles, and barn dancing.  He was a grandpa to all little kids.
    He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City for over 61 years and was also a member of United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.
    He is survived by his wife  of 71 years, Roberta “Ford” Newell, Mason City; three children, Karolyn Hoffman, Clear Lake, Bonnye Reineke and her husband, Adolph, Forest City, Iowa and Sharon Newell, Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. 
    He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Kay E. Minkner, 64, of Craig, Neb., passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic. Burial was in the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, Iowa.  Condolences may be left at www.hockenberryfamilycare.com.
    Kay Elizabeth Minkner was born on Feb. 13, 1944, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Cleo and Thelma (Krumm) Minkner.
    She moved to Clear Lake, with her family early in childhood and lived there until graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1962.  Following high school she attended community college in Mason City, Iowa.
    Kay was married shortly after attending community college and lived in Oakland, Neb., as a homemaker, raising her three children.  While living in Oakland she worked for Oakland Memorial Hospital from 1988 to 1995.  Kay moved to Phoenix, Az., in 1995 with her son, Andrew.  While living in Phoenix she worked for Discover Financial Services as a fraud investigator.  She was recognized by the company for her achievements in fraud protection during her 12 years of employment.  In 2007 she moved to Craig, Neb., to be closer to her family members and worked for PayPal in Omaha, Neb.
    She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Phoenix.
    Kay enjoyed spending time with her family.  She particularly enjoyed playing games, with bridge being her favorite.  She enjoyed art of all types and was especially interested in painting and photography.  Kay enjoyed the southwest and its serene way of life.  She also enjoyed traveling throughout the southwest United States.  
    Kay is survived by her daughters, Marcy Maxwell and her husband, Rick, of Craig, and Kelly Gorman and her husband, Patrick, Phoenix; her son, Andrew Sydow of Phoenix; her grandson, Clayton Ogden; her mother, Thelma Minkner of Omaha; her sister, Ann Millard and her husband, Leroy, of Bella Vista, Ark.; her brother, Jon Minkner of Omaha; her aunt and many cousins.
    She is preceded in death by her father, Cleo Minkner; her brother in infancy, Craig R. Minkner; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Betty J. Petersen   

Betty J. Petersen, 87, Yucaipa, Calif., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at Wildwood Village Canyon, Yucaipa, Calif.  Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery..
    Betty J. (Porter) was born  March 31, 1921 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Harry L. and Fleeta Irene (Lockwood) Porter.  She served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 - 1945.  In 1946 she married Dean W. Petersen (whom was also born in Clear Lake).  They farmed outside of Clear Lake for six years before moving to California in 1952.  They were married 40 years and to this union three children were born.
    Betty is survived by her two daughters and one son; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  She is now ing home.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of local arrangements.

    Willys E. Spainhower, 87, of 705 W. Main St., Fertile, Iowa, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
    Memorial services were Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Family suggests memorials to Willys E. Spainhower Memorial Fund.
    Willys was born May 10, 1921 in Chapin, Iowa the son of Theodore and Ruby Iowa (Crawford) Spainhower.  He graduated from Hampton High School in 1938.
    He worked for Douglas Air Craft in Lakewood, Calif. as a designer for over 30 years.  He married Barbara Moss.  After he retired they moved to Kingman, Az. In 2003 he moved to Fertile to live.  He loved the outdoors, mountains, hunting and panning for gold.
    He is survived by his brother, LaVere Spainhower, Walcott, Iowa; sister, Alice Ann MacMillan, Willits, Calif.; two step-children, Deborah Thomas and Diane Hommes; five nephews, Clifford Sorensen, Conrad Spainhower, Martin Spainhower, Theodore Spainhower and Craig Spainhower; four nieces, Judy Gergen, Patricia Sorensen, Rosalee Sorensen and Bonnie Church and a special friend, Shirley Peterson, Clear Lake.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Julius E. Spainhower; wife, Barbara; niece, Janie Spainhower; and step-son, Mick Moss.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Lorrine Willger Thomes, 86, of 401 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
     Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 11, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Tilp officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.  Family suggests memorials to Lorrine Thomes Memorial Fund.
