Memorials maybe given to the Gary Miller Memorial Fund. Chic was born Feb. 27, 1939 in Clear Lake, the son of Gretchen Miller. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1957 and attended Mason City Junior College, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1962. Following the service he came back to Clear Lake and was a route driver for Marshall and Swift Inc. Chic was a bartender at the Half Moon, the Golden Goose and Harbor Inn. Chic enjoyed golfing, playing kismet with his buddies, playing cards, bowling and going to the casinos. He loved watching all sports. Chic is survived by several cousins, Gayle Stokes, Clear Lake, Jim Bird and his wife, Karen, Mason City, David Bird, Mason City, Linda Anderson and her husband, Robert, Clear Lake, Bob Bird and his wife, Connie, Clear Lake, and Jackie Saltzgaver, Texas. Chic was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents; special aunts and uncles, Adam and Molly Miller, Helen and Roy Bird, and Wayne and Ann Stokes; and cousins, Rex Miller, Joey Bird and Gordon Stokes. Cletus Charles Schott, 79, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Prairie View Nursing home in Sanborn, Iowa.
A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 12 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Tilp officiating. Interment will follow at Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, and Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Cletus was born on June 28, 1928, in Pocahontas, Iowa, the son of George and Julia Schott. He married Leona Wolf on May 17, 1949, in Pocahontas. He managed grain elevators in Mitchellville, Clare, Sanborn, Swea City, and Burchinal, Iowa. He drove the fire truck as a volunteer fireman in Clare, Iowa. He enjoyed golf, dancing, playing cards, basketball, the Iowa Hawkeyes and having a good drink with his children and friends. Cletus was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his nine children, Mike Schott and his fiancée, Annette, of Fremont, Neb., Jerry Schott and wife, Cindy, of Hartford, S.D., Bev Feller and husband, Rick, of Mustang, Okla., Ron and wife, Audrey, of Sanborn, Joan Walthour of McAllen, Texas, Sue Postma and husband, Gene, of Littleton, Colo., Kathleen Tauber of Colo, Iowa, Tom Schott and wife, Ann, of Forest City, Iowa, and David Schott and Jackie of Mason City; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Madden and LaVonne Neiman, both of Parker, Colo., and many nieces and nephews. Dave G. Frisbie, 57, of 210 W.10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at his residence.
Memorial services will be Saturday, March 8, 11 a.m., at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Family suggests memorials to Dave G. Frisbie Memorial Fund. Dave was born Oct. 15, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of C.H. and Ila Jean (Walker) Frisbie. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1971, following high school he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After the service he moved back to Clear Lake where he did construction, worked at Opportunity Village, Clear Lake Bakery, and then at Liberty Square, Nora Springs, Iowa. He enjoyed spending time with his son, especially their rides around the lake, going to movies and teasing him. His favorite movie was, “No Country For Old Men.” He is survived by his son, Nick Frisbie, Clear Lake; parents, C.H. and Ila Jean Frisbie, Clear Lake; brother, Michael Frisbie, Clear Lake; sister, Diane Rich and her husband, Bruce, Sacramento, Calif.; aunt, Joanne Bearss and her husband, Russell, Vermillion, Ohio; uncles, Bob Walker, Mason City, Iowa and George Walker and his wife, Sally, Palm Desert, Calif.; cousins, Benjamin Rich, Katie McFarland, Steve Mailey, Sara Mailey, Nancy Bearss, Daniel Bearss, Ann Vinkovich, Nancy Conroy and her husband, Chuck, and Kirk Walker, Megan and Branwen. Alf Oswald passed away Feb. 10, 2008 at the age of 79 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, Iowa on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with burial at the Clear Lake Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Alf was born May 4, 1928 near Elmore, Minn. into his Norwegian family, joining two brothers and two sisters. As a young child the family moved to Ventura where he attended school until his brothers went into WW II and he was needed to help on the farm. Following the war he enrolled at Waldorf College to finish his education. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to San Diego, Calif. He was assigned to the U.S. Randolph air craft carrier in the Mediterranean where he worked in communications. He ed to Clear Lake after serving and worked for Allied Mills sacking and sewing animal feeds for 23 years. In 1957, on the beach of Clear Lake, he was introduced to Donna Peterson, a teacher at Lake Mills, Iowa. Donna and Alf were married at the Forest City Methodist Church June 7, 1958 and settled into their home in Clear Lake. Alf’s happiest day was the day his beautiful baby girl, Kim Diane, was born. Health issues forced Alf to retire and his strong Christian faith sustained his entire life no matter what problems came along. He became the “stay at home dad” providing all the needs of his family in a loving nature, never complaining while Donna finished her education and teaching. They lived in Clear Lake 24 years before moving to Mason City, Iowa for 17 years. In 2000, Alf and Donna moved to Ankeny to be near Kim and her husband, Jason. He loved his church, his gardens at Maplewood, and the family and friends that surrounded him. Alf loved to travel with his family and enjoyed multiple trips to Norway, traveling through 13 countries in Europe, and annual trips to Hawaii in February away from the cold winter. He was a dedicated, loving family man who loved his time with Donna, Kim, and Jason. He was always willing to help everyone and will be deeply missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Dr. Kim Oswald and her husband, Jason Douglas; sisters, Jennie Baker, and Inga Nordaas; sister-in-law, June Oswald and a large supportive group of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Sigvart Oswald; brothers, Swen in WW II and Gordon; and brothers-in-law, Chad Baker and Swen Nordaas. Sunday, February 10, 2008
Donald E. Birdsell, 89, of 1300 2nd Ave North, Clear Lake, died at his residence Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 15, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave North, Clear Lake with the Rev. Dianna Hoover officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 -7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake and then one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Donald E. Birdsell Memorial Fund.
