Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 29, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Kevin Olson of Bethel Lutheran Church in Joyce officiating.

Burial will be in Ellington Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

In honor of Wayne’s love of old cars, a special parking area will be designated for those who want to attend and honor Wayne with their special cars or trucks near the front of the church the day of the funeral.

Wayne “Skunk” Lowell Torkelson was born in Forest City on April 11, 1949, to Othelia and Clarence Torkelson.

Wayne spent his early years attending Fertile Elementary School and tagging along with his five older brothers. His love of old cars began while riding alongside those same brothers racing up and down the Fertile farm’s mile-long lane and other gravel roads around Fertile. He formed great friendships growing up on the farm near Fertile that he maintained the rest of his life.

After high school, he started his on-the-job training for his future as the proud owner of Torkelson Plumbing and Heating.

Wayne “Skunk” was a decorated soldier in the army, serving with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam.

Wayne had many names, “Skunk” being the one he was most famous for. One of his favorites was Uncle Skunk, however, his two most favorite were Grandpa Skunk and Dad. His children and grandchildren paid him the highest honor by saying, “Our dad would do anything for us!” His children and grandchildren have many wonderful memories of times spent with their dad.

Forest City watched Wayne’s business grow from infancy to him partnering with his son and another employee. Skunk was especially proud of his certification as a master plumber and electrician.

Wayne was a true “Car Man”! He lovingly restored a 1966 yellow Chevelle that was “almost an exact replica” of the car he drove in high school. His latest project was owning a 1930 Ford Model A Fordor. He loved to talk about cars. Skunk was a man of few words, but when he spoke you listened.

Wayne married Cindy Feller and together they had three children: Janelle Torkelson (Travis Harms), Brett Torkelson and Adam Torkelson. His three grandchildren are Brittany Youngers, Andrew Youngers and Emma Lynn Harms.

Survivors include his children, grandchildren and their mother and grandmother, Cindy. In addition he is survived by sisters and brothers, Margie Sogard, Bernice Voelker, Ronald (Lucille) Torkelson, Leslie (Paulette) Torkelson, Roger (Shirley Norman) Torkelson, Marsha (Mark) Brunsvold; sister-in-law, Janice Torkelson; aunts Thelma Sunde, Julaine Albertson, Bonnie Torkelson, Linda Kesler; uncles, Orrin Torkelson, Marvin Hanna; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margie Helen; brothers, Clarence Jr. and Carroll; nephew, Hollis; and nieces, Debra, LaRae and Lisa.

Wayne was a true hero as he bravely faced his diagnose of Stage 3 cancer and he will be missed by his family and friends.

Harriet L. Lundt

Rockwell — Harriet L. Lundt, 92, formerly of Rockwell, Iowa, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. 3rd St. Rockwell. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. Brad Thornton of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Harriet Lundt Memorial Fund. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Fullertonfh.com.

Harriet Lucille was born on August 26, 1920, at Galt, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Carrie Smith, who were both from Illinois. She was one of seven children born to Edward and Carrie. She matriculated and graduated from Rockwell High School. Harriet was also a longtime member of the congregation of First Congregational Church in Rockwell.

Following high school she remained with her family to assist her parents during the Great Depression. During this time she met Cato Lundt Jr. of neighboring Swaledale, Iowa. Their relationship blossomed and on November 17, 1940, she and Cato were united in marriage. After a short honeymoon, they began a life together working the Lundt family farm in southern Cerro Gordo county.

Their family grew rapidly with birth of their first child (Rick) in 1941, eventually followed by five more children. Through their hard work and devoted partnership, the couple and their expanding family later moved to a farm of their own in nearby Floyd County.

As farm operations continued expanding along with their family, they moved to larger farms in nearby Dougherty and, eventually, Rockwell. Through all the travails and difficult work of a rural farming operation, Harriet was a lifelong partner to Cato — a committed farm wife and devoted mother to her six children.

Outside the home, Harriet remained very involved in her home church, Rockwell’s First Congregational Church, often serving with the ladies of the church and as their secretary. She also became a church deacon as well as serving on the church counsel. As her six children joined the family and grew, she devoted her boundless passion and commitment to their needs.

In serving the local farm community’s youth, she also became a 4-H leader. Harriet was notable for her industrious spirit. One seldom saw her without an embroidery project, a sewing pattern or a ball of wool nearby. In particular she was a talented seamstress, and notably made numerous quilts. She was also a voracious reader, keeping favorite books close at hand even at the age of 90. Harriet was also a wonderful cook for her family.