    Lorrine was born March 30, 1922 in Cashton, Wis., the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Sletten) Willger.  She graduated from Gilman High School in Gilman, Wis. Lorrine married Ben Thomes on June 14, 1941 in LaCrosse, Wis.  She attended Milwaukee Area Technical College in Cudahy, Wis.
    She worked at the Cudahy Health Dept. for over 29 years and later worked at the Milwaukee Airport in private airplanes parts department. She was past president of Kelly Senior Center Council, secretary of Kelly Center Travel Club, past president Christian Mothers and Cudahy Home Makers, P.T.A., Den Mother for Cub Scouts, and a member of Clear Lake Friendly Garden Club.  She enjoyed making quilts at St. Patrick’s and Zion Lutheran Church.
    She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake.
    Lorrine is survived by three children, Norb Thomes and his wife, Marie, Clear Lake, Ceci Thomes, Cerrillos, N.M. and Gine Thomes-Cotter, Phoenix, Az.; seven grandchildren, Colleen Cotter and her husband, David, San Diego, Calif., Jon Dunnum and his wife, Suzy, Albuquerque, N.M., Kathy Rewolinski, Gilbert, Az., Colin Cotter and his wife, Melanie, Frisco, Texas, Jeremy Dunnum and his wife, Jacqueline, Albuquerque, Thomas Rewolinski, and his wife, Liz, Gilbert, and Andy Thomes, Clear Lake; three great-grandchildren, Somiya Dunnum, Kira Dunnum and Cleo Cotter; one brother, Norbert Willger and his wife, Rose,  Racine, Wis.; and one sister, Esther Abramovicz, Thorp, Wis. 
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Phyllis Rewolinski; a brother, Glenn Willger; and one sister, Angeline Nichols.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Ruth M. Seidel, 100 1/2, of 1400 7th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
    Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 10, at the Christian Church with the Rev. Scott Wilson officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family suggests memorials to Clear Lake Christian Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
    Ruth was born Dec. 10, 1907 in Lincoln Township, rural Clear Lake, the daughter of LeRoy and Rose (Hall) French.  She attended Clear Lake School.
    She married Ralph Wesley Tarr in 1926. They lived in Clear Lake where they raised their nine children.  She worked at Curley’s Café and the Surf Ballroom.  While her children were growing up she was a cub scout leader.  Her husband Ralph died in an automobile accident.
    On Sept. 20, 1958 she married Clarence Seidel and they farmed in the McIntire, Iowa area.  They retired from the farm in 1988 and moved to Garner, Iowa.  Following her husband’s death in 1991 she moved to Clear Lake to live.
    Her greatest joy in life was being with her family.
    The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care given to her by Oakwood Care Center staff and the Hospice of North Iowa Staff.
    She is survived by six sons, Donald Tarr, Wautoma, Wis., Allan Tarr, Clear Lake, Marvin Tarr, Fort Mitchell, Ala., William (Pat) Tarr, Clear Lake, Richard (Jane) Tarr, Champaign Ill., and Keith (Sharon) Tarr, Clear Lake; 28 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brother, LeRoy (Lorraine) French, Clear Lake; sister, Patricia Edward, Hot Springs, Ark. and sons-in-law, Leo Formanek, Clear Lake, and Norman Spooner, Nora Springs, Iowa.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two daughters, Cindy Lou Spooner and Mary Pat Formanek; son, Robert Tarr and his wife, Polly; daughters-in-law, Pam Tarr, Betty J. Tarr, Betty R. Tarr and Norma Jean Tarr; brother-in-law, Lyle Edward; and three sisters, Violet Wreghitt, Ethelyn Pattersen and Reba (Homer) Moe. 
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Scott Alan Swartz, Clear Lake, died Thursday morning, Nov. 6, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer.  He was 44 years, six days of age.
