BRITT — Elaine Perkins, 77, of Britt, died Sunday, Sept.15, 2013, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the First Lutheran Church, 70 Fifth Ave. N.W., Britt, with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating.

Burial will be at a later date.

Mason City — Bette J. Hugo, 63, of Nora Springs died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Lake Mills — Jim Thune, 46, of Lake Mills died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Inurnment will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Elaine Perkins

BRITT — Elaine Perkins, 77, of Britt, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church, 70 Fifth Ave. N.W. in Britt, with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W., in Britt, and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Elaine was born in Readlyn, Iowa, on July 11, 1936, to Paul and Norma (Hagenow) Hartman. Her family moved to a farm north of Tripoli, Iowa, where she graduated from Tripoli High School in 1954.

Elaine married Robert Sievers in 1956 and they ran the Wayside Restaurant in Tripoli for 10 years. She also sold Avon. Robert passed away in 1974 and Elaine married Gene Perkins in 1976. They moved to Britt in 1983 where Elaine was a teacher’s aide until her retirement.

Elaine was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Britt where she served in various groups and committees. She was also a member of the Britt Women’s Club and other card clubs. She especially enjoyed the 31 card club.

Elaine was very active in fitness, walking daily and participating in an exercise group. Elaine enjoyed trips to the Wisconsin Dells, Branson and Las Vegas. Gene always commented that he took her to all the finest high school football fields and gymnasiums around North Iowa.

Elaine loved cooking and baking, shopping, cross-stitching and quilting, crossword puzzles, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and Minnesota Twins games, and volunteering at the Britt Public Library and Britt Food Bank. Most of all, she loved visits from her children and grandchildren.

Elaine is survived by her husband Gene Perkins of Britt; children Amy Sievers and her children Alisha and Caden Gates of Stillwater, Minn., Tony Sievers of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Steve (Samantha) Perkins and their children Chase and Jack Perkins of Madrid, Iowa; sisters Glenyce (Forrest) Bolte of Vinton, Iowa, Verlaine Knoploh of Sumner, Iowa, and Wilma Fransen of Waverly, Iowa; sisters-in-law Darlene (Al) Dana of Waverly and Fran (Kenny) Sievers of Des Moines, brothers-in-law Larry (Carol) Sievers of Waverly, John Perkins of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, and Russell (Lanee) Perkins of Spirit Lake, Iowa; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Robert Sievers, and a brother Victor in infancy.

ROWAN — Evan Arthur McCallum, 88, a Chicago, Illinois, native, formerly of Wheaton, Illinois, and Rowan, Iowa, died, Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at a private care facility in Williams, Iowa.

 Lynn A. Mennenga

PONTIAC, ILLINOIS — Lynn A. Mennenga, 73, of El Mirage, Arizona, formerly of Pontiac, Illinois, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at 3:15 p.m. at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Illinois

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 18, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, Pontiac with the Rev. James O. Wolfe III officiating. Burial will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

A visitation will be held today, Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home, Pontiac. Memorials in Lynn’s name may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice and all correspondence may be sent in care of Ross Menennga 1811 Cardinal Court, Pontiac, IL 61764.

Lynn was born on the family farm on Sept. 12, 1940, in Belmond, Iowa, a son of Harry and Esther (Frohling) Mennenga. He married Sue C. DeBolt on Sept. 30, 1967, in Pontiac. Illinois She survives in El Mirage, Arizona Also surviving are five sons: Scott A. Mennenga of Morris, Illinois; Todd A. Mennenga of Chicago, Illinois; Bradd A. (Stephanie) Mennenga of Morton, Illinois; Ross A. Mennenga and Chadd A. (Megan) Mennenga both of Pontiac, Illinois; eleven grandchildren: Brittany, Alexis, Madison, Sophie, Grace, Andrew, Alex, Michael, Rachael, Nolan and Graham. Also surviving are one sister-in-law, Margaret Mennenga and two nephews, Duan and Daren Mennenga. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Larry Mennenga.

Lynn was educated in a country school and a graduate of Belmond High School. He moved to California for one year. He farmed in Iowa until 1963 when he entered the U.S. Army and served his country stationed in Hawaii. In 1965, Lynn was discharged and returned to the family farm and continued to farm until his retirement in 1988 when they moved to Pontiac, Illinois. Lynn was a consultant for Trevcam Inc. and was involved in real estate investments and property management.

He was a former member of the Pontiac Elks Lodge. He loved horses and farming, and also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Daniel Linn Berg

MARSHALLTOWN — Daniel Linn Berg, 33, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Ave. W., Marshalltown, with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating.

