Donald E. Sabbann

MASON CITY -- Donald E. Sabbann, 86, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Della G. Toftey-Hansen

KANAWHA -- Della G. Toftey-Hansen, age 85, of rural Kanawha, Iowa, died Monday, September 23, 2013, at her home in rural Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2013, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, west of Belmond, Iowa. The Reverend James Harbaugh will be officiating. Burial will be in the St. Olaf Church Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E., Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the services at church Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the family or the donor’s choice.

Della Georgienna (Reuben) Toftey, the daughter of William and Jennie (Albers) Reuben, was born on November 12, 1927, near Kanawha. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, Iowa. She attended school in Kanawha and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1945.

She married Bernard Toftey in 1948 at the church in Klemme. One son, Rodney, was born to them in 1951. She was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond. In past years she was a member of the Altar Guild, Kennsington Club and Home Study Club.

She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, flower arranging, gardening, decorating and most of all acrylic painting. She enjoyed nature and feeding and watching birds. She took care of multiple kitties and Shasta was special. Dogs were special also.

Della enjoyed shopping and going out with her Kanawha friends to eat for each one’s birthday.

In 1984, she married Laurence Hansen. After a few years she divorced and moved back to the farm where she has since resided.

She is survived by her son, Rodney (wife Susan) Toftey, and one granddaughter, Stefanie Toftey, who also meant so much to her. Also, three step-grandchildren, Derek, Laura and Phil; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Drew. Nephews: Gary (Robin) Mewes, Craig Toftey, Bruce (Michelle) Toftey, Brian (Beth) Toftey, Bob and Jane, Scott and Cindy, Jay Provorse and Bradd Provorse, Jane, Cindy, Michelle, Kasey, and a sister-in-law, Donna Toftey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bernard, in 1979, and a sister, Doris, and sister-in-law, Avis.

Vernice Johnson

IOWA FALLS -- Vernice Johnson, 94 of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, Sep. 24, 2013, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with burial in the Union Cemetery.

Larry Anderson

LAKOTA -- Larry Anderson, age 77, of Lakota passed away Tuesday Sept. 24, 2013 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday September 27, 2013 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota with Judy Junkermeier, CML officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. on Thursday also at the church.

Interment will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Lakota.

Larry DeWayne Anderson was born April 28, 1936, in Elmore, Minnesota, to Clifford and Marie (Dornbush) Anderson. Larry attended school in Elmore and then attended Mankato State for one year before he started farming back in Elmore.

On Nov. 15, 1959, Larry and Charlotte R. Swanson of Swea City, Iowa, were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed until 1984 when he then went to work at Winnebago Industries in Forest City until retiring in 2001.

Larry enjoyed being with family, going to sporting events, golfing, some woodworking and working around the yard. He especially enjoyed going to all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.

Left to cherish his memory is his son Mark D. Anderson (special friend Sandra Smith) of Lakota; daughter Diane J. Anderson of Titonka. Grandchildren; Mike & Stephanie Cuevas of El Paso, Texas, Ambre Anderson of Buffalo Center, Jessica Anderson and JD Schroeder of Clear Lake, Jeremiah Anderson of Lakota, Allyn and Alyssa Askildson of Buffalo Center, Sarah Anderson of Lakota, Jessica & Ben Maday of Ledyard, Darci & Chad Boyington of Klemme, Hali & Mark Laubenthal of Bancroft and Colby Smith of Lakota. His great grandchildren; Cheyanne and Ayden Schroeder, Autumn and Abbie Askildson, Levi, Wesley, Sawyer Maday, Victoria, Devon, Mason Laubenthal, and Addison, Chantel, Chris Cuevas. Great-great grandchild; Jaxxon. His two brothers; Roger & Eleanor Anderson of Lake Crystal, Minnesota and Robert & Kathy Anderson of Buhl, Minnesota. Brother-in-law; Marshall & Paula Swanson of Mosinee, Wisconsin, sister-in-law; Connie & Harold Wade of Fairmont, Minnesota. As well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte, his son Allen D. Anderson, his parents Clifford and Marie, his father and mother-in-law Leonard and Freda Swanson, brothers-in-law Duane Swanson and Donald Jaqua and sister-in-law Carolyn Jaqua.