    A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.
    Scott was born Halloween day, Oct. 31, 1964, at International Falls, Minn.  He graduated from Mariner High School in White Bear Lake, Minn., and Alexandria Technical College, Alexandria, Minn.
    Scott enjoyed being a father and uncle.  His greatest joy was his family.  He wanted to thank everyone who touched his life.
    Scott served in the Army in Georgia and Oklahoma.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing hockey as a youth.
    He is survived by his widow, Tami (Fickle) Swartz, whom he married May 13, 1995, at White Bear Lake; two sons, Timothy and Thomas; one daughter, Tinysha; his parents, Samuel and Charlotte Swartz of Clear Lake; his mother-in-law, Trudy Fickle, of Cambridge, Minn.; two brothers, Samuel (Dawn) Swartz, Spring Lake Park, Minn., and William Swartz, Lake Elmo, Minn.; four sisters, Debra (Steven) Vagstad, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Patricia (Donald) Sames, Hugo, Minn., Jacqueline (Carl) Folsom, Culver City, Minn., Vickie Swartz, Alexandria, Minn.,  also many nephews and nieces.
    He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; an uncle; an aunt; and two nieces.
    Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    LeRoy (Red) Jackson Sr., 85, of 215 S. 3rd St., Apt. 1, Clear Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008.  He passed away at home surrounded by his children under the care of Hospice. A visitation with family was held Saturday, Nov. 8, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.  According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.  Memorials may be given to the LeRoy Jackson Memorial Fund.
    LeRoy (Red) was born March 31, 1923 in Kanawha, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Selma (Jacobson) Jackson.  Following graduation from Kanawha High School, he entered the Navy in 1942 during WWII.  He married Marie Kelly in 1945 in New Jersey.  After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he ed to work in Kanawha.  Red later formed Jackson Brothers Construction Company.  They moved to California in 1978 to work construction with his oldest son.
    Red ed to Iowa and retired in Clear Lake in 1989.  He joined the Clear Lake V.F.W.  He enjoyed his daily Huckly Buck card game at Elly’s, Thursday night poker with his friends and Wednesday night pool league where he quickly became known for making the 8 ball on the break 15 times.
    Red had a great ability for making friends where ever he was.  He really enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and always gave them a two-dollar bill.
    Red is survived by Marie Jackson, Clear Lake; six children, Sandy Jackson, Pearblossom, Calif., Dan Jackson and his wife, Vicki, Clear Lake, Kelly Jackson and his wife, Nelda, Garner, Iowa, Matt Jackson, Little Rock, Calif., Joseph Jackson and his wife, Kay, New Baden, Ill., and Maureen Kozisek and her husband, Kevin, Garner; sisters, Marian Kraft, Kanawha, Iowa, Luetta Stoeckel, Barnegat, N.J., Vivian Waage, Goodell, Iowa; brothers, Lewis Jackson Jr. and his wife, Ethelene, Kanawha, Paul Jackson and his wife, Kaye, Kanawha, and sister-in-law, Fern Jackson, Richland Center, Wis.; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
    Red was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Stanley and Alvin Jackson; brother-in-law, Fritz Waage, Kenneth Kraft and Jack Stoeckel; son, Charles Jackson; and grandson, Travis Jackson.

    Mary “Diane” Ham, 73, of 660 Briarstone Drive, Mason City, Iowa died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
    A memorial Mass was held Thursday, Nov. 13, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating.  Inurnment took place Friday, Nov. 14, in Corpus Christi Cemetery at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Memorials may be made out to Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society.
    Mary Diane (Duffy) was born on May 6, (her mother’s birthday) in the year 1935.  She was the daughter of Paul and Cecelia (Broskey) Duffy.  Diane attended Sacred Heart School for 12 years, graduating from high school in 1953. She then studied at Duchesne College in Omaha, Neb.