Larry Joe Martin

 MOUNTAIN HOME, Arkansas — Funeral services for Larry Joe Martin of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be private.

Larry passed away September 14, 2013, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 61. He was born November 20, 1951, in Hayti, Missouri, the son of Joe and Velma Cooper Martin.

Larry lived in Mountain Home since moving from Mitchell, Iowa, in 2006. He was a very avid fisherman, and enjoyed gardening, tinkering with cars, and being outdoors.

Larry is survived by his son, Scott Martin of West Plains, Mo., daughter, Ashley (Kyle) Trytten of Mitchell, Iowa, four grandchildren, Nathan, Caleb, Memphis, and Aayden Martin, two sisters, Louise (Lee) Watson of Mountain Home, Ark., and Opal (Charles) Wensel of Gassville, Arkansas, and two brothers, Lonnie (Tammy) Martin of Gassville, Ark., and Lester Martin of Mountain Home, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by parents and brother, Lawrence Martin.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Ozarks or to the family.

A reception celebrating Bob’s life will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 510 Thompson St., Sheffield.

Allen Dwight Kindschuh

MASON CITY — Allen Dwight Kindschuh, age 58, of Mason City, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at his home of natural causes.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Following the memorial service, inurnment will be at the Liberty Cemetery in Little Cedar, Iowa. There will be a time for light lunch and fellowship at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in Little Cedar following services at the cemetery.

Allen was born May 21, 1955, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Paul and Verla (Julius) Kindschuh. He graduated from Osage High School. Allen was employed at Specialty Engineering in Nora Springs. He was a member of Abate of Iowa. Allen enjoyed going to NASCAR races, was a Minnesota Vikings fan, and loved riding his motorcycle. He enjoyed family gatherings, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Allen is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Roney of Plymouth, Jill Kindschuh (Sam Gooder) of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren, Katlynn Roney, Kamryn Roney and Marlee Gooder; a brother, Dennis (Becky) Kindschuh of Nora Springs; a niece, Tracy (Robert) Teeter of Mason City; and a nephew, Anthony (Sunny) Kindschuh of Bondurant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kim Kindschuh; his sister, Charlene Hutzell; and a niece, Vicki Hutzell.

Astred L. Schwab

Astred Linnea Schwab was born in Wesley, Kossuth County, Iowa, on April 15, 1922, the daughter of Palmer and Ida (Oscarson) Pearson. Her parents immigrated in 1914 (Palmer) and 1921 (Ida) from Sweden, settling near Wesley and raising three children.

Astred was born on a farm near Wesley along with two brothers, Arnold and Eldon. Palmer and Ida purchased a farm in Hancock County, southeast of Britt, and lived there until retirement. The children attended schools in Britt. Astred graduated from Britt High School in l940. She took teacher’s training there and taught in the county school north of Britt until her marriage to Harold in 1941.

The couple moved on the Schwab family farm near Corwith, where they lived until 1978 when they moved to Britt. Astred enjoyed farming, taking care of the chickens, garden, and various household chores. She raised five children on the farm. Cooking three meals a day, plus morning and afternoon lunches during field work, took up much of her time. Also baked goods were taken to many events especially for church and family get-togethers. Astred’s cold water chocolate cake with white frosting drizzled with chocolate sauce and swirled, was a favorite everywhere.

Harold and Astred traveled throughout their marriage as long as they were able. They traveled throughout the USA, in Europe, Canada, Russia, Israel and Latin America as well. Astred volunteered for church activities, the American Cancer Society, and PTA, Gideons and various other organizations.

The Church of the Nazarene in Britt was an important part of her and Harold’s lives. Astred held various positions in the church as well as teaching Sunday school for years.

Astred is survived by her five children, Marlys Talidis of Rockford, Illinois, and her son, Jim Talidis, Duane Schwab of rural Corwith, Dennis (Connie) Schwab of rural Corwith and their two children, Brandon (Sara) Schwab of rural Britt and their two children, Carter and Colin, and Lindsay (Nolan) Thilges of Clive, Joy Schwab of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Darlene Schwab, of Madison, Wisconsin; her two brothers, Arnold (Mary) Pearson of Mason City and Eldon (Gwen)Pearson of Garner; also cousins, Bertil (Ulla) Thernstrom and Gunner (Anna May) Thernstrom of Karlshamn, Sweden; and several nieces.

Astred was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer Pearson (1890-1983), Ida (Oscarson) Pearson (1899-1976); her husband of 71 years, Harold (1917 — Nov. 22, 2012); a granddaughter, Stephanie Talidis; and nephew, William Pearson.