Donald was born Aug. 14, 1918, the son of Marx Edward and Edith (Lomen) Birdsell at Mason City. Donald attended Mason City High School. He worked for the Busy Bee Shoe Shop in Mason City. Donald married June Klinge, April 5, 1941 at Hampton, Iowa. They moved to Richmond, Calif. where he worked in the shipyards during the war. After the war, they ed to Mason City where he was employed at Peoples Gas & Electric. In 1946 they moved to Manly, Iowa where they owned and operated the Shop & Go Grocery Store. They moved back to Mason City in 1959 where he was employed with Mason City School System. In 1969 they moved to Miramar, Fla. where he worked at the Hollywood Memorial Hospital as an engineer, retiring in 1985. In 1987 they moved to Warsaw, Mo., where they lived until moving to their present home in Clear Lake in 1994 to be closer to their children. Donald loved playing golf, woodworking, fishing, and built one of his own fishing boats. He especially enjoyed spending time and being around his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, June of Clear Lake; three daughters, Sharon (Larry) Dixon, Linda Johnston and Nancy Whipple all of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Laura Bramsen and her partner, Darin Reynolds, Tracy (Michael) Waite, Jessica Johnston-Lipp, William T. Whipple, David (Lisa) Whipple, June (Michael) Bahnsen and Benjamin Whipple; eight great-grandchildren, Jeramy Schiefelbein, Jacob (Treena) Waite, Benjamin (Katie) Bramsen, Jillian Waite, William G. Whipple, Brenna Johnston, Amaya Bahnsen and Julia Whipple; and four great-great-granchildren, Alexis Schiefelbein, MaKayla Waite, MaKenna Waite and Hailey Hansen; two brothers-in-law, Donald Kofron and David (Patricia) Klinge. Diane Lucille Fiala, 51, of Clear Lake went to her heavenly home Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Church of Christ, Fertile, Iowa with the Rev. Dennis Ganz, officiating. Diane Lucille Fiala was born Sept. 29, 1956 at Offutt Air Force Base, Bellvue, Neb., a daughter of Dean and Beverly (Pitkin) Krieger. Raised in an Air Force family, Diane was baptized in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1968. Diane was a 1975 graduate of Forest City High School, Forest City, Iowa where she was involved in the girl’s glee choir, concert choir, a member of the homecoming royalty court, and was a varsity cheerleader. She married Tim Abrams in June 1976 and to this union a son, Alan, was born. Diane worked at Winnebago Industries, Forest City for 17 years as the word processing supervisor. She was united in marriage to Joe Fiala on Aug. 29, 1987 at Estes Park, Colo. In 1992 she began working with her husband Joe at their business, Fiala Office Products, Mason City, Iowa. Diane enjoyed crocheting, playing the piano, and family gatherings at their cabin, on Clear Lake. She was a member of the Quaker House Church, Mason City. Diane accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at a very young age and her personal relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ was very important to her. Her greatest desire was to bring honor and glory to God through her life. Diane viewed her illness as an opportunity to witness to others about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and she knew that he was working through her, to reach others. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Fiala, Clear Lake; a daughter, Jennifer (Shaun) Krachmer, Austin, Minn.; two sons, Alan (Camille) Abrams, Lakeville, Minn., and Lonny Fiala and his friend, Kelly Nelson, Mason City; six grandchildren, Cory, Talon, and Kya, Austin, Minn., Tishan, Bryce, and Tristan, Lakeville; her father, Dean Krieger, Forest City; twin brother, David (Unhui) Krieger, Springfield, Va.; brother, Daryl (Tamera) Krieger, Forest City; a sister, Debra (Timothy) Nelson, Forest City; mother in-law, Gladys Fiala, Mason City; sisters in-law, Marilyn (David) Hegvedt, Austin, Texas, Connie (Dennis) Vanderpol, Urbandale, Iowa, Kathy (Barnie) Clark, Clive, Iowa; brother in-law, Frank (Emily) Fiala; and a large group of nieces and nephews whom she held close to her heart. LeNora Coretta Ouverson, of 404 1st St. N., Hanlontown, Iowa, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, Iowa, with Lay Minister David Halverson officiating. Interment was in the Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile. Family suggests