George William Medlin

NORA SPRINGS -- George William Medlin, 65, of Nora Springs, died from heart and kidney failure on Monday, September 23, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W., Rockford, IA, (via the Nora Springs exit) with Pastor Judy Wooton officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2013, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. The family requests casual attire.

George was born August 6, 1948, in Mason City, the son of George Lyle and Della (Nowlan) Medlin. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1968.

George was united in marriage to Ann Kofoot on December 19, 1970, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. In 1969, he became employed with Northwestern States Portland Cement Company/ Holcim Cement Plant, where he worked for 42 years (1969 - 2001 active employment and 2001-2011 non-active/disabled employment).

George enjoyed spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, backyard fires and making people laugh. George always touched somebody's heart wherever he went.

George is survived by his wife of 42 years: Ann Medlin of Nora Springs; son: Brent Medlin and wife Amy of Rockford; daughter: Brenda Weed and husband Mike of Wixom, Michigan; three grandchildren: Wyatt Medlin, Garrett Medlin and Kodi Weed; four brothers: Ed Allen and wife Marciel of Humboldt, Iowa, Jerry Allen and wife Janice of Mason City, Robert Medlin and wife Doris of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Jim Medlin and wife Barb of Mason City; and many special nieces and nephews. He is also survived by extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Donna Wentworth and husband Wayne; special niece: Sherri Ezarski; and his mother and father-in-law: Myrle and Cora Kofoot.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Ann M. Anderson, 83, died Sept. 19, 2013, at the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nev., after suffering a brief illness.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Neil Manternach officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Dennis Wayne Hesley
U.S. Marine Corps   Vietnam War

MASON CITY -- Dennis Wayne Hesley, 64, of Mason City died in Clay Center, Kansas on Sept. 5, 2013 of an extended illness. He lived in Clay Center for over 33 years.

He had many good friends, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and living life. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1967. Afterword, Dennis served over three years in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps, and the US Army. He served his nation gallantly and earned a Bronze Star with a "V" Device for bravery during the siege of the city of Hue, South Vietnam.

He left the US Army in 1980 and moved to Clay Center where he worked until his health began to fail. Dennis was a gentle heart, who did his best with family and friends. He will be missed and always remembered for his zest for life.

Dennis was preceded by his mother, Theo Hesley, his stepmother, Phylis Hesley, and two sisters: Denese Potter, and Marcene Flores. Dennis is survived by his father, Gerald Hesley; his sisters, LaNaya Angell, Michelle Couch, Shirlee McAndrews, Teresa Harms, and Nancy Rodriguez. He is also survived by his brothers, William King, Michael Hesley, Kelley Hesley, Thomas King, and Joseph King, and his two sons, Marc Hesley, and Jan Hesley.

Dennis's service will be held at Memorial Park, west of Mason City on Sept. 28, 2013, at 1 p.m. It is open for friends and family to attend. Following the service, there will be a late luncheon at Gerald's home at 1203 Second St. S.E., Mason City, IA at 3 p.m. on the 28th.


Charles J. Lenze

NORWALK -- Charles J. Lenze, 66, passed way at home on September 23, 2013, following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cumming, IA.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 2,7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial will be private in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Chuck was born on December 18, 1946, in Mason City, IA to Alice (Tallman) and Leonard Lenze. He graduated from Drake University Pharmacy School and worked for Mercy Hospital as a student and for the balance of his career.

Chuck was a great outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing, camping, bicycling, snow skiing, and dog training. He was also an avid wine maker. Chuck was a volunteer at Living History Farms, and a member of Ducks Unlimited, an Eagle Scout, and served on the Warren County Conservation Board.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elaine Lenze; sons, Troy (Gregoria Lyssikatos) Lenze, and Eric Lenze; brother, Herm (Kyla) Lenze; nieces, Tracy (George) Ahn, Monica Friesen, and Sara (Caleb) Brown; nephew, Adam Lenze; brother-in-law, Richard Pepoon; and sister-in-law, Cynthia (Don) Adams; 3 great-nephews and a great-niece. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.

Paul was born on April 1, 1963, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Ervin and Aileen (Modderma) Bartelt. In 1981, he graduated from Mason City High School. He played high school football and also won 2 gold medals for Racquetball in the 2005-2006 Iowa Games. Paul worked for Mason City Parks & Recreation and Winnebago Industries before he began his employment with Curries – where he worked from November 10, 1985, to December 4, 2012.