As their family matured and eventually left the nest, she and Cato came to spend more and more of their vacations in Hawaii, where they enjoyed time together during the cold winter months back in Iowa. Never one for “idle hands,” even in Hawaii Harriet often kept busy with craftwork, frequently making and selling items in the local markets and donating the proceeds to local charities.

Harriet and Cato made sure that each of the children had the opportunity to attend college, something to which she’d aspired but an aspiration she had been unable to fulfill in the depths of the Great Depression. She was proud that, due to her efforts, college has been an option for her children and grandchildren. Harriet believed very much in leaving the world a better place than she’d found it; higher education was one of her passions in this regard.

Above all, Harriet leaves of legacy of life well-lived. She overcame tremendous adversity and economic disadvantage to raise a family and grow a business in farming. Her mind was always active, her hands fully-engaged and her devotion ever visible. She will be in the hearts and minds of her family forever.

Those left to honor her memory are her children Leanne and her husband, Guy Sommers, Hills, Iowa; Kent and his wife Connie Lundt, Coal Valley, Illinois; Rick and his wife Jean Lundt, Independence, Kansas; Dr. Rita and her husband Michael Boehlje, Austin, Texas; and Holmes and his wife Dr. Leslie Lundt, Wailea, Hawaii; and a daughter-in-law Pam Lundt, Alcester, South Dakota Harriet is also survived by her 18 grandchildren, Eric, Jason, Ryan, Jay Thomas, Jon, Kellie, Matt, Dan, Richard, David, Christina, Jennifer, Pierce, Blaine Lundt, Wendy and Jeff Frevert, and Elizabeth and Ben Sommers, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cato, on February 6, 2008; one son, Leland “Jay”; two great-grandchildren, Grace Lundt and Lila Lundt; as well as her parents, four sisters, Alice Powell, Lola Davis, Wilma Sletton and Virginia Leer; and two brothers, Wallace and Norman Smith.

Maynard D. Holmgaard
U.S. Navy   WWII

Belmond — Maynard D. Holmgaard, age 90, of Belmond, Iowa, died, Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Father Nils Hernandez will be officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Belmond Military Unit will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E., Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the funeral at church Friday. Memorial suggestions include the Belmond Fire Department.

Maynard Dennis Holmgaard, the son of Walter A. Hansen Holmgaard and Botilda (Christensen) Holmgaard, was born November 28, 1922, at rural Coulter, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Thornton High School in Thornton, Iowa, with the Class of 1941. During his school years he was active in various extracurricular activities including baseball and basketball. After high school Maynard was employed as a farmhand in the Thornton area.

In 1942, Maynard enlisted in the United States Navy. He attended boot camp, training as a machinist mate at the Great Lakes Naval Station, Great Lakes, Illinois He then transferred to the Algiers Repair Base at New Orleans in 1943. In 1944, Maynard was transferred to duty on the USS Topeka CL 67 which was a part of Admiral Halsey’s 3rd Fleet and was a part of the landing of the Occupational Forces in Japan. He eventually returned to Portland, Oregon, for Navy Celebration Day.

Following his attachment with the USS Topeka, Maynard was then transferred back to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center to teach where his military training commenced. In April of 1946, Maynard was Honorably Discharged as a Machinist.

He was united in marriage to Helen Lobdell McGrath in 1946 and the couple’s union was blessed with a daughter, Laural “Laurie” Lee. Helen passed away from cancer in 1969.

Maynard later married Shirley Jean Decker Davis, who enjoyed living in Belmond and was active in community affairs. She passed away in 1998 from cancer.

After his years working in various jobs Maynard began employment with the United States Postal Service in 1949. His postal career continued until his retirement in 1981 as a letter carrier. Throughout his 32 years with the post office, Maynard made countless friends and looked out for the well- being of the residents along his routes along the way, often times lending a hand along the journeys of his deliveries.

While traveling along his route in October of 1966, Maynard was seriously hurt, and suffered lifelong injuries as a result of being caught up in the Belmond tornado of 1966. He was unable to work for 444 days as he recovered from the trauma from the mishap.

In addition to his career with postal service, Maynard spent 15 years as assistant greenskeeper at Clarmond Country Club along with doing various other jobs.

Besides spending most of his life in Belmond, his life journey had also included periods of time living in rural Ellendale, Minnesota, and rural Hampton, Iowa.