    She was married in 1955 and six children were born to this union.  Diane was very proud of her family.  Faith, family and friends were the center of her world.
    Diane ed to college in 1980, earning a nursing degree. She worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Hendrick Regional Hospital in Abilene, Texas, and at the North Iowa Eye Clinic from which she retired in 1998.
    She married Wayne Ham on Nov. 20, 1982, in Abilene.
    Active in her faith, she helped establish parish nursing, was chairperson on many committees, sang in the choir, and became a minister of communion.
     Diane enjoyed each day of her life, most especially after being diagnosed with cancer in 2002.  Making memories with her grandchildren gave her joy.  She also enjoyed traveling, painting, flower gardening, music and reading, as well as collecting miniature lighthouses from areas she visited.  Diane was past president of B.F. Chapter, T.T.T., a board member of Mason City Women’s Club and St. Joseph’s Parish Life.  She volunteered at Community Kitchen, helped deliver Meals on Wheels, was a Hospice volunteer, and a member of the KeyNotes singing group.
    She is survived by her husband, Wayne, Mason City; children, Greg (Denise) Garth, Omaha, Mark (Paula) Garth, Sioux City, Iowa, Gary (Lori) Garth, Des Moines, Iowa, Debra Garth, David (Michelle) Garth, Pembroke Pines, Fla., Steven (Janet) Ham, Osage, Iowa, and Janelle Ham, Marshalltown, Iowa; her grandchildren, Josh Garth and Jasmine Garth, Omaha, Paul Garth, Omaha, Katherine Garth, Madison, Wis., Jason and Scott Carroll, Ames, Iowa, Brenna Garth, St. Peter, Minn., Lacey Garth, Des Moines, Victoria, Amanda and Samantha Garth, Pembroke Pines, Jeremy Ham, Osage, Jamie Ham, Lake Mills, Iowa, Holley Counsell, Mazeppa, Minn., Erin Sansgard, Cresco, Iowa, Timothy Toppin, Osage, and Noelle Toppin, Rudd, Iowa; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Patrick (Joan) Duffy, Kerrville, Texas; and her sister, Kay (Ray) Denkhoff, Abilene, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    She left this life to be with her heavenly family; her parents; son, Steven; nephew, Randy Garth; niece, Diane Denkhoff; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Bricker.

    Lu Davis, 88, formerly of Clear Lake, died Nov. 11, 2008 in Ferdinand, Ind.
    Memorial services will be Saturday, Nov. 22, 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Michael Nash officiating.  Visitation will be one half hour before the service. Family suggests memorials to Lu Davis Memorial Fund.
    Lu was born Aug. 17, 1920 in Belmond, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Emma (Nihoof) Stockwell.
    She graduated from Garner High School in 1938.  Lu married Edward Davis on Nov. 16, 1946 in Nashua, Iowa.
    Lu worked for the Garner High School for five years as a secretary and then at Clear Lake High School as a secretary for 14 1/2 years.
     She was a member of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake.
    Lu is survived by her son, John Davis, Toledo, Ohio; grandson, Jeffrey Davis and his wife, Pam, St. Meinrad, Ind.; granddaughter, Kristie Niemi and her husband, Christopher, Maple Grove, Minn. and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Johnathon Davis.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; daughter, Carolyn Stricker; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Stockwell.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Pearl Ashland Delahooke, 97, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at the Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
    Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel in Fort Dodge with Chaplain Bill Trembly officiating.  Burial was at the Clear Lake Cemetery Thursday afternoon.
    Pearl Evelyn Burke was born on Sept. 9, 1911, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Dena Schaa and John E. Burke.  She graduated from Mason City High School in 1929, attended Mason City Junior College and received a degree from Hamilton Business College.  In 1935, she married Irving H. Ashland of Clear Lake.  They farmed nearby until 1959, retiring in Clear Lake where Mr. Ashland died at home in 1976.  Until 1986, Pearl was actively involved in Clear Lake and was employed by Casey Drug, Patterson Jewelry and Home Health Care.  In 1988, Pearl married the the Rev. Dr. James K. Delahooke of Clear Lake.  The Rev. Delahooke died in 1994 in Fort Dodge where they had made their home at Friendship Haven.  Mrs. Delahooke lived at Friendship Haven Heritage Apartments for 20 years where she met Ed Hughes, her special friend for the past eight years.