On September 27, 2003, he married Becky Wright in Clear Lake, Iowa. Paul enjoyed spending time with his family – especially his daughter, Olivia. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing softball, horseshoes, riding his bicycle, cheering on the Vikings and Twins, watching racing – Tony Stewart -- and spending time with his friends. He will be deeply missed.

Paul is survived by his wife: Becky Bartelt of Mason City; daughter: Olivia Bartelt of Mason City; mother: Aileen Bartelt of Mason City; mother and father-in-law: James and Alice Wright of Dewar, Iowa; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Randy Wright (Pam) of Dunkerton, Iowa, Rick Wright (Milissa) of Janesville, Iowa, John Wright of Waterloo, Iowa, Cindy Wright of Foley, Alabama, Joe Wright (Michelle) of Raymond, Iowa, Wendy Steffen (Bob) of Dewar, Greg Wright (Kaylene) of La Porte City, Iowa, and Jennifer Wright (Jarrod) of Mason City. DeDee Anderson

KANAWHA-- DeDee Anderson, 90, longtime resident of Kanawha, passed away September 26, 2013, at the Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna, Minnesota.

Andrée Henriette Georgette Baruzier, the daughter of André Emile Jules Baruzier and Gabrielle Ringuenoir Baruzier, was born on June 17, 1923, in Saint Prest, France.

She was united in marriage with Lester M. Anderson on December 1, 1945, in Paris, France. They moved to Kanawha, Iowa, in 1948. DeDee worked at Carter’s Furniture Store for four years and then she and Lester purchased Anderson Department Store and ran it from 1965 until 1986.

DeDee is survived by one son, Christian Anderson and his wife Sandra of Owatonna, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Michelle Cousins and her husband, Gregory of Waseca, Minnesota, Anthony Anderson of Wallkill, New York, and Angela Brown and her husband, Ryan of Owatonna, Minnesota; and four great-grandchildren, Ethan and Mason Cousins and Dylan and Tyler Brown. She also has many nieces and nephews from France.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother and one sister.

A private family burial is planned at a later date.

Ann M. Anderson

LAS VEGAS, Nevada--Ann M. Anderson, 83, died on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada, after suffering a brief illness.

A funeral mass will be held at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, Iowa, 10 a.m. October 1, 2013, with Rev. Neil Manternach officiating. Visitation will be one hour preceding the service at the church. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Ann was born June 21, 1930, in New York City, N.Y., to Michael and Maria (Panza) Coscia, immigrants from the Puglia region of Italy. Her father was a longshoreman and her mother was a seamstress and homemaker.

Ann lived in New York until 1979, having graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan, N.Y.C., in 1948.

She and her husband, William C. (Bill) Anderson, erstwhile of Clear Lake, Iowa, moved from New York to Arlington, Texas, in 1979 where she continued her responsibilities in the pension department of American Airlines.

Early in 1991, the couple moved to the Sun City Community in the environs of Las Vegas, Nevada, where she resided until her death.

She was an active member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. Her interests included family, dining with friends and traveling. She had visited such far-away places as Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and Russia, as well as many trips to visit family, during her lifetime.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her sister, Antoinette Coscia; son, Chris Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, William C. Anderson; sisters, Jean Cavanagh and Grace Jackson; and a niece, Kathy (Jackson) Bates.

Violet Repp

OSAGE -- Violet Repp, age 92, of Osage, died Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Bryan Lagerstam officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Denver, Iowa, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Vi was born March 6, 1921, in Denver, Iowa, the daughter of John “Jack” and Elsie (Sass) Biemann. She graduated from Denver High School in 1938, and received her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls. Vi taught in Readlyn and also played organ at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver during this time.

On July 10, 1943, she married Dr. John Milton Repp in El Paso, Texas. To this union, three children were born: John Jr., Samuel and Sara. They lived in El Paso and after John’s discharge they moved to Iowa City and then to Osage in 1953.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was an active member of her circle. Vi also was a scout leader. She enjoyed playing piano and organ and in previous years taught piano and organ lessons. Vi also enjoyed crossword puzzles, traveling, playing bridge, and had a great love of cats.

Vi is survived by her children, John Jr. (Nancy) Repp of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Sara Repp of Orchard; daughter-in-law, Melita Repp of Tucson, Arizona; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. John Repp in 2008; and her son, Sam in 2007.