Joshua G. Gapp

KEARNEY, Nebraska — Joshua G. Gapp, 30, of Kearney, Neb., died Sunday, September 15, 2013, as a result of a car accident near Kearney.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Cornerstone Berean Church with the Reverend Kelly Larson officiating.

Interment will be held at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon.

At the family’s request cremation has taken place.

Family will receive friends from 5-7 today, Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home, 4115 Ave N, Kearney.

Josh was born February 24, 1983, in Forest City, Iowa, to Larry and Pam (Monsen) Gapp.

Josh grew up in Forest City, Iowa, where he received his education. He was baptized as a teen at the First Baptist Church of Forest City. He graduated from the Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree.

Josh married Amber Holl on May 24, 2008, in Kearney. He worked in Lincoln at Fiserv, then in November of 2012 they moved to Kearney where he worked at Xpanxion as a computer software quality assurance analyst.

Josh loved to go camping, boating, wakeboarding, snow skiing and biking. He enjoyed the outdoors and being with his family. He was so happy and proud to be a father.

Survivors include his wife; son Owen at home; his parents of Forest City, Iowa; brothers, Justin (Tiffany) Gapp, Titonka, Iowa, and Jacob and friend Janelle Moniot of Forest City, Iowa; grandmother, Elaine Gapp of Forest City, Iowa; Mother and Father In-laws, Randy and Jolene Holl of Kenesaw; brother-in-law, Justin (Deedra) Holl of White House, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Erin (Shawn) Herter of Kenesaw; nephews, Chase and Blake of Kenesaw, Nebraska; nieces, Abigail Gapp of Titonka, Iowa, and Kinley and Kenadie of White House, Tenn.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Margaret E. Bartusek

Mason City — Margaret E. Bartusek, 88, of Mason City passed away (Monday) September 16, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Dan Gerrietts officiating.

A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel. Graveside Services will be held following the service at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Margaret was born in Northern Ireland on February 17, 1925, to James and Bessie McDonald. In 1946, she and her daughter came to the United States by ship, often called bride ships. After arriving in New York, they made their way to Mason City.

Margaret was united in marriage to Louis Bartusek in 1950. She was a loving mother and devoted her time to be a stay-at-home mom. Margaret was a very determined individual. No matter what life threw at her, she accepted it, and moved on. Her top priority in life was to take care of her family. If they needed anything, she was always there.

Margaret enjoyed working on latch hook, crocheting, gardening and taking family vacations. One of her proudest accomplishments was to be awarded her United States citizenship on April 14, 1971. While at Good Shepherd, she enjoyed making new friends, “Jan’s” BINGO, singing in the choir and attending social hour.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Nancy (Paul) Bailey, Mason City; Robert (Larece) Bartusek, Mason City; Ron (Diane) Bartusek, Mason City; Donna Henaman, Mason City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many other nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband Louis Bartusek; two sons, Louis “Jim” and Tony Bartusek; and many other loved and cherished family members.

Carolyn S. Pringle

MASON CITY — Carolyn S. Pringle, 74, of Mason City, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Carolyn was born on March 11, 1939, in Mason City, the daughter of Nicholas A. and Kathryn (Riehm) DeWilde. She received her education in the Mason City public school system. She excelled in instrumental music achieving Iowa All-State band and orchestra recognition where she was selected as first chair in the band her senior year. She continued her education at Mason City Junior College and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She spent a few years as a secretary for Prudential Insurance Company and followed with a career as a legal secretary for Morris Laird and James Heiny at the Laird Law Firm for 33 years.

She met her husband while both were performing in the Mason City Municipal Band. Jerry and Carolyn were married Dec. 30, 1961. They enjoyed summer activities at Clear Lake and especially an annual fishing trip to Northwestern Ontario, Canada, for 54 consecutive years.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Jerry Pringle of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Joe Pringle of DeSoto, Wis., and Jack Pringle and wife Joan of Clinton, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Sandy DeWilde of Clear Lake; her nieces and nephews, David Pringle, Dan Pringle, Darcy Buege and husband Derek, Dr. Jason DeWilde, Tammy Kroc and husband Dan, Jason Pringle and wife Julie and Josh Pringle. She is also survived by numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Erna Helen (Schmidt) Sleper

TITONKA — Erna Helen (Schmidt) Sleper, 88, of Titonka, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, in Titonka.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Ramsey Reformed Church, Titonka, with the Rev. Dr. Perry DeGroot officiating. Burial will be in the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery, Titonka.

Erna Helen (Schmidt) Sleper was born Feb. 2, 1925, near Woden, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Boyken) Schmidt. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She graduated from Woden High School and AIB College of Business in Des Moines, after which she worked at the Titonka Savings Bank and the International Harvester dealership in Titonka.