    Pearl was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge.
    Pearl is survived by her daughter, Linda Ashland, of New York City; step-daughter, Nancy Delahooke Thayer and husband, Dr. Keith Thayer, of Iowa City, Iowa; Ed Hughes, his son, Jack and wife, Marsha, all of Fort Dodge; numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren. 
    She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters; and two husbands.

    LaVern G. Brattrud, 67, of 400 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, Iowa died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.
    Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating.  Interment was in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to LaVern G. Brattrud Memorial Fund.
    LaVern was born in Mason City, Iowa the son of Kermeth and Lorayn (Myelle) Brattrud.  He attended school in Manly, Iowa.
    In 1974 he moved with his parents to a farm east of Hanlontown, Iowa where he farmed with his father.  He continued to live there until 2006, when he moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living in Clear Lake.
    As a hobby LaVern enjoyed putting together and flying model airplanes.  LaVern was the leader of LaVern’s Rhythm Boys Band and played the accordion in the band from 1968-1985.    He continued to share his music playing the accordion his entire life.  He was a member of the Mason City Moose Lodge and Local 230 Muscian Union.
    He is survived by his aunt, Shirley Brattrud, Clear Lake and four cousins, Shelley Garlock, Clear Lake, Jeff Brattrud and his wife, Cindy, Clear Lake, Scott Brattrud and his wife, Karo, Clear Lake, and Renee Kallheim, Springfield, Mo. 
    He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    Ardis June Feuerhak, 84, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.  A funeral service for Ardis was held Sunday, Nov. 23, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs of Galilean Lutheran Church, the Rev. Don Feuerhak and the Rev. Ron Feuerhak, sons of Ardis, officiating. 
    According to her wishes, following the service her body was cremated.  An inurnment will take place in the Deronda Lutheran Cemetery, Deronda, Wis. in the spring.
    Memorials may be given to Galilean Lutheran Church, Oakwood Care Center, or Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.
    Ardis was born May 16, 1924 in Amery, Wis., the daughter of Perry and Hulda (Myrvold) Iverson.  She graduated from Amery High School and a secretarial school in Minneapolis, Minn.  Ardis married Leonard P. Feuerhak on March 23, 1946 at Deronda Lutheran Church, Deronda, Wis.  He preceded her in death in October 1999.
    Ardis worked as a secretary for the West Bend, Wis. school system and for Apple Valley Hospital in Amery.
    She was an active member of the Lutheran Church all of her life, singing in the choir and participating in the women’s organizations.  In Clear Lake she was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church.
    Ardis enjoyed music, special programs, religious activities, games, and visiting with staff and peers.
    Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, the Rev. Don Feuerhak and his wife, Barb, Cedar Falls, Iowa and the Rev. Ron Feuerhak of Ankeny, Iowa; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Brenda) Iverson of Greenville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Iverson of Cumberland, Wis., as well as other extended family members and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; grandson, Paul Feuerhak; a sister, Shirley; and three brothers, Lloyd, Glenn, and Earl.

    Lillie L. Wornson, 95, of 2414 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Nov, 19, 2008, at the Apple Valley Assisted Living facility in Clear Lake.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian from Zion Lutheran Church officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
    Lillie was born on a farm on Jan. 26, 1913 in Reed Township, Seneca County, Ohio, near Attica, Ohio.  She was one of 10 children, eight girls and two boys, born to John and Amanda Wolf.  Lillie’s father owned and operated a stone quarry on the farm and became an early pioneer in the road construction business.   Lillie graduated from Tiffin University and, being an independent and ambitious young woman, moved to Washington D.C. with her younger sister, Charlotte, in search of a career.  She worked for many years as secretary to an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Justice Department.  While in D.C. she met Clayton Wornson, a young law student.  They were married in Washington in 1938 and while in Washington had their first two children, Richard and Thomas.  Clayton was a lieutenant in the Navy serving overseas, and Lillie continued to work and raise her children in Washington D.C.