Maynard worked hard in his career and carried this characteristic through in his hobbies, pastimes and the volunteer service and tasks he did for his community, friends and neighbors. He took great pride in raising a beautiful weed-free garden and lawn, and diligently went about accomplishing many day-to-day tasks despite some mobility issues he incurred from the tornado’s effects on him.

Maynard was more than willing to help his neighbors with various tasks and took great pride in helping to maintain the sidewalks of many storefronts in downtown Belmond, shoveling snow and sweeping the outside entry areas. He also gave countless hours of his time to the Belmond Volunteer Fire Department over a 55-year span as a member of the department.

In addition to helping fight fires earlier on, he was the dispatch director, calling the department into action for many decades.

Maynard had also been a member of the Clarmond Country Club and truly loved to golf in the past. He had enjoyed time in the outdoors taking his family on fishing outings to area lakes and the occasional “night fishing” outing.

In his younger years he looked forward to hunting excursions and the rush of a flushing pheasant, the incoming flight of waterfowl and the exciting pursuit of the whitetail deer.

Maynard enjoyed giving of his talents to his family as he handcrafted many pieces of furniture and other keepsakes for his family. He very much appreciated the simple and relaxing times of leisure as well, be it listening to Rush on the radio which was always on at his home, watching basketball on TV, gathering walnuts or baking angel food cakes for his family and friends.

In recent times Maynard had looked forward to dining out and the comraderie of his buddies Norbert and Leroy at Cattleman’s in Belmond and, of course, his Sunday dinners at the restaurant after his trek to St. Francis for Mass. He also enjoyed coffee and conversation with friends at True Value and sharing in the “News of the Day!”

Maynard was a longtime member of the Belmond VFW and American Legion and had been a member of the Masons for over 50 years.

Those who had the privilege of crossing in his life journey will miss Maynard’s friendly and welcoming, “Hello, how are you doing today?!, concern for the well-being of his fellow man, gentle demeanor, willingness to lend a hand and seeing him about town doing “good turns.”

All who knew him will miss seeing that easily recognizable, cherry-red sedan tooling about the town in a “methodical pace” as he went about the duties of the day.

His memory will live on in the lives of his daughter, Laural “Laurie” (Gary) Martin, Clarion, Iowa, and her daughter, Danielle (Paul) Hansch and their family, Kelsey, Quinn, and Lauren; and son, Bradd Martin and companion Angel Hirsch and their daughter, Lillian, Boone, Iowa; Maynard’s step-children, sons David (Laurie) Nelson, Belleville, Illinois, and Michael (Micki) Nelson, Parthenon, Ark.; daughter, Kathy (Bob) Wessels, Belmond; son, Bill (Jean) Nelson, Spencer, Iowa; and daughters, Patricia Harm and Pamela Kunko, Puyaliup, Wash.; his two sisters, Doris Holmgaard, Thornton, Iowa, and Myrna (Bob) Tracy, Van Nuys, California; and also numerous step-grandchildren and great- grandchildren and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Helen in 1969, and Shirley in 1998, his sister, Virginia in 1992, brother, Dale in 1999, and step-son, Jack McGrath in 1967.

Harold was born on January 13, 1929, on the family farm east of Rockford to Henry and Anna (Adolphs) Marth where he lived his entire life before entering the nursing home in 2011. He graduated from the Rockford High School where he was active in football, basketball and baseball.

Harold served in the Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

On February 14, 1953, Harold married his high school sweetheart, Patricia (Patty) Hubbard, in Rockwell, Iowa. To this union three children were born. He was a hard worker, raising hogs, cattle and chickens while holding a second job at White Farm (Oliver) in Charles City for over 20 years as a drill operator and bullpen inspector to support his family. Accompanying him with farm chores was his St. Bernard dog.

Harold was a patriotic person and loved his country. Harold also loved his family very much. He was a neighborly person, always willing to lend a helping hand. Harold (Dad) was a simple man who told it like it was. You knew the real story when you talked to him. His heart was honest and loving. He loved going to visit people but never overstayed his welcome. He was always there to help anyone in need. There was never a time that you didn’t get the largest bowl of ice cream in the house when you came to visit. If you were called something other than your real name that meant you were real special. He always had a nickname for you, and probably forgot your real one.

He was a great father, always wanting the best for his children, always doing special things like shoveling off the snow from the ice on the creek so his daughter could ice skate. His enjoyment was driving his tractor building paths in the beautiful woods. His passion was building the road and the dam by the creek for all to enjoy.

Harold will be remembered by his family and friends as an appreciative person with a big heart by extending his gratitude with a “love ya love ya love ya” and a “thank ya thank ya thank ya.”