Erna was united in marriage to John R. “Joe” Sleper on Dec. 18, 1946, and they made their home on the family farm in rural Titonka. Erna’s faith in God was a very important part of her life and she was an active member of Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka. She was also a member of the American Legion.

Erna was a gifted tailor and seamstress and often sewed for others. She and her late husband, Joe, enjoyed gardening and traveling together. Afternoon tea was part of her daily routine, and Erna could often be found sharing tea and cookies with family or friends. Spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren brought her much joy.

Erna is survived by her children, Joleen (Steven) Heyer of Titonka, John (Maureen) Sleper of Titonka, and Bruce (Nancy) Sleper of Cheyenne, Wyo.; grandchildren, Jeremy (Jody) Heyer, Melissa Heyer, Jessica (Scott) Erickson, Jennifer (Jacob) Etheredge, and Christopher Heyer; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Justin and Hayden Heyer, John Etheredge, and Christian Erickson; sisters-in-law Clara Mayland and Marilyn Schmidt; aunt Mildred Schmidt of Titonka; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (May 23, 1991); infant daughter (October 5, 1948); her parents; twin brother, Ernest Schmidt; two sisters: Marie Schmidt and Lena Mae Hickey; and three half-brothers: Richard, William and Henry Mayland.

Barbara Jean (Barb) Wendt

MANLY — Barbara Jean (Barb) Wendt, 87, Manly, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mason City.

A mass of Christian burial for Barbara will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly with Reverend John Gossman officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday with a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly.

The family would like to suggest that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to direct them to the family, and will be given to various charities that Barbara loved.

Barbara Jean Wendt was born on June 7, 1926, in West Bend, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Paul and Justine (Kisch) Deninger. Barb attended the Manly Public Schools, graduating from Manly High School.

She was united in marriage to Ward Wendt on July 3, 1948, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, and to this marriage a son Steven was born. Ward preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2002.

Barb worked as a secretary for the Soybean Processors of America in Manly, and as the office manager for Fullerton Lumber Co. in Manly and as the office manager for the Kensett Homes in Kensett where she retired from.

Barb was an avid golfer and Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed flowers, and loved spending winters with her husband Ward in Mesa, Ariz.

She was a very faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, Our Lady of Victory Guild, charter member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club and the ladies organization at the golf course in Manly, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Steve (Amy) Wendt of Mason City; her sister, Joanne Froeschle of Clinton; a brother, Jim (Isolde) Deninger of Marshalltown, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.

Besides her husband Ward, Barb was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Deninger who died in infancy, and Jerry Deninger.

 Richard Dean Stephen

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Richard Dean Stephen, 67, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Mason City, passed away Sept. 7, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Richard was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 20, 1946, to Raymond and June (Cartwright). He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a torpedoman third class on the U.S.S. Pickerel. In the 18 years he spent living in Mason City he was employed by American Realty, Yohn Ready Mix, and as a school bus driver for the Mason City School District. Richard enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars, and had a special affinity for Mustangs. He was often seen driving his car or school bus as Santa Claus during the holiday season.

Richard is survived by his son, Ryan of Mason City; brother Rodney of Las Vegas; sister Ladonna of Las Vegas and sister Marlene of Virginia; eight nieces and nephews and two grand nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and June (Cartwright).

Allene Agnes Halvorson

ST. ANSGAR — Allene Agnes Halvorson, age 93, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar and one hour before the funeral service on Saturday. Burial will be at First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Allene was born July 27, 1920, in Newburg Township, St. Ansgar, to Robert C. Rosenberg and Caroline (Lena) A. Dieterichs. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural St. Ansgar. She completed school through grade 8, and then worked for neighboring farm families. Allene was a wonderful cook, gardener and enjoyed weaving rugs. She was a volunteer for the Mitchell County Cancer drive and an active member of First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.

Alton Halvorson and Allene Rosenberg were united in marriage March 23, 1946, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural St. Ansgar.

Allene is survived by sons Wayne (Kathy) Halvorson of Chatfield, Minn., and Curt (Annette) Halvorson of St. Ansgar along with seven grandchildren, Kimberly (Andy) deLeon, Lakeville, Minn., Brian (Emily) Halvorson, Eyota, Minn., Ben (Jennifer) Halvorson, Chatfield, Minn., Julie (Mike) Sogla, Northfield, Minn., and Nick (Anna) Halvorson, Thomas (Leah) Halvorson and Valerie (Cory) Johnson all of St. Ansgar, and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Betty Halvorson, of Casa Grande, Ariz.