    After the war, she and Clayton moved to Mankato, Minn. and then to Mason City, Iowa.  Lillie and Clayton had three more children, Douglas, Jamie and David.  She continued to work for the Social Security Administration while raising five boys.  In 1965 Clayton and Lillie built a house on the lake and moved to Clear Lake.  After the boys were grown, Lillie had the opportunity to retire at age 62 and pursue her personal passions of gardening, reading, French cooking and traveling with her family and grandchildren.  Her five boys pursued a variety of successful careers and moved all over the country and overseas, but it was Lillie’s loving character and influence that kept them all coming back to the Clear Lake house for family gatherings, food, recreation and especially music.
    Lillie is survived by her five boys, Richard (Cathy) Wornson, New Prague, Minn., Thomas Wornson, San Francisco, Calif., Douglas (Barbara) Wornson, Northfield, Minn., Jamie (Diana) Wornson, Des Moines, Iowa and David (Laurie) Wornson, Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, John, Kristin, Eric, Katie, Lizzie, Lexi, Jessie, John, Nick and David; one great-grand child, Elliot; daughter-in-law, Francis Wornson and Michael Hartung, Cross Lake, Minn.; siblings, John, Charlotte and Barbara; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She will be greatly missed by all.      She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; five sisters and one brother.
    Lillie was a woman of extraordinary beauty, patience, modesty, intelligence, and poise.

    Alvin E. Meyer, Jr., 77, of 215 East Lake Street, died Thursday. Nov. 20, 2008, at the Concord Care Center, Garner, Iowa.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating.  Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
    Memorials may be directed to the Alvin E. Meyer, Jr. Memorial Fund.
    Alvin E. Meyer, Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Garner, the son of Alvin Sr. and Arlis (Geisler) Meyer.  Alvin graduated from Ventura High School. He enlisted into the United States Airforce, Ft. Hood, Texas.  Alvin was united in marriage to Frances Muhlenbruch on June 12, 1960; to this union three children were born.
    Alvin farmed in the Ventura area all of his life.  He was a great influence to his sons in agriculture helping them get started in farming.  After retiring Alvin and Frances moved into Ventura.
    Alvin enjoyed restoring tractors, tinkering with Volkswagens, woodworking and watching westerns.  He really loved spending time with his family and socializing with friends at the Ventura Elevator.  He was a member of Farm Bureau, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and he was a 4-H leader.
    Alvin is survived by his wife, Frances Meyer, Hampton, Iowa; children, Cindy Dvorak, Ventura, Jeff Meyer, Garner, Rick (Michelle) Meyer, Iowa Falls, Iowa; grandchildren, Laura and Jenny Dvorak, Ventura,  Josh, Ben and Kayla Meyer, Iowa Falls; siblings, Mari (Carroll) Albers, Garner, Jim (Mary Jo) Meyer, Clear Lake, Boni Pringnitz, Garner, Bob (Jan) Meyer, Mason City; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Alvin is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Phillip Dvorak; and brother-in-law, Virgil Pringnitz.
    Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

    LeRoy C. (Frenchie, Shorty) French, 81, of 108 North 10th Street, Clear Lake, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.  Funeral Services were Saturday, Nov. 29, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.   Memorials may be made to the LeRoy French Memorial Fund.
    LeRoy was born the son of LeRoy and Rose Ada (Hall) French, Feb. 18, 1927, in Clear Lake.
    LeRoy grew up with five older sisters, two of whom were married and had children before he was born.  When he was 16 he moved to Garner, Iowa to a farm with his sister, Ethelyn. This farm is now the home of his youngest daughter, Wendy.