memorials to LeNora C. Ouverson Memorial Fund, Good Samaritan Home, Forest City, Iowa or a charity of your choice. LeNora was born June 22, 1915 on the family farm in rural Joice, Iowa, the daughter of Nels E. and Mary (Suby) Fjeld. She graduated from Fertile High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she obtained her teachers certification. She taught in rural school. LeNora married Lawrence Ouverson on June 22, 1938 at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. They farmed the rural Fertile area and she continued to live on the farm after her husband’s death in 1950. In 1965 she moved to Forest City and later Clear Lake and in 1973 to her present home. She enjoyed playing Rook, croquet, hide the thimble with the grandkids, going on picnics and visiting with friends and neighbors. Her visitors enjoyed her good homemade bread and pastries, especially her pies. At Christmas time they especially enjoyed her good Lefsa, Krumkaka and many of her cookies. She was the person who made the Roomegrot, and did much of the other preparation necessary when the whole Field family gathered at the family farm for Christmas Eve. She was very proud of her Norwegian Heritage. She was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church. LeNora is survived by three sons, Jerry Ouverson and his wife, Donna, Fertile, Paul Ouverson and his wife, Carol, Boone, Iowa and Rodney “Hap” Ouverson and his wife, MaryAnn, Springfield, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey Ouverson and his wife, Dixie, Jon Ouverson and his wife, Lori, Julie Ouverson, Jodie Pick and her husband, Marc, Jamie Ouverson, Anne Marie Bice and her husband, Dan, Matthew Ouverson, Chad Ouverson and his wife, Vidya, Michelle Peterson and her husband, Tom, Ryan Ward, Jason Ward and his wife, Nicole and Andrew Ouverson; 11 great-grandchildren, Kara, Kaitlyn, Michala, Corrigan, Kjersten, Nolan, Priya, Chandler, Lauren, Morgan and Carlyn and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Ronald; five brothers, Edwin, Lloyd, Carl, John and Raymond and one sister, Laura. Charlotte McEnelly Swartz, Oakwood Care Center, 400 West Highway 18, Clear Lake, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at the age of 96 years, five months, and 29 days. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa, 206 Highway 69 N, Forest City, IA 50436.
Charlotte was born Aug. 20, 1911, at Lake Mills, Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Garfield McEnelly and Myrtle Mildred Myers. Charlotte graduated from high school at Hanlontown, Iowa then attended commercial art school in Chicago, Ill. While in Chicago she was an usher in legitimate theater. She became an accomplished artist and many of her pictures are displayed in several states. Her paintings received many awards in Iowa and elsewhere. Among other things, she lettered names of those who served in World War II on Honor Roll boards throughout North Iowa. She was described in an article in the Mason City Globe Gazette as a “traveling woman painter.” She worked at numerous occupations while living in Hanlontown, including cook at the local restaurant and in the school lunch program. She and her husband were very active in the Boy Scout program. She enjoyed raising flowers and the flowers from her garden brightened many weddings. For many years in the 40’s and 50’s she was a correspondent from Hanlontown for the Clear Lake Mirror Reporter. Following the death of her husband she attended nursing school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, graduating with an LPN degree. She worked in pediatrics at University Hospitals until her retirement. She then ed to Mason City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Bealor Swartz, whom she married Oct. 14, 1929 at Crown Point, Ind.; her parents; one son, David; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; two brothers, Norman and William and one sister, Mary Ardis. She is survived by a daughter, M. Jeanne Sears, of Madison, Wis., two sons, Samuel Bealor (Charlotte Francis) and Daniel Douglas (Shirley Orcutt), both of Clear Lake; also a daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann (Kruse) of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Fern I. “Skippy” Miller, 74, of Hampton Health Center, Hampton, Iowa formerly Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008 at the Hampton Health Center.