    LeRoy joined the Navy in April 1945 and served aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma City for 15 months. He ed to Clear Lake in 1946. He then drove semi truck for several years.  LeRoy owned Clear Lake Monument Company. He farmed north of Clear Lake and worked for Cerro Gordo County in road maintenance for 36 years and 85 days retiring in 1992. His love of farming filled many hours of his life working for Richardson, Luscombe, Etchen & Dandy Land farms.
    After retiring he enjoyed being head driver for the Chevrolet garage.
    LeRoy married Lorraine B. Stalker, Feb. 19, 1952, at the United Methodist Church, Rudd, Iowa.
    LeRoy is survived by his wife, Lorraine French, Clear Lake; one son, Terry (Kari) French, Kansas City, Mo.; four daughters, Nancy (Harvey) Kunzman, Clear Lake; Kathy (David) Olson, Eagle, Colo.; Vicky (Lynn) Holstad, Westcliffe, Colo.; Wendy (Daniel) Wood, Garner; daughter, Jackie Haag, from a previous marriage; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Olson, Eagle, Colo.; Michael (Lisa) French,  Smithville, Mo., Tyler (Staci) French, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower; Carissa Holstad, Centennial, Colo.; Aaron Holstad, Westminster, Colo.; Joslyn Wood, Ames, Iowa; Julie French, Warrensburg, Mo.; Austin Wood, Bloomington, Minn.; Garrett Kunzman, Clear Lake; Madison French, Kansas City, Mo.; 3 step-grandchildren, Meghan (Steven) Simon and  Marissa Ebeling, Kansas City,  and Tina Kunzman, Mason City; sister, Florence (Pat) Edwards, Clear Lake.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Violet (Frank) Wreghitt, Ethelyn (Art) Werle,  twins Reba (Truman) Moe, Ruth Seidel, and grandson, David Olson.

    Marlys Pueggel, 85, 205 Orchard Lane, Clear Lake, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at Concord Care Center, Garner, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1, at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Garner, Iowa, with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.  Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery, rural Garner.  Memorials may be made to the Marlys Pueggel Memorial Fund.
    Marlys Pueggel was born on March 24, 1923 to Charles and Lena (Anderson) Hyde in Garner.  She attended E11 Township School.  Marlys lived and worked with her parents on the family farm north of Ventura until marrying Arnold Pueggel on Dec. 17, 1950 at Zion Reformed Church in Garner.  The couple farmed north of Clear Lake until 1984 when they moved to Clear Lake.
     Marlys loved to garden and maintained a large vegetable and flower garden on the farm.  She provided seemingly tireless help and boundless enthusiasm for the differing jobs around the house and farm - even for many years after moving to town.  Marlys also loved to sew for her family, and as a member of the church’s quilting society, she made and donated hundreds of lap quilts to Lutheran World Relief.  She was an active member of St John Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school for 20 years; a dedicated member of the Ladies Aid Society and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  She was also a member of the neighborhood Busy Bee Club.
     Marlys is survived by her husband, Arnold Pueggel, Clear Lake; five children and their families – Linda (Mrs. James Lentz), Green Valley, Az. and their children, Kristi and Michael; David and his wife, Kathryn, Clear Lake and their children, Ellie, Will and his wife, Stephanie, Wesley and Grant; Diane (Mrs. Craig Busch), Ventura and their children, Stacie and husband, Larry Hieb, Callie and her husband, Luke Brager, and Garrett; Cheryl (Mrs. Denny Whitehurst), Clear Lake, and son, Jake; JoAnn (Mrs. David Welsh) Clear Lake and their children, Travis and Lisa; great-grandchildren, Owen Pueggel, Hailey and Zoey Hieb; brother, Robert Hyde and his wife, Ruth; sister-in-law, Deany Hyde and several nieces and nephews.
    Preceding her in death were her parents; step-father, Dover Kramer and brother, Donald Hyde.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