Fern married Orville C. “Buzz” Miller May 6, 1950 in Glenville, Minn. They farmed in the Clear Lake area. She worked at Unisys in Clear Lake. Fern enjoyed Fourth of July celebrations, listening on her CB, going to the casino and her dog, Patty. Fern is survived by sisters-in-law, Pearl Miller, Clear Lake, Peg Prohaska, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dorothy Jean (Orville) Heimendinger, Osage, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Dwayne (Ardith) Miller, Charles City, Iowa and Bob Carpenter, Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews. Based on her diagnosis, Payton beat the odds and overcame a lot in the short time she was here. The graveside service was held Monday, Feb. 25, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Janis Ball Memorial Fund. Through organ donation she has the potential to improve the quality of life for many people. Janis was born the daughter of Merle and Esther (Denkas) Fish, Aug. 21, 1948 in Charles City, Iowa. She was a 1966 graduate of Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock High School. She was married to Clarence Ball of the Bronx, N.Y. for 21 years before his passing in 1997. Janis was a kind, gentle, soft spoken woman who enjoyed cooking, talking with family and friends and watching her grandchildren grow up. Janis was a big fan of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “Rachael Ray” and “Paula Dean.” She will be deeply missed. Survivors include her daughter, Sara Ball, of Clear Lake; daughter, Wendy Smith and her husband, the Rev. Steve, of Lake Mills, Iowa; son, Dennis Ball of Spencer, Iowa; daughter, Debbie Ball of Albert Lea, Minn.; three grandchildren whom she adored, Megan Shahan (17), and Erin Shahan (14) of Lake Mills and Trevor Marquez (6) of Albert Lea; a brother, Dean Fish and his wife, Jeannette, of Phoenix, Az.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Clare was born Nov. 25, 1913, the son of Knute and Aleta (Rear) Olson, on the family farm rural Clear Lake. Clare attended country school and was a graduate of Clear Lake High School. Clare married Violet Jolly on Dec. 21, 1942 at Bethany, Mo. They farmed in the Clear Lake area. He fixed clocks, televisions and radios. He loved to make people happy and did custom farming. Clare could pick up any instrument and play it and enjoyed talking, dancing and going to the Surf. He also liked to travel and was a collector and enjoyed going to auctions. Clare was family oriented and liked to ride his motorcycle. Clare is survived by his former wife and good friend, Violet Olson, Clear Lake; three daughters, Mary Butts, Clear Lake; Marcia (Jim) Gardinier, Clear Lake; and Ruth (Doug) Henning, Fertile, Iowa; four grandchildren, Steven (Echo) Cash; Ashley Olson; John (Lynn) Sheimo and April Sheimo; and nine great-grandchildren. Dennis Ray Duregger, 67, of 802 S. 9th St., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Dennis R. Duregger Memorial Fund. Denny was born Jan. 18, 1941 in Clear Lake, the son of Albert and Fannie (Rish) Duregger. He attended Clear Lake High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following the service he worked construction in the Des Moines area on the Red Rock Dam. He later was employed at Winnebago and then Curries Manufacturing as a mechanic. Denny enjoyed golfing, fishing, NASCAR and spending time with friends. Denny is survived by his daughter, Rene’ Duregger, Wichita, Kan.; his former wife, Sharon Newell, Clear Lake; three sisters, Karen Nichols and her husband, John, Clear Lake, Vicki Dietrich, Mason City, and Jolene Boyd and her husband, Bill, Mason City, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey in 1999; sister, Carol Jean; and an infant sister. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements. George Henry Clark, 76, peacefully left this world on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008.
George was born in Des Moines, Iowa, March 22, 1932. He graduated from Tech High School. After graduation he went to work for Orville Lowe Ford, in sales. Throughout the years he worked at Bud Flood Buick and General Manager New Cars, Bob Brown Chevrolet. He later had his own car lot at East 6th and Court Avenue before moving to California to work in RV sales. He ed to Des Moines seven years ago and continued working at Prairie Meadows and recently was employed by Polk County. George enjoyed fishing, telling a good joke, and making people laugh. George served in the Iowa National Guard and was a member of the Iowa Masonic Lodge. George is survived by his wife, Shari (Hanke) Clark; four daughters, Cindia (John) Badger, Cathy (Tom) Goldman, Cheryl Teply (Tom Grimes), and Carrie (Ron) Glanville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ina and George; and his sister, Delores. Arrangements are being made by Westover Funeral Home of Des Moines. A private memorial service is being planned for the immediate family.